Goochland resident Emiel Fisher has announced that he is ending his campaign to be the county’s next sheriff. Fisher, the founder of protective services firm Rapid Deployment & Protection Worldwide, made the announcement during a candidates’ forum hosted by the Goochland Republican Women on Sept. 5. “I want to thank my numerous supporters and backers and would ask that they now back Levin White for Sheriff,” Fisher said in an e-mail on Monday. White, a career law enforcement officer, and current Goochland County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Steven Creasey are both vying to succeed longtime county sheriff Jim Agnew, who will retire at the end of this year. “I have endorsed Levin and know the people of Goochland will prosper under his law enforcement leadership,” Fisher said. “I look forward to working with Levin in the future to this end. God bless the people of Goochland, and Godspeed.”

Holy Cow! And racing pigs and 4-H Livestock Shows, carnival rides, heritage crafts, lawn mower, tractor and truck pulls, historic buildings, antique buildings, historic reenactments, children’s activities and so much more! The 28th annual Field Day of the Past is geared up and ready to go from Sept. 20-22. This year’s show will bring back many of the favorite activities and attractions and we’ll mix in some new ones – a Revolutionary War Re-enactment, Buffalo Will and Pawnee Bill and their 1924 Huppmobile, broom making and the Virginia Storytelling Classic to mention a few. Visitors can see ham smoking, sorghum molasses mak-

ing, a steam operated sawmill in operation and diesel engines in motion. Historic re-enactments present Civil War life, Revolutionary War demonstrations, colonial woodworking and tinsmithing, primitive survival skills and photographic trends over more than a century. A Turn of A Century traces the changes made in the years around the turn of the 20th century. Tractor pulls, truck pulls, lawnmower pulls and even pedal tractor pulls engage crowds of every age and give everyone an equal opportunity to compete and show off their pulling abilities. 4-H Livestock shows allow young contestants to showcase the beef and dairy cows, swine, sheep, goat, rabbit and poultry they have raised.

Arts and Crafts vendors ply their goods and one can find home made furniture, hand sewn crafts, antiques, bricbrac, clothing, jams and jellies and a plethora of other items. Wandering through the antique vehicles, motorcycles, tractors and small engines one can trace the history of the evolution of machinery, farming and lifestyles over the past century. Grab a hunk of cheese and a Coke in a bottle at the Short Pump Grocery, see the Short Pump Garage as it was in past century, sing along with the music at Springfield Baptist Church, send a letter from the Field Day of the Past Post Office in an envelope bearing see Field Day > 8

The congregation of Bethel United Methodist may be small, Rev. John Hall, pastor, said, but its members are dedicated to serving both the community and the wider world.

Bethel continued from >1 and the wider world. “Some may view Bethel United Methodist as a small congregation, but through its missional efforts, it continues to provide significant support to the Goochland community, and beyond through its connectional relationship with other worldwide United Methodist Churches,” Hall explained. Built in 1834, the original one-room building also served as a school during the week. The present-day sanc-

tuary seats around 175 people, and the sanctuary, fellowship hall, and kitchen have been renovated within the past two years. Bethel will celebrate its most recent milestone at 11 a.m. this Sunday, Sept. 15, welcoming guest speaker Wallace Sterling, a previous long-time Bethel member who now resides in Matthews County, and his wife Mary Lou. Wallace spent his career teaching in Goochland public schools and in correctional education for over 30 years, and was also a former member of the Goochland School

Board for over eight years. Mary Lou, as a registered nurse, worked as a public health nurse for Goochland County. Following the worship service, a covered-dish picnic luncheon will be served on the grounds and the fellowship hall. Learning victims’ stories remains heartbreaking, but necessary, way to keep 911 memories alive By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Of all the wonders that technology has laid at our collective doorstep over the past several decades, the internet remains — at least in this writer’s humble opinion — the biggest game-changer of them all. And while the World Wide Web certainly has its down side, during this particular week —the week we pause to remember the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 -- it offers what some may find to be a deeply moving way of understanding just what was lost on that horrific day.

Taken as a whole, the number of people killed on Sept. 11, 2001 — believed to be 2,977 — is nearly incomprehensible. But a quick web search reveals a full list of the names of those lost, and from there it is only a few more clicks to find the story of who each person was. To read through them is to be hit, again and again, by the fact that every one of the victims had families, and dreams, and a story that should not have ended that day. Each and every one left an unfillable void. As always, time moves forward. Life goes on. And while Ground

Zero remains a hallowed place, as does the field in Pennsylvania where the passengers and crew of Flight 93 perished, the children born in 2001 are almost all officially adults now. What on Earth do we tell them about that day? I’ve been wondering about this for awhile, but have never come up with a very good answer. Is there a way that you can communicate what it feels like to watch the world as you know it heave and collapse? What metaphor can stand in for an anguish that washes over an entire nation? Do we mention that amid the hor-

ror there were glimmers of good, most notably the way people from all walks of life dropped everything to help total strangers because suddenly their fellow Americans felt much less like strangers than they did the day before? Sadly, even after all these years, I don’t really know how to tell this story. So year after year, right around this time, I almost always go back to the list and search the names. I hope you will try it. I promise it will break your heart. But it also will ensure they are never forgotten.

Not so pretty: When great vision isn’t perfect By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

As I prepare for my second cataract surgery in as many weeks, I think I’m prepared to offer some less distorted views of seeing the world in a different light. First, let me alleviate any preconceived notions you might have regarding eye surgery. It’s not what you think, and my fears quickly disappeared once the procedure

began. Skilled professionals make the process easy and painless, and no one would argue with the amazing results they achieve on a daily basis. The first operation was more than eye-opening, and provided a new view of a world of vivid color and detail that I had almost forgotten existed. The advantages of new vision are almost infinite, but I must admit there is a downside to restored and

The mirror also provided a subtle surprise, and the wrinkles hidden for months all became clearly visible — and all at once. I found out suddenly where all those years had gone. Honestly, it appears everyone

around me has aged with my new heightened eyesight, a reality that would have better remained masked by the defective lenses. Letters to the Editor In contentious race, White is best choice for Goochland sheriff Dear Editor, Will Goochland ever recover from this Sheriff’s race? I don’t think so. People who have been friends for years are no longer speaking. The same goes for families. The Goochland Republican Party (GRP) is split due to GRP’s “leadership” blindly supporting Creasey even though Creasey is running as an Independent candidate and NOT a Republican. Apparently, GRP “leadership” was laboring under the mistaken belief and opinion that the rest of the Republicans should get in lockstep with “leadership” and fall in line behind them to support Creasey. This is not happening. Never have I seen such vile venom spewed against anyone in an election, as has been done with Levin White, without first checking the facts and nothing has been done to calm the waters so the Creasey campaign must condone the behavior. To give you a little history, this all started on May 15 at the Republican Mass Meeting at Central High School Building when Creasey supporters packed the auditorium with their red “Creasey” shirts. The purpose of the Mass Meeting was “for nominating and/or endorsing candidates for Goochland county for the Nov. 5 general election.” Creasey did not want the Republican Party nomination but opted to seek an “endorsement” to allow him to continue to run as an Independent candidate even though there was a Republican, Emiel Fisher, who was seeking to be the Republican Party “nominee.” Furthering the agenda of the Independent candidate, Creasey, over the Republican candidate, Fisher, the 7th District Republican see Letters > page 7

ting in my living room for two years. I finally read the manual on my new camera, and read a book my son gave me for Christmas two years ago. And no one had to move when I figured the baking

Letters continued from >6 Committee Chairman, Ben Slone, upstaged the event before it even started by making a motion, improperly made but not objected to by the local committee chairman, “to move the order of voting and to change the agenda.” Slone’s maneuver was designed to railroad the meeting to ensure Creasey’s endorsement at the beginning of the meeting as opposed to where it was on the agenda, last. When the endorsement for Creasey was done, the younger crowd all left, not bothering to listen to the other candidates. They had done what they came to do. So, the Republican Mass Meeting left NO Republican candidate for sheriff but provided us with THREE Independent candidates due to the Republican “leadership” and Ben Slone comandeering the meeting to do the bidding of an avowed Independent, Creasey. The role of true political leadership is to work to get members of their party into office. In this case, the Goochland Republican Party is chock-full of RINOS (Republican In Name Only) as proven by their undying loyalty in supporting an Independent candidate at the expense of “bulldozing” a Republican who was the only candidate having filed for the nomina-

tion for sheriff and who actually wanted it. I understand the Virginia Republican Party is looking into how the meeting was handled. We will see what happens. Two candidate forums have come and gone. One forum was sponsored by the Goochland Democratic Party. The other forum was sponsored by the Goochland Republican Women (GRW). Creasey refused to appear at either forum although the other two candidates for sheriff did and answered the questions they were asked. What’s most concerning is that Creasey’s refusal to appear at the GRW forum is a slap in the face to Republicans but wait, he’s running as an Independent, so there’s your answer. I want my next sheriff to be able to stand up and answer questions put to him by citizens. I want to be able to hear what each candidate has to say and how he says in relation to the other two candidates. We deserve at least that. In Agnew’s support of Creasey, is Agnew afraid that some of the murders still unsolved in Goochland may be reopened and errors made by his office would come to light? Is that why he is so adamant that Creasey be his successor because he knows with Creasey that will never happen? I speak of the Weigelhofer of Busy Bee Realty murder which happened in August of 2003, 16 years ago; Waverly

“Wade” Sharpe, Jr. who disappeared in August of 1997; Billy Maxwell only 17 hears old and found with traumatic head injuries lying in the middle of Broad Street Road in Maidens; the death of Frederick “Fritz” Lewis Daniel Hoffman who was visiting his friend, Clay Parrish, for the weekend and winds up being killed on Jackson Shop Road. No DNA on the steering wheel to determine who was driving when he was killed, according to Sheriff Agnew, although news releases say,” the driver of the vehicle was treated and released from the hospital”; A. Lynn Brooking, March 1, 2015 “beaten to a pulp” Ned Creasey told me, yet no DNA was found; Richard Hamm of Sandy Hook, murdered September 1, 2017, no one charged as yet. My question to you is, how safe do you feel living in Goochland and how safe do you feel that someone would be brought to justice should a tragedy happen to you or someone in your family? We need a new sheriff in town and that man, I believe, should be Levin White. From being a police officer working both street and in Gilpin court, Weed and Seed, Burglaries, Organized Crime Vice Unit, Narcotics, Homicide and being selected out of 23 other agents to serve in the office of Inspector General when the General Assembly of Virginia established the State Inspector General Office, I feel Levin

Creasey has shown dedication to county time and time again Dear Editor, I am very proud to say that I have lived in Goochland County all of my life. I was born and raised here, was educated in and taught in our public school system, was married here, raised my children here and will one day be laid to rest next to my son right here in Goochland County. I tell you all of this because I want to be clear how much I love Goochland. It is not just a place to reside, it is a part of who I am. In nearly 52 years, I have never once felt afraid for my safety nor the safety of my family. Sheriff Jim Agnew and the men and women who have worked alongside him during the last 28 years should be commended for a job well done. Thank you Sheriff Agnew for selflessly devoting much of your career to the citizens of Goochland County! Sheriff Agnew has chosen to endorse Steven Creasey as the next Sheriff of Goochland and his recommendation alone speaks volumes. If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Steven, he is 44 years old, has been happily mar-

Triathlete makes most of worldly opportunity Wirsing takes 18th in age group of world triathlon Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

GOOCHLAND -- Switzerland’s definitely a whole different experience and environment from Goochland. It’s one thing to say or infer that. But it’s another to see and live that difference, and Goochland triathlete Anna Kate Wirsing has. She not only got to travel to Switzerland this past Labor Day Weekend – she also got to race against some of the world’s best in the 2019 ITU World Triathlon championships held in Lausanne. The rolling hills made an impression on the cyclist, runner and swimmer; Goochland has some here, “but when you see some of them there, it’s a little overwhelming because they’re pretty steep” – she recalled with a chuckle – “which were fun; I like hills, so it was a disadvantage and an advantage at the same time.” The people around her spoke French, and the athletes she saw at the championships hailed from all over the world. She also got to see U.S. competitors from various age groups – in fact, 4 of the 11 U.S. girls in her group were from Virginia – and she remembered being inspired by an 85-year-old man who competed for the U.S. “He’s a super happy guy on the U.S. team,” Anna Kate said smiling. “I want to be 85 and be able to do a triathlon – that’s my goal in life.” It was definitely a very emotional race for her. “When I was going through the race, it was nerve-racking at first just because…it’s unbelievable how I got there - and seeing all these other people that I’ve never competed against or know. “But, you know, you’ve got to go out hard,” she said, “and just give it your all.” She kicked off the world triathlon with the swimming stretch, notching a time of 12:09 that ranked 18th best among the 38 girls who completed the race in her 16-19 age group from all across the globe. By the time she got

to the biking stretch that comprises the middle portion of the race, she saw that “nice little hill” – she described smiling – that she had to go up twice. “You’ve just got to push hard on it,” she said, “and you hear all the cheering…which helps you go through the race.” She recorded a 37:28 in cycling before shifting to the final element of the event: the running. That part of it was pretty fun, she said – and that part also had a steep 19 % grade hill. “But running happened to be one of my stronger ones in that race,” Anna Kate said. “It turned out for the best.” As she ran the final stretch, she heard one of the USA Triathlon coaches yelling out to her, telling her to catch the girl in front of her. At the time, the runner had about a 50-yard lead on Anna Kate. When they crossed the finish line, the two runners had finished about neck-and-neck, with Anna Kate, having just taken the American flag into her hand, making the hard charge to try and overtake her on the right side. Afterwards, Anna Kate found out that the girl she raced to the line – and finished within milliseconds of – happened to not be in her age group. Regardless, it was a finish to remember. At the end of it, Anna Kate Wirsing

Anna Kate’s athletic journey actually began with gymnastics; she did that for nine years and then, due to back issues, transitioned into running and swimming when she was 13. She would take on her first triathlon – the Pink Power Triathlon – later that year as an eighth grader. She really enjoyed running in cross country and track, and then swimming was fun to do with all of her friends. As for cycling, she had done a couple of mountain bike races as her dad was a pro cyclist. But doing all three together – running, swimming, and then biking –

and realizing: “Oh, I’m actually decent at the sport” really drew her to the competitiveness of it. She also likes the independent nature of triathlons. “You’re trying to beat your goal,” she said, “and kind of work as a team at the same time.” She’s earned multiple first-place finishes across local races, and she’s competed in nationals the past two years in Cleveland. She credited hard work to helping her place in the top 15 of last year’s nationals competition, thus qualifying her for the world championships in Switzerland. Anna Kate has also qualified for the 2020 world championships in Edmonton, Canada, and she’s looking forward to going to that world race next year. She plans to continue competing in triathlons beyond high school, whether that means doing so while in college or as a side pursuit in addition to running for a college cross country program. “I definitely could not have done all that effort and training by myself,” Anna Kate said, crediting Endorphin Fitness as well as her father and her swim coach Ed Boyle. They’ve all really encouraged her along the way, even through the hard times. “It was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime chance,” Anna Kate said of competing in the world triathlon championships. “But I definitely could not have done it without the support of the people in the community.”

had placed 18th in the female 16-19 age group of the 2019 ITU World Triathlon championships with an overall time of 1:16:29 and a 15th-best running-stretch time of 23:04. She also ranked 4th-best among the 10 Age 16-19 U.S. girls who completed the race. “It’s just an amazing experience and opportunity I was given,” she said, “and it really shows how much effort you have to put in to accomplish what you Contributed Photo Anna Kate Wirsing bikes during the 2019 ITU World Triathlon championships. can achieve.”

Goochland volleyball team sweeps the week Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor

GOOCHLAND -- Mary King delivered the ball to her opponent’s floor in a variety of ways. There was the ball she bumped high over her head - with her back to the net - and inside the boundaries for a kill. There was the floater at the net that she approached from the left, and instead of slamming it straight ahead of her - which would have gone towards the right side - she knocked it to the left and across Amelia’s shallow court. Then there was the towering airball that shot skywards off of an opponent’s block before King spiked it downwards from the net and into clear space. King tallied up 10 kills in all to help her Bulldogs blank Amelia 3-0 on Wednesday on sets of 25-11, 25-17 and 25-13. “They’re doing really well - I feel like they played really professional tonight,” Goochland coach Rachel Jacobsen said of her players. “They were working together really well, they were picking up off of each other, feeding off of each other. They worked really hard, they did well.” “It was pretty great,” King said of the sweep of Amelia. “Last year we lost away to them...but it was definitely still a challenge and we tried to rise to the occasion, running faster plays...” When the ball was smacked by King’s hand, sometimes the ball didn’t angle where the viewer think it would.

Nick Vandeloecht/Goochland Gazette

Goochland’s Mary King (21) spikes the ball to her left for the kill in the third set of the Bulldogs’ home match versus Amelia. King had 10 kills on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019, and the Bulldogs defeated Amelia 3-0.

But the misdirection was intended, and King excelled at mixing up her approach. “I see the court very well and am able to place the ball in certain places that I have either seen in the moment or noticed while I was off the court,” King said. “I try to anticipate what is going to happen next; for example, if I had just tipped two balls short, the other team will catch onto that and start playing short - which makes for a

perfect time to hit a deep corner.” Jacobsen called King a really intelligent hitter. “She’s looking at the other team when she’s swinging - she’s not just hitting the ball,” Jacobsen said. “She’s looking at what’s happening over there, she’s thinking through what she’s doing, when she’s doing it. It takes a lot of thought and a lot of maturity to be able to do that. It’s really good to have her this year, I’m excited.”

Goochland’s lineup on Wednesday was stacked with attack power, as Nova and Trinity Wonderling brought the effective hits on the outside to complement King in the middle. Jacobsen said that Nova - who on Wednesday delivered 5 kills and made 4 digs - has really started to come into her own. “I’m really excited about her moving forward this season,” Jacobsen said. “She’s done really, really well.”

Amelia also had to worry about Nina Smith, who secured her team the set point with an attack that deflected off an Amelia player’s hand in the second set, and Taylor Michaels, who continued to find the opponent’s floor on the cross-court attacks from the outside. Setter Trinity Wonderling tallied up 15 assists, and Libero Ellie Spencer locked down the back row with 18 digs. Goochland (4-0) also routed Randolph-Henry 3-0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-2) on Sept. 3. Smith had 5 kills, King made 4 kills, Trinity Wonderling had 16 assists and Spencer made 9 digs. Benedictine football takes on Maryland’s Avalon Visiting Black Knights deny Cadets 38-13 Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

GOOCHLAND -- The Avalon School Black Knights are becoming increasingly familiar with the Richmond area. Last week, the team traveled from its Wheaton, Maryland, campus to take on a tough Highland Springs team and got the result that has become the norm for the teams who do battle these days with the four-time defending state champs — a loss. They returned to Bobby Ross Stadium in Goochland for a rematch with Benedictine College Prep (2-1), a team who handed them a solid defeat last season. This time, however, the long trip home was more palatable as the Black Knights (1-1) topped the Cadets by a score of 38-13. It was Benedictine’s first loss of the season, and Coach Greg Lilly said a few miscues proved fatal in the defeat. He noted that they gave up 11 points in the kicking game - two punt

blocks for safeties, two missed field goals and one missed PAT. Benedictine quarterback Jay Woolfolk opened the scoring with a first quarter 28-yard scoring strike to Dillon Tennyson. The Black Knights answered with a opening quarter touchdown, but failed on the conversion, and the Cadets led 7-6 going in to the second period. Defensive lineman Joel Starlings came up big on defense in the second period on a scoop and score that gave the Cadets a 13-6 lead, but, again, the Knights answered, and they entered halftime trailing 13-12. The Cadets had their chances in the opening half with several impressive offensive drives, but those drives didn’t end in points for the Cadets. “We didn’t finish drives on offense in the first half and we didn’t take advantage of turnovers and good field position,” Lilly said. Avalon took advantage of their size to subdue the Cadets in the second half, and they were assisted by several miscues that led to Black Knight scores. “Avalon played hard in the first half,” Lilly said, “and then their size wore us down in the second half.”

Jim Ridolphi/For the Goochland Gazette

Benedictine’s Jay Woolfolk (9) eludes a Black Knights’ defender in first half action during the Cadets’ Sept. 6 game versus Avalon.

The coach said play in the trenches was difficult due to that size, and the Avalon lineup was impressive. “We played against a really good front seven today,” he said. “Our guys up front will continue to get better.” Avalon piled up 26 second half points against the Cadets’ defense.

“This game was an eye opener for us,” Lilly said. “We need to get a lot better and practice hard to improve each week throughout this season. As always, there’s no rest for the weary when it comes to Benedictine’s schedule as they prepare for a matchup with Fork Union Military Academy

this week. The Cadets will not discount the challenge FUMA presents and are preparing for another tough contest. “Coach Shuman will have them ready to play hard and physical,” Lilly noted, “because that’s the kind of player he was at FUMA and VA Tech.”
