honor during a ceremony on May 21 at the Post Hall. “Sgt. Blackwood has proven to be a tremendous asset to the sheriff’s office and the citizens of Goochland since he was hired here in October 2016,” said Goochland Sheriff Jim Agnew in letter nominating Blackwood for the honor. A graduate of the University of Saint Thomas in Houston, Texas, Blackwood entered the United States Marine Corps Officers Candidate School in 1979 and served as a Marine Officer in several deployments, most notably as the Officer in
Charge of Communications for the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit operating on naval ships deployed in the Mediterranean. He would go on to attain the rank of Captain before leaving the Marines to begin his law enforcement career with the United States Drug Enforcement Agency. While with the DEA, he served as criminal investigator in Detroit, Michigan, as a Supervisory Special Agent in charge of a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Group, and finally as the Assistant Agent in Charge of the DEA Office of Training in Quantico. After retiring from the DEA in 2014, Blackwood
worked as a government contractor, travelling extensively throughout the Middle East and Central Asia training law enforcement personnel in drug enforcement procedures. Agnew told Legion Post members that the county has been incredibly fortunate to have had Blackwood join his office’s ranks. “His leadership skills, his mentorship of younger deputies, his dogged determination to seek the truth, and his calm, professional demeanor have benefited all of us,” Agnew said. “I can think of no one who better embodies the ideals of the American Legion and is more deserving of this honor.”

Car dealer pitches in for 4-H shooting club On Saturday, May 18, the Goochland 4-H Shooting Education Club held a Ford Drive for Your Community event at Parrish Ford, during which 66 members of the community test drove new Ford vehicles to help support the club. Ford Motor Company provided a donation to the club for each test drive taken by eligible drivers. The club also had a bake sale at Parrish Ford on Saturday to raise additional funds. The funds raised will be used to support the club, as well as allow the BB team to attend the Daisy National Competition from July 3-6 in Rogers, Arkansas. The Goochland 4-H Shooting Education Club’s mission is to educate youth between the ages of 9 and 19 on the proper way to handle guns and shoot safely with the emphasis on safety. There are 25 members from Goochland and surrounding counties in the club, and 20 youth participated in the Ford Drive for Your Community Event. Guards’ devotion offers lesson in patriotism By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Ask any 10 U.S. citizens when they feel the most pride in being an American, and there is little doubt you will get 10 different answers. For some, it may be when they hear The Star Spangled Banner played, or perhaps when they
reflect on the sacrifices made by the millions of men and women who have worn our country’s uniform. Maybe it’s a passage in a book, a scene in a film, or a story of heroism passed down from a family member who served. Having been privileged to attend the annual Memorial Day ceremony at Goochland High School earlier

this week — during which 92-yearold WWII veteran Floyd Callihan delivered his stirring remarks to a crowd that included veterans from every branch of the military — I was able to see patriotism on full display. But while my own pride in being an American has certainly been with me for as long as I can
remember, I must admit that I only recently learned of something that made me feel perhaps as honored as I ever have to call this land my home. For many of us, Arlington National Cemetery is certainly a familiar image, as is the hallowed see Tomb > 11

Four brave chaplains’ story still resonates By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
As a child, I used to enjoy going to Washington, D.C., and taking in the many sights and attractions. One of my favorite places was the old Wax Museum near the Armory. It’s long gone now, and the historical displays are probably serving a second life as candles in some unknowing soul’s parlor. The museum featured the regular wax fare of figures, including Jack the Ripper, President Roosevelt, Queen Elizabeth and Marilyn Monroe. But it was the final stop on the tour that intrigued me the most. You could hear it before it actually appeared, as a portion of a ship tossed in artificially rough waters, obviously on its last leg before a trip to Davy Jones’ locker. Four men remain on deck, one of them praying while the other holds a Rosary. Another one leans over the rail to give his life preserver to a sailor in the water. It was quite a dramatic scene and made a lasting impression on me. When I grew older, I only remembered portions of the brief story that accompanied the scene at the museum, but I never forgot the image of those men calmly offering their life vests to save the lives of others. I have since learned the entirety of their saga, and the enormity of their sacrifice. The four chaplains served together with 900 other men on the Dorchester on an undisclosed mission in the North Atlantic in the winter of 1943. More than a week had passed when a German submarine near Newfoundland torpedoed the ship. The blast knocked out the see Memorial Day > page 11

Goochland girls soccer shuts-out Nandua By Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor
GOOCHLAND -- The young and talented Bulldogs flexed their depth and speed in Thursday’s 7-0 trouncing of Nandua in the Region 2A Girls soccer quarterfinals. “It’s been a long, growing season of individuals and team with a lot of young girls trying to figure out their role, a lot of the upperclassmen trying to figure out their role, meshing with the younger girls and I think it’s taken the bulk of the year to get there,” Goochland head coach Paul Manno said. “But it seems to be coming together right now at the right time.” The Bulldogs have shown throughout the season that they have a number of players who can score any given night, and they showed that again on May 23 with five different players finding the net. Manno complimented his team’s unselfish play, as well as how they were feeding the ball to the right players. After the Bulldogs piled the pressure on Nandua’s defense throughout the opening minutes, they broke through near the 19-minute mark as Julissa Gallegos footed the ball through the corner on a fast break. Less than four minutes later, Tyler Paulin hammered Ella Kamencik’s
corner kick into the upstairs netting for the Bulldogs’ first corner kick goal of the year. “Tyler couldn’t have placed it any better,” Manno said. Gallegos later in the first half scooted a grounder past the goalie on another swift drive to reach her two goals scored on the evening. “All year we really have been working with all the girls, but particularly Julissa -- she has such power and pace to her game, and when she breaks away, sometimes she has a hard time slowing down...and she’s worked ... really hard for the last 3 weeks [at] finding that lower gear once she breaks away to make an easy pass into the goal,” Manno said, “and I couldn’t be more proud of her; she was 2-outof-2 today, and that’s exactly what you want to see.” Allie Joyner chased the ball into the corner of the net to give Goochland a 4-0 halftime lead, Erla Thorkelsdottir in the second half added a well-placed kick, Joyner followed another ball all the way to the net and Cate Hinckley, after a couple of close calls in the game, finally sent one through in a 1-on-1 matchup with the goalie. In addition to Kamencik, Joyner, Bridget Dinora, Aubrie Hixon and Brooke Hix added one assist apiece. The Bulldogs traveled on Tuesday, May 28 to play top-seeded Poquoson in the Region 2A semifinals.

Goochland boys soccer routs Bluestone 6-2 By Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor
GOOCHLAND -- Sophomore Charlie Flammia twice grabbed his Bulldogs the lead in the first half, and he and his teammates helped Goochland Boys Soccer pull away from Bluestone, win 6-2 and remain unbeaten (17-0) going into the regional semifinals. Flammia led the way with 3 goals and Matthew Lewis, Hunter Willms and Kyle Vincent each scored one. Bluestone tied up the game in the first half after Nick Vandeloecht/Goochland Gazette Charlie Flammia’s early goal on a penalty kick, Charlie Flammia (21) frees the ball on the but Flammia, after maneuvering the ball on past way to scoring a goal in the quarterfinals. Bluestone’s stonewalling defender Dale Sturdifen
Jr., kicked it to the right of the keeper and into the net to lift his Bulldogs into the lead once again. Goochland went into the half leading 2-1. In matching up against Sturdifen, whom Flammia described as being bigger than him, Flammia said: “If I went up to him for a 50/50 ball, he would just body me, I would just go to the ground, so... I tried to bait him into stepping for the ball, then after I baited him, he made his move, I just took it around him, shot it.” Inside the first 8 minutes of the second half, Lewis threaded the needle through Bluestone’s defense and finished off his blistering charge on a groundball kick for the insurance goal, and Willms landed a shot to make it 4-1. Vincent, on a standout shot near the final
20 minutes of regulation, followed the keeper’s block off his initial kick to foot the ball into the upstairs netting for the Bulldogs’ 5th goal of the match. The visitors added their second goal inside the final 7 minutes of game time before Flammia secured the hat trick in the closing moments. The Indians, seeded no. 2 in Region 2A, hosted no. 3 Poquoson in the semifinals on Tuesday, May 28 for the right to play in the state tournament and region final. Also in Goochland, the Bulldogs’ varsity baseball team hosted Poquoson in the Region 2A quarterfinals, with Poquoson winning 24-1. Goochland Softball routed Greensville 15-4 in the first round of the Region 2A tournament before taking a 10-1 defeat to Amelia in the quarterfinals.
