to local students in need during the summer months, she knew her first step would be to get all of the other people who would need to be involved in the project on board. And, in this case, that meant literally.
Becoming the valedictorian of one’s class may not be hereditary, but for Goochland High School’s top student of 2019, one very special family connection certainly played a role. Nick Jean, who credits staying on top of his work with helping him attain his 4.8 GPA, says he also took inspiration from his father’s high school accomplishments. According to his son, JEAN Donald Jean survived a challenging early start as a child growing up in Detroit, Michigan, and managed to become valedictorian of his own senior class, earning a full ride to the University of Michigan.

The Goochland County Animal Shelter has temporarily relocated to the County’s Central High School Cultural and Educational Complex located at 2748 Dogtown Road, in Goochland. The temporary Animal Shelter will operate at the rear of the Central High School Complex until the new shelter is completed. Citizens can continue to contact the Animal Shelter by calling (804) 556-5302. The shelter currently has the following pets available to a good home: A loving male mixed breed, about 4-6 years old; a sweet male Beagle mix, about 1-3 years old; and an adorable neutered male cat, about a year old. The Goochland Animal Shelter is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The facility has many lost dog and cat fliers posted. For more information on these pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Goochland Animal Shelter, call (804) 556-5302. You also can visit the shelter on Facebook at “Goochland County Animal Control.”
Students continued from >1 “Looking at all of the challenges he faced, and what he was able to accomplish, I saw no reason why I shouldn’t have been capable of succeeding in high school,” said Nick, who in addition to maintaining top grades was also a champion swimmer during his time at GHS. “I knew that if I just put in the work, and was kind to my teachers and kind to my peers, it would work out for the best.” Jean credits growing up in a multicultural household—his mother, Murside, was born in Turkey — with instilling in him an appreciation for diversity and the ability to celebrate different point of view, both character traits he’ll likely lean on as an incoming freshman at University of California at Berkeley. While he isn’t sure exactly what he will major in, he developed a strong interest in economics during high school
and may pursue that. He’s also interested in the university’s undergraduate business school. He’s looking forward to seeing what life is like on the West Coast, he said, and immersing himself in new experiences. “It will be a great experience to see something different,” said Jean. “I’m really stoked about that.” *** Like Nick Jean, Goochland High School salutatorian Berkeley Winston says her parents played a critical role in helping her become a stellar student. In her case, she says, it was lessons offered early on that made the biggest difference. Winston said her parents, instilled good habits and a strong work ethic early on, and then let her take the reins. When she did, it quickly became apparent that Winston had what it took to be successful. In addition to staying on
top of her studies, the selfdescribed “science and math person” also starred on the Bulldogs’ tennis team and was active in the school’s National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Journalism Club. This fall she will attend the University of Virginia, where she plans to explore a possible WINSTON major in either business or the health field. As for her advice to incoming freshmen who want to be standing among the top students in their own classes someday, Winston said the key is stay on top of class work — and to relax. “Don’t put too much pressure on yourself,” Winston insisted. “Do what you are capable of, and do your best at it.”

Sunshine Bus continued from >1 Landrum’s plan, to turn a decommissioned GCPS bus into a kitchen on wheels, meant that she and her staff would be able to visit local neighborhoods and ensure that those who might otherwise struggle with hunger could have access to warm and healthy meals. And while Landrum faced a number of hurdles in her quest to get the project up and running, it is now proving an invaluable community resource. Even before Landrum and county school board members happily cut the ribbon on the county’s new Sunshine Food Bus on June 11, just before the monthly school board meeting, it had already served over 130 meals.
“It was tough, but it was worth it,” said Landrum of the various challenges involved in getting the bus outfitted with the electricity, water and food service equipment that would be needed to safely serve hundreds of meals throughout the summer (see schedule below). Fortunately, the school administration, including GCPS Superintendent Jeremy Raley, and the local school board were enthusiastic supporters of the plan from day one, and also pitching in to help were numerous local partners including the Goochland Education Foundation, the Goochland Rotary Club, Piedmont Smokehouse, Old Dominion Metal Products, Inc., and the Goochland Community Action Program. Goochland Career Technical Education students
also played a major role in getting the bus ready for service. “It’s one of the coolest things I’ve seen in my time here,” said assistant superintendent Steve Geyer, who attended the dedication ceremony held in front of the county administration building. “It’s a great example of the kind of cooperation that can happen when people come together on behalf of our students. “It’s really about community, and when you see multiple generations sharing a meal together — I think that is my favorite part of it,” said school board member Karen Horn. “It’s truly bringing people together.” Featuring full-size warming ovens, refrigerators and a walk-up window, the bus is perfect for delivering and serving food prepared in the school cafeteria. And, when it comes to spreading happiness, the bus seems built for that as well. “I am just so excited,” said
school board chairman John Wright, happily tucking into a piping hot barbecue sandwich just after the ribbon cutting. “This is already my favorite school board meeting ever.” *** The Sunshine Food Bus schedule is as follows: Perkins Baptist Church - 3146 Hadensville-Fife Rd, Goochland, 10:45 to 11 a.m. County Line Baptist Church - 4070 County Line Rd, Kents Store, 11:15 to 11:30 a.m. Newline Baptist Church - 4876 Newline Road, Gum Spring, 11:45 a.m. to noon Shady Grove Baptist Church - 3384 Oakland Church Rd, Gum Spring, 12:15 to 12:30 p.m. St. Mark Baptist Church 4596 Factory Mill Rd, Maidens, 12:40 to12:55 p.m. Hebron Presbyterian Church - 1040 Shallow Well Rd, Manakin-Sabot, 1:15 to 1:30 p.m.

Acting up: New venture is a win for residents By Roslyn Ryan Editor
As the child of two athletic parents who both went on to become coaches after their high school heroics were behind them, one might suppose that I was destined to have at least a moderate head start on my own path to sports stardom. Dear reader, rest assured you can take this one to the bank: that did not happen. No, rather than being gifted with even a soupcon of athletic ability, I was blessed with almost zero coordination and the speed of whatever member of the animal kingdom is slower than a sloth but faster than a potted plant. In short, sports were just not
my thing. Please don’t think my parents didn’t do everything they could think of to help. There was plenty of encouragement and tons of support — and even lessons in tennis and field hockey — but all to no avail: unless they started handing out trophies for the cleanest uniform, there was never much chance that the spotlight was going to find me on an athletic field. This would be a really fantastic story if I woke up one day in the middle of my high school career and was suddenly, as if by magic, the kind of gifted young athlete I always daydreamed about being. Of course that didn’t happen, but something wonderful actually did. One spring day, after tagging
along with a friend who was auditioning for one of our school’s theater productions, I decided on a whim to audition too. I ended up getting a part, but, more than that, I ended up finding my place. For the next three years I appeared in every show the school put on, working my way from bit parts to leading roles. No, I wasn’t playing a sport, but I was learning the value of teamwork, practice and preparation, and how to overcome fear and doubt. For the first time, even without scoring a goal or sinking a shot, I began to understand what winning felt like. I was reminded of this the other day when I was contacted about Goochland’s brand new community theater group, a venture that promises to offer a fantastic new
creative outlet for residents of all ages. The Goochland Community Theatre, spearheaded by Jennifer Layton, will hold auditions for its very first production, Too Much Sun by Nicky Silver, on July 6. “A theatre is the most important sort of house in the world,” said the novelist Tove Jansson, “because that’s where people are shown what they could be if they wanted and what they’d like to be if they dared to and what they really are.” The fact that Goochland will now have this new venture is just one more feather in the county’s cap. As many others surely are, I’m already looking forward to opening night.
For this dad, hope serves as beacon during tough times By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
I got a can opener for Father’s Day. Don’t laugh. It’s exactly what I wanted. Like various other objects in life, can openers are often the least replaced appliance in the kitchen, and only toasters have more seniority in the arena of outdated conveniences. The old opener was a gift when
I first moved out on my own many decades ago, and, quite honestly, had seen better years. For the past several years, it was transitioning from an automatic can opener to one that required an ample dose of manual manipulation. But, we all know it’s the thought that counts and my kids hit the jackpot choosing just the right present at the right time. As I was enjoying the virtues of a new can opener complete with

knife sharpener, I received another gift that hit much closer to my heart. My son Jack handed me his report card from his first completed year at Freeman High School. The straight A’s for the year were impressive, but, knowing the real story behind the final grades, I couldn’t help but ponder the amount of work and effort it required for Jack to achieve these results. It also supplied me with an overwhelming sense of pride as I noted
the look of accomplishment on his face as he presented the grades. Hours later as I noticed the report card laying on the table, I reflected on a year that had its share of victories accompanied by a unique set of challenges, and how Jack had continued to fight what some would call insurmountable odds to achieve perfection. Father’s Day also was special because it was Jack’s first day back see The best gift > 7

Letters to the Editor Elected leaders should not ever display bias Dear Editor, I have been monitoring the campaigns for the upcoming Goochland Sheriff’s election and I must say that I find the allegations and response by people appalling. I read two letters to the editor in last week’s Gazette calling for “evidence” of corruption and a reference to a candidate being “laughable to claim not to be a politician.” One letter is signed by an elected County official. The last time I checked, elected officials are supposed to represent all citizens and not show bias against any citizen. This letter showed bias against one of the candidates. Again, county officials are required and should remain neutral while interacting and communicating with the residents. The candidates for Sheriff Levin White, Emiel Fisher and Steve Creasey all have information on their websites and social media platforms, where residents can view their skillsets; not to mention 100’s of signs by one candidate that make our county look like a sideshow. The candidates have totally different resumes. Emiel Fisher is a former private investigator with no certifiable police experience. Steve Creasey is a deputy that was never considered to be an executive level leader by the current Sheriff, evidenced by the fact that he is a Sargent. Why is the Sheriff supporting someone that he never felt was good enough to promote to lieutenant, captain, major or even chief deputy? It’s clearly because of politics. Our county deserves a leader with an extensive skillset and knowledge of Public Safety. Look at Levin White for example. He is a retired homicide and organized crime investigator from Richmond PoIice Department. After he retired he was picked up by the Inspector General Unit with the Department of Corrections. During his time there, the Virginia General Assembly established the see Letters > page 12

The best gift continued from >6 from MDA camp in Wakefield, a gathering of kids from across the Commonwealth who suffer from Muscular Dystropphy and other muscular diseases. It’s a special week that allows this group of special kids to enjoy a week without stares or judgmental comments, or the cruelties that life presents to them daily. It evokes mixed emotions for parents and families who trust the well-being of children
who require constant care to a dedicated group of volunteers and specialists that operate the camp. For me, it’s a difficult week because being away from Jack for any amount of time makes me sad. But, it was this particular year that made me more aware of the magnitude of Jack’s importance to his family, and how, even when he’s away, he’s always with us. Sometimes, it’s easy to overlook the influence of a child on our everyday lives, but, in
Jack’s case, the impact is easy to understand. Through his courageous journey to combat a cruel and heartless killer called Duchenne, Jack leads by example and has instilled a sense of tenacity in the people he loves. Even when he’s away, he’s always with us. At times when our best effort is elusive, it’s the thought of Jack and his dedication to doing a job well and completing a task that motivates us to achieve our successes. And on those nights when
the surmounting reality of Jack’s disease and its gloomy prognosis will not allow me to find peace and the only remedy is an uncontrolled cry, he’s there with me forcing me to look forward instead of down. I thought of all of this as Father’s Day 2019 came to a close, as Jack and I talked about his experience at camp. He asked questions about other kids with Duchenne, friends of his who had deteriorated in their abilities since he had last seen them. I was silent as I saw him

In the past, I’ve been what some would consider brutally honest while discussing Jack’s disease and its implications, but it didn’t seem appropriate this time. “They are working all the time to find a cure or treatment,” I told my son. “Sure, they’ll come up with something.” And then we talked about

something that gets a lot of air time around here: Hope. It’s something my family does a lot these days, and it’s a word that offers peace during the most difficult of times. It gives that can opener special meaning, and makes that report card even more significant. It’s something that never leaves our side and is always foremost in our thoughts. Just like Jack. I have four wonderful children, and that’s the best gift any father could expect — a gift that enriches my life daily. So, I can’t help but view this Father’s Day as a celebration of my kids. On this special day, I’m the one giving thanks . . . and hoping.

Reed pilots Dreamland to the Bryan Trophy By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
MANAKIN-SABOT -Addison Reed’s favorite thing is to just be with the horses. “Competing is a plus,” she said. “If I couldn’t compete, I would still ride.” Horse trainer and Addison’s mom Sulu Rose-Reed described how her daughter – who’s been riding since she was about 5 – has always really enjoyed horse showing. “She rides one or two horses pretty much every day of her life,” Sulu said. “Time in the saddle is what it takes…” …especially when it comes to winning the Deep Run Horse Show’s Bryan Trophy. On Saturday, the 14-yearold Addison, who will be a sophomore at Hanover High School this fall, piloted Bridget Phillips’ horse Dreamland to victory in the 58th iteration of the prestigious, three-phase Bryan Trophy Horsemanship Class at the Deep Run Hunt Club. “It’s really cool that I could win that class because I know a lot of the people that are here and I’ve known a lot of them since I was really, really little,” Addison said. She described winning the Bryan Trophy as “a big check mark” for the Reed family. She made tremendous strides from last year when she didn’t make the “test,” the third and final phase of the class with combined aspects of the eventopening jumping phase and the follow-up flat phase. Addison’s victory also succeeded a notable 3rd place finish with Dreamland in Friday evening’s USHJA National Hunter Derby Class, which featured 35 firstround competitors. For Dreamland – whom husband-and-wife trainers Sulu

Mechanicsville’s Addison Reed and Dreamland clear a fence in the jumping phase of the Bryan Trophy Horsemanship Class in the Deep Run Horse Show on Saturday, June 22, 2019.
Rose-Reed and Derek Reed imported from Europe – years of training consistently and staying healthy led to his victory in the elite class. “It’s the hours that you put in every day behind the scenes when people aren’t clapping for you that are what make a horse come up and be able to win a class like this,” Sulu said. “It’s making sure he’s happy and healthy and comfortable at home.” And Addison – Sulu said – gives Dreamland a lot of confidence. “He really believes in her, and she really believes in him,” Sulu said. “They make a great team.”
While Addison said that Dreamland is helping her – “I’m just along for the ride,” she noted – she added that the key thing she does to help him is to take a deep breath, “because that helps him take a breath.” “Maybe I count my rhythm so that he has a rhythm,” she said. “It makes it easier for him to jump because his balance is better.” The Deep Run Horse Show has extra meaning for the Reeds as Sulu not only is from Manakin-Sabot, but also grew up right down the street from the Deep Run Hunt Club. “It’s really fun to have her come back and win here,” Sulu
said of Addison. “It’s a nice trophy and it’s a great horse show and it’s a Heritage Competition, and we know most of the people here because there are a lot of people from the Virginia area. It’s just fun to come and show what she can do here.” Rider and owner Riley Hogan, horse Master of Markets and trainer Sandra Ruiz were the 2019 Bryan Trophy runnersup, while Powhatan’s Elizabeth Carter, a rising senior at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot, finished third with Talinsky, owned by Tess Fortune and trained by Jill Carter. Trainers Sulu Rose-Reed and Derek Reed (1st, $500), Sandra Ruiz (2nd, $300) and
Jill Carter (3rd, $200) were winners of the 2019 $1,000 Markel Award. Reed and Dreamland also won the Deep Run Horse Show’s ASPCA Maclay Horsemanship Class. Rider and owner Sally Ives piloted Sauje, trained by Beverly Burnette, to the runner-up ribbon, while Powhatan rider Hugh Turner and horse Reflective, trained by Fiona Turner and owned by Abby Green, placed third. Reed repeated as the winner of The Faraher Farm Perpetual Trophy and piloted another horse, Commander – owned by Cismont Manor Farm and also trained by Sulu Rose-Reed
and Derek Reed – to victory in the Junior Hunter Classic. Runners-up were horse Candidate, rider and owner Katie Triantos and trainer Pam Baker. Third-place finishers were horse Andiamo, rider Elizabeth Carter, trainer Jill Carter and owner Redfield Farm. The 2019 USHJA National Hunter Derby champions were rider Sarah Tyndall and horse Jack Black, owned by Susanah B. Howland and trained by Pam Baker. Runners-up were horse Kohl, rider and trainer Winn Alden and owner Megan Turner. Third-place finishers were horse Dreamland, rider Addison Reed, trainers Sulu Rose-Reed and Derek Reed and owner Bridget Phillips. Rider, owner and trainer Shannon Kruep piloted her horse Wink to victory in the Deep Run Jr/Am Derby. Runners-up were owner, rider and trainer Whitney Blanchard with Spy Rock, and third-place finishers were rider and owner Caroline Lurie and trainer Katie Cooper with Manhattan. Haley Redifer piloted Suit and Tie, owned by The Barracks and trainer by Claiborne Bishop, to victory in the Adult Amateur Hunter Classic. Rider, owner and trainer Stephanie Guerlain finished runner-up with C’Mon Carmen, and Kate Elliott finished third with Whitny, also owned by The Barracks and trained by Bishop. The Amateur Owner Hunter Classic was won by rider, owner and trainer Jane Gaston and horse Belle. Runners-up were horse Devoted, rider Morgan Bland and owner and trainer Victoria Skelding. Third-place finishers were horse Big City, ManakinSabot rider Annie Wise, owner High Cotton Farm and trainer Janet Simpson.

New season, bright optimism for Goochland By Rob Witham, Special Correspondent
M
ECHANICSVILLE -- Call it opening night jitters. Four-year-old Dylan Delisio excitedly entered the pool for his first 25 freestyle race for Goochland YMCA. But he didn’t quite hear the false start signal, and, determined to do his best, continued to the other side of the pool. Ever the proud parent, his mother Jessica, waiting for him back at the starting line when he returned, looked at him with a huge smile and said, “You did so awesome, you get to do it again!” Delisio’s delight mirrored the optimism of the entire Goochland YMCA team as their 2019 Greater Richmond Aquatic League season got under way at Milestone in Mechanicsville Wednesday night. While the final team totals didn’t fall in their favor – as the Makos won 773-621 – there were plenty of reasons to celebrate. “We haven’t had very many practices, and some of the kids were still in school, so today was my first time to see a lot of them,” noted Goochland head coach Helen Brown. “I have a lot of new swimmers with a lot of questions, and I’m happy to help them through their first meet.” There were returnees as well, led by Lucas Salser, who was Goochland’s quadruple winner, taking victories in the Boys 9-10 100 freestyle (1:14.47), the 50 breaststroke (44.40), 50 freestyle (34.07) and in the 200 Freestyle Relay as the anchor, joining Luca Gardner, Afton Carter and Zachary Cheatham for a win in 2:55.19, easily qualifying for the season-ending GRAL Champs meet next month. Cheatham was a triple winner for the Manta Rays, taking the win in the novice division in the boys’ 9-10 50 freestyle in 43.56, taking nearly three-and-a-half seconds off his personal best time.
Rob Witham/for the Richmond Suburban News
Anna Kate Wirsing swims in the girls’ 15-18 50 backstroke during Goochland YMCA’s first Greater Richmond Aquatic League (GRAL) meet of the season on Wednesday, June 12 at Milestone in Mechanicsville.
Other triple winners were Sasha Babic, Elle Freeman, Joseph Hardman, Cullen Parrish, Eden Rollogas, Ethan Salser and Sophia Summitt. Summitt took the advance division of the girls’ 15-18 100 freestyle in 1:14.72, while Anna Kate Wirsing won the novice division, and the overall event, finishing in 1:12.31. As Brown discussed the team’s performance, a family came up to thank her for the evening. It was their first meet for Goochland after moving from Hanover County, so while the GRAL
experience was familiar, being part of the Manta Rays was not. They were very happy. “I have 38 eight-and-unders on the team. We’re growing, twice as many as last summer,” Brown said. “People are excited about the team, and they’re coming to check it out. It is, for the Manta Rays, their fourth season in GRAL, competing in Division Four. Divisions are based on team size, and Goochland is the largest in its division, just shy of moving up to Division Three. The team’s maiden voyage in 2019 went well, in spite of one obstacle pointed
out with a smile by Brown. “It seems like everyone in Goochland takes vacation the first week that school is out, so we only had about half our team here,” Brown said, noting that, when all together, the Manta Rays total approximately 120 swimmers. The season continues on the road Wednesday with a meet at The Federal Club before Goochland’s home opener on June 26 hosting Mechanicsville at 6 p.m. Goochland will then host the Battlefield Green Ferocious Frogs on Wednesday, July 3 at 6 p.m.
Open mat nights
PRO CORNER

Another strong season in the making for Goochland alum and Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander Staff Report
It’s shaping up to be another big year for Goochland alum and MLB starting pitcher Justin Verlander as he and his
Houston Astros are halfway through the 2019 season. The 36-year-old ace through his first 17 starts has assembled an ERA of 2.67 - currently the fourth best of his career - and has
allowed 64 hits and 35 runs (34 earned). He has struck out 142 batters this year and has given up a slim 22 walks. His win-loss record this year as of Monday, June 24 is 10-3.
On Sunday, June 23 against the Yankees, Verlander threw seven innings and held the opposing hitters to 4 hits and 3 earned runs while walking 2 and striking out
9. He and his Astros beat the Yankees 9-4. The Astros were 49-30 as of Monday, June 24. They hold 1st place in the AL West, multiple games ahead of the Texas Rangers.

Correspondence continued from >6 State Inspector General Agency where he was handpicked and transferred to serve. He spent the last seven years there solving public corruption cases, including writing executive level reports to the Governor and various federal agencies. Because he feels so strongly about Public Safety for Goochlanders he has sacrificed much to campaign full time to be our Sheriff. Because he receives a pension from the City of Richmond Police Department, he decided to
resign from the State Inspector General’s Office so that he can campaign without conflict. Interestingly enough, if he had been employed by the State Police, he would have had to resign the day he filed to run for public office, per their policy. In this instance he chose to resign June 3 in order to expend more time and resources in pursuing the Office of Sheriff. That shows true commitment to Public Safety for our county, and that’s why I am supporting Levin White for Sheriff of Goochland County. Rick Grizzell Goochland

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County
June 27, 2019
Lyle continued from >12 Cisne were both elected that year as write-in candidates. Part of the low-awareness of the Conservation Director’s office is also attributable to the fact that serving as a Conservation Director is a volunteer position. The office pays no salary or stipend. There isn’t even a reserved parking space for Conservation Directors – not anywhere that I know of. (I even pay for my own business
cards.) As a consequence, candidates I know who run for Conservation Director in Virginia don’t raise and spend campaign money. No campaign advertising contributes to the low voter awareness for the office. (On the bright side…that also makes voters’ TV viewing and mailboxes safer. I’m not aware of anyone or any PAC running negative ads that beat-up on some candidate for Soil and Water Conservation Director.) So with low-voter-awareness, no compensation (and
no parking lot perks), why does someone – why am I – running to serve Goochland County as a Conservation Director? Why am I humbled to have been endorsed for reelection at the May 7 mass meeting? Because I think conservation is important — for all of us, not just Goochland’s farmers. If we do not support conservation and our farming community, urban sprawl in Goochland will become the new norm. Preserving the 85 percent open land and
farm land that the Board of Supervisors has defined as a goal in the Comprehensive Plan will become harder and harder to achieve. And even though the number of farms in Goochland is shrinking, the work the Conservation Office does IS important in slowing urban sprawl. Conservation helps Goochland improve water quality, it addresses soil erosion and it supports Goochland’s farmers as they implement agricultural best management practices

(BMPs). So, let me come full circle, back to The Gazette article regarding the May 7 mass meeting. I appreciate, welcome and am humbled to have received the Republican endorsement for Conservation Director. I believe that endorsement will help raise awareness for the office of Conservation Director, and that endorsement will raise awareness for my candidacy. But for the record, I’m an Independent candidate for re-election, not the nominee of any political party. In fact, as an Independent candidate, I would welcome the endorsement of any rightthinking group, organization or individual that believes – as I do – that working for clean water, effective soil management and a healthy, viable agricultural community in Goochland is a worth-while endeavor. (Now wouldn’t
that be a heck of a testimony to bipartisanship? — to see Goochland’s Democrat Committee (and Goochland’s cohort of Libertarians!) endorse me as well for reelection. Assuming they also agree that conservation is important, that conservation is non-partisan and that I’ve been faithful in working to “Keep Goochland Rural”.)
