BOS: Alvarez tweet did not violate county conduct rules
Late musician remembered for both talent and generosity Southern Ambition founder spent decades entertaining fans around Central Virginia area
By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Nearly two months after a tweet sent by a Goochland County supervisor made headlines across the country, the county Board of Supervisors has officially declared the matter closed. During the afternoon session of the board’s Nov. 7 meeting, chairman Ken Peterson asked that the board vote to discuss publicly — rather than privately, as it was originally scheduled to be addressed — a complaint that had been submitted to the board concerning District 2 supervisor Manuel Alvarez. At issue was a tweet sent ALVAREZ from Alvarez’s personal Twitter account on Oct. 2, in which some later said he appeared to advocate the shooting of protesters. see Alvarez > 2

Ruckersville man charged after high-speed chase, crash in Goochland County A Ruckersville man has been hit with numerous charges stemming from an attempt to elude a State Trooper last Saturday. Cody Allen Baker, 30, has been charged with reckless driving by speed, felony driving under the influence of alcohol, driving on a revoked license (DUI related), two counts of failure to stop at a stop sign, and failure to stop at a red light. According to Sgt. Keeli L. Hill with the Virginia State Police, on Nov. 24 at 10:31 p.m. a State Police Trooper observed a 2002 Chevrolet
S10 pickup truck driven by a male subject, traveling eastbound on 1-64 at a high rate of speed. The trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop with his emergency equipment activated, but the driver refused to stop. The trooper pursued the Chevrolet pickup to southbound Route 288 until the Chevrolet crashed off of Route 6 and Creekmore Road at approximately 10:39 p.m. Baker was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. —Roslyn Ryan

Alvarez continued from >1 “With one reload, I can take 34 of them. But my guess is one will be sufficient,” Alvarez wrote in response to a news report that protestors had attacked Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.) in his office. While Alvarez quickly apologized for the tweet, which he said had been a poor attempt at humor, and soon after deleted his Twitter account, the resulting uproar led some to suggest that Alvarez should consider stepping down. In advance of the Nov. 7 discussion on whether Alvarez’s behavior had violated the county’s Standards of Conduct for board members, several county residents approached the podium to speak on Alvarez’s behalf. Goochland Sheriff Jim Agnew called Alvarez one of the most “engaging, responsive
and effective local leaders” he has ever worked with, while county Treasurer Pam Johnson detailed how Alvarez had stood up for her when she came under public scrutiny years ago. Goochland resident Anne Rockecharlie called him “a super star,” and thanked Alvarez for his service. Peterson then, as procedure required, polled each board member as to whether Alvarez had violated the Standards of Conduct. With the exception of Alvarez, who abstained, each board member replied “no” when asked. Declaring the matter officially closed, Peterson described the process leading up the vote as “uncomfortable to say the least,” but stressed that he was pleased with the transparency of the process and the effort the board had made to “listen very closely” to residents concerning the issue.

Naloxone workshop set for Dec. 6 Class will offer tips on use of life-saving spray By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Naloxone, a compound given as a nasal spray to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, has saved countless lives since widespread use of the product began in response to the opioid crises in the United States. Anyone interested in learning how to administer Naloxone is encouraged to attend a free training session from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 6 at the Goochland Library (3075 River Road W.). Farm Bureau family gathers to honor former board president The Goochland County Farm Bureau hosted a Member Appreciation Day on Friday, Nov. 9, dedicating the event in memory of late Board President Steven Bostic. Bostic served as the Goochland Farm Bureau Board President from 2002 until December of 2017, when he suddenly passed away. The Goochland Farm Bureau recently had a gazebo built in Bostic’s memory and invited his family, friends, co-Board members, and fellow Goochland Farm Bureau Members to join in the dedication while sharing a moment of silence for Bostic and his family. Pictured above, in the gazebo, are Bostic’s son, Jacob, his wife, Stephanie, and their two daughters, Makinley, 4, and Hayley, 6 months, along with the Goochland County Farm Bureau Board Members.
Could hitting the road ease country’s woes? By Roslyn Ryan Editor
As we approach the end of another year in which Americans didn’t seem to do a whole lot in terms of bridging what has been described as the vast social and political chasm that divides red and blue, black and white, left and right
and so on, I think it might finally be time for drastic measures. Ladies and gentlemen, I think we need to take a road trip. I came upon this idea a few weeks ago after rereading an old favorite, John Steinbeck’s “Travels With Charley.” In the book, the Nobel-winning author embarks on a road trip across the United States

The overzealous and anxious Christmas decorations that adorn all of our shopping areas are a sure sign that the holiday season is upon us. Almost every retailer in America will soon be reminding us that it’s the time for giving, and the true spirit of the season lies wraps in tiny shiny boxes or in new automobiles wrapped with big red bows. The true spirit of giving lives in the numerous charities that perform year-round good deeds but depend on the kindness of spirited shoppers to provide the bulk of their annual donations. It seems many do take that spirit of charity and giving quite seriously, and provide what they can for those less fortunate. It appears the sound of jingle bells and Christmas carols reminds us to think of others and dig a little deeper to help the downtrodden. The whole atmosphere is a signal of a society that cares, that answers the call of those in need, and is aware of those who may be suffering especially at this time of year. But, this story is not about those 99 percent of human beings who feel the spirit or recognize the need. No, this tale takes place in the minds of the few in our world who see every kindness as an opportunity to exploit or get rich quick. A trio of above described individuals hatched a scheme during the holidays last year that left hundreds of innocent contributors scratching their heads and wondering exactly how low people can stoop so low. A couple paired with a homeless man to tell a heartwarming holiday story that netted the trio see Giving > page 7

Giving continued from >6 more than $400,000 on a GoFundMe page. The woman told newspapers and television stations how the homeless man gave her his last $20 after she ran out of gas and he spotted her on the side of the road. She asked for donations to obtain housing and a car for the down-on-his-luck good samaritan. Hundreds donated immediately and the account expanded during last year’s holiday season. Turns out the couple did meet around the time of the contrived incident, but the actual get together took place at a New Jersey casino, where police say the scheme was devised. Days later the GoFundMe account was established and the money began pouring in. The couple made appearances on television, including Good Morning America.
Because there is some justice in this world, the trio’s undoing came at their own hands. It seems the three-way split was the root of a dispute that finally resulted in the homeless man suing the couple for his share of the money. Police say the fraud would have likely not been discovered had the suit not been filed, alerting officials. The homeless man said he didn’t get his cut, and investigators found little of the money remained, the bulk of it spent on gambling, new cars, expensive handbags and fancy trips. Police said people who donated to the GoFundMe will be reimbursed, so that’s one of the few positive results of this story. Oh, yeah, there’s also the fact that the trio are charged with felonies that could net them five to 10 in prison. And one more thing, they’ll probably spend quite a few holiday

seasons behind bars. And, finally, when they are released, they will have to repay every penny of the illgotten gains. The damage from acts like this especially selfish and egregious betrayal is the damage down, although immeasurable, to the thousands of people who do have a story to tell and may need a helping hand. Most of us won’t let the bad actions of a few tarnish the spirit of the season, or charity in general. But, sadly, a few will be reluctant to believe the next heartwarming, tearjerking story. It’s our good nature to rise above, forget and forgive and continue to do the right thing. That’s the way most of us are wired. As for that trio in New Jersey, who knows or cares what could have gone wrong to produce such a vile and deceitful result? But, they’ll have some time to ponder the question.

Many years ago during college a good friend and I decided that we would drive to Boston one holiday break, simply because we’d never been there and it seemed like just the kind of adventure we craved. One week, two blown tires, and

Fortunately, the years that followed did offer the opportunity to study, live and work in places far different from
my own Virginia hometown, and to form deep friendships with people of many different backgrounds. It is perhaps the thing in my life — other than my family — for which I am most thankful. It also is why I’ve always encouraged any young people I’ve met over the years
— particularly those I’ve been blessed to work with through various mentorship programs — to never shy away from any opportunity to get out of their own small circles and just go. If you have any holiday trips planned for the final weeks of 2018, I hope they are wonderful, enriching, eyeopening experiences.
I hope you come back renewed, but also inspired to look beyond your own worldview. And if by chance you do have a magical, perspectiveshifting experience along the way, I hope you’ll share it with us here at The Gazette. We sure do love a good story. Safe travels!
passed away on Aug. 29, shortly after being diagnosed with liver cancer. Those who knew him, over 400 of whom attended a Celebration of Life in his honor last September, describe the Goochland native as a man who worked hard and lived to play
music, a largely self-taught singer who would bring down the house with his band and then refuse to leave until he’d spoken to every single fan who’d come out to see them in Amelia, or Powhatan, or Cumberland or wherever Southern Ambition happened to be playing.
Often he’d play a show after a full day working as a truck driver. “He would be dog-tired, but you’d never know it,” remembered Allen’s widow, Tammie, who first met her future husband when he played a show at the Crazy Horse in Richmond in 1984. “Music just wound him up,” said Tammie. “It just made him happy.” Lately, Tammie finds herself looking through the thousands of photos taken at countless Southern Ambition shows over the years, including the many played to raise money for organizations ranging from youth athletic leagues to local fire and rescue companies. Plenty of people rang in the New Year with Allen and his band over the years, Tammie said, and Southern Ambition played more birthday, wedding and anniversary celebrations
then she can even guess. Legend had it that Allen started the band after making a bet, though the exact details about that story have sadly been lost to history. What is undeniable, however, is that music was what fueled Allen’s life. Among his favorite artists were the celebrated icons of country music — Brooks and Dunn, Charlie Daniels, and, above all, Ronnie Millsap — but he also loved rock and Gospel music as well. There was little in the way of artifice when it came to Mike: If he looked like a proudly-scruffy truck driver with a penchant for playing hard and staying out late, it’s because, according to those who knew him, that’s exactly what he was. He adored his family and doted on his children and grandchildren, and one of his life-long dreams was realized the day Tammie accompanied
him to take possession of his new Harley Davidson. His daughter Tina recalled her father as someone who was most himself when he was on stage, though she insisted that to call Allen simply a singer wouldn’t be quite accurate. “He was really a true entertainer,” said Tina, pointing out her father’s ability to make everyone at his shows feel welcome. “He remembered everybody, and he always wanted you to feel like you were a part of it.” Brenda Powers, who knew Allen from the time they were high school classmates, said she couldn’t remember a time when he wasn’t bringing a smile to someone’s face, either with his music or his personality. At his shows, “He made you feel like you were the only one there,” Powers said. “There are so many wonderful memories of Mike, and everyone has their own. He just made people happy.” When news of Allen’s death was shared on Facebook last August, the response was both swift and heartbroken. Many posted memories of hearing Southern Ambition play, but just as many offered their thanks for a man who touched their lives when he was offstage as well. To Tammie, it brings a measure of comfort that her late husband impacted so many people, and also that his memory will live on through both his music and the countless friends he made while playing it. “Anybody that knew him,” she said, “will never forget him.”

Bulldogs get revenge, region title By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
PALMYRA – While most of us rushed to shopping malls to grab that last Black Friday deal or downed that last turkey sandwich, a group of dedicated and determined Goochland Bulldogs boarded buses for a short trip to Fluvanna County High School and a chance to redeem a defeat that ended their season last year. Awaiting them on the nearfreezing turf was familiar nemesis Poquoson, which earned a spot in the regional by defeating Amelia. The Islanders ended the Bulldogs’ season last year by beating Goochland 21-10 in a Region 2A final. Friday, in another Region 2A final, the Bulldogs returned the favor with a 21-14 win over Poquoson. In a rematch that looked evenly matched, Goochland struck first when quarterback Devin McCray plunged over from 2 yards out in the first period, giving the Bulldogs a short-lived 7-0 lead. answered that score with an 8-yard run, leveling the score at 7-7, and the Islanders scored again midway through the second quarter when Bailey Green ran 18 yards for the goahead score. Poquoson tried to add to that lead late in the first half but McCray ended that threat with an interception, and the teams headed to the locker rooms with the Islanders up
14-7. The Islanders maintained their lead until the fourth quarter when a botched punt set up the Bulldogs in Poquoson territory and McCray covered the final 10 yards to knot the score at 14-all. When Kindrick Braxton picked an errant pass and gave the Bulldogs a final opportunity from the Islander 35-yard line, it looked like it might
be Goochland’s last chance to take the lead. McCray and Perry Snead Johnson took full advantage as McCray found the slippery receiver for a 29-yard touchdown strike to give the Bulldogs their first lead with four minutes to go in the game. Goochland’s defense shut down Poquoson’s final drive, stopping the Islanders on a crucial fourth down.
Coach Alex Fruth got his first title since taking the head coaching job earlier this year and noted that toughness and tenacity of his team was the key. “The offense did enough at the right times to make some key plays,” Fruth said. “I thought the touchdown pass was a great example of our toughness.” “Perry SneadJohnson couldn’t get a clean
release, but fought through it.” That wasn’t the only challenge on the key play of the game. “Then, the defensive back had outside leverage on him taking away the called route, so he just took it vertical and Devin did a great job of seeing it happen and putting the ball on the right spot,” Fruth said. But, it also was a dependable, tough defense that came up with big plays at the right times. “The defense did a solid job across the board,” Fruth said. “We gave up yards, but not big plays. We also did a great job taking away their play-action passing game.” Overall, the coach said the game had the sort of ups and downs he expected as the competition stiffens each week of the playoffs. “I thought the defense did a great job of handling the run game of Poquoson. We bent, but didn’t break,” Fruth said. The coach said every aspect of his team contributed to this important regional championship, and the win was a case of see Revenge > 10
Goochland boys bring experience, drive to new season By Ellis Hopson Contributing Writer
The Goochland High School boys basketball team sits in an enviable position heading into the 2018-19 season. Coming off a 21-5 season and a state quarterfinal appearance last year, much of the band is getting back together for this season. The Bulldogs
return four of their five starters from a year ago, including four-year starter and All-State guard Deion Harwood, and second team All-Region player Quincy Snead at point guard. With a solid, experienced core returning and the contributions of some exciting young players, Goochland has its sights set to advance even further than last year’s squad. While the level of continuity for the Bulldogs is high, one
challenge the team will face early in the season is how they manage the return of players from the football field. “Having continuity and team chemistry is really important in having a successful season in any sport. We always face the challenge of getting our football guys back in the mix and in basketball shape,” said Goochland coach Preston Gordon. “Two of our four returning starters, Quincy
Snead and Kameron Holman, play football, so getting those two in basketball mode will be key to our success. We have enough guys to help fill their shoes, which will help save legs and be important down the stretch of season.” One player who will be on the hardwood from the start of year is senior Deion Harwood, who will have high expectations upon him after playing at an All-State level last season.
However, Gordon believes that Harwood has improved during the offseason. “Deion has really worked hard this off season to improve his ability to get to the rim, and play above the rim! He is going to be a tough player to defend, because he is a knockdown shooter from 2 to 5 feet behind the 3-point line. Now he is able to get by his defender, avoid the second defender, and finish at the rim,” Gordon said.
“Deion set the bar high last year, but I am expecting him to knock down shots, attack the rim to create better shots for his teammates and himself, be a lock-down defender, and be a leading rebounder on the team.” Harwood will also be chasing a place in the Goochland history books. He is 143 points see Drive > 10

Goochland girls hungry for continued successes
will look to continue building all experienced team going into on it this season. the 2018-2019 season due to “I feel like we have an over- their overall progression dur-
ing last season,” he said. The Bulldogs have guard Anjelyn Carter and forwards Lanaysia Gonzalez and Justice Tibbs returning as starters. All three are also seniors, and will bring leadership to the team. That trio is joined by fellow senior guard Allison Mohar, who is a new team captain this season. Having a veteran squad returning will also allow Goochland to be versatile on both ends of the court. “We really don’t have a particular style of play,” Harris said. “We can play up tempo, or half court. We look forward
guard Kameron Holman and freshman forward J.B. Bell. Holman, one of the Bulldogs’ returning starters, is a player who will be looking to take his game up a notch. “Kameron is a special athlete, who can take over a game any time that he wants. His ability to get to the rim with his quickness and knock-down pull-up jumpers are going to be key to his success. I believe that Kameron can take his game to another level, if he sets his mentality on defense that no one can get by him,” Gordon said. “The sky is the limit for this young man and he has good leaders to share the floor with in Quincy and Deion, but he can also be a leader on the floor.” As a freshman, Bell will be looking to bring a dynamic post presence to the Bulldogs and learn from the experienced players he will share the court with. “J.B. has already made great strides from the pre-season to the early part of practice. At 6’ 6”, J.B. is going to be tough
They have to be able to keep guys in front of them, be quick to help their teammate, and rebound the ball,” Gordon said. “Our entire coaching staff does a great job game planning, and I am thankful to have such a hard working group of coaches that are committed to the success of our players and program.” With so many pieces returning and exciting new elements being introduced, expectations will be high for the Bulldogs. Gordon did not shy away from them, but also preached short-term focus. “All of the guys in our program have high expectations to get back to the state playoff, but they want to go further. We all want to play in Richmond for a state title, but we have to focus on one game at a time,” he said. Goochland opens the season Thursday when it travels to Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Ellis Hopson can be reached at sports@goochlandgazette. com.

Coming off a successful 2017-18 season, Goochland High School’s girls basketball team is not satisfied. A 19-6 regular season record paved the way for a regional quarterfinal appearance, but the Bulldogs have their sights set even higher this year. With three starters and seven total players returning for 2018-19, Goochland will have continuity and experience on its side. Bulldogs coach James Harris recognizes how much experience his team has, and
Drive continued from >9 away from 1,000 career points scored, a milestone that has not been reached by a Bulldog player since 2000. Another player Goochland will heavily rely upon is junior point guard Quincy Snead. “Quincy is a second team All-Region A player, who should have been on the first team. He makes us go and is our floor general. Most people do not know how much he leads us on the floor and in the locker room,” Gordon said. “He is the smallest guy on the floor, but he has the biggest heart and more fight than anyone. The grit and intensity that he plays with on both ends of the floor helps us win battles against those tough opponents. I love his passion for competing.” While Harwood and Snead will bring veteran leadership, Goochland will also be counting on production from a pair of young players in sophomore

for teams to guard; the fact that he can knock down the 3-pointer makes him a lethal weapon! On the defensive end he is going to alter and block a lot of shots, which is key for our defense. He is going to help limit opportunities for other teams to have second chances at scoring, because he is so long and athletic,” Gordon said. “As a freshman J.B. is like a sponge, soaking up advice the coaches and veteran players share with him on different scenarios. J.B. will get tougher, more physical, and comfortable with the players around him, which is going to help make us a powerful team.” Bell’s presence only figures to boost what was already an excellent defensive team. Goochland held its opponents to 45 points or less on 18 occasions last season, a trend Gordon attributes to the players and assistant coaches. “Our key to our success is having our guys buy in to what we are trying to sell. They believe in our defensive scheme and they believe in each other.
to mixing things up a bit this season.” One of the Bulldogs’ main goals for the year is to develop the ability to compete with any opponent they encounter. “We want to have the mentality that we can compete with any school, regardless of their classification. Whether the school is 2A or 5A, we as a team can
now have the mindset of playing each team with the same mentality.” Goochland opened the season Wednesday night (after this edition went to press) against a Class 5 opponent, Douglas Freeman. Ellis Hopson can be reached at sports@goochlandgazette. com.

nent that has been talked about off and on since the day I got hired,” Fruth said. “This meant a ton for those seniors and other guys that lost to them last year. And for me it was about getting us to the point where we could have this opportunity for the boys to take advantage of. It was awesome.” The emotional win left the coach searching for the right words after the game. “I was at a loss of words at the end of the game,” Fruth said. He is, however, fluent, when it comes to what it will take to advance in next week’s semifinal. “East Rockingham is really explosive on offense,” Fruth said. “Their quarterback and skill players make some big plays each week.” Truth knows the effort it takes to complete an undefeated season and advance to the fourth round of the playoffs. “They are 13-0, you don’t get there by luck,” he said. They are the number 1 seed for a reason in region B.” Goochland heads back to those same buses this Friday for the trip to Elkton and a shot at a state final. continued from >9 players doing just enough to win. And no turnovers, that’s priceless during playoff time. “Special teams did a good job of not allowing any big plays, but we need to clean up some things,” Fruth said. “The offense struggled, but realized we didn’t need to win every play, but just enough of them to make something happen,” he continued. “It comes down to the fact that we didn’t turn the ball over, but they did and we took advantage of the short fields they created.” The celebration is shortlived as the team prepares to face an undefeated East Rockingham team that also has its share of impressive numbers. “The coaches enjoyed the win until Saturday when we started looking at East Rock tape, Fruth said. “The boys get until Sunday when we start sending out the next opponent’s tape for them to see.” East Rockingham has been on the team’s radar since early in the season, and Fruth knows it’s not an easy assignment. But, he also didn’t underestimate the importance of the Islander win and settling a yearlong score. “This was a game/oppo-
