Nutcracker coming to Goochland By Ken Odor news@goochlandgazette.com

Goochlanders will have a chance to see a full-length production of the holiday favorite “The Nutcracker” this year. For the last two years The Concert Ballet of Virginia (CBV) has performed the “short version” of the holiday favorite, said Associate Director Scott Boyer. “It’s the first time for a full scale show in Goochland,” said Boyer as he watched

a rehearsal before a performance of the Nutcracker Suite, the short program, at Moody Middle School in Henrico last Saturday. Parent volunteer John Madeira said he hopes the four performances at the middle school will draw people all the way from the Charlottesville area in the west to the Richmond area in the east. The ballet performed in Charlottesville for a number of years in the past. Four performances are scheduled for

December 4 through December 6 at the auditorium at Goochland High School. “There’s an untapped audience out here,” said Goochland resident Madeira, who has both a son and a daughter in the cast. Both Boyer and Madeira said they see the CBV as a regional institution. “That’s why we chose the name Concert Ballet of Virginia,” said Boyer. Now the full two hour production is

The 35 Mile Drive Association met last week at historic Tuckahoe Plantation to talk about their goals for the coming year. And to build membership. Treasurer Jenny Liesfeld reported that 12 of the charter members had paid their $50 dues. “We’ve got to get 25 or 30 people involved in this thing,” said Wayne Dementi, the organization’s vice president. Members who join before the end of the year will be designated charter members and pay $50. After the first of the year the membership fee goes up to $65. High on the agenda for next year is to publish the association’s brochure. A logo has already been designed. Designing and rolling out a web site is the second big goal, said president Aynsley Fisher. A third priority for next year is the adoption of a “signature” event by the association, an idea that sparked a great deal of discussion. Fisher also promoted the idea of bringing attention to all the horse related activities available in Goochland County. “We have everything here,” said Fisher. “It’s like a well-kept secret,” said Doris Elderman, Executive Director of the Goochland Chamber of Commerce. “Goochland needs to toot its own horn.”

Three Goochland Elementary School faculty got a new hairstyle last week when Principal Dianna Gordon cut 10 inches of each woman’s hair for donation to Locks of Love, the program that donates hair pieces to children suffering from long term medical hair loss. In an assembly attended by the entire student body, Gordon, under the supervision of Trish Scott of Salon Karma, made quick work of the job. Teachers Jennifer Casteel and Zoe Parrish and school counselor Jessica Zorger had each agreed to part with their long tresses if the students reached their goal of raising $300 on the school’s “Crazy Hat Day,” on November 17. That was the day when students were encouraged to wear their favorite headgear to school along with bringing a one dollar donation for the Leukemia – Lymphoma society. The school raised $330 and donated a check in that amount to Debbie Bridewell, Campaign Coordinator of School and Youth Programs for the Virginia Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. “I’ll miss her long hair but I fully support what she’s doing,” said Casteel’s husband Briggs, who stopped by to watch. “The money will go to find a cure for blood cancer,” Bridewell told the students after the check presentation. “The teachers are brave to part with their hair, but the children with blood cancer are even braver.” After their initial shearing, each of the three faculty members was scheduled for a free styling at Salon Karma.

On Wednesday, November 11, Lt. Benjamin A. Curle of Goochland visited the pre-school classes at Hebron Day School in Manakin-Sabot. As a fall service project, the children “adopted” Lt. Curle’s platoon and collected snack items to send to the soldiers in Iraq. They also made more than 60 Thanksgiving and Christmas cards, enough for each soldier to receive one. Lt. Curle talked to the children about his time in Iraq and answered their questions. He was on leave during his visit to Hebron, but returns to Tallil, Iraq later in November. Lt. Curle is a graduate of Goochland High School and a 2008 graduate of Virginia Military Institute. He is the son of Mack and Paula Curle of Goochland.

The Goochland High School (GHS) auditorium was almost full to capacity November 7 with more than 600 people of all ages ready for an evening of classical music. Conductor Erin R. Freeman led the Richmond Symphony Orchestra in one of the finest kicked back classics performances county residents and their guests have experienced. The audience was treated to selections from classical music giants such as Beethoven, Williams, Rossini, Bartok, Piazzolla, Prokofiev and ending with Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody. Conductor Freeman engaged the audience by relating the selections to the program theme, “Tragedy, Tango and Triumph.” Her sense of humor explaining the pieces and the perfor-

mance of the musicians, contributed to a successful and enjoyable evening, as demonstrated by loud cheers, repeated applause and a standing ovation by the audience as Erin’s baton signaled the conclusion of the program. This third annual Richmond Symphony performance at the GHS was a charity event, organized by the Goochland Rotary Club, a service organization, to benefit the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services (GFCFS). GFCFS volunteers and staff serve the medical, dental, and other needs of uninsured county residents on a daily basis. Prescription drugs, provided to patients remain the biggest expense in the Clinic’s budget, and that is where events like the Richmond Symphony play a major

role in defraying some of these expenses. The benefits are shared by a majority of the less fortunate county residents. This event would have been impossible if it hadn’t been for the generosity and sound support of Goochland County businesses, patrons, and families attending the event. Because of the overwhelming support from the community, the Rotary Club was able to raise more than $30,000 for GFCFS. Plans are underway to have the Richmond Symphony at GHS again, next year, with a holiday theme. Goochland Rotary Club members and leadership thank all who participated in this year’s event and look forward to yet another great Symphony performance in the fall of 2010.

www.goochlandgazette.com

Thanks for what we have A visit to one of our favorite places last weekend helped this writer get a grip on what might be the right perspective for this year’s Thanksgiving, considering the tough times facing the county and the country. After all, with lots of folks out of work and budget cuts looming locally and at the state level that promise more job cuts, there’s plenty to worry about. But a trip to Meadow Farm Museum (see our article in the LEW section), where they were having another of their living history presentations, this time on Thanksgiving in the South in the 1860s, helped put things in perspective. A remark by Living History Interpreter Linda Eikmeier struck me. “A chicken was a big deal,” she said offhandedly as she prepared the bird using a period reflector oven. Times were tough during the years that Meadow Farm portrays. A chicken or a good meal of any kind was a big deal. And times are tough now too, with the county, state and nation facing the now familiar woes of higher unemployment numbers, lower revenues, and budget cuts at every level. Gripped in the worst economic downturn since the 1930s, there’s reason to be less than jovial. But there’s still a lot to be thankful for and maybe tough times are sometimes needed to help us all get our priorities straight. Most of us will still have the opportunity to gather with family and friends and reaffirm ties that are often strained by the ultra fast pace of modern life, sometimes made even faster during economic high times. Most of us still have jobs, although many of us have had to make adjustments. And many have family members and friends who may not be working right now. That’s tough times, for sure. But the latest report says unemployment in the state declined a fraction of a percentage point last month, and the statewide jobless number is about four points lower than the nation as a whole. Thanks for that. What we do have is the chance to live in a place where, unlike many others around the world, we attempt to solve our problems in a peaceful and orderly manner, rather than through rougher methods. Even though there is great dissension in state and national politics about how to solve some of the great questions of the moment, like the issue of health care, few of us can doubt that whatever changes are made will be done lawfully and, should they turn out to be unwise, can be modified later. So as we work our way out of this surely temporary downturn, let’s pull together as families and as a community, confident that better times are in store not too far down the road, while we enjoy the company of those most important to us, our family and friends. A blessing to be thankful for - free elections Among the many blessings for which we all give thanks this week is a democratic government, where the will of the people is expressed at the polls and political power is transferred by ballot rather than force. In Goochland, while members of one party may regret their defeat and members of another may celebrate their victory, all can be proud of the civil manner in which the November election was conducted and the civic commitment of our voters. While the average voter turnout was only 42 percent statewide, Goochland’s turnout was 56 percent - second highest in the Commonwealth. Our voter participation is not only a trib-

ute to our citizens but also to the extraordinary organizational work and professionalism of General Registrar Frances Ragland and Assistant Registrar Phyllis Platt. We are also indebted to the Officers of Election in each community who put in a grueling 16-18 hour day to make sure our political process is fair, open, transparent and legitimate. They are the bedrock upon which the system is based. If you see one of them this week you might want to give them a hug and a personal thank-you for their good work. were started and dropped. We used to read in every issue of the Gazette about Fellowship activities. Now there are none. One question: I sure would like to know why and how the Board of Directors of this once fine organization killed GFFS. Who were the infamous officers and board members who allowed this murder to take place? If I am mistaken here, please someone answer this letter. I noticed the Goochland Clinic who took over responsibility for the fine GFFS Commonwealth Cup Polo fundraiser dropped the event this year because of what they explained was the economy. From what I understand it was more of a matter of lack of pre-planning. They dropped a 15+ year Goochland tradition that

had local, regional, national and international praise. In fact, I think for most years it had the highest attendance of any polo match in the USA. What was their board thinking in making this decision? I think they forgot to apply a strategy that Panera Bread uses and cited recently in the Wall Street Journal about focusing on the 92% employed rather than the 8% not employed. The polo match made a financial impact on Goochland and the Richmond area and should not have been allowed to be dropped. Perhaps a better sponsor should have been selected. The Clinic says they could get it back later. Fat chance. The Northern Virginians had a great start with the polo match and it sure will be a keeper up there. Well here is

another example of a shortsighted decision destroying some of the heritage, tradition, charm, quality and style of Goochland. Shame on you Goochland Clinic. As far as I can see we have had some board leaders and employees of some of the finest public Goochland organizations make wrong and destructive decisions for Goochland. This should not be allowed to continue. It is time for some new leaders that can recreate and/ or restructure the Goochland Fellowship and Family Services organization to again provide leadership, prominence and fine services to the Goochland community. God help us. Stan Domnick Rockville

Letting polo go a mistake I served as a volunteer and donor for many years to the Goochland Fellowship and Family Services (GFFS). The organization had weekly functions, announcements, and tremendously valuable services to the community. It now has disappeared. I first started volunteering for this once fine organization in the early 90’s. I helped detail a community plan and needs identification with the Fellowship in the 2000’s. We defined many needs such as child and senior care. Both

Variety of 4-H programs available to area youth Contributed Report

When asked what 4-H is many people may answer that it is about cows, cooking and 4-H camp. 4-H can offer so much more in today’s society. 4-H is a community of young people across America learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. Youth between the ages of 5 and 18 have an opportunity to engage in hands-on learning experiences under the guidance of an adult or teen volunteer. Youth between the ages of 5-8 years old can participate in our 4-H Cloverbud programs. Youth ages 9-18 have an opportunity to participate in 4-H clubs, become teen leaders, camp counselors and participate in state-wide events. Even adults can be a part of the 4H program by volunteering their time and sharing their knowledge on specific topic areas with youth. Currently Goochland 4-H has the following clubs that includes animal science, horse, Cloverbuds, shooting sports and home economics. The Animal Science 4-H club offers youth 9-18 years of age a chance to learn about the basic care of livestock animals, show their animals at local fairs and learn about agriculture. The 4-H Thunderhooves is our county horse club that allows youth 9-18 years of age to learn about horsemanship and participate in horse shows, clinics and much more. The Home Economic Club is a new club this fall for youth ages 918 years of age who are interested in crafts, sewing and cooking. Another new 4-H club is the Goochland 4-H Shooting Sports Education Club for youth 9-18 see 4-H> 10

Goochland Robotics sweep competition; BES, RES take top spots Contributed report

Goochland County Public Schools showed well earlier this month in the regional FIRST Robotics tournament at Maggie. L Walker Governor’s School, bringing home a handful of awards including a first and second place finish in the tournament for Byrd and Randolph Elementary schools, respectively. At the competition on Saturday, November 7, GCPS teams excelled in teamwork skills, robot design and research. Byrd Elementary’s team, the Mega Robo Byrd Team, captured the Division I Championship and will compete in the state championship on the campus of James Madison University in Harrisonburg December 5-6. Coming in second to Byrd in the regional competition was a famil-

iar team, the Randolph Elementary School “Traveling Traffic Crushers.” Randolph’s team not only finished second in the tournament but also won the Teamwork Division I Award. Also at the elementary level, the Goochland Elementary team, LEGO Kings, won first place for Robot Design. Meanwhile, the Goochland Middle School team, GMS Rockerz, won second place in the Teamwork Division II. The competition involves missions relating to traffic. Each mission revolves around avoiding impacts, gaining access to areas, and surviving impacts, among other tasks. Teams, which are supported financially both by the school division and the community, earn points for completing each mission with their robot. The competition also involved a

research project requiring students to look at their communities and discover how people, animals, information, and things travel. Once they completed the research, they then had to decide what types of problems exist in their area and work as a team to solve the traffic problems using an innovative solution. The Mega Robo Byrd Team created and built a “traffic subtractor” machine. Glenda Hawk coaches the BES team along with parent volunteers Rob Carscadden and Bryant Clark. Courtesy Photo

Members of the Byrd team that will head to the state championship include: Hannah Meyer, Christopher Pinkston, Henry Carscadden, Payton Harrigal, Joshua Payne, Lane Martin, Kade Adamy, Cody Clarke, Tyler Gentry and Jamathan Myles.

Judges rule roost and tame Bulldogs 30-20

Miscues, penalties sink Bulldogs in playoffs By Jim Ridolphi sports@mechlocal.com

F

or the second year in a row, Goochland’s playoff hopes ended a long way from home on an unfamiliar field. On Saturday afternoon, the Bulldogs dropped a 30-20 decision to the Handley Judges in the second round of Group AA Region 2, Division 3 playoffs at the Handley Bowl in Winchester. The Judges utilized a power running game featuring University of Maryland commit Jeremiah Wilson and pinpoint situational passing from quarterback Geremi Long to notch the win. The Judges will play Park View in next week’s regional finals. Following a bad snap on a punt on Goochland’s first possession, the

Judges took the ball and converted a short field to take a 7-0 edge with six minutes remaining in the first period. When David Carter intercepted a Matthew Henley pass on the Bulldogs second possession, it looked like the Judges would score again but the Goochland defense stopped the potent Handley attack and forced an unsuccessful field goal attempt. Early in the second quarter, the Bulldogs drove deep into Handley territory and attempted a fourth down field goal from the 30-yard line. Another bad snap forced the Bulldogs to pick up the ball and run for a first down. Dustin Plummer capped that drive with a fourth down, a oneyard run to level the contest. Another bad snap resulted in a Goochland safety shortly before intermission and the Judges held a

9-7 lead at halftime. “You can’t make those kinds of mistakes in a playoff game and expect to win,” Coach Joe Fowler said following the contest. “The penalties and mistakes really added up today.” Despite the miscues, the Bulldogs took their first lead of the game in the early in the second half when BJ Clark returned a punt for an 84yard touchdown, giving Goochland a 14-9 advantage with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. “I was hoping that would change the momentum and we could build on that, but they were just bigger, stronger and faster in the second half,” Fowler said. “Our defense just couldn’t stop Wilson in the second half. He’s a great running back with or without good legs.” Wilson entered the contest nursing two leg injuries but the ailments didn’t hamper his performance

against the Bulldogs. He finished with two fourth quarter touchdowns. “I can’t say enough about the Wilson kid coming here and grinding it out with two bad legs,” Fowler said. “He’s an amazing athlete.” Handley regained the lead on a 15-yard scamper by Kenny Griffin and the Judges were up 16-14 with five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Plummer scored his second touchdown late in the third period on a 30-yard sweep that put the Bulldogs up 20-16. Wilson put the Judges up for good in the fourth quarter on a three-yard run. Handley led 2320 early in the fourth quarter. He added to that lead with a second fourth quarter TD and the Judges led 30-20 with six minutes remaining. Fowler said his team lost to a

“great football team”, and was proud of the Bulldogs’ performance. “I thought the kids played great football today,” Fowler said. “I’m proud of the effort they gave, especially the seniors who have been with us for four years.” Even with the defeat, Fowler didn’t diminish the successes of this year’s squad. “They had a great season this year and surprised a lot of people and we couldn’t be prouder of them,” he said. At the end of the hard fought contest, several players from each squad had to be restrained as emotions boiled over. Fowler said it was an uncharacteristic display from his Bulldogs, and he was obviously shaken by the confrontation. “I’m embarrassed by what happened at the end,” Fowler said. see Football > 11

Riot wins Fall Classic

Girls Basketball Preview

Lady Bulldogs will face challenges in new division and new district BY SARA BONOVITCH sports@goochlandgazette.com

T

he River City Riot Girls 12U Fastpitch Softball Team, led by Goochlanders Jackie Tremain, Carly Plummer and Casey Spencer, wrapped up their fall season by taking home the first place trophy in the Powhatan Fall Classic Tournament last weekend. Coming off a first place finish in SoftballNation’s Halloween Cup held at Dorey Park two week prior, the Riot was anxious for a repeat performance in their final tournament for the year. After three pool play games on Saturday, the Riot entered the single elimination playoff on Sunday as a number three seed in their bracket. The girls were able to knock off their first three opponents to earn a spot in the semifinals against the number one seed, Orion Hunter from Virginia Beach. After falling behind 5-0 in the first inning, the girls came alive. Plummer started up the offense

in the top of the second by hitting a lead-off triple, sending the ball 200 feet in the air. Tremain took to the mound to start the second inning, shutting down the opponent’s offense for the rest of the game. Tremain recorded six strikeouts over the final five innings and was assisted by several great defensive plays from her Riot defense, including a spectacular catch in the right field by Spencer. In a heroic comeback, the Riot beat Orion Hunter 6-5. The Riot went on to the championship game against the Loudon Storm of Northern Virginia around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday- their fifth game that day and fourth in a row without a break. After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the girls stepped up their defense, heated up their bats and won the championship 6-3. The Riot ended their fall season on a high note, winning three of their five tournaments and now they are looking forward to another successful spring. ovember kicks off the season for holiday shopping, Thanksgiving dinners and the start of basketball season. In the spirit of the season, Goochland High School’s Sarah Nicholson and her varsity girls are ready to take the court for a new year in a new district with a new level of play. Nicholson is entering her second season as head coach of the varsity squad and the team began practice last week hoping for a successful year. “It’s still early,” she said, “but we had 21 girls come out for tryouts, which looks very promising and encouraging for this year.” For the 2009-2010 season, the Lady Bulldogs have five returning players and five new to the varsity squad. Senior Morgan Thompson is the only returning starter, but is joined by three more

seniors, Heather Dewar, Victoria Hope and Carrie Beth White who all have court experience. Junior Carrie Mills and sophomore Amara Ezell also logged much time on the floor last season. Nicholson will also look for contributions from junior Chelsea Pavona, sophomore Brianna Jackson and Freshmen Dana Rodriquez and Tammara Taylor. “We’re still a really young team,” said Nicholson, “but we have a nice mix of upperclassmen leadership and underclassmen talent. Morgan was one of our leaders last year, and I’m hoping to see more girls step into that leadership role on and off the court this year.” Entering the AA Jefferson District brings a new set of challenges to the Lady Bulldogs, but Coach Nicholson is confident that the girls can work hard to face their new opponents. “Going into a new district is

going to be tough,” she said. “We’re at a disadvantage because we don’t know much about our competition and haven’t faced teams other than Charlottesville and Fluvanna. We’re going to work for everything we get this season. Our goal is just to have more wins and work together more as a team.” Nicholson said she and the team will just take it game by game, and not look too far in advance. Right now the focus is getting back into shape, and practicing the basics. The varsity team struggled last year, and Nicholson hopes to improve this season. “Last season we learned a lot character wise, and what it’s like to be part of a team,” said Coach Nicholson. “We’re going to take what we learned and grow from it to be a better team this year.” The first game of the regular season is December 3 home date against the Fluvanna Flucos.

Thanksgiving at Meadow Farm By Ken Odor Media General Staff Writer Thanksgiving wasn’t a national holiday in the 1860s, according to Linda Eikmeier at Meadow Farm Museum. “It wasn’t a standardized holiday,” she said as she prepared a Thanksgiving dinner last Saturday at the site on Mountain Road in Henrico. Controversy still exists over where the first Thanksgiving was held, whether at Berkeley Plantation in Virginia or in Plymouth, Massachusetts by the Pilgrims. “In the beginning it was more of a religious event than an eating event,” she said. “You cooked up what you had. A chicken was a big deal.” Eikmeier said old layers that didn’t produce many eggs and excess roosters were prime candidates for roasting. Chicken was the main course for the dinner Eikmeier prepared last Saturday, as a group of about 10 visitors watched and pitched in. She trussed and hung the bird in a reflector oven (from the period, of course) and placed it in front of the fireplace. Then volunteer Natalee Wilson (8) from Chesterfield helped her get the

stuffed pumpkin ready for baking in a Dutch oven, laid on a bed of hot coals from the fire. Wilson scooped out the seeds. Then she and Lisa Rearden (6) from Richmond helped make the filling for the pumpkin. Rearden broke the eggs and the two girls mixed bread crumbs along with the eggs, water and seasoning before pouring it into the pumpkin, which had to be trimmed on top to fit it into the Dutch oven. As the preparations progressed more visitors arrived to watch the process. Wilson’s mom Jennifer said they saw the event online. “We always pull up the Meadow Farm Web site to see what’s going on,” she said. As she prepared the dinner with the help of her visitors, Eikmeier talked about the evolution of the holiday, including the crusade of woman’s magazine editor Sara Hale in the 19th century to have the day declared a national holiday. President Abraham Lincoln declared the final Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day in 1863. But it didn’t become official until an act of Congress finally made Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1941.

HCPS educator joins select group to bolster library media standards Contributed Report Ann M. Martin, an Educational Specialist for Library Information Services, has been chosen by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) to serve on a committee composed of a select group of educators nationwide to assure the National Board’s Library Media

Standards reflect the best practices and latest research in the field. The 12-member committee, which includes 6 National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs), was chosen from a pool of 425 applicants. According to Martin, “The updating of the existing NBPTS in library media is critical to educational reform. The

revisions will define an accomplished library media specialist who addresses how and what is required to master an evolving library environment. The work of this committee will positively affect building level change and provide momentum to create a community of learners who are prepared for college and careers in a global world. There is no more challenging opportunity

than to be part of a team of educators charged with the responsibility to lead change for the profession.” Today, there are more than 2,100 teachers nationwide who have achieved National Board Certification in Library Media who are working every day to provide excellent teaching to all students, lead within their schools, and mentor new and struggling peers.

“Ann is a leader in education and brings a commitment of excellence to the school he/she works in and more importantly, to the students he/she serves,” said Joan Auchter, chief program officer, NBPTS. “By overseeing the accomplished teaching standards, his/her work will serve as the foundacontinued on page 3

tion for the assessment in the National Board Certification process in Library Media.” As part of the National Board’s ongoing mission to provide leading standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do, NBPTS Standards Committees are periodically formed to review the standards. Practicing classroom teachers fill a majority of seats on standards committees with other members representing districts, states and higher education. Committees reflect the nation’s regional and ethnic diversity as well as the range of teaching contexts and professional views that exist about what constitutes accomplished teaching. Martin
