The new Goochland County Animal Shelter has been open since June, and these days one thing is for certain: Business is booming. According to Animal Control Director Tim Clough, the shelter has seen a sharp increase in the number of animals taken in, and he told the Goochland County Board of Supervisors earlier this month that he is projecting an increase of around 48 percent — or about 900 animals — in the first quarter of the coming year if current trends continue. Fortunately, the department remains in the best possible position to handle the increase in volume thanks to the spacious, modern new animal shelter that officially opened in June. “I guess they say if you build it they will come, and for the Animal Shelter that has certainly been the case,” Clough told supervisors. The new facility at 1900 Hidden Rock Lane is a vast improvement over the previous shelter, offering far more space, convenience and equipment upgrades, as well as a dedicated

Animal Control does not trap or relocate nuisance animals, Clough explained, but will respond to any call for service involving wildlife (105 so far this year) including injured animals. Once on-site, officers will help connect residents with the resources they need, including connecting them with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Holiday Celebration and Christmas Tree Lighting

Contributed Report

As COVID-19 cases increase across the country, Goochland County and the Chickahominy Health District (CHD) want to take a moment to share some tips for safely celebrating this Thanksgiving and holiday season. Unfortunately, household gatherings could potentially contribute to the rise in COVID-19 cases, if not held with safety measures in place. Consider how your holiday plans could be modified to stop the spread of COVID-19 and keep your friends, families, and communities healthy. Celebrating at home with members of your own household or celebrating virtually is the safest option and poses the lowest risk for spread. Consider preparing traditional dishes with those in your household or hosting a virtual dinner and share recipes with family and friends. Pass the time by watching parades, sporting events and movies at home. If you gather, do so wisely and take precautions to minimize the spread of COVID19. Keep your gathering small, short and local. If possible, stay outside and ensure proper ventilation if indoors. Wear masks and social distance; in addition, wash your hands regularly, especially before and after eating. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages folks to avoid unsafe activities and events that may pose a higher risk for spreading COVID-19, which include large gathersee Safety > page 4

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

College assignment offered new take on meaning of gratitude By Roslyn Ryan Editor

While it may seem at first to be a terribly well-worn cliché, have you ever noticed that often the people who seem to consider themselves the most blessed are the people who don’t necessarily possess significant wealth, status or any of the other trappings often associated with The Good Life? As I may have mentioned a time or two in these pages, one of the best things that ever happened to me was having the good fortune, back in my first year of college at Virginia Commonwealth University, to have found myself in Dr. Dan Mouer’s Introduction to Anthropology. It was a wonderful course and he was an outstanding teacher, but, what made it particularly special, as I recall, was one specific course requirement: In order to pass the class, each and every student had to volunteer their time working with an area organization that helped resettle recently arrived refugees. As students, most of us didn’t have the skill sets to be able to help with housing or employment, so we often found ourselves dispatched to homes to serve as practice partners for those learning English or as “homework helpers” for their children. This was the late 1990s, and many of the refugees being resettled in Richmond were those who had survived the devastat-

ing war in Bosnia. They had seen brutality and violence on a scale most of us could not imagine, seen family members and friends killed, and been forced from their homes and everything they knew. They then often spent months, sometimes years, in refugee camps or other places where life was lived in a monotonous holding pattern. By the time they arrived in Richmond, many of them had already endured more hardship than most of us will see in a lifetime. In spite of this, almost all of the refugees that I met seemed to take an incalculable joy in things that most Americans would see as terribly mundane. Trips to well-stocked grocery stores, strolls through safe, quiet streets — all of it was new and wonderful and cause for giving thanks. Even years later, when the blessings of my own life seem to take a back seat to whatever troubles have befallen me (almost always minor things that feel monumental in the moment), I will often think back to my time spent with those families. This Thanksgiving, one that falls in a year when many of us feel like we have arrived in a strange new world that we struggle to understand, I hope to remember to give thanks for things previously taken for granted. Even in this still-trying time, we wish all of our readers a wonderful Thanksgiving and a joyful start to the holiday season.

Letters to the Editor Local volunteers made Election Day successful again Dear Editor, As this letter is being written we are still awaiting the final results in one of the longest elections in modern times. (Long-time residents will remember that, although the election began with early voting in April of 1800, Goochland native Thomas Jefferson did not learn he had been elected president until February 17, 1801 — two weeks before his inauguration.) In Virginia this year, voting began 45 days before the election and final returns from the November 3rd election show Goochland’s turnout was 86.3% of active voters, about 12% higher than the reported 74.6% statewide average. Once again Goochland leads the Commonwealth in voter turnout. We are thankful that citizens throughout the county were able to exercise their franchise without any serious difficulties or impediments. The turnout of In-Person Absentee voters at the Satellite Precinct adjacent to the new office of the General Registrar was unprecedented: 7,984 cast their ballots before November 1 and 2,825 mail-

in ballots were processed at the Central Absentee Precinct. Another 6,173 voted on election day. As you prepare for Thanksgiving Day, please remember your neighbors whose sense of patriotic responsibility, in the face of the Pandemic, made this possible. We are particularly indebted to the many firsttime officers who stepped in to replace some of our “highmileage” regulars whose vulnerability led to their furloughs. Goochland United Soccer Association’s U12 Dynamite won the 2020 Richmond Kickers Mega Blast Revolution tournament championship with a 3-0 run in the two-day tournament.

GUSA U12 delivers Dynamite performance By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

RICHMOND – Goochland United Soccer Association’s U12 Dynamite team capped its dominant 2020 fall season with an unbeaten run through the Richmond Kickers Mega Blast Tournament to win the U12 Revolution championship. A lot of the team’s players, coached by Michael Wallmeyer and Jason Funkhouser, had been together since U8 and have carried that chemistry into the higher age divisions. “Getting them all to play and get out there has been great, seeing them grow and develop as players,” Wallmeyer said. The young team, featuring mostly 10-year-olds with three 11-year-olds and two members

aged 8 and 6, respectively, won all but one of its games this fall, with its one non-win ending in a tie. After winning all four of its games to earn the U12 Capital Fall Classic Tournament championship in early November, the Dynamite started the Mega Blast U12 Revolution tournament in strong fashion, beating two different Richmond Kickers teams, 6-1 and 3-0. Those wins set up a winner-takes-all game on Sunday, with the Dynamite’s opponent, Colonial Heights CHSA Thunder, also winning both of its games on Saturday. The Thunder struck first to lead 1-0, but brothers Jonathan and Isaiah Worthington delivered back-to-back goals at the half. Jonathan tied the game

on a penalty kick, and Isaiah netted a short-distance strike to push Goochland into the lead. Colonial Heights in the second half struck back to tie

the game, but Isaiah, with a sliding kick, scooted the ball into the corner of the goal to lift his team ahead of their opponents for the final time that day.

Goochland held on to win 3-2, and it did so despite a couple of key players going out of the game at intervals due to getting hurt. Wallmeyer said they played

“seamlessly without any interruption.” “I just enjoyed working with these kids,” Wallmeyer said. “I can’t wait for spring to start up.”

Powhatan Fury FC team takes finalist honors Contributed Reports

As coach of Powhatan Fury FC’s U13/14 girls travel team, which features players from both Powhatan and Goochland, Andrew Kaiser saw all of the girls’ training and hard work come to fruition during the Capital Fall Classic Girls Weekend tournament, in which they earned finalist honors. Powhatan’s tournament performance was impressive considering the team was formed by combining two teams. The team members were born in 2007-2008, and for nearly two-thirds of the team, this season was the first time they had played 11-on-11 soccer. Playing in the 2007/U14 age group, the girls played older and physically larger teams in most of their games during the regular season and tourna-

ment. Additionally, the team does not have a player who specializes in goalkeeping, so field players Emily Gibbs, Annabel Yates and Ellie Lowery took turns playing in goal. But despite many of the team members playing a year up, Kaiser said they were still competitive. “During the tournament I saw the team apply concepts and principles we had worked on all season long,” Kaiser said. “It was a joy to work with the team this season; however, finishing the season as finalists was definitely a bonus.” During Saturday group play, the team tied with Culpeper SC Comets 2007 1-1 and defeated VYSA 07 Premier Royal 3-1 to finish in first place in Group A. In Sunday’s semifinals, the team defeated SOCA Cville 07 Classic 2-1, then played to a 0-0 halftime score against

VYSA in the final before eventually losing 5-0. Team members are Addison Benge, Addison Wallace, Annabel Yates, Cadence Walton, Ella Chewning, Ellie Lowery, Emily Gibbs, Emmy Bruce, Lindsey Burnet, Meredith Eastwood, Savannah Forkey, Sydney McCracken, Valentina Shultz,

Ginny Hayden and Yerilynn Ramirez. “Not enough can be said towards the desire I saw from every player to succeed and perform to the best of their abilities,” Kaiser said. “By the end of the tournament I think the team as a whole was able to reflect and think about how much they’ve improved and learned from the beginning of

the season.” Their result as finalists in the tournament, Kaiser said, could not have been achieved without the commitment and support of the parents, the club and team manager Cheri Burnet. “I am so proud of these girls. They have worked hard and really come together as a team,” Burnet said. “They had

some tough games during the regular season and it would have been easy to become frustrated, but they remained positive and supportive of each other. “They really get along and their friendship is a special part of the team,” Burnet said. “It was fantastic to see their hard work pay off in the tournament.”

GUSA U14 ties Rockville in regular season finale By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

Trailing Rockville 3-0 at the halftime break, Goochland United Soccer Association’s U14 coed team changed up the strategy and unleashed a fiery rally to string together three goals and end the game in a 3-3 tie for a 6-3-1 regular season. “I couldn’t believe it – what

a way to finish the season for both teams!” said GUSA coach Brian Boyle, who added that his players “didn’t get down.” “They didn’t let the score get to them at all,” he said. “They just came out here to play.” Jesus Gonzalez, Jayme Roblero and Sydney Jones scored the three second-half goals for Goochland, with Gonzalez hammering a long-

sailing kick way over the goalie’s head, Roblero scooting through a groundball penalty kick and Jones footing in the game-tying ball. After taking two losses in the Richmond Kickers Mega Blast tournament on Saturday, the U14 team on Sunday dominated its Lake Gaston Soccer Lakehawks opponent, winning 7-2.

Federal voting legislation needed to keep vote safe Editor, Early in our history only land owners could vote, and then only men could vote, and then women were allowed to vote, and finally Blacks were allowed to vote. So we have an uncomfortable history concerning the right to vote. Not long ago voting required visiting a polling place and showing some ID to vote. Wreathmaking Workshop

Group seeking input for housing survey How does Goochland measure up when it comes to housing? That is what a group called HousingGVA has been meeting about for the last year. This group has set out to understand the full scope of housing in Goochland. With a grant from Virginia Housing Development Association, the committee hired housing experts, hdAdvisors, to assess our housing situation. The assessment is slated for completion in Spring 2021 and will include existing data as well as responses from a community-wide survey. In this survey, the organization wants to hear about your dreams, needs, concerns, and hopes for housing in Goochland. Please go to http://gvahousingneeds.questionpro.com to have your opinions count! If you do not have internet access, please call Carol Dunlap at (804) 556-0400 and we will mail you a paper copy. Your voice and all voices are important!
