Drivers who ignore the flashing lights of a stopped school bus could soon be facing a hefty fine, thanks to an ordinance change passed unanimously by the Goochland County board of supervisors on June 4. The ruling will allow the school division to place cameras on the stop arm — the bar that extends out from a school bus when it is letting riders on and off — in order to capture images of drivers who do not stop. If caught on camera, drivers face a civil penalty of $250. Goochland County Schools assistant superintendent Andy Armstrong explained to board members that the move is not intended as a revenue generator for the school division, but rather as a way to keep students safe. According to Armstrong, a bus driver seeing a car pass the bus when its stop arm is extended would mark the time the violation occurred and contact the transportation staff, who would access the video once the bus driver returned to the bus garage. The transportation director would then draft a letter to the vehicle owner with a photo see Bus cameras > 5
