A local nonprofit focused on caring for Goochland’s feral cat population is kicking off its first-ever fundraising campaign, seeking to raise $25,000 to help support the group’s continued efforts. Money raised will be used to provide care for approximately 500 cats in Goochland, helping to meet the need for medical care, food, shelter and spaying/ neutering services. Founded in 2014, Goochland Community Cats (GCC) has so far helped hundreds of feral cats located in colonies throughout the county. The goal, members explain, is to trap, neuter and release (TNR) as many cats as they can, and also to provide veterinary care and rabies shots when needed. The work is difficult and time-consuming, but members of GCC say they feel they owe it to the animals to do whatever they can. Shrimp festival continued from >1 moving and shaking, the band quickly had nearly everyone out on the floor. The brewery customers loved it, Waterford remembers, and it served as a reminder of what he feels is the most important thing a musician or and can do: help people have a good time. On Sept. 7, Waterford’s band Bridge will be bringing that good time to the Goochland Recreational Center (2425 Sandy Hook Road) for the second annual Community Shrimp Festival. The event, sponsored by the Women’s Ministry of the Fauquier Baptist Church, is once again expected to offer food, fellowship and fun for attendees of all ages. To Waterford, who grew
up playing music in Indiana, the festival offers the chance to connect with an audience and provide attendees with the kind of experience they won’t soon forget. “We try to bring something more than just a band,” said Weatherford. “The best thing is when somebody leaves saying ‘Man, I really had a good time — they played my song!’” The Community Shrimp Festival will be held from noon until 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, and the cost for the meal is $12 in advance until Aug. 30. Tickets must be presented in order to get a meal, and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and tents. County summer interns honored for hard work Contributed report
On Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019 the Goochland County Board of Supervisors recognized the county’s 2019 Summer Interns, all of whom have spent the last several months assisting in various capacities around the county. This year’s interns included: Makaila Pryor, a rising senior at Goochland High School and a participant in the Reynolds Advance College Academies. In addition, she participates in Partnership for the Future (PFF), a nonprofit which helps motivated high school students transition from high school to college and employment. PFF works with students year-round offering coaching and development activities during the academic year and work internships and life skills training during the summer. Makaila intends to graduate with an advanced diploma and an Associate’s degree. After high school she plans to pursue a degree in marine biology. She spent this summer assisting in the areas County Administration, Parks and Recreation, Financial Services, and on various other projects. In addition, she
spent time shadowing Animal Protection and the Assessor’s Office. Demond Morris, a rising senior at Goochland High School and a participant in the Blue Ridge Virtual Governor’s School. In addition, he participates in the Goochland High School robotics team, The Junkyard Dogs and the Forensics Team. He is also an active member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society, Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society, and the National Society of High School Scholars. Demond intends to graduate with an advanced diploma. After high school he plans to pursue a degree in law and government. He spent this summer assisting County Administration and Community Development. In addition, he got a close look at Goochland operations by shadowing County Administration, Animal Protection, the Assessor’s Office, Goochland Health Department, Utilities, and many other departments. Wesley Morgan, a rising second year law student at the University of Richmond. He
earned a Bachelor of Arts from Virginia Tech in both political science and history. He has also earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Wes has been a wonderful addition to the County Attorney’s office this summer contributing valuable research ranging from construction law to election law, and many areas in between. Wes attended staff meetings and Board of Supervisors meetings, including one that lasted well past midnight, giving him a well-rounded local government experience. Wes said that his internship in Goochland provided learning opportunities far beyond the land use arena that he expected to encounter and gave him a great appreciation for the myriad different legal issues and specialties encountered daily by local government attorneys. Wes plans to practice real estate law after graduation. Jack Williamson, a rising senior at Goochland High School, currently interning in IT and helping with the county’s Fiscal Year 2020 computer refresh project and anything else that he can help with. He hopes to attend Virginia Tech or George Mason University to study Computer Science.

What’s in a name? Sometimes, a major headache By Roslyn Ryan Editor
If, like me, you happen to be a fan of the weekly podcast Freakonomics— a popular show that explores the often hidden side of our modern world -- you may have caught the recent episode that examined how a person’s name at birth impacts the level of success they are able to achieve in adulthood. The good news for people whose parents saddled them with particularly odd names is that there is plenty of research to suggest that a person’s name does not typically have much to do with how far they go in life. However, while this is all well and good, I got to thinking the other day about the opposite of this title tribulation, those who were given perfectly innocent birth names that
were later rendered problematic. Fortunately for the Italian admiral Andrea Doria, he had already been dead for a few centuries by 1956, the year the ocean liner that bore his name was involved in one of history’s most infamous maritime disasters. Likewise for the President of Germany from 19251934, Paul von Hindenburg, whose name is now associated almost exclusively with the fiery disaster in 1937 that marked the end of airship travel for good (Hindenburg died in 1934). For some historic headliners however, like 31st president Herbert Hoover, being alive to see one’s name ruefully repurposed was simply a sad reality. Hoover probably had bigger problems in 1929 than the Depression-era shantytowns dubbed “Hoovervilles,” but I’m betting the name still stung. Some people just can’t seem to
win either way: Shunted into the category of “No good deed goes unpunished” are those who find themselves inextricably linked with a problem they valiantly tried to solve, among them the hardworking scientists whose groundbreaking research was rewarded by having the terrible diseases they discovered bear their names forevermore. If you need to find a silver lining, at least those great minds had the satisfaction of impacting mankind for the better in many cases. Not exactly the case for the son of an early 20th century car company founder, who had the dubious honor of having one of the biggest flops in the history of American automobile production named after him. Of course, if Edsel Ford was displeased with the hand fate dealt him, there was probably one man who might have been happy to
trade places with him: General Henry Shrapnel, the 19th century British general whose name will forever be associated with traumatic injury and death. There have been plenty of cases throughout history of people who perhaps didn’t deserve the somewhat distasteful connotations that would be forever linked with their names —Civil War Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker among them — and yet there also are a few who could be said to have brought a degree of moniker misfortune upon themselves, or at least on the ones they loved. It was right around 50 years ago this month, in fact, that celebrated meteorologist John Hope agreed to allow his daughter’s name to be added to the 1969 list of possible hurricane names. The young lady’s name? Camille.
For Ford, life has been one adventure after another By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
This is a story about an amazing woman named Bette Ford. No, not the one who was married to President Gerald Ford and spelled her name in a more traditional fashion, but the one who left
a modeling career in New York City in favor of the dust and danger of a bullring in Mexico. To describe Bette’s childhood as humble would be a huge understatement. Born Harriet Elizabeth Dingeldein in Pennsylvania, Ford and her brother were abandoned by

White has not been at all treated fairly during sheriff’s race Dear Editor, I have been reading the letters that citizens have been submitting on behalf of their desired candidate for Sheriff. I have also been hearing quite a few rumors about one candidate in particular, that candidate being Levin White. While hearing all these rumors, from supporters of another candidate, I began to wonder who this person is that could have done all these crazy things. So, I decided to do my own research on Mr. White. I reviewed all the information I could find, from his campaign website and social media page to his impressive professional career. After reviewing all of the available information, I have come to the following conclusion: Levin White has a transparent and verifiable record of distinguished service to the citizens of the Commonwealth. It has become apparent that Mr. White and his family have been drug through the mud by members of the community that support another candidate to include allegations of bankruptcy, sexual misconduct, illegal misconduct and anything else they can infer that Levin White may have done in his 29 years as a law enforcement officer. Dear Editor, I am writing this letter in support of Sgt. Steven Creasey to be the next sheriff of Goochland County. As a Richmond City Deputy Chief of Police, I supervised patrolmen for many years and understand the importance of having this experience if seeking the office of Goochland County Sheriff. Knowing that Sgt. Creasey has hands-
on experience and knowledge of many areas within the department gives me comfort in knowing that he above all candidates knows the inner workings and operations of the sheriff’s department. This comes from almost 25 years of consistent and stable work history within the county. His education, the list of training courses attended, and the internal courses he leads are very impressive. I have served in the US Navy, been a major in the City of Richmond, held the position of Director of Nuclear and Physical Security for Virginia Power, have been a private investigator, and ended my career as the Virginia Defense Force Lt. Colonel Provost Marshall. I feel promotion from within is important and the fact that Sgt. Creasey has the admiration and support of the current sheriff and outgoing administration speaks volumes. He has the respect and endorsements of county leadership, surrounding counties’ sheriff’s offices, was born and
border in Texas. After attending a bullfight, Ford became enamored with the sport, the spectacle and ritual aspects of the event and the romantic thrill of the ring. She returned to New York, but her heart remained in the cruel reality of the ring. Eventually, she packed up and pursued a career as a bullfighter. There were other women in the ring at the time, but female competitors faced blatant discrimination and exclusion among traditional matadors. Eventually, Ford earned her way to the biggest arenas and even fought in the famed Plaza Mexico, the largest bull ring in the world. MGM made a movie about her bullfighting career called “Beauty and the Bull.” The movie illustrated Ford’s
dedication to the sport, and her willingness to endure the dangers of the ring, gored on several occasions and roughed up even more. After a successful career in the ring in Mexico and the Philippines, Ford returned to the United States where she met and married John Meston, co-founder of the series “Gunsmoke.” Ford resumed her acting career, appearing in a number of television series over the last four decades. By all accounts, Ford is a renaissance woman, a successful female who overcame the greatest of obstacles to obtain the career she envisioned, not one dictated by others. And what a story. There aren’t many who list professions as singer, actor, producer
cious, slanderous, unethical and simply not true. If any of it were true, the background investigations mentioned above would have prevented Mr. White from serving in the law enforcement community. My husband at the time had just gotten a new mobile number and I had not memorized it yet, so I couldn’t tell Sgt. Creasey how to reach him. In a calm and reassuring manner he told me that he would get in touch with my family and would try to reach my father, who was recovering from losing a leg and I was afraid would hurt himself trying to get out to his truck. Once again Sgt. Creasey said in a compassionate and understanding way, “Don’t worry Annette, I will get in touch with your family. It will be OK.” At the same time, Eddie Ferguson was the man I trusted most to tell my kids how much I loved them just in case I never got to tell them again. Creasey and Chief Ferguson presented themselves in a manner that anyone could have that instant comfort with them handling such delicate situations. I will never be able to repay them for what they gave me in a very scary moment of my life and I dare say are probably two of the most selflessness men I know. They have given everything they have to give to the community and that is what makes them good at what they do and well-respected. Though I did not have a part in getting Eddie Ferguson appointed as Goochland’s next Fire Chief, I am grateful for the decision that was made to put him in that position and I ask that you join me in voting on Nov. 5 for Steven Creasey to be Goochland County’s next Sheriff. Tradition
Matthew 15:3 And He answered and said to them, “Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?” People tend toward traditions. Sometimes they are harmless, sometimes not. The tradition of denominations (hundreds of different doctrined and named churches) versus the one Jesus built (Matt 16:18); the tradition of salvation by mental-faith alone versus salvation after belief and baptism (Mark 16:16); the tradition of occasional communion versus the Lord’s Supper every Sunday (Acts 20:7) deserve re-examination. May we examine tradition in the light of Scripture.

For those who have been searching for a way to get active in a fun and manageable way, an upcoming 8k training team might be just the ticket. As team head coach NakonSavon Lucy explained, the eight-week Goochland/ Allianz Partners 8k training team beginning Sept. 21 will offer both support and encouragement for those who are just beginning their fitness journey. “Our training team starts our participants out with one mile,” Lucy explained. “This first run/walk as a team is very encouraging and motivating. The coaches will work with you to increase the mileage each week at a gradual and comfortable pace. We’re focused on walkers, joggers, fast runners, and anyone else who is looking for a fun and social way to move toward a healthier lifestyle.” Lucy insists she knows it can be daunting to get started
when you haven’t run before, or if it’s been a while since you did. “In the spring of 2008, I started walking and tried to run and couldn’t even run half a mile,” Lucy said. “Later, I signed up for the Sports Backers training team. I ran two miles after three weeks of training. “ Training for the 8k will start at 8:30 a.m., on Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Goochland YMCA (1800 Dickinson Road). Participants do not need to be a member of the YMCA, and non-YMCA members will receive a Guest Pass for eight free YMCA visits during training. Those who take part in the training team will also receive: An 8 week training program with a detailed written schedule. Personal guidance from a team of experienced coaches. Organized and supported Saturday group runs. A Sports Backers 8k Training Team shirt. Teams built around experience and ability, so
you’re training with others of similar pace. A 2019 Allianz Partners 8k entry and all associated race benefits. An Allianz Partners 8k participant shirt. Access to clinics on shoes and running attire and what to expect on race day. Child care provided every Saturday during training by the Goochland Family YMCA To register for the 8k training online: https://www. sportsbackers.org/trainingteam/sports-backers-8k-training-team/ There are paper registration copies at the Goochland Family YMCA as well. Those who make $25,000 or less annually or receive proven TANF, Food Stamp, or Energy Assistance Benefits from Social Services are eligible for a special $10 rate for the 8k Training Team. Rogerson sisters find joy, success in triathlons Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor
MAIDENS – As the winner of last year’s USA Triathlon (USAT) Youth & Junior Championships national title in her age division, Andrea Rogerson was expecting to start first this year in the Age 11 female division. Previously, each age group was led by the top 5 triathletes from the previous year’s race, so Andrea’s strategy was to focus on the 12-year-olds ahead of her and try to catch up with the fastest girl in the Age 12 group. That all changed shortly before the race. At packet pickup, the Rogersons learned that starting order this year had instead been randomized, and Andrea, whom they found out was instead starting third-to-last, now had to pass 43 other competitors in order to defend her title. She already had the challenge of facing mainly older competition – although Andrea is 10, the triathlon competitors race the age that they’ll be on Dec. 31, and Andrea’s birthday is Dec. 16 – and now she was faced with the task of completely re-envisioning her race strategy, which she and her family had been working on for months. She responded by passing several competitors in the opening swimming segment with an age-group best time of 2:59… …zooming out to a blistering average pace of 19.57 miles per hour in the cycling stretch… …and then averaging 6:55 min/ mile in the running stretch to overcome the odds and repeat as national champion in resilient fashion with a winning time of 32:29. Andrea, the youngest of three, has not been alone in her successes. Both of her sisters Annika and Anneliese have also excelled on the swimming and triathlon circuits. Fifteen-year-old Anneliese – who as a freshman this past winter won a regional swimming championship in the 100 breaststroke and also earned third-place finishes at the VHSL Class 2 state swim meet for Goochland High School – joined her sister in

earning a podium finish by capturing second in the Age 15 female division at the USAT youth nationals, which were held Aug. 3-4 in West Chester, Ohio. Like her younger sister Andrea, Anneliese – the oldest of the three earned the top swim time in her age group. She averaged a biking pace of 20.51 MPH. Anneliese said she had to work really hard this summer because, in May, she competed in the East Coast Triathlon Festival (ECTF), and she said she didn’t do as well as she wanted to do. “I decided I was going to make a change, and so the entire summer I worked very, very hard,” Anneliese said, “and then at nationals, it felt like I had a breakthrough – it felt really good.” While Annika, 12, didn’t reach the podium at nationals, she experienced
a different kind of victory. In the cycling stretch of the triathlon she endured a bike crash in the first turn, sustaining a bloody and swollen elbow and also dropping a chain that she had to change all by herself. Her brake also shifted over and got stuck onto the wheel for the remainder of the stretch. But Annika – persevering through not just the final five miles of cycling with a hairline fracture in her elbow and a hobbled bicycle, but also through the running stretch that followed – finished the entire race. “It meant a lot,” Annika said, “because I knew that I could have done much better than I did, but I did the best that I could…I’m really happy that I was able to finish in the national championships and I didn’t just stop and I just kept going.” Her family – who didn’t know she had crashed and gotten hurt until
seeing her in the medical tent after the race – was proud of her efforts. “It makes her a champion that she got up after she fell on the bike and she kept going,” Anneliese said of Annika. “I was really proud of her for that.”
Trio’s triathlon journey begins The Rogerson family’s first triathlon event was the Power Kids Triathlon on May 21, 2016 at the Shady Grove YMCA. Because of that day’s torrential rainstorm, the competitors only took on the running and swimming stretches, but the girls not only powered through the heavy rain – they really enjoyed the experience, and they learned a lot about how people take triathlons really seriously. All three also did well in their age groups – Andrea took second, Annika was sixth and Anneliese placed third.
“I was so surprised,” Anneliese said of getting her first triathlon podium finish. “I was just watching the awards because we had finished the triathlon and I heard my name and I was so happy...That’s when I knew that I wanted to be a triathlete.” The girls went on to participate in two other youth triathlons in the summer of 2016 - the REV3 Summer Sizzling triathlon on July 21 and the Virginia Home for Boys and Girls Youth (VHBG) triathlon put on by Endorphin Fitness on Aug. 20 - and after their summer triathlon experiences, they joined the Endorphin Fitness Youth triathlon team yearround. The Rogersons first attended an Endorphin Fitness (EF) training camp that was held on a Saturday a few weeks before their first race, and they fell in love with the coaches there. Training year-round, they have cycling, swimming and running practices weekly. Anneliese is on the EF high performance team and does long bike rides on Saturdays. Her coach is Michael Harlow, EF’s head coach and founder; Andrea and Annika’s EF Coaches are Sally Fraser and James Crabb. “They helped us realize that it’s not about getting the trophy or winning the medal,” Annika said of their EF Coaches. “It’s about trying to persevere when you’re really tired and you have pain in your legs and you’re like, ‘I can’t do anymore.’” The Rogersons shared that the program and its coaches teach the girls that nothing is impossible while also emphasizing the importance of hard work in achieving their goals. The family praised head coach Harlow as an amazing coach, complimenting how he’s taught and inspired the girls to believe in themselves and to “Be More and Live Red.” Once a week, Harlow inspires the athletes with inspirational messages he sends out (Anneliese’s favorite is One Rock at a Time) that help them with a variety of elements related to practicing and competing, like how to train better in the heat, and how to create a race plan. see Rogersons> page 10

Rogersons continued from >9 “He tries to motivate people – he’s really good at it,” Anneliese said of Coach Harlow, “and he just always knows how to push people and let them do more than what they think that they’re capable of, and that helps you get better.”
Training as a family This summer, the Rogersons frequented Powhatan State Park with their five bicycles to train together as a family. In 2017, their parents became USA swim coaches to allow them to train together and swim as a family. They created a swim team called “R3,” and together they train the girls and take them to USA swim meets as unattached swimmers. The Rogersons draw inspiration from the Rocky movies – mostly Rocky III, because he lost “the eye of the tiger” and had to get it back, they said – and they will watch the films before any big race. With all the races they take on, the Rogersons will go home and talk about them, reflecting on the things the girls did well while also learning to improve on aspects like mental toughness, staying focused and persisting up until the very end of a race. That was something Annika did recently; learning she had to be careful going around a hairpin turn like the one in which she crashed during nationals, Annika safely navigated that kind of turn in the recent EF VHBG triathlon. All three sisters like a different stretch of the triathlons. For Andrea, it’s the running stretch that closes out the race. For Annika, it’s the swimming – early on, she was the best swimmer of the three sisters, inspiring her siblings to get better. Her parents described
how she’s able to naturally feel the water. And for Anneliese, it’s the biking – at the beginning of when she was with Endorphin Fitness, she said she was in the back, she wasn’t trying very hard, she didn’t really want to be there and she didn’t really want to bike. “Then I just decided that I was going to embrace biking and really, really try very hard to get better,” Anneliese said. Now, she’s leading the group, “and it was all because my teammates motivated me and I decided I didn’t want to be in the back anymore, and now I love biking.”
Swimming to success Anneliese, Annika and Andrea all started swimming around the same time for The Federal Club in 2013 – Andrea was 4, Annika was 6 and Anneliese was 9 – before they joined the Goochland YMCA Manta Rays that year. They’ve been swimming for the Goochland Y ever since. All three sisters continued to set team records this summer with the Manta Rays – coached by Helen Brown – during the Greater Richmond Aquatic League season. Before she defended her USAT Youth Nationals title, Andrea enjoyed a strong showing at the GRAL Champs meet, becoming a triple winner in the varsity 9-10 200 freestyle mixed relay, the senior varsity 50 butterfly and the senior varsity 100 freestyle. She and her teammates Luke Salser, Ryan Johnson and Alex Horst earlier in the season set a new GRAL league record in the mixed 9-10 200 medley relay with a collective time of 2:26.66 in Goochland’s meet against Raintree. “We were all trying to go for it; before we went, we were all trying to pump each other up to try to go as fast as we can,” Andrea said. “Once we got out of the pool, we asked for our times and once we realized that
SPORTS: Youth, High School, College, Recreational, Professional we beat it by three seconds, we all were so happy and we jumped around.” “The Manta Rays – it’s a really good time,” Anneliese said. “Everybody’s a team; they all want the best for you. They’re all very nice.” The sisters have inspired their teammates, several of whom they’ve grown up with in their six years on the team, and the Rogersons have loved supporting the Goochland YMCA, and being a part of the Manta Rays, which will begin their fall-winter season Sept. 3. Also this summer, Andrea qualified for the Virginia Swimming Zone team and represented Virginia Swimming against the neighboring states in the Eastern Zone Championship. Annika has also made the Zone team, achieved top 10 all-time awards and helped her relay team achieve a Virginia state record when she was at NOVA. “We were like: Let’s try and get the record…we all really wanted to get it and we all tried and pushed as hard as we could,” Annika said, “and we got it.” During the school year, the girls contribute to the Goochland School sports teams, as Anneliese continues to compete for Goochland High School Swimming, and Annika will swim for Goochland Middle School this year. On placing at states her freshman year, Anneliese said: “I worked really hard – I was swimming twice a day…and I wanted to get third in states, and everybody believed in me, but at the beginning I didn’t believe in myself, and then I finally learned to believe in myself, and that I believed I could do it, and I did it… Coach (Ed) Boyle helped me learn to believe in myself.” Both Anneliese and Annika – who both said they want to get better at running in triathlons – are on Goochland’s

Goochland cross country teams eye states again Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor

Goochland’s Joey Cornell competed in the North American OCR Championships in Vermont on Aug. 9.
GOOCHLAND – After two strong years that saw the program’s runners reach - and succeed at - the season-ending VHSL state meets, Goochland cross country’s talented runners will look to deliver another successful run in 2019. The girls have made it to States the past two years, improving on their overall position each year and placing fifth in 2018. And with a couple of promising upcoming individuals joining most of the runners who helped the Bulldogs go 7-0, place first in the district, take second in the region and earn fifth at states, the girls are looking strong once again for 2019. Coaches Henry Jones and Andrew Meiller said the girls work well together – and they train hard, especially what-with moving up one VHSL state classification from Class 2 to Class 3 this year. Senior Anna Kate Wirsing, junior Grace Juran and sophomore Emmy Paulin – the latter of whom got injured at the end of last season and could not compete in the postseason meets – are all back, and both
Suzannah Anderson and Hayley Craig are among Goochland’s newcomers to watch, along with David Johnson and Drew Meiller on the boys’ team. The boys are still a young and growing team, continuing to rebuild from the Bulldogs’ run to the state meet two years ago. They’re led by returning juniors Jackson Hoffler and John Williams, both of whom were part of Goochland’s state team in 2017. Joey Cornell, who on Aug. 9 competed in the North American OCR Championships in Vermont, is also among the Bulldogs’ returners going into 2019. Jones and Meiller noted that the boys are working very hard to get Goochland back into States, but the freshmen and sophomores will have to pave the way. The Bulldogs will not only continue to compete against teams in the James River District during the regular season, but they should also see runners from the powerhouse programs of Maggie Walker and George Mason – both of which also made the jump up from Class 2 to Class 3 – in the postseason meets. There has seemed to be more of a commitment from the student-athletes to summer
training, the coaches observed – more kids are running on their own, Meiller noted, and the coaches had their biggest attendance numbers at summer training this year. “We have a very talented group of runners, and we hope for an extremely successful season that results from their hard work and dedication to the sport and to the team,” Meiller said. “We also know that there are many factors that go into how a season turns out.” “Regardless of how the season goes, we are so proud of our athletes,” Meiller added. “Cross Country is a tough sport – mentally and physically – and it takes a special person to work all the way through the season.” Goochland Cross Country is slated to compete in a varsity invitational on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. at Fairview Park (716 W. North St.) in Woodstock. The Bulldogs are also slated to host James River District opponents Bluestone, Buckingham and Randolph-Henry in a meet at Goochland’s Leakes Mill Park on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 4:30 p.m. Additionally, they’re the slated hosts for this year’s James River District varsity championships, which will be held Monday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. at Leakes Mill Park.
Benedictine wins season opener over Trinity 43-10 Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
GOOCHLAND – It was a move that he learned from his teammate. With a Trinity Episcopal defender breaking through the line and reaching out for him, Jay Woolfolk not only eluded the sack, but he took off to his left and – utilizing the spin move he learned from senior running back Stevie Walden – raced 30 yards down the left side and into the end zone for his first touchdown rush of the day. It was one of five touchdowns – including three in the first quarter alone – that Woolfolk engineered in Benedictine Football’s 43-10 victory over Trinity on Saturday. But coming off that win, he emphasized the teammates around him. “I wouldn’t be anywhere without my linemen; I wouldn’t be anywhere without my wide receivers nor running back,” said the junior
quarterback. “When people tell me, ‘Oh yeah, Jay Woolfolk, you did this!’ No, I tell them…‘We did this.’ Without them, it’s no me.” Benedictine’s first scoring drive of the day was aided early by a huge block that Joe Covington threw against a defender that got past the front line to allow his teammate Woolfolk to complete a pass. One of Anthony Fisher’s two interceptions on the day set up the drive capped by Woolfolk’s slippery TD run. And Walden, whom Woolfolk saw use the spin move himself, turned a short pass from Woolfolk into an incendiary 61-yard trip to the house. It was a big effort for Walden after he was out this summer with a knee issue. “To see him come back and score like that – I know that brought joy to him and to me,” Woolfolk said. “I love Stevie – I mean I love all my teammates to death; I would do anything for them.”
“Jay is a really good athlete – very good football player…best of all, he’s a great teammate,” Benedictine coach Greg Lilly said. “I don’t know if he’s better on offense; I don’t know if he’s better on defense – I’m glad we’ve got him, and…he’s a great teammate who wants to make everybody around him better.” Woolfolk’s early short pass to Nick Turner in the end zone and two scoring rushes that saw Woolfolk evade pressure both times helped lift Benedictine out to a 20-0 advantage; Trinity Episcopal fought back, getting on the scoreboard in the second quarter and then pinning Benedictine’s offense deep through much of the third. Trinity also picked up a safety, but saw two drives inside Benedictine’s territory stall out on turnovers on downs. But Gary Seigler made a field goal, and he and his Cadets capped the nearly three-hour game by tacking 20 more points onto the score-
board board in the fourth quarter with the help of Walden’s 61-yard catch-and-run and a scorcher of a 55-yard TD rush from Woolfolk. “Our kids have done a really good job of conditioning, and conditioning in the heat,” Lilly said, “and then when we get a day like this where it’s 79 degrees and breezy, I think for our guys, we could’ve stayed out here and we could’ve played eight quarters today.” Benedictine’s defensive front complemented the secondary’s strong start to the game with a pair of bruising plays inside the final two minutes of the first half. After Frankie Boehling dropped the ball carrier to midfield for a short loss, Nick Neighbors tracked down and brought down the quarterback to push Trinity all the way back to its own 38. Christian Dunn late in the game added a sack of his own, then engineered a fumble to set up a short
drive capped by a 10-yard TD dash up the middle from teammate Henry Dolan. Injuries to Jack Hall, Brian Daughtry and Evan Kerzanet prior to the season kept them from playing in the opener, but the hard work their teammates put in this summer will hopefully help create some depth when the Cadets start getting those players back around the middle-to-end stretch of September, Lilly noted. It was Benedictine’s first time meeting Trinity in the regular season in all 15 of Lilly’s years coaching with the Cadets, if not longer than that. “I think the kids probably knew it was that long, and the kids know each other from place to place,” Lilly said. “It was chippy at times, but both teams played hard – our kids played hard, their kids played hard. It was a good, fun high school football game for these guys to be in.”
