Neighbors work to keep Goochland man hauling By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Hazel Fleming’s neighbors think the world of him — and they aren’t afraid to say so. This was made perfectly clear on the evening of March 7, as speaker after speaker approached the podium during that evening’s Goochland County Planning Commission meeting. They had come that night to ask the commissioners to vote in favor of a conditional use permit (CUP) that would allow Fleming to continue operating the hauling business he has for the past 30 years from his property on 1701 Manakin Rd. “You could not ask for a better neighbor,” said Orlando Duke, who described Fleming as unfailingly considerate and respectful of those living near his property. Another neighbor described Fleming as one the hardest working men she had ever known, and said he never failed to go out of his way to help someone in need.

obtain the CUP. While the commissioners remained mum on the topic, county planner Greg Garrison did confirm later in the proceedings that there had been just one complaint. To Herman Fleming, who also lives nearby, forcing Fleming to go through the process and threatening his livelihood simply doesn’t make sense, particularly with regard to some of the rules the CUP imposes. “If you’re going to shut down his business on Sunday, shut down everybody’s business,” Fleming said. After a brief discussion, the commissioners ultimately voted unanimously to recommend that the Board of Supervisors approve the request for the CUP.
continued from >1 The CUP that Fleming is seeking would require that the number of trucks on the property be limited to 10, screening be installed on the property, and repair work be done out of sight, all conditions he has agreed to. The reason Fleming needs the permit in the first place, however, has several of his neighbors seeing red. Pam Ottley, who owns a farm directly across from Fleming’s property and says he has helped her countless times over the years, told commissioners that she heard that it was a complaint from a single individual that had forced the county to insist that Fleming

Failing to follow the ordinance may result in a Class 4 misdemeanor conviction for the owner as well as court fines and fees totaling up to $250. Since the adoption of the ordinance, Animal Protection has worked to implement its enforcement, including working with General Services and Parks and Recreation to install signage and verbiage in parks and public spaces. In the com-
ing weeks, the County’s efforts to educate the public will increase through the development and placement of additional and more prominent signage in all County parks. Additionally, the County is working to specifically locate, design, and construct two dog parks, at Hidden Rock and Tucker Park, to allow for some off-leash enjoyment and socialization for dogs and their owners. Commission gives go-ahead for towing operation at former Company 6 station New owner of Broad Street site denies claim he plans to create a ‘junkyard’ there By Roslyn Ryan Editor
The building that once served as the Company 6 Hadensville Fire and Rescue station could finally be getting a new occupant. Earlier this month, James E. Sumrell received approval from the county Planning Commission to move forward with plans to open a towing and auto repair operation at 4746 Broad Street Road.
Sumrell is the owner of Bumpass Towing, and already operates similar facilities in Louisa and Powhatan. In order to open the Goochland location, he will need to secure a conditional use permit (CUP) and meet specific guidelines including screening of the property and restricting the number of vehicles stored there to less than 30. Sumrell told members of the Planning Commission hearing his CUP request that the property, which he recently purchased, offers him fast access to Interstate 64 and allows him to respond quickly when he receives calls from law enforcement about an accident. While Sumrell told commissioners that he had no
intention of turning the property into a junkyard or salvage operation, those who live near the site said they remained skeptical. Several residents urged commissioners to deny Sumrell’s request, including Goochland resident Lena Taylor. “The community could use that property a whole lot better than to use it as a junkyard,” Taylor said, explaining that she and others had appreciated Company 6 allowing residents to use the space to hold community meetings years ago. The property has been vacant since 2017, when Company 6 moved out of the cramped space and into a brand new, 12,000 square foot facility just across Route 250.
Casey Speas, the realtor who handled the sale to Sumrell, told commissioners that the location had been considered as the site of both a restaurant and a day care center at various times, but that neither of those ideas had proved feasible. While pleading his case, Sumrell urged commissioners to consider his other locations, including the former eyesore he previously renovated in Powhatan. “That’s what I do,” Sumrell said. “I take these properties, clean them up, and make then pretty.” The next step for the proposed project will be to go before the county Board of Supervisors, who will issue the final decision on the CUP.

Annual garden tour will highlight county gems Contributed report
The nation’s only statewide house and garden tour will soon showcase three distinctly historic and awe-inspiring neighborhoods in the Richmond metropolitan area, including four properties located on Sabot Hill Plantation in Manakin-Sabot. Each home on the tour, held as part of Historic Garden Week from April 27 to May 4, will fea-
ture flower arrangements created by garden club members and visitors will enjoy exploring the home’s landscapes and beautiful interiors. “The mission of the Richmond Tour is to preserve Virginia’s spring time tradition of opening up the area’s finest homes and gardens,” said Lisa Brennan, one of the Chairs of the program. “We are excited
this year to welcome visitors and give them an up-close view of Richmond’s history and varying landscapes, from urban to pastoral.” Since its inception in 1927, Historic Garden Week has continued to raise money to fund the restoration and preservation of the Commonwealth’s significant historic public gardens. It’s the state’s largest ongoing vol-
unteer effort and is estimated to have had a cumulative impact of $425 million on the state’s economy over the last 45 years. Tickets to the tours and luncheon at The Country Club of Virginia are available now online at www.vagardenweek.org. The tour of the Manakin-Sabot area homes will offer visitors a taste of Goochland County’s rolling hills and picturesque
countryside. Rich in history, this tour will include Sabot Hill, a Georgian-style mansion with formal gardens that are more than 1,000-years-old. The current residence is in the same location as the original 1850s residence but was rebuilt in 1937 after a fire destroyed it in the 1920s. Ben Dover Farm, built in 1853 and of Italianate design,
and National historic landmark and Thomas Jefferson’s childhood home, Tuckahoe Plantation, are also on the tour. Tickets for each tour day are $45 in advance, $55 day of the tour, and $20 for single-site admission. Water, water everywhere— but can trees really drown? By Virginia McCown Contributing Writer
Can trees drown? Yes, they sure can. As spring moves closer, we might witness a few favorites in our yards that simply won’t come back. By the summer months, we’ll have a better idea of our losses caused by too much rain. When folks talk about their trees “drowning” they usually mean the tree roots have been waterlogged for weeks or even months. Tree roots need oxygen. Too much water will eventually kill the roots. “Yes, plants can certainly suffer and even die during periods of extended wet weather or poorly drained soil,” says Jay Wilkerson, horticulturist for the Town of Farmville. “While we cannot control our weather, we can use a few techniques to avoid drowning plants.” Central Virginia is laden with heavy clay soil so amending it with a soil conditioner before planting can help, says Wilkerson. A soil conditioner is not a fertilizer but a mix-
ture of organic and inorganic matter. Commercial soil conditioners such as LeafGro are available for purchase from nurseries. It’s not completely compost, but it’s not peat moss. “Peat moss tends to hold a lot of moisture and would be best used in sandy soils that need help with moisture retention rather than drainage,” advised Wilkerson.
Location, Location, Location! Choose wisely. Is the planting site in a low laying depression that collects standing water after a rain? Are you planting near a downspout or gutter or a runoff area? “There are times when we have to plant in a less than ideal area,” says Wilkerson. “In which case, I usually plant the root ball an inch or two above grade.” Never plant new trees or shrubs below grade because that will collect a lot of excess water and be very slow to dry out.” For further instruction

Invest in the future Certain trees and shrubs can tolerate wet soil better than others. Bald cypress, willows, birch, poplar and some oaks will tolerate wet soil. On the other hand, fruit and nut trees prefer well drained soil and don’t tolerate boggy soils. “Since growing an orchard is an investment in time that will take years to mature, it is probably best to choose a location with full sun and good
drainage,” advised Wilkerson. Always avoid excess mulching particularly overloading it around the bases of trees.
The Waiting Game “All we can do now is be patient and give things plenty of time to break dormancy this spring,” says Wilkerson. “I’m sure certain perennials and even some shrubs will be lost but I do not expect it to be catastrophic.” Established and especially native plants are surprisingly resilient. Fingers crossed! In gardening we plan for the worst and hope for the best. Dinner for doggy? Not exactly By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
W
e’ve all been there. The waiter arrives with your food and you immediately realize the portions are enormous and you’ll never be able to finish that over-packed plate. No big deal. When everyone is finished eating, you politely ask for a doggie bag to take home leftovers that are more likely to end up in your stomach than your canines. Easy, peasy, right? True enough unless you have kids from another generation. “He means a to-go box,” my daughter quickly told the server. Minutes later, my uneaten portions came back to the table in a neatly-foiled box, packaged perfectly for the ride home. “Why do you call that a doggie bag?” one of my children asked. It suddenly hit me that the term doggie bag was foreign to them -- as a bitcoin is to me -- a remnant of days gone by when subtlety ruled and Emily Post reminded us that humans don’t take leftovers home from a restaurant. Now, I’m not sure about manners, but it always seemed odd to me that people asked for doggie bags when it was more than obvious the leftovers were for them. But, it seems, at some point in our evolving culture, the thought of wrapping or handling leftovers and sticking them in your pocket
became offensive, and people felt a need to invent the doggie cover story. I learned that what I considered a true piece of American culture was actually invented by Romans who regularly wrapped leftovers and took them home for later enjoyment. But, in modern times, the practice is truly American. The doggie bag became an American institution during World War II when food shortages were real and people didn’t waste much to ensure a united front against the enemy. Restaurants routinely provided customers with bags with cute names like Bones for Bowser or Don’t Forget Fido and cute pictures of cocker spaniels. You heard me right. Cocker spaniels once held the same position of popularity as today’s Labrador Retriever, but that’s an observation that can wait for another column. So, when did doggie bags become to-go boxes? I’m not sure but it somehow seems like a logical progression to me, an see Dinner > 7

Spring is best time to get out and enjoy Goochland By Roslyn Ryan Editor
I have a confession to make, although to those who already know me this will come as no surprise: I am not a fan of winter. That general dislike runs pretty much the whole gamut of things related to the season, from cold weather to less daylight to naked trees (no, I don’t hate Christmas, but I would certainly be in favor of moving it to July). This year, right around the start of February, I found a small measure of solace in playing recordings of birds singing in the forest while I worked at my desk, and for a few blissful minutes I managed to forget the cold, gray weather outside. Yes, perhaps this is a bit extreme — I’ll admit that. But I’m also sure I’m not the only person in this neck of the woods who was more than a little excited these past few weeks to see the first true signs of spring popping up. As it often happens, it’s easy to miss the signs at first. But then, suddenly, it’s as if the trees simply can’t wait another second to burst forth and everything begins greening and blooming with abandon. Here in Goochland, with so many beautiful recreational spots, getting out and enjoying the spring could not possee Spring > 7

Dinner continued from >6 attempt to mean what we say rather than sugarcoat a request. I’m not sure what motivates us to offer such minor deceptions as calling a leftovers container a doggie bag. Even more confusing, why would anyone want to conceal their desire to eat the food they purchased in the privacy of their own home. I’d like to think I’m above the pressures that those old customs could present, and I never felt embarrassed to ask for a doggie bag, or provide one for that matter. During my 10-year career

as a bartender at the Tobacco Company, I saw customers regularly leave the restaurant with one of those coated white bags with the cute puppy emblazoned on the outside. I also saw the most refined of patrons stuffing rolls into their purse or pocket. The doggie bag seemed more, let’s say, mannerly. I quickly realized you sometimes have to let go of the past, and, from now on, I’ll request a to-go box and leave with the same leftovers assured I have offended or misled no one, or appeared more like a dinosaur than a rapping dad. ing the reasoning of why people would request doggie bags for food that was clearly intended for them. They couldn’t understand why someone would be embarrassed to ask for containers to take home food. And, come to think of it, neither can I. It goes to prove you learn something new every day, and one is never too old to change. My kids seemed relieved I had retired the term’s usage, but quickly decided to dig deeper. “We’re glad you got that straight, Dad, but why do you call the grocery store Safeway?” I had no answer.

Spring continued from >6 sibly be easier. Thanks to the work of the county’s amazing Parks and Recreation staff, Goochland residents have their choice of seven different parks to enjoy, all of them beautifully maintained with various amenities for all ages to enjoy. There also are so many lovely winding roads to travel— windows rolled down, of course, to enjoy the fresh air — and so many reminders of why keeping Goochland predominantly rural is a worthwhile goal indeed. I hope to see plenty of our wonderful readers out and about as we celebrate spring and enjoy the wellearned reward for having slogged through another long winter. I ll be out there for sure, smelling as many flowers as I can and reveling in the sounds of the birds I no longer need an internet connection to hear.

Boys soccer surges past Buckingham 3-1 By Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor
G
OOCHLAND – Matthew Lewis emerged ahead of his Buckingham pursuers. He received the kick from Goochland teammate Nick Lowery, and he looked to match up against the goalie in front of him. The ball seemed to get away from him near the post. Lewis reached out with his foot and brought the ball right back. He maneuvered around to the right side. “I just made a good run to the sideline, able to stay onsides, keep the defender behind me so he couldn’t get in front of me, able to take it in, keep him behind me,” Lewis said. “I felt him coming up on my side, did a little move, placed it.” Lewis sent the ball into the net to elevate Goochland into the lead. “I came out in the second half with the mentality of: we’ve got to beat this team,” Lewis said. “There’s no way we’re gonna lose.” Three second-half goals ultimately carried the Bulldogs past visiting Buckingham 3-1 in Wednesday night’s competitive duel. “Buckingham definitely has a way better team right now – they definitely put pressure on us the whole first half, and then in the second half I just told the guys to calm down and…instead of [Buckingham] being the aggressors we became aggressive and then we started playing our game,” Goochland head coach Jaime Lopez said. “It took a little bit, but we got it together at the end.” After they gave up a goal on an arching kick by Buckingham’s Emmanuel Whittington with less than two minutes remaining before halftime, the Bulldogs opened the new half by zipping at fullspeed towards the goal with Caleb Moyer finishing off the drive to tie the match at 1-1. Lewis outdueled Buckingham’s defenders to notch the go-ahead mark for a 2-1 lead, and the speedy Hunter Willms, after seeing several of his shots sail past or over the goal earlier in the game, broke through on a fiery kick that zipped the ball into the lower left corner of the net to give his team the insurance goal. The Bulldogs’ 3-0 second-half helped them overcome multiple near-misses throughout the contest. “We’ve just got to learn how to finish,” Lopez said. “It’s just a work in progress.” Willms, Lowery and Jacob Hayward each contributed an assist in Wednesday’s game. “As a team we could’ve played a little bit better – me personally, I could’ve played a lot better,” Lewis said of Wednesday’s game. “But I believe, we get some things going, we’ll be able to pick it up in the next few games.”

First Team All-State Staff Report

Goochland Softball’s Lexi Hooe throws a pitch in the Bulldogs’ March 19 away game at Powhatan High School.
Goochland eyeing first victory Staff Report
POWHATAN – The Goochland softball team went winless in its first three games of the 2019 season, but was slated to return home to play James River District opponent Cumberland on Tuesday, March 26,
weather permitting. In its March 19 game, Goochland challenged Powhatan early, cutting the Indians’ lead to 4-3 on an RBI single from Carleigh Gilstrap and a two-run double from Lexi Hooe. But the Indians pulled away on nine unanswered runs to win 13-3
in 5 innings. Thursday’s game at Buckingham was rained-out and postponed to April 29. Goochland will continue its three-game home stretch versus Amelia County on Wednesday, March 27 at 5 p.m. and Bluestone on Thursday, March 28 at 5 p.m.
GOOCHLAND – Deion Harwood achieved First Team All-State honors once again following another historic season for Goochland Boys Basketball in 2018-19. Harwood, a senior, was one of his team’s top scorers and rebounders, and he helped lead the Bulldogs to the Class 2 state semifinals - the furthest the Goochland Boys Basketball program has ever gone - on a 22-point, 16-rebound effort in the Bulldogs’ Class 2 state quarterfinals victory over George Mason (60-47). Harwood also scored his 1,000th high school basketball career point this year on a three-pointer that he made in the Bulldogs’ 71-31 home game win over Central Lunenburg. Harwood was a part of the Bulldogs’ 2018 and 2019 Region 3A Championships, and he helped his team win the 2019 James River District tournament title and district regular season championship as well. Harwood also made First Team All-State as a junior in 2018. Nick Vandeloecht/Goochland Gazette

him on second. The Indians strung together five runs in the sixth inning to pull away and win 6-0. Pitcher Jackson Raines threw 45 strikes on 71 pitches and struck out 5 batters for the Bulldogs. Goochland’s Thursday home game versus Buckingham was postponed to April 29. The Bulldogs next go to play Amelia on Wednesday, March 27 at 5 p.m. before hosting Bluestone on Thursday, March 28 at 5 p.m.
POWHATAN – Goochland Baseball took back-toback shutout losses against Nottoway and Powhatan and was slated to play Cumberland on Tuesday, March 26, weather permitting. In its March 19 game, Goochland challenged Powhatan early, pitching two scoreless innings before Powhatan scored a run in the bottom of the third. Cole Bashinski doubled to Nick Vandeloecht/Goochland Gazette put himself as the tying run on Goochland Baseball’s Andrew base, but Powhatan notched Jones connects with the three straight outs to strand incoming pitch.
Goochland Boys Basketball’s Deion Harwood goes for a layup in a Bulldogs’ 2018-19 regular season home game.

Goochland Pet Lovers announces new leadership, mission for group Contributed report
With new leadership and a new mission, the Goochland Pet Lovers (GPL) has closed its books on a very successful Capital Campaign. Under the direction of Wayne Dementi, Cindy Pryor and Tom Winfree, GPL raised over $1.6 million to support the building of the new Animal Shelter at the corner of Fairgrounds Road and
Hidden Rock Road. As construction progresses on the new animal shelter and GPL transitions to operations, the fundraising continues to support its new mission of promoting animal welfare through protection, adoption, community engagement, and education. The new officers of Goochland Pet Lovers are: Sara Grattan – Chair, Sarah
Perkinson – Vice-Chair, Janet Dalton – Treasurer, Mary Clark Lind – Secretary, Tom Winfree – Immediate Past Chair, Richard Verlander – Member at Large and Diana Barden – Executive Director. To join the mailing list and stay current on news of the shelter dedication and countywide events, visit the website at www.goochlandpetlovers.com.

Run air conditioners without wasting energy
F
ew people can make it through the dog days of summer without turning on their air conditioners. Men and women concerned about the environment and conserving energy may try to avoid using their air conditioners, but doing so on especially hot days can be challenging and potentially even deadly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that roughly 600 people die from complications related to extreme heat each year. Heat stroke can result when a body overheats after prolonged exposure to or physical exertion in high temperatures. The Mayo Clinic notes that the condition is most common in summer and that a lack of air conditioning during periods of sustained hot weather is a risk for heat stroke.
Conserving energy during summer is a noble pursuit, but people should not jeopardize their health in an effort to conserve energy. Air conditioners might not be the most eco-friendly appliances, but there are ways to run them without wasting energy.
systems may rest easier knowing they are only paying to cool certain parts of their homes overnight. Zoned systems come equipped with programmable thermostats that homeowners can adjust when they go to bed, ensuring they won’t be cooling empty living rooms and basements overnight.
Use a window unit or zoned system overnight The U.S. Department of Energy notes that central air conditioners are more efficient than room air conditioners, which are typically installed in windows. But central air conditioning systems that are not zoned may be cooling empty rooms overnight. Apartment dwellers may find window units less wasteful, while homeowners who can afford to install zoned air conditioning
Metro
Have units serviced before summer begins. Well-maintained central air conditioners will work more efficiently.
Routine maintenance of air conditioning systems will ensure that systems aren’t working harder, and therefore consuming more energy, than necessary to cool a home.
Let fans and air conditioners work together The DOE notes that using fans and air conditioners simultaneously is an effective way to circulate cool air throughout a home. By running both fans and air conditioners at the same, the air conditioners won’t have to be run as long or as hard as they would if no fans were turned on.
Conserve energy in other ways
Because the dangers of heat stroke and heat exhaustion are so considerable, men and women should never keep their air conditioners off on hot days simply to conserve energy. Finding safer alternatives to conserving energy on hot days can be just as effective and won’t put consumers’ health at risk. Unplug appliances that are not being used and prepare cold dinners so ovens that can make home interiors feel hotter won’t need to be turned on. In addition, take advantage of the longer daylight hours in summer and keep lights off until the sun goes down. These are safe ways to conserve energy on hot days. Air conditioners can keep people safe during summer, and there are ways to use them and still conserve energy. -Metro Creative

O
wning a business is a goal for many professionals. Being self-employed and having final say over business decisions can give people a sense of satisfaction and professional accomplishment. The small business landscape continues to evolve and expand. The Small Business Administration says that more than 50 percent of the working population is employed in a small business. There are almost 30 million small businesses in the United States, with roughly 540,000 new start-ups each month. While owning a small business can be rewarding, it’s important that prospective business owners recognize that only around one-quarter of
such businesses survive 15 years or more. Taking heed of certain factors and educating themselves about entrepreneurship can help prospective small business owners prepare for and overcome some of the ups and downs of owning their own business. Explore the nature of the business and if there is room in the industry/market for something of its type. Is industry oversaturated? Is there a need for this product or service? Understand who might be your target customer. Identify the people who will be drawn to your product or service, even if it is a small, niche market. Identify the best possible locations for the business. This is true whether the business will
be brick and mortar or strictly an online business. Explore ways to position the company so it will attract as many potential customers as possible. Conduct an analysis of potential competitors to get an idea of the strategies they are employing. It also is helpful to know the other people providing similar products and services so you’ll understand what is necessary to set your business apart. Devise a plan for funding and establish a budget. You will need to properly identify your sources of capital to get the business up and running. If you are not good with numbers, establish who will help you with bookkeeping and accounting to ensure the business stays on track. -Metro Creative

How to hone your time managment skills
O
urs is a busy society where everyone is moving from place to place quite rapidly, whether at school, home or work. As a result, many people may feel that there simply are not enough hours in the day to get it all
done. Quite often people delay certain tasks until the late hours of the night as a way to catch up. But that can be detrimental to health. The National Institute of Health warns that lack of adequate sleep can affect mood, adversely affect relationships, increase anxiety, and possibly contribute to depression. Inadequate sleep is also associated with increased risk of high blood pressure, obesity and heart disease. Rather than tapping into precious hours of shut-eye, men and women can learn how to manage their time better so they complete more tasks during the day, leaving more time to relax and sleep at night. Effective time management begins with these strategies.
attention, address items on the list in order of their priority.
Develop goals Goals do not have to be far-off ideas for the future. They can be easily reached today. Simple goals such as, ‘I want to remove all nonessential paperwork from my desk’can be tackled quickly and without much effort. Goals give a person something to work toward and are important ways to steer you in the right direction. Without goals, you may wander aimlessly. Accomplishing goals of all shapes and sizes gives a feeling of accomplishment.
Avoid distractions Distractions can pull attention away from important tasks at hand. Distractions can be phone calls, text alerts, personal issues, people in the room, and many other things. Figure out how you work best and minimize distractions so that you can fully focus on your priorities.
Set priorities. Begin by setting priorities This involves making a list of all the tasks that need to be completed, and then putting them in order of most essential to least essential. Once you understand where to first devote your
Stop multitasking Unfortunately, multitasking is not the key to getting more things done. In fact, it could actually be hurting performance.
Metro
Research conducted at Stanford University discovered that multitasking is less productive than doing a single thing at a time. You simply cannot put full effort into multiple things at once Ă‘ and something will be short-changed if you try.
Write things down Keeping information floating around your mind is ineffective and can lead to stress. Put things down on paper or make digital notes to keep track of what needs to get done. Set your targets and break each task down to manageable pieces. Physically cross items off your list as they are completed. Time management is a skill that can be learned with practice and focusing on elements of success. -Metro Creative

Effective ways to alleviate job related stress
S
tress affects everyone at some point in their lives and does not discriminate based on gender, nationality, ethnicity, economic status, or age. The American Institute of Stress says job-related stress costs businesses millions of dollars each year due to unanticipated absences. In fact, work is the foremost source of stress for many adults. Although not all stress is bad and stress responses can motivate people to perform more effectively, repeated stress is a problem. The National Institute of Mental Health says routine stress that becomes chronic can suppress immune system functions, disrupt digestion, adversely
affect sleep, and cause abnormal changes in reproductive systems. People who have chronic stress are often prone to frequent and severe viral infections, like colds and the flu. Repetitive stress may be the most difficult to recognize because it often becomes a part of daily life. Managing stress and anxiety involves finding techniques that work for each individual. While not every approach works for everyone, the following are five effective means to managing stress.
a 20-minute exercise session during a stressful time can produce an immediate effect that lasts a few hours.
Deep breathing: Mindful breathing can be effective and only takes 10 minutes. Men and women battling stress can sit in a comfortable position with their eyes closed and imagine themselves in a relaxing place while slowly breathing in and out.
Take a break: Metro
Exercise
Prolonged stress can take a toll on the body.
The American Psychological Association says research continues to
confirm the benefits of exercise in regard to combatting
stress. Regular exercise has long-term benefits, but even
Removing oneself from a stressful situation for a little while can be helpful. A brief break of 15 to 20 minutes can provide a sense of calm.
Behavioral therapy: Harvard Medical School defines cognitive-behavioral therapy, or CBT, as a process of changing unhealthy thinking in order to change emotions. Therapists will identify negative thinking patterns and help patients learn to automatically replace them with healthy or positive thoughts.
Support network: Simply having someone to talk to can help tame stress. People should surround themselves with others they trust who are good listeners. These can be friends, family members or professional therapists. Talking oneself through stressful situations can provide relief. -Metro Creative
How to manage your company’s online reputation
T
oday’s small business owners face unique challenges that businesspeople of yesteryear never had to confront. While the internet has made it possible for even the smallest businesses to have a global footprint, it’s also forced business owners to devote substantial time to managing their online reputations. A company’s online reputation can have a major impact on its ability to survive and thrive. In its 2018 ‘Local Consumer Review Survey,’BrightLocal, a United Kingdom-based company that focuses on the needs of digital marketing agencies and local businesses, found that 91 percent of consumers between the ages of 18 and 34 trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. In addition, the survey found that 57 percent of consumers won’t use a business that has a star rating of fewer than four stars. The BrightLocal survey underscores the effort small business owners must put into managing their companies’ online reputa-
4B
tions. Whether business owners feel their online reputations are warranted or not, ignoring them can greatly affect their bottom lines. The following are a handful of simple ways business owners can manage their companies’ online reputations in the hopes of benefitting their businesses and expanding their customer base.
Don’t ignore negative reviews Small Biz Ahead, a service from the insurance provider The Hartford that aims to help business owners manage and grow their businesses, advises business owners to acknowledge negative reviews. Respond privately to customers, apologizing for their unsatisfactory experience and thanking them for their feedback. When communicating with customers, always keep these communications friendly and constructive. Dismissive, confrontational and/or rude interactions with customers will only further damage your online reputation.
Business & Professional Guide March 21, 2019
Actively monitor your reputation Websites such as Yelp and Google, via its Google Reviews capability, give customers plenty of places to go to share their comments about your business. Stay up-to-date on these, making a concerted effort to monitor your reputation. If you’re open for business seven days a week, chances are customers will be reviewing your business seven days a week. Reach out to customers who had negative experiences as soon as possible, and report any comments you feel violate websites’ standards the moment you see them.
Don’t hesitate to ask customers to edit their reviews When you successfully reach out to customers who left negative reviews, don’t hesitate to ask them to consider editing their reviews. Many customers are happy to update their reviews if issues were promptly and successfully addressed.
