Election puts nine new members on Goochland County boards By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
Goochland County will have two very new looking boards next year. In an election billed by many as the most important in decades, 46.5 percent of Goochland’s 15,588 registered voters cast ballots, according to unofficial results, changing the face of Goochland County government. Only one incumbent candidate up for reelection, District 3 supervisor Ned Creasey, was victorious. Goochland’s new School Board line up is: Mike Payne, Kevin Hazzard, John Lumpkins, Beth Hardy and John Wright. Three incumbents, District 1 James Haskell, District 2 Raymond Miller and District 3Ivan Mattox were defeated. In District 1, challenger Payne easily defeated long-time incumbent James Haskell with almost 64 percent of the vote. Miller faced two opponents in District 2, where he lost to Hazzard, who polled 55 percent with Penny Palen in third place. Challenger John Lumpkins bested current School Board Chairman Ivan Mattox soundly in District 3, winning 70 percent of the vote. District 4 pitted Phil Davis against Hardy in a contest for an open seat after the retirement of Andrew Meng. Hardy won convincingly, garnering 72 percent of the vote. John Wright won in District 5, where he was uncontested. Creasey, who defeated Independent Alan Tucker with almost 71 percent of the vote, will Contributed Photo be joined on the Board of Supervisors by Susan The broom at the top of Michael McDermott’s collage of campaign signs tells

Only one GOP backed candidate for the two boards lost, District 4 incumbent Rudy Butler, but by the narrowest of margins. Challenger Bob Minnick took the seat by six votes, 844 to 834. Committee Chairman Ben Slone was gratified. “This is what happens when you get good candidates,” he said. Contacted Wednesday afternoon, Butler said he was considering asking for a recount. “We’re in the process of weighing our options, talking to legal counsel,” said Butler. The six vote margin is less than 1 percent of the 1,680 votes cast for supervisor in the district. In the only contested Constitutional Officer race, Interim Treasurer Pam Johnson easily bested Tana Marie Hogue for the Treasurer’s spot, taking 83 percent of the vote total. Sheriff Jim Agnew, Commissioner of the Revenue Jean Bryant and Commonwealth’s Attorney Claiborne Stokes all were reelected in uncontested races. In General Assembly contests, Louisa Commonwealth’s Attorney Tom Garrett (R) beat Lynchburg businessman Bert Dodson (D) by a comfortable margin, taking 67 percent of the vote total in the contest for the new 22nd District State Senate seat. Republicans took two uncontested races for the House of Delegates. Peter Farrell, who was nominated to replace incumbent Bill Janis when Janis opted to run for Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney, won in the 56th District. Incumbent Lee Ware triumphed in District 65. Jonathan Lyle and Ronald Nuckols were elected as Goochland’s Soil and Water Conservation Directors in the Monacan District. Republicans gathered at White Hawk Café Tuesday night to celebrate their near clean sweep. A cheer went up when Creasey arrived and he addressed the crowd, as did Slone and several other victorious candidates. Creasey, although surprised at Butler’s loss to Minnick, said Wednesday he was not surprised by the turnover at the School Board and that he welcomed it. “The students will really benefit from the change,” said

Creasey. “It will make it easier to work with the School Board.” Minnick said he knew his race with Butler would be close. “We felt we could win if we got the voters to the polls. Minnick said he used newspaper and radio advertisements to increase his name recognition, plus the usual door-to-door campaigning. Minnick said his background in managing budgets in his career as an officer in the U.S. Army and his experience running a small business would serve him well on the board. Several of the future supervi-
sors said they were meeting with County Administrator Rebecca Dickson and would attend a VACo class for new supervisors in early January to assist in the transition. Lascolette said the new board may meet before being sworn in. “We want that meeting to be public although it is not required,” she said. She also said she would move to have the scheduled supervisors’ salary increase canceled. Alvarez, who triumphed in District 2 with 61 percent of the vote, said the votes showed the
citizens wanted change. “Since the election people have told me they would not have voted for me if I hadn’t come to their home,” said Alvarez, who said the central question now is, “What can we do to rebuild the trust in the community?’ District 5’s Ken Peterson called the election a “watershed event for the county. The big winners were the voters; they had more choices,” he said, adding that he planned to attend the VACo seminar and was looking for educational opportunites to help with the transition.

Byrd Elementary School’s Literacy Day Contributed Report
Byrd Elementary’s First Annual Literacy Day was held on Wednesday, November 9th. Many local “celebrities” visited Byrd to read to our students. Along with our “celebrity” readers, Byrd Elementary hosted two local Virginia authors. Betty Ellett, a literacy specialist from Fredericksburg, who wrote The ABCs of Ghana, visited each of the kindergarten through second grade classes to have an “author talk” with the students. Through money provided by the Byrd PTA, Kohls Department Store, and other anonymous donations, each kindergarten through 2nd grade student received an autographed copy of her book! Goochland Deputy County Administrator John Wack painted a sobering picture last week when he gave a presentation on projected revenues for the next fiscal year. Total revenue is projected to be $39,098,387, down $821,176 compared to FY2012, when the budget included $1,375,953 from the General Fund Balance. No transfer from fund balance was included in the projections Wack presented last week for FY2013. Although some sources of revenue are expected to increase, county real estate tax collections are expected to decline for the fourth year in a row, from $20.92 million in FY2012 to $20.27 million in FY2013.

But personal property taxes are projected to increase from $8.29 million to $9.34 million. Several other categories should show modest increases, Wack told the board. But interest income is expected to fall to $20,000, as opposed to more than $1 million in FY2007 before the onset of the present economic difficulties. When expected higher payouts for increases in health care premiums, expiring grant income for certain school positions and increases in Virginia Retirement System payments for both schools and county employees are factored in, Wack said the county might face a $3.3 million shortfall, although he called the VRS increase, up to $1.48 million for school employees, a “worst case scenario.” Wack said typically the General Assembly comes in with a lower figure than the first projections. The Board of Supervisors adopts its budget calendar in January and generally approves the final budget in April.

Louisa Commonwealth Attorney Tom Garrett has a new job. In January when the General Assembly reports to Richmond, he will be Sen. Garrett after defeating Lynchburg businessman Bert Dodson for the newly created 22nd district Virginia Senate seat. With 82-of-85 precincts reporting, Garrett had 27,211 votes to Dodson’s 19,240. “I’m very blessed,” Garrett said by phone. “I don’t know where to start in trying to thank people. We’ve had so much support throughout the district from people who believed in our fiscal responsibility policies. We call it kitchen table politics, but it really comes down to being able to get and pay for what you need and not what you want.” Garrett said Gov. McDonald had called but that he was so busy at the time that he missed the call. “Mr. Dodson also called to congratulate us on winning,” Garrett added. “He’s a real gentleman and ran a great campaign. I told him if there was any issue he wanted to discuss to get in touch with me that I also represent him and his supporters.” The newly created 22nd district includes eight counties and the city of Lynchburg. Garrett won seven of the eight

county races and almost won Lynchburg, where Dodson lives and has name recognition due to his business and political activities in the area. Both candidates said they had to do well on their home turf to win. For Garrett, his home county is Louisa and for Dodson, the City of Lynchburg. Garrett won the battle of Louisa by 1,196 votes, 1,712 to 518. Dodson won the City of Lynchburg by 1,192 votes, 4,839 to 3,647. Attempts to reach Mr. Dodson were unsuccessful, but his Campaign Manager Lonny Paris spoke for him. “Mr. Dodson has called Senator elect Garrett to congratulate him and concede the election,” Paris said. “He said that he is grateful for everyone’s efforts and generosity for his campaign. Mr. Dodson plans to return to running his family business [Dodson Pest Control] and will remain active in civic and political matter in the Lynchburg area.”

County turned upside down Now that a few days have passed since last week’s election, we’ve all had time to sit back and digest it. Here’s what happened: Version 1: Tired incumbents on the Board of Supervisors and the School Board with more than 100 years of experience have been replaced by talented newcomers. Version 2: A gaggle of brash idealists with no idea of what they were getting themselves into have taken over from the ousted veterans, only to face the same intractable problems their predecessors couldn’t fix. Version 3: After several years of revelations of mismanagement, a poor economy, cuts in services especially at schools and finally a guilty plea to embezzlement by the Treasurer, the voters thought it was time for a change. A big one. So they acted. That’s the version we feel comes closest to describing what actually happened. In fact, after the series of problems faced by the county it would have been beyond our comprehension had there not been a hard-fought campaign. But without the hard work of developing candidates as alternatives to the current officeholders the voters would have had no choices. That’s where the Goochland GOP Committee and its chair Ben Slone came in. We’ve been reading with some amusement various comments coming into the Gazette Web site about “puppet master” Slone and how he changed Goochland politics. We think maybe it’s a little more complicated than that. After all, independent Bob
Minnick defeated long-time incumbent Republican Rudy Butler. Fact is, the changes on the boards would not have been possible without acceptable candidates, individuals who put in the time and effort it takes to come from nowhere to achieve the name recognition it takes to win races against well known incumbents. It’s to their credit they took the plunge and evidence of the pool of qualified people in Goochland County that they were available. Now we’ll see what they can do. To qualify our remarks above. We believe now and always have believed that all the candidates have acted in what they perceived as being in their own and the county’s best interests. We especially appreciate Chairman Quarles gracious letter to the voters after his defeat by challenger Manuel Alvarez. Now, with little more than a month to get ready, we wish the newcomers well in tackling the problems facing Goochland. They’ll need all the skill, experience and enthusiasm they can muster as they go forward. One thing we do expect is a closer and more effective working relationship between the supervisors and members of the School Board. That in itself should streamline the budget process and produce a more team-oriented approach to allocating the county’s limited funds. So good luck to the newcomers to county government and thanks to those who did their best in the past.

continued from > page 6 In my world this seems tantamount to an end run around rezoning. Is this right? Is this fair? The Goochland Comprehensive Plan calls for low density residential/open space. Would the Board of Supervisors, most of whom are lame ducks, choose to subvert the plan and vote in favor of Benedictine’s CUP? I hope that they would have more integrity than that. In the November 14 issue of the online newspaper, BizSense, there was an article about a group of Powhatan citizens who were “so vehemently against a proposed apartment complex near their property [that] they’ve sued the county’s board of supervisors for making changes to the comprehensive plan to allow the development. ‌ Several homeowners who have property adjacent to the proposed development and other nearby residents are strongly opposed to the project, which they say threatens the rural nature of the community and could increase crime, snarl traffic and strain the county’s limited resources.â€? Bullying continued from > page 3 the nurse’s station for treatment. Her shoulder was swelling and attempts were made to control it. Finally, just before 2 p.m. her mother was called. “I was told Ashley had hurt her arm and I needed to come pick her up,” Lisa Rines said. “They wouldn’t tell me what was wrong with her or how it happened. I picked her up about 2:30 p.m. and took her to St. Mary’s Hospital.” Ashley was seen at the hospital’s emergency room and then on Wednesday, an orthopedist examined her arm and shoulder. Rines has suffered injuries to her right rotator cuff. She has her arm in a sling and is undergoing physical therapy for the next three weeks to determine the extent of the injuries. “We are arranging for her to start home schooling,” Lisa said. “I know what has happened to some kids who have bullying problems and they couldn’t handle it. I’m not going to lose my daughter to a situation like that.” The mother said that there was a significant bullying problem at the school that teachers and administrators are not doing anything about.

“There is a saying at the high school that snitches get stitches, or end up in ditches,” she said. “Ashley has reported his bullying against her to teachers and her councilor and nothing has been done.” When contacted and asked about the Rines incident, School Superintendent Linda Underwood declined to comment, noting that school policy prohibited discussion of student matters. She did say that bullying is not tolerated and is dealt with immediately. “I don’t think they have done anything to discipline him,” Lisa said. “He has been charged with assault, and as far as we know, he is still in school.” When Goochland High School Principal Francie Ball was reached by phone and asked if the boy in question was still in school, she said, “It’s school policy that we don’t discuss specific student situations.” When asked to speak in general terms about what a student facing police charges can expect as far as school discipline, she said, “A student might be in trouble with police and not in trouble at school, or in trouble at school and not with the police. Sometimes, a student might be in trouble with both. Problems at school are dealt
with on an individual basis.” Lisa described her family as being a Christian family. “I believe in God and I can forgive him,” Ashley said. “He needs help. He needs to have God in his life and stop doing things like this.” Even if changes at Goochland High School were made, she said she wasn’t going back. “It’s not just my problem and it’s not just in the high school,” Ashley added. “I know bullying also goes on in Goochland Middle School.” Emotions, tears and obvious pain, couldn’t be held back by Ashley, Lisa and her brother Jonathan. Jonathan is well over six feet and weighs about 275 pounds. He is two years older than Ashley. “I’ve walked around school with Ashley kind of acting like her bodyguard,” he said. “The teachers and administrators either can’t, or won’t, do anything about the bullying.” Jonathan now takes classes at another school because he was able to combine his junior and senior years and graduate a year early. “The name calling and bullying seems to have gotten worse for Ashley since he changed schools,” Lisa said.

Veterans continued from >1 the jazz chorus and band, told the audience that the nation was treating its veterans well – a good thing, since less than 1 percent of the country’s population are defending freedom today. “Never have so many owed so much to so few,” said Wadle, quoting Winston Churchill, England’s Prime Minister during WWII, who spoke those words to praise English pilots during the Battle of Britain. Wadle reminded the audience of the cost of the war in which Rowe served, with its 50 to 70 million dead. “If we had lost the war to the Axis Powers, Germany, Japan and Italy, the entire world would have descended into a new Dark Age and I’m not sure to this day we would have seen the light again of freedom,” said Wadle. Rowe continued on the theme of the magnitude of the war that he entered as a young man. “World War Two was the largest event in human history,” said Rowe, who noted that the U.S. put 16 million men and women in uniform and suffered 292,000 dead. Rowe then went on to recount his war-time experiences in a low-key matter of fact fashion. Enlisting at age 19 on Dec. 7, 1942, Rowe was accepted into pilot training after the U.S. Army Air Corps waived the requirement that pilot trainees have two years of college, due to the high loss rate of crew members in the air war. “Being one of the bomber boys of WWII was the second most dangerous assignment of American service members,” said Rowe, exceeded only by submarine crews. More that 53,000 Army Air Corps members were

killed, said Rowe, more than all Navy and Marine losses combined. Rowe flew 13 combat missions and was shot down twice. The first time he crash landed his aircraft at an allied base after being hit by anti-aircraft fire. The second time, on February 9, 1945, his bomber was again hit by flak on a mission over Magdeburg, Germany, and lost two of its four engines before the crew bailed out. Rowe was captured three days later after evading the enemy and spent the last few months of the war as a POW. After the war Rowe was returned to the U.S. in June, where he was treated for hepatitis and malnutrition, where he turned 21. Rowe stayed in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years before retirement and later worked for the state of Virginia, retiring again as Director of the Department of Aviation. He is a member of the Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame of the Virginia Aeronautical Historical Society. Rowe said younger veterans from the current all-volunteer force continue to involve them-
selves in veterans affairs. “I don’t see a big difference, I do not,” said Rowe when asked if the present generation of veterans was different from the WWII generation. In addition to the speakers, the ceremony saw the reading of the traditional POW-MIA reso-
lution and featured music by the GHS Jazz Chorus and Band. The color guard was furnished by the Air Force ROTC from Deep Run High School. The ceremony ended with a moment of silence for the fallen and the playing of Taps.

Exceptional Saudi Arabian student surpasses graduation expectations
Contributed Photo
Abdulaziz Al-Qahtani, 16, graduated from J.R. Tucker in record time in order to get his diploma before his visa expired. His normal bedtime was 3 a.m. as he crammed his high school career into two very busy years.
Contributed Report by Natalie Allen Imagine waking up at 7 a.m. every morning to get to school by 8, going home for a rushed 30 minute break, and then heading back to class from 8p.m. to 10p.m. This already sounds like a lot, but this wasn’t even half of what 16-year-old Abdulaziz AlQahtani had to do in order to graduate from J.R. Tucker High School before his expiring Visa sent him back to Saudi Arabia. Once he finally got home after night classes, instead of sitting on a couch and putting his feet up, he sat at a computer to take yet another class. After his online course came homework, and then at around 3 a.m., Al-Qahtani could finally crawl into bed only to get barely enough sleep to start this same routine the next day and then the next. “Needless to say I didn’t sleep much,” Al-
Qahtani said. But this kind of hard work and dedication was not something foreign to him, but rather ingrained in him since childhood. “My dad would say, ‘You’re not like everybody else, you’re special, you can be something great,’” Al-Qahtani said gazing up toward the ceiling pensively. When asked what the great something was going to be, Al-Qahtani laughed. “I’m not sure, I’m only 16. But I know I want to be a businessman and I want to be like my dad, only better.” The idea of Al-Qahtani finishing high school in two years started as a joke between him and his parents. But after some research and a lot of help from Al-Qahtani’s school counselor, Ms. Blackman, they realized it was possible. And once a pipe dream became a definite possibility, Al-Qahtani had no choice but to put forth the effort. Not that he objected of course. “I knew it would be hard, but my parents have
always pushed me to work as hard as possible,” he said. “They knew I could do it.” Ms. Blackman had no doubt that Al-Qahtani had it in him to graduate by his August 4, 2011 deadline, either. “When he was charged with the task of graduating high school in two years, (just) months into his first year of high school, he was game. My impression was that he took pride in the challenge,” Blackman said. “This kid has the perspective and world view of a man well beyond his 16 years. He completely understands that education and sacrifice are essential to his future success.” In his native country, students were expected to take up to 18 courses a day. But Al-Qahtani had been in America since he was 7 years old and wasn’t used to this kind of rigor, at least not until he began his accelerated graduation schedule in the summer of 2010. He completed English 10 during the summer and then English 12 and US History via the fall session of evening school. He also completed Government and Algebra II online and completed Bio II and PE 10 through the spring session of evening school. After those courses were complete, he had two elective credits outstanding. He took Creative Writing through Independent Study and Spanish I this summer. He did all of this while taking seven full-year classes during the school day, not to mention he was on the honor roll for the duration. During the 20102011 school year, he completed 14 full year classes. An accomplishment that seems near impossible. In the last months of Al-Qahtani’s stay in America, he was without both his mother and father. His father is political figure in Saudi Arabia and had to return home and his mother was forced to go back to tend to her ill parent. “This has definitely been the hardest year of my life,” Al-Qahtani said. “It was very hard for me when my mom and dad left.” His sister, Reem sacrificed a job in Saudi Arabia to stay with her little brother while he finished school. “I owe her big time,” Al-Qahtani said. “I’ll make it up to her though.” As per Saudi tradition, studies were not to impede on family time.
“It is important to us to have this time,” Reem said. “To have lunch and dinner together and drink tea and talk. I tell him we have to have friendship inside our house. It is important for us to rely on each other.” In the U.S. Al-Qahtani did his best to not let his immense workload interfere with this quality time with his three brothers, two sisters, and his parents even if it meant the interaction was via the computer. “My dad and I would have dinner together on webcams over Skype,” Al-Qahtani said with a smile. “We tried our best to keep in touch.” Al-Qahtani’s relationship with his father is one of the most important things in his life. His father is his role model and best friend. “He has a great leadership style and treats everyone equally. He never judges anyone and always wants to help,” Al Qahtani said. “He told me not to compete against others, to only compete with myself.” Al-Qahtani graduated August 4 and went back to Saudi Arabia on the 5th. His embassy appointment was on the 6th to apply for another visa. Although he has bits and pieces of memory from living in Saudi Arabia, the U.S. has become his home. “I have trouble with my own language sometimes,” he said. “I don’t know much of Saudi history, either. I know the kings but that’s about it.” His sister, Reem gave him a smile when he said this. Reem is 24 and has a larger grasp on Saudi history and traditions. Al-Qahtani doesn’t know what he would do if he had to attend college in Saudi Arabia, “I could never pass their version of the SAT,” he said. “I don’t know anything.” He hopes to come back to America as soon as possible, and perhaps to even attend VCU in the fall. “I will miss people I have met here, people who have helped me. Especially my best friends Arsalan and Rachel,” Al-Qahtani said. “But at least the McDonalds in Saudi is WAY better.” Natalie Allen is the Communications Specialist for Henrico County Public Schools

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE: Gift ideas for sports fans & music lovers
Gift ideas for the family sports fan
Take tailgating to new heights Though the games themselves are important, sports fans will admit the camaraderie they feel with their fellow fans is a big part of their love of sports. And nowhere makes a better place to build those bonds with fellow fans than the pregame tailgate. This holiday season, make that tailgate even more enjoyable for your favorite sports fan with a new grill or deep fryer. Deep fryers come in many shapes and sizes, be it ones best suited to side dishes and smaller meals, or larger fryers that enable tailgaters to cook up some fried chicken or even a popular staple like deep fried turkey the whole parking lot can enjoy. For those who tailgate and have all the tools and gadgets they need, don’t overlook food for your favorite tailgater. A box of gourmet steaks can go a long way on a cold afternoon before the big game, and any veteran tailgater knows there’s no such thing as too much food.
Tickets to the big game For those sports nuts routinely relegated to the couch during their favorite team’s games, perhaps no gift is more appropriate than tickets to a sports arena.
Even if money is tight and tickets seem costly, shoppers can take advantage of a host of ways to purchase tickets at below-market costs. For example, many professional teams now allow their season ticket holders to sell their tickets to games right through the team’s Web site. Tickets might be discounted as ticket holders attempt to recoup some of their money for games they simply can’t attend. Another option when looking for affordable tickets is to peruse the Internet for Web sites like www.StubHub.com, where ticket seekers can often find discounted tickets to some of their favorite sporting events. In addition, peruse the local newspaper classifieds to see if anyone in your area is selling tickets. It’s often not as difficult as it might seem to find discounted tickets to even the most popular sporting events.

These gifts are music to music lovers’ ears
T
aste in music is a topic of eternal debate. Whether a person’s interests lean toward the Beatles or the Beastie Boys, there’s no denying most people love listening to music. Music can lift our moods and help us through difficult times, and it can also make the good times that much more enjoyable. Come the holiday season, many people look to music when gifting friends and family. Though it’s wise to avoid getting too specific with a musical gift for fear of offending personal taste, there are more general gifts shoppers can give that are sure to please.

Nowadays, many sports fans find themselves living far away from their favorite teams. New York natives living in California might have no way to watch their favorite Big Apple teams do battle and might be relegated to reading about their favorite players’ exploits in the morning newspaper. For shoppers who truly want to please their favorite sports fans this holiday season, consider purchasing them a subscription package that enables them to see their favorite team play regardless of where they live. Injuries don’t derail Bulldogs in playoff opener BY JIM RIDOLPHI Special Correspondent
The timing couldn’t have been worse. Goochland entered the first round of the Division II, Group A playoffs last week in less than perfect condition with several key players sidelined with injuries. It proved to be an obstacle but not one that could derail the Bulldogs’ post-season mission as Goochland ran away with a 45-7 victory over visiting Nottoway. “We have to answer the bell no matter who is missing,” said Goochland coach Joe Fowler. Playing without two of the team’s top running backs, the Bulldogs slugged their way to victory relying on reserves who readily stepped up for the contest. Coupled with a fourtouchdown performance by defensive back/running back Jake Martin, it was more than
enough to propel the Bulldogs past the Cougars and into a second round matchup with Central Woodstock this Friday. Martin opened the scoring with a seven-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter, followed by 33-yard Colby Cooke field goal. Late in the opening period, quarterback Cody Johnson found Martin for a 27-yard scoring strike, giving the Bulldogs a 17-0 lead. “It was a great pass from Cody Johnson, picture perfect,” Martin said. The Cougars answered with a six-yard run by Curtis Hurte, cutting the Bulldog lead to 177 at halftime. On the first possession of the second half, Goochland turned the ball over on downs and the Cougars engineered a drive deep in to Bulldog territory, but the defense rallied and held the visitors on downs.
Cougar quarterback Johnny Coombs found himself in the unenviable position of mounting a comeback in the fourth quarter and was forced to throw the ball against an aggressive Bulldog secondary. After Johnson scored on a one-yard run early in the fourth quarter, Martin picked off a Coombs pass and returned it 49 yards for another Bulldog score. He followed up with another pick-six minutes later on a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown. “It was great defense and I just read the quarterback and headed to the outside,” Martin said. Even with the absence of starters Patrick Clore and Mitchell Brice, the Bulldogs relied on steady running from Martin, Zakell Johnson and sophomore David Dyer. Johnson finished with 119 yards and Dyer added another

70. Despite the lopsided outcome, Fowler wasn’t thrilled with his team’s intensity, even with the injuries. “We came out okay, but played flat in the second quarter,” he said. “At halftime we had a long talk and reestablished our passion to play football. The kids responded great and came out
and played with more energy, more physical and were able to take advantage of some mistakes they made.” Fowler had a basic answer regarding the key to the Bulldogs playoff chances. “We have to run the ball more effectively than we did tonight,” he said. “We’re a running football team. That’s our identity and
that’s what we need to do.” Nottoway ended its season with a 3-7 mark. Cougar coach Grayson Throckmorton recognized gaining a playoff win against the Bulldogs was a long shot. “We had our backs against the wall with these expanded playoffs, but our kids played tough and didn’t give up,” he said. “Goochland is 10-0 for a reason and I wish them the best in the playoffs.” The Bulldogs host Central Woodstock this Friday at 7 p.m. Nottoway......................0 7 0 0 — 7 Goochland................ 17 0 0 28 — 45 G — Martin 7 run (Cooke kick) G — FG Cooke 33 G — Martin 27 pass from Johnson (Cooke kick) N — Hurt 6 run (Lovelace kick) G — C. Bulldog volleyball advances to state quarters BY JIM RIDOLPHI Special Correspondent
The Goochland volleyball team picked up two big wins in the Region B tournament before falling to Stuarts Draft in the championship. Still, the Bulldogs earned their first state tournament appearance since 2005. A win over visiting George Mason in the semifinals ensured a playoff spot for the Bulldogs, but it didn’t come easy. The victory also placed the Bulldogs in the regional championship game. Coach Jennifer Erixon’s team answered the call and defeated Mason in a five game nail-biter that never lacked in intensity. No one left early as the Bulldogs captured a back-and -forth victory over the visitors. The teams traded points in
the first game, but Goochland finally captured a hard fought 27-25 win. Mason stormed back in the second game, relying on powerful hitting and effective serving, to down the Bulldogs 25-21. Goochland refocused and took the third game 25-15, but the Mustangs rallied back in the fourth game 28-26 to level the match and send it to a final determining game. With the pressure increasing, the Bulldogs mounted a healthy 11-6 lead before the Mustangs mounted a comeback. But Goochland inched its way to a 15-9 win, securing the team a spot in this week’s state playoffs. “We really fought hard and it was real battle, but we came out victorious,” said Goochland junior Taylor Scruggs. “I’m really excited about going to
the states. It should be a great experience.” Junior Christina Mills returned this week after an injury and played a key role in the win against Mason, recording eight kills, two digs and nine blocks in the match. “I’m relieved that we won but we have to get ahead earlier. We need to work on that,” she said. Sydney Alvis had three aces, eight assists, eight kills and four digs against the Mustangs and has been reliable in the Bulldogs playoff run. “She does a great job keeping her confidence up and keeping her head in the game,” Erixon said. Mesa Willia added seven kills and two blocks while Chelsea Donaldson had three aces, seven kills and six digs in the win. Lainey Kopczynski also
continued her strong playoff performances. “She’s been really aggressive from front row with her attacking and has been one of the leading hitters in the past six matches,” Erixon said of Kopczynski. Jordan Fleming had 20 assists. Erixon didn’t discount her team’s resolve in defeating a game Mustang squad. “George Mason was incredibly scrappy and got almost everything we threw at them,” she said. “They never let their energy and momentum slow down.” Goochland couldn’t maintain the magic in the Region B finale against a strong hitting Stuarts Draft team. The Bulldogs fell 3-1 to the visitors after taking the first game 25-22. “We knew we would have a really tough game against
Stuarts Draft because they had beaten Bluestone and Strasburg very easily,” Erixon said. “My girls came out with intensity and aggressiveness, and were able to take the first game from Draft. We played pretty decent the next three games, but we were unable to keep up with the Draft hitters.” As the Region B runnerup, Goochland traveled to Matthews for the state quarterfinals on Tuesday. The coach felt the match with Matthews this week would require an extraordinary effort from her girls. “Mathews was the runnerup in last year’s state tournament, so I know they are determined to win this year,” she said. “I honestly believe my girls can win the game if they play to their potential. We’ve had a few issues with confidence in the past few games, and that cannot happen against
Mathews.” She quickly added that the match is a test she believes her girls are more than ready for. “The girls have to focus on keeping their confidence levels up and keeping their heads in the game. If they do that, and continue to play aggressively and communicate with one another, we have an excellent chance at winning.” The team had only a few short days to prepare for Matthews and Erixon focused on confidence building and serving. “We cannot play it safe when we are serving because we are allowing the other team to make an aggressive play,” she said. “We need to be confident with our serves again, and start zone serving again.” George Mason........... 25 25 15 28 9 Goochland................. 27 21 25 26 15 Records: George Mason n/r; Goochland 21-4
