As the fight against cancer continues worldwide, recent studies offer proof that progress has been made. According to “Cancer Facts and Figures 2019,” published by the American Cancer Society, there has been a 27 percent drop in the overall cancer rate in the United States. Rates of death from lung cancer dropped by 48 percent from 1990 through 2016 among men and 23 percent in women from 2002-2016. Death from prostate cancer dropped 51 percent from 1993 through 2016. Colorectal cancer deaths dropped 53 percent from 1970 – 2016. Death from breast cancer in females dropped 40 percent from 1989 through 2016. While these figures are very encouraging, there is still work to be done. Cancer is still the second leading cause of death in men and women. This study also shows that there has been an increase in melanoma and cancers of the liver, thyroid, uterus and pancreas. For more than two decades, Relay For Life of Goochland has been raising money to see Relay > 11

One doctor to another... As part of an ongoing effort by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs to donate 1,000 Dr. Seuss books in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, the GFWC Goochland Woman’s Club is pitching in by donating to doctors’ offices around the county. Dlub member Dianna Gordon is shown presenting Dr. James H. Bowles Jr. with the first set of books for his office.
Looking for just the right items to spruce up your home this spring? The public is invited to a Furniture and Fixtures Sale from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., featuring a variety of slightly used items including household and office furniture, appliances, lighting fixtures, hardware, sports equipment and decorative accessories. The event is being co-hosted by Habitat for Humanity of Goochland County and Goochland Cares and both organizations will benefit from the proceeds. “Goochland Cares’ Clothes Closet often receives inquiries from generous citizens who have household and building items they wish to donate but that our store cannot accommodate due to our limited space,” said Sally Graham, Executive Director of Goochland Cares. “Habitat of Goochland receives the same type of offers but they do not have a permanent space. Partnering on a sale of just furniture and fixtures gives our organizations the opportunity to offer items at a reduced cost to businesses, individuals and families.” see Furniture sale > 2
