County is the least populated in U.S. with Moody’s AAA rating
By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Adding another financial feather to the county’s cap, Goochland leaders announced last week that the county has been assigned a AAA credit rating by Moody’s Investors Service. In receiving the AAA rating in its firstever attempt, Goochland becomes the smallest county in the United States to be rated Aaa by Moody’s, as currently no
other county with a population under 75,000 has the designation. Goochland County’s current population is approximately 23,000. In a meeting with Moody’s analysts last October, county officials reportedly highlighted Goochland’s strengths in management and leadership, the local economy, planned growth, strategic planning, and most importantly in financial management, including strength in the areas of budgetary performance and financial flex-
ibility and liquidity during the meeting. “The Moody’s AAA credit rating, along with our existing S&P AAA credit rating, serves as further affirmation of the County’s financial health,” said Board of Supervisors chairman Ken Peterson. “Goochland will benefit from this rating in many ways, including an enhanced ability to attract and retain businesses, improved access to the capital markets see Credit rating > 5

Any hungry hunters who find themselves near the Fife Company 4 firehouse this Saturday would be wise to stop by the Company 4 Fire and Rescue Auxiliary’s 2018 Craft Show, Hunters Lunch, and Bake Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The annual sale will once again feature delicious homemade baked goods, and lunch — consisting of BBQ, bean soup, vegetable soup and chili — will be available for purchase. All money raised from the sale will go towards helping to pay off the loan the organization took out to help pay for the firehouse’s kitchen renovations and new dormitory facilities. “We really appreciate all of the support we have received over the years,” said Auxiliary member Faye Mann, and they are hoping for another successful event this year. The Legacy Project has been re-named “The Center for American War Letters,” and the collection is now archived at Chapman University. “These letters and emails help us to honor and CARROLL remember the troops, veterans, and military family members who have served this nation. These are their words, their stories, their voices,” said Carroll, “and no one can tell their stories better than they can. I also hope this project will encourage
service members and veterans to write letters to their loved ones about their experiences, even if they relate to events that happened years or even decades ago.” Carroll will have his latest book for sale, and will also accept family war letters-original or photocopies--for preservation. The meeting will be held at the Goochland Legion Hall, located at 3386 River Road West, Goochland, and will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a buffet supper. All veterans are welcome to attend. Goochland scout using stellar sales skill to help others Garnett among the nation’s best in Boy Scout’s annual popcorn sale fundraiser By Roslyn Ryan Editor
For Goochland super salesman Beck Garnett, the keys to having a successful sales career include perfecting your pitch, believing in the product, and learning how to forge ahead when things aren’t going your way. Its these truisms that have helped Garnett earn national acclaim and set several sales records in his field, which is made all the more impressive by perhaps one thing he doesn’t yet have: a drivers license. Garnett, 14 years old and a member of Boy Scout Troop 444, is currently among the top sellers nationwide in the Boy Scouts annual popcorn sales fundraiser, having raised over $111,807 (with $48,973.50 of that coming from online sales). If that sounds like a lot of popcorn, it is: Not only
has Garnett consistently been the top seller in the Heart of Virginia Council, but he often sells more on his own than many entire troops manage to move. For the past two years, he has been number one in sales for the entire East Coast, and number two in the nation. Beck’s mother April, who pitches in to help with some of the record keeping and deliveries, says it’s her son’s drive and commitment that have impressed her the most. “He has an amazing work ethic, she said, pointing out that the popcorn sales are essentially a full-time job from August to December. After he comes home from school each day, she said, he immediately goes into sell mode. Perhaps as inspiring as Beck’s work ethic, however, is his generosity. In addition to helping support numerous community organizations, Beck has donated $24,000 so far to help underfunded troops through the council’s Scoutreach program. Last year, Troop 442 in South Richmond was able to purchase brand new camping gear — including tents, packs and cook kits — finally allow-
ing the campers to enjoy the kind of trips that other scouts might take for granted. “What’s impressed me so much about Beck is that he’s not just out there trying to raise money for his troop, said Todd Martin, director of support services for the Heart of Virginia Council. “He’s out there trying to help these Scoutreach troops get started and have the same opportunities that he has had. Even with Beck’s considerable effort and determination, both he and his mother Photo by Roslyn Ryan acknowledge that the support of the community has been a Beck Garnett has raised over $110,000 through the Boy Scouts’ popcorn sales fundraising program, and has donated $24,000 to help underfunded scout troops through the organization’s major factor in his success. Scoutreach initiative. “So many of his customers are just really invested in seeing him reach his goal,
April said. “They always say,
‘We want our local kid to be
number one’. Unfortunately, even stellar careers must eventually come to an end: Beck says this will likely be the last year that he actively sells popcorn, and plans to transition into more of an advisory role helping

Grading the midterm: What we learned (and didn’t) By Roslyn Ryan Editor
With the midterm elections now over, things in our small town have begun to return to normal. The campaign signs are coming down, and election-related Facebook posts featuring that little orange Angry Face emoji have dropped to near-record lows. Given the chance to grade this midterm overall, I’d say we got an A in drama, a gentleman’s C in rhetoric, and a good solid B for par-
ticipation (at least in Goochland, the turnout at the polls was higher than expected). It certainly wasn’t always pretty: Politics these days has begun to feel like a bloodsport, and it was evident during the run-up to last week’s voting that many candidates are happy to ratchet up the intensity to the point of lunacy if it means gaining an edge. The slogans get more acerbic, the messages get dumbed further down, and the fear-mongering continues. Meanwhile, many members of
the voting public appear happy to traffic in silly memes, ridicule those with different political opinions, and double-down on whatever stance their party insists they take. The unfortunate news about this most recent election cycle is that some of us seemed to forget almost all of the lessons we learned in 2016 — including “don’t mix friendship and politics”— and also apparently neglected to complete the assigned reading of chapter two in the “How to be a Decent Human” handbook, specifically the section entitled “Stop
Stealing Your Neighbor’s Yard Signs.” The good news, of course, is that we can vow to improve. We can stop bickering and retreating to our corners when complicated issues arise. We can seek out information that doesn’t just bolster our preconceived notions about people who don’t look, or act, or vote like us, and really try to understand where the other side is coming from. I know we have it in us. The next election, after all, will be here before you know it. Class dismissed.
‘Haunted’ homes once offered late-night fun By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
Even with all the high-tech devices, hand-held video games and phones that sometimes seem smarter than their owners, teenagers today don’t enjoy the same entertainment we did as adolescents. In most cases, that’s a good thing, and the long list of activities or previous generations of teens is probably not a shining example for today’s youth. I’m speaking of a bygone phenomenon called the haunted house. It was nothing for a carload or two of teens to pile in a car and head to
one of our local houses of horror in the Richmond area. I missed the sad saga of the River City’s famous Blue Shingles, a once beautiful estate built on the bluffs along the James River behind the Carillon. In the early 1960s, the abandoned mansion became the home of partying youths who nearly destroyed the once stately home, all in an attempt to be scared out of their wits. The home featured a bricked courtyard with octagon pool at the end of the winding road that led up to the house. It was by that very pool that Lorenzo Evans Jr. shot and killed himself on Easter Sunday

1955. The rest is predictable, and legend had it that the unresolved war veteran’s ghost haunted the grounds. That was the initial attraction, but teenagers soon realized the estate provided an unsupervised, out of the way party spot, the copper blue shingles long turned green. It wasn’t the only accessible haunted venue in Richmond. An old farmhouse near Ellerson’s Crossroads was widely known for its ghosts, and teens quickly latched on to the spot for day and night house parties. The big old house, located near Henrico High School, held lurid tales of a butler’s murder,
and a less than devoted farmer’s wife who met their demise on the winding staircase in the foyer. Of course, there were the obligatory blood droplets on the wall, and the strange sounds that always went bump in the night. Both teens and spirits were thwarted when local police put up a chain at the entrance, and issued regular patrols throughout the property at night. Of all the less than supernatural experiences I had as a youth, the most significant required a drive to West Point, home of the infamous “Light.” see Fun > 7

Letters to the Editor Hard work of many made county election successful once again Dear Editor, Incomplete and unofficial returns from last week’s election show Goochland’s turnout was 75.3 percent of active voters, almost 12 percent higher than the 63.5 percent statewide average. Once again Goochland leads the Commonwealth in voter turnout. Although the county turned in a majority for the Republican senate and house candidates, voters in Three Square Precinct were once more the bellwether for the district, giving a majority to Democrats Tim Kaine and Abigail Spanberger . We are thankful that voters throughout the county were able to exercise their franchise without any serious difficulties or impediments. We are grateful for the goodwill of voters across the county who often stood in line patiently for more than 20 minutes to cast their ballots. As you prepare for Thanksgiving Day, please remember your neighbors whose civic responsibility made this possible. Their performance embodies the five ‘Rs’ of their training: Responsible, Resilient, Resolute, Resourceful, and Respectful. At Fife, please thank Chief Robbin Bryce, Asst. Chief Venna Brown, Shirley Foutz, Ron Jenkins, Sara Reed, and Mara Hilliar, and Deb Loving. At Hadensville, please thank Chief Shirley Christian, Asst. Cohoke Crossroads was the scene of many a frenzied Friday continued from >6 night, and, on some evenings, Just outside the sleepy town, it was difficult to find a spot a tiny railroad crossing called to park.
As a youth, we made the drive to West Point on several late night adventures. It always scared our dates, and, quite honestly, unnerved us all. I saw
something several times, sometimes just a glimmer off the tracks and sometimes a lightning-like flash. I’m pretty sure what I saw
wasn’t a ghost, but the adventure of searching sure was exciting. Kids today, I suppose, have better things to do than ghost bust.
But, make no mistake, the fear of the first step into a haunted house at midnight is an experience you won’t soon forget.

At Blair Road, please thank Chief Sharon Gilley, Asst. Chief, Jennifer Palmore, Fred Roensch, Angela Rhodes-Robinson, Maggie Antoine, Paul Miller Jr., and Connie Snead. At the Central Absentee Precinct, please thank Chief Barbara Shelton, Asst. Chief Sam Bailey, and Bob Swinson.
In the Goochland County administration we had unstinting help from dedicated staff in the IT department and the Department of Buildings and Grounds who prepared the polling places for voters. Throughout the year the Board of Supervisors and County Administrator have provided the financial and material support essential to an efficient operation. They all deserve our thanks. The Goochland Sheriff ’s Department and State Police Troopers provided unobtrusive but dependable and reassuring security through the day for which we were extremely grateful. At the very hub of the operation, please thank our new Director of Elections/General
Registrar Ryan Mulligan who came into the operation only three weeks before the election and led the team to a very successful election. We are, of course, once again indebted to former Registrar Frances Ragland, who came out of retirement in midOctober to assist Ryan, and to former Deputy Registrar Toni Holcombe who also came out of retirement to assist Frances and Ryan. Together with Assistant
Registrar Kendall Hutchinson they created a formidable team that worked seamlessly and tirelessly to ensure Goochland voters could exercise their democratic franchise. Last, but not at all least, we should all extend the greatest appreciation to the political parties and their engaged, impassioned supporters who exhibited courtesy and respect to the supporters of the other side, demonstrating the nobil-
ity and decency for which Goochland voters have become renowned. And if Goochland County voters are known across the Commonwealth to stand a little taller than others, it is only because these are shoulders that we stand on.

Muddy field no match for Bulldogs in 26-8 win By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
It looked like smooth sailing as Kameron Holman took the opening kickoff in Friday’s Region 2A opening round playoff game and galloped the length of the field, setting up Goochland deep in Brunswick territory with only seconds off the clock. But, it was quickly apparent that a sloppy track would make this evening anything but routine and every yard would be hard earned against a stubborn Brunswick defense. However, the Bulldogs were able to pull off the win in a 26-8 final and advance in the Region 2A playoffs. “The elements did a great job of slowing us down, along with Brunswick’s safeties and linebackers flying down hill,” Goochland coach Alex Fruth said after his first playoff win at the helm.
The weather played havoc with the coach’s original game plan, but the team adjusted well. “I thought we had a tough time gaining traction on the turf and that it hurt us with some of the plays we tried to run Friday,” he said. “Our halftime adjustments to more downhill/straight ahead run game paid off and our size wore the (defensive) line out.” Again, the coach said the defense was stingy even with the muddy field. “Our (defense) did a great job of keeping things in front of them throughout the game, which is what you have to do on a muddy track.” After moving backward on that opening drive, Jacob Hayward salvaged the doomed drive with a 24-yard field goal. Black brought experience, leadership in senior season By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Goochland’s Margaret Black was the lone senior for the Bulldogs volleyball team this season.
This season, it was easy to keep track of the seniors on the Goochland volleyball team. There was just one— Margaret Black. Black, however, brought significant leadership and experience to the Bulldogs this season. She was the last remaining member of the 2015 team that won the Class 2A state championship. “It’s been different,” she said about being the lone senior on
the team. “There have always been people in front of me. There were seven seniors last year. I’m not used to being the oldest one, especially the only one. But, everyone (has made) my last year count.” Black led by example on the court this season and certainly made her presence known. She was named secondteam All-James River District and recorded 14 digs and four kills in the four-set loss to Bruton on Nov. 6 in the Region 2A semifinals. Black also had five kills in a three-set sweep of Central
Lunenburg on Sept. 27, 12 digs and six kills in a sweep of Bluestone on Sept. 24, 18 digs and four aces against Prince Edward in a 3-0 win on Sept. 20 and had seven kills against Cumberland in a four-set win on Sept. 11. Black scored five kills against Buckingham on Sept. 6 and led the team with 13 kills against Maggie Walker in a four-set win on Sept. 5. She also had 16 digs in a four-set loss to Nottoway on Aug. 30 and nine kills in an Aug. 28 win over Central Lunenburg. see Black>9

Roundup: Goochland girls XC finishes fifth at state meet By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Goochland’s girls cross country team had a strong showing at the Class 2 state cross country meet at Great Meadow in The Plains, Va. Grace Juran led the way for the Bulldogs, finishing 10th in the state with a time of 20:07. As a team, Goochland finished fifth in the state with 129 points. The Bulldogs were just four points back of fourthplace Wilson-Memorial. Anna Kate Wirsing was 17th overall with a time of 20:41, Zella Warner was 29th with a 21:09, Nadia Esposito was 44th with a 22:04 and Marissa Schroder was 65th with a 22:52. Victoria Spooner was 66th with a 22:56 and Maddie Muniz rounded out the Goochland contingent with a 76th-place finish in 23:51.

That trend finally produced a safety as Justin Woodson was strategically located on one of those bad snaps, sacking the quarterback in the end zone. Goochland’s second score was also the result of fumble recovery by Holman in the
Clarke County was the state champion with 51 points, with Maggie Walker second and Glenvar third. Jackson Hoffler was the lone Bulldogs boys runner to compete at the state meet. He finished 69th with a time of 19:11.
COLLEGE Goochland alum Reid Chenault saw significant playing time under center for the University of Richmond on Nov. 10 in a 28-9 loss to No. 16 Maine. Chenault was 19-for-34 for 224 yards through the air and rushed for 32 more yards and the Spiders only touchdown of the game. Chenault ran the ball in from 7-yards out, but failed on the 2-point conversion attempt. It was the first rushing touchdown of his college career. He has seen action in three
games this year for the Spiders and has thrown for 282 yards and a touchdown this year. He also has 59 rushing yards.
VOLLEYBALL Madelyn Ott continues to make waves in her junior season at Georgia State. Ott scored 15 kills in the Panthers four-set win over Georgia Southern on Nov. 7. She followed that up with 16 kills, matching her career-high on Nov. 9 in a four-set loss to Georgia Southern. She recorded 82 kills this season and averages two kills per set.

sons for the Bulldogs this year. Entering the playoffs, however, Black was the most experienced voice in the room. After the state championship win in 2015, Black was a member of the Bulldogs team that made it to the Group 2A
East semifinal in 2016, a fourset loss to Buffalo Gap. She was also a part of the 2017 team that went undefeated until the Class 2 state semifinal loss to Wilson-Memorial in a wild five-set showdown with the Hornets.
That Bulldogs team didn’t drop a set all season until the state quarterfinals against Luray. In her high school career, Black was a member of a state championship team, two region championship teams
and several district championship squads. “I’ve been through the playoffs, through every stage,” she said. “I know what it’s like and what to expect. I know what to look for and it’s good to pass it on to the people coming up.”
While Black and the Bulldogs did not advance deep into the playoffs this season after the loss to the Panthers, the experience that she provided for the team this season will benefit Goochland’s volleyball team moving forward.
red zone that was capped by a 7-yard run by Goochland quarterback Devin McCray, giving the home-standing Bulldogs a 12-0 lead. McCray adjusted his game as the footing worsened, and ran the option to perfection, usually opting to keep the ball and head downfield. “Devin did a great job running the ball. On a wet night, the less ball exchanges we have, the better we are for it,” Fruth said. “We asked him to do some read option and QB sneaks, and both turned out to
be our best hitters Friday night. As the playoffs get going, his role keeps expanding.” Quincy Snead broke free for 27 yards in the third quarter giving Goochland a 19-0 lead. McCray followed that score with a 19-yard scamper making it 26-0. Brunswick finally broke the ice in the fourth quarter as running back Issiah Simmons scored on a 12-yard run. The visitors recovered a controversial onside kick that, for all appearances, failed to cover the required 10 yards.
Several questionable calls later, Goochland ended the mud fest and headed for warmer surroundings with a 26-8 victory. The first playoff win for Fruth would not have won a beauty contest, but the final numbers gave the coach a reason to be encouraged as the competition stiffens next week. “I thought Travelle Jones and the rest of the defensive line had a really good night. We ended up giving up 47 yards on the ground and had
a safety and picked up two fumbles. That is another night where the entire (defensive) unit did a great job of causing chaos within the opponent’s (offense,)” Fruth said. A familiar playoff opponent returns to Goochland in the form of King William for the next round. Fruth knows that challenge will require full warrior mode from his squad. “It seems like we will have two battles this week -- the rain and King William,” Fruth said. “We will have to have a good week of practice and
work around the elements in order to really take advantage of our practice times.” Stopping the big play potential of the Cavaliers should provide a key to the Bulldogs continued success. “King William is explosive. Looking at them you see a team that has a bunch of explosive plays, a super aggressive defense that is trying to bring pressure, and a return game that has accounted for a bunch of (touchdowns.) They are 9-1 for a reason. They are a really good team.”

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County
November 15, 2018
www.goochlandgazette.com
GoochlandCares works to help clients prevent, treat diabetes Contributed report
The prevalence of diabetes globally and nationally is on the rise. In the United States, about 9.4 percent of the country’s population has diabetes, and 23 percent of those adults do not even realize that they have this life-threatening health condition. Undiagnosed diabetes in severe cases can lead to kidney disease, kidney failure, heart disease, stroke, blindness, neuropathy of the lower extremities, and even death. Diabetes is a very common health condition that is frequently misunderstood. It is caused by elevated blood sugar levels in the body, which is normally regulated by the pancreas. There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile onset diabetes, is usually developed in the beginning years of childhood due to a malfunctioning pancreas. Type 2 diabetes, also known as adult onset diabetes, is developed later in life because of the effects of unhealthy lifestyle habits on the body.
The main difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes is that type 2 can be prevented. According to the CDC, 90-95 percent of all cases of diabetes are type 2. This means that about 90 percent of people diagnosed with diabetes could have prevented their health condition by taking the proper steps. Many people don’t realize that type 2 diabetes can be reversed if the correct changes are made to one’s lifestyle choices. Research has found significant data about the correlation between increasing exercise and preventing the health complications in prediabetics. By spreading awareness about the symptoms and effects of diabetes, and the steps to prevent it we can reduce the numbers of people becoming diagnosed and reverse the chances of those who are in the prediabetic stage, on the path to developing it. There is a stage before developing diabetes called prediabetic, which means the person is on the track to developing diabetes unless changes are
made. It is very important to become aware of the symptoms of diabetes because early detection can prevent one from developing it. Symptoms of diabetes include increased thirst and urination; fatigue; dizziness; weight loss (despite eating more); takes longer for wounds to heal; and blurry vision. November has been designated for American diabetes awareness month but detecting and treating diabetes is a year-round effort at GoochlandCares. About 30 percent of the clinic clients have different levels of diabetes. GoochlandCares works with the clients to manage and treat their own condition to gain control of their symptoms and complications. During all evaluations of new clinic clients, they are tested for diabetes, and determine if their results are normal, prediabetic, or diabetic. If the client’s results are prediabetic or diabetic, then the doctor will follow up with them on the action plan. The primary physician explains the outcomes and allows the client
time to create lifestyle changes in their diet and exercise. If the client is unable to make these changes then they will be prescribed medication that helps regulate their blood sugar levels. Becoming aware of your lifestyle habits and creating a healthy change can decrease your chances of developing diabetes. Remember diabetes can only be prevented if you take the action in your own hands to make the right changes. Here are a few tips on creating a healthy lifestyle. Be active! The American Heart Association recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most days of the week. Exercise is a key element to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. Obesity is the leading risk factor in developing diabetes. Take control of your diet! Many people believe that diabetics must follow a special diet, but in reality, the principles of healthy eating are the same for everyone. A well-balanced
diet helps control the symptoms of diabetes. Some thoughts to keep in mind when planning your meals, choose high-fiber slow-release carbs, limit sweets, and choose healthy fats. Get involved with a healthcare team. Take the time to seek primary care and talk to your physician about your status and options that lay ahead of you. Work with trainers or dietitians to keep you accountable with your exercise and diet habits. Manage Stress! Stress can create a block in the road and prevent you from properly taking care of yourself. Develop appropriate ways of managing your stress so it doesn’t become a detrimental effect on your life. GoochlandCares is a private, 501(c) (3), non-profit corporation that provides health care and basic human services to Goochland residents in need.
