EDWARD R. LAWTON Edward Rigby “Ed” Lawton passed on September 18, 2019. Raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Ed was introduced to the state of Virginia while serving as a Senate page in Washington D.C. He relished his years attending the University of Virginia, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and also where he fell in love with his future LAWTON wife, with whom he shared 47 years. Ed was a giver, volunteering for many organi-

zations in many ways during his life. While singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” the spark of an idea went on to his forming and evolving the West Richmond Little League. He served as president of the Bond Club of Virginia, the Goochland Chamber of Commerce, the Center for Rural Culture and Goochland Fellowship and Family Services (now Goochland CARES). A gifted athlete, Ed enjoyed playing tennis and golf as well as his favorite sport, baseball. As a Cubs fan and a longtime supporter of U.Va. athletics, he was thrilled to see his favorite teams win national titles in recent years. Ed touched many lives in many ways, but felt his greatest gift was through his

work as a financial advisor. He was grateful to have found a firm with a philosophy and culture that matched his own sense of integrity. He worked at Davenport & Company for more than 33 years, serving on the Board of Directors and in various leadership positions. He served his clients recognizing they in turn could serve the world in their own ways. Burial will be private. Friends, colleagues and clients (especially those with a good story) are invited to share in a celebration of Ed’s life Monday, September 30, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Westhampton Clubhouse of the Country Club of Virginia. Donations made in Ed’s memory may be made to Goochland CARES.

Play continued from >1 Performances dates will be Oct. 11 and 12 at 7 p.m., with a matinee Oct. 13 at 2 p.m., all at Goochland High School. The structure of the play is unusual, being made up of eleven short scenes that feature different couples experiencing the ups and downs of relationships: falling in and out of love, discovering what hurts and why, and deciding what to do with their feelings. Each of these scenes tells a separate story, yet they all take place during the same ten-minute span on the same winter evening, under a sky of stunning Northern Lights. Below the lights, each couple experiences a dose of magic and wonder, and each will be changed in those ten minutes.

“This play is like a puzzle,” says director Neil Burch, who heads the Theater program at Goochland High School. “Each of these characters goes through a process to see how their own pieces fit. Like the characters, the students in this show must work on their own acting challenges: listening and responding to each other and understanding the connections between the people in the stories. They have their own pieces to figure out so that they can deliver a whole story.” Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students. They can be purchased at the door prior to performances. To purchase online tickets up to 24 hours before a performance, visit drama.goochlandschools.org. For more information, contact Neil Burch, nburch@glnd.k12. va.us.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Need for high speed cannot be ignored By Roslyn Ryan Editor

When The Gazette put out a query on Facebook last week, asking Goochland residents who don’t have access to broadband coverage to share how this has impacted their daily lives, we expected to get at least a few replies. What we ended up getting, however, was far more feedback than we anticipated. While it is no secret that many Goochlanders, particularly those living in the western end of the county, have limited access to the kind of internet service that people in the more densely populated east

end enjoy, the real impact of the issue may not always be clear. Last week, however, as comment after comment came in, it quickly became obvious that most of the folks begging the county to do whatever it can to help expand broadband coverage are not doing so simply because they can’t manage to stream the latest season of Stranger Things. Instead, they shared stories of trouble keeping up with clients and struggling to complete homework assignments. They shared the financial toll of paying through the nose for inadequate service, and the annoyance of having to sit in dark parking lots to access WiFi

once they ran out of data. Some might say that high speed internet is a luxury, not a necessity, which I suppose there may be some evidence to support. And yet I won’t soon forget the story told to me not long ago by one Goochland mother, who one night found herself trying without success to send a video to her son’s pediatrician after the boy had suffered a seizure. No, having broadband may not typically be a matter of life and death, but it’s hard to argue its tremendous worth in a case like that. The business world is one area in which slow speeds are simply unacceptable. Telecommuting, once an arrangement reserved for

a lucky few, has become a reality for far more people these days, but oftentimes being able to do it requires that the employee have access to adequate internet and cellular service. Yes, surviving — even telecommuting — without broadband can be done. But as the Goochland County leadership has realized, having the needed access has become a quality of life issue that needs to be addressed. We applaud the county for its efforts, and hope that a planned increase in resources devoted to the issue will prove beneficial. The need for speed, as we can no longer deny, is real indeed.

Memories of State Fair of Virginia still spark joy By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

Just when you feel that first chill in the air, it’s a good reminder that the State Fair of Virginia is just around the corner. It’s a tradition Virginians have enjoyed for many years. The location and attractions may have changed over the years as it moved from Henrico County to its current Caroline County location, but the fun and excitement of a day at the

fair have not. When I began attending, the State Fair was a big deal, worthy of a half-day off from school and a free ticket handed out by the teacher. We called it School Day at the fair, and many of my friends would make it a point to attend on that day so we could all frolic and explore together. The fair was a different place then, a bit seedier with more strange attractions. The freak shows, burlesque tents, and other

oddities were things you saw only when the fair came to town. It brought with it a strange cast of characters that introduced you to a strange but intriguing world outside of our comfort zones. The State Fair of Virginia is now a well-run professionally-operated display of agriculture, crafts, and manufactured goods combined with carnival rides and well-produced stage shows. Letters to the Editor November election: Creasey is the right man for sheriff’s role Dear Editor, I am a lifetime resident of Goochland County and, based on my experience in administrative law and law enforcement, it is with great pleasure and interest that I endorse Sergeant Steven Creasey for Sheriff of Goochland County. I met Steven professionally some 20+ years ago when I was appointed as a Magistrate for the Supreme Court of Virginia assigned to Goochland County. I worked very closely with the officers of Goochland County Sheriffs Department, Virginia State Police, Virginia Probation and Parole Officers, Virginia Department of Mental Health personnel as well as the general public regarding issuance of arrest warrants, bond hearings, citizens with mental health issues and other situations with reference to criminal law. During my 20+ years as a Magistrate I had the opportunity to observe Sergeant Creasey performing his official duties as a Deputy Sheriff. I can truly say that he performed his duties in the most professional manner, always with integrity, honesty, character, ethics and respect. Sergeant Creasey is a life-long resident of Goochland County and has dedicated most of his life serving the citizens of Goochland as a fire and rescue volunteer and now as a Deputy Sheriff. Steven is very dedicated to his lovely wife Grace and their daughter Ellie, and is a great family man. During my adult life I have spent most of it in administrative law and law enforcement. I served two terms on the Goochland County Board of Supervisors, served as Chairman of the Richmond Regional Transportation Organization, member of the Virginia Chief of Police Association, Virginia State Sheriffs Association, retired from the see Letters > page 7

for 24 September at 7-9 p.m. in the high school auditorium and all three factions and candidates agreed well in advance to a highly detailed (4-page single spaced) set of rules and conditions. A previous attempt to hold such a May forum for the candidates, sponsored by the Goochland Democratic Committee had seen Steven Creasey withdraw at the last minute on the grounds that he refuses to participate in unbalanced groups, partisan events. I would like to note here that he did not have a problem showing up to a GDC sponsored meet and greet for two candidates running in District 1 and 2. Accordingly, considerable care was taken to get everybody on board well ahead of this month’s event. Alas, on 21 September – just three days before the new forum – the Goochland Republicans suddenly withdrew their sponsorship and “strongly urged” their endorsed candidate (Mr. Creasey) to drop out, also. This he did. One could be excused for forming the impression that Mr. Creasey is afraid to face the voters unless he can control everything. This time, for example, after agreeing to the forum back in July, his handlers asked if they would receive questions ahead of time due to the online portal being closed on September 22 Excuse me, but the county needs a law enforcement chief who can think for himself,

without relying on prep teams. If he becomes sheriff, do we anticipate that human traffickers will provide him with details of their plans and activities? Mr. Creasey also seems uneasy about rebuttal cards, which are part of any forum. This is Politics 101: being able to rebut or respond to someone’s comment interactively is part and parcel of the political process. I question any candidate who does not want an opportunity to rebut their opponent and more importantly present themselves to the community of voters. Mr. Creasey’s withdrawal statement (which was given cover by the Republicans) stated that he will continue to meet with voters during his canvassing efforts. I do not doubt this, but canvassing a county with 18,000 voters makes it highly unlikely that you and I will see him on our front porches. If you do, ask your questions and if you like his answers, vote for him. But if he doesn’t show up there, he doesn’t deserve your vote. When I attend such candidate forums, I may or may not submit a question, but I always learn from what other voters have submitted. None of their queries will be aired on your porch. But the simple fact is that no politician worth his salt hides from the voters and insists on controlling the discourse. This move by the Creasey team

remains the same. Children still wait in line to climb in a state trooper’s car or climb gleefully on shiny new tractors, and the magic of animals and agriculture still capture the attention of the most devoted city dwellers. The excitement of the midway, the insistence of barkers enticing customers to sample their goods or the smell of freshly fried onion rings is a

combination that’s hard to beat. There’s something for everyone at the State Fair, whether it’s a prize-winning watermelon the size of a Volkswagen, or just appreciating the skill it requires to make a homemade quilt. And for people watchers, it’s an event that has no equal. It all begins on Friday, Sept. 27, and tickets are on sale now. Trust me, you’ll feel better with a little sawdust under your feet.

Bulldogs roll out 48 first-half points, win 55-6 home for a contest against undefeated Amelia. “Randolph-Henry looks to be a better team than they were a year ago, even though their record doesn’t show that,” Fruth said. “Amelia is undefeated with a big game against a tough, physical Nottoway this Friday, so the next couple of weeks are going to show us what we can be once we polish up our offense, get our defense completely healthy and solve some special teams issues.” Fruth said special team play continues to improve and provide opportunities for the team. “Our special teams have made some big plays this year and hopefully will continue to do so,” Fruth said. “Devin’s punting, our kickoff return by Kam Holman to start this game, Will Stratton’s blocked FG and multiple other plays are making a difference. This part of the game will give us the edge down the road.” The coach said he’s looking for steps in that direction in all aspects of the game for the remainder of the schedule. “The challenge is simple: can we improve each and every week?”

Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

The Bulldogs scored 14 points before their offense ever touched the ball. Hosting the undermanned but determined Cumberland Dukes in their 2019 home opener at Goochland High School, the Bulldogs rolled out to a 48-0 first-half lead en route to routing the Dukes 55-6. A sure sign of things to come, Kameron Holman took the opening kickoff and raced it 70 yards to open the flood gates. His fiery score was followed seconds later by a second touchdown when Will Stratton picked up a fumble and raced it 30 yards to paydirt, accounting for one of his two first-half scores. “Will Stratton was in the right place at the right time over and over again Friday night,” Goochland coach Alex Fruth said after the game. “Two fumble recoveries for touchdowns - that’s impressive.” But the coach said the entire defense is anchoring this year’s squad with quality, tough play. “This defense is the definition of aggressiveness and suffocating,” Fruth said. “Each week they make effort play after effort play. “We are also a better tackling team than we were last year,” he said, “which has shown up in the lack of big plays we have given up.” When the offense finally did take the field, it didn’t get better for the visiting Dukes. Quarterback CJ Towles found Hunter Willms for a 34-yard scoring strike. Wingback Devin McCray scored the first of his two first-half touchdowns on a 39 yard first quar-

ter run. He followed that up with a 5-yard scoring run. Dakhari Burgess rumbled 41 yards in the second period for another score, and by the time halftime arrived, the Dukes found themselves in a 48-0 hole. Most Bulldogs came off the bench to play in the second half. “A game like this lets us build depth – get kids under those Friday night lights in order to get those first-time

jitters out and get things on tape that we can look at and fix/adjust,” the coach said. “We get better at our twos and threes because of a game like this.” The offensive explosion was also a positive sign for the coach, but he realizes there is room for improvement on that side of the ball. But the Cumberland win did provide some answers. “We are a work in progress still at this point of the year,”

Fruth said. “Offenses always take longer to gel, but we just haven’t had the same 11 out there yet for a Friday night. “It was good to have our starting 5 OL get a chance to play two games in a row together. This will build confidence, group cohesiveness and the ability to talk to each other to adjust plays on the fly.” The improvement comes after a tough stretch for the Bulldogs schedule-wise that Fruth described as a mixed

blessing. “We started the year out with our toughest stretch of the schedule. That’s good and bad,” Fruth said. “We exposed our biggest issues right off the bat, but didn’t get to gain that confidence built. “But we will be better for that start, especially at quarterback and offensive line.” The Bulldogs (2-1) will test that improved confidence against Randolph Henry next week on the road, then return

PRO CORNER Verlander earns 20th win of 2019 season Goochland son Justin Verlander earned his 20th pitching win of the season and helped his Houston Astros secure their third straight AL West division title in a Sept. 22 win over the Los Angeles Angels, 13-5. Verlander allowed 6 hits and 2 earned runs and struck out 5 in 5 innings pitched. This is Verlander’s first 20-win season since he won 24 games in 2011 with the Detroit Tigers.

Cadets to take on Flint Hill Staff Report

OAKTON – Benedictine Football (3-1) travels to Flint Hill (2-1) on Saturday, Sept. 28 for a 1 p.m. matchup on Flint Hill’s turf field. Flint Hill will look to rebound from a 27-7 loss to Collegiate on Sept. 20. Through their first two games, the Huskies excelled through the air with two capable quarterbacks in junior Alex Ballinger (12-16 for 335 yards and 3 touchdowns in a 28-6 win over Paul VI) and sophomore Mert Guney (10-14-1INT with 228 yards and 3 TDs in a 48-7 win over St. James). The Huskies’ sophomore running back Bryson Robertson recorded a 105-yard rushing game with the help of a 70-yard tear against St. James.

Justice Ellison’s 3-yard run accounted for the Huskies’ sole touchdown against Collegiate. Benedictine’s Cadets are coming off of a bye week after their 45-31 shootout win over Fork Union Military Academy on Friday, Sept. 13. Benedictine rallied from a narrow 28-26 deficit to outscore the home team 19-3 in the fourth and final quarter behind a 29-yard field goal from Gary Seigler, Tate Plageman’s 12-yard pass to Josh McCray and an incendiary 50-yard rush from Henry Dolan. That monster run wasn’t even Dolan’s longest score of the game, as the junior standout went off for a 68-yard run in the third quarter. He added another ground score for 36

yards and racked up 277 yards and the 3 touchdowns on 29 carries. For his performance, Dolan on Sept. 18 was named the 804 varsity player of the week. The rushing game didn’t just end with Dolan, as his Benedictine teammate David Ngendakuriyo churned out 164 yards and a fiery touchdown run of his own - for 67 yards - on 8 carries. Plageman threw for two scores. Benedictine’s big run game complements a strong passing attack led by quarterback Jay Woolfolk through the early stretch. The Cadets stay on the road at Georgetown Prep on Friday, Oct. 4 (7 p.m.) before returning home to host Collegiate on Friday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m.

Another volunteer had his car keyed, received phone threats and his car antenna broken all because he supports Levin White. What is really going on in this community? Why is this race so important that smear and intimidation tactics are
