A grand
FINALE
As proud families looked on, Goochland’s Class of 2019 celebrated the final day of their high school careers. This week, a few of those grads share the photos that mean the most to them from that day. See page 5.

Above: McKenzie Lyda, left, celebrates with her sister Chloe. “This photo is very special to me because I felt immense joy and pride for my sister before, during, and after the ceremony,” said Chloe. County confirms work on much-anticipated project is around six months behind By Roslyn Ryan Editor
When construction first began on the county’s new state-of-the-art animal shelter and pet adoption center on Hidden Rock Lane, many local animal lovers began counting down to the day when the county would officially cut the ribbon on the 14,000 square foot facility. Now, however, it seems they will be waiting much longer than originally planned. According to Goochland County Administrator John Budesky, the county has terminated its relationship with BFE Construction, the general contractor on the project, and begun working with the company that issued a performance bond for the work in order to get back on track. Budesky said the move came after it was determined that the contractor was not meeting the terms agreed upon with the county. see Animal shelter > 2

welcomes Dr. Michael Marotta to its Goochland office. Dr. Marotta brings a wealth of experience after completing a two-year residency at the University of Virginia Hospital.
The Goochland County Animal Shelter has temporarily relocated to the County’s Central High School Cultural and Educational Complex located at 2748 Dogtown Road, in Goochland. The temporary Animal Shelter will operate at the rear of the Central High School Complex until the new shelter is completed. Citizens can continue to contact the Animal Shelter by calling (804) 556-5302. The shelter currently has the following pets available to a good home: A female Pit bull, about 4 to 6 years old; a handsome, neutered male hound, about 3 to 5 years old; and a super lovable male Pit mix, about 2 to 4 years old. The Goochland Animal Shelter is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The facility has many lost dog and cat fliers posted. For more information on these pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Goochland Animal Shelter, call (804) 556-5302. You also can visit the shelter on Facebook at “Goochland County Animal Control.”

The construction site is currently sealed off to the public, and Budesky confirmed last Friday that work is at least six months behind schedule. Budesky said the delays are not expected to impact the cost of the shelter, and insisted that there is no evidence that any funding has been mismanaged. Despite this, news of the contract termination casts a cloud over a project that was hailed from its first days as an innovative model for cooperation between the local government and the community. First conceived and shepherded through its initial phases by former Goochland
County Administrator Rebecca Dickson, the new building will eventually take the place of the cramped facility that previously served as the county animal shelter before being demolished last year. Once completed, the new shelter will include a shelter, adoption area and an education center. Funding for the project came in part from the county and in part from the nonprofit Goochland Pet Lovers organization. To Goochand residents Richard and Kathy Verlander, who have been champions of the new shelter from the beginning and spent countless hours volunteering with Goochland Pet Lovers, the
recent snag has done little to dampen enthusiasm for the organization’s mission. “The county has done such a good job of keeping leadership at GPL informed and has been very proactive in making sure the project continues to move forward in a timely fashion in spite of some unforeseen delays,” the couple shared in an e-mail this week. “Also the county professionals working with the animals at the temporary shelter continue to do amazing work under circumstances that aren’t ideal. Both personally and as members of Goochland Pet Lovers, we are so excited about the future and our shared commitment working with the county to make our new shelter among the best in the country.”

Goochland resident Kim Jennings, here with her husband Arthur, said she is proud to be serving as this year’s honorary Relay for Life chair. The annual event will be held on June 15.
For local cancer survivor, Relay mission hits home kind of physical and emotional battle she was facing. Her husband Arthur had fought and won his own battle with cancer 10 years before Jennings was diagnosed. “He was my rock — I just don’t even have the words to describe the support he provided, and the way he took care of me,” said Jennings, adding that her husband of nearly three decades never missed a single appointment while she was receiving treatment. “He absolutely took his wedding vows to heart.” Jennings said she is honored to be able to share her story with those attending this year’s Goochland Relay for Life, part of the ACS’s largest annual fundraising effort. Ask this year’s honorary Goochland Relay for Life chair Kim Jennings if the American Cancer Society makes a difference in the lives of those facing cancer and she will say without hesitation that it does. After all, she is living proof. Just 49 when she was diagnosed with Stage 2 invasive breast cancer, Jennings would endure a grueling 22 months of treatment—including several rounds each of chemotherapy and surgery—before finally hearing what she describes as her magic words: “no evidence of disease.” Jennings says that several services and programs offered by the American Cancer Society (ACS) were critical to her physical and emotional wellbeing during that time,
including the organization’s website, which offered a trusted place to turn for information about her diagnosis. Among the other ACS offerings that served as lifelines to Jennings were a mentoring program that connected her with another woman who had faced the same battle she was fighting, and a class called “Look Good, Feel Good” that offered makeup and styling tips specifically geared toward those dealing with the side effects of cancer treatment. Though the primary focus was on aesthetics, “It was so much more than a makeup class,” says Jennings. “It was really a great support opportunity.” In Jennings’ case, she had one additional member of her support team who knew better than most people what

Common sense, caution needed on pot issue By Roslyn Ryan Editor
I am not a betting woman by nature, but I like to think I know a safe one when I see it. And in that “safe bet” category, I would respectfully place the following wager: At some point in the near future — maybe not today, maybe
not tomorrow, but eventually — Virginia will follow the lead of at least 10 other states and decriminalize the use of marijuana for recreational use. Over the past year or so, as the issue has made headlines again and again, plenty of articles and editorials have taken various stances on legalization, from champion-

The state senate, as you may recall, last year unanimously approved a bill allowing physicians to prescribe the use of oil-derived from marijuana, a substance that had previously been allowed only
for the treatment of epilepsy. But even as people across the political spectrum (from Willie Nelson to Glenn Beck) celebrate the move toward legalization, it certainly doesn’t hurt to approach the issue with caution. Let’s be clear here: drug use see Legalization > 7

No life should or can be judged by one episode or a single mistake. Not a single one of us would welcome an examination of our weakest moment, or the moment we made what seemed like a life changing blunder. Truth is, life is full of moments and episodes, some good and some bad, but all part of a journey of enlightenment. Hopefully, those unfortunate moments prepare us for bigger challenges that wait down the road of life. Last week, the sports world mourned the loss of one of its greatest baseball players, Bill Buckner. While many will remember the first baseman for his thousands of base hits or numerous batting titles, others will recall a man whose life was changed by one mistake. Fans are often unforgiving and often display a lack of compassion that only seems acceptable while sitting in bleachers. For some, it’s a license to judge, intimidate and insult participants, all of whom possess far more athletic ability than the trolls yelling from the stands. In Boston, fans are notorious for their short attention spans and their eagerness to destroy their heroes. And Red Sox fans who had been denied a pennant for decades are second to no one when it comes to hurling insults or reminding their favorite player of his last strikeout. It all seemed different in 1986 as the curse seemed destined to end in a World Series that features the hometown favorites against the New York Mets. With the Red Sox up three games to two, the team needed one out to secure the title — so when see Letters > page 7

Street sign replacement begins in Goochland Contributed report
Goochland County is beginning an effort to replace all of the county’s private street signs starting in June 2019. The county’s General Services Department has spent the better part of six months working to identify and create the new signs. The private street signs will be a change from the standardized green sign/white lettering combination that many residents are used to seeing on county roads, keeping the white lettering but switching to a brown background. The Federal Highway Administration allows for street signs to be green, brown, blue, or white (with black
Buckner continued from >6 a lazy ground ball dribbled toward Buckner at first, the victory seemed secure. And why not? Buckner was one of the most dependable fielding first basemen in the league and, surely, the last out would be recorded by this hometown hero. In one of those cases of what could go wrong did, the ball slipped under Buckner’s glove and the Mets won game six of the series and claimed the title the following game.

In all, 789 signs will need to be replaced, a process that may take up to 18 to 24 months to complete. Signs will be replaced in quadrants, beginning in the western end of Goochland and moving eastward until all 789 signs are completed. The effort to identify and ultimately to replace the private street signs is being conducted in part to aid Goochland’s public safety officials as they maneuver the County’s roads in response to situations requiring their
attention. Many citizens have their mailing addresses associated with private roads. Marking private roads with new signs can help narrow down addresses and reduce responses times during an emergency. In addition, mailboxes are not always directly in front of the home. Goochland’s public safety officials would like to remind everyone to please post their address clearly and prominently at the end of their driveway and on their home. Despite more than three decades in baseball, numerous titles and records, the media and Red Sox fans didn’t forget the error, and the play began to define a man’s life. Buckner was finally traded by the Red Sox and enjoyed a few more seasons playing with a number of teams and finally hanging up his cleats. He returned to Boston for his final season in 1990 for his final season, still haunted by the indiscriminate heckling from some Sox fans. Somewhere along the line, Buckner’s plight became the
subject of documentaries alongside other famous scapegoats. After retirement, Buckner enjoyed a successful business career and even took a turn at managing but his biggest post playing event occurred in 2008 when he returned to Boston to throw out the first pitch to former teammate Dwight Evans. When Buckner reached the mound, he was greeted by a two-minute standing ovation from a standing room only crowd at Fenway Park. He finally achieved what one mistake has taken from him,
the respect and love of fans who once blamed him for the team’s biggest blunders. Thankfully, Buckner and those closest to him, took the error in stride, but the label of scapegoat was not the one that he wished to be remembered. Going by the numbers, it’s certainly not a title he deserves and major league all star seems a more appropriate title. In more than 2,500 games, Buckner recorded more than a thousand hits, including 174 homeruns and almost 500 doubles. Boston finally won a title
No, marijuana doesn’t have a documented history of causing the kind of devastation that “harder” drugs do. But it is a drug. And decriminalizing without effective regulations— which take time and care to develop and implement — could prove disastrous. As some of my dearest friends will attest, I have long been waging a semi-public campaign to be named the
world’s most boring woman: I don’t smoke, drink, watch superhero movies, eat spicy food or dance. And while I wouldn’t say I’m anti-fun, per se, I am pretty firmly antidrug. Yet there are plenty of those nearest and dearest to me who will celebrate the move to decriminalize marijuana as a landmark victory for all Virginians.
As usual, it would seem the best path forward is somewhere in the middle. As Virginia continues to soften its stance, the hope is that leaders will be taking careful notice of what has — and hasn’t — worked in other states that have relaxed the rules. In this case especially, there are benefits to be had from not being first.
in 2007 and ended the curse and claiming the title of world champs, but some still remember that rolling grounder that eluded Buckner’s glove. Buckner’s passing reminds all of us that we are better than our worst deed, or more talented than one error would
indicate. And, maybe, that’s the most important lesson learned from a man who endured and survived, and, by all accounts, was hesitant to judge his fellow man. Hopefully, history will allow him the same dignity.

CNU’s Joe Cutchins named All-American By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
GOOCHLAND — Early in the season, the original plan was for Christopher Newport Baseball player Joe Cutchins to come in as a late-inning defensive replacement in right field. He started off the year doing that – he did his job and did what his coaches asked him to do – but the coaches were also always telling Cutchins and his teammates: If you hit, we’re going to find a place for you to play. While he and his CNU Captains were taking on Oglethorpe in a tournament in Georgia on Feb. 15, Cutchins set the tone for the kind of year he’d go on to assemble ... by clobbering a grand slam in the ninth inning of CNU’s 19-3 victory. On March 26, Cutchins delivered another slam against Frostburg State. He not only became a fixture in the Captains’ starting lineup, but he also delivered one of the most consistent offensive seasons in CNU history ... on the way to being named a D3baseball.com Third Team All-American. The senior second baseman also contributed to a record-breaking achievement, becoming one of nine CNU Baseball players this year to earn D3baseball.com All-Region honors – the most from a single school in the region in the history of the award. “It means a lot – I’ve worked so hard – and just to see it come together…and be able to look back at the season and see what I’ve done and see what the team has done,” Cutchins said. “We had an incredible team … great season overall, one that I’ll never forget personally and one that I hope our team will never forget.” Cutchins, who is from Goochland County, had been playing baseball for as long as he can remember. “All the different things that baseball can bring just really captured my attention,” he said. “I just really love playing the game.” Cutchins came up through the Goochland Youth Athletic Association and also played a little bit of travel ball, with the Richmond Rally being his first travel team. At the high school level with Goochland, he and his teammates enjoyed seasons that saw them win championships in the conference and district. Going into college, Cutchins was a little smaller – he was “not really a big power guy,” he described – but he always took pride in not striking out, putting the ball in play and making the pitchers and fielders work a little bit. He was mainly a singles guy, and he took the small-ball

approach: work the counts, find any way on and steal a couple of bases. In transitioning to the collegiate level, he observed that the pitching was definitely a lot better than what he was used to, and the game was a little faster. “But I felt like I was ready to adjust to it.” Prior to his senior season, Cutchins had his best showing as a sophomore when he batted .242 with 23 hits, 13 RBIs and a couple of doubles. But the improvement he made for his final year was tremendous. As a senior, he out-hit his previous 3 seasons combined 54-33, clocked 13 doubles compared to his prior career total of 4 and skyrocketed his final home run count from 1 in his junior year to 10. In 2019 he tallied up 50 RBIs, had a .707 slugging percentage, added season-highs of walks (12) and hits-by-pitch (6) and stole a season-high 10 bases. His .406 batting average ranks among the top 10 best averages in CNU Baseball’s history. He also tied for second most RBIs in a single game by a CNU Baseball
player when he batted 3-for-4 with 9 RBIs, a pair of home runs, a double and 3 runs scored against Penn State Harrisburg. For this year, he said his mindset was better. “My big thing was just trying not to put so much pressure on myself this year,” he CUTCHINS added, “and not try to do too much and just do my job.” And it helps to get off to a hot start like he did early in the year, he noted. He also took on more of a power approach at the plate. “I really looked to drive the ball more early in the count and looked for pitches on the inner half of the plate,” he noted, “rather than looking for the ball on the outer part and trying to hit
singles to the opposite field.” Another key change he made at the plate was incorporating the leg kick into his approach. His dad, Cutchins said, has always been a big leg kick guy, and was always trying to get Cutchins to do a leg kick while hitting. Initially, that wasn’t Cutchins’ approach – his approach was always: foot down early, put the ball into play, go for singles. But this past summer, Cutchins played with CNU teammate and fellow senior and allregion player Ryan Grubbs, who also had a leg kick to his game at the plate. Between Grubbs and Cutchins’ dad, Cutchins was finally convinced to give it a try in the summer. He heard from others that the leg kick helps you generate more power, but for Cutchins, it helped him with his timing at the plate. It took a little while for him to get adjusted to it, but he got comfortable, started moving the hands a little bit more and started to see the ball better. His coaches at CNU – Cutchins said – never gave up on him throughout his college career. see Cutchins > page 8

Goochland boys tennis’ team season ends Staff Report
BAILEY’S CROSSROADS -- Goochland Boys Tennis delivered a stellar season in 2019, assembling a final record of 13-6 and reaching the Class 2 team state tournament on a 5-1 regional semifinal victory over Bruton. The Bulldogs this past Thursday traveled up to Fairfax County to face George Mason in the state quarterfinals. The singles players played in the following order: no 6 Reid Dameron, no. 5 Jacob Taylor, no. 4 Jon Daly, no. 3 Bronte Sundstrom, no. 2 Adam Webb and no. 1 Ryan Berstine. Ultimately, the Bulldogs’ strong team season reached its end in a 5-0 defeat to George Mason. But the year is not over yet for Virginia Tech signee Bernstine; he will play in the semifinals of the boys’ singles state tournament on Thursday, June 6 at 9 a.m. Correction: In last week’s article on the boys’ tennis team, it was incorrecly reported that the Region 2A runner-up doubles team of Bernstine and Webb would play in states. MANAKIN-SABOT - The Deep Run Horse Show, one of the East Coast’s oldest shows, will be held June 19-23 at the Deep Run Hunt Club Show Grounds off of Manakin Road in Manakin-Sabot. Horses and riders will be competing in over 200 classes across the five days, vying for championship awards and prize money and hoping to gain points towards year-end awards and/or qualifying shows for national competitions. Many of the riders are from Virginia and local to the area.
The show will begin at 8 a.m. each day. There is no admission charge, and refreshments will be available. Spectators will be able to watch the show from the covered grandstand, spectator tents and bleachers. There will also be a variety of arts and crafts shops at the show grounds, including jewelry, art and clothing. The phone number for information before and during the show is 804-5179809. Additional information, along with a complete schedule and description of all the classes, is available at www. deeprunhorseshow.com.
Cutchins continued from >7 “My coaches gave me so many opportunities,” he said. “They always knew I could do it, and thankfully I was able to. It helped the team out this year.” The senior-led Captains rolled out a final record of 35-10, made their 10th overall NCAA

GOOCHLAND - Goochland Boys Soccer reached the Region 2A semifinals match, held Tuesday, May 28, as the second seed, and hosted third-seeded Poquoson for the right to advance to both the region final and the Class 2 state tournament. Ultimately, Poquoson prevailed 1-0, and the Bulldogs’ tremendous 2019 season came to an end on a final record of 17-1. At Poquoson High School, Goochland Girls Soccer fell to top-seeded Poquoson 8-1, ending the young Bulldogs’ strong season on a final record of 12-6. Goochland’s Kyle Vincent battles for the ball in the Region 2A semifinals home game versus Poquoson.
Tournament appearance and won the first Capital Athletic Conference Championship in program history. More records fell and more milestones were reached, as CNU scored over 500 runs for the first time, averaged the sixth most runs per game in Division III baseball history, reached 35 wins for the fifth time overall, earned its 800th win as a program and saw head coach John Harvell

win his 500th. “Coming in as a freshman…we had a starting shortstop as a freshman and starting center fielder as a freshman,” Cutchins said. “The guys stuck to it and didn’t give up…we’ve been playing in this program for all four years together and it really kind of culminated together…helps the team just relax a little bit more when you’ve been playing with these guys for so long.”
Now a graduate of CNU as an Economics major, Cutchins would love to get into coaching; he’s looking to stay at CNU, help out the coaching staff and see where things go from there. He credits his coaches – from college to high school – for making him into the player he is today. “I definitely wouldn’t be in this position without them.”

“Graduation to me was such a mixture of excitement, anxiety, and happiness and I am grateful for every second of it,” said 2019 graduate Abbigail Layne. “But I couldn’t have made it without some of the people in these photos.” Clockwise, from the top left: Justin Hawk and Layne; one of Layne’s favorite teachers, Mr. Ryan Maloney Layne’s family, including mother Suzanne Layne, Ryan Kroft, and her dad, Tony Layne; and Layne with her “soul sister and best friend” Jordyn Livingston.

Productive ways to spend the summer after graduation
G
raduation is a momentous day in the lives of college students. After years of schooling that dates all the way back to preschool or kindergarten, newly minted college graduates are finally ready to begin their professional lives. That can be a scary prospect for some students, especially those who graduate without jobs lined up. The summer after graduating from college can be a time like no other in the lives of new graduates. It can be easy to
grow dejected as weeks or months go by without receiving a job offer. But spending the summer after graduation as productively as possible can help graduates overcome any dejection they might feel and increase their chances of landing a job. Contact career services offices at your alma mater. Career services offices can help recent graduates as they look for their first jobs out of college. Such offices may have access to job and internship opportunities
that grads do not. In addition, they may coach grads on interviewing techniques and on ways to stand out in crowded job markets. Seek internships. If part- or fulltime employment is proving elusive, don’t be afraid to seek and ultimately accept internships, which can provide a way for grads to get their foot in the doors in certain industries. When job hunting, don’t get pigeon-holed by your major. Just because a student graduates with a
particular degree does not mean he or she needs to look for work in that field. In fact, many companies may prefer entry-level applicants with degrees that are not specific to their industries so their new hires are blank slates who can be easily trained. Attend job fairs. While other graduates may be taking the summer off, enterprising grads looking for work should attend as many job fairs as possible. Customize a resume for every
job. Be sure the curriculum vitae is not static. Write and refine resumes for each job you apply for, mildly tweaking the wording or accomplishments to address the key phrases used in the job listing. It can be tempting for recent college grads to spend the summers after graduation relaxing, but those who spend that time productively may lands jobs more quickly than those who do not. —MetroCreative
