Anyone visiting the Goochland County Courthouse complex over the last several months will likely have noticed the ongoing construction work taking place in front of the county’s stately Jeffersonian courthouse building. The project, a new security screening building, is intended to help mitigate ongoing security concerns and to provide a safe, secure, protected area for deputies to screen those going in and out of the courthouse. Upon completion, the 1,047 square foot building will also help keep noise and distraction inside the courthouse itself to a
minimum, since those coming and going—including prisoners being led in and out—will no longer need to use the single front door leading in and out of the building. Goochland County Sheriff James Agnew said the improvements will also be a welcome change for those deputies who currently occupy the large tent in front of the courthouse that has been serving as the temporary screening area. Agnew said the new building was carefully designed so mimic the design of the courthouse building, which has been described by architectural historian Gibson Worsham as “the best pre-served public courthouse square in Virginia and the most architectur-
ally perfect Jeffersonian courthouse in existence today.” Last September the county Board of Supervisors appropriated the initial funds for the project in the amount of $450,000. In March of this year, the Board authorized Goochland County Administrator John Budesky to execute an agreement with Caspian Construction, LLC for the construction of the new screening building and appropriate an additional $283,000 from CIP reserve funds to complete the work and allow for a seven percent contingency. According to Budesky, the project is now under-roof and is expected to be fully completed by the end of the year.

Spoonhower earns BZA certification Goochland resident Neil Spoonhower was recently congratulated by Goochland Director of Community Development Jo Ann Hunter upon receiving his Board of Zoning Appeals Certification from Virginia Commonwealth University. Shortly after Spoonhower was appointed to the Goochland Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) by District 2 Board of Supervisors Chair Manuel Alvarez in 2017, the county offered the opportunity to participate in the 37th Certified Board of Zoning Appeals Program conducted by the VCU Land Use Education Program. “I really didn’t have to think twice says Spoonhower. “I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn more about zoning regulations, the role of the BZA and how it fits into our local government. The BZA meets monthly to hear appeals from citizens who disagree with decisions rendered by county planning staff. River Run continued from >1 asking price of $7.9 million to $6.8 million in 2015, the home has remained vacant since first going up for sale shortly after Massie’s death in 2014. As Kim Moody explained to commission members, she and her husband Andrew now hope to breathe new life into the property, as well as to find a more permanent base of operations for her career as a wedding and events planner. The Moodys have partnered in the venture with Goochland residents Doug and Tamara Adams, owners of Adams International School on Route 250, and hope to host around 36 weddings a year on the property. To do that, they will need to obtain a Conditional Use Permit from the county and meet a number of specified requirements, including taking steps to mitigate the
impact on neighboring properties. In addition to limiting most events to no more than 299 guests, noise and light disturbances would be tightly controlled. While the Planning Commission ultimately voted 4-1 in support of the proposal — with District 2 commissioner Matt Brewer casting the lone vote against it — several residents who live near the River Run Manor site expressed grave concerns about how the project would negatively impact their own quality of life. Chief among the issues raised was a desire to maintain the quiet, rural charm of the area, which is currently zoned primarily for agricultural use. Addressing those concerns, Moody noted that the couple’s plans for the property would actually bring less noise and traffic than those of another potential buyer who has also been eyeing the estate for a
similar use. The land could also be subdivided and developed into individual lots, which could potentially bring more noise and traffic with fewer options to regulate it. “We hope that we can come in and be good neighbors, Moody said, noting that most of the clients she works with prefer to host their events indoors and would not create noise loud enough to impact nearby property owners. If ultimately approved by the Board of Supervisors, The Estate at River Run would join a number of already operating events venues of various sizes scattered throughout the county, including Dover Hall in Manakin Sabot, Bandits Ridge near the LouisaGoochland line, and Running Mare in Maidens. Adams International School is also approved for use as an events venue, with the ability to host up to 700 people at a time.

Cidery owners press on despite bridge work detouring customers By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Despite a major construction project taking place just steps from their Goochland cidery, Courthouse Creek Cider owners Eric and Liza Cioffi insist that their operation remains very much open for business. While the ongoing repairs to the bridge over Courthouse Creek are expected to have part of Maidens Road shut down until some time in October — meaning anyone who
wants to visit the cidery coming West from Route 6 will need to go up to Fairground Rd, take a right and then take another right on Maidens — Liza said she’s hoping it won’t put a damper on what has been a strong summer turnout for the four-yearold operation. “We’re hoping we don’t see too much of a drop off, said Liza, who has also been working with VDOT to make sure potential customers know that the signs indicating only local traffic is allowed on the road do not
apply to them. “If we are open you are still more than welcome to drive down, she said. Courthouse Creek Cider is located at 1581 Maidens Road (the company also has another bustling location in Richmond’s Scott’s Addition) and the tasting room is open Fridays from 5-8 p.m., Saturdays from 12-7 p.m., and Sunday from 12-5 p.m. For more information, visit the company on Facebook or on the web at www.courthousecreek. com.

County approves service district after residents stuck with bill for road work By Roslyn Ryan Editor
After weighing several options, the county appears to have reached a solution for the Bridgewater subdivision’s road woes, problems that began when residents of the 31-site community in Maidens were informed that they could be on the hook for roadwork left incomplete when the neighborhood’s developer, Copperstone LLC, went out of
business in 2010. Many residents were outraged to learn last year that they would need to find a way to pay to have the roads brought up to VDOT standards, a condition for approval of the subdivision plat in 2006. Now however, after exploring a number of options, the county has approved a plan that includes the creation of a Road Service District for Bridgewater. The district will provide
a means to collect between $82,000 and $105,000 that Bridgewater residents could pay toward the road improvements, a figure that represents the remaining balance after the county contributed $164,000 toward the completion of the work and an additional $50,000 to VDOT for turn lanes into the subdivision from Broad Street. For the next 10 years, each Bridgewater property owner will pay an additional sum
twice a year — depending on the size of their lot — to cover the costs. The fee will be billed with their property taxes, although the full amount may be prepaid if a resident chooses. The full cost of the road improvement project will include $234,202 to be paid to Blakemore Construction for the completion of the work, a $12,000 project management fee, and a contingency fee to cover any unexpected costs. .

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County
Despite setbacks, show goes on for Goochland’s new community theater Group planning to stage musical, holiday show in coming months By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Goochland’s new community theater is looking for a few good men. More specifically, executive director Jennifer Layton needs male actors to audition for roles in the company’s upcoming productions. It seems much of the response to recent audition calls has been from women, leaving Layton with a handful of roles she isn’t able to fill. For Layton, finding talent has been just one challenge of founding Goochland Community Theatre, a passion project she dove into after years of dreaming and planning. In addition to securing the rights to perform the productions and finding the funding to stage them, there is the matter of obtaining the group’s non-profit designation and making sure rehearsal space is available when they need it. The endeavor is led and managed by volunteers, which means that almost everyone on the Board of Directors— including Layton, who works fulltime as a dispatcher for Goochland County—must juggle staging plays with the demands of their day jobs.
And then, of course, there is the issue of finding the actors. Layton, who herself has had roles as an extra in the 2004 television movie “Iron Jawed Angles” and the Showtime series “Homeland”, says there has been plenty of local enthusiasm for the project, and that recent auditions drew a number of talented actors. Layton said she isn’t sure why the men are missing out, but suspects there may be those of both genLAYTON ders who are concerned about the time commitment involved. On that, Lay ton insists the JONES group is willing to work with people who may need a bit of flexibility. The theater is about working together to create memorable productions and helping residents express their creativity, Layton said, and even those who aren’t interested in acting are encouraged to get involved behind the scenes. The project is actually a family affair for Layton, whose son Joshua Jones has also taken on a major role with
the group while also attending Old Dominion University fulltime. Like everyone else involved, he has been learning as he goes and reaching out to established programs to see what has — and hasn’t — worked for them, and said he has relished the opportunity to be a part of the burgeoning local movement. The Goochland Community Theatre is currently planning to stage productions of varying styles, from musicals to children’s plays, and eventually to offer a scholarship for upcoming college students interested in pursuing a degree in theater. It may be a few months before the curtain finally goes up: despite their strong start, the team ultimately decided to forgo staging the first production they had planned after realizing that they would likely not have enough time to plan and rehearse before the originally planned opening date. Layton insisted, however, that she is committed to giving Goochland the local community theater experience it deserves. “If I get knocked down, I’m going to get right back up,” Layton said. “Yes, I’ve got challenges, but I’m not giving up.” For more information on the Goochland Community Theatre, visit the group on Facebook or email goochlandcommunitytheatre@ gmail.com.

Mistake offers more than one kind of lesson By Roslyn Ryan Editor
“Honey,” my husband said, “what about the dog?” We had just parked the car in our driveway and he had gotten out and headed to the mailbox. I had gathered my purse, my drink, my phone and my sunglasses and began walking toward the front door. I was worn down after an especially long day but also intently focused on the dinner that still needed to be made and the inbox full of emails still waiting to be answered. I needed
to water the garden. There was an appointment that needed to be rescheduled before the doctor’s office closed in 15 minutes. Keep going, keep pushing, keep checking things off the list. The dog. As my husband looked at me quizzically, I suddenly realized that our 12-year-old, 75-pound lab was still in the back seat of the car I had just walked away from. The temperature was in the mid-90s. I had completely forgotten he was there. At that moment, a little voice in my head insisted that I would have remembered, that I would have
rushed back to the car and gotten him out within seconds of walking in the front door and realizing what I had done. That nothing terrible would have happened. That is what I want to believe. But then I think about if the distractions had continued — if the phone rang as soon as I got in the house, if something else had demanded my immediate attention, if my husband had not reminded me about the dog — what could have happened? We all say that things like this would never happen to us— heck, I’ve said that. And yet there I was.
I could make excuses: The dog was sluggish after a minor surgery and unusually quiet. We rarely have him in the car at that time. It had been such a very, very long day. All of them are just that excuses. I try to use moments like these to remind myself to slow down and to focus, but also to extend a measure of mercy to others who make mistakes I can t fathom I would ever commit. “There but for the grace of God go I,” the English reformer John Bradford is remembered for saying. Buddy, don t I know it.
‘Fill the Boot’ tradition: Humble origins, lofty goals By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
Looking for someone who gives back with selfless dedication and values the lives of his fellow citizens more than their own? One doesn’t have to search long to find a group of citizens who live by the code each and every day — America’s Fire and EMS workers. And while most of us take those lifesaving services for granted until the need arises, their dedication and devotion to our safety is non-stop and unwavering.
And while some may be lucky enough to live a lifetime with no personal interaction with these dedicated servants, many more have personal stories where these individuals provided invaluable help, or made the difference between life and death. On the most challenging nights of my life was when one of my twins decided not to allow her arrival to wait for the hospital, the first voice I heard coming down my hallway to help was a group of firemen. It wasn’t life and death, but their presence assured a good outcome

to an emergency I certainly had not anticipated. But, something firefighters across the nation are doing this month can make the difference between life and death. Throughout the month of August, you’ll notice many of them standing outside your local mall or grocery store collecting money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the people affected by debilitating muscle disease. It’s a campaign with humble beginnings called “Fill the Boot,” named appropriately for the meth-
od used by firefighters to hold donations. An old boot symbolized the effort, and, over the years, has become the single most defining icon for the event. For families like mine, the effort has provided an effort for my son and thousands of others affected with MD to establish relationships with Fire/EMS that are special and unique. Letters to the Editor Habitat’s mission a success thanks to community support, but more help needed Goochland Gazette Editor, Over the past 23 years, Habitat for Humanity of Goochland County (HHG) has built 25 affordable single-family homes in our community. That is more than one house per thousand country residents, which is considered the operational gold standard for Habitat affiliates. Habitat houses are not free housing. We build the homes and then sell them at cost to our partner families who, in turn, pay us back through a no-interest loan over a 30-year term. The mortgage payments we get from them are then used to partially fund ongoing construction. Our operational system has worked well over the years. Private donations to fund our operations along with generous volunteerism supporting our construction has been a successful operating model. But HHG is desiring to achieve more scale going forward, with a goal of building two to three houses per year. To do this, we are facing some headwinds. Land costs have dramatically increased in the county, are continuing to rise at a rapid rate, and that has increased our net building costs by over 35 percent. This increases our operating budget and the purchase cost we pass on to our partner families. The service we provide affordable housing – is one of the most significant catalysts in breaking the poverty cycle. Most of our client families reduce their monthly housing outlays from $900+ per month (rent) to $400 per month toward home ownership. It is easy to see how this is such a game-changer. So how can you help GHH see Letters > page 7

School readiness initiative receives $100K grant to assist Goochland families Letters continued from >6 scale up and continue this vital community service? First, we are in dire need of affordable land on which to build our homes. If you have land in the county and are willing to donate it (optimal) or sell at a reduced market price, it would be a major catalyst in our growth plans. Second, we need funding. Until this year, we have relied primarily on private contributions solicited via our annual newsletter that we send out November. While we have been blessed with generous private community support, we are now looking to expand to engage corporate and business sponsors. This year, we were most fortunate to partner with HHHunt, who provided generous funds and volunteer manpower to assist us on this year s house construction. Their generous sponsorship has been a game-changer for this year s operation and we

Jack has visited a number of firehouses as an MDA ambassador, and it’s hard to describe the magic that occurs when they gather. Creasey has spent life putting family and community first Dear Editor, I write this editorial with
These battle-tested men and women are never too busy to bend down and help a child or take a minute to let them know they are special ... and important. They also know the only solution to this devastating problem is money and the ton of it needed to find a cure. They take time away from their families to help children they don’t know my name, but are well acquainted and joined with on a common mission. Whether it’s helping a child attend MDA Camp at no cost to parents, or provid-
mixed feelings. While I am excited to see Sergeant Steven Creasey pursue his dream of becoming Sheriff of Goochland County, it saddens me to see that it comes at the expense of his family’s good name. I have lived in the county for over 60 years and actually lived next to the Creasey family for over 20 of those 60+ years. I can say without hesitation that you will not find a better family dedicated to helping others. Ned Creasey was a dear friend and served on the Board of Supervisors with honor and commitment, his son Shawn has been a dependable deputy, wife Diana dedicated her life as a nurse along with his daughter Teresa. He was also so very proud of his son Scott, daughter Tonia, his grandchildren who serve as Marines, and even a reputable veterinarian here in the county. I feel it doesn’t even need to be said but seeing his son Steven dedicate his entire career to the Goochland Sheriff’s depart-
ing research for cutting-edge solutions that might lead to the final victory, this group of professionals knows no bounds regarding fundraising and the ultimate importance of those dollars. So, next time you see a firefighter or EMS worker holding a boot, remember those kids facing an unrelenting killer and the group of heroes determined to do something about it. Keep in mind those dollars placed in the boot represent more than currency for thousands of victims affected

resources, and leverage effective public/ private collaboration to support opportunities for the healthy development of young children. As the regional convener for early childhood education, Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond represents a partnership
ment and doing so at the highest level made Ned extremely proud. Let me be clear in saying that any candidate for sheriff that wants to go knocking on doors to simply smear a family’s good name versus talking about what makes them the best candidate, will get nowhere in this election. If you want to go toe to toe when it comes to honesty, integrity, ethics, character, you will fall well short. Larry and Jane Proffitt Manakin-Sabot
White’s experience, skills make him best choice for sheriff Dear Editor, As citizens of the Commonwealth, we have an election every year. This year, our lovely county, will elect Board of Supervisor and School Board members and also, this year, a new Sheriff. All very important, as we would like Goochland to be
by MD. For children and the families who love them, each donation is a step toward a cure, a morsel of hope on a foreboding landscape. I have a personal stake in this battle, but the efforts of these dedicated public servants provides a message of service and compassion for all. Their amazing spirit somehow makes all of us better human beings, and reminds that we are not on this earth alone. For Jack, it has a much simpler message: You’ve got a friend.

among public and private agencies, businesses and individuals serving the cities of Richmond and Colonial Heights, as well as Chesterfield, Charles City, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent and Powhatan counties.
rural, but also, to grow in a sane and safe way. We will be impacted by this growth, especially in the eastern part. Some growth good, some not so good-like human trafficking with the new hotel on Broad St. We must be ready! The race for sheriff has been an eye opener, to say the least. If a person is a citizen and willing, they have a right to run for office, even if it is a challenge to the “good ole boy network”. We should all want someone that will serve all the citizens without bias. Nor should they have to fear the retribution by innuendos to smear their reputation or especially to their family members reputation by the opposition. After hearing the candidates speak and doing my own research, there is a clear choice. We need a candidate that has a wealth of experience in differ-
ent areas of law enforcement. Someone that has moved forward with an upward progression in their years of service. With that evidence, that would be Levin White I encourage everyone to review Mr. White’s 12 point plan for a safer Goochland, a plan he put together over a year ago. We need a sheriff that is proactive, ahead of the changes and challenges. Mr. White has lived in Goochland for 17 years and he has worked hard in the ranks of law enforcement in Richmond. Experience that will secure Goochland’s future. Please attend a candidate forum, ask your questions and vote Nov. 5. The Sheriff’s Forum is Sept. 24, 7 p.m. in the Goochland High School auditorium. Precious Valuables of the Poor
Matthew 5:3 - “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” All people need the Lord but not all realize it and admit it. Some do. The poverty Jesus speaks of is a deep sense of spiritual bankruptcy. This starting point opens the door to allowing God to reign and rule over us by His loving will.
Have you considered your need of Him?

MIDLOTHIAN – The race’s end result didn’t have them listed in first place. But for a string of moments in that mixed 15-18 200-yard freestyle junior varsity relay, the Goochland YMCA Manta Rays were the fastest team in SwimRVA’s competition pool. Blistering swims catapulted the relay team of Summit Caul, Garrett Kemmerly, Annelise Rogerson and Anna Kate Wirsing all the way from near the rear of the field to a close second and a seed time-beating swim of 1:47.42. “That was great,” said the Manta Rays’ head coach Helen Brown. “Wasn’t sure how it was going to go; several of those kids are now crosstraining for triathlon, so yesterday they were in a very long training period, so they were pretty tired today (Sunday, July 28). They brought it out at the end.” It was a highlight to the second day in the Greater Richmond Aquatic League CHAMPS meet, which featured the 13-and-older swimmers and saw Goochland rise to the top spot in Division 4 and finish 10th best overall. The mixed 13-14 200 yard medley relay team also shined for Goochland in the varsity division, which was the top division for that particular event. Joseph Hardman, Alexander Salser, Kaysen Mills and Bowen Barton slashed into their seed time of 2:09.27 with a third-place swim and a senior varsity time of 2:05.79. Brown praised the same elements with the older swimmers that she did with the 12-andyounger competitors the day before: starts, turns and finishes, which is what her team focuses on.
“The kids did great,” she said. “I was really impressed.” Several of the YMCA team’s older swimmers are slated to swim for high school, so what Brown liked was “watching how hard they worked now and knowing that they’re going to see results when they get to their high school team.” Salser wrestled for a while, then came back to swim in the summer. By the end of the GRAL season, he was dropping times and almost broke his minute in the 100 yard freestyle. Brown praised how he dropped times in every one of his swims on Sunday. She added that Hardman’s first two swims were “phenomenal” as he placed first in the junior varsity (JV) division of the boys’ 13-14 50 yard backstroke with a 29.71 - two seconds faster than his seed time - and third in the JV 100 yard individual medley (IM) with a 1:08.38, also an improvement by 1.9 seconds. He swam fifthbest in the varsity 50 yard butterfly with a 29.84. Annelise Rogerson led the 13-and-older girls for Goochland with finishes of sixth in the senior varsity (SV) division of the girls’ 15-18 100 IM (1:05.42), seventh in the SV 50 breaststroke (34.33), eighth in the SV 100 breaststroke (1:15.54) and second in the varsity division of the 50 butterfly (an SV time of 28.80). Kemmerly was ninth in the SV division of the boys’ 15-18 100 yard freestyle (53.05); he also swam sixth-best in both the varsity 50 breaststroke (SV time of 31.47) and the varsity 100 backstroke (1:02.15). Excitement, enjoyment, talent at center of camp Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor
GOOCHLAND – Rising senior Libero and defensive specialist Ellie Spencer didn’t start playing volleyball until she was in seventh grade because she didn’t really know about the sport before then. So when it came to the potential volleyball players — as old as rising high school freshmen and as young as rising fourth graders — attending Goochland High School’s summer volleyball camp held July 22-24, Spencer thought it was really good for the students to get to know about it at a young age, so that – when they get to middle school – they can try-out and grow the Goochland program. “It’s always better to start them early,” second-year Goochland Volleyball head coach Rachel Jacobsen said. “If they realize they love it, they have more time to play because that was something I didn’t have when I was younger.” “There’s a lot of kids here with a lot of raw talent; there’s so many kids with a lot of potential that you don’t usually see,” Goochland rising senior setter Trinity Wonderling said of the campers. “And a lot of them said that they never played before…they were just interested in the camp, and it’s kind of cool to see that they can grow really fast and be able to play the sport.” The camp teaches the basics first, making sure that everyone’s got a foundation in passing, setting, hitting and defending. Emphasis was on serving and passing, because “the best way to win games,” Jacobsen said, “is to have a good passing basis and a good serving basis.” Once that foundation’s in place, the coaches and instructors start adding in movement and teamrelated skills before capping the three-day stretch with games. The campers worked together in team settings on Wednesday, playing different sorts of volleyball-related games and winning points for their team to decide a camp winner.
Nick Vandeloecht/Goochland Gazette
Campers work on sending the ball over the net at the Goochland High School Volleyball Camp.
“They’ve had a lot of fun together,” Jacobsen said. “Our team really enjoys working with the younger girls. They’ve made a lot of friends — I know a couple of the younger girls have made up handshakes with our girls and things like that – so they’ve had a really good time working together.” “I feel like the kids are just learning more,” Spencer contributed. “I feel like none of these kids could’ve played like they are now three days ago, but they’re here now and they’re playing really good – very aggressively; I love it.” The camp also gives the players the opportunity to see each other again before the season – as well as learn more about the coaching side of things. Spencer said that, during team scrimmages, they got to make their own lineups. “I tried multiple things with my
team and it’s cool to figure out new ways to do stuff,” Spencer said. “I would definitely consider coaching — it’s so cool!” “It gives them a chance to have an insight into what we’re looking for from them when they’re playing, and sort of why we do what we do,” Jacobsen said, “and it’s always a good chance for them to get to know more people.” Wonderling added of the campers: “They’re willing to do any position you tell them, and it’s fun to see them want to do something different than stick with the old and they’re going out of their comfort zones.” “They’ve very open-minded,” Spencer said of the campers. “They’re here for fun…it reminds us to play for fun, because we’re getting to the age where it’s college and seriousness, we’re trying to win
states… they just play for fun.” Jacobsen said she had a lot of sixth graders coming up who told her they had never played before, and that they’re really excited for the opportunity to try-out this year. “That’s been really nice to hear, that they’ve taken an interest in it, and they now have the opportunity to go play during their sixth, seventh and eighth grade years before they get to high school,” Jacobsen said. “It’s really not only good for them to learn the sport and have fun with it, but it also builds our program.” With the VHSL fall volleyball season around the corner, the summer camp brings the girls and coaches together prior to the season. In addition to making new friends, Wonderling pointed out that the campers can look up to the example of the older Goochland Volleyball players.
“It’s kind of like you look up to someone who’s bigger than you, so it feels good to know that someone’s telling you that you’re doing good,” Wonderling said, adding that when she was their age, she, too, looked up to the varsity players. “It feels good to know that kids actually want to do something that you’re interested in so you guys can share the same thing,” she said. “Last year, being a new coach, we didn’t have as many of our players come and help with the camp – they just didn’t know me yet, so it’s been really nice this year; we’ve got 12 of our players who have come and helped, which has been awesome,” Jacobsen said. “They’re really excited, they’re with each other, remembering why they love what they do and why they play together. It’s really great getting them back into the swing of things…”

Preparedness day will feature event geared to children Contributed report
Are you prepared for a disaster? If not, now’s your chance. On Saturday, Sept. 7,Goochland County will partner with nearby localities to offer the PlanSafe Disaster Preparedness Workshop (formerly known as Survivor Day), an opportunity for citizens to become better prepared for emergency and disaster situations at no cost. “I strongly encourage Goochland residents to take advantage of this free opportunity to prepare for future
disasters,” said Goochland County Administrator John Budesky. “You never know when the next disaster will occur.” Tornado outbreaks threatened the county in 2018 and 2019, and last year Goochland barely dodged Hurricane Florence. The three-hour workshop will be held from 9 a.m. – noon (check-in begins at 8 a.m.) at Goochland Baptist Church, located at 2454 Manakin Road in ManakinSabot. Training will be provided on topics including
Planning and Documents, Household Safety, Active Threat, Food and Water Safety. Participation is for adults and children, 13 or older. This year, for the first time, Goochland will also be providing a children’s program for families that want to participate with children ages 4 -12. This event will include the Fire Safety House, Goochland Sheriff ’s Office Child ID, a “Make Your Own Go Bag” station and the “My Family Communication/Plan/ Tools” station. Each child will
be able to take home their own Go Bag. Each family completing the workshop will receive one free Plan Safe Kit Preparedness Backpack per household. “We are in the middle of hurricane season, and having a plan and the right supplies on hand before an emergency occurs is critical for each family,” said Goochland Fire-Rescue Chief Eddie Ferguson. “Please plan to visit the PlanSafe Disaster Preparedness Workshop on Sept. 7 and allow us to assist
you in the planning process.” Seating is limited for this program and anyone who would like to attend is encouraged to register early. For families with children 13 or older, registration in available online at www. PlanSafe.org. For families with children ages 4 – 12, the registration is a two-part process. First, the household family should register at the same online location as above, www.PlanSafe. org. Secondly, to register for the children’s program, either
call (804) 556-5344 or send an e-mail to amerciez@goochlandva.us. Provide the child’s registration, the same name used for the online registration, the child’s name, age and a contact phone number. “This is a great opportunity to learn more about emergency preparedness,” said Goochland Deputy Emergency Services Coordinator Robin Hillman. “All participants from past annual workshops have stated how helpful and informative the program was for them.”
Food pantry urges gardeners to donate extra produce where populations live more than 10 miles from a supermarket or large grocery store if in a rural area. A lack of public transportation, as well as job opportunities concentrated in low-wage industries with higher rates of unemployment and underemployment, also combine to make hunger in rural areas a unique challenge. Right here in Goochland County, over 2,000 senior citizens, disabled persons, adults, and children face hunger every day, often skipping meals. The only chance to get food is often through food stamps and/or church pantries and non-profit organizations like GoochlandCares. One couple, Jim and Leslie, visit the Food Pantry almost every Thursday. They usually are able to get enough protein and bread for themselves and their three grandchildren who live with them, but Jim gets especially excited over the fresh produce, much of which is donated from local gardens. The fresh produce reminds me of when I was able to raise a garden,” Jim says. “I want to make sure my grandbabies
know how healthy and delicious fresh veggies are. It is also nice to know they were grown right here in Goochland.” The benefits of providing fresh vegetables and fruits to local food pantries are many. Many people want a wellbalanced diet but oftentimes the less nutritious items are cheaper, have a longer shelf life, and can be stretched over multiple meals. For families who live in poverty, the three most requested items are dairy products, lean meats, and fresh fruits & vegetables. All are often unavailable at food pantries. One of the challenges facing the GoochlandCares Food Pantry every week is providing nearly 300 families with fresh and nutritious produce. “Healthier diets can mean fewer trips to the doctor and contribute to overall well-being,” said Sally Graham, executive director of GoochlandCares. “Our vision is to provide access to the highest quality of services for our clients that is possible. That includes fresh produce and healthy food options in the Food Pantry.”
The GoochlandCares Food Pantry makes every effort to provide clients with the most nutritious food possible by working with local community partners and farms as well as Goochland neighbors. The Food Pantry at GoochlandCares accepts donations of fresh produce plus backyard eggs, non-perishable food items, and household products like toilet paper and children’s diapers. Receiving hours for food donations are
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays; and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays. Contact Terry Lynn Ebright at (804) 556-6260 or at tebright@goochlandcares. org for additional information about GoochlandCares Food Pantry and other local Goochland food pantries. GoochlandCares is a private, 501(c)(3), non-profit corporation that provides access to health care and basic human
services to Goochland residents in need. GoochlandCares envisions a community where everyone’s basic human needs are met. For more information visit www.GoochlandCares. org or contact Adair Roper, aroper@GoochlandCares.org., Anyone interested in donating is also urged to check Facebook at www.facebook. com/GoochlandCares every week for the list of most needed food items for the Food Pantry.

Contributed report
As gardens all over Goochland continue to bring forth a bounty of fresh, delicious, and healthy food, local home gardeners often end up more vegetables and fruit than they can use. What to do with all those cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, beans, peas, okra, and melons? There are always family members and neighbors to give to, and if time, canning or freezing. However, there is yet another alternative: donating surplus produce to the GoochlandCares Food Pantry or other local food pantries. According to the hunger relief organization Feeding America, 2.4 million rural households face hunger throughout the country. Those who live in rural areas often face hunger at higher rates, partly because of unique challenges of living remotely. One of these challenges is an increased likelihood of food deserts, with the nearest food resource potentially hours away. The Federation of Virginia Food Banks considers Western Goochland County to be a “food desert” -- an area
