Goochland students will have the chance to hear a unique perspective on American history next week. On Tuesday, Oct. 8, Kenneth B. Morris, Jr., the Co-Founder and President of Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives, will be speaking to students at Goochland Middle School and Goochland High School. The great-great-great grandson of Frederick Douglass and the great-great grandson of Booker T. Washington, Morris will share a perspective related to the legacies of his forefathers. Some county residents may have previously heard Morris speak during the 100th birthday celebration for Goochland’s Second Union Rosenwald School last year. One of a handful of surviving Rosenwald Schools, Second Union’s Rosenwald School was the result of a partnership between philanthropist Julius Rosenwald and famed educator Booker T. Washington in the early part of the see Morris > 2

GoochlandCares will host annual ‘Building Bridges of Hope’ Oct. 16 Contributed report

GoochlandCares will host its signature annual event, Building Bridges of Hope, on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Hope Church (12445 Patterson Avenue, Richmond). The event will offer two sessions fro attendees to chose from, including a breakfast at 8 a.m. or lunch at noon. Each session will be less than an hour, and will be a celebration of the organization’s clients, a renewal of the commitment to quality care, and an expression of gratitude to the Goochland community. The keynote speaker will be John A. Budesky, Goochland County Administrator, who will speak about how the impact of

individual support is amplified by cooperation and coordination with other non-profits, government agencies, and local businesses. “While pockets of the county are wealthy, almost 10 percent of Goochland residents still struggle every day whether it is to put food on their tables or do not have health insurance or to pay bills,” said Sally Graham executive director of GoochlandCares. “At Building Bridges of Hope, we share our vision of a community where everyone’s basic human needs are met including quality health care, secure housing, nutritious food, adequate clothing, and

freedom from violence.” Building Bridges of Hope is a free event intended to inform and inspire guests to want to learn more about and become engaged with GoochlandCares. Whether through a monetary gift, in-kind donations, or volunteering in one of our twelve assistance programs, all levels of interest are welcome. Callihan continued from >1 Callihan, a Navy veteran whose own WWII service included serving aboard the USS Block Island from 19441946, will himself be honored on Oct. 19, when he is inducted into the Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame. The honor will serve as the capstone to a career that has earned Callihan myriad awards and accolades for public service, as well as the respect and admiration of his peers. “He is one of the most honorable people I know,” said John Myers, a fellow Navy veteran who came to know Callihan through his affiliation with Goochland’s American Legion Post 215, the current home of which Callihan lead the drive to build, debt free. “He has dedicated his life to the American Legion, and he supports us in all of our efforts.” Callihan’s reputation for generosity and humility is wellknown, Myers said, and not just among fellow Legion Post members. Simply put, Myers said, “I have never in all my life heard anyone say a bad word about Floyd Callihan.” While nine decades may seem like quite a few years — Callihan turned 93 on Monday, Sept. 30 — the Goochland resident seems to have packed in enough living for twice that many. Born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1927, Callihan was already showing an industrious streak by the time he was in high school, spending much of the time he wasn’t studying working in a local pie shop. With the United States embroiled in war in the Pacific and in Europe, he left school in 1944 before he finished his senior year to join the US Navy (he would eventually be awarded his diploma). Assigned to the carrier USS Block Island, Callihan spent his days helping to protect the

Atlantic shipping lanes from the threat of German submarines, which had been sinking large numbers of American military transports. It was during this time, Callihan remembers, that he first fell in love with the idea of flying as he watched the pilots take off and land on the carrier’s deck. Callihan began taking flying lessons in 1953, the same year he joined the United States Air Force Auxiliary, the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), as a warrant officer in the Northfield Senior Squadron. He quickly earned his private pilot’s license, and would eventually earn his multi-engine and commercial licenses as well. After years of dedication and perseverance—during which he was credited with 16 “finds” and 6 “saves” as a search and rescue pilot— Callihan achieved the rank on full Colonel and was appointed Commanding Officer of the CAP’s 1,500 member Virginia Wing. Serving from 19801983, he oversaw a program that would be rated first in the nation in operational readiness, a distinction for which Callihan was honored by the United States Congress in 1981. Throughout his career, Callihan earned high praise for his willingness to roll up his sleeves and get things done, from producing a comprehensive safety manual for the Virginia Wing (still in use today), to negotiating a 100-year, $100 dollar lease with Chesterfield County for a new Wing headquarters at Chesterfield County Airport. Though he isn’t likely to share them himself, Callihan’s accolades have been many: In 1999 alone, he was named Virginia Wing Senior Member of the Year; Virginia Wing Safety Officer of the Year and the Middle East Region Safety Officer of the Year. As Callihan’s time with the Civil Air Patrol was drawing to a close, Major General Antonio Pineda wrote to him as follows: “You are to be commended for your many years of devoted service to your community, state and nation. You have made a lasting impact on Civil Air Patrol in your years of service, and your contributions have been of enduing value. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Forums offer candidates valuable opportunity By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Call it a sign of the times. The trend in politics these days — at least in several recent campaigns I’ve been able to observe — is for a candidate to surround himself or herself with a carefullyselected cadre of handlers, advisors and experienced campaign gurus. There are strategy sessions to attend, meet and greets to host, and Facebook pages to maintain. There is data to analyze and optics to consider. The sophistication is a thing to behold, from the slickly produced campaign materials to

the opposition research — all of it reminiscent of (and perhaps gleaning its tenor from) much largerscale races at the state and national level. Gone are the unscripted moments that allow voters to see the real person running for office, replaced instead with carefully crafted talking points and appearances in only “friendly” environments. While this move towards a more modern method of campaigning may offer the candidate that subscribes to it a better chance at finishing in first place, it can prove regrettable in other ways.

The Goochland Republican Committee’s recent choice to pull out of a scheduled Sept. 24 candidates’ forum, reportedly based on the fact that they could not guarantee that their candidate would be treated fairly, was well within their rights to make. Their candidates had already attended one such event, and another opportunity will come this month. Still, one can’t help but wonder at the idea that a political party’s leadership would not have a greater degree of confidence in their candidates to handle themselves under less-than-ideal circumstances. In doing this, they appeared

to say that the candidates they support to serve the people of Goochland cannot be trusted to think on their feet or respond to criticism, warranted or unwarranted. Campaign signs, websites, brochures and endorsements are wonderful ways to communicate a message, but all pale in comparison to actually delivering the message. Many residents of Goochland have vociferously expressed their confidence in the candidates currently supported by the GOP. It’s a shame, then, that the party leadership doesn’t appear ready to offer the same.

Days of the dining car marked special time in travel By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

Is the Amtrak dining car headed for the same fate as plastic drinking straws — a form of social extinction prompted by societal changes in attitude? In an effort to save more than $2 million annually, Amtrak recently announced a plan that will phase out the dining car and freshly prepared meals on many of its trains. Many contend the soothing nature of the dining car was the

last symbol of train travel when it provided a unique, exotic experience. Others contend those romantic memories have been just that for many years, citing bad service and mediocre food on the once Five Star eateries. My earliest memories of train travel are centered on trips to the dining car. It was a respite from the monotony of the clicking tracks and scenery that too soon became uniform. Back then, the dining car was no place to fool around. I remember

my mother washing our faces and straightening our clothes in preparation for our trip to the dining car. Starched white tablecloths and napkins indicated a sense of quality and class, and the food, as I remember it, was good. But, there’s always been more to the dining car than just the food or individual attention. Due to its limited seating, guests were often seated with customers who they didn’t know. For some it was an awkward experience, but, for many, it was a chance to meet new people

and share experiences. It was all part of a menagerie of experiences that made train travel popular and often the preferred option for travelers seeking options to air travel. The mystery of that era is hard to find when you board an Amtrak train these days. I suppose train travel has become more of just a travel option than an anticipated journey. Letters to the Editor Hobbs is best qualified to serve residents as District 2 supervisor Dear Editor, Wendy Hobbs is a dedicated and successful leader who has served the Goochland community for many years in many capacities. The term ‘servant leader’ is overused; however, Mrs. Hobbs deserves the title more than anyone else I know. She holds or has held leadership positions in numerous community non-profit organizations, including the Kates Foundation, Goochland Recreational Center, Goochland NAACP, Goochland County Community Health Improvement Steering Committee. She rose through the ranks of the Virginia Correctional Department to serve as Superintendent, Warden and Regional Administrative of Prisons. Mrs. Hobbs’ road to breaking barriers and demonstrating courage started early in her life when she was one of the first to integrate a previously segregated school. This experience is often minimized. Parents often go to great lengths to protect their children. They ensure their children are matched with supportive teachers and protected from bullies. African-American parents in the 1960s had to put their children in harm’s way for the more significant cause of obtaining a better education for all children. As a young child, Mrs. Hobbs was separated from her former friends and classmates and endured an unfriendly environment to blaze a trail for other AfricanAmerican children. She was courageous then, and she remains courageous now, as she fights for equality and fair treatment of all citizens. In addition to her extensive work and volunteer experience, Mrs. Hobbs is highly educated, having earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Master’s degree in Administration. She is a wife, mother and grandmother. She knows the challenges of working, managing a see Letters > page 7

Neilson-Hall will be an advocate for Goochland residents Dear Editor, I’m writing to share my enthusiastic endorsement of Crystal Neilson-Hall. I have known Crystal for five years. Crystal and I share a vocation; we are both farmers. I intimately understand the rigors of dairy animals, and I am so impressed with how she cares for her animals and her business. Crystal operates her farm and her business with organized determination. She is frugal, yet knows where to invest money for the highest yields and best use. She tirelessly plugs away at her goals until they are achieved. When elected she will give our community this focused attention. When Crystal encounters a problem she researches, consults experts, and figures out how to solve it. I know that when Crystal is elected she will be a tireless advocate for the residents of the First District and an asset to our whole county. Emily Reusing Hebner, Columbia

These days, ‘Politics’ has become one of the new dirty word Dear Editor, What stops people from getting involved in local, community initiatives? What keeps qualified, respected citizens from running for local government office? What keeps people home on Election Day? Politics. That’s what. It’s a dirty word. Believe me. I know. I’ve seen it first-hand. When you mix local community concerns with personalities across a wide, diverse area, apparently, people can get offended; they get annoyed with

7

each other. They take on a cause and cannot be persuaded to even consider another angle. Things can get personal and escalate to ugly quickly. It’s truly a shame. Respect for differing viewpoints is gone. Treating people as you would like to be treated is a concept of the past, for sure. Telling the truth – unbiased by one’s political angle – rarely happens. Trust is gone. I’ve waded into the quagmire of politics and it is not fun. I’ve brought a few others along the way and they have been appalled at the rancor and lack of decorum they’ve seen from a group of supposedly intelligent adults. It’s soured many from any additional involvement in local, community concerns. That, too, is a shame. For our county to continue to be a great place to live, we need citizens to be engaged and be able to talk with each other without the taint of “politics.” We need to trust that each of us wants the best for our community though we may differ on the steps to take. see Correspondence > 9

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County

October 3, 2019

Correspondence continued from >7 We need to listen to each other and consider alternatives to foster better solutions. We need to stop the childish antics and respect each other. Let’s hope the population of Goochland gets involved enough to read more than road signs about the candidates this election cycle. It’s a responsibility to make informed decisions

End of an era continued from >6 chance personal encounters with strangers prompted officials to make the move beginning this fall. One explained that millennials don’t like the idea of sitting with people with whom they are unacquainted, and are more comfortable with prepackaged meals served in their berths. If that’s true, it’s sad. But, I believe there are a majority of millennials who, given the choice, would still opt for the dining car, especially those who have suffered through a pre-packaged sandwich in the club car. When I Goochland mention one candidate’s name, the only thing people say is that he is a “good guy”. While that is all well and good, I know plenty

lennials are uncomfortable interacting with strangers also is questionable in my mind. Sure, it’s true we live in a world of conveniences that don’t enhance personal interaction. We have our groceries delivered to our doors followed by take-out served up by a delivery driver, and buying clothes at the department store is the exception, not the rule. The new dining car policy follows that line of thinking and officials say customers welcome the flexibility of extended ordering hours and room service versus the often long waits and limited selections in the dining car. Trips that require overnight travel for one night will be the first routes affected by the changes, and an Asian noodle

bowl will replace steaks cooked to order. Understanding the immense pressure on rail travel, and its record of unprofitable operation for decades, it’s hard to criticize them for attempting to save money by eliminating kitchens and staff aboard the trains. But, I think they might be underestimating the potential backlash created by the changes, and they might be surprised to learn that the dining car is a part of Americana that travelers are not anxious to surrender. If the changes don’t work, and Amtrak revives meal service served by wait staff, you can be assured the fault will be placed firmly at the feet of the group that caused the problem: those doggone millennials.

Goochland grows victory streak to 3 straight Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

The Bulldogs traveled to Randolph Henry to capture their third win of the season in a 43-16 victory over the Statesmen this past weekend. Keyshawn Smith recorded three touchdowns - two receiving and one rushing and quarterback CJ Towles tossed two touchdown passes in the victory. “Keyshawn Smith and Hunter Willms came up big at wing back,” Goochland coach Alex Fruth said after the win, noting how they “made big play after big play.” Goochland scored early in the opening quarter when Smith rumbled 10 yards for an opening score with eight minutes remaining. Khalil Holman pounced on a Statesmen fumble and Kam Holman capitalized when he gathered a 29-yard CJ Towles pass to put the Bulldogs up 14-0, still in the opening stanza. Fruth said his sophomore quarterback gets better each week with an expanding role in the offense. “CJ has the keys to the car, so to speak. We let him get us in and out of plays based on the defense’s look,” Fruth said. “This week he took full advantage of that and felt comfortable checking us into three or four big-time plays.” The coach also attributed the improved play to Towles having time to read defenses and make good throws. “The offensive line has done a really nice job of protecting him, which gives him time in the pocket to make the throws that we are asking him to,” Fruth said. With several key injuries in the Bulldogs’ backfield, Fruth

Goochland sophomore quarterback CJ Towles (9) tossed two touchdown passes in last week’s win at Randolph Henry.

said his team responded. “Overall, without a single starter in our backfield playing outside of CJ (Towles) and Dahkari (Burgess), I was really happy how we did Friday night.” The offensive barrage continued in the second half when

Hunter Willms raced 47 yards for a score on the first play of the second half, making the score 35-0 and starting a running clock for the remainder of the game. With a 3-1 start, Goochland made the no. 2 ranking for Region 3B behind

James Monroe (2-2) in the VHSL Top 20 Rankings, which were announced Monday, Sept. 30. Fruth’s focus has now turned to Amelia, the Bulldogs’ opponent for next week’s Homecoming game and a serious challenge.

“The defense will need to come prepared,” Fruth said. “Amelia is going to throw a bunch of different looks at the boys and force them to align properly. “Amelia will then look for the big-play ball if the look is there or they feel they have

a matchup advantage,” Fruth said. “It should be a great test for our defense, especially our defensive backs and linebackers.” Fruth said his team would maintain the normal routine for the upcoming tilt with Amelia. It’s not only Homecoming, but also the designated Coach to Cure game for the Bulldogs. Coach to Cure is an annual event sponsored by the American Football Coaches Association to increase awareness and raise funds for children suffering from Duchene’s Muscular Dystrophy. For more than a decade, Goochland has supported the effort by hosting Jack Ridolphi at the game and raising funds for research. “Coach to Cure is one of the best things the AFCA, college football, and multiple high school football teams do,” Fruth said. “As you know, it’s a bit more meaningful here at Goochland due to our relationship with you (Jim Ridolphi) and your son, Jack.” Fruth said the event delivers a positive and poignant message for his players and staff. “For the coaches who have been around, we have seen Jack grow up in front of our eyes,” Fruth said. “For the boys who have played or are playing for Goochland, it’s a relationship that reminds all of us how we should embrace each day and take care of those around us.” Game time is 7 p.m on Friday, Oct. 4. (Sports editor’s note: Jack Ridolphi is the son of this article’s author, Jim Ridolphi. For more than a decade, Goochland has hosted the Coach to Cure game for Jack. Jim said: “Their generosity and compassion is overwhelming.”)

Goochland volleyball team rolls out to 10-0 By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

GOOCHLAND – Through their first 10 matches in the regular season, the Bulldogs have gone to 4 sets just once. They won that match as well. Following a sweep of James River District opponent Buckingham (25-12, 25-21, 25-21) in straight sets, Goochland Volleyball remained unbeaten at 10-0 going into Tuesday’s road contest at Cumberland. “It feels really good. We’re all working really hard for it,” said senior Ilaria Russell. “It’s paying off.” “It’s exciting…I expect them to do well and do their best every game,” said Goochland head coach Rachel Jacobsen, “and luckily for us, that’s enough to win every game. We’re just doing what we’re supposed to be doing and I’m glad to see them growing and learning and doing their best.” The Bulldogs won their first 8 regular-season matches in straight sets before running into Bluestone on Sept. 24. “We both came in undefeated and only one team was gonna come out with that win,” Russell said. “It felt really nice that it was us.” The Bulldogs led 1-0 on a dominant opening frame of 25-14, but the opposing home team battled back to tie the match, edging Goochland in the second 25-22. Goochland, however, did more than rebound, trouncing Bluestone 25-13 in the third set before taking the fourth and final one on a winning mark of 25-18. Senior middle Mary King rolled out 10 kills, 3 blocks and 5 aces on Sept. 24 while young outside hitter Nova

Wonderling and senior setter Trinity Wonderling each delivered 7 kills. Trinity also contributed 25 assists and 2 service aces, and Libero Ellie Spencer made 18 digs. Young setter Blair Bussells continued to impress, delivering 12 assists and 2 aces in addition to Trinity’s numbers. Against Buckingham on

Thursday, Goochland rocketed out to a 14-0 first-set lead with Nova serving for 13 straight points, and went on to showcase its depth through the duration of the match. Junior outside hitter Taylor Michaels and freshman right side hitter Nina Smith both got to shine at home, with Michaels adding 13 digs to 5

kills and Smith dishing out 6 kills along with a pair of blocks. Nova made 11 digs behind 3 service aces. Russell was at the center of Goochland’s defensive effort throughout the three sets, going after diving-receiveafter-diving-receive. “She’s looking for the ball – she knows it’s going to come to

her, and even if it’s not necessarily coming to her, she wants it to come to her,” Jacobsen said of Russell. “She and Ellie both really have that Libero sort of energy, and it’s great to have them both around, and Ilaria did awesome tonight.” Nova, Michaels and Rachel Carter all joined Russell in successfully diving to save

points for Goochland in Thursday’s match. “It was really nice – I felt really good about myself and my teammates tonight,” Russell said. “We had some really nice hits as well.” One of those hits was a lasering kill from sophomore Nova to seal-up match point for the Bulldogs in the third and final set. “Nova’s got that kind of swing,” Jacobsen said. “She’s doing great.” Sophomore Blair Bussells in the closing stretch picked a surefire ace and wrapped up a competitive point on a setter dump for a kill. “Blair is everywhere,” Jacobsen said. “I mean, she’s just a blur on the court, sprinting all over the place.” Megan Harlow also picked up some key reps for points up front for Goochland on Thursday. “She’s been doing great; she’s been working really hard,” Jacobsen said of Harlow. “We’ve been working a lot on moving around there in the front...she’s doing it all. We’ve even been trying her right side some. She’s a great player allaround. She’s a lot of fun and she works really hard.” The Bulldogs are excited to keep on going. After playing Cumberland on Oct. 1 and Fluvanna on Oct. 2, they will host Randolph-Henry at home on Thursday, Oct. 3, play at Amelia on Tuesday, Oct. 8 and host Prince Edward County on Thursday, Oct. 10. Varsity games follow JV’s games, which all begin at 5:30 p.m. “We have to keep our energy up; we have to keep bringing our teammates up, not letting anyone get down,” Russell said, “and just play as a team – work together.”

Pro corner Verlander earns 3,000th career strikeout Goochland alum Justin Verlander pitched his 3,000th career strikeout - as well as his 300th of the 2019 regular season - in his Houston Astros’ 6-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday, Sept. 28. According to ESPN, Verlander became the 18th major league pitcher to earn 3,000 career strikeouts and the 19th in the modern era - since 1900 - to deliver 300 strikeouts in a single sea-

son. He reached K #3,000 on a slider to fan Kole Calhoun swinging, although Calhoun would reach first on a wild pitch. Verlander came in with 288 season K’s and reached exactly 300 on 12 punchouts. It’s the first time Verlander has ever thrown 300 K’s in a season in his career. Verlander (21-6) earned the win in 6 innings pitched. He and the Astros begin the American League Division Series on Friday, Oct. 4 at 2:05 p.m. against the winner of the Oakland Athletics and the Tampa Bay Rays.

Staff Report

OAKTON - Aided by 29 points scored collectively by defense and special teams - including three picksixes by three different players - Benedictine pulled away to defeat Flint Hill 35-13 on the road on Saturday, Sept. 28. Sophomore cornerback Eddie Jackson III terrorized Flint Hill from the secondary, catching at least two interceptions - including one for a touchdown - and deflecting another pass into the air that Jackson’s teammate Nick Turner intercepted and took to the house down the left side for a touchdown from 35 yards out. Turner also caught a pass for a touchdown on offense, as Tate Plageman connected with him on a 28-yarder. Jackson’s biggest highlight came when Flint Hill was pressuring to score in the Cadets’ red zone. He read the pass to the wide receiver - who started along the far left side but stepped inside to the right - and he got directly in front of that receiver to catch the quarterback’s short pass in the end zone before tearing on down the right side for the incendiary 102-yard score. He wasn’t alone in turning a touchdown opportu-

nity for Flint Hill into a touchdown for Benedictine. With the home team inside the Cadets’ 10, Gary Seigler - who is also the Cadets’ kicker - dashed along the right side just as the left-handed QB turned to throw a dart and swept in front of the intended receiver to snatch up the pass in transition. Seigler never interrupted his pace while making the interception; he stayed on the move to sprint on down the right side for a fiery 94-yard touchdown. All-in-all, the three defenders combined for 233 return yards on the three pick-sixes. Defense and special teams came together to make a fourth score by their hands possible as the Cadets’ defense held Flint Hill to a punt, and Josh McCray returned that punt for a touchdown. Benedictine’s main quarterback for the contest, Tate Plageman, completed 7 of 15 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. The Cadets (4-1) stay on the road for a third straight game to play Georgetown Prep (2-2) in North Bethesda, Maryland for a 7 p.m. contest on Friday, Oct. 4. After that, Benedictine will at last play in front of the home crowd again, this time against Collegiate (currently 3-1) on Friday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m.

Deadline to sign up for Master Gardener training Nov. 1 Contributed report

Now is the time to complete the application for an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge about gardening and give back to your community. All applications for the Goochland Powhatan Master Gardener training program for 2020 must be turned in by Nov. 1, 2019. The program offers more than 50

hours of instruction on a broad range of horticultural topics, including garden flowers, ornamental trees and shrubs, insect/plant disease identification, weed management, soils and plant nutrition, vegetable gardening, home fruit production, lawn care, and water conservation. All classes are taught by Virginia Tech extension specialists, agents, and

local experts. In exchange for training, participants are asked to volunteer time to their County Extension program with at least 50 hours of volunteer service within one year following the training to earn their certification as a Master Gardener. The type of service done by Master Gardeners varies according to com-

munity needs, and the abilities and interests of the Master Gardeners. Some Master Gardeners answer telephone requests for information related to gardening while others staff plant clinics or displays at community events. They may help establish community garden projects, work with 4-H youth, or assist their agent with press releases related to gardening.

The Master Gardener coordinator in the County Extension office decides how volunteer time can be best utilized. Tuition for the training class is $135 (cash or check). Applications can be acquired online at gpmga. org or by calling the Goochland Extension Office at (804) 556-5841 or the Powhatan Extension Office at (804) 598-5640.

this type of behavior and things said on his behalf? Sometimes by saying nothing; you say much. If this candidate can’t direct his supporters to conduct themselves on his behalf; how can we expect him to protect all the citizens of the County equally? Should those that don’t support him be concerned that there will be some sort of bias against them if they ever need help? These are questions I will be asking myself in the voting booth. Sincerely, Constance Arnett Gum Spring

did we arrive at such a complicated health care situation? Where is the leadership to guide us out of this morass? Our elected leaders talk a good game but it seems the big drug companies’ contributions put our representatives on the spot. Money is needed to get elected but once in office, contributors are hard to ignore. It is time to stand up to the drug companies whose main interest seems to be money, not health. There is someone running for office to represent the 56th District in the House of Delegates this November. Her name is Juanita Jo Matkins. If elected, she will represent my part of Goochland County. She is refusing to accept contributions from “Big Pharma” and is prepared to stand up for all the citizens of the 56th District. She will work tirelessly to ensure fair health care access for us all. She has my vote. I hope you’ll check her out. I think you’ll like what you see. Sincerely, Maureen Kennedy Goochland

Residents need leaders who don’t ignore science

Since Germ Theory was established (mid-19th C), medical science has tripled our lifespan. This suggests that its high standards and biasminimizing procedures are worthy of respect. Right now, climate scientists are nearly unanimous in recognizing climate change as both “real” (not part of a typical cyclic pattern) and largely of our own doing. Sticking fingers in ears and refusing to listen will not make the dangerous problem go away. As a longtime science educator, Dr. Matkins understands how science works and how to find the most trustworthy technical advice. Climate science doesn’t have to be her specialty for her to learn from such specialists, just as I learn from auto mechanics. She will not be stating “I am not a scientist” and trying to change the subject. Our children’s futures hang in the balance on this one: we cannot allow our leaders to stick their heads in the sand. On Nov. 5, please vote for the rational candidate, Juanita Jo Matkins. Doug Mock Manakin Sabot

continued from >9 scheduled for Oct. 21? Having little to go on, I went where everyone goes to find out about people; social media. I found a page that seemed to be filled with this candidate’s supporters, but they had little to say about him or his plan other than hashtags and pictures of bumper stickers outside of Goochland County; which seemed quite odd to me. However, they had quite a lot to say about this candidate’s opponent. I can’t repeat what I read because 1) you couldn’t print any of it in a family paper and 2)none of what was written can be verified. When people tried to ask simple questions about the candidate the people on this page support or try to defend his opponent, they were overwhelmed with a barrage of vulgar responses. The only race I have seen that has been this combative was in 2016. Researching all of this has led me to ask several questions. Does this candidate have his own voice, or does he have to be told what to think and do? How can a “good guy” condone

Matkins will not take ‘Big Pharma’ money Dear Editor: Healthcare is a concern for everyone, regardless of age, income, religion or politics. As a Goochland County resident, I have access to affordable health care but I know not everyone does. Drug price fluctuation is a fact of life (or death) causing many people undue stress and worry. Those with pre-existing conditions struggle to cope with an insecure future. How

Dear Editor: I write in support of Juanita Jo Matkins for District 56 House of Delegates seat. Here is why. Imagine that your car won’t start tomorrow morning. What to do? Jiggle the key, check gas gauge, cuss, maybe check the spark plugs? That’s my limit before I call in a trained mechanic for his/her specialized technical knowledge. Lacking essential knowledge, I appreciate those who have it. Now picture a politician being asked for action on climate change. Instead of admitting personal ignorance and seeking wise counsel to inform policy, many just stand before cameras and announce, “I am not a scientist!” as if that resolves the danger. Me? I’m not a mechanic, but I want my car to work. I also want our planet to work! Science is the best system humans have devised for finding out how nature operates. Being a human enterprise, it is imperfect, but it gets amazing results overall.
