Members of the community celebrated the opening of the new Clothes Closet in January 2018. The spacious, easily accessible store is part of the new 20,000 square-foot GoochlandCares (formerly Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services) facility that opened last year.
The search for the next principal of Goochland Middle School officially ended last week, with the announcement that acting principal Amie Potter has been appointed to fill the role vacated by Jennifer Rucker last October. Potter had been serving as the acting principal since Rucker left to serve as the Coordinator of Professional Development for Chesterfield County Public Schools. “Mrs. Potter is exactly what Goochland Middle School needs to continue to provide our students POTTER with the engaging experiences our teachers deliver each day, and I am excited to see her put her innovative ideas into action at GMS,” said GCPS superintendent Jeremy Raley. Potter began as a Goochland County teacher at Randolph Elementary in 2009 after teaching in the City of Richmond, New York City, and England. She served as assistant principal at GMS from 2014 until the fall of 2018. Potter resides in Goochland with husband Nate, Title I Mathematics Specialist at Byrd Elementary, and daughters Aurora and Alexandra.

welcomes Dr. Michael Marotta to its Goochland office. Dr. Marotta brings a wealth of experience after completing a two-year residency at the University of Virginia Hospital.
The Goochland County Animal Shelter has temporarily relocated to the County’s Central High School Cultural and Educational Complex located at 2748 Dogtown Road, in Goochland. The temporary Animal Shelter will operate at the rear of the Central High School Complex until the new shelter is completed. Citizens can continue to contact the Animal Shelter by calling (804) 556-5302. The shelter currently has the following pets available to a good home: a neutered male blue tick hound, about 8 years old; a spayed female lab mix, around 8 years old; and a spayed female brown tabby, about a year old, who would probably be best as a barn cat. All three of these sweethearts have been waiting in the shelter since October and are still in need of forever homes. To help them find loving families, the shelter is waiving the adoption fee for each of them. The Goochland Animal Shelter is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The facility has many lost dog and cat fliers posted. For more information on these pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Goochland Animal Shelter, call (804) 556-5302. You also can visit the shelter on Facebook at “Goochland County Animal Control.”

one service realizes that there is another need to be met, they can simply walk the client to that area of the building. It’s what Graham likes to call a “warm hand-off,” and is all part of what she describes as the organization’s focus on maintaining a client-focused approach. If the new facility earns high marks for appearance —soothing colors, comfy furniture and shining floors included—the accessibility it now offers is an even bigger benefit. The numbers, as Graham explained, don’t lie: the food pantry, now with extended hours and a streamlined, user-friendly setup has seen a 40 percent uptick in just the past year alone. The expanded Clothes Closet is now seeing far more shoppers, and more exam rooms mean GoochlandCares can now offer more specialty medical care.
A brick house in front of the facility, formerly used for office space and the food pantry, has now been converted to emergency housing. To Diane Reale, director of volunteer resources for Goochland Cares, the combination of the new building and the dedication of the hundreds of volunteers are what have helped the organization remain a vital resource for area residents in need. From her office near the entrance of the building, Reale oversees the scheduling of thousands of volunteer hours, working closely with those who donate their time for everything from stocking shelves to helping with tax preparation. Last year alone, these volunteers donated over 25,000 hours. Simply put, the recent successes “could not happen without the support of all of our
volunteers,” Reale said. As pleased as she has been with the progress made so far, Graham said last week that the focus now is on keeping that momentum going and getting the word out about the organization’s mission. There is still much work to be done, she said, and she doesn’t see the need for the services they provide declining any time soon. “We are truly helping to fill a need for our neighbors that otherwise may have gone unfulfilled,” Graham said. “And we are here to stay.”
continued from > 1 cast January day a few weeks ago, Graham practically glowed as she discussed the many ways that the move has benefitted the thousands of people GoochlandCares assists every year with everything from food assistance to medical care. Gone is the need for clients to travel to multiple locations around the county to access the Clothes Closet, or the food pantry, which used to be located in cramped quarters that were difficult to access for those with mobility issues. Graham explained that the original concept for the 20,000 square-foot space, which was built almost entirely with private donations, was to have a “one-stop shop” for all of the clients’ needs. Now, for example, if a staff member helping a client with

There will be a service in Susanne’s name on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m. at Byrd Presbyterian, 2229 Dogtown Rd, Goochland, VA 23063 STUART P. WHITE Stuart Pendergraft White, was born on Aug. 27, 1937, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and died in Manakin-Sabot on Jan. 19, 2019. She was a sixth generation Chapel Hillian and the daughter of Frank and Hazel Pendergraft. As a child, family and WHITE friends o f t e n remarked that she was especially aware of the natural world that surrounded her, living near the UNC campus, just up the hill from Eben Merritt’s Pasture in the Westwood neighborhood. She was a gifted young artist capable of dashing off landscapes and remarkable likenesses of people, plants and animals. Supporting her teenage interest in fashion, her parents subscribed to women’s fashion magazines, allowing Stuart to cut out and assemble the photographs of Richard Avedon and Diane Arbus. Upon graduation from Chapel Hill High School, she attended the University of North Carolina and Richmond Professional Institute (RPI), and while studying at the School of Art at RPI met her
lifelong partner and collaborator, Charles Ridgely White, whom she lost on July 27, 2018. Stuart and Charlie constructed their house and artist’s studio from abandoned historic houses in Goochland County and there, built a rewarding artistic enterprise encouraged by family, friends and patrons. Stuart became an accomplished landscape and portrait artist, her work informed by her childhood connections to the natural world; rides through Chapel Hill’s neighborhoods on her pony, Alice, and travels throughout the Southeast. Moving to Virginia, she enjoyed walks with Charlie in Goochland County, then a fragrant forest rolling up from the James River and travels with close friends and family in the U.S. and abroad. Whether posed in the early intact Tuckahoe Swamp, photographed during her travels to St. Croix, Russia, Australia or a Navaho pueblo, her paintings were primarily canvas collages of women, adorned in floral clothing and set against natural communities of plants and animals. They are a tangle of arms, legs, roots, limbs and leaves; her color palette was earth tones. Her paintings were methodical assemblies on canvas: a penciled pattern, under paint, the gluing of a jigsaw of drawings and photographs, and then over paint and refinement. She created plainly told yet complex stories connecting people and companion and wild animals set within natural communities. Sales that began among friends and neighbors expanded to national and international audiences, including major commissioned pieces sold through her studio in Manakin-Sabot,
local and national art shows and at Richmond’s Uptown Gallery, a cooperative that she helped to establish and manage. Throughout her life and work, she principally celebrated the beauty and tenacity of women; their adornment, their labors and achievements, all within a natural world under assault and blindingly beautiful. Those who knew her best understood that she loved spending time with friends and family, including her beloved cats. She adored above all else those lazy afternoons on the beautiful beaches of North and South Carolina. Stuart’s humor, wit, kindness, love and smile will never be forgotten by those who knew and loved her, and her art will outlive us all to serve as colorful memories of our past. She is survived by her brother, Bill Pendergraft of Chapel Hill; sister-in-law, Jeanne Phillips; nine nieces and 12 nephews, Will Pendergraft, Emily Pendergraft, Marsha White, Michael White, Victoria White Rolley, Mark White, Brian White, Eileen Page, Edwin Behnke Jr., Kathleen Lambert, Mark Behnke, Paul Malmquist, Gregory Malmquist, Teresa Malmquist, James Malmquist, Timothy Hood, Scott Hood, Gale Hood-Bixby, Steven Hood, Margo McGee, Natalie Hood; 31 grandnieces and nephews and 15 great-nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life and work will occur this year at the Uptown Gallery, 1305 West Main Street, Richmond, Va., (804) 353-8343. Contributions in her name may be made to the Democratic Party of Virginia, P.O. Box 448, Richmond, Va. 23218. Self-portrait by the artist.

Local first responders offered lesson in grace By Roslyn Ryan Editor
I certainly can’t speak for everyone, but it would seem that many of us have a certain idea of what our local fire and rescue workers do when they are on the job. Like me, many may have a vision — shaped in part by television and movies — of brave men and women careening toward house fires and accident scenes, lights blazing and sirens blaring, then leaping into action to administer life-saving aid or pull trapped victims to safety. They plunge in and take charge, relying on training and cool heads to confront situations many of us
couldn t begin to deal with. Their role demands toughness, a certain swagger, and an ability to suppress the kinds of emotions that would simply overtake the average person when faced with trauma and tragedy. Make no mistake about it, this certainly is part of the job. Having covered everything from car accidents to plane crashes as a reporter, I can’t even recall how many times I have been simply amazed by the ice-water cool rescue workers are able to maintain. That said, the other day I was reminded that the job these heroes do involves more than adrenaline and technical know-how. I was attending an event when, unbeknownst to me at the time, a
senior attendee sitting just a few seats away found herself suddenly in need of medical attention. Very discreetly, someone summoned several rescue workers who also happened to be in attendance. Now here, readers, is the part that I have not since been able to forget, and probably never will: the team of first responders, upon learning of the situation, made their way purposefully yet inconspicuously across the room to the woman’s side. The situation was assessed quickly but calmly, and — as I could see from just a few feet away — with a touching respect and concern for preserving the woman’s dignity (i.e., not causing her any alarm or embar-
rassment). Simply put, they appeared to treat her as gently as they would treat their own mothers, and certainly the way we all would hope our loved ones would be cared for in times of crisis. If you, like me, have worried at times about the lack of compassion often on display in the world today, the scene was indeed a tonic for the soul. Whoever these first responders were, they provided a reminder of just how fortunate we are in Goochland to have men and women like this looking out for us every single day. They offered an example of humanity at its best, and are a true asset to this community.
Update from the Capitol Bill aimed at proffers defeated, lotto measure a win By Del. Lee Ware, R-65 Contributing Columnist
That there are vastly different and competing interests was borne home to both Goochland and Powhatan this week, as marquee bills advanced on behalf of both counties were defeated in the State Senate and House of Delegates, respectively.
For Goochland’s supervisors, I patroned House Bill 1801, proposing numerous changes to conditional rezoning proffers from developers. Though I was granted several courtesies as a committee chairman, and despite splendid testimonies from Goochland County’s Tara McGee, county attorney, and Paul Drumwright of the County Administration

staff, the bill was defeated 5-1 in House committee, after facing broad opposition. One response to the large proposed landfill OK’d by Cumberland County has been Senate Bill 1761, patroned by Senator Glen Sturtevant, who represents us in the Senate, a bill of which I served as co-patron. The bill would have required—
going forward — counties wanting to establish a large landfill or similar facility that would affect surrounding counties to secure a certification of approval from those surrounding counties. SB 1761 was effectively defeated in a Senate committee, 14-0. Two of my bills fared far better. see Ware > 7

Rogers a model of humanity at its best By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
I am part of generation that didn’t grow up watching Mr. Rogers on television, but I’ve heard that familiar theme song what seems like thousands of times. Like many parents, I listened more than saw Mr. Rogers as my children sat and seemed magically enchanted by a man who spoke in simple monotones that contained a message that had a magical appeal to the target audience: children. Millions of Americans will be reintroduced to Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood this month in the form of a documentary entitled “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” set to air on HBO and PBS. The documentary, released last year, earned more than $22 million at the box office, an almost unheard-of return in that category. In recent years, Mr. Rogers has received well-deserved credit for his approach to raising and inspiring children, an approach that included recognizing the unique nature and value of each child. Mr. Rogers embraced diversity, and emphasized the importance of inclusion and self worth. His style led some to doubt his sincerity, judging his delivery too good to be true, and a sense of niceness that made them feel uneasy. But, those closest to Mr. Rogers recall a man that changed little on or off the set, and the genuine belief in goodness extended into everything the trained minister did. The celebration of Fred Rogers stands in stark contrast to the current state of American culture, where rage and confrontation presee Rogers > page 7

This is the same scouting program offered to boys, and girls will be able to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. The new Troop for girls is linked to Boy Scout Troop 710. Troop 710 is sponsored by American Legion Post 215, has been active in Goochland County since 1983, and has produced over 75 Eagle Scouts. The Troops will share the same chartering organization and unit committee, but the girls

In addition to learning Scouting and leadership skills, girls in the Troop will spend lots of time outdoors. Just like the boys, they’ll go camping, hiking, biking, and boating. All interested girls between the ages of 11 and 17 are invited to join the new Troop. Girls who are 10 years old are also eligible to join, if they have completed the 5th grade or earned the Cub Scout Arrow of Light. Troop meetings are on Monday nights from 7:15 - 8:30 pm at the Heart of Virginia
Scout Reservation, with the very first meeting for girls to be held on February 4. Prospective Scouts and their families are welcome to visit Troop meetings. For more information about the Troop for girls, contact Scoutmaster Michelle Schmitz at scoutsbsa.goochland@gmail.com or follow the new Troop’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ Goochland.ScoutsBSA/ Girls who join the new Troop and strive for Eagle Scout have the potential to become members of the BSA’s Inaugural Class of Female Eagle Scouts in the fall of 2020. Under normal circum-
stances, the BSA requires youth who want to earn the Eagle Scout rank to complete all requirements before their 18th birthday. However, since girls are being admitted to the program for the very first time in 2019, there will be a temporary transition period to allow new Scouts sufficient time to earn the Eagle rank. Girls and boys who are over 16 but under 18 as of February 1, 2019, and who join Scouts for the first time between February and December 2019, will be able to request an extension of time to complete the Eagle Scout Award from the BSA National Council.
important. Looking back, some would marvel at how a man with Mr. Rogers’ philosophy and unapologetic dedication to love and unity could survive for decades in an industry that often discards those with the best of intentions. Seeing his almost childlike face again on a promo for the upcoming special provided clues to his longevity and continued popularity. That sincerity and non-subtle love for children oozes from every sen-
tence he delivers and somehow makes us envious of a person who rejected cynicism in favor of trust and respect. I suppose it all led me to question how Fred Rogers would fit in today’s meanspirited social media scene, or how he would respond to the constant back and forth by our nation’s most prominent leaders. Perhaps we could all use a little more friendliness in our neighborhoods and a dose of cringe-worthy overly-corny
lessons might benefit all. And maybe if we all viewed the world through the eyes of a child similar to the method employed by Mr. Rogers, the world would be more amicable and all of our neighbor-
concern to me, for both Chesterfield and Fluvanna in the 65th House District have large deposits from electricity-generating plants. So, I was pleased to participate in comprehensive agreement between the legislature, the Governor, and Dominion Energy, that will ensure cleanup of the ash at a reasonable cost to both rate-payers, the Commonwealth, and the company. My Floor speech on tax reform and conformity of Virginia’s tax guidelines to the U.S. Tax Code received widespread attention. As noted
last week, if Virginia simply “conforms to the new guidelines of the federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, our taxpayers would face a significant hike in state taxes. My speech called for the legislature to act sooner rather than later to prevent this, and to act swiftly so that tax-preparers have from us the guidance they need meet IRS deadlines. Delegate Lee Ware represents the 65th House District consisting of Powhatan, western Chesterfield, western Goochland, and eastern Fluvanna counties.

OOCHLAND — A stellar season continues. With one regular season game remaining — a home matchup versus Nottoway on Wednesday — Goochland Basketball has striven to put itself in a strong position for the postseason after further extending its winning streak. Prior to taking on Amelia on the road on Tuesday, the Bulldogs won two more games to make it 12 wins in a row by routing Central Lunenburg 69-22 on Thursday, and fending off Prince Edward at home 72-65 on Friday. Kameron Holman, Isaiah Matovu and Quincy Snead all reached double-digits in scoring in three total quarters played against Lunenburg. Holman scored 12 points and picked up four steals. Matovu netted 12 points. Snead added 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Against Prince Edward on Friday, Deion Harwood unleashed a fiery performance as he rolled out 24 points and added 5 rebounds. Holman continued his strong showing in the closing stages of the regular season as he dropped in 16 points and also brought down five rebounds. DJ Harris, who earlier in the week impressed with a 16-point game against Buckingham, had another double-digit day with 12 points. He also picked up five steals to contribute to Goochland’s strong defensive effort. According to Goochland Basketball, Monday’s game was cancelled due to a recent bomb threat at Randolph-Henry. The game will not be made up. Wednesday’s home game versus Nottoway is on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. When they took on Nottoway the first time this season on Jan. 23, the Bulldogs, playing on the road, won the game handily on a 91-51 result.

GOOCHLAND — Goochland Wrestling’s Max Moreno has been a leading force on the Bulldogs throughout the season. Competing in the 126 weight class, Max picked up two wins by pins against opponents from Rappahannock County and Highland Springs in a recent regular season meet. Goochland’s wrestlers this year have had to do battle with injuries and sickness. When the Bulldogs wrestled Poquoson, they had to forfeit six weight classes. “We knew what we were up against to begin with, since Poquoson High School is known to be a state perennial power,” Goochland Wrestling head coach Mike Nadder said, “but giving up all of those points put us in the hole right from the start.”
But the Bulldogs bounced back from a 75-0 sweep by Poquoson to defeat Rappahannock County 30-22. Devan Davis followed up Max Moreno’s win with a quick pin at the 132 pound weight class. Daniel Thompson picked up a second period pin at the 145 pound weight class. “It was good to get Daniel back in the lineup since he had missed some matches because of a bad knee,” Nadder said. Taking on Highland Springs in Goochland’s Senior Night home match on Wednesday, Jan. 30, the Bulldogs wrestled well, Nadder said, but they were still forfeiting the last four weight classes “and that was a little much to overcome.” Nadder noted that Alex Thompson didn’t waste any time at the 152 pound weight class and picked up a pin in 28 seconds. Newcomer Isaac Spangler had a hard six-
minute match, but he delivered the victory on an 11-10 decision. The Bulldogs took a team setback in the match to the Springers at 45-33. “I believe if we had our upper weight, we would have won the match,” Nadder said. The Bulldogs honored five seniors on Wednesday night before the Highland Springs match. They were: Devan Davis at 132 pounds, Daniel Thompson at 145 pounds, Romeo Moreno at 138 pounds, Jake Massey at 220 pounds and Wyatt Ford at 160 pounds. Goochland Wrestling took on regionals this past weekend and saw six of its wrestlers place in the top five of their respective weight divisions. Max Moreno, Romeo Moreno and Ethan Ford all took fourth, while fifths went to Blake Smith, Cody Nash and John Daly.

Goochland Girls BB pushes past King William By Rob Witham Special Correspondent
GOOCHLAND -- Early Thursday night at home, Blake Thomas found the basket when no one else could. Goochland girls basketball, looking to avenge a December loss to King William, needed a spark, and the team got it from Thomas. The senior scored the first five points of the game Thursday and contributed 13 before fouling out as the Bulldogs used a late offensive push to earn a 48-44 win over the Cavaliers. “She’s a shooter, and I told her to keep shooting,” Goochland head coach James Harris said after the contest. “A shooter never stops, even when you’re missing. I told her to try to get to the free throw line, take that short jumper, get that confidence up.” With the rest of the Bulldogs trying to find their offensive rhythm in the first half, King William took advantage, finding its own rhythm first to surge ahead 27-16 by halftime thanks in part to an 11-point performance from guard Channing Pitts. The Cavaliers outscored Goochland 21-10 in the second period. Gabby Ragone became the first Bulldog other than Thomas to make a field goal with 39 seconds left in a half filled with interruptions thanks to a combined 26 fouls. Not helping matters was Thomas sitting on the bench down the stretch, having committed three herself. Out of the locker room, floor general Ragone began to take control, her steal and basket sparking a quick 5-0 run to start the third period and draw Goochland within six.
Rob Witham/Richmond Suburban News
Goochland’s Blake Thomas after releasing the shot in the Bulldogs’ home game versus King William, which the Bulldogs won 48-44 in a closely contested matchup.
King William answered back to grow the lead to seven entering the fourth. The long-anticipated Bulldog run finally arrived, just in time, in the final stanza. After scoring five of the quarter’s first seven points, Thomas nailed a three-pointer, and was followed by Ragone with a triple. Suddenly, Goochland had the lead at 39-37, forcing a King William timeout with 4:36 left. The Cavs regrouped, retook the lead at 43-41, then fouled Thomas, who made one
free throw – her final point as she fouled out moments later. Without their leading scorer, Goochland trailed 43-42 with 1:32 to go. Emma Anderson made one free throw to up the Cavaliers’ lead to two, then Anjelyn Carter scored her first points of the night at a critical juncture, tying the game at 44. Lanaysia Gonzalez was fouled with 38 seconds left, making one of two at the line for a 45-44 Goochland lead. The Cavaliers could hold for the last shot but, trying to feed the ball
inside, it was tipped and the floor scramble was on. The Bulldogs not only grabbed the ball in the scrum, but called a timeout to seize possession with 18 seconds remaining. King William had to foul, sending Carter to the line. She made a pair for a 47-44 lead. A game-tying trey for the Cavs fell short, and, fittingly, Goochland iced the win with a free throw with four seconds remaining. Goochland added a 48-38 win on Friday over Prince Edward. In that game, Gonzalez dominated with an 18-point, 20-rebound night. On Monday at home, Goochland continued to roll with a 65-33 trouncing of Randolph-Henry. Ten different Goochland players scored in that game. Netting double figures for the Bulldogs were senior Justice Tibbs and juniors Kenley Warren and Jalyn Burns with 10 points each. Going into Tuesday’s home game and regular season finale versus Amelia County, the Bulldogs stood at 13-8, having won four of their last five with the Class 2, Region A playoffs just around the corner. If Ragone’s leadership, Thomas’ shooting and Gonzalez’s inside presence all come together simultaneously, Goochland is positioned for what could be a wild but long ride deep into the month of February. The key begins with Ragone, who plays where her coach used to prowl the court. “I played guard when I was young and was told in situations, you’ve got to take control,” Harris noted. “You’re going to play our style of ball or their style, so I tell her: take control, and be smart.” Goochland Gazette Sports Editor Nick Vandeloecht contributed to this report..
Dynamite team wins tournament championship Contributed Report
GOOCHLAND — On the weekend of Friday, Nov. 16, GUSA’s U-10 team “Dynamite” became tournament champs at the Mega Blast Soccer Tournament hosted by the Richmond Kickers. The team won its first game 2-0 against Mary Munford, then dominated the Virginia Legacy Peninsula Titans 7-2 on Saturday, Nov. 17. The next day, GUSA Dynamite beat the Tri-Cities United team 2-0 to land the team a spot in the championship game that afternoon against Mary Munford. GUSA Dynamite won in a nail biter of a game 5-4. The Dynamite team, coached by Jason Funkhouser and Michael Wallmeyer, has played together for several GUSA seasons now, and they’ve continued to develop and hone their skills through the GUSA program. Through GUSA, this team and the other teams in the program learn fundamental soccer skills, how to work as a team and build lasting friendships both on and off the field. The next season of GUSA begins midMarch, and registration is live now through gusasoccer.net.
