As the Goochland County Board of Supervisors embarks on what promises to be an eventful year, the group will have a familiar face at the helm. On Jan. 2, the Board voted unanimously to elect District 2 Supervisor Manuel Alvarez Jr. as chairman and District 1 Supervisor Susan F. Lascolette as vice chair for 2019. Alvarez is serving as the board’s chairman for the second time. He most recently held the post in 2014. He succeeds District 5 Supervisor Ken Peterson in the position. “It is an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of Goochland County as Chair of the county board of supervisors,” said Alvarez. “I would like to thank Supervisor Peterson for his leadership over the past year and the Board of Supervisors for having trust in me to serve again as Chairman.

Above, Garden Club members Sue Weeks, left, Cheryl Nuckols and Martha Rogers toast the Goochland Garden Club’s 80th anniversay. Right, Garden Club member — and the event’s hostess — Leanora Johnson share some highlight’s from the club’s many years of service to Goochland.
Garden Club continued from >1 around the Goochland area and beyond, as well as other charitable endeavors. And if the dress code for meetings has been relaxed just a bit over the years — hats are gloves are no longer de rigueur, and more comfortable attire has largely replaced skirts and dresses — the passion for all things floral has not waned. To Leanora Johnson, who hosted the anniversary celebration at her Goochland home with help from club board members, the day held a particularly special meaning: not only has Johnson herself been a member of the club for many years, her mother, Leanora Stoneman, was a charter member back in 1938. It was on Sept. 21 of that year, when Stoneman was a young bride of 23, that the first meeting of the club’s 29 charter members was held at Goochland’s Rock Castle,
then the home of Mrs. James Osborne. Annual dues were just $1 a year back then, and carpooling was the preferred way to handle the fact that many of the members didn’t drive. Johnson, who wore her mother’s pearls and hat as she graciously hosted the afternoon anniversary tea with her husband Kirk, shared in her opening remarks that the elder Leanora had served in various roles with the club, but that her true passion was for floral arranging and wild flowers. She remained active in the club until her death at 89, and was awarded the club’s silver bowl for floral arranging no less than 10 times. Johnson concluded her remarks to the assembled members — a group that included nine former club presidents, but, sadly, not Ann Lee Brown, who at 100 is the club’s most senior member — by asking them to share a few memories of their own, which they cheer-

fully did. It was then time to view two DVDs featuring photos culled from club scrapbooks, as well as a more recent collection of photos, created by club member Betty Pritchard. With Leanora’s husband Kirk serving gamely as bartender, the day’s festivities ended with the members toasting their milestone with sparkling glasses of Prosecco and celebrating the club’s original — and still held — mission statement: “The purpose of this Club shall be to encourage the knowledge and love of gardening, to create awareness of the environment and to promote the beautification of Goochland through education and conservation. Anyone interested in learning more about the Goochland County Garden Club of becoming a member is asked to email goochlandgardenclub@ gmail.com.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
Next level multitasking: A salute to parents By Roslyn Ryan Editor
To be fair, the woman was clearly outnumbered. But as I sat waiting in the waiting room at my local veterinarian’s office one cold and rainy evening last week, it was obvious that the young mother seated nearby had her hands full and then some. Surrounded by three young children and a spirited dog that might have been able to leap clear over the office’s reception desk had she let it off its leash, she was, at the moment I walked in, also engaged in some sort of semi-heated back-and-forth negotiation via cell phone. As a rule, unless there is some professional or other truly compel-
ling reason not to, I try pretty hard to mind my own business when I m out and about. So, for at least the first few minutes of my wait at the vet s office that day, I tried to lose myself in a magazine. It didn’t work. No sooner had I turned the first page then a sudden wail erupted from the other side of the room. I’m not sure exactly what had happened, only that a bag of candy appeared to be involved and the aggrieved party felt they had been unfairly cheated out of their rightfully-deserved portion. A few moments later, with that case deftly adjudicated and peace restored, the youngest child’s bottle of juice hit the floor. Perhaps it had been a ruse, because no sooner had the mother bent to deal with
that predicament then the oldest of the three children started slowly edging toward the sleepy-eyed cocker spaniel he’d been repeatedly warned by his mother not to pet. He didn’t make it far before his mother, still on her cell phone and with one hand wiping up juice, used her other hand (which was still holding the dog leash) to snag the back of his jacket and gently but firmly steer him back into his seat. The middle child, noticing perhaps that her mother was now distracted by battles on two fronts, slyly reached over and pilfered a piece of candy from the bag her sister was holding. It didn’t go over well. I’m sure anyone with children can see where this is going.
For the next 20 minutes, the woman continued to put out fires, wipe up spills, correct behavior, soothe hurt feelings, dispense snacks, answer phone calls, re-correct behavior, and settle disagreements. Reader, it was like watching a juggler perform on a unicycle on a tightrope. As we move into 2019, it might be nice to take a moment to appreciate all of the parents out there, getting it all done with a surplus of grit to make up for the occasional shortage of hands. They push through exhaustion, never stop giving, and could give most highlevel CEOs (which some of them also are) a lesson in multitasking. This week, as every week, we take our hats off to them.
Young fan’s courage was true 2018 highlight By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
End of the year columns often reflect or offer perspective on the stories that inspired during the previous year, or recognize the many famous faces who departed during the previous 12 months. And there was an abundance of both during 2018. Familiar faces
who shaped many of our lives, including a beloved president made their final appearances this year, almost too many to list. Each and every one of them probably welldeserving of a single well-worded farewell. And inspiring stories? There was more than an ample amount of tales depicting heroic and meaningful acts, some changing just one

As I make a mental list of the important stories of the year, or the memorable individuals who passed the previous year, it’s difficult to choose just one — for all of them hold their own brand of importance, all of them touching stories of compassion and sacrifice. Letter to the Editor Goochland must make internet issue a priority Dear Editor, It is extremely frustrating that, in 2019, when we go to access the Internet, all we see is a spinning wheel. We live in the western part of Goochland County (George’s Tavern area) and use the only Internet option available to us: a MiFi from Verizon. This service, however, has distance as well as bandwidth limitations, which not only limits Internet but also cripples our voice calls. We have tried satellite service, but that limits users at a certain data level, and is also rather expensive and slow. I believe Goochland County should invest in providing Internet service to the majority of its residents, as opposed to the less than 50 percent of residents that have reasonable Internet service today. The issue is far from new, a mere microcosm of a nation-wide access problem. Whether it’s providing a County Provisioned Service or supplementing a carrier to provide more cable options, something needs to be done in the County. One result of the lack of Internet access, which the county must realize, is the curbed growth in the Western section of the county. Who wants to move where there is slow or no Internet access? Similarly, how can you expect to easily sell a slow-speed home? Lastly, and perhaps most important, this shortcoming puts our children at a disadvantage as they cannot use the Internet as an educational resource. College News Gum Spring resident Kealie Lachniet has earned a spot on the Dean’s List for the fall 2018 semester at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tennessee.
Looking back continued from >6 plotting his classroom destinations to accommodate his wheelchair. Trent became known as the Boilermakers #1 fan, and his bravery and tenacity was not lost on his classmates who soon recognized that Tyler was something special. Sadly, a cruel disease continued to take its deadly toll on the young sophomore, and, when football season began this year, Tyler had entered hospice care for his terminal illness. Through it all, Tyler’s dedication to this team never wavered and when his Boilermakers faced a daunting task in a seemingly unwinable game with powerhouse Ohio State, he may have been only the guy on campus that believed his underdogs had a chance at an upset. Tyler predicted a win and the team invited him to the
game, made him a special part of the pre-game ceremonies, and then took the field and watched his team as they delivered one of the most shocking and one-sided upsets of the season. The week leading up to the game had been a rough one for Tyler and his presence was not assured until late in the week. The victory was important to Purdue fans for the obvious reasons, but also for the joy it provided for one of its students. The smile on Tyler’s face and the tears on the faces of the many fans who learned of his plight following the game spoke volumes about one fan’s commitment, loyalty and tough-as-nails attitude. When the season ended, the Boilermakers got an invitation to the Music City Bowl in Nashville. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay offered his jet to transport Tyler and his family to the game, and the quickly becoming most famous Boilermaker served as
honorary captain. Now, the game didn’t go well for Purdue, which faced a talented Auburn team that put the pedal to the metal against the Boilermakers. Somehow, that final lopsided score didn’t deter from the joy of a team and its number one fan and a season that will last forever in the minds of those who lived it. A few days later, Tyler’s struggle ended when he peacefully passed surrounded by friends and family. The joy and happiness enjoyed just a few days earlier now turned to grief and sadness, and only the message of Tyler’s last days could console. But, his actions on a few Saturdays this past football season will inspire others who are facing enormous challenge or perhaps fighting the same disease. His courage and enthusiasm for life offer a message for all of us as we enter a new year, full of hope and promise measured in daily doses.

MSWCD offering scholarships for students in Goochland, Powhatan Contributed report
Monacan Soil and Water Conservation District is currently offering four scholarship opportunities for area high school seniors and college freshman interested in a college degree in natural resource conservation and/or environmental protection. Four $1,000 scholarships will once again be awarded statewide this year through the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation District’s (VASWCD) Educational Foundation. The purpose of these scholarships is to give financial support to students majoring in or showing a strong desire to major in a course curriculum related to natural Perhaps, Tyler said it best in a letter he published shortly before the holiday season. “Though I am in hospice care and have to wake up every morning knowing that the day might be my last, I still have a choice to make: to make that day the best it can be. To make the most of whomever comes to visit, texts, tweets or calls me. Yet, isn’t that a choice we all have every day? After all, nobody knows the amount of days we have left. Some could say we are all in hospice to a certain degree. So why don’t we act like it? Where is your gratitude? This Christmas, what are you thankful for? I had to write my will recently, and I’m just thankful I can give my family Christmas presents, maybe even for one last time. Let’s not forget my doctors gave me three months to live almost two-and-a-half months ago. So why can’t we live grateful lives? Why can’t we make every day count like it’s the last?”

Monacan District’s education committee will select one application to forward to the VASWCD for consideration of one of these scholarships. Applicants must be a resident
of Goochland or Powhatan to be eligible for consideration. Completed applications, which may be obtained by calling the Monacan SWCD office at (804) 556-4936, must be returned to the Monacan office by 4:30 p.m. on March 12, 2018. Email inquiries may be directed to pam.pleasants@ vaswcd.org. Completed applications can be mailed to the Monacan SWCD office at PO Box 66, Goochland 23063 or delivered to the office at 2748 Dogtown Road, Goochland.

Bulldogs rout visitors 78-40 By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
GOOCHLAND – Head coach Preston Gordon’s words summed up how his Goochland Boys Basketball players played on Friday. “They were pretty fired up about tonight,” he said. “They were dialed in.” They brought the pressure. They forced turnovers. They capitalized on those turnovers. They drained eight three-pointers. And they poured in 57 first-half points on the way to routing Randolph-Henry 78-40. “We let one slip away against Bluestone (on Wednesday) and they knew that we had to keep the pressure up, and it was a different mentality,” Gordon said. “It’s a little different when you
play at home – you’ve got the crowd behind you, and it was great to see so many alumni back and here supporting us, so that’s a good thing as well.” Three Bulldogs netted double-digit points, with Deion Harwood leading his team on 17, Quincy Snead netting 16 and Isaiah Matovu scoring 15. Five different players scored at least eight points each in the first half alone. Randolph-Henry struggled with turnovers early, and after freshman J.B. Bell netted his team’s first two points of the evening, the visitors were unable to get the ball out of their territory before Goochland got a hold of it again, enabling Bell to net two more. Brooks is the second Bulldog selected for the prestigious award in the past four years. Current Richmond Spider Reid Chenault won the award in 2015. Brooks was among the players selected to compete in the Big River Rivalry AllStar game, and he delivered four tackles
and an assist in his North All-Stars’ 25-13 victory over the South. Brooks also was among six Goochland Football players to earn First Team AllState honors, with Brooks doing so for linebacker. Center Justin Hawk, offensive lineman Connor Duncan, defensive lineman Jamal Carter, defensive back Devin McCray and defensive all-purpose player Kindrick Braxton also received First Team accolades on the VHSL Class 2 state football team. Kicker Jacob Hayward was named to Second Team All-State. The Goochland High School football team, led by first-year head coach Alex Fruth, compiled a 14-1 record and a trip to the VHSL Class 2 state championship game.

Goochland 7th in tourney Staff Report
AMELIA — Goochland Wrestling on Saturday competed in the Amelia Invitational Tournament at Amelia High School and placed seventh out of 13 teams. Saturday’s meet was an individual tournament with wrestlers advancing only if they win. Max Moreno and Ayden Doczi, who wrestle in the 126 and 220 pound weight classes, respectively, each placed third. One particular standout moment for the Bulldogs was Ethan Ford placing fourth in the 195 pound weight class. “He is a first-year wrestler coming from the football team so he doesn’t know a whole lot, but he makes up for it in strength and athleticism,” Goochland Wrestling head coach Mike Nadder noted. Many of the Bulldogs’ wrestlers were paired up with the top seed in their bracket, making it very hard for the wrestlers to advance into the semifinal round, Nadder said. He noted that several of his wrestlers looked good, but were eliminated by the third round. He said that Blake Ellis (106) wrestled tough, as did Jacob Massey (heavyweight).
Goochland continued from >8 three, Snead scored back-to-back buckets on steals and the Bulldogs barreled out to an 11-0 lead. Bell rebounded well, and he poured in all eight of his points on the night in the first quarter, including a layup off of a long pass. “J.B. got off to a great start; he had… eight of our 24 (first-quarter points), which is fantastic, and he led the way for us in the first quarter for scoring,” Gordon said. “To get him going was a great thing. I’ve been waiting for him to break out. That’s all (the points) he had for the whole game, but he did some other things for us. He had seven rebounds, and that’s – we’ve been missing that. Eight and seven, that’s fantastic for a freshman. The sky’s the limit for him, and it’s just getting him comfortable playing at the varsity level and playing with these guys. He’s gonna be just fine.”

Goochland Wrestling’s Ethan Ford (right) has his hand raised after winning a match in the Amelia Invitational Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 5 at Amelia High School. Ford, a first-year wrestler, overall placed fourth in the 195 weight class of the tournament.
Massey is wrestling up a weight class until he can get down to the 220 pound weight class, which, Nadder anticipates, should be this week. Nadder added that Luke Agee also looked good at the 152 pound weight class, and that Cody Nash is looking
good at 120 pounds, but had a very tough weight class. The Bulldogs on Monday, Jan. 7 practiced with Powhatan High School, and then on Tuesday, Jan. 8 participated in a quad match at Cumberland High School.
Harwood knocked down a pair of andone’s in a second quarter that saw him deliver 10 points. “Deion did a fantastic job; he got us going as well, kept us going into the second quarter,” Gordon said. In the first half, Matovu drained three three-pointers, and both Snead and Kameron Holman consistently dished out the scoring damage. “It’s good when you’ve got multiple guys playing this way,” Gordon said. “It makes our job tougher as coaches (when it comes to) who’s gonna get those minutes, but it’s also easier when we can play defense like this, that we can get more guys in and give guys breaks. Guys were consistent tonight. That’s what we needed.” The Bulldogs made several baskets off of steals. Harwood made a leaping grab on one such takeaway in the second quarter, and he fed it to Holman who made the layup. Holman finished the game with eight points overall.
“Kameron came back from a concussion…it’s his second full game,” Gordon said. “You could tell he had the cobwebs against Bluestone … he had a really good practice yesterday, was fired up. I told him this is how we need him to play.” The Bulldogs stayed red-hot in the third, opening the quarter on a fiery 12-point run. Randolph-Henry was held to nine points in the second half. Goochland is looking for fan support when it hits the road to play at Prince Edward – which, Gordon noted, has “always got a packed house” – on Monday, Jan. 7. The Bulldogs will then play at home versus Amelia on Wednesday, Jan. 9 and against Central Lunenburg on Friday, Jan. 11. All three games are scheduled for 7 p.m. “Those games are gonna be key for us,” Gordon said. “We need to play consistently to be successful, and I think we’re capable of doing that.
