The Virginia Department of Forestry is currently seeking 12 species of acorns and nuts that can be planted at its Augusta Forestry Center to grow into tree seedlings that will become the forests of tomorrow. During September and early October, it is easy to pick up nuts in many yards and parking lots. The following guidelines, however, should be followed whenever possible: Try to stay away from trees in the forest because there may be different species of trees nearby and the nuts

need to be sorted by species for proper planting. Place the nuts in a breathable sack or bag (no plastic). Try to keep as much trash (sticks, leaves, gravel) out as possible. It doesn’t matter if acorns still have the caps on them or not. On the bag, label the species and date of collection. Once the nuts are collected, place in a cool area until you are ready to drop them off at a VDOF office. Nuts must be delivered to a VDOF office by Oct. 17. The species the tree nursery needs this year include

black oak, black walnut, Chinese chestnut, chestnut oak, Northern red oak, pin oak, sawtooth oak, Southern red oak, swamp chestnut oak, swamp white oak, white oak and willow oak. “Donating acorns and nuts to the VDOF nursery is fast and easy, but the tremendous appreciation we have for those who do is long lasting,” said nursery Forester Joshua McLaughlin. For more information, or for help identifying trees, call McLaughlin at the Augusta Forestry Center at (540) 3637000.

Lifetime dog licensing begins Nov. 1 Contributed report Earlier this year, the Goochland Board of Supervisors voted to begin issuing Lifetime Dog Licenses for individual dogs, beginning with 2019 tags. These tags will be available on Nov. 1. The due date for obtaining a new dog license is Jan. 31. The Department of Animal Protection is responsible for enforcing the licensing. The new tags will be sold through the Treasurer’s Office as usual. Current pet owners who have purchased licenses will receive a bill from the Treasurer in late October. Owners who do not receive bills should contact the Treasurer’s Office before the January 31 due date. The Lifetime Dog License eliminates the need for citizens to re-register the same dog every year. Once purchased,

the Lifetime Dog License remains valid so long as the dog’s rabies vaccination is current, and the dog and owner live in Goochland County. Accordingly, the purchase of a Lifetime Dog License will result in a cost and time savings to most citizens because they will no longer have to purchase a new dog license every year. Cost of the tags will be $10. The Lifetime Dog License is only valid for the dog for whom it was issued. The Lifetime Dog Licenses apply only to single dogs. There is no reduced cost for neutered or spayed animals. There is no change in multi-dog licensing. Multi-dog licenses of 20 for $25 and 50 for $50 must still be purchased annually. If a Lifetime Dog License becomes invalid, because a dog’s rabies vaccination expires, owners must provide a

current rabies certificate to the Treasurer’s Office to re-validate the Lifetime Dog License. Veterinarians notify local Treasurers when the vaccinations have been administered and the license remains valid. Failure to maintain a current rabies vaccination for your dog could result in a fine in addition to the expiration of the Lifetime Dog License. Licenses may not be transferred. Moving to another jurisdiction or the premature death of a dog will not be grounds for a refund. For more information, check the Goochland County website at www.goochlandva. us . Dog Licensing appears under both the Animal Protection and Treasurer’s pages. Citizens may also call Animal Protection at 556-5302 or the Treasurer’s office at 5565806.

Safety continued from > 1 division has made a number of advances in recent months, including adding three new full-time school counselors at Goochland High School and two at the middle school, and adding a school security officer to help provide “another set of eyes and ears” at both locations. Two full-time school resource officers “have also been a very strong addition for us,” Raley said. When it comes to the security of the building itself, Raley said the administration has completed installation of new key card and “door ajar” sensors at the high school and middle school, and said work on such measures is underway at the county’s three elementary schools as well. Work is currently continuing to install cameras at the elementary schools as well and is expected to be com-

pleted in 2019. While there were some non-visible security improvements that Raley declined to make public for security reasons, one he detailed will likely be immediately apparent to Goochland High School students and their parents: the small, whiteframed window located in the entranceway and offering a view into the main office will soon be converted into a sliding, pass-through window. The opening, which will be outfitted with security glass, will allow those visiting the school to conduct almost all transactions — from signing students in and out to dropping off lunch boxes or instruments — without actually entering the main school building. “It’s going to be allow us to do a lot of business without having a lot of traffic coming into our schools,” Raley said, which will help keep the building far more secure.

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County Second Union continued from >1 B. Morris, Jr., a direct descendant of both venerated orator Frederick Douglass and famed educator Booker T. Washington. Morris will speak at a banquet scheduled for Sunday. As vital a role as the building played in the lives of those who were educated there, however, some may still not know the history behind it. It was there, in the unimposing, tidy building set in the parking lot of Second Union Baptist Church on HadensvilleFife Road, that a number of local black residents received the education that would serve as the foundation for their adult lives. One of a handful of surviving Rosenwald Schools, Second Union’s Rosenwald School was the result of a partnership between philanthropist Julius Rosenwald and famed educator Booker T. Washington in the early part of the twentieth

century. According to published reports, Rosenwald, who had made his fortune as a supplier for and eventual head of Sears, Roebuck and Company, had long harbored personal concerns about the social and economic hardships suffered by black Americans. After being urged by Washington, a former slave who would go on to lead the Tuskegee Institute, to consider helping improve the educational opportunities available to black students across the southern United States, Rosenwald would turn his focus toward the construction of nearly 5,000 small school buildings to be used by black communities. These state-of-the-art buildings, created from plans drafted by Tuskegee professors, were typically built on land donated by black residents, who also raised money to help in their construction. Per Rosenwald’s plan, local white school boards were required to provide funds

for continued maintenance. The building is now a museum, maintained by the nonprofit Second Union Rosenwald School Museum, Inc., and is focused on educating current and future generations To Morris, whose greatgreat-grandfather Booker T. Washington penned the autobiography “Up From Slavery,” which is said to have inspired Julius Rosenwald’s efforts on behalf of black Americans, knowing what the schools meant to so many has been deeply moving. “To know some of the people who came out of these Rosenwald schools, people who have given so much to our culture — it’s very humbling,” Morris said Tuesday. These days, Morris continues his ancestors’ legacy of antislavery and educational work as co-founder and president of the Atlanta-based Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives, and nonprofit focused in part on combating human trafficking.

SHOBE Julian “Shorty” McBee Shobe, 93, of Mechanicsville, died peacefully at his home and went to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ our Lord, on Saturday, September 22, 2018. Julian was born in Richmond on Aug. 29, 1925, the youngest of three boys, to the late Walter Gordon Shobe Sr. and Hester

Lucille Kane Shobe. He grew up on Church Hill and attended St. Patrick Catholic School, where he made lifelong friends. He met the love of his life, Kitty, when she was 17 and he was 21, having just returned from his service during WWII. SHOBE They met when she walked into a small neighborhood store on Church Hill and he told her, “One day I’m going to marry you,” and she was in his life forever from that point forward. Julian served his country as a Marine Corporal in the U.S. 5th Marine Division, 26th Regiment, 1st Battalion, C Company, and he bravely fought on Iwo Jima in February 1946, witnessing the victorious American flag being raised on Mt. Suribachi. After the Marines conquered Iwo Jima, Julian was one of only six in his company of 240 men who came home physically unharmed. He spoke very little about that time and had no use for fireworks...saying he had seen enough fireworks for a lifetime. After the war, Julian became a Union bricklayer in Richmond Local #1, working for more than 50 years as a master craftsman at his beloved bricklaying art. He also loved his river home at South Hill Banks on the Rappahannock River and all the fellowship with neighbors there. But most of all, his number one love and devotion was for Kitty, along with his children and family, being a loving and devoted son, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He never met a stranger and everyone who met him loved him with his gentle, positive, easy-going manner, never gossiping and never, ever

complaining about anything whatsoever. Julian was a keen listener with a very quick wit, an artist and upon retiring, he journaled daily for more than 20 years. Julian was preceded in death on Jan. 7, 2010, by his dear wife of 62 years, Cathleen “Kitty” Matthews Shobe; his granddaughter, Ann Marie Shobe; and his two brothers, Walter Gordon Shobe Jr. and Thomas Henry Shobe. He is survived by his son, Danny Shobe (Dianna) of Center Cross; daughter, Sue Shobe Zimmerman (Keith) of Goochland; and son, Patrick Shobe (Linda) of Aylett; eight grandchildren, Matthew Shobe, Jessica Zimmerman, Keith Zimmerman Jr. (currently serving in Afghanistan), Tiffany Shobe, Ryan Shobe, Amanda Mackintosh, Crystal Cavedo, William Cavedo Jr. and their children; three great-granddaughters, Alonna, Hailey and Abigail; and several nieces and nephews. The family received friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on September 26 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, Va. 23231. The funeral was held on Sept. 27, at Sandston Baptist Church in Sandston. Interment followed at Washington Memorial Park in Sandston. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico. MARION STOKES Marion Bruce Jeffries Stokes, of Richmond, died on Sunday, September 23, 2018. She was born Oct. 13, 1923 in Richmond, the daughter of Rober t Semple Jeffries and Marion B r u c e D a n i e l STOKES Jeffries.

She lived in Westhampton where her father, a building contractor, built houses near St. Christopher’s School. Her family moved to Lookout Mountain, Tennessee in 1927, where her father started a business to build exact copies of historic homes for people in the Chattanooga area. The business failed during the Depression and she spent her childhood in several other southern cities. In 1941, she graduated first in her class from Jefferson High School in Roanoke. In 1945, she received her Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Mathematics at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. After teaching mathematics briefly in Bedford County and at Blackstone College for Women, she entered the graduate program at the University of Virginia in the Department of Mathematics. In August, 1950, she received her Master of Arts in Mathematics doing her original research in the field of combi-matorial topology. In September, 1950, she joined the faculty in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Richmond, where she taught full-time until she retired in 1994. She attained the rank of Professor of Mathematics and was Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science from 1992 to 1994. In 1986, she received one of the University’s Distinguished Educator awards. As recently as a couple of months before her death, former students who saw her would come up to tell her what a wonderful math teacher she was. In addition to her teaching duties, she was active in campus life serving on numerous committees covering all areas of the University, but primarily those that focused on stusee Obituaries > 16

More than ever, young women need role models A simple By Roslyn Ryan Editor

I

’m not exactly sure when it happened — it would seem that only a very odd person would keep a record of such things — but at some point over the last 10 years I began to have the sense that I might want to try and actually attempt to set a good example for the next generation of young women coming up behind me. Mind you, I’m not saying this required a full life overhaul — it’s not like I was doing anything crazy, or dangerous, or had found a spot on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. But I did begin to get the sense that, when it came to the young female interns at the paper where I worked, or the teens I met when covering high school events, I should probably

do my best to model the attributes and behaviors that an upstanding, professional, modern woman should possess: work hard, don’t whine, stick up for yourself, and don’t allow other people to devalue you or your work. I had always been tremendously fortunate to have wonderful female role models of my own, I figured, so it only made sense that I would try to pass on what they had taken pains to demonstrate to me. None of this is earth-shattering or even groundbreaking, but in recent months, as the discussion around the abuses some women have suffered (#MeToo) has heated to a near-raging boil, it has started to feel more critical than ever that girls be given the tools and examples they need to make their way in the world.

Here’s the thing: when it comes to the vast majority of young women I’ve been fortunate enough to work with or speak to, they usually seem to be leading rather than following. Time and time again, I have been impressed beyond measure with the poise, grace and determination I have seen from this new generation, a group of women who likely can’t fathom a time when doors to fields like medicine or engineering were not open to them, or they shouldn’t have the same freedoms and opportunities afforded as their male peers. If a young woman growing up anywhere in this country today does not understand that the types of behaviors that spawned the #MeToo movement were wrong, we have failed her. To the extent that those behaviors are still hap-

pening, and that victims are scared to report them, we still have much work to do. I hope that at some point in the future — even if it is not in my lifetime — the idea of having to champion “Women’s Rights” seems strange to young adults, because there will no longer be a need to do so (women, after all, are people, right? So simply championing human rights will cover it). Until then, let’s keep reminding all young people — and particularly young girls — that they matter, and they are valued, and that they should hold themselves to the highest standard possible and never let anyone else tell them how far they can go. In honor of the women who blazed the trail for us, it’s the least we can do.

rowing up in the country offered an array of benefits, but, the truth be known, as a young child who had just moved to Rockville I was unable to see much of anything

good or beneficial about it. It was way too far out in the sticks, it was way too quiet, and there wasn’t anything to do. As I grew, I began to love so much of what I had disliked in my early years, the tranquil peace and quiet, the uninhabited solitude, and the beauty of nature.

Still today I love the sounds of the cricket-frogs at night singing me to sleep and the lonesome sounds of the whippoorwill echoing in the distance. One sound I was never fond of however were the sirens of the emergency vehicles as they made their way down our country road. To this day, when I hear one

I still feel the need to check on my Mom, even though she has been enjoying Heaven for several years now. I remember the first time we had to call 911 for my Mom like it was yesterday. I don’t think there see Henley > 11

walk offers remarkable message By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

It’s one of the most anticipated moments at any football game — that minute that a team gathers behind a banner ready to explode through the wall of paper and take the field. It’s no different at home games at Goochland High School. Even from a distance you can feel the energy as the team begins to chant and a quiet murmur becomes a roar shortly before they shred the banner in unison and charge the field. It’s a message a team displays that exudes confidence and courage and sends a clear message to the opposing team that the Bulldogs are ready to defend their turf, unafraid of the pending challenge and confident they will emerge victorious. Needless to say, standing anywhere in front of that banner during this process is not advised. The banner break sets the tone and fires up the crowd, and has become part of an important routine at GHS. Once each season the procedure takes on another tone as coaches across the nation join hands to fight a disease that robs young men of their chance to run through that banner or play other sports. In an effort to fight Muscular Dystrophy, the Parents Project for Muscular Dystrophy teams with the American Football Coaches Association to sponsor Coach to Cure, a recognition of those who suffer with MD and the need for more research and hopefully a cure for the terminal disease. see Walk > page 14

Bulldogs score on offense, defense in 21-8 win By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

When the Buckingham Knights arrived in Goochland on Sept. 28 for a James River District matchup, the team had one thing on its mind — pound the ball. “The game really wasn’t any different from what we

thought it would be,” head coach Alex Fruth said after the game. “We knew they were going to be super physical. We knew they were going to come out on offense and try to control the clock, shorten the game.” “They did a great job at that,” he added. But, the home standing

Bulldogs didn’t waver from their game plan and executed on both offense and defense in a 21-8 win. The Knights made their intentions perfectly clear as they took the opening kickoff and mounted an eight-minute drive that ate the majority of the first quarter. Problem was, the drive

resulted in no points. Goochland’s defensive line may have allowed the Knights a number of plays, but the yardage didn’t mount up. Early in the second quarter, defensive back Kindrick Braxton picked up an errant pitch and raced 28 yards to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. “This was one of those

games when you don’t get a lot of opportunities so you have to a good job seizing those opportunities when you get them,” Fruth said. On the Bulldogs ensuing drive, Conner Popielarz found a hole in the middle of the Knights line and rumbled 25 yards, providing the home team a 14-0 advantage as the

teams broke for the half. Raheem Wilson provided the spark for a third quarter score when he blocked a Knight punt, setting up the Bulldogs in Buckingham territory. Quarterback Devin McCray found Chase Smith see Bulldogs>8

Honesty is the best policy for Goochland’s Pollard By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Goochland freshman golf phenom Cole Pollard had a moment after winning the Class 2 regional on Sept. 24 at Kinderton Country Club that no athlete wants to be in. There was a mistake. Pollard had shot a 39 on the front nine of the tournament, but greatly improved his score on the back nine, where he shot a 34. “It was fun,” he said. “I went into (the region tournament) with a lot of confidence. In my mind, I was telling myself I was going to win and I really believed that. After the front nine, I wasn’t playing well, but I turned it around on the back nine.” Pollard and his playing partner had two different scores listed for the sixth hole of the course. His partner had a six written down and Pollard had a five. While comparing scores, Pollard and his partner discussed the problem and his partner described the wrong hole when describing the sixth. “We mixed up one of the holes,” Pollard said. “I had down a bogey and he had down a par. He told me that hole was a hole that went straight downhill. I was think-

Bulldogs continued from >7 with a 17-yard scoring strike that made the score 21-0 in the third quarter. Buckingham finally answered on the ensuing kickoff, when Lashawn Bartee took the ball and sprinted

ing to myself ‘oh yeah, I parred that one.’ We got the holes mixed up.” So, Pollard changed his card so both cards matched, signed it and turned it in. When the scores were tabulated, Pollard was crowned the champion of the region with a 73 and clinched his berth in the Class 2 state tournament. But, when Pollard realized his mistake, he immediately knew he had to disclose the mistake. “I knew that I had to go tell the tournament director,” Pollard said. “It was the right thing to do and I like to play by the rules. There was a little hesitation since I wouldn’t be able to go to states and I was confident that I would have won states. But, I knew that I had to do the right thing.” Score-wise, Pollard would have still won the tournament with a 74. But, having the incorrect score down disqualified Pollard’s title and ended his chance to win a state title in 2018. Pollard was the James River District champion in his freshman season and was a standout on the Bulldogs squad this season, averaging 73 this season. He got off to a good start,

but had some trouble in the middle of the year where he said he wasn’t playing well. “I kind of lost my swing,” he said. “I met with my coach and we worked on it. Then, I started playing better.” Pollard entered his first high school season after a successful summer in the Virginia State Golf Association tournament, where he finished just one stroke behind champion Charlie Kennedy, who won the Class 5 state championship last season. He said that he enjoyed his first year of high school golf. “I think it made golf a lot less serious,” he said of the high school game. “It was serious at the same time, but a lot more fun. I made some new friends. I had a really fun time.” While the high school season is over for Pollard, he said he still has plenty of golf on his schedule. “I have a couple (tournaments) in the fall, winter and of course the spring and summer,” he said. “It’s basically all year round.” Pollard said that his father introduced him to the sport when Pollard was around 5 years old, but he also tried his hand at other sports. It wasn’t until his family moved to a home on the golf

95 yards for a touchdown. Following a successful two point conversion, the Knights trailed 21-8. Goochland’s defense ended the Knights’ final drive with a fourth down stop, and the offense controlled the ball for the final seven minutes of the quarter to record a 21-8 victory. When the gun sounded,

two things were crystal clear. Buckingham is a quickly improving team and the Bulldogs defensive line is an evolving force to be reckoned with. The game against the Knights was the first game Goochland had played since Sept. 12 against Nottoway. Goochland was on its bye week on Sept. 21.

Goochland freshman golfer Cole Pollard, seen here earlier this season at practice, reported a mistake on his scorecard which ended up disqualifying him from the region title he had won.

course at Hermitage Country Club that he really started taking golf seriously. “That’s when I started thinking I had a future in the sport,” he said. Pollard said he has some

lofty expectations for that future. “My goal right now is to play Division I,” he said. “I don’t know if I want to do anything golf-related after college. But, I definitely want to

play Division I golf.” That goal might not be too far out of reach if Pollard’s actions on, and especially off the course, continue the way that he’s shown in his short Goochland career.

While the Nottoway game was moved up two days due to the forecast of Hurricane Florence, it extended Goochland’s time off from full-speed football action, which can be a double-edged sword. It allows players the time to heal and relax, but can get teams out of sync on the field. Fruth said the next two

games will allow the Bulldogs to get back in a rhythm and smooth out the rough edges, and acknowledged the over two week layoff wasn’t helpful. “The 16 or 17 days since our last game showed and we are not polished right now,” the coach said. The win over Buckingham improved Goochland’s

record to 5-0 this season. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 12 in the NBC12/RVA Sports Network Big 12 poll. The next-closest James River District team in the standings is Amelia, which is 4-0. The Bulldogs hit the road for a matchup with Cumberland on Oct. 5. Game time is 7 p.m.

Henley continued from > 6 was ever a time prior to that moment when I felt a flood of so many emotions: an overwhelming sense of helplessness and an enormous amount of fear and concern. One minute she was fine, the next she wasn’t. Her eyes wide open and yet no response whatsoever. Almost two years later, and after too many tests to count, we would learn that her condition was heart-related. While we were grateful to finally know what was causing the problem, that knowl-

edge did very little in helping us to cope with the numerous “episodes” that would follow. Those are moments in my life that I try not to think about too much, as still to this day they unearth very bad memories. During a conversation with a friend recently, we were talking about my mom and somehow got on the very subject of her “episodes.” She remarked how difficult it must have been never knowing when it would happen, never having any warning whatsoever. As we continued talking, I shared more about those moments,

how horrible they were, that there was so much uncertainty, so much fear, and still that overwhelming feeling of being helpless to do anything, other than pray and wait for the emergency workers to arrive. As we talked more, I continued remembering more and more about those difficult moments. It amazed me that some of the very situations we try so hard to forget, remain etched so clearly within our minds and come flooding back in an instant. It was in that moment that I shared something with her that I had never really told

anyone before: every time my mom got sick, one person always came. It did not matter if he was on call or not, it did not matter the time of day or night, he would just be there. As I continued sharing, the tears began streaming down my face as though a faucet had been turned on. I remembered those moments still being so frightening, and yet as soon as this man walked through the door, there was a sense of calm, as though God had sent us our very own angel to help in this moment of great need. During times of indisputable

trouble, this man came time and time again to offer help, to offer support, to do whatever he could for my mom and for our family. Wow! Despite all of the turmoil surrounding those moments, God had given me an extraordinary memory. Something amazing to remember amidst the chaos of those storms. There aren’t words to begin to express how completely grateful I am to Rockville Fire volunteer Mr. Buck Henley for being that angel in those very difficult moments. The compassion that he shared, the kindness, the care, all of

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County

Drug ‘Take Back’ set for Oct. 27 Contributed report

On Oct. 27, the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its 16th opportunity in nine years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Residents are encour-

aged to bring their pills for disposal between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to Co. 5 Fire/Rescue at 2710 Fairground Rd. Goochland, or West Creek Emergency Center at 12720 Tuckahoe Creek Parkway in Henrico. The DEA cannot accept liquids, needles, or sharps, only pills or patches. The service is free and anonymous, and no questions will

be asked. In April 2018, national Take Back event efforts netted 949,046 pounds (approximately 474.5 tons) of collected medications. For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs, or about the Oct. 27 Take Back Day, go to the DEA Diversion website or contact the Sheriff’s Office at (804) 556-5349.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Letters to the Editor All are welcome to celebrate Hebron Presbyterian’s 175th anniversary Dear Editor, After 175 years, country ham biscuits, casseroles, sweet iced tea, and welcoming hands are not the only legacies of Hebron Presbyterian Church on Shallow Well Road. Nor is it our community Christmas tree-lighting and carol service followed by warm Krispy Kreme doughnuts and hot chocolate—though that evening is one of the most heartwarming and inspiring nights of the Advent season. Nor is it that we have deep roots in Goochland County beginning when we first formed as Dover Presbyterian Church at Manakin-Sabot. No, our heritage is grounded in nearly two centuries of Christian service and witness that we invite all to discover and help celebrate with us on Friday, Oct. 19 and Sunday,

Walk continued from > 6 For years, my son has participated in Goochland s observation of the event, spending time with the team in the week leading up to the game, serving as honorary captain for the game, and, most importantly, taking the field with players he considers teammates. As a parent, I rarely hand off Jack to anyone because I’m probably too overprotective of his condition, always considering what could happen or what obstacles are in his way. Last week, Jack headed to Goochland for another Coach to Cure game, an event

Oct.21. Our beginning in 1843 (well before the Civil War) was humble. We met in members’ homes until we could collect enough money to purchase land for a building. The mortgage payment of $25 per year was daunting; and so, not surprisingly for a growing church, we shared ministers with Byrd Presbyterian for 65 years. Mrs. R. W. Bendall donated land for a cemetery in 1928; the Reed family donated 2.25 acres for future growth. Among the ministers of this church, Rev. Ben Lacy Rose won wide recognition for his thoughtful, compelling sermons. During his tenure a fellowship hall and education building were constructed in 1989. Our current Minister, Connie Weaver, is assisted by Director of Christian Education Lori Alford and Director of Music Markus Compton. Young families will want

to learn about our day school that helps pre-school children become prepared for school and grounded for life. If you are a family who has teens, you’ll be moved by our amazing youth group that volunteers time on mission trips, helps with Vacation Bible School, takes on household projects to help the elderly— and has a loving, humorous time going to movies, pool parties, and sporting events together. You may want to seek us as a way to engage with us in work with Goochland Cares, Habitat for Humanity, Alcoholics Anonymous, Brown Bag Ministry (feeding Goochland school children), or the ministry at the women’s prison. You may want to hone your musical skills and deepen your spiritual life by joining our sanctuary choir and feeling how music specially honors God and nourishes the spirit.

Join us on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. for a concert and reception celebrating the dedicated people who have gone before us and who planted the seeds that have made Goochland the good community it is today. On Sunday, Oct. 21, come at 10 a.m. for a service of looking forward to how this church can nurture this burgeoning area by demonstrating God’s forgiveness, grace, and love for us all. Then do stay as our guests at 11:30 a.m. for one of our famous luncheons of delicious casseroles, fluffy ham biscuits, and — yes — thirstquenching iced tea. You may find a home here with welcoming hearts that seek to help you find your way. Anyone wishing to send memories to share during this celebration should visit www. hebronpresbyterian.com or call (804) 784-4018.

started by former GHS coach Joe Fowler. As soon as Fowler learned of Jack’s diagnosis eight years ago, he began organizing this annual effort to raise awareness and money to fight Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. He also recognized that Jack had an important message for his players: a lesson of love, determination, overcoming obstacles and remaining positive in the face of what seem like insurmountable odds. New coach Alex Fruth knows Jack from his former days on the Bulldog sideline, and welcomed the chance to continue the tradition. As we prepared for pregame ceremonies last week,

I waited to deliver Jack to his assigned position with the team as they prepared to take the field. One of Jack’s teammates walked up to me and said, “Don’t worry about Jack, I’ll take care of him.” That seemingly small number of words spoke volumes about a team that displays much more than an off-the-chart ability to win football games. They protect and care for Jack as if he’s one of them. They love him because he is one of them. So, I had no worries as I heard that familiar rumble that came from behind the banner as the team began its normal procedure. And, finally, when the time

to bust out finally arrived, the banner split and a determined group of young men walked with a sense of determination through the shredded paper. They surrounded Jack and strode at his speed onto the field, a show of unity and determination against a disease that they understand, but do not fear. The lack of the usual stampede that follows the banner break spoke volumes about the commitment and compassion of a group of young athletes and a coaching staff that understands the realities that life can deliver. For Jack, the message means he’s not alone in a battle that can become lonely and isolated. More importantly, Jack feels a sense of

Christmas Mother program is seeking local volunteers to register applicants

Dear Editor, Many Goochland residents have registered applicants for the Goochland County Christmas Mother gift and grocery program in past years, and we thank them for your dedicated service to this organization and to the citizens we serve. For those who have never taken applications before, we would welcome you as a new Registrar. Registration is the single most important task that we undertake because it is the beginning of the entire process, and when we get it right, the progression from vetting to gift buying to wrapping and distribution runs smoothly. Last year, the Social Service Sincerely, reviewers said that the applicaNancy Parrish tions were the most complete Goochland and most accurate of any pre-

safety and security when he’s with the team. Since its inception 11 years ago, Coach to Cure has raised more than $2 million, most of it dedicated to research and development of drugs that can treat or cure muscle disease. For the past eight of those years, Goochland coaches, players, fans and Jack have celebrated those efforts with a Coach to Cure game. That means hundreds of Goochland players have entered their adult lives with a clear understanding and personal knowledge of the challenges faced by the disabled community, and Jack and his family hold each of them in a special place in our hearts.

vious years. We believe that is because almost all of our registrars attended a training and review session. We are asking again that you participate in a brief review session to ensure the quality of the registrations. We will introduce you to an additional form as well as an added statement on the registration document. Please plan to attend a Registration Review and Training Session on one of the following dates: Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018 at 2:30 p.m., or Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018 at 5 p.m. These sessions will be held at the Goochland Public Library meeting room, and we strive to keep the meetings around 45 minutes or less. Thank you, Cindie Valentine, President Christmas Mother Association Meta Potts, Registration Coordinator Christmas Mother Association

When the Bulldogs return home for their next game, that run through the banner will return to its traditional flavor, filled with enthusiasm and frenzy. With each of those thundering steps, I’ll be remembering a night when a simple walk delivered a strong message of unity, understanding and compassion by a group of young men who get it. I won’t forget it. And words cannot express my thanks and appreciation for the Goochland community and the compassion and love they’ve shown regarding Jack and his condition. It’s not too late to support this year’s effort by visiting PPMD’s website, parentsprojectmd.org.
