Commission won’t support wind turbines Capturing wind for energy a long way off in Goochland County By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
If the Goochland Planning Commission has anything to say about it, the prospect of operating small wind turbines is not in the countys immediate future. The panel did not recommend approval of an ordinance change that would have allowed the updated windmills in some zoning districts. Most of the commissioners agreed the expanding technology would not be economically feasible for single-family-owned homes in the Goochland area. First of all, it came out at the meeting that the county’s elevation is not conducive to the high wind levels needed to generate power. And County Planner Tom Coleman said his office had not received any requests for a permit to construct one of the monopoles. The new ordinance would have allowed monopole structures up to 199 feet on private land in zoning districts A-1, A-2, F-C, M-1 and M-2. Conditional use permits would be

eowners through major retailers in the immediate future. Even the commissioners who supported the measure had questions regarding the proposed height of the towers and the minimum acreage required to construct a turbine. Other counties have allowed the units, but none have allowed the maximum heights suggested in the proposal. “We certainly wouldn’t want them in any subdivisions,” Commissioner Bill Neal said. He also said the conditional use process would still give the county rights of refusal for projects that did not meet the criteria. Lunsford moved for a denial of the recommendation and his co-members agreed. The measure moves forward to the Goochland County Board of Supervisors without the Planning Commission’s approval. In another matter, staff sought an ordinance change that would extend the period the Planning Commission has to act on a proposal from 60 to 70 days. That extra time would accommodate calendar irregularities that sometimes make it difficult for the panel to defer matters. Coleman said the ordinance change would “eliminate technical violations.” The Virginia State Code allows up to 100 days for the action, and some commissioners thought the panel should take advantage of the time allowed. Hyers urged her colleagues to consider extending the period to the maximum. “Why shouldn’t we go to the 100
days,” she said. “It doesn’t mean we have to take the 100 days, but should we not have the maximum in our ordinance consistent with what Virginia law permits.” Coleman reminded the panel that the Board of Supervisors sent the proposal forward with the 70-day extension. The panel moved for recommendation of the change as presented. Goochland Count y requested a conditional use permit allowing the construction of a communications tower adjacent to the Company 5 Firehouse in the courthouse area. The new tower would complement a regional communications system and enhance emergency communications in the county. Coleman said a community meeting was scheduled for later in the week to allow neighbors an opportunity to express their views on the project. Some commissioners found it unusual that planning staff had not scheduled a community meeting before the application was considered. “It seems to me the public meeting should have occurred before we met,” Neal said. “It’s not the right way to do things.” “We acknowledge this hasn’t been handled the way it usually is,” Coleman replied. “The public does have the opportunity to comment prior to final decision on the application.” A public hearing will be held when the Board of Supervisors considers the proposal at a future meeting.

Nutcracker coming to Goochland High School By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
Once again the Concert Ballet of Virginia will bring four full-length performances to Goochland High School this holiday season. Parent volunteer John Madeira said the performances will raise money for the GHS dance department. Twenty five percent of the general admission proceeds will go to the school. Last year’s performances drew a total of around 350 people, a number Madeira hopes will increase this year. “We’re hoping to build on last year’s attendance,” said Madeira, who said it’s essential to get the word out and make sure the community turns out for the performance, lest the company decide to perform elsewhere. Prices remain the same as last year, $24 for adults and $20 for seniors and children. The first performance will be Friday, December 3 at 7:30 p.m. A Saturday matinee at 2:30 will be followed by an evening performance at 7:30. Sunday ends the run with another 2:30
matinee. Gearing up for their annual holiday season, about 45 dancers along with countless adult volunteers arrived at Benedictine Abbey on River Road for a Sunday afternoon rehearsal last weekend. Artistic director Robert Watkins, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday, was on hand for the rehearsal. The auditorium was abuzz as the dancers and volunteers streamed in around one o’clock and began preparing for a stage rehearsal in the afternoon, to be followed by a dress rehearsal after a supper break. Dancers spent time fixing each other’s hair, while stage hands began working on the set. Madeira said the Goochland performances give county residents and those from all points south and west a chance to see a quality performance without traveling to Richmond, not to mention at a reasonable price. Five of his six children have performed over the years, making it a family affair. Madeira said the ballet had been good for his kids. “The arts help your children
develop socially,” he said. “You want your kids to be part of an organization that will help them blossom.” Concert Ballet that Director Scott Boyer also stressed the family nature of the Concert Ballet. “We had a recent performance where four generations were involved,” he said. Currently the company has a core group of dancers, many of whom have been with the ballet for four or five years, moving from minor roles to the more important ones as they matured and gained in skill. “That’s what’s unique about this company,” said Boyer. “We develop the performers’ skills to take on the big roles.” Family involvement is part of the culture of the Concert Ballet, as family members seem drawn into the effort. Regisseur Lindsay Rhyne recalled when her then six-yearold brother watched his first performance “It’s like magic he exclaimed,” recalled Rhyne. He joined up and performed with the company.

Boyer and Madeira also praised the contributions of the parent volunteers. “Parent commitment is extremely important. They have an opportunity to shine, not just to be the chauffeur for their children,” said Boyer.

As they waited for the rehearsal to begin, three young men from Hanover talked about how they got involved in the ballet. Cody Pace, who goes to Hanover High, said he was recruited by a friend on Facebook. Kurt Gray, who attends Atlee High School, said his little sister asked him to help out, and he then recruited his friend Matt Crosby too. “The younger kids are awe-
some, they get kind of attached to us,” said Gray. As things settled down, Boyer laid down the law for the company. “We are guests here, so remember to respect the building and other people’s property,” he said. And with that, the stage rehearsal began. For Nutcracker ticket information, call 804 798-0945 or visit the web site at www.concertballet. com.

The gift of gratitude This time of year when many of us, both in Goochland and far afield, hear “Thanksgiving,” we think of grocery lists, travel plans and the quick tick-down of the clock toward Christmas. This rushing of thoughts can leave little room for what the day is meant to celebrate: A true giving of thanks for all that we have. And sometimes, secretly, I wonder if doing so might be easier if there weren’t so many obligations involved! And I realize that beyond the handprint turkeys and the pilgrim motifs, I don’t really know much about the holiday itself. When, and why, did Thanksgiving begin to be celebrated in such an organized fashion? In nineteenth century American, a women’s magazine called Godey’s Lady’s Book was called a “Victorian Bible of the Parlor” and its editor, Sarah Josepha Hale, often preached the gospel of feminine domesticity. I studied Hale’s work extensively as a history major in college, and I was struck by how this woman’s conventional view (for the time) that women were responsible for the morality of society led to an unconventional stance: She became a vehement supporter of female education, and frequently appealed to politicians, patrons and universities to provide the kind of liberal arts education to women that men could already receive. As an editor Hale also transformed a simple woman’s magazine into one where writers such as Irving, Longfellow, Lowell, Holmes, Emerson, Bryant, Whittier and Richmond’s own Edgar Allen Poe became frequent contributors. And Hale successfully advocated for a national celebration of Thanksgiving, hoping that the holiday would serve to ease the divisions between the North and the South that could lead to a civil war. In 1858, Sarah Josepha Hale wrote in her Thanksgiving editorial: “Let us consecrate the day to benevolence of action, by sending good gifts to the poor, and doing those deeds of charity that will, for one day, make every American home the place of plenty and of rejoicing. These seasons of refreshing are of inestimable advantage to the popular heart; and if rightly managed, will greatly aid and strengthen public harmony of feeling. Let the people of all the States and Territories sit down together to the “feast of fat things,” and drink, in the sweet draught of joy and gratitude to the Divine giver of all our blessings, the pledge of renewed love to the Union, and to each other; and of peace and good-will to all men.” From Hale, I am inspired by her belief in the potential of people, in her advocacy for education and for writers, and by her understanding that it is when people are the most divided that they most need to gather together, to celebrate all that they have, before it is lost to them forever. So this week The Gazette hopes that all in Goochland take this opportunity to truly savor a day designed to bring us together, in good will and in good spirits! - Amy Condra

Celebrating our veterans My most heartfelt thanks regarding your great coverage of Medal of Honor recipient Colonel Van T. Barfoot’s appearance as Guest of Honor at the Goochland Veterans Day Ceremony, held for the first time at Goochland High School with student participation. The Gazette did itself and our area proud with this outstanding article as did GHS and Goochland School system leadership by choosing to provide a portion of our student body, our leaders of tomorrow, with likely the most important 30 minutes in their education they will ever experience. They were exposed as effectively as they ever shall be to the responsibilities of being an American and they meet face to face the real thing, an authentic hero. Colonel Barfoot is a national trea-
sure, one of only 85 living Model of Honor recipients, who not only served his country for nearly 36 years in uniform, but continued to serve with exceptional effectiveness following his active duty service. He was instrumental in the Commonwealth of Virginia’s establishment of The Virginia War Memorial and in the creation of SitterBarfoot Veterans Care Center, likely the finest such facility in the world, as is our McGuire VA Hospital. He also spent more than 30 years directly involved in Scouting. Today, he is an iconic example to us all of what it means to unselfishly serve others. After all, people are everything. It would be wonderful if in the future all of our GHS students had the opportunity to experience Veterans Day, up close and personal, as did nearly a third of the student body including the
magnificent GHS Band and the superb Jazz Chorus. Those GHS students who did attend demonstrated the most sincere and meaningful forms of respect and caring that they could have bestowed upon Colonel Barfoot and in so doing, brought tears to the eyes of many of the adults in attendance and made us all very, very proud of these fantastic young people. Colonel Barfoot was heard to exclaim following the event, that it was one of the finest days he’d experienced in a very long time. Just to have been there truly rivaled some of the finest moments I experienced during my 36 years as an active United States Marine. Semper Fidelis, Joe Wadle Manakin-Sabot

Cougar comeback intercepted in championship Collegiate falls to FUMA 16-14 in VIS title game BY DAVE LAWRENCE Special Correspondent
Three points was all Collegiate needed to win its seventh Virginia Independents Schools’ Division I football championship. With a dominating offensive effort in the second half of Saturday’s championship game, it looked like the home-standing Cougars should get them. Unfortunately for the Cougars, Fork Union Military Academy’s defense came up with drive-killing big plays in the fourth quarter which, when coupled with a safety in the first half, lifted the visiting Blue Devils a 16-14 victory. After falling behind 16-0 midway through the second quarter, the Cougars (6-5) slowly and steadily fought back, their offense hammering away at the Blue Devils’ defense in the second half. Collegiate ran 15 of the 21 plays from scrimmage in the third quarter and 16-of-22 plays from scrimmage in the fourth as the Cougars set foot on the threshold of victory. But Quadariis Newkirk’s interception of Collegiate quarterback Wilson Speight’s pass at the Fork Union goal line stopped the Cougars’ next-to-last drive. On the Cougars’ final drive of the fourth quarter, Andre Parker sacked Speight for a 10-yard loss that pushed Collegiate back to the Blue Devil 25 and out of field goal range to seal Collegiate’s defeat. “It all came down to the fact that today our kids played better defense in the crunch than theirs did,” said Fork Union coach Micky Sullivan. “We got a couple [touchdowns] early and were able to hold them down on the goal line a couple
minus 35 yards rushing, as the Cougars never let him cross the line of scrimmage on foot. Speight led Collegiate with 16 completions in 27 attempts for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Given Fork Union’s talent, Collegiate coach Mark Palyo knew his team had quite a battle on its hands, but that talent may have provided the winning edge. “Going into the game I challenged the team to outplay them,” Palyo said. “We knew we weren’t going to out-talent them. I think ultimately that was a big part of the game. … They made the plays ultimately and we did not.”

of times late. Qudariis’ interception and Andre’s sack … big players make big plays.” Fork Union’s first touchdown came on a big play. Sitting back on their 10-yard line, Blue Devil quarterback Christian Hackenberg hit running back Richie Dyer with a short screen pass. Dyer, seemingly trapped behind the line-of-scrimmage, eluded several tacklers before breaking through to the Collegiate defensive backfield and sprinting 90 yards to score. The Blue Devils’ defense added the next score. Collegiate began its second drive of the second quarter on the 6yard line. A vicious pass rush trapped Speight, who was in the shotgun, in the end zone. He tried throwing the ball away, but the officials ruled his effort intentional grounding and awarded Fork Union a safety. After the free kick, Fork Union (7-5) advanced to the
Collegiate 48 on a 14-yard pass from Hackenberg to Newkirk. Parker found a hole in the Cougars’ line and ran 48 yards for Fork Union’s final touchdown. Roach’s kick gave the Blue Devils a 16-0 lead. Despite the fact that Fork Union had beaten Collegiate 46-21 earlier this season, Sullivan did not think that drubbing gave the Blue Devils a psychological edge. “Their kids played their hearts out. They played their fannies off all day,” Sullivan said. “They put themselves in a position to win the ball game.” As if to prove Sullivan’s point, the Cougars demonstrated they weren’t going to concede by scoring on the drive after Fork Union’s final score. Collegiate drove from their 28 and scored on a 25-yard pass from Speight to Tyler Holly with 4:06 remaining in the half. The sustained effort foreshadowed what was to come. At the beginning of the
second half, the Cougars used 14 plays and seven minutes to drive from their 31 and score on an 11-yard pass from Speight to Lionel Williams. Their second drive, which began at the end of the third quarter, took 10 plays and about six minutes before ending in Newkirk’s goal-line interception. Their third and final drive lasted seven plays and nearly four minutes. Despite the fact that his defense was on the field for two-thirds of the second half, Sullivan wasn’t worried that they would wear out. “Not the way we were playing. We didn’t have any choice,” Sullivan said. “Offensively, we couldn’t execute. … We just had to play excellent defense, and that’s just what we did.” Most of Fork Union’s offense came in the first half. Hackenberg led the Blue Devils by completing 9-of-17 passes for 168 yards and one touchdown, but he also had

With about a minute left in the fourth quarter, the Tiger’s scored a touchdown and also completed their extra point making the game 7-6 Tiger’s. The Bulldogs got the ball back with about 19 seconds remaining on the clock, just enough time for one more play. While time was running out, a pitch was made to Kameron Holman, which resulted into an 80-yard touchdown run as time expired to give the Bulldogs a win. Great Job Bulldogs! Junior Bulldogs claim second consecutive Jefferson title Goochland JV football recovers from early season woes BY JIM RIDOLPHI Special Correspondent
The best journeys often begin with the rockiest of starts and the last horse out of the gate sometimes wins. That was certainly the case with this year’s Jefferson District Junior Varsity football champions, the Goochland Bulldogs. The junior Bulldogs opened the season with three losses, but fought back to claim the district title for the second season in a row. Following the rough start, it was gut check time for the team, and Coach Matt Singleton said the squad made a collective decision to move forward after the losses. “We were 1-4 after our first five,” Singleton said. “So things didn’t look good but the guys really pulled it together and made a decision to not dwell on the losses but use them as a learning experience so we could become district champions.” A key turning point in the season came with a disappointing 31-30 loss to Orange. The team used that motivation to turn the season around. “The guys really felt we let that game get away from us and we played the rest of the season for a chance to get a rematch against them,” Singleton said. The resulting effort earned the Bulldogs a title as they depart the Jefferson District for a return to a familiar spot in the James River District. “We really enjoyed our time in the Jefferson District but we are excited to be back in the James River district and are looking forward to getting a chance to play again against some of our old opponents,” Singleton said.

Goochland Junior Varsity quarterback Jordan Jefferson (16) had six touchdown passes on the season and three more on the ground. After starting the season 1-4, the Bulldogs turned things around to repeat at Jefferson District champions.
The championship was a true team effort, highlighted by some quality individual performances. Quarterback Jordan Jefferson rushed for three touchdowns and added six more through the air. Running back Mitchell Brice had more than 20 combined touchdowns, while Connor Saunders added another 12 through the air and on the ground. On defense, linebacker Scott Pearce led the team with 90 tackles, 42 of them for losses. Nathan Maddox had 65 tackles on the season in addition to his 10 touchdowns on offense. Singleton attributed the steady offensive output to the play of his offensive line. “The entire offensive line played excellent opening the running lanes,” he said. The coach said the performance of the JV bodes well for future of Goochland football. “Winning back to back JV championships should help
the program continue its success on the varsity level,” Singleton said. “These guys know the amount of hard work it takes to win a championship and having played in back to back championship games they know what is like
to play in a game with everything on the line.” The coach also said there’s no doubt that hard work and determination served this squad well as they struggled through early season woes to capture the title.
“The traits that made the difference for this team was their heart and drive,” he said. “These guys could have let the bad start get them down and they could have listened to all the critics and just given up on the year but instead they dug
deep and put in extra effort in order to prove that they had what it took to be a champion. It takes a lot of heart and drive to be willing to fight to overcome a very rocky start to wind up with back to back district championships.”

A diverse group of boys, 11-14 years of age, from Goochland Middle School started playing soccer together in August of 2010. Their goal was to play and enjoy the game of soccer. As a middle school group they overcame the various skill levels and played together as a team. The team played above their age group in many of the games. The schedule included either public or private school teams with players ranging up to 16 years old. The team achieved a winning season with a 7-3 record. One of the season’s many highlights included an outstanding 10-1 win over Buckingham, where even some defensive players scored goals. Many will play soccer again with a different group of athletes and in the future will become part of another team either in sports, business, or other endeavors. We wish all 25 members the best in school, sports and life. Congratulations. Submitted by Tom Reid

ACT NOW volunteers help prevent crime Contributed Report Holiday shoppers at four Henrico shopping malls soon will be under the watchful eyes of ACT NOW volunteers. ACT NOW, Awareness of Crime Today-Neighbors on Watch, is an award winning, crime prevention program designed to increase awareness of holiday crime prevention and shopping safety. This crime prevention program is a partnership between Henrico County Neighborhood Watch, the
Division of Police, Division of Police volunteers, and area shopping malls. The ACT NOW program will begin Saturday, November 27th and continue every Friday and Saturday night until December 18th from 6 to 9 p.m. Volunteers will be staffing ACT-NOW activities at: Short Pump Towne Center and Willow Lawn. ACT NOW volunteers, dressed in maroon vests and equipped with cell phones, patrol participating Henrico County mall parking lots and
shopping areas. The volunteers provide the Division of Police with additional support during the busy holiday shopping season to report suspicious activity and ward off criminals. ACT NOW volunteers also enhance the relationships between the Division of Police, Neighborhood Watch, area malls, and their customers by acting as ambassadors for the Division of Police. In addition to heightening awareness of holiday crime prevention, ACT
NOW volunteers facilitate interest in Henrico County’s Neighborhood Watch program and distribute holiday safety flyers and information regarding other Division of Police crime prevention programs. For more information about ACT NOW or to schedule a free crime prevention program, call Henrico County Division of Police Community Policing Section at (804) 501-4838 or visit their web site at www.henricopolice.org.
