Play continued from >1 of the Charles Dickens classic to Goochland High School for a performance sponsored by the GFWC Goochland Woman’s Club. Hardy, an award-winning professional actor, director and teacher currently serving as an Associate Artist with The Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia, admits that it did initially seem like a daunting task to bring over three-dozen characters to life, but explained in an interview last week that this was also the exact thing that convinced him to do it. “If something seems like the scariest thing in the world, that’s why you pick that thing,” Hardy said happily. “It is scary, but that’s also the reason the play is so good.” Hardy, nationally known for his one-man play, Rattlesnake, describes his production as “a loyal adaptation of the book,” noting that he wanted to retain, as much as possible, the essence of the book in its original form. The play follows the book, scene by scene. “Even though it is the same story as the book, the

experience of actually watching an actor move through the events of a play is vastly different than simply hearing the story or reading the book. I get entirely caught up in the story as I am doing the play, and the audience goes right along with me.” From the first moment of the play until the last, Hardy never leaves the stage and he never changes costume. How then, does he manage to portray over forty characters? “Well, that’s the reason it is a difficult play to act,” Hardy said. “The characters are defined by variations in accents and speech patterns as well as physical traits. Most of the time, when acting in a play or a film, an actor has the job of creating one character, and that is difficult enough, but forty? It’s a big job, to say the least. “ In working on A Christmas Carol, Hardy found that the story had much more to offer than he originally believed: “I was surprised at how funny it was,” Hardy said. “Dickens has taken this serious subject and somehow made it funny. It is a celebration of the spirit of Christmas. That is the best word that I can think of in describing this piece: celebration — it is a celebration.” Hardy has a special rela-

Since then he has been in four different productions of A Christmas Carol. “I suppose that is why I wanted to return to it by doing my own adaptation and taking on the seemingly impossible task of doing it as a one-man play,” Hardy said. Hardy recently performed A Christmas Carol to soldout houses at the Duke City Repertory Theatre in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where the Albuquerque Journal described it as “a stunning work of theatrical virtuosity.” “A Christmas Carol,” A One-Man Play, Adapted and Performed by John Hardy, runs approximately seventy-five minutes and is performed in one act. It is appropriate for audiences of any age but is best suited for ages ten and above. Horn sworn in as new District 3 school board representative Contributed report

On Monday, Nov. 12, Karen Horn was sworn in by the Goochland County Clerk of Court as the new School Board Representative for District 3. Horn was elected during the Nov. 6 special election to fill the District 3 seat until the November 2019 gen-

Valor continued from >1 — Captain Dean Dunn, Firefighter/EMS Provider Kevin Hatcher and Firefighter/ EMS Provider Robert “Chris Ferguson — were part of a team of rescuers dispatched in the early hours of May 18, after a frantic 911 call reporting two people stranded in a stalled car on Riddles Bridge Rd, in danger of being swept away. Arriving on scene to find the two people unreachable and the road surface quickly deteriorating beneath the rushing water of a swollen creek, the rescuers quickly formulated a plan. The decision was made to send in a “walking team of three specially trained members of the Water Rescue

eral election. Horn began a 31-year career in public education as a kindergarten and 3rd grade teacher in Henrico County Public Schools in 1987, before becoming the Virginia Department of Education Licensure Specialist in 1999, a position she filled for 10 years.

Mrs. Horn was then employed by Powhatan County Public Schools, where she retired as Director of Human Resources in 2018. Among all of her positions in education, she considers her first positionthat of mother to her two children-as the most important. “I committed my heart,

head and hands to children throughout my life and career in education, said Horn. “I will now commit my time and energy to work for excellence to support the vision and mission of Goochland County Public Schools for children, families and citizens. Thank you to all the citizens who

Team to attempt to affix personal flotation devices to the trapped occupants of the vehicle. When this proved to be impossible due to the condition of the road — one slip on the unstable surface and the victims and rescuers would have been swept away, MacKay explained—they raced to find another option. In his letter nominating the three men for the Medal of Valor, MacKay detailed the harrowing next steps. “A plan was developed to use a 35-foot ladder and secure it to the end of the previously deployed aerial truck, he explained. “This would give the team the added reach to potentially bring the victims out by using the ladders as a bridge. However, to accomplish this, Captain Dunn and the firefighters would have to

work unsecured and without the benefit of using each other to offset the force of the moving water. A bridge was formed from the aerial truck and the tip of the 35-foot ladder was able to be placed inside the hatchback of the car. This would allow the trapped occupants to remain above the water and literally crawl over the ladder to safety. Despite the fact that the driver of the stranded vehicle, due to a prior injury, was unable to use the ladder, the individual was eventually pulled from the water by way of a “stokes basket, a stretcher-like apparatus that could be pushed along the ladder with the victim on it. To MacKay, the work of the three men that night offered a sterling example of bravery and dedication.

Fake and bake: A decade of disastrous desserts By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Well, readers, Thanksgiving is finally here, which means those of us who are blessed enough to enjoy a nice holiday meal will soon gather around the table with those we love. In my family, we typically have all the usual delights, from the glistening holiday turkey to a dozen different sides. We’ll have a few non-traditional items too, including my aunt’s lasagna and whatever non-dairy, glutenfree

vegan dish my cousin from Oregon always brings. And, of course, if tradition holds, tucked away toward the back of the dessert table will be my annual offering of “I Tried Pie.” Named years ago after a comment made by a kind-hearted, wellmeaning relative — “Oh, well, dear, I can see what you were trying to do” — some version of I-Tried-Pie has been appearing on our family Thanksgiving menu every year for nearly a decade. The actual ingredients and construction of the dessert is always different, but the general concept remains the same: a recipe is chosen that requires a tremendous amount of skill and patience to make, and then is executed atrociously by yours truly. Is it overconfidence on my part? Perhaps. I don’t bake particularly well and I don’t speak

French, so it would logically follow that to attempt an impossibly finicky French dessert would take an enviable — or laughable— level of chutzpah. I have always blamed Martha (as in Stewart) for my very first finalcourse catastrophe, though the fault was entirely mine: as soon as I read the words “pate a choux,” I should have cut and run. Over the years, I have botched brûlée and murdered meringue. The offering isn’t always “pie” in the literal sense, but it is almost always a disaster. My tarte tropézienne? Epic fail. The poire belle hélène from 2007? A crime de cuisine. Of one year’s twisted and tortured pain au chocolat, a cousin remarked wryly that at least the first part appeared to be accurate. Please rest assured, most of these attempts don’t taste bad — shoehorn enough sugar, butter

and cream into a recipe and you’re going to come out with something at least edible (and probably even delicious). My offerings just typically offer far more to laugh at than to look at. I have toyed for several years with the idea of ordering something from a fancy bakery and passing it off as my own, just to see what would happen. I haven’t done it, partly because I harbor the odd suspicion that my family might actually be disappointed if I simply threw in the holiday towel. I’m going to keep trying, not because I enjoy failure, but because I champion the idea that anything is possible given enough patience, practice and YouTube videos. After all, considering last year’s attempt at croquembouche — which essentially looked like The Hindenburg, recast as a dessert — there is really nowhere to go but up.

For new Relay chair, fight is a personal one Tracie Grady Contributing columnist

This September I was asked by a wonderful group of ladies to lead them in their battle against cancer. Although it took some convincing they lovingly “twisted my arm” to “take the leap” and agree to be the 2019 Relay For Life of Goochland Event Team Leader. This decision did not come lightly, but the saying goes “give a busy person a job to do, to get it done” (or something like that). My days are filled with work and many of my evenings with a bowling league, choir practice, a part-time job, and my weekends often filled with my joyous niece and nephew participating in fun activities. I love it all and love to stay busy. I thrive in “to do lists.” Like all of you I have been touched by cancer with the loss of several family members and friends. FUNding for a cure is a passion for me. Through the great research ACS is funding I’m hopeful this will come in my lifetime and my niece and nephew’s lifetime. We want to have no one have to hear the words “you have cancer” again. Part of the pull on my “heart strings” to take on this role is that my 27-year-old cousin was diagnosed with Stage IVb Metastatic Melanoma in June. He’s fighting the good fight and is striving to win the battle (21 percent reduction in tumors since June). I want to aid in the discovery of a cure for him as he leads others to find Faith through him and his fight. This year I will FUNdraise and walk for him. As this year’s Event Team Leader, I would like to hear your story. Yes, anyone in the Goochland community who wants to share how cancer has touched your life. Please send me a message with what has pulled you to Relay For Life or let see Relay > page 11

Goochland defense stifles Cavaliers By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

PALMYRA – While most of us are relaxing and enjoying a food-filled holiday this Thursday, the Goochland Bulldogs will hit the practice field preparing for a rematch with Poquoson, the team that ended Goochland’s playoff run last year. “It feels great,” said lineman Jamal Carter. “Coming out after eating all day and playing a football game on Friday. … It’s always a blessing.” After posting a 21-0 win over King William in Round 2 of the Region 2A playoffs, the Bulldogs will host Poquoson this week with a shot at States on the line. “It will be Wing-T against Wing T,” Bulldog coach Alex Fruth said after the win. “They are a little more traditional than us so we’ll see.” The Bulldogs found themselves in a defensive struggle against the Cavaliers as the game – which was played at Fluvanna County High School because of poor field conditions at Goochland – began. The fast artificial-turf surface at Fluvanna aided the Bulldogs’ effort. “It’s the best thing we could have done,” Fruth said. “The change played to our strengths.” Devin McCray found pay dirt in the second quarter on a 36-yard quarterback keeper, one of several runs for the junior quarterback. “We are asking him to do more each week and he’s really maturing,” Fruth said. “We even asked him to option in and out of some plays and he did.” When Quincy Snead took the second half kickoff, made a cut to the middle and sprinted 98 yards for a touchdown, the

Left, King Willliam wide receiver Jamir Johnson (2) can’t stand to watch as four Goochland defenders celebrate after the Cavaliers’ late fourth quarter fourth-down pass falls incomplete.

14-0 deficit seemed insurmountable with the Bulldog defense stiffening. “I took the kickoff, saw the hole open up and just took flight,” Snead said. “I thank the guys up front for getting me

that touchdown.” Connor Popielarz raced 38 yards for a final fourth-quarter score that all but turned out the lights for the Cavs, making the final 21-0. Goochland’s defensive line

turned in another stellar performance with Jamal Carter and Jacob Massey anchoring that effort. Because of it, a usually dependable Cavalier passing game quickly disintegrated as quarterback Lance Alfonso

was often running for his life and many of his rushed passes fell incomplete. The steady pressure from the defensive line also allowed the Goochland secondary to jump routes and take away the

crossing lanes. Senior lineman Jacob Massey spent much of the evening in the Cavaliers backfield, and said the steady pressure helped the overall defensive effort especially with the linebackers and the secondary. “We get as much people off them as possible and keep the line on us,” Massey said. “It opens a lot of opportunities for the linebackers to do great things for us.” He also credited his teammates and noted the success is a team effort. Fruth agreed. “We are fortunate to have depth at defensive line,” he said. “We are able to rotate players in and it really paid off in the third quarter see Defense > 8

Above, Goochland quarterback Devin McCray (7) takes off on a scamper for firstdown yardage in the Bulldogs’ 21-0 victory over King William in a Region 2A quarterfinal at Fluvanna County High School Friday night. Left, Goochland defenders Jamal Carter (54) and Khalil Holman (5) wrap up Cavalier running back Kolbe Jorgensen (7). Top right, Goochland defender Will Stratton (81) levels King William running back Marc Gresham. Photo by Joel Klein

Right, King William wide receiver Kolby Anderson (18) seems to have beaten Goochland defender Kameron Holman for a touchdown in the first quarter, but Anderson’s foot comes down just out of bounds for no points. The play was the closest the Cavaliers would come to a score.

Defense continued from >8 when a lot of their kids were going both ways.” Fruth credited the defense and special teams for their efforts and said the kickoff

touchdown as something long overdue saying “this week we finished it off.” Fruth also was impressed with the unified effort of his players. “This is a good team win. Defensively, we did a lot of things well as a team. This is one of those games, as I look

back on it, I’m not going to have a bunch of names pop out at me. I felt like every time I looked up there was somebody else contributing.” Snead said that sense of team makes all the difference. “We started slow but the defense picked it up and then

we started running,” Snead said. “I give all the credit to those guys up front. They work hard. Without them, none of our running backs would be able to get where they need to go.” Snead said he planned on enjoying this win for a short

while and then getting ready for the Region finals next week. “I’ll enjoy this win for a little while, then think about next week,” the junior said. Fruth, on the other hand, seems to be focused on the next step, and a shot at redemption against a team that bested

them in the playoffs last year. “Since day one when I was hired we’ve talked about a couple of people and they’re one of the conversations we’ve had a lot.” Game time is 7 p.m. Friday at Goochland.

AmazonSmile initiative will once again benefit GoochlandCares Contributed report

This holiday season, Amazon.com is supporting many charitable organizations including GoochlandCares through its online AmazonSmile Shopping Center. For purchases made online at http://smile.amazon. com/ch/54-1967650, Amazon. com will donate 0.5 percent of the price of each eligible AmazonSmile purchase to GoochlandCares. “Amazon is offering a convenient way for you to help your Goochland neighbors in need during the holidays without ever leaving your home,” said Sally Graham, Executive Director of GoochlandCares. “This is a great opportunity to

do holiday shopping while at the same time giving back in our community.” AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way to support local and national charitable organizations at no cost to the customer. Prices and selection are the same as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to GoochlandCares. Shoppers are encouraged to visit AmazonSmile on Black Friday (Nov. 23) and CyberMonday (Nov. 26). November 27, 2018 is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.
