It is perhaps one of every driver’s worst nightmares: you’re in an accident, and suddenly realize that you’ve made contact with a power pole. Even worse, the lines have come down and are near—or even on—your vehicle. According to Goochland County Fire-Rescue Chief Bill MacKay, the best course of action in this situation is almost always to remain in the vehicle. “Unless the vehicle is on fire, stay in the vehicle,” MacKay Contributed photos

Special delivery Dianna Gordon recently delivered four bags full of children’s books to Byrd Elementary School teacher, Jamie Beatty (in Halloween hat). The books are a donation from the GFWC Goochland Woman’s Club for Byrd’s R.E.A.D. program this school year.

Schools continued from >1 tors for academic achievement, achievement gaps, and student engagement and outcomes. According to recent information provided by the school division, Goochland County Public Schools (GCPS) exceeded the state average for student performance in math, science, and reading, and students with disabilities and black students met or exceeded the state average in the same content areas. The division also exceeded the state average for kindergarten students meeting literacy benchmarks. This represents more than a decade in which all GCPS schools have been accredited at the highest level designated the Virginia Department of Education, a distinction shared with only a handful of Virginia school divisions. “The new accreditation

ratings validate our work to go further than overall ratings and to identify and improve outcomes for all of our students, said GCPS superintendent Jeremy Raley. “The work of our teachers and staff has distinguished us in the Commonwealth and beyond, and we will continue to identify the areas where we can still improve and maximize the potential of every learner in Goochland County Public Schools. Highlights from the division’s Spring 2018 SOL results include: Goochland students outperformed the Virginia state average in SOL pass percentage in all four core academic areas: reading, math, social studies, and science Goochland’s reading scores ranked thirteenth in the state out of the 132 school divisions in the Commonwealth and second in the region

Goochland’s math scores also ranked thirteenth in the state and first in the region Dr. Stephen Geyer, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction, described Goochland’s focus on a balanced approach to instruction and assessment as a key to the division’s success. “Every child’s learning is important, and that requires our instructional program to be balanced, Geyer said. “Students need direct instruction. They also need opportunities to explore what interests them. Students need to work collaboratively with their peers. They also need opportunities to demonstrate their learning independently. It’s this kind of balance across our entire division that prepares our students for success. Even more important, we have the most talented, caring teachers anywhere — and it’s their dedication that makes our school community shine.

 Karen R. Horn Candidate Karen’s message to the citizens of Goochland County District 3: Thank you for the warm greetings I received while campaigning. Independent, strong, creative, and resourceful are a few of the words I use to describe Goochlanders. The decision my husband and I made in the late 90’s to build our forever home in Goochland County was reaffirmed at every doorstep. I am proud of all my accomplishments in Education. I cannot imagine another profession where I could teach children and families, work with other caring adults, mentor new teachers, recruit new talent, share my creative ideas, and collaborate across the state to provide even more opportunities for learning. From parent to teacher to VDOE specialist to school division Director of HR, I expanded my service through the knowledge of the legal aspects of education and ever-changing policies of the VDOE. Working within the confines of a budget required the discipline of setting priorities with a division leadership team. Past, present and future decisions for students and school employees were and will continue to be challenging. No single decision makes everyone happy which is why knowledge of legal aspects, instruction, school policies and finance is vital. Educators and administrators observe, evaluate, investigate, research, and act with the success and safety of each child as our priority. Educators work to unlock the potential of every student while taking care of their own families with the salaries and benefits of a public service employee. I love every day of this life. I love the hard work. I am so appreciative of the opportunity to continue this important work in my chosen community of Goochland County. If elected November 6, I will be honored to serve you all as a School Board Member. I send a special thank you to the many supporters who posted one of my yard signs and helped spread the word about my candidacy. I listened to you – the citizens – and your often-passionate thoughts and experiences. Conversations with administrators and real actions will verify that you were heard. We share a passion for quality education in Goochland County. Karen R. Horn will be:

As anger consumes us, a change is needed By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Like most people these days, I’ve come to rely on my phone for all kinds of answers, from driving directions to the name of that actor who was in that movie I saw 10 years ago and can’t remember the exact title of. You know, important stuff. The other day, however, I asked my phone a very different kind of question, just to see what it would say. “Siri,” I asked, “why on Earth are so many people so angry these days?” It’s something I’ve been think-

ing about a lot lately for various reasons, but it was jolted to the front of my mind last Wednesday as news broke of the explosive devices that had been sent to various politicians, including the Clintons and the Obamas. It was the same week I saw a viral clip of a woman berating two Hispanic women in a store for not speaking English, and read a breathlessly reported piece – since widely discredited — that claimed George Soros was funding a caravan of desperate migrants headed for the United States border. Last week, I watched in dismay as the comments on a story about finding ways to get fresh, healthy

food into the inner city “food deserts” devolved into a petty, nasty vitriolic mess. I asked my phone that exasperated question before last Saturday, when a gunman filled with rage attacked worshippers in a synagogue in Pittsburgh, taking 11 innocent lives in what appears to be a rampage fueled by hate. Anger is not quite the feeling that comes to mind when thinking about all of this, but rather a chillingly bitter disappointment. It’s disappointing that so many of us have forgotten how to talk to one another, and that rage seems to have become the default for so many. Worst of all, Its disappointing

that we have gotten so dour, and divided, as a nation, that it doesn’t seem anything can fix it. My phone, by the way, didn’t have an answer. The only conceivable thing I can think of to do is simply to get out on Nov. 6 and vote for the candidate whom you think will help us make some real changes, someone who is above partisan bickering and grandstanding. Someone who won’t sow division but will instead roll up their sleeves and work on behalf of all of us. If we’re going to fix this chasm we’ve into, we’re going to start somewhere. Let’s choose elected officials who can help lead the way.

After 50 years, man behind the bird bids farewell By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

Being a multi-generational father offers a unique perspective on changing child-rearing trends, what’s in and what’s out in the world of raising and entertaining children. Often, those trends disappear as quickly as they appear, and many of us have found Dr. Spock wasn’t such a bad guy when it came to the basics of how to change a diaper or heat a bottle.

I’ve also endured two completely different blocks of a child’s entertainment. When my first child was born in the 1970s, I suffered through The Smurfs, Fraggle Rock and Scooby Doo. When the second batch came along two decades later, my house was filled with shows like Blues Clues, Dora the Explorer, Barney and a disturbing group of entertainers called The Wiggles. There was very little connection between the two periods

of time, and shows reflected the trends of a changing society. No longer were kids glued to televisions on Saturday morning watching cartoons and most opted for the CD versions of the popular shows. Having three kids in diapers at one time (on the second goround), the television constantly blasted out much too familiar episodes of all my kids’ favorites. At one point, I felt like Holly Hobby was actually stalking me and I

heard that voice in my sleep. And I still have a fear of reoccurring nightmares regarding a partially clothed monkey called Boots. And, through it all, my kids gravitated to the tried and true lessons learned on Sesame Street. While the Count demanded respect among all of my kids, the clear favorite was Big Bird and his zany antics and simplified explanations to complicated questions. see Bird > 7

Letters to the Editor As Election Day approaches, real facts must guide us Dear Editor, Are we using facts or feelings: It can be difficult to make decisions based on facts when emotions and feelings are at an all-time high and they certainly are with this mid-term election. Fact: Dave Brat supported tax cuts (H.R. 1) and initiatives to reduce regulations (H.R. 637) which spurred a strong economy, more jobs, lower unemployment, and put more money in middle class pockets. Feelings: In contrast are we going to feel good if our tax cuts are eliminated and instead increased, are we going to feel good when corporate taxes and regulations are increased causing less growth and fewer jobs, and how good will it feel to know that a socialized health care program will be funded on the backs of our children and bankrupt our Country? Fact: Dave Brat supports securing our borders, protecting our citizens and promoting legal immigration while protecting the rule of law (H.R.4340, H.R.5825&26, H.R.2942). Feelings: In contract, the open borders concept by-passes our laws, increases the risk to citizens and is a slap in the face to every legal immigrant in this Country. Fact: For the first time in 20 years the Chesterfield County Fraternal Order of Police endorsed a candidate, Dave Brat, and not his opponent. You might ask yourself why with his opponent’s “widely” advertised career in law enforcement (8 years in the CIA)? Possibly because Dave Brat is a firm supporter of the Second Amendment (H.R.986 & 4928), Kate’s Law (H.R. 3011), supsee Letters > page 7

Bird continued from >6 My first child loved Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street, but the second generation of kids was Sesame Street devotees, and somehow watching one batch of kids watch a show that has so entertained my first daughter provided a sense of consistency that confirmed —although trends and fads had changed — the well-earned lessons of surviving childhood had not. Earlier this month, the man who donned that bulky yellow costume on PBS announced his retirement. Since that first episode, Caroll Spinney was the voice of Big Bird, and celebrates 50 years of service under the beak. Spinney, an avid puppeteer since his high school

Destruction of yard signs runs counter to First Amendment Dear Editor, I write this letter to share an observation about the First Amendment -- the first and perhaps most dear of

days, spent thousands of shows tucked under those fluorescent feathers, and traveled around the world as Big Bird, even making an appearance with Bob Hope. Now, some of us hold an undying affection for Rocky and Bullwinkle or the Tasmanian Devil, but none of them achieved the worldwide recognition enjoyed by Spinney’s character, and none could claim that the Library of Congress had named them a Living Legend, just one of the many awards and accolades held by the bird. Life goes on and Sesame Street will fill the void, but Spinney’s personality will live on in the personality that has evolved through his years as Big Bird. Somehow, the innocence and naïvetÊ of the oversized

In this political season once again people see it in action on bumper stickers and yard signs that are a perennial part of America’s political landscape. In that tradition of the First Amendment, I have over the years often put up yard signs along the highway adjacent to our property promoting Democratic candidates; indeed at one point I served as co-chairman of the Goochland County Democratic Committee. Over the years my signs have frequently been removed or otherwise made to disappear. This year has been more of the same only perhaps worse. I erected a large Kaine/ Spanberger sign supported by two T posts on our property adjacent to a local intersection of two roads only to have it ripped down and thrown in the woods three times. I have put it back up a fourth time

bird reassured us that asking questions is never bad, and sometimes the simplest of answers make the most sense. I suppose the next-born generation of kids will gaze at a completely new set of shows and entertainment characters, but, rest assured, all of them will eventually recognize one of them as an old friend and confidant. And how did the man who brought the character to life feel as he took his last turn in the costume after five decades on the set? He told a Washington Post reporter, “Playing Big Bird is one of the most joyous things of my life. And watching you was one of the biggest joys for generations of children, mine included.

and wonder whether it will last longer than two or three days before it is vandalized again. I have reported this to the Sheriff’s Office several times but how would one ever catch the perpetrator? And who would do something such as this? A neighbor? Surely not! Someone just passing by? Certainly this person is an over-zealous partisan. What does this say about respect for our fundamental rights? What could be more fundamental than each other’s right to political expression in the course of a political campaign? What does it say about our respect for each other and for our fellow citizen’s rights? About our Constitution and the First Amendment? Vandalism and disrespect should not be a part of political discourse in a civilized democracy. Thank you, Addison B. (Tad) Thompson Goochland

According to the latest statistics provided by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), those whose homes catch fire today are more likely to die than they were a few decades ago. This was the startling statistic behind this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Look. Listen. Learn, Be awarefire can happen anywhere.” Through three simple callsto-action, this year’s theme identifies basic but essential ways people can reduce their risk to fire and be prepared in the event of one: Look for places fire can start Listen for the sound of the smoke alarm Learn two ways out of each room As a service to local residents, particularly those who have barns on their property, Goochland Fire-Rescue held a Barn Fire Safety event during Fire Prevention Week. For those who missed the event, the following best practices and fire safety recommendations are offered: Is your address clearly marked at the main roadway and other side-driveways? Is it visible at night? (Call Station 3 at 784-4068 or Station 5 at 556-5568 for reflective house number signs.) Is your driveway cleared

Lifetime dog licensing begins today Contributed report

Earlier this year, the Goochland Board of Supervisors voted to begin issuing Lifetime Dog Licenses for individual dogs, beginning with 2019 tags. These tags will be available starting today. The due date for obtaining a new dog license is Jan. 31, 2019. The Department of Animal Protection is responsible for enforcing the licensing. The new tags will be sold through the Treasurer’s Office as usual. Current pet owners who have purchased licenses will receive a bill from the Treasurer in late October. Owners who do not receive bills should contact the Treasurer’s Office before the Jan. 31 due date. The Lifetime Dog License

eliminates the need for citizens to re-register the same dog every year. Once purchased, the Lifetime Dog License remains valid as long as the dog’s rabies vaccination is current, and the dog and owner live in Goochland County. Accordingly, the purchase of a Lifetime Dog License will result in a cost and time savings to most citizens because they will no longer have to purchase a new dog license every year. The cost of the tags will be $10. If a Lifetime Dog License becomes invalid, because a dog’s rabies vaccination expires, owners must provide a current rabies certificate to the Treasurer’s Office to re-validate the Lifetime Dog License.

Veterinarians notify local Treasurers when the vaccinations have been administered and the license remains valid. Failure to maintain a current rabies vaccination for a dog could result in a fine in addition to the expiration of the Lifetime Dog License. Licenses may not be transferred. Moving to another jurisdiction or the premature death of a dog will not be grounds for a refund. For more information, check the Goochland County website at www.goochlandva. us . Dog Licensing appears under both the Animal Protection and Treasurer’s pages. Citizens may also call Animal Protection at (804) 556-5302 or the Treasurer’s office at (804) 556-5806.

Goochland goes to the air in 38-8 win over Eagles By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

On a non-traditional day for high school football, it seemed fitting that the Goochland Bulldogs would so off a non-traditional approach to Goochland football. However, the result was the same as the Bulldogs faithful are familiar with. Led by four combined touchdown throws from quar-

terbacks Devin McCray and CJ Towles, the Bulldogs rolled past James River District opponent Prince Edward on a rare Saturday matinee game on Oct. 26. The game against the Eagles was originally scheduled for Oct. 25 to celebrate homecoming, but the weather forecast forced organizers to move the time of the game twice. The first was to Oct. 26 at 2 p.m., but that was pushed

back another two hours due to tests that some Prince Edward players were taking earlier in the day. Once the game got underway, both teams found tough sledding on the field, which was muddy and prone to poor traction and slipping. While the Bulldogs defense was stout against the Eagles run attack, it was the Goochland offense that was of the most detriment to the

Bulldogs attack early on. Goochland had a 25-yard run by Perry Snead-Johnson and a 12-yard run by Quincy Snead called back due to holding penalties. Both of those flags set the Bulldogs behind in down-anddistance and the drives ended with punts. “We kind of hurt ourselves with penalties early on,” Bulldogs coach Alex Fruth said.

The Eagles were also loading up the box to heavily defend against the prolific Goochland rushing attack. “They wanted to put everyone they could in (the box),” Fruth said. “So, that allowed us to try some things that we had repped in practice, but hadn’t had the chance to put into a game yet.” That led to Goochland taking its chances in the passing game and those chances, more

often than not, were incredibly effective. On Goochland’s third drive of the game, which bled from the end of the first quarter into the beginning of the second, Bulldogs quarterback CJ Towles unloaded on a deep ball and hit Snead-Johnson in stride between two Prince Edward defenders for 31 yards and the first score of the game. see Bulldogs>12

Spencer had 32 digs in the loss, while Wonderling had 17 assists. King had seven kills. Goochland’s cross country teams competed in the James River District championship meet on Oct. 24 at Halifax County High School’s course and were very successful. Grace Juran won the district title in the girls race with a time of 20:31. Anna Kate Wirsing was second with a 21:19, Victoria Spooner was fourth with a 22:17 and Zella Warner was one second behind in fifth place. Nadia Esposito was sixth with a 22:19, Marissa Schroder ran a 22:26 for eighth place and Maddie Muniz was 16th with a 25:46. The Bulldogs as a team won the district title as well with a score of 15 points, which was by far the lowest score of the meet. Buckingham was second with 55 points. On the boys side, John Williams led the way with a sixth-place finish with a time of 18:28. Jackson Hoffler finished 15th with an 18:66, Joey Cornell ran a 19:54 for 26th, Max Jarrell was 29th with a

Bulldogs continued from >11 After a quick three-andout from the Eagles, it took Goochland just two plays for Devin McCray to dial up a downfield play to senior Chase Smith. McCray hit Smith, who juggled the ball three times before securing it and completing a 43-yard touchdown pass for a 14-0 lead. Goochland kept the quick strikes coming as the first play on their next drive resulted in a

down strike to Blake Smith and a 41-yard throw to Dillon Tennyson, all in the third quarter. Henry Dolan scored as well for the Cadets. The Cadets will finish the regular season at home on Nov. 3 against Blue Ridge.

CHEER Goochland’s competition cheerleading squad finished second in Region 2A. The Bulldogs qualified for the Class 2 state championships with their regional performance.

35-yard field goal in the quarter to bring the game to its final score of 38-8. Goochland’s final game is on the road and is a huge showdown against Amelia. Not only will the game decide the James River District title, but it will also have huge ramifications on the Region 2A standings. Heading into the matchup, Amelia is at the top of the region and Goochland is third in the rankings, which are sorted by their power ratings. Fruth said that the Bulldogs

have hard work ahead of them to prepare for the Raiders. “We have to be physical,” he said. “We have to have a great week of practice. We have to be prepared. They do a lot of different things on offense,” he added. “We have to understand all of those different things and the different adjustments they make,” Fruth said. “We have to understand when we see certain motions, what is going to follow that. We have to be dialed in and have a great week of practice.”

Later in the quarter, Towles had his second touchdown pass of the game, finding Snead-Johnson for a 29-yard touchdown connection and a 28-0 advantage, which the Bulldogs would take to the halftime break. The burst in the passing attack not only gave another dimension to the Bulldogs offense, but something different on tape for Goochland’s future opponents to worry

about. “(McCray) and (Towles) split some turns and had some really good throws there,” Fruth said. “It’s great for us to be able to show them later what we’ve been talking about and it’s good to see it against someone else doing different things,” he continued. “And, it’s awesome because (Amelia coach) Joe Daniels was probably in the stands and now that’s something else he has to think about on his drive back to Amelia,” the coach

said. “That’s a little bit of what today was about too...breaking tendencies.” In the second half, Goochland received the opening kickoff and had a more traditional Goochland drive with seven runs on the drive which resulted in McCray running it in from 4-yards out for a 35-0 lead. The lone Prince Edward touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 90-yard pass, with a resulting two-point conversion. Jacob Hayward hit a

If a power line should fall on your vehicle, stay inside the vehicle until help arrives, warn others not to touch the vehicle, and have them call for help.

If you must leave the vehicle, jump as far away as possible with both feet landing on the ground at the same time. Don’t touch the vehicle and the ground at the same time. Keep away from heavily flooded and debris-laden areas; power lines could be buried underneath. Protect your pets, keeping them as far away from lines as possible. Anyone who sees a downed power line is encouraged to stay at least 30 feet away and consider the lines energized and dangerous. Call 911 if someone makes contact with a downed power line, but don’t try to rescue them because you risk becoming a victim yourself.

Dave Brat has already proven he can do the job Dear Editor, The citizens of the 7th District have much to be thankful for this year; our local (and national for that matter) economy is booming and unemployment rates for all races of people are at or near historical lows and the average constituent has seen a pay raise of roughly $2500 thanks to the tax cuts and reforms initiated by Donald Trump and the Republicans in Congress. Our country has seen consecutive quarters of over 4% growth in GDP, something never seen during 8 years of Obama, who in fact told us to never expect that type of growth again! New businesses are opening and existing ones are expanding as lower corporate taxes and the elimination of burdensome and excessive government regulations take effect. We can also celebrate the appointment of two, stellar conservative justices to

the Supreme Court. We can show our appreciation for all these positive developments and trends by re-electing our Congressman, Dave Brat, as our representative for the 7th District. Dave has been totally supportive of the Trump agenda; reducing taxes for business and individuals, strengthening our military (done with the big increase in military spending in the last budget), reducing the size of government and government regulations, working for the elimination of Obamacare which has caused a massive rise in premiums, securing our borders from illegal immigration, all of these things while attending hundreds and hundreds of events, meetings and engagements around the District, making himself available to his constituents. Dave has also spearheaded efforts to address local issues of opioid addiction and sex-trafficking. In Goochland, we can personally thank him for helping save our JROTC program at Goochland High School. In spite of all this great news and positive trends, it appears to be a close race for this

seat between Congressman Brat and Abigail Spanberger, a retired National Security Operative (interestingly, 57 Democratic Candidates have this same employment history, quite a coincidence) from the John Brennan led CIA. When I see how deeply Brennan was involved in the attempted ouster of our President through his involvement with the fake Russian Dossier, it makes me wonder how far down through the agency that type of behavior permeated. It comes down to this; if you want to see Nancy Pelosi return as the Speaker of the House and begin impeachment proceeding against Donald Trump and see your tax cuts rescinded and indeed your taxes raised, if you prefer open borders, unchecked immigration and sanctuary cities and government run and dictated healthcare, then vote for the Democrat. If on the other hand, you like your taxes low, wages on the rise, unemployment going down and available jobs going up, vote for your Republican Congressman, Dave Brat! Glenn R. Diersen Sr. Richmond
