or Austin Payne, it was the trip a lifetime, the chance to attend a world-class event surrounded by people who, like him, have spent the better part of their young lives competing in robotics programs through their schools. Talking about his recent trip to Detroit, Michigan to participate in the FIRST World Championship, Payne, the Drive Coach for Goochland High School’s FIRST Robotics Team 2106, still can’t help but relive the indescribable excitement of the experience. The Goochland County Republican Committee held a mass meeting on May 7 to decide which candidates to nominate for the coming county election to be held in November. Among those nominated were Michael Caudill for Commonwealth’s Attorney; Susan Lascolette for District 1; Neil Spoonhower for Supervisor of District 2; John Lumpkins for Supervisor of District 3; Don Sharpe for Supervisor of District 4; and Ken Peterson for Supervisor of District 5. Pam Duncan, the county’s current Chief Deputy Treasurer, received the nomination for Treasurer and Jonathan Lyle received the nomination for the Monacan Soil and Water Conservation District seat. “In Flanders Fields the poppies blow between the crosses row on row…” is a line from the poem In Flanders Fields by Lt. Col. John McCrae. It doesn’t matter that this poem was written in 1915 during World War I, the sentiment and sacrifice of our Military remains the same today. Memorial Day is the day Americans set aside to honor those brave men and women who met a tragic end during times of war. The red poppy has become the national symbol of remembrance,

County seeking feedback on noise regulation issue Contributed report

The Goochland County Board of Supervisors is inviting citizens and businesses to share their thoughts on noise regulation at a Noise Regulation Listening Session on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at the Central High School

Cultural and Educational Complex. From 6:30 to 8 p.m., citizens and businesses will be encouraged to share their thoughts with county staff as the Board of Supervisors considers whether residents want additional ordinances to regulate noise in the future. Currently the county does not have a specific Noise Ordinance law to enforce and is looking to gain feedback from citizens and businesses regarding a potential ordinance. “Recently the county heard from a few citizens regarding concerns about noise,” said John

Budesky, Goochland County Administrator. “We recognize there are perspectives on both sides of noise issues, the listening session is an opportunity for citizens and businesses to share their thoughts and concerns on noise regulation.” The county is specifically interested in learning: Are there certain noises citizens have concerns about that they would like to see regulated? Do citizens like the flexibility to be unregulated against noises generated on their own property? For more information on this event, please contact Goochland County at (804)556-5811. The Central High School Cultural and Educational Complex is located at 2748 Dogtown Road in Goochland.

Letters to the Editor Sheriff’s Office spring program hit the mark

This group of Goochland County teachers and staff recently were honored by GCPS for their hard work and dedication to the school division.

Local teachers impact untold number By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Recently, Goochland County Public Schools honored its 2019 Teachers of the Year, offering several local educators a chance to know just how highly the division thinks of their work. Looking over the names of those honored, it was not hard to suspect that each and every one of them had themselves at one time been the student of a wonderful teacher. Having had quite a few great ones myself, I have never forgotten their dedication to their jobs, or their constant encouragement as I made my way — sometimes more successfully than other times — through elementary school, middle school, high school and college.

For so many of us, our earliest memory of a teacher is the one who greeted us on that first scary day of kindergarten, that individual who reassured us that this was indeed the beginning of a wonderful and exciting journey. Fast forward a few years, and our teachers became the people who were constantly challenging us, pushing us to do better than we thought we could. If it was a teacher who first pointed out that you seemed to have a special talent for a particular thing, you are not alone: often it is our teachers who help convince us that our small, early successes might put us on the path to something much greater. I have had a number of wonderful editors over the years, but perhaps the piece of writ-

ing advice I return to more than any other came from a teacher I had in college years ago: Sometimes the key to the best work, he told me, is just staying in the chair until you can create something you’re proud of — don’t get out of the chair until you have it. One of the most wonderful parts of my job is getting the opportunity to ask very successful people how they got that way, and I don’t think I could count on all my fingers and toes the number of times people have told me that it was a teacher who first inspired them to pursue what would eventually become their life’s work. On many other occasions, I have had people tell me that it was a teacher who first noticed that see Teachers > 7

Dear Editor, We would like to express our gratitude to the Goochland Sheriff’s Dept. for hosting the Spring 2019 Citizen’s Academy. Although graduates of the 12-week program are not qualified for duty, we acquired a greater awareness and appreciation of the difficult challenges Officers face each day. Participants came excited to learn more about the multi-faceted Sheriff s Office. Topics covered were gang awareness, CSX policing, crime scene investigations, scams and fraud, traffic and DUI stops and animal control. Highlights were field trips to the Henrico Co. jail, Dept. of Corrections shoot/don t shoot simulator, K-9 demo and our upcoming Sheriff ride along this summer. The effort and time invested into this well-planned program was incredible. The Academy was taught by members of the Sheriff s Office staff and civilian personnel. Special thanks to Sheriff James Agnew, Sgt. Steven Creasey, Major Donald Bewkes, School Resource Officers Deputy R. Leabough, Deputy S. Leabough, Investigator John Lancaster, Special Agent Mike East, Trooper Kirk Umberger, Investigative Sgt. Mike Blackwood, Investigator Shawn Whitlock, APS Director Tim Clough, Deputy Shawn Creasey, Sgt. Greg Bock and K-9 Chase, Sgt. Joe Warren, Cpl. Gabe Moupin, dispatchers and many many others who volunteered their time. We looked forward to every session and left feeling like part of the family. Walt and Patty Marria Goochland

Creasey is right person to serve as local sheriff Dear Editor, This letter serves as my strong endorsement of Steven Creasey as see Letters > page 7

Letters continued from >6 the next Sheriff of Goochland County. I am proud to offer my full support to Steven, a true son of Goochland and a life-long resident of the County. As the only candidate in this sheriff’s race who has ever served the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office, Steven has risen through the ranks, beginning as a dispatcher and now having served as a sergeant for over 10 years. Sheriff Agnew has served our county well for over 27 years and is now retiring. I thank him for his service. With new leadership comes new ideas. Despite serving under Sheriff Agnew for the last 24 years, Steven Creasey is his own man, full of enthusiasm for the future of the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office. Steven brings with him a unique perspective of the history of the Sheriff’s Office as well as a clear vision for new and innovative opportunities for law enforcement in Goochland County. Not only has Steven given his entire professional career in service to Goochland County and her citizens but, Steven has been a continuous volunteer firefighter and EMT with Goochland County FireRescue since he was 17 years old. I am supporting Steven Creasey as the next Sheriff of Goochland County because he knows our county, he is a true professional, he has a heart for service to others but, most of all, because of his humble commitment and loyalty to the people of his county… Goochland County.

Teachers continued from >6 they were not living up to their potential and offered them the guidance to turn things around.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, As a lifelong Republican and 40 year resident of Goochland County I dutifully showed up for the Republican Mass Meeting on May 15 wearing my MAGA hat and was horrified by the spectacle I witnessed. The assembly of about 500 outstanding Goochland Citizens looked like a coronation of Steve Creasey as our next Sheriff for life. Since I am a Levin White supporter, the scene at the mass meeting was depressing until I realized the crowd only represented about 2.5 percent of Goochland’s population. I think Steve Creasey did an outstanding job of getting his supporters out. It seemed like a vast majority of the mass meeting participants had a Creasey shirt, hat, or sticker. I have attended a lot of political rallies and was very amazed and impressed by Creasey s ability to pull this off. I couldn’t tolerate the hoopla and poor Republican sound system so I left early to get a Singapore Sling and don’t know what transpired during the Republican meeting. But I will tell all Goochland residents, be careful what you ask for. Steve Creasey may be fully qualified on paper to be Sheriff and a dapper young

personality, but he is not the best qualified person to be Sheriff by a long shot. Steve Creasey s local name identification and family connection with former Supervisor Ned Creasey should not influence his advancement to Sheriff. Goochland residents should examine all the qualifications of the candidates for Sheriff very carefully. The election of a Sheriff is a very important event. While at the University of Georgia studying for a Forestry Degree in the 1960s, I took a graduate course in Political Science. One thing emblazoned on my mind is that historically a Sheriff is the Boss of a County because he knows where all the residents and politicians skeletons are buried. So that is why it is good to have turnover in Sheriffs. Steve Creasy has worked in the Sheriff s department for 24 years. He already knows where all the skeletons are buried. So he may be qualified for advancement to Sheriff but not the best choice. We should want a totally unbiased and unpolitical new Sheriff. Steve Creasey s 24 years in the Sheriff s dept will not result in unbiased perspectives during citizen contacts. Creasey already knows where most of the local skeletons are buried. At 71 years old and frequent traveler, last month in Egypt, I can say there is no better place to live than in Goochland. I only hope Goochland residents will look closely at the qualifications and experiences of our candidates for Sheriff and make a good decision. Art Bachman Gum Spring

As we near the end of yet another school year, I — like so many others — find myself looking back and remembering not just all the wonderful teachers I’ve had, but also the ones

I’ve been fortunate enough to know. May they never forget the impact they’ve had, or all the lives they have changed for the better.

Please join me in supporting Steven Creasey as the next Sheriff of Goochland County. We can count on Steven’s loyalty to what is just and right for Goochland. Sincerely, Matt Toney Goochland

FISHER for Sheriff I want to thank everyone who came out May 15 for the Goochland Republican Mass Meeting. It was a beautiful evening outside. Benedictine wins 2019 state championship Senior Cadets reflect on elite achievement By Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor

COLONIAL HEIGHTS - When Jay Woolfolk threw out the runner headed to first base in the top of the seventh inning, a collective goal was achieved as the players and coaches of Benedictine Baseball stepped off of Shepherd Stadium’s field as the 2019 Division I VISAA state champions, 7-4 over St. Christopher’s. Their triumph added an exclamation mark to eight storied high school careers that concluded beneath the stadium lights in Colonial Heights. Seniors Tre Akande, Jamari Baylor, Jack Carpin, Brett Cook, Wyatt DeLoria, Casey Green, Kyle Hendricks and Alex Markus were all part of the Cadets going 28-2 and winning the state title. “I think the team was a little bit tighter maybe overall,” Benedictine coach Sean Ryan said, “and the seniors had a lot to do with that.” Benedictine’s standout senior class shared their thoughts on what it meant to win the state championship – and what made their teammates and coaches special.

Goochland earns no. 1 seed with win vs. Amelia By Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor

GOOCHLAND - Austin Rose had stepped back up to the plate after taking a called strikeout in his previous at-bat. He and his team had fallen behind Amelia 2-1 in the top of the third inning, and with a teammate on base and two strikes against him, the senior catcher looked to reverse his team’s fortunes. The pitch came barreling in from the mound and he smashed it away. The ball sailed far, high and over the fence, with Rose’s 2-run homer catapulting Goochland Baseball back into the lead as he Nick Vandeloecht/Goochland Gazette rounded the bases. 9 Goochland students take collegiate step Staff Report

GOOCHLAND - Goochland High School’s Athletic Commitment Day celebrated 9 Goochland student-athletes who are taking their playing careers to the collegiate level. Goochland Girls Basketball’s Lanaysia Gonzalez and Goochland Baseball’s Zach Potts are headed to Lynchburg College. While Gonzalez was instrumental in helping her Bulldogs achieve a 17-10 record and reach the Region 2A semifinals, Potts has been part of a varsity baseball unit that concluded the regular season on a 14-6 record and a top seed in the Region 2A tournament. While Lynchburg Women’s Basketball looks to improve upon a 13-13 season in 2018-19, Lynchburg Baseball will aim to improve upon a 19-22 campaign in 2019. History-making boys basketball standout Deion Harwood is taking his collegiate career to Eastern Mennonite. Harwood helped Goochland Boys Basketball set school records with 23 wins in 2019 and a 21-game win streak. Harwood, who this season scored over 1,000 points, helped his team win championships across the James River District regular season, the James River District tournament and the Region 2A tournament, as well as reach the Class 2 state semifinals - a program-best. Eastern Mennonite Men’s Basketball will look to improve upon a 10-16 season from 2018-19. Goochland’s Athletic Commitment Day also celebrated five of the seniors who helped lift the perennial powerhouse of Goochland Football achieve 14 wins in a season for the first time since 2011 and make an appearance in the state championship game for the first time since the Bulldogs won it all in 2012. Jacob Massey and Perry Snead-Johnson are headed to Randolph-Macon, Jonathan White and Tyler May are headed to Hampden-Sydney and Jacob Hayward is headed to Bridgewater

Goochland High School celebrated nine Goochland student-athletes who are taking their playing careers to the collegiate level: Zach Potts (Lynchburg baseball; seated, from left), Lanaysia Gonzalez (Lynchburg women’s basketball), Ryan Bernstine (Virginia Tech men’s tennis), Jacob Hayward (Bridgewater football; standing, from left), Deion Harwood (Eastern Mennonite men’s basketball), Jacob Massey (Randolph-Macon football), Perry Snead-Johnson (Randolph-Macon football), Jonathan White (Hampden-Sydney football) and Tyler May (Hampden-Sydney football).

College. Randolph-Macon Football overall in 2018 went 9-3, Bridgewater went 6-4 and Hampden-Sydney went 4-5. Lynchburg, Eastern Mennonite, RandolphMacon, Hampden-Sydney and Bridgewater are all members of the NCAA Division III Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Additionally, four-time boys tennis state champion Ryan Bernstine, signed to NCAA Division I school Virginia Tech. Bernstine went to his first Virginia Tech football game when he was around 7 or 8, and since then, he and his family have tried to go to at least two football games there every year.. “I just love the school and love the town,” Bernstine said. “I haven’t had any bad experiences with it.” Both the school and the game of tennis are shared Bernstine family traditions. Both of Ryan’s parents went to Virginia Tech. His dad

Hopefully, all the coaches and what they’ve done and what they’ve done to our program, it will continue and we’ll be a good program for many years to come...I can’t say enough about our coaches. They’ve just been really supportive and really enthusiastic all the way through the ups and downs, and it just really helped us out a lot this season, and we did it!

“The players are great, the coaches I’m super-excited to be working with,” Ryan said of Virginia Tech’s Men’s Tennis team. “It’s going to be exciting – hopefully [Chase and I] will play some doubles together and I’m just super excited to be a part of the team with him. It’s going to be fun.” Ryan has enjoyed being a part of Goochland Boys Tennis, with whom he’s seen plentiful success from earning the 2018 singles title to winning doubles state championships with brother Chase and 2018 partner Max Presley. “Just being a part of a team is always fun, because I don’t get to do that outside of high school,” Ryan said. “The team aspect is very fun and…the guys are super-fun to play with.” Ryan on May 18 added another accolade to his name when he won the Region 2A singles championship over his opponent from Poquoson on sets of 6-0 and 6-1.

Ryan’s older brother, multi-year state champion and former state title winning doubles partner Chase currently plays for the Hokies. “It’s super exciting – I’m just ready for the next chapter,” Bernstine said, “ready for Tech.” Ryan’s been playing tennis competitively since he was 8, but his days on the court stretch back before that time. Chase, who won the state singles championship from 2015 to 2017 and earned doubles titles in 2016 and 2017 with Jacob Webb and brother Ryan, has played a central role in shaping Ryan’s journey, not only challenging him at the high school level (Chase defeated Ryan for the 2017 state singles title) but also serving as Ryan’s practice partner every day up until he left for college. Ryan will get to reunite with his brother as teammates once again while representing the Hokies at the NCAA Division I level.
