For local fire department, hiring is still a challenge By Roslyn Ryan Editor
When it comes to the difficulty in finding qualified new firefighters for Goochland County, Chief Bill MacKay says the reasons aren’t difficult to pinpoint. “Obviously, we’re facing some significant competition from some of the larger localities,” MacKay explained in a recent interview with the Gazette, noting that Goochland typically can’t match the salaries paid by Henrico or Richmond, where the starting salaries for a firefighter are generally higher than in Goochland, which starts new hires to the department at $40K. In addition the salary competition, MacKay said Goochland is facing the same issues many departments across the nation are grappling with, namely the fact that “people are not as attracted to careers in public service.” Basically, he chuckled, “the economy is too good.”
Honoring their service
G
oochland’s Chief Cornerstone Baptist Church held its third annual Veterans Program last Sunday, joining with Midlothian’s Guildfield Baptist Church and Powhatan’s First Antioch Baptist Church to celebrate and honor those who have served our country in uniform. “For those who serve, gratitude is what they deserve,” said guest preacher Rev. Clifford Temple Jr. (right), who urged those gathered to “remember to lift our veterans up in prayer every single day.” The prayer service was followed by a delicious meal in the church hall, organized by the church’s Veterans Committee. Those honored included: front row, from the left, Sean Smith, Spike Williamson, Hank Ragland, and Herbert Delbridge. Back row, from the left, John Carter, Brenda DuBose, Larry Robinson, John Funn, Aja Lyles, Willis Funn, Eugene Brice, Claudette Holmes, Earl Trent, and William Watson.

Company 5 fundraiser and bake sale set Saturday Contributed report
Goochland Company 5 Fire Rescue Auxiliary will sponsor their 2018 Fall Food and Frills Celebration from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the firehouse (2710 Fairground Rd, in Goochland). The annual bake sale will once again feature wonderful homemade baked goods and country ham biscuits, and lunch will be available for
Hiring continued from > 1 Then there is also the simple fact that working as a firefighter carries with it certain negatives not associated with other careers, including 24-hour shifts, exposure to hazardous materials, and the psychological impacts of witnessing suffering and trauma on a regular basis. MacKay also pointed to the fact that many households now rely on two incomes, which makes shift work more burdensome from a scheduling point of view. In Goochland’s case, there
is also the added difficulty of the type and number of calls not being what eager young recruits might be looking for. “Goochland’s not the place that is going to be able to give you a bunch of calls,” MacKay admitted, “so we really can’t scratch that itch for people.” MacKay said the department has been looking at ways to improve their recruiting methods, and could even one day add a school for recruits like the ones found in other, larger localities. That would mean that the county would not be limited to hiring only those who were already trained.

For some veterans, battle for justice continued Vaping: A new Trojan Horse By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Over the course of my journalism career, I have had the singular privilege to interview many military veterans, including men and women who have served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf Wars, and in Iraq and Afghanistan. During those conversations, they have shared with me their stories of heading off to war, their fears, their regrets, and — in just about every single case — the pride they took in
having served. Among the brave heroes that I have interviewed have been many African-Americans, and it has been their stories that I have found myself thinking about in recent days, as the national dialogue over race continues to lurch and sputter. From the Buffalo Soldiers to the Harlem Hell Fighters to the famed Tuskegee Airmen, hundreds of thousands of African-Americans have fought for this nation since its founding. And many, it should be pointed out, served in the United States mili-
Letter to the Editor Community made fundraiser for local fire department a success once again Dear Editor, “Thank you” doesn’t begin to express the appreciation that Crozier Company 2 Auxiliary feels to so many, many, many people who helped us have our 12th very successful Brunswick Stew and Bake Sale day on Saturday, Oct. 27! The bakers in the neighborhood had so many wonderful goodies that the bake sale alone netted over $600! We had more friends and neighbors show up to help us debone the chicken; and to stir the pots for seven hours! Of course we couldn’t do it without our phenomenal Stewmaster, Lloyd Minter, who brought everything together again this year. The Auxiliary members worked hard to cover all the bases and sell as many tickets as possible, and thanks also to all the people who purchased our 850 quarts of stew! It was a group effort, and Company 2 thanks you! Ann O. Casey President Co. 2 Fire Auxiliary

but on what it has the potential to be? That takes a level of faith and devotion I’m not sure I can fathom. As we prepare to celebrate all of our veterans this Sunday, let us remember the example set by those men and women of color who proudly served abroad, even when their lives back home were made more difficult by discrimination and prejudice. They remind us that this great, striving, ever-evolving nation in which we live — even when it has fallen short — has always been worth fighting for.
A soldier shares his story By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
Wisdom abounds around us if we only stop and take the time to listen, and sometimes the simplest of stories offer the most important message. They’re known as America’s “Greatest Generation” and most of them are gone, and the few remaining have become silent reminders to a more noble and reliable past. Their stories are ever-inspiring, and recollections of a generation who fought and won World War II provide a sense of pride and patriotism in all of us. After attending a couple of recent Veterans Day events, I was once again reassured that you learn much more from listening than speaking as I encountered one

These valiant Americans often stood up to protect and defend a nation that had not treated them fairly, one that had not yet found a way to live up to and honor its own commitment to liberty and justice for all. You are probably aware by now that our country is in the grip of an epidemic involving opioid drug abuse. But did you know there is another crisis of substance abuse exploding nation-wide, including right here in your own backyard, maybe even in your own home? The culprit this time is vaping, also known as e-cigarettes. And vaping may turn out to be far more dangerous enemy than you may have first believed. The term vaping comes from the use of an electronic device which simulates smoking tobacco by the user inhaling the vapors of a heated liquid within the device. These liquids come in different flavors. You may also hear it referred to as “Juuling”, named for a prominent brand of e-cigarette products. Vaping is deceptive, because it wears a mask of apparent innocence. Indeed, it was initially marketed as a “safe” alternative to cigarettes. This, in turn, tempted parents to be permissive of teen use and caused communities to shrug at the issue of vaping. But behind the mask lurks significant health risks. A $4 pod of liquid contains as much nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes. Worse, vaping serves as a gateway to harder drugs, including opioids. Left unchecked, our community is in danger of creating a culture of acceptance of a ‘trojan horse’, out of which will spring an army of troubles which can quickly overwhelm us. This month, the head of see Vaping > page 7

the “Grey Death, a deadly and unpredictable cocktail of fentanyl-opioids and ‘fillers’ mixed by illegal drug labs. This is the pathway which generates the tragic headlines in our daily news. So, how do we fight back? The government has some tools to use, but it will mostly be up to you. The latest federal budget package earmarked an increase of $2.7 billion, of which $1.5 billion goes to state grants meant to fight substance abuse. Some of our local organizations receive such funds. I have the honor to chair one of them, the Rural Substance Abuse Awareness Coalition (RSAAC). For the second year in a row, RSAAC has received a $100,000 grant to use in the fight against opioid abuse, with the understanding that gateway drugs, such as vaping, play a role. RSAAC meets monthly in our region, bringing together representatives from the Health Department, G o o c h l a n d - Po w h a t a n Community Services, the Attorney General’s Office, Sheriff’s Office, EMT’s, our schools, citizens, and many more. So, my first piece of advice would be to join RSAAC and start making an immediate impact in your local community.
Our ultimate goal must be to create a culture which rewards the positive benefits of NOT abusing substances, systematically promotes prevention, and provides treatment and recovery plans that get results. What does that look like? Perhaps a regional policy of vapingfree and smoke-free campuses at our schools and youth recreational facilities, a strong advertising campaign in all forms of traditional and social media, mobile treatment centers in our rural area, and the education of parents, students, care-givers, and, well‌ everyone! We all need to step up and fight this problem together, because this affects us all. We must turn away the ‘trojan horse’ of student vaping which has entered our community. Student vaping is unhealthy, illegal, and begins a dangerous journey of lethal substance abuse. A good start would be to check out the options on the RSAAC.org web site and find out how you can make a difference today. Larry Nordvig is the District 2 Supervisor for Powhatan County, and a member of the Rural Substance Abuse Awareness Coalition.
continued from > 6 the Food and Drug Administration said he is considering banning all flavored e-cigarettes. The reason is simple. Vaping among students has sky-rocketed. Indeed, officials have classified the increase in illegitimate use of flavored e-cigarette liquid pods as epidemic. To be clear, vaping, or the attempted purchase of vaping products, for those under 18, is illegal. Nevertheless, recent data shows vaping among students has increased dramatically. In 2017, 2.1 million middle- and highschoolers surveyed had used e-cigarettes in the last 30 days, some as young as ten years old. Worse, a recent study by an FDA partner agency shows our nation has experienced a 75% increase in vaping among high school students in the past year. This is made possible because hiding these devices is simple, since they look like a flash drive and can be “hidden in plain sight of a parent or teacher. Previous well-researched surveys confirm that many of these students will go on to experiment with other drugs, including heroin and

He shipped out to the Philippines with the Quartermasters Corps. “We ran a bakery where we made bread for the troops and the starving people in the streets of Manila,” he said. “We spent every night baking bread.” I asked if he regularly attended these types of memorials, or participated in any reunion type events. “No, I left the Army behind when I got out, and, honestly, I never missed it much,” he said. “My sons — when they were young — used to ask me to camp outside in their small

tent. I told them I’d slept in enough tents to last a lifetime,” he laughed. The man went on to raise a large family now spread all across the nation, and achieved a successful business career. When the war was over, he said, most of the men were anxious to move on. They were enthusiastic about fighting the war, and equally as eager to get on with their lives. “I’m worried that our troops today are becoming war-tired,” he went on. “That’s why I’m here today. I’m worried that men on repeated deployments are becoming battle-weary.” It didn’t strike me as I sat with him, but his comments must have made an impression. As I reflected and studied my notes, it occurred to me that many of today’s soldiers also are ready to move on as they continue our struggles in
Afghanistan. It’s also easy for a nation to lose its vigor for the struggle, and, often, we take for granted the role of the soldier in the field. Past conflicts have taught the valuable lesson that it’s sometimes easy for a nation to forget its fallen warriors. So, this was his soldier’s story, perhaps insignificant as it stands alone, but most important when considering a generation. I doubt that I’ll encounter this gentleman again in this lifetime, but I am undoubtedly the better man for the few minutes we spent together on Veterans Day. His single story and a million others remind us of the selfless sacrifice made by a group of Americans more than six decades ago and why we still refer to them as “the Greatest Generation.”

An exciting one-of-a-kind theater experience will be coming to the Goochland High School Theater on Friday, Nov. 30, as Dr. John Hardy performs his one-man-show performance of “A Christmas Carol.” Hardy, who was invited by the GFWC Goochland Woman’s Club to perform this classic tale, will bring over 40 characters to life during the performance, which has been described by reviewers as a mesmerizing, not-to-bemissed theater experience. As part of Dr. Hardy’s visit to Goochland, the club is also sponsoring a young actor’s workshop on the morning following the event, also taking place at the high school. The workshop will be an exciting opportunity for Goochland’s aspiring young actors to work

Over the course of his career, Hardy has directed over one hundred HARDY professional productions including “Macbeth,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Romeo And Juliet,” “Henry V,” “Julius Caesar,” “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest,” “Tartuffe,” “Oedipus The King,” and “Man Of La Mancha.” As an actor, Hardy has

Bulldogs earn top region seed, win district By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
The Goochland Bulldogs got a sampling of what the next few weeks might hold in store for the undefeated James River District champions as they recorded a 17-12 victory over Amelia on Nov. 3. It was a playoff atmosphere as the team played its second Saturday game in as many weeks, but this time, there was a title on the line. “I love the fact that the last regular season game had a playoff feel. It’s tough to get ready for the playoffs without playing those tough, grind it out kind of games,” Goochland coach Alex Fruth said after the win. “It really allowed us to highlight our toughness and perseverance.” Fruth said the adjusted scheduling worked in the
Bulldogs’ favor. “Two Saturday games in a row helped,” Fruth said. “We understood the routine of what a Saturday would be and allowed us to feel like we were doing our normal game day routine. The extra day of practice was also good, as it gave us a chance to really get in a good groove.” With both teams sporting an undefeated record, the home standing Raiders had their sights set on defending that perfect record. The Bulldogs had something else in mind. After taking the opening kickoff, the Bulldogs marched down the field and scored when Quincy Snead plunged in from the 1-yard line, taking a quick 7-0 advantage. Jacob Hayward added three more points in the opening

Goochland’s defense smothered the Amelia offense, such as here as they stopped Amelia’s Justin Wilson for no gain. The Raidsee Football>12 ers had averaged 42 points-per-game entering the Goochland matchup and the Bulldogs held them to just 12 points.

Goochland’s Grace Juran (364) finished third & Zella Warner (369) finished 13th in the region meet.
The Goochland cross country teams competed at the Region 2A meet at Pole Green Park on Nov. 1 and the Bulldogs girls team continued their strong season. Led by Grace Juran’s thirdplace finish, the Bulldogs girls team finished second in the region and qualified as a team for the Class 2 state meet. “The girls started the season with great expectations,” Goochland coach Andrew Meiller wrote in an email. “Our girls were supposed to be
good and they backed it up. I am really proud of our whole team, not just in regionals, but all season. They worked hard.” No Goochland girls runner finished worse than 20th at Pole Green. Anna Kate Wirsing was seventh with a 21:50, Nadia Esposito was 10th with a 22:02, Zella Warner was 13th with a 22:42 and Marissa Schroder was 16th with a 23:19. Victoria Spooner finished 17th after running a 23:41 and Maddie Muniz was 19th with a time of 24:32. The team scored 48 points, 19 points behind region champ Maggie Walker. Meiller wrote that Juran is
a “special talent” who works harder than anyone on the team, but noted that all of the girls have stepped up at different times this season. “I’ve really been impressed with how the girls stepped up to make up for their teammates that were struggling with injuries,” he wrote. “Zella Warner was dealing with an injury and Anna Kate Wirsing got stronger. Emmy Paulin was lost for the season and Nadia Esposito moved up to the third-fastest time on the team. Our senior captain, Maddie Muniz, has been with this team for years see Running>12

Goochland volleyball falls to Bruton in region semis By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
After Goochland took down Nandua in four sets on Nov. 3, the assumption was the region semifinal would be play at Bluestone on Nov. 5. But, the ninth-seeded Bruton Panthers shocked Bluestone in a five-set win on Nov. 3, meaning the Bulldogs would host the region semifinals. However, Bruton continued its surprising postseason run with a 25-27, 25-13, 25-14, 25-17 win over Goochland, ending the Bulldogs season. “They played well,” Goochland head coach Rachel Jacobsen said. “They did everything they could. We moved some people around, but we did what we could out there.” The first set was an absolute battle between the two teams. Goochland went ahead 18-14 after a Bruton error
Running continued from >11 and you won’t find a more dedicated leader. She works hard at every practice and takes care of things with this team on and off the course.” Jackson Hoffler was the
Football continued from >11 quarter and the Bulldogs took a 10-0 lead to the locker room at intermission. As the second half began, it was Amelia’s turn and they mounted their first scoring drive, capped by a 35-yard pass touchdown pass from Raider quarterback Jalen Brown.
and seemed to try to stake an early claim on the set, but the Panthers stormed back with a 7-1 run to turn the deficit into a 21-19 lead. Then, the teams went point-for-point, with neither team gaining more than a twopoint advantage on the other. Over the final 12 points of the set, the score was tied four times. Eventually, Mary King came up with a big block for the Bulldogs to make it 26-25, which was followed by tip by Trinity Wonderling that found the floor and gave the Bulldogs a 27-25 win. The teams went at it again in the second set, but the Bulldogs started to make some mental mistakes and were committing unforced errors. Those errors allowed Bruton to get out to a large lead that was too much for the Bulldogs to overcome. At one point in the sec-
ond set, the Panthers led by as many as 13 points at 24-9. Goochland forced four set points, but the Panthers took set two 25-13. In the third set, Bruton jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Goochland was able to stop the bleeding. The outside hitters for the Panthers were aggressively sending spikes at the Bulldogs defense, which was effective strategy against the defense. “They had some really big hitters,” Jacobsen said. “I think the difference was that we don’t have a lot of heat, but we have a lot of defense. They were getting past most of the defense that we had.” Jacobsen said that the energy level at some point in the second and third set dipped as well for the team, which also worked against the Bulldogs. “There was a lull in energy,” she said. “They were too on top of us to give them that, but
we did.” Set four was more like the first set, with both teams taking control at different points of the match. Bruton led early on, but the
Bulldogs fought back to take the lead at 11-10 and again at 13-11 after a point by Cate Hinckley. The Panthers went on an 11-0 run, however, which
turned the tide in their favor and would win the set 25-17 and take the game 3-1. “They worked their tails off,” Jacobsen said. “I think they rose to the occasion.”
top-finishing boys runner for Goochland with a 13th-place finish in 18:55. Hoffler qualified as an individual for the state meet after his performance. John Williams was 15th with a time of 19:04, Joey Cornell ran a 19:58 for 29th and Geoffrey Staunton ran a
21:26 for 60th overall. Max Jarrell was 61st with a time of 21:26, Ben McCray was 62nd after running a 21:29 and Reid Dameron rounded out the Bulldogs contingent with a 65th-place finish in 21:38. “The boys ran really well,” Meiller wrote. “All seven boys
pushed themselves. It was just a case of the other teams being faster this year. I can’t say enough about our two top guys, Jackson and John. They made a goal in the first week of the season that they were going to make states as individuals, if not as a team. They both made all-region and Jackson quali-
fied for states. John just missed it. They pushed each other all season.” The girls team and Hoffler will now shift their attention to the state meet in The Plains, Va. at Great Meadow. “We just need to maintain our focus,” Meiller wrote. “(We need) to take care of our bodies
through nutrition, sleep and hydration and keep positive attitudes toward Friday. These girls are a talented group.” The Bulldogs girls team will have their state meet begin at 1 p.m. Hoffler will run in the Class 2 boys meet at 1:45 p.m. on the same day.
Goochland responded quickly after picking up an errant onside kick and moving deep in to Raiders territory. But that drive ended when the Bulldogs fumbled through the end zone and came away with no points. With the score at 10-7, the Goochland defense swarmed the Raiders punter as he attempted to kick out of his own end zone.
The result was a fumble recovery on the 1-yard line, and Bulldog quarterback Devin McCray covered that final yard to give the Bulldogs a 17-7 lead early in the fourth quarter. Goochland’s secondary recorded three turnovers, each coming at opportune times stopping potential Amelia scoring drives. Fruth said the overall
defensive performance was the real difference in the game. “It was a great night for the (defense)…three turnovers, held them to under 30 yards rushing,” Fruth said. “Coach Summitt, Hansen, and Gordon had those boys primed and ready to go. I thought we had a good game plan and allowed our kids to use our aggressiveness and speed to rally to the ball, play
after play.” The Raiders added another score late in the game, but that’s as close as they would come to a James River District title and their first victory over the Bulldogs in recent memory. For the Bulldogs, it was a confidence builder as they assume a familiar number one position in the upcoming playoffs beginning with a contest
against Brunswick on Friday at 7 p.m.. “It was great to play a team like Amelia and battle through a game like that,” Fruth said. The coach was also pleased as his team has home field throughout the playoffs, as long as they win. “It’s nice to know that we get to be home for the first three games of the postseason.”

Giving thanks, going green When it comes to holiday entertaining, a few simple steps can ensure an environmentally-friendly (and guest-friendly!) event
T
hanksgiving is a holiday to give thanks and share special moments with family and friends. While the original Thanksgiving might have taken place during a time when food was sparse, nowadays Thanksgiving often involves excessive amounts of food, with more food ending up in the garbage than in celebrants’ bellies. The United States Department of Agriculture projects that Americans will throw away more than 200 million pounds of edible turkey meat this Thanksgiving holiday. And Thanksgiving typically ushers in a period of wastefulness, as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says American households produce roughly 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than during the rest of the year. Reducing waste is a worthy goal year-round, but especially so during the holiday season. And accomplishing that goal can be done without sacrificing holiday traditions.
materials or other items that can be turned into wreaths and garlands. Vases filled with pine cones and acorns make for beautiful, inexpensive and festive decorations.
Shop locally and organically. When shopping for Thanksgiving dinner, choose local produce, poultry and grains whenever possible. Resist the urge to buy more than you need as well. Skip some of the less-popular dishes that are used only to make the table seem full. Buy a small turkey or think about only serving turkey breasts, which tend to be the most popular cuts of the bird. VDOF announces winners of 2018 forestry grants Friends of James River State Parks among the groups to receive funds Contributed report
The Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF) recently announced that the Friends of James River State Parks is among the organizations that have received 2018 Urban and
Community Forestry (U&CF) Grants. Funds for these projects originate from the USDA Forest Service. A total of $216,923 has been allocated with an estimated match of $411,290. “The Urban and Community Forestry Grant Program supports projects that promote the protection and enhancement of urban and community forest ecosystems, tree planting, the care of trees, as well as education on tree issues in cities, towns and communities across Virginia,” said VDOF Urban
Forestry Coordinator Barbara White. “Grants awarded through this program encourage local government and citizens to get involved in creating and supporting long-term and sustained urban and community forestry projects and programs at the local level.” Projects include scholarships, educational events, support for the Master Naturalist and Virginia Tree Stewards, remediation for emerald ash borer destruction, urban forestry
planning and zoning ordinances, community design assistance, invasive species control, non-profit support and tree inventories. The Virginia Department of Forestry protects and develops healthy, sustainable forest resources for Virginians. With nearly 16 million acres of forestland and more than 108,000 Virginians employed in forestry, forest products and related industries, Virginia forests provide an overall economic output of more than $21 billion annually.
