Christmas Mother continued from >1 thought this was such a special program, helping those in our community during Christmas, bringing some of the joy of the season to those in need.” And Hillman and her family also know that joy can be received from serving others. “My first involvement with the Christmas Mother Program was around 1996 or so when I coordinated adopting several families for work,” Hillman recalled. “My son, who was about 7 at the time, helped me make the deliveries to the families. One of the mother’s was so thankful she gave my son a Christmas ornament. We’ve always cherished that ornament. Every year since then, we have hung it on our Christmas tree.” Hillman’s community minded spirit started in high school when she joined Goochland Department of Fire-Rescue and Emergency Services as a volunteer. During her 36 years of volunteer service with Goochland Fire – Rescue, Hillman found her passion for emergency and disaster preparedness. She was instrumental in the establishment of Goochland’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program in 2004 following the impact to Goochland from Hurricane Isabel in 2003. Following the implementation of the CERT program, she received a Certificate of Distinguished Service Award from the Commonwealth of Virginia and Virginia’s Department of Emergency Management. More recently in 2015, she received the Goochland Fire-Rescue Chief’s Award serving as Goochland’s Deputy Emergency Service Coordinator. While finishing her Data Processing degree in 1984, Hillman began her career
at National Card Control, Inc., located at that time on Cardwell Road. Thirty-five years later, she still works for the same company now known as cxLoyalty in Henrico County. Through the years, she has had many roles at the company such as Computer Operator, Programmer, Business Analyst, Data Processing Manager and Contact Center Manager. Of the many hats she has worn, she most enjoys her current role as Senior Director of Global Continuity, Crisis Management and Security Awareness where she can focus on emergency and disaster preparedness from both a local and global perspective. Hillman has also been serving her community as a Rotarian since 2015. She quickly took a leadership role and recently completed a term as their 2018-2019 President. During the district awards ceremony this past July, the Rotary Club of Goochland was recognized by Rotary District 7600 for their service contributions with the Community Service Award and she as President received the Rotary District Governor’s Circle Award. Hillman attributes her ability to serve her community as a very active volunteer to her loving family, all of whom share her desire to help those in need. Hillman and husband Tom live on Route 6 just east of the Courthouse area. Tom is a volunteer Captain at the fire-rescue station in Crozier and is an IT Specialist for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. They have two children, Philip and Kaitlyn. Philip is a fourth-generation firefighter and is a Lieutenant with Spotsylvania County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management. Kaitlyn is a Behavioral Therapist with Dominion Youth Services. Hillman asks that local businesses, schools, churches

ment loan fund to benefit the Richmond Symphony musicians. “The Richmond Symphony League is honored to continue our support for the innovative and engaging outreach programs of the Richmond Symphony,” said RSL board president Alison Eckis, noting that support of music education remains a key focus of the organization. “We want to ensure GCPS students have the same access to music education as is provided in all the other school systems in the region, including access to the Discovery concerts with full orchestra and performances by RSO musicians in the County’s schools.” The evening’s festivities will begin with music as guests have an opportunity to enjoy an open bar and passed appetizers while viewing the large numbers of silent and live auction items. The evening will continue with a cocktail and dessert buffet, followed by jazz and dancing.

HURRY - LIMITED TIME OFFER!
Goochland’s Moore, a National Merit Scholar, settling in at VCU By Roslyn Ryan Editor
As Samuel Moore begins his first year at Virginia Commonwealth University this semester, he will be among the relatively small number of students nationwide to go from MOORE a home school environment to a major university.
Fortunately for Moore, proving himself academically is nothing new. In addition to earning an Associate Degree of Science in Engineering while in high school through a dual enrollment program at Reynolds Community College, Moore was also selected this year as 2019 National Merit Scholar. That designation carried with it a full scholarship to VCU, where Moore plans to major in Mechanical Engineering. He says his long term goal is to work for a company like Lockheed Martin or Boeing.
Moore admits it was a bit of an adjustment to go from being the only student in his class (he does have a younger sister, who is also homeschooled) to sitting in a classroom at Reynolds with his fellow degree seekers, but adds the instructors he has had so far have been “exceptional.” That includes, of course, his mother Eleanor, who has been his teacher since kindergarten. “She put quite a lot into our education,” Moore said of his mother, a former physical therapist. “I admire her so much for all she has done for us.”

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
Next generation is watching race drama unfold be the Devil, although that had not been proven. I’m going to withhold the name of the candidate, and likewise give a proverbial pass to the messenger, because in this case that person had not yet turned 7. And while I am sometimes tempted to laugh at the out-of-the-mouths-of-babes candor of the young political pundit, it also is a reminder that children are always listening. The child, I would suspect, had received the information from his parents and had quickly adopted the views as his own, albeit perhaps in a somewhat transmogrified form. I can only guess at what they
By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Several years ago, during the run-up to the 2016 Presidential Election, someone mentioned to me— quite casually — that one of the candidates could not possibly be allowed to win and that any means necessary should be employed to ensure that they didn’t. The reasons given, if I am remembering them correctly, were as follows: a. The candidate in question had murdered several people. b. The candidate was intent on murdering many more people. c. The candidate might actually
told him, but he clearly took it to heart. It isn’t surprising: While running for elected office has never been an endeavor for the faint of heart, these days it seems to have become something more akin to a blood sport. Likewise, more and more candidates seem to be accompanied by an army of cyber supporters willing to berate, intimidate and coerce on their behalf. Even here in Goochland, concerns have been raised over the tenor of the sheriff’s race and the way the various candidates supporters have behaved toward one another. One woman mentioned the other day that things have
reached such a fever pitch in her circle that longtime friends no longer speak. It does beg the question, what kind of example are we setting for those who will come after us? If boorish behavior, outlandish claims and ad hominem attacks are seen as part and parcel of running for office these days, what is next? How far into the muck are we going to slide? As we continue to approach the election in November, perhaps we would all do well to remember that pettiness and gamesmanship have no place in a community like Goochland. We can, and should, do better.
At 75, iconic ‘Smokey Bear’ has stood the test of time By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
Product mascots have certainly changed over the years, and today’s icons associated with our favorite products bear no resemblance to the ones that first appeared in television ads years ago. Most did not stand the test of time, while a few have remained ingrained in our collective memories. My early memories of televi-
sion and product mascots include a distinctive episode that I found utterly confusing at the time. Our family watched the variety shows of the era like I love Lucy and The Jackie Gleason Show, and television commercials were often live productions associated with the show. The weirdest, to me anyway, was the appearance of a less than four-foot-tall bellhop who belted out “Call for Phillip Morris.” I never could figure exactly why he

Turned out he was, and Johnny Rovantini worked for the tobacco giant for more than 40 years serving as its living trademark in print, radio and television commercials. Letters to the Editor Despite intimidation, White will serve all residents as sheriff Dear Editor: It is said that one can be judged by the company he keeps. Is it also true that a candidate can be judged by his supporters? Steven Creasey is running for Goochland Sheriff. His supporters have threatened his opponent Levin White on many occasions: in person, on the phone, and on facebook. The White family has stated that they don’t go to certain restaurants with their children because they don’t want them to be exposed to the comments and threats. They are worried about school starting and their children being bullied. One Levin White supporter put up 8 approved campaign signs. An hour later, 6 were taken down. Some people with White signs in their yards have been harassed to the point that they have removed them. Another White supporter had threatening phone calls 3 days in a row. That person is now watching his property carefully and keeping all doors locked. This whole process has become very scary! I support Levin White for Sheriff because of his resume. He has experience in all areas of law enforcement all over Virginia. He has worked on human and drug trafficking cases, which our county is now facing. We do have those problems here and they are growing rapidly! Virginia is #6 in human trafficking and there is not a wall around Goochland. Levin White has a 12-Point plan to address these problems and many others in our rapidly growing county. It is no longer Mayberry RFD and he is working hard to show us how he will work to protect us. Levin White will be the sheriff for all Goochlanders, in both the east and the west. If you are a victim of crime or the persee Letters > page 7

Change is what is really needed for county’s District 1 Dear Editor, For the last twelve years, I have resided in Goochland County’s District One. My entire life I have actively followed politics. Before moving to our fine county, I completed a degree in economics, and eventually went on to obtain a master’s in public policy. Local government has always been a top concern, because of the influence on our daily lives. Goochland is not different in the arena of local politics. This year, we are in full swing of another election season. On the ballot are many important races that are currently underway. There is a familiar face running again in District One. Susan Lascolette is seeking re-election for yet another term, even though she campaigned to stop at two. This does not surprise me, because what politician really keeps their promises? Lascolette has been able to accomplish many successes in her tenure. Running as a Tea Party Republican in 2011, she along with other newly elected board supervisors were able to straighten a potential nightmarish situation. Many kudos go out to these individuals; however, they were only doing what every other county in the State already does. Goochland must pay their obligations, maintain a police force, and
provide public school. Even though Lascolette can say she contributed in her eight years, what has she really done? District One has not changed a bit in the last decade. Sure, we have a few more neighbors, and there is a porta potty in the woods next to a playground on Matthews Road. But how has the rest of the county progressed while we still remain in 1992? Some people are privileged enough to have the internet. I am not sure why I am still saying this in our gadget-centric universe. Remember the day of dial-up? Well, that is the latest technology and a reality in District One. Unless the long speculated last mile ISP shows up tomorrow, we are far from having reliable internet service. The one elementary school did connect to the 21st century this past year. A ten-milelong cable was run from the Courthouse area to the school. It was promised that citizens would be able to tie in to get service, because additional money was spent to run a separate line. Volume and distance was not taken into consideration, and the cable lies useless for thousands of residents. When you go vote, remember we still have the same issues that were complained about two terms ago. There is no internet, one half of the county flourishes while the other is left behind, and it still takes upward of thirty minutes for police or EMS. What does a AAA bond rating do for those who die while waiting for police, fire, or ambulance? I am sure it helped fund the capital improvement project of building a new fire station, but what is the point if it did not increase response time? As I see it, the tipping point is in the future, which will be the great divide. Eventually, eastern Goochland will have too many residents and a new high school will be needed to

accommodate growth. For convenience and population needs, a new school will be erected probably somewhere around West Creek. Once this takes place, most of the county will have no reason to travel to the Courthouse area. This issue will further segregate the county, and create an even bigger problem budgeting and allocating funds. I understand Goochland is a rural county, and citizens desire slow growth to keep its pastoral appeal. But just because the internet is available, does not mean Walmart will look to build a store in the middle of Hadensville. The problem is the equality of our inputs. If I give equal tax dollars, then I should have uniform access to EMS, parks, or public utilities. If my experience in District One has taught me anything, if nothing changes, then expect more of the same for another four years. Charles Brown Goochland
Tale of the T-shirt shows why resident supports Creasey Dear Editor, If I may, I want to tell everyone a story. As I pulled my Steven Creasey for Sheriff T-shirt out of the dryer tonight, I recalled the last instance I wore it. A moment I will remember, because it exemplified why I, and many others support this humble man who doesn’t get caught up in the day to day political slander we see on our news feeds. Last Christmas I vowed my support to Steven, but due to some personal conflicts and reasons involving other candidates I have passively lended my support until now. Circuit Court Judge Timothy Sanner entered an Order to establish the Agreed Boundary Line between Goochland and Louisa counties at the joint request of the two counties’ boards of supervisors. The line, unsurveyed since Louisa was formed from Hanover County in 1742, is now established by court order. Voter registrations of local residents, who had been shifted between the two counties in April, are being returned to their home counties, including the registrations of Mrs. Matts and her husband Paul.

A middle aged man approached me and asked, “Are you Mr. Creasey?” I stated, “No, but an avid supporter and career long friend that has served beside him since I was 17 years old. He says, “Thank you for your service, are you a police officer?” I quickly answer “No, but a proud member of Goochland Fire-Rescue.” (Which he did not realize was part of Steven’s resume) As we small talk, he says “I see the support all over, I live in Goochland, but I’ve never met him, what can you tell me about him?” To summarize, I said, aside from his obvious physical and social media campaign, his Sheriff ’s Department

Steven Creasey is a family man, with a legacy and deep roots in Goochland’s growth and public safety. His entire family is engrossed in public service and his late father was a wellrespected Supervisor. He was my first Lieutenant as I began my fire department training in 2007 and has a long standing volunteer resume including making Captain and President of the Board of Directors. He is a lifetime member of Goochland Fire-Rescue and a lifetime public servant of the county he is so passionate to serve. servant. As I’ve aged I’ve been able to count the fewer and fewer men who helped to shape me into the person I am. Steven is one of those people, I literally cannot think of a single negative interaction I have ever had with him. A single time where he did not have positive things to say, positive things to teach you, and positive outcomes to achieve. As the political climate becomes more volatile, I’ve witnessed Steven rise above, non-wavering, keeping his head held high, and has never been baited into the negative banter. That my friends shows the maturity, humbleness, and overall demeanor of the man I expect to be my next Sheriff. I truly believe he gained another supporter that day, and I can’t be more proud than to publicly support: Eric Lehmann Goochland

permission, and one thing is certain, the citizens of Goochland County absolutely love Steven Creasey and want him as their next sheriff. You will not find a more dedicated and faithful employee, friend, father, brother, and husband. While I can appreciate other candidates pursuing the office of sheriff, I would rather back a candidate that does not have a questionable work history or questionable integrity or character. One that often raises more concern and questions rather than positivity. With that being said, there is only one choice and that is to elect Steven Creasey as the next sheriff of Goochland County. Outgoing Sheriff Jim Agnew said best and that is that Sgt. Creasey has an employment history with the county that is unblemished, which is rare to find, and that is the reason why sheriff Agnew is fully endorsing Steven Creasey. The Sheriff trusts Steven, his Major supports Steven, the whole department has faith in him and stands behind him. Why shouldn’t we? Please join me in voting on Nov. 5 for Steven Creasey to be the next sheriff of Goochland County.

White has the right experience to lead our sheriff’s office
Dear Editor, When I need work done on my car, I go to my friends and check with them to see what mechanic they would recommend that I use. The same thing holds true of the sheriff’s race here in Goochland. In my working career, I had the good fortune of working with several law enforcement investigators, and so I went to my friends to ask them about Levin White. These investigators highly recommended him for sheriff. I also did my own research and I found that he loves his family, he loves his country and this county of Goochland and I like his platform. For your information, here are his credentials: (1) Recruit on Feb. 16, 1990 (2) Police Officer 1 effective Sept. 1990 (3) Police Officer 11 effective July 1995 (4) Police Officer 111 effective Sept. 1997 (5) Police Officer 1V effective Sept. 2000 (6) Police Officer V effective Sept. 2002 (7) Training Division Feb. 1990 to Aug. 1990 (8) Street Enforcement Mark Plummer Sept. 1990 to June 1991 Sandy Hook
Smokey continued from >6 at some ad agency conference table, but was inspired by actual events. When Forest Service workers arrived at a fire in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico, they discovered a badly burned three-monthold bear cub. New Mexico game warden Ray Bell and his wife nursed the cub back to health. They named him Hotfoot Teddy.
The small recovering cub captured the emotions of a nation, and Forest Service officials quickly realized the value the cub could provide as a spokesman of sorts for fire prevention. Renamed Smokey, the bear was flown to the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., where thousands flocked to see the national icon. Throughout the decades, the Smokey we associate with forest fire safety has undergone major transformations, but his

Goochland volleyball opens 2019 season 2-0 Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
GOOCHLAND — Trinity Wonderling said she always thinks about everything before the play occurs – she’s thinking what she’ll do if the situation is this or that before putting it to play – and she plans out what she’ll do based on who she has around her. With the first set all knotted up at a nail biting-score of 24-even between Wonderling’s Goochland Bulldogs and visiting Fluvanna, the situation proved right for the senior setter to pull off a favorite move. The ball came to her and she made to set it high… …but instead of pushing it directly skyward for one of her attackers to try and hammer over the net, she did what had already gotten her team a point earlier in the set. She arched the ball over the net herself with the surprise setter dump attack. “When they’re not ready, you can tell, and then you just dump it. It gives them something to be on their toes about,” Wonderling said, “and most people usually aren’t on their toes.” Fluvanna didn’t get to the attack in time. Wonderling’s disguised kill set up match point. Goochland Volleyball would win the tightly contested first set 26-24 before pulling away to blank the Flying Flucos 3-0 on Thursday and open the season on a pair of match victories. Wonderling did a little bit of everything for the Bulldogs on Thursday, and she did all those things well. She went low to keep points alive. She rose to the net for blocks. She gave her team another attack option on the third touch, making 5 kills. And then she set the ball well on the second touch with 8 assists while mixing in a couple of key dump attacks to catch the visitors off-guard. “She’s always a key player for us; she does it all,” Goochland coach Rachel Jacobsen said of Wonderling. “Hitting is newer, but she’s really sort of come into it. That was one of those things –

she did it randomly in practice, I was like: ‘You’re gonna keep doing that!’ She’s picked it up, she’s taking it in stride and she’s a really good leader on the court.” Goochland clawed back from a 22-18 first-set deficit to take a narrow lead before Fluvanna tied the match at 24-all. After Wonderling’s timely setter dump pushed her team into the lead, the Bulldogs grabbed the 1-0 advantage on a 26-24 triumph when Fluvanna hit away Goochland’s serve. “These girls do a really good job of keeping focused and, when things start going wrong, just centering back in, taking that deep breath and just moving on to the next point,” Jacobsen said. “We’ve been working on that.” The visitors rallied in Set 2 to tie the match at 19-all, but a 6-1 closing stretch lifted the Bulldogs ahead 2-0;
Goochland then took command in the third and final set to win going away, 25-11. “It was the energy, definitely,” Wonderling said, adding: “Communication is probably one of the biggest things in volleyball, and being able to communicate with your team and have fun while doing it is like the best feeling.” For Goochland, Mary King was a strong blocking and attacking force up the middle, making 7 kills and 4 blocks. and Taylor Michaels was able to effective slam the ball across the court; she delivered 6 kills and forced the visitors into hitting errors. Ilaria Russell, Ellie Spencer and Michaels were among the lockdown defenders in the back, with Spencer racking up 20 digs. “Everyone played their part, and
it was amazing to see everyone come together,” Wonderling said. “Today we were so tight; it felt good to be together and have people support us.” Goochland is off to a 2-0 start following its victory over Fluvanna. On Tuesday in their season opener, the Bulldogs handled Buckingham 3-0 (25-16, 25-21 and 25-11). In the opener, King delivered 9 kills and 3 blocks, Rachel Carter had 4 kills, Wonderling made 12 assists and 4 kills and Spencer had 22 digs. The Bulldogs (2-0 after Aug. 29) will re-match Fluvanna on the road on Thursday, Sept. 5 (6:30 p.m.) before playing at Prince Edward on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. and returning home to host Nottoway on Thursday, Sept. After a long hot summer, local Goochland food pantry shelves are bare again. September is Hunger Action Month. As Goochland gears up for the new school year and the return of cooler temperatures, we need you to take action to fight hunger in your community. Hunger Action Month is an opportunity to join a nationwide movement that has a real and lasting impact. Goochland food pantries need your help to feed over 2,000 residents who struggle with hunger every day. Whether by advocating to raise awareness, making donations, or volunteering, you can make a difference during Hunger Action Month and every month to help Goochland neighbors in need. Together, we can solve hunger in our community. Everyone at any age can easily participate. Choose an activity from the “Take Action” list below. Urge your friends, family, neighborhood, class, church group, civic group, or even your employees and customers to become involved. Drop off food donations at your local food pantry or at collection boxes (nonperishable items only) at key locations throughout the county including Essex Bank,
EZ Ship (next to Food Lion on Fairground Road), and Goochland Family YMCA. Here are several ways you can take action to help solve hunger in your community: Join Goochland Cares For Brews For Birds on Sept. 12, at Kindred Spirit Brewing in West Creek.
