After eight years serving as the head of Goochland County’s Fire-Rescue operation, Chief William “Bill” MacKay will be leaving the role on Jan. 31, 2019. Reached by phone on Monday, MacKay said he has not yet decided if he will completely retire or continue to work in some capacity, but explained that he felt it was “the right time” to make the change. He cited a desire to spend more time with family as a key factor in his decision, pointing out the challenges of maintaining the 24-7 commitment the MACKAY role requires. Praising MacKay both for his leadership and for the improvements he brought to

A 1993 graduate of Goochland High School, Creasey said always felt it was his calling to help the community in some capacity, whether

it was through volunteer work or in his role as a law enforcement officer. He also knows, he said, that serving as the county’s top law enforcement official brings with it challenges that require the ability to both deal with current issues and prepare for future changes brought on by factors like population growth and development. Creasey said in an interview with the Gazette last month that he’d like to see the department fully staffed, and also to maintain the strong cooperative relationships Goochland has with law enforcement operations in the surrounding counties. Creasey joined the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office in 1995 and held the positions of dispatcher, deputy, corporal and a tactical operations team member before being promoted to his current rank of sergeant, a position he has held for over 10 years. Creasey holds a Master of Arts in Human ServicesCriminal Justice degree from Liberty University, a bachelor s degree in Criminal Justice from Liberty University and an Associate of Applied Science in Administration of Justice from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. To Creasey, the fact that

Goochland ‘V3’ certification highlights efforts on behalf of veterans by the Virginia Department of Veteran Services that works with companies and state and local government agencies across the Commonwealth to promote the recruitment, hiring, and retention of military veterans in the workforce. Since its inception in 2012, more than 38,000 veterans have been hired as a result of the efforts of the V3 Program and its partner employers. “The County is committed to helping assure that those who served our nation find jobs in the civilian workforce as they transition out of the

military,” said Budesky. “We are doing our part to assure that Virginia is the best state in America for veterans and their families to live, work, and thrive.” Achievement of the V3 certification demonstrates Goochland County’s ongoing commitment to and recognition of active duty military and veterans. Just a month ago in November the Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a resolution declaring Goochland County as a Purple Heart County, honoring the sacrifices and service

of men and women who are recipients of the Purple Heart Medal. Virginia is home to over 725,000 veterans, and with the unique skills and training they received while serving our country, these men and

North Pole calling: Residents make holiday merrier By Roslyn Ryan Editor

For many busy professionals, clocking out at the end of the workday means a temporary reprieve from the long list of important phone calls they have to make. Recently in Goochland, however, one group of residents found themselves working the phones well past the time many of us have already hung up and headed for home.

We’re going to be a bit coy here as we describe just what this merry band of cold callers was up to as they gathered one evening last week at the Central High School Complex, but let’s just say that there were quite a few young Goochland residents who drifted off to sleep on Thursday night certain that they had shared a few quality phone moments with the Jolly Old Elf himself. File this one, dear readers, under the heading of Things That Only A True Grinch Would Not Find Heartwarming. In fact, the thought of this

I try to avoid the Christmas rush as much as possible, but, inevitably, I find myself stuck in some line I’d tried my best to avoid. As I waited at a popular clothing store to purchase some traditional products for my daughters, I couldn’t help but notice the frazzled looks on the folks surrounding me. The line moved at a snail’s pace, and the lady beside me turned and said, “Christmas gets harder each year.” I simply nodded not really considering the comment, and it didn’t really strike me until I reached my car many minutes later. My car engine had only been on for seconds when I heard a huge bang behind me. Turns out, one of those stressed out shoppers had pulled out of a parking spot without looking and banged into a passing SUV. The whole incident was none of my business, but the location of the accident blocked me from pulling out of my parking spot. It was then I really started to wonder if Christmas is getting harder. Making the perfect Christmas isn’t easy by any estimate, but can the expectations of the season actually deflect from the joy and happiness associated with the holiday season? I thought of the many friends I have who begin their preparations months in advance for the biggest holiday of the year. They make sure each stocking is perfectly stuffed, or everyone gets that most wanted gift. That’s not our style around here, and a little last-minute shopping is part of our holiday tradisee Holidays > page 11

North All-Stars takes 4-2 lead in six-game Big River Rivalry series By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

ASHLAND - Punts were prevalent and flags flew onto the field, but Lee-Davis’ Zach Lass dug deep, found the heat he needed in his arm on a soggy Saturday afternoon and connected with dynamic Highland Springs receiver Antwane Wells to lift the North-Stars past the South 25-13 in the Big River Rivalry high school all-star football game. Wells earned MVP honors in the sixth

edition of the Greater RVA region’s high school showcase, which annually features the clash of standout seniors from North and South of the James River at the end of each high school season. Wells made five catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Ky’mon Pope of Dinwiddie was named the South All-Stars’ MVP. He carried the ball 25 times for a fiery 140 yards on the rainy afternoon and added 51 yards, passing on four completions against two interceptions and a rushing TD. Lee-Davis’ Lass completed five passes

for 144 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Highland Springs’ D’Vonte Waller completed nine passes for 109 yards, a touchdown and one interception. Goochland’s Sam Brooks picked up four solo tackles, including a tackle for loss, and an assist for the North. Powhatan’s Jacob Dowdy led the way on a TFL for the South. “I just came off the ball, read the play, see Big River > 8

I can’t tell you when I read my first-ever story in a newspaper, but I do remember reading a special section dedicated to the start of the 2001 NASCAR Cup season in, I believe, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, and it was from there that I began reading sports articles both in print and online. It was an emotional season that year on the NASCAR Cup Circuit (Dale Earnhardt lost his life in the final turn on the final lap of the Daytona 500, won by a driver Michael Waltrip, who he had just hired to drive for his team). Maybe it was because I was coming of age (12), I began writing my own alternative NASCAR season starring my classmates, and it was complete with play-by-play race recaps written from a sports broadcaster’s point-of-view, schedules, points standings and news articles before and after each race. I also did that for football, but not as seriously. But — because I had taken to doing this kind of writing at a young age — my parents persuaded me to write for a newspaper. So at 13, I had my first two articles — recaps of the Rappahannock Raiders’ varsity and JV basketball teams from when they hosted James Monroe — published in a 2002 edition of the Northern Neck News. For whatever reason, whether it was because of nerves or just because I was in middle school, I didn’t write any more stories for the NNN, and I eventually moved to Norfolk where I was a part of the Maury High School monthly newspaper my senior year. Unfortunately, that year’s class was plagued by production issues, so we only published four editions. I remembered reading the University of Mary Washington newspaper back when it was called the Bullet to get a sense of its style before I even started attending classes there. The other career path I had weighed throughout my high school years was becoming a teacher, which my parents eventually persuaded me to pursue in college. It did not work out. After graduation I found myself back in Warsaw with a college degree but no master’s in education. It was a bumpy road until I walked into the Northern Neck News office in Warsaw one day just to see what kind of writing opportunities they had. The editor at the time agreed to let me freelance for him, see Vandeloecht > 7

It’s been a whirlwind since. When I became the editor of the NNN I was able to get back into sports writing, and I found my calling. I was excited about being able to show in written form how an athlete executed a play on the court and then how he or she reflected on that play, that game or that season. I enjoyed getting to go to signings and talk to the players and the coaches, and I found joy in seeing how much a contest or simply just playing the game meant to a player or to a coach. I’ve been extremely fortunate in that everywhere I’ve worked has been a sportsdriven region. The Northern Neck has been a baseball community throughout my life, and the parents and readers absolutely loved seeing their local teams and kids in the paper. Sports still remain one of the central unifying factors in bringing people together in one setting in that area, so ensuring strong sports coverage was a necessity. I was glad to see that same passion for sports thriving in the Tri-Cities. So, because of that, I am very excited to be coming on board as the sports editor for Powhatan Today, Goochland Gazette and Cumberland Today to represent communities that I understand to be very passionate about their sports teams as well. I saw Powhatan base-

ball and Powhatan softball compete when I covered Dinwiddie, and — not only do I remember the softball team dominating — I remember the home crowd turnout for Powhatan’s games being strong. I also saw one of my favorite high school basketball games played when I went out to see the Powhatan boys basketball team compete against Monacan in its 2018-2019 season opener. Joe Basimile launched an inspired comeback to drive his Chiefs past the Indians 90-89 at the last literal second, but the Indians had a great opening showing, with Deven Van Natter commanding the floor, weaving his way past defenders with expert footwork and ball handling. Several other Powhatan teammates also found the basket from both up-close and afar. I also was impressed by the big, rocketing passes they could pull off with ease in that game. It might have not been a victory, but it was a great way to get introduced to one of the teams I’m excited to cover. It means a lot to me to have this opportunity to be able to report on sports in the Powhatan, Goochland and Cumberland communities to the best of my ability, and I look forward to working with the coaches and athletic directors and also highlighting both the achievements and the dedication of the players and teams. It’s my passion and my pleasure to show the readers and the world the great things that are coming out of the sports scene across the three counties, so feel free to reach out and let me know how I can help. I can be reached right now at nvandeloecht@powhatantoday.com.

Big River continued from >7 made the tackle,” Dowdy said. “It was a great opportunity, very fun, just glad to do it,” he said about playing in the allstar game: Representing Powhatan County on the South All-Stars were lineman Dowdy and running back Jacob Taylor from Powhatan High School and linemen Noa Hasty and Luke Freudenthal from BlessedSacrament Huguenot. Benedictine’s Tre Akande made an interception within the final 30 seconds of regulation. In addition to Goochland’s Brooks and Benedictine’s Akande, Benedictine lineman Cole Simon represented Goochland County on the North All-Stars. Hanover County’s representatives on the North team were Lee-Davis’ Lass and Colby Andrews, Atlee’s Tucker Bratton, Will Belvin and Isaiah and Isaac Abel, Patrick Henry’s Brandon Sullivan and Jack Keck and Hanover’s Justin Haynesworth and Edward Robinson. King William players on the North All-Stars were Eric Johnson and Tommy Riffe. The South led the North 7-0 after a first quarter that saw several punts fly through the air. The lone score in that stretch — a one-yard rush scored by Monacan’s Tanner Adams — capped a 77-yard drive that saw Dinwiddie’s Ky’mon “Peety” Pope lead his South All-Stars down the field. With his team down by seven, Atlee’s Isaac Abel fell on a fumble by the South team to

turn possession of the ball over to his North All-Stars’ offense with 8:39 to play in the second quarter. In the drive set up by Abel’s recovery, the North overcame penalties on the arm and legs of Highland Springs’ D’Vonte Waller to march the ball down to the South’s 26, as Waller zipped passes to Springers teammate Antwane Wells and Douglas Freeman’s Liam Simpson and delivered a screen pass to Springers teammate Tremayne Talbert, who sprinted down the right side to reach the first down marker and convert on 3rd and 15 from the South’s 41. Waller closed out the drive by letting loose a rocket that traveled into the hands of wide open receiver Simpson, who quickly reached the end zone upon making the catch to put the North on the scoreboard. The two-point-try, however, was unsuccessful, and the South stayed in the lead over the North 7-6. Atlee’s Tucker Bratton contributed a nifty run in which he spun his way past South defenders to gain three yards in his North team’s first scoring drive of the game. The North forced a punt with Collegiate’s Michael Brost defending against a deep pass, and Lee-Davis quarterback Zach Lass overcame early struggles in the pocket to lift his team ahead 12-7. Lass, who at that point had yet to make a completion, racked up 90 yards on two passes as he pushed his team towards midfield on a 31-yarder to Wells, then, after seeing his 43-yarder to Douglas Freeman’s Liam Simpson in the end zone get erased on a holding call, found

Wells again, this time for a 59-yard gem of a touchdown. Wells racked up the yards after making his second catch from Lass as he shifted past defenders to take the ball into the end zone. The North got the ball again to open the second half, but Powhatan’s Jacob Dowdy led the South’s defensive line in wrapping up the North’s Matt Johnson for a tackle for loss, and his teammates knocked a pass out of the North receiver’s hands before the receiver could secure the catch on the successive third down play to force the punt. That put the South’s offense, again led by Pope, back on the field, and Pope carved up chunks of rushing yards to move his team inside the North’s 30. But Devyn Coles, who made an interception in the first half, wrapped up Pope behind the line of scrimmage to turn the ball over to the North on downs. The North ended up punting it away, but Benedictine’s Tre Akande contributed a passdeflection, nearly picking off the throw up the middle to force 3rd and 13. The South’s short-lived drive ended in a punt after a screen pass fell incomplete. The North punted yet again, with Thomas Jefferson’s Keegan Vaughan booting the ball all the way to the South’s 15. Atlee’s Isaac Abel led the defensive line in collapsing onto the South’s quarterback for a nine-yard sack. The South tried to go deep on a big passing play, but Mills Godwin’s Will Shulleeta ran after the ball and hauled in the interception near the 40,

returning it all the way to the South’s nine yard line. The South, however, held the North to a field goal try, which was ruled no good. And then Pope, like he has all season, found a way. Taking the snap from his own 23, the Dinwiddie senior quarterback rolled out to his right and barreled down the sideline on an explosive 72-yard romp to propel his team past the North 13-12 in the closing seconds of the third quarter. The North, led by Waller, drove into the South’s territory, but Matoaca’s Xavier Addison picked off a deep pass near the end zone to return the ball to his offense. The South, however, was held to a punt from deep inside its own territory with the North receiving the ball around midfield. Lass delivered a 31-yarder to John Marshall’s Shoye Sampson, then used his feet to drive the North inside the South’s 15 on back-to-back carries. And then, after a penalty pushed the North back to the 18, Lass on fourth down aired out the pass to Wells in the right side of the end zone to again send his team ahead. Tremayne Talbert added an insurance touchdown for the North when he picked off a pass at his team’s 40, then returned it down the left field sideline and all the way to the house for a pick-six. The North forced a turnover on downs despite a sizeable last-ditch rushing effort by Pope on fourth down, and then controlled the remaining minutes from there. The North leads the South 4-2 all-time in the Big River Rivalry series.

Holidays continued from >6 tions. I would somehow feel like I’d missed a sure sign of the season if I didn’t end up in a mall surrounded by a horde of frantic last-minute shoppers. There’s certainly no doubt that once those gift lists have been submitted, I feel a bit overwhelmed at the prospect of finding those items. As the years have passed, I’ve learned a real appreciation for detail when it comes to shopping and the necessity of getting just the right thing, especially when it comes to teenagers.

I’ve learned that my choices sometimes don’t resemble theirs, and what I thought of as cool doesn’t come close in their minds. Even with those complications, I still try to keep it all in perspective, and, maybe too often, I find myself reminding my children that giving is more important than receiving and the true spirit of the season begins with charity. Does any of this mean making sure your home has the perfect Christmas is getting next to impossible? Probably not. I think back to my

Was creating the perfect Christmas really as easy as my parents made it look? I suspect not. Christmas as a child, and how the gifts I received always seemed like someone read my mind and delivered just the present I wanted.

Whether it was a shiny red bike, football helmet or that perplexing chemistry set, it all seemed almost ordained as the most exciting day of the year progressed. My last Christmas with my father stands out in my mind. During the weeks leading up to the big day, my parents had asked me a dozen times what I wanted, but I couldn’t decide and only hinted at a few items. Somehow, without the aid of big box stores or internet shopping, my parents came up with a selection of gifts that made believing in Santa Claus easy.

www.goochlandgazette.com

We spent most of that last Christmas together playing a gift he’d selected for me: an electric football game. I was too young to appreciate his perfect selection of gifts, but it was the hit of my holiday season. Was it really as easy as my parents made it look? I suspect not. Is Christmas really getting harder? I suppose it depends on what you’re looking for when it comes to holiday cheer. Somehow, the real joys of the season don’t require a trip to the mall or a long line of irritated shoppers. The warmth of

home, the glow of a Christmas tree in a candlelit room and the company of good friends and family remains the same today as it did on those modest yuletides of the past. Here’s hoping your holidays aren’t too busy, and you and your family enjoy the joy and love that comes alive during Christmas. And the peace and joy that may seem a little harder to attain do not dim the magic of your season. Remember, it’s the little things that make those lifelong memories. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

MacKay continued from >1 the county’s fire-rescue operation, County Administrator John Budesky noted that MacKay’s expertise will be greatly missed. Among the highlights of MacKay’s tenure have been the construction of the first county-built fire station--Fire Station 6 in Hadensville—and the establishment of standards for fire and emergency medical service (EMS) coverage and

response times. In response, career staffing to supplement volunteer coverage increased from 11 field providers in 2009 to 33 field providers in 2018. Fire-Rescue currently has a total of 37 firefighter positions. As a result, four of the county’s six stations now are regularly staffed with a minimum of two staff members, on a 24-hour basis. Response times have been reduced and coverage exists in eastern, central, and western portions of the county.

Under his leadership, firerescue has successfully integrated a combination volunteer and career staffed agency into a cohesive all-hazards department. In addition, the department established a career staff rank structure for officers, providing new leadership opportunities and responsibilities. The county has also increased compensation for career staff position, offering competitive pay. For his part, MacKay said that he truly appreciated the

people of Goochland, and their support of the county’s FireRescue department. “I wish to thank Goochland County for allowing me to serve in this capacity,” said MacKay. “For over eight years the department and it’s members have also enjoyed a supportive relationship with the community as well as elected and appointed officials and I am confident that will continue into the future.” During his tenure the county’s Insurance Services Office

Mounayar once again staged his holiday toy drive for children facing lengthy hospital stays, and churches across the county have welcomed all to join their congregations in celebrating the season. It has truly been a sight to behold. Mind you, I would hazard a guess that just about all of the

people involved in these efforts have their own Christmas lists, cooking duties and holiday travel arrangements to negotiate. And yet they have continued to come together and support their community, donating hour after hour to lift up their neighbors in need. As we count down the few

remaining days to Christmas this year, we here at the Goochland Gazette would like to share our warmest holiday wishes with all Goochland residents and thank them for continuing to inspire us. It is a privilege to be a part of such a giving community, and is truly the most cherished of Christmas gifts.
