Speaker at Dems’ event asks for embrace of bipartisanship Contributed report
Goochland and Powhatan County Democratic Committees co-hosted the first annual Taste of the 7th (District) at lovely and friendly Independence Golf Club in Powhatan Saturday evening, March 9, 2019. Goochland HS culinary students, one church, and 16 restaurants from Goochland, Powhatan, and surrounding areas contributed delicious tastings that ranged from appetizers, salads, entrees to desserts. Local high school culinary students volunteered as interns to assist with this event. More than thirty silent auction items were donated by local individuals, restaurants, and small businesses. Attendees had fun bidding on offerings such as jewelry, decorative ware, small appliances, art works, gift baskets, and vacation homes. Master of Ceremonies, Gene Rossi, legal expert, radio and television commentator, and former Democratic candidate for Lt. Governor, energized the crowd of more than 150 people at the fund-raising event. 7th Congressional
District Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, Special Guest of Honor, spoke passionately about the excitement of bipartisan passage of meaningful legislation in the House of Representatives. She also celebrated former and new candidates for local and state public offices who were present. She encouraged bipartisan, civil engagement in civic affairs and spoke about being honored to represent all her constituents in the 7th Congressional District. Four Democrats from Goochland and Powhatan counties were recognized for their outstanding contributions to their communities. Dr. James H. Bowles Sr., M.D., community county activist, member of the Goochland Democratic Committee, and previous chair of the Goochland NAACP, who passed away on January 17, 2019, was honored with a Distinguished Service Award. Steve Fleming of Goochland also received a Distinguished Service Award for his many years as a community leader and a leader in the Democratic
Party at the local, state, and national levels, serving three times as the Chair of the Goochland County Democratic Committee, and as Delegate of the Democratic National Committee in 2000. Josephine Goodman, local banker, former Powhatan Christmas Mother, and current Powhatan Electoral Board member, and Frances Broaddus-Crutchfield, thespian, writer, Democratic activist, and another former Powhatan Christmas Mother, also received Distinguished Service Awards. Led in this endeavor by Goochland Co-Chair Tina Winkler and Powhatan Chair Kathryn Waycaster, along with Powhatan’s Rachel de Iga, this first Taste of the 7th celebration was a hit for all attendees. The Goochland and Powhatan County Democratic Committees expressed appreciation to all contributors of foods and silent auction items, to the four Distinguished Service Award winners, to our elected leaders, and to attendees who made this inaugural Taste of the 7th event a great success.

continued from >1 any kind of threat that might arise at any time. Most critically, Fisher said, “we need to stay ahead of the ball and know what’s coming our way. That means creating solid relationships with other law enforcement agencies, he said, and studying the kinds of issues they are already facing. By the time you see the problems in your own community, Fisher said, it’s already too late. Fisher said he’s interested in setting up a civilian board made up of community members who would meet monthly with the sheriff and a deputy, as well as reaching out to local church leaders, businesses and home-owners associations. He’d also like to take a fresh eye look at several unsolved cases from years past, and make sure deputies have the equipment and training needed to handle any kind of emergency situation they might face. At the end of the day, Fisher said, “I just want what’s best for Goochland. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Criminal
Justice, Fisher began his career doing investigative work for area law firms. In 1985, he founded Rapid Deployment & Protection Worldwide, beginning a career that would expand to include investigative and protective work around the United States and eventually around the world. The company specialized in personal protection, diplomatic security, training and intelligence work for the US government. Fisher said his most recent assignment was the protection of a Middle East Prime Minister.
Fisher is currently one of three Goochland residents to announce their candidacy for Sheriff of Goochland County, a list that includes Goochland County Sheriff ’s Office Sergeant Steven Creasey and state investigator Levin White. All three are vying to fill the seat that will be vacated by long-time sheriff James Agnew, who announced last year that he would not seek another term. More information on Fisher’s campaign can be found at www.efisherforsheriff.com.

Because Byrd, located on Dogtown Rd, does not currently have access to high speed internet, live streaming the services was not a viable option. What, then, could they do? Enter Burnet’s son Alec, 13, and Asher Bunovich, 14, two friends from Goochland Middle School and Goochland High School respectively who thought they might be able to solve the issue with a little creativity and elbow grease. Together, the two managed to build a new computer from parts they ordered online, crafting a system that has more than enough memory to meet the church’s needs. Both Cheri Burnet and Asher’s mother Kristi said they were very proud of the boys for their problem solving abilities,

The real reason cheaters don’t win in the end By Roslyn Ryan Editor
As millions of jaws dropped across the nation last week — after news broke about the largest college admissions scandal ever uncovered -- the first thing I felt was a solid measure of disgust. So many Americans abhor cheating because it is an affront to the notion that hard work, grit and perseverance are the true keys to achieving success. Traditionally, we have wanted our playing fields to be level, and our leaders to be upstanding. Despite the recent penchant for embracing so-called “antiheroes,” the vast majority of us still want
our sports stars to play fair, our political and business leaders to be principled, and our colleges and universities to maintain ethical admissions policies. Those of us with a few dozen trips around the sun have learned, sadly, that this just isn’t reality. We are the ones who have watched a President get impeached and dozens of revered professional athletes found guilty of steroid use. We have seen priests hauled off to jail for heinous crimes against children and formerly beloved entertainers jailed for sexual misconduct. Time after time, it has been proven that the faith we put in some person or institution was woefully misplaced. I’m an adult, and I’m used to
this. But it kind of breaks my heart that kids have to see it. Let me be clear: I’m not sorry that young people –including those who may have just finished the college application process -- are being offered solid proof that life is not fair, and that there will always be people willing to lie, cheat and steal to get what they want. No, that’s a good lesson to learn at any age. What bothers me is the thought that something like this could encourage a young person to think, just as they are ready to spread their wings, that working hard isn’t really worth it. That there isn’t any point in trying to win because the deck is going to be stacked against
them anyway. Let me tell you what I know: The person who buys his or her way into an elite university may come out with a degree and the connections needed to secure a good job. But in the end, the thing they will not have is the one thing money can’t buy: the satisfaction and pride found in having earned their success. They will not have developed the toughness that hard workers display, or the belief in themselves that they can meet a challenge head-on and succeed. It’s the reason true winners are the ones who earn what they have, and why cheaters always lose in the end.
Scandal brings to mind words spoken years ago By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
I had a lifelong friend who approached life with an overly active sense of skepticism, and his comments were so often tinged with sarcasm it was sometimes difficult to decipher truth from banter. In his defense, his pessimism was more for show than a true frustration with the way things are, but, suffice it to say, he was always good
for an eyebrow-raising comment or some witticism that perplexed and lingered long after it was spoken. I distinctly remember one such episode when we were teenagers and discussing what it took to become successful in America. After pondering various paths to what seemed like sure success such as college or learning a trade, he ended the conversation with words I long considered one of his most outrageous declarations.

“I’ll tell you one thing, Ridolphi,” he said. “A lie is as good as the truth if you can find someone to believe it.” Now, I’m sure he didn’t compose that bit of troubling wisdom, but I often thought of his comment at various times in my life when truth seemed stranger than fiction. I thought about his philosophical overview again when news of a college admissions scam hit the airwaves last week. After learning
of parents who presented their children as scholarship-worthy athletes, or paid to have test scores increased, I joined many who questioned how people could stoop so low. I also thought of those outrageous words spoken by my friend and, how, at many points of this scandal, parents, coaches, administrators and students must have looked someone right in the eye see Lies > 11

Letter to the Editor Board of Supervisors should cast votes to keep Goochland rural Dear Editor, Since the Goochland County Planning Commission Public Hearing held on Thursday, February 7, 2019, it seems like Mr. Shelhorse feels he knows what is best for Goochland County taxpayers. In both Tuckahoe Bridge LLC. and Reed Marsh LLC. it appears that the only thing Mr. Shelhorse cared about is if the property has access to public water and sewer. While the other four planning commissioner were willing to answer e-mails from concern residents who live on and used Manakin Road, Mr. Shelhorse remained silent until the night of the public hearing. My group worked very hard to educate ourselves and others in the community about the Re-Zoning Process in Goochland County. Our team tried to followed the public hearing format provided by Jo Ann Hunter, Director of Community Development at a workshop held on January 21, 2019 at the public hearing on February 7, 2019 .However Mr. Shelhorse chairman would not allow for citizen to give their time to another team member (as was allowed in the past). Thankfully our team members were able to remain focused on the specific concerns that they were assigned to address in the limited time they were given to speak (three minutes). The team focused on the specific concerns, contradictions, and other important considerations from the County Staff Report that was prepared in response to the Tuckahoe Bridge LLC. application. Our public comments were also based on each section of the 2035 Comprehensive Plan, Goochland County’s Public Facilities Master Plan 2018-2043, see Letters > page 16

Goochland baseball earns first win of 2019 By Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor
G
OOCHLAND -- The Bulldogs battled through a roller coaster of a home game on Tuesday, March 12, to earn their first win of the season, 15-11, over Central Lunenburg. “I think we really needed it after the way we played earlier this week,” said Goochland junior and Tuesday night’s starting pitcher Jackson Raines. “A hard-fought game like this is always nice to win, but I think we should’ve played a lot better today.” “First win feels good -- it’s good to get one in the win column,” Goochland head coach Wes Farkas said. “This wasn’t the way that we wanted to see it -- we made a lot of miscues in the field, pitchers’ pitch count was really high early...you can talk about the strike zone being tight, but our guys adjusted. We just didn’t play defense.” The Bulldogs led 14-5 after five innings, but the Chargers powered their way back into the ball-game on a six-run sixth frame. Goochland’s defense ultimately overcame two fielding errors in the top of the seventh to put away the game on a 4-6-3 double play from Raines, John Joyner and Cole Bashinski. Raines opened the game on the mound and struck out four batters in four and one-third innings pitched. Goochland’s closer, Walker Murray, pulled his team out of the sixth inning with the help of a lineout caught by teammate Eli Bowman at third base, and allowed one hit and no runs across the final four outs notched by the Bulldogs’ defense. “I think our pitchers made some good pitches,” Raines said. “I just thought we had lost some focus in the field.” But timely hitting was there for the Bulldogs, as they out-hit Lunenburg 18-11. “I think we need to keep the bats going,” said Raines, who batted three-for-four with a double, a run, a walk and two RBI, while his teammate Bowman was four-for-four with a run scored and two RBI. Bowman also made the opening hit in the Bulldogs’ seven-run second inning. “I was trying to see the ball deep and let my hands work...and let whatever happens, happen,” Bowman said. The Bulldogs flipped from a 2-0 deficit into a 7-2 lead in the bottom of the second. Batters in the seventh, eighth and ninth spots loaded the bases as Bowman gapped the ball through right-center, Joyner reached base on a fielding

error and Jonathan White delivered an arching bunt over the middle. An error and a fielder’s choice on the atbats of Walker Murray and Joey Ramsbottom, respectively, tied the game at 2-2, and Austin Rose walked in the go-ahead run. The Bulldogs then pulled away in the frame as Zack Potts smacked a grounder up the middle for a tworun single, and Bashinski smashed a two-run rocket into the outfield before getting taggedout on the attempted inside-the-park homer. Bashinski batted two-for-four with a triple,
double, a run scored and three RBI, and Rose batted one-for-one with three walks and three RBI. Murray was three-for-three with an RBI, two runs, a double and a walk, and Potts batted one-for-one with a walk, a run and two RBI. Ramsbottom hit two-for-five with two runs scored and an RBI. “We were moving runners better today, the heart of our lineup put the ball in play really well tonight and I think the bats are coming around,” Farkas said. “We’ve got a lot to work on on defense, though.”
Farkas said they need to know when to charge a ball and how fast the runners are - “just little things that good teams have to do to win.” Raines spoke to the importance of the players focusing, keeping true to their fundamentals and “playing how we know how to play.” “Just more ground balls, more reps,” Bowman added, “just more everything.” Goochland on Thursday took a 4-0 setback at Nottoway. The Bulldogs rematched Powhatan this past Tuesday and will host Buckingham at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 21.

Thursday
Lies continued from >6 and lied. “Yes, I am a talented crew member.” That’s not to say I hadn’t considered dozens of times when events warranted. Last month, it popped in my mind when news of an horrific attack in Chicago surfaced. The victim relayed a story that seemed almost too violent and hatefilled to be real, an attack fueled by homophobia and racism. You can’t make this stuff up, right? Well, actually, you can, allegedly, choreograph even the most heinous TUESDAY EVENING 4 PM 4:30 ESPN

of attacks. But, in order to make the lie stick, you have to find someone to believe it. Now, through years of experience, I have come to the cruel conclusion that there are people in this world who will look you right in the eye and lie, and developing a good sense regarding the difference between a certain substance and Shinola is essential. But, even for the best detectives of truth, some episodes still confound the best judgment, and all of us have been fooled at one point or another. Shortly after the Chicago attack, I saw a special on a British runner who organized a well-covered run
across America in an effort to break the long-standing record. His team took off from California headed east, support members driving slowly in the van as the runner jogged along on the road behind the truck. It seemed like a great story, a challenge of endurance and commitment and a victory of the human spirit over seemingly insurmountable odds. It didn’t work out that way. Five days into the trip, the runner opted for nighttime running, and placed posters over the rear window of the van to prevent his teammates from seeing him — hanging on to the
www.goochlandgazette.com
ladder on the back of the van for mile after mile. The trio was busted when a dedicated runner decided to join the group on one of these nights and run along the side to show his support for the effort. As he waited for the van with his video camera running, a van appeared from the shadows slowly moving along with the most obvious piece of the picture missing. There was no sign of the runner. Puzzled, the young supporter finally approached the stopped van, surprising the three team members comfortably seated in the heated cab.
The reporter covering the story travelled to England to interview the runner and ask the difficult question regarding his cheating on the run. But, the runner remained defiant in his claims of innocence, looking the camera right in the eye and telling the reporter he ran every step of the journey. Now, most who have researched the story agree the record effort wasn’t legitimate, and I was left reflecting on those stupid words my friend uttered decades ago. And, after all these years, I suppose that maybe a lie is as good as the truth — as long as you realize the difference.

Run air conditioners without wasting energy
F
ew people can make it through the dog days of summer without turning on their air conditioners. Men and women concerned about the environment and conserving energy may try to avoid using their air conditioners, but doing so on especially hot days can be challenging and potentially even deadly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that roughly 600 people die from complications related to extreme heat each year. Heat stroke can result when a body overheats after prolonged exposure to or physical exertion in high temperatures. The Mayo Clinic notes that the condition is most common in summer and that a lack of air conditioning during periods of sustained hot weather is a risk for heat stroke.
Conserving energy during summer is a noble pursuit, but people should not jeopardize their health in an effort to conserve energy. Air conditioners might not be the most eco-friendly appliances, but there are ways to run them without wasting energy.
systems may rest easier knowing they are only paying to cool certain parts of their homes overnight. Zoned systems come equipped with programmable thermostats that homeowners can adjust when they go to bed, ensuring they won’t be cooling empty living rooms and basements overnight.
Use a window unit or zoned system overnight The U.S. Department of Energy notes that central air conditioners are more efficient than room air conditioners, which are typically installed in windows. But central air conditioning systems that are not zoned may be cooling empty rooms overnight. Apartment dwellers may find window units less wasteful, while homeowners who can afford to install zoned air conditioning
Metro
Have units serviced before summer begins. Well-maintained central air conditioners will work more efficiently.
Routine maintenance of air conditioning systems will ensure that systems aren’t working harder, and therefore consuming more energy, than necessary to cool a home.
Let fans and air conditioners work together The DOE notes that using fans and air conditioners simultaneously is an effective way to circulate cool air throughout a home. By running both fans and air conditioners at the same, the air conditioners won’t have to be run as long or as hard as they would if no fans were turned on.
Conserve energy in other ways
Because the dangers of heat stroke and heat exhaustion are so considerable, men and women should never keep their air conditioners off on hot days simply to conserve energy. Finding safer alternatives to conserving energy on hot days can be just as effective and won’t put consumers’ health at risk. Unplug appliances that are not being used and prepare cold dinners so ovens that can make home interiors feel hotter won’t need to be turned on. In addition, take advantage of the longer daylight hours in summer and keep lights off until the sun goes down. These are safe ways to conserve energy on hot days. Air conditioners can keep people safe during summer, and there are ways to use them and still conserve energy. -Metro Creative

Business & Professional Guide March 21, 2019
O
wning a business is a goal for many professionals. Being self-employed and having final say over business decisions can give people a sense of satisfaction and professional accomplishment. The small business landscape continues to evolve and expand. The Small Business Administration says that more than 50 percent of the working population is employed in a small business. There are almost 30 million small businesses in the United States, with roughly 540,000 new start-ups each month. While owning a small business can be rewarding, it’s important that prospective business owners recognize that only around one-quarter of
such businesses survive 15 years or more. Taking heed of certain factors and educating themselves about entrepreneurship can help prospective small business owners prepare for and overcome some of the ups and downs of owning their own business. Explore the nature of the business and if there is room in the industry/market for something of its type. Is industry oversaturated? Is there a need for this product or service? Understand who might be your target customer. Identify the people who will be drawn to your product or service, even if it is a small, niche market. Identify the best possible locations for the business. This is true whether the business will
be brick and mortar or strictly an online business. Explore ways to position the company so it will attract as many potential customers as possible. Conduct an analysis of potential competitors to get an idea of the strategies they are employing. It also is helpful to know the other people providing similar products and services so you’ll understand what is necessary to set your business apart. Devise a plan for funding and establish a budget. You will need to properly identify your sources of capital to get the business up and running. If you are not good with numbers, establish who will help you with bookkeeping and accounting to ensure the business stays on track. -Metro Creative

How to hone your time managment skills
O
urs is a busy society where everyone is moving from place to place quite rapidly, whether at school, home or work. As a result, many people may feel that there simply are not enough hours in the day to get it all
done. Quite often people delay certain tasks until the late hours of the night as a way to catch up. But that can be detrimental to health. The National Institute of Health warns that lack of adequate sleep can affect mood, adversely affect relationships, increase anxiety, and possibly contribute to depression. Inadequate sleep is also associated with increased risk of high blood pressure, obesity and heart disease. Rather than tapping into precious hours of shut-eye, men and women can learn how to manage their time better so they complete more tasks during the day, leaving more time to relax and sleep at night. Effective time management begins with these strategies.
attention, address items on the list in order of their priority.
Develop goals Goals do not have to be far-off ideas for the future. They can be easily reached today. Simple goals such as, ‘I want to remove all nonessential paperwork from my desk’can be tackled quickly and without much effort. Goals give a person something to work toward and are important ways to steer you in the right direction. Without goals, you may wander aimlessly. Accomplishing goals of all shapes and sizes gives a feeling of accomplishment.
Avoid distractions Distractions can pull attention away from important tasks at hand. Distractions can be phone calls, text alerts, personal issues, people in the room, and many other things. Figure out how you work best and minimize distractions so that you can fully focus on your priorities.
Set priorities. Begin by setting priorities This involves making a list of all the tasks that need to be completed, and then putting them in order of most essential to least essential. Once you understand where to first devote your
Stop multitasking Unfortunately, multitasking is not the key to getting more things done. In fact, it could actually be hurting performance.
Metro
Research conducted at Stanford University discovered that multitasking is less productive than doing a single thing at a time. You simply cannot put full effort into multiple things at once Ă‘ and something will be short-changed if you try.
Write things down Keeping information floating around your mind is ineffective and can lead to stress. Put things down on paper or make digital notes to keep track of what needs to get done. Set your targets and break each task down to manageable pieces. Physically cross items off your list as they are completed. Time management is a skill that can be learned with practice and focusing on elements of success. -Metro Creative

Effective ways to alleviate job related stress
S
tress affects everyone at some point in their lives and does not discriminate based on gender, nationality, ethnicity, economic status, or age. The American Institute of Stress says job-related stress costs businesses millions of dollars each year due to unanticipated absences. In fact, work is the foremost source of stress for many adults. Although not all stress is bad and stress responses can motivate people to perform more effectively, repeated stress is a problem. The National Institute of Mental Health says routine stress that becomes chronic can suppress immune system functions, disrupt digestion, adversely
affect sleep, and cause abnormal changes in reproductive systems. People who have chronic stress are often prone to frequent and severe viral infections, like colds and the flu. Repetitive stress may be the most difficult to recognize because it often becomes a part of daily life. Managing stress and anxiety involves finding techniques that work for each individual. While not every approach works for everyone, the following are five effective means to managing stress.
a 20-minute exercise session during a stressful time can produce an immediate effect that lasts a few hours.
Deep breathing: Mindful breathing can be effective and only takes 10 minutes. Men and women battling stress can sit in a comfortable position with their eyes closed and imagine themselves in a relaxing place while slowly breathing in and out.
Take a break: Metro
Exercise
Prolonged stress can take a toll on the body.
The American Psychological Association says research continues to
confirm the benefits of exercise in regard to combatting
stress. Regular exercise has long-term benefits, but even
Removing oneself from a stressful situation for a little while can be helpful. A brief break of 15 to 20 minutes can provide a sense of calm.
Behavioral therapy: Harvard Medical School defines cognitive-behavioral therapy, or CBT, as a process of changing unhealthy thinking in order to change emotions. Therapists will identify negative thinking patterns and help patients learn to automatically replace them with healthy or positive thoughts.
Support network: Simply having someone to talk to can help tame stress. People should surround themselves with others they trust who are good listeners. These can be friends, family members or professional therapists. Talking oneself through stressful situations can provide relief. -Metro Creative
How to manage your company’s online reputation
T
oday’s small business owners face unique challenges that businesspeople of yesteryear never had to confront. While the internet has made it possible for even the smallest businesses to have a global footprint, it’s also forced business owners to devote substantial time to managing their online reputations. A company’s online reputation can have a major impact on its ability to survive and thrive. In its 2018 ‘Local Consumer Review Survey,’BrightLocal, a United Kingdom-based company that focuses on the needs of digital marketing agencies and local businesses, found that 91 percent of consumers between the ages of 18 and 34 trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. In addition, the survey found that 57 percent of consumers won’t use a business that has a star rating of fewer than four stars. The BrightLocal survey underscores the effort small business owners must put into managing their companies’ online reputa-
4B
tions. Whether business owners feel their online reputations are warranted or not, ignoring them can greatly affect their bottom lines. The following are a handful of simple ways business owners can manage their companies’ online reputations in the hopes of benefitting their businesses and expanding their customer base.
Don’t ignore negative reviews Small Biz Ahead, a service from the insurance provider The Hartford that aims to help business owners manage and grow their businesses, advises business owners to acknowledge negative reviews. Respond privately to customers, apologizing for their unsatisfactory experience and thanking them for their feedback. When communicating with customers, always keep these communications friendly and constructive. Dismissive, confrontational and/or rude interactions with customers will only further damage your online reputation.
Business & Professional Guide March 21, 2019
Actively monitor your reputation Websites such as Yelp and Google, via its Google Reviews capability, give customers plenty of places to go to share their comments about your business. Stay up-to-date on these, making a concerted effort to monitor your reputation. If you’re open for business seven days a week, chances are customers will be reviewing your business seven days a week. Reach out to customers who had negative experiences as soon as possible, and report any comments you feel violate websites’ standards the moment you see them.
Don’t hesitate to ask customers to edit their reviews When you successfully reach out to customers who left negative reviews, don’t hesitate to ask them to consider editing their reviews. Many customers are happy to update their reviews if issues were promptly and successfully addressed.

Online reputation management is important for today’s business owners. Though managing online reputations can seem like a full-time job, a positive reputation can greatly benefit your bottom line. -Metro Creative
