or 2019 Miss Kansas Annika Wooton, the path to making her dream come true wasn’t the easiest one. And, unlike another famous resident of that great state, clicking her heels together three times wasn’t going to get it done. Instead, Wooton had to put in years of hard work, weather disappointment, and remain laser-focused on her goal. Fortunately, on June 8, all of that perseverance finally paid off when the former Manakin-Sabot resident was announced as the winner of the 2019 Miss Kansas Pageant. The photos from that day show her elation as she received her crown, the moment that officially kicked off the full year that the title will be hers. But while the former Miss Wichita certainly enjoys all of the glitter and glitz that goes along with being a pagsee Wooton > 2

Those who work with Goochland Chief Deputy Treasurer Pamela Duncan have known for a long time just how valuable she is to the county Treasurer’s Office. Now, it seems, many more people know it as well. On Friday, June 14, Duncan was named the Deputy Treasurer of the Year at the Treasurers’ Association of Virginia Annual Conference in Arlington, recognizing the exemplary work she does as Chief Deputy Treasurer. DUNCAN “I am completely overwhelmed to receive this great honor,” said Duncan, who wears several hats in her current role. The Chief Deputy position in the Goochland Office encompasses the tasks of day-to-day management of all operations, as well as daily balancing and posting of collections and accounts, monthly reconciliation, see Duncan > 2

Duncan continued from >1 and the creation and implementation of new processes. During the past year, in addition to these duties, Duncan also served on the Financial System Software Committee to review and select new software for the office. Duncan was also part of the software implementation committee, which required her attendance at several meetings each month to oversee the plans for implementation. It was also during this time that the office had to implement the Life-Time Dog Licensing program. Duncan
oversaw that change and made the necessary adjustments to the accounting system to implement the new programs successfully as well as training staff for the new procedures. To Treasurer Pam Johnson, who officially retired this week, the honor for Duncan was well-deserved. With Johnson leaving, Duncan will be leading the office until a new Treasurer is elected later this year. “I was proud to nominate Pam Duncan for this statewide award,” Johnson said. “Mrs. Duncan earned the honor and I am happy that her work has been recognized by the Treasurers’ Association.”

eant contestant, Wooton insists that isn’t the part she likes best. In truth, as Wooton explained last week from the road as she travelled to one of the many appearances she will make this year on behalf of the Miss America organization, it is serving her community that brings her the most satisfaction. And that includes promoting her platform of making the arts accessible to all. In addition to serving on the board of the Kansas Alliance for the Arts in Education, Wooton has created a program to help connect students interested in careers in the arts with local professionals in the field — fitting for a contestant who showed off her skills as a speed painter for the talent portion of the Miss Kansas competition. Wooton, who moved
back to her native Kansas from Goochland to attend the University of Kansas after graduating from Collegiate in 2012, said she considers herself fortunate to be able to compete alongside the many talented young women she has met since beginning her pageant journey nearly a decade ago in the Greater Richmond Outstanding Teen competition. “These are such driven women with incredible goals, serving their communities,” said Wooton, explaining that, as times have changed, the pageant world has as well. While the glamour remains, some aspects, including the swimsuit competition, have been phased out. The focus of the organization, she said, “is preparing great women for the world and preparing the world for great women.” Wooton’s parents still live
in Goochland and are both incredibly proud of what their daughter has accomplished. Wooton’s parents will be watching later this year when she competes in the Miss America pageant, though the date and location for that event have not yet been determined. Since she is 25 — the last year of eligibility for a contestant in the Miss America organization — Wooton’s upcoming try will mark the last time she competes for the crown. But rather than look wistfully back, Wooten insists she’s thrilled at the opportunity she has already earned. And she’s looking forward to being involved with the Miss America program for years to come. “It’s one year that you get to be Miss Kansas,” Wooton said, “but it’s your whole life that you get to be involved with this empowering organization.”

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
Does getting older always mean ‘growing up’? By Roslyn Ryan Editor
I had a birthday last week, one of the big ones, and, while I won’t divulge just how big (lest people start insisting I act my age), I’ll simply say that I am now, in no uncertain terms, a grown-up. I’d rather not say I’m “old,” preferring to leave that term for stately houses and the takeout sushi you forgot was in your fridge. And yet the dumb things I do now fall firmly under the heading of “You Should Know Better By Now.” People under 25 automatically assume I have never heard of
the music they listen to (I usually haven’t) and that I don’t know how to use Snapchat (I don’t). I am not asked for my opinion on the happening new spot downtown, or urged to check it out, on the assumption that I probably like to watch Jeopardy and then go to bed (I do). To be honest, I should have seen this coming. I was warned about the aches and pains that would come as the years slid by (“Why does that hurt today?”) and so far that part is as advertised. But another big clue was that I had caught myself in recent years
waxing nostalgic about things like tape decks and old-school answering machines, the kind that you had to be home to hear, which I know actual young people have no clue about. My grandmother used to tell me that the strangest part of getting older was the fact that you stay you, even as the world tends to start seeing you as someone else. I got it then, but not quite as much as I do now. And I wish she was still here so I could tell her that. In fact, there are a whole lot of people that I wish were still here, and that might be the worst part about getting older, far worse than
having to have Fortnite explained to me for the fifth time (still don’t get the appeal of that game). Just for the record, I know an awful lot of people who are technically much older than I am who also are living wonderfully full, adventurous and exciting lives. They are plugged-in, engaged in their communities and still serving as incredible examples of the fact that getting older doesn’t have to mean you stop learning or challenging yourself. I’ll certainly be looking to them for inspiration and guidance on how to truly make the most out of this next chapter. But first I might take a nap.
Vacationing with ‘Mothman’ sounds like a plan to some By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
Turns out those free oil changes for life can be more enlightening than you expected. While awaiting service at a local dealership, I found a small table and pulled out my laptop and quietly began working on an article for the upcoming week’s newspaper. A gentleman about my age asked how to access the wifi and I explained it would appear when he booted his computer and all he had
to do was click “yes”. That started a conversation that I at first thought would be brief, but it turned out the stranger was a retired journalist who was on summer vacation with his wife when their car required service. The couple was from Charleston, South Carolina, and were heading to West Virginia for a week-long stay. “Where you headed to in West Virginia?”, I politely asked. “We’re headed to Point Pleasant to search for the Mothman,” the man laughed.

I suppose he didn’t realize he was speaking to a dedicated devotee of a legend that has intrigued folks for decades, and he seemed surprised that I knew of what he was speaking. Their interests were spiked when they saw a movie called “Mothman” Prophecies starring Richard Gere and Laura Linney, and thought a visit to the small hamlet would make an interesting and unique vacation. I explained that I had never been to Point Pleasant but was well acquainted with the Mothman leg-
acy, and how the terror associated with it had gripped a community in the late 1960s. In 1966, a series of troubling reports and sightings of a strange moth/man combination stalking the community became prevalent in and around Point Pleasant. Locals who had encountered the beast described it as about 6 to 7 feet tall with folded wings and red eyes. The origins of the phenomenon are still to this day unknown, but the legend has grown as the decades see Mothman > 7

Letters to the Editor Voters must carefully consider candidates’ qualifications in race for Goochland sheriff Dear Editor, Rick Grizzell’s letter in the Gazette June 27 issue is absolutely correct regarding the qualifications of the three candidates running for Sheriff. As everyone should know by now I also support Levin White for sheriff because of his superior law enforcement and investigative experience far beyond that of Deputy Creasey or Mr. Fisher. As a lifelong Republican I strongly disagree with the minority of Goochland Republicans who voted to endorse Deputy Steve Creasey for sheriff at a recent Republican mass meeting. I think the small group of Goochland Republicans that attended the Republican mass meeting and voted to endorse Creasey were influenced by a slick well done Creasey campaign and the Creasy eyesore signs all over the County. Deputy Creasey deserves credit for the turnout of his supporters at the Republican mass meeting but not for his qualifications to be Sheriff. As Rick Grizzell points out, 20 years of service as a junior deputy in our Sheriff’s Department certainly does not make Steve Creasey qualified to be our next Sheriff. And Sheriff Agnew has made another mistake, among many I hear, by supporting Deputy Creasey as his replacement. I only hope the majority of Goochland Republicans and Democrats alike have enough sense to truly evaluate the resumes of the candidates for Sheriff and make a good decision in the best long term interest of Goochland County. ically-altered being created from the ashes of that weapons plant, the events have marked Point Pleasant as the place to begin the search for Mothman. There are museums,a local festival, moth man themed promotions, and you can even buy a local pizza designed in the image of — you guessed it — Mothman. There’s a statue of the creature strategically and proudly displayed in the downtown area. But, don’t expect the locals to embrace the hoards of people who visit annually to somehow reclaim the legend. Most of the people who encountered the other worldly beast are dead and buried, and many others have long dis-
counted the story behind the legend. I told the stranger at the auto dealer little of this background and explained that I had a limited knowledge of the enhanced tale, but thought that he and his wife would enjoy the peaceful and beautiful surroundings in Point Pleasant. Their car was ready before the work was completed on mine, so they came back over to the table to say goodbye. “Wish us luck,” the man said as they prepared to leave. “I hope we find the Mothman.” “I hope you don’t,” I said with a smile. The legend lives on in wonderful West Virginia.
continued from >6 pass, and Point Pleasant has become the centerpiece of a universal effort to keep the story alive. Why Point Pleasant? No one knows exactly, but the town is located adjacent to a closed munitions factory that produced God only knows what during World War II. The Mothman hysteria culminated in November 1967 when the Silver Bridge spanning the Ohio River collapsed on a cold November evening, claiming 46 lives. Following the disaster, some people who survived recalled the terrifying site of two red eyes sitting atop the bridge’s tower shortly before the collapse, and to this day, many believe the collapse was a result of the Mothman’s wrath. Engineers who studied the collapse begged to differ, citing deficient steel in one of the beams supporting the bridge. But, as my neighbor said, Mothman was never heard from again in Point Pleasant. Today, Point Pleasant appears just like any other quiet riverfront town on the Ohio, the Silver Bridge long replaced and thoughts of evil creatures remaining only in the minds of those the locals call believers. But, the town has taken full advantage of the mystery, and whether it was a winged intruder, aliens or some genet-

She kept up her upbeat countenance all the way to the end, when she finished ahead of her competitors in her Goochland Manta Rays’ June 26 outdoor swim meet to win the event. She and her Goochland teammates overall put together a performance that they could beam about. Not only did the score go the Manta Rays’ way, as they had the advantage over visiting Mechanicsville due to numbers - “The Mechanicsville swimmers were terrific and a great group to compete with - Goochland head coach Helen Brown pointed out - but Goochland made it a meet to remember by breaking several Goochland Team Yard Records and recording 220 new personal best times. The Manta Rays set 46 new personal bests in the 8 and under groupings and tallied up a whopping 174 personal bests among the swimmers ages 9 and up. “This means 60 percent of our swims were personal best
times,” Brown said - which, she added, is “a pretty good number considering that the warm afternoons sometimes affect the swimmers’ performance.” Swimming in the boys’ 9-10 events, Lucas Salser broke Goochland Team Yard Records in the 50 freestyle (30.56), the 100 freestyle (1:07.69) and the 50 breaststroke (38.97). Ethan Salser set new records in the boys’ 11-12 50 backstroke (31.59) and 50 butterfly events (28.88). Records were also broken by Avetis Saakian (boys’ 11-12 100 free, 1:09.65), Garrett Kemmerly (boys 15-18 50 free, 24.25), Anna Kate Wirsing (girls’ 15-18 100 free, 1:03.35) and Sophia Summitt (girls’ 15-18 50 fly, 32.56). Quad winners for Goochland were Luca Gardner, Joseph Hardman, Ryan Johnson, Abby Pillion, Avetis Saakian, Lucas Salser and Anna Kate Wirsing. Triple winners were Sasha Babic, Bowen Barton, Zachary Cheatham, Audrey Darden, Elle Freeman, Garrett Kemmerly, Kaysen Mills, Alexander Salser, Ethan Salser and Jessica Valdez. Brown praised the support of the swim team’s parents. “Parents are the key to a successful summer program. I am honored to work with such a great group of parents,” she said. “Second goes to our volun-

They enjoyed watching the races of the swimmers they are mentoring.” Goochland’s upcoming meets are on Wednesday, July 3 at home versus the Battlefield Green Ferocious Frogs, on the road against the Wembly Waves (1311 Gaskins Rd., Richmond) on Wednesday, July 10, and at home on Tuesday, July 16 versus the Raintree Rapids. All three meets begin at 6 p.m.

Bulldogs’ Gallegos delivers all-state season By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
GOOCHLAND – For Julissa Gallegos, soccer is a family affair. As she grew up playing, she developed a passion for the game. “As I play, everything around me is shut off,” she said, “and I can only focus on the game and help the team win.” The rising Goochland High School senior first played for the Goochland United Soccer Association when she was around 8. As she got older, she went on to compete for the Goochland JV team her 8th grade year before joining the varsity team as a freshman. Outside of school soccer, she’s sharpened her skills through her continued play with Kickers Elite. This year as a junior, Gallegos contributed to a young but talented Bulldogs team that delivered a 12-6 season in 2019 and battled its way to the regional semifinals. “We did well from the beginning of the year to the end of the year working to be where we got in the regionals…our defense was pretty strong,” she said, adding: “We got it pushed in our mind that: Hey, we need to actually focus.” When it came to her

head coach Paul Manno complimented the power and pace

she made this year as far as finding that necessary lower gear after shedding defenders on the fast break in order to foot the ball into the goal on easy passes. Gallegos this year took on a new role as a team captain and, with that role, strived to make sure that everyone was on top of their game and playing together as a team. She felt she helped her teammates by providing them with a model of a player who worked hard, thereby motivating them to aspire to work hard as well. Gallegos’ efforts this year earned her a place on VHSL’s all-state second team in Class 2 girls’ soccer. But for the Goochland standout, her focus is on the fact that she gets to play the sport she loves. “If I didn’t get it, it wouldn’t have mattered,” she said, “because it’s just a title.” Coming off a winning season but a tough loss to Poquoson in the regional semifinals, Gallegos emphasized the need for the Bulldogs to take everything seriously and work as a team in the spring of 2020. “I’m excited because it’s my senior year and it’s my last, knowing how the girls that are coming up to varsity are doing a good job,” Gallegos said, also pointing to the Bulldogs’ goal of going even further than they did this year.
PRO CORNER Roth takes flight with GCL Orioles After getting drafted by the Baltimore Orioles, with the 768th overall selection in the 26th round of the MLB Draft, Randolph-Macon College standout and right-
handed pitcher Nick Roth III - who’s also a Benedictine alumnus - impressed in his debut with the Gulf Coast League Orioles with two innings of work . He allowed no hits, no runs and no walks in that stretch while also striking out three batters. According to Benedictine
Baseball on Twitter, it was 6 up, 6 down for Roth, who also reportedly threw all 12 of his pitches for strikes. According to RandolphMacon Athletics, Roth was named All-America First Team by the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings, All-
America Second Team by D3baseball.com and Pitcher of the Year in the South Region by ABCA/Rawlings and D3baseball.com. Roth was also voted the ODAC Pitcher of the Year according to R-MC. The Gulf Coast League is a rookie-level Minor Baseball
League. Roth and his GCL Orioles won their first three games through June 26. For the Baltimore Orioles, talk is centered more-so on the future than the present, as they are mired in a tough 23-58 campaign after June 28, one year after suffering a 47-115 mark in 2018.

Increased protections for animals among new laws in effect Editor’s note: R.E. “Trip” Chalkley III, commonwealth’s attorney for Hanover County, submitted the following information about laws that went into effect on Monday.) As always, July 1, 2019, will see new laws and amendments to existing statutes take effect in the Commonwealth. The following is a summary of those new statutes and amendments to existing laws. The definition of “adequate shelter” for certain animals was amended to require
the provision of shelter that, during hot weather, is shaded and does not readily conduct heat and, during cold weather, has a windbreak at its entrance and provides sufficient bedding material. It is now required that in order to meet the mandate that an animal be given adequate space, a tether must be at least three (3) times the length of the animal or ten (10) feet in length, whichever is greater and not cause injury or pain, not weigh more than one-tenth of the animal’s
TUESDAY EVENING 4 PM 4:30
body weight, or have weights or heavy objects attached to it. Agricultural animals are exempted. An amendment provides that any person who tortures, willfully inflicts inhumane injury or pain not connected with bona fide scientific or medical experimentation, or cruelly and unnecessarily beats, maims, or mutilates any dog or cat that is a companion animal, whether belonging to him or another, and as a direct result causes serious bodily injury
to such animal, is guilty of a Class 6 felony (up to 5 years in prison or up to 12 months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine). Previously the animal had to die to subject the offender to a felony punishment. The trial court is now empowered to defer proceedings in the adjudication of a dog as “dangerous”. The court is required to place conditions upon the owner and, upon a violation, the court may impose existing penalties. If the conditions are fulfilled, the
court shall dismiss the proceedings. It will be a Class 1 misdemeanor (up to 12 months in jail and/or a $2,500.00 fine) for any person to knowingly, with the intent to mislead a law enforcement agency, cause another to give a false report to any law enforcement official by publicly simulating any crime against the person or crime against property. Any person who buys and removes timber from a landowner’s property is guilty of
theft should he fail to pay by the date specified in a written agreement. If there is no written agreement, payment is to be made within 60 days of removal. A buyer’s failure to pay after the deadline within 10 days of receiving a demand for payment shall be prima facie evidence of intent to violate the statute. One guilty of such theft is subject to the penalty for a Class 1 misdemeanor, and also, shall be ordered to pay three times the value of the timber removed.
