Teen’s idea could help prevent hot car deaths By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Last year in the United States, 51 children died after being left in hot cars, including a 17-month old in Goochland last August. Now, an area middle school student is hoping her innovation can someday help prevent any further tragedies like this from occurring. Last month, Midlothian Middle School student Hannah Rhudy, 14, briefed county supervisors on the

BabyIn BabyOut project, which she founded last summer and recently helped bring to Goochland. In response to a rise in infants and young children dying after being forgotten in hot vehicles, Rhudy worked with a graphic designer to create brightly colored hangtags for parents and caregivers to use in their vehicles. The tags are designed to be hung from a vehicle’s rearview mirror and flipped over whenever a child is placed in, or removed from, the vehicle.

For Goochland resident Wendy Hobbs, serving as an advocate is nothing new. Now however, with her recent announcement that she is running for the District 2 Board of Supervisors seat, she is hoping to help serve the needs of her community in a whole new way. Hobbs said she first shared her intention to seek office with fellow members of Jerusalem Baptist Church, and received an outpouring of support for the plan. And while she said she initially wrestled with the idea of stepping into politics, an area where she has no formal HOBBS first-hand experience, Hobbs said it didn’t take long for her to push any doubts aside. Hobbs said she soon realized that many of the skills she would need to be a successful supervisor — including working closely with fellow board members, critically analyzing budgets and responding quickly to concerns as they arose —
