After one of the most contentious races in recent memory, the battle to become Goochland’s next sheriff ended Nov. 5 with a decisive victory by current sheriff’s office sergeant Steven N. Creasey.
Creasey defeated opponent Levin White, also a career law enforcement officer, by a margin of 5,145 votes, capping off a campaign that had officially kicked off over a year ago. While a number of candidates this year ran unopposed — including incumbent Commonwealth’s Attorney D. Michael Caudill, Commissioner of Revenue Jennifer Brown, and Treasurer Pamela Duncan — several local races were hotly contested. In District 1, incumbent supervisor Susan F. Lascolette won a third term after defeating challenger Crystal NeilsonHall 7,962 to 2,817. District 2 also saw a reason-

GES now one step closer to new home Goochland is one step closer to having a new elementary school, after the county Planning Commission unanimously approved a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) that would allow construction of the proposed 92,000 square foot facility. The proposed 104-acre location at the intersection of Bulldog Way and Steeplechase Pkwy, located near the county’s high school and middle school complex, is already owned by the county and would be an appropriate location for the project, according to Tom Coleman, a principal planner with the county Planning Department.

Carlsen named Director of the Year at annual chiropractic convention Chiropractic Center of Richmond in Manakin-Sabot, Virginia. Carlsen has a strong commitment to making the UVCA stronger and relevant, as evidenced by his regular participation in recent strategic planning meetings and board orientation sessions. He has also taken a constructive critical eye to age-old standard operating procedures to help make them better and more in tune with the current healthcare and business environment. During the awards presentation, Dr. Will Sonak, UVCA District Director Liaison,
shared his thoughts on why Dr. Carlsen deserved this award. “Dr. Carlsen has transformed the Richmond area by getting chiropractors more active through district meetings and informal gatherings,” Sonak said. “Building chiropractic awareness in the Commonwealth starts with involved chiropractors,” Carlsen said. “Staying relevant and focused on key issues creates a win-win for all. I am honored to have received this recognition from my colleagues and it has been my pleasure to serve on the Board.”

school would not be expected to open until August of 2024. According to Goochland County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Raley, the new school will be expected to help alleviate overcrowding at the county’s three elementary schools, which are currently at over 100 percent capacity. It would also erase the need for the trailers now being
used at Byrd and Randolph Elementary schools, Raley said. The new school would hold around 650 students, Raley said, and a boundary line change would be required prior to opening in order to equally disperse students throughout the three elementary schools and bring populations down to around 85 percent capacity.

An end for reading as we know it? By Roslyn Ryan Editor
“New data from the federal government released this week shows that reading scores have dropped substantially in elementary and middle schools. The results of the test nicknamed the ‘nation’s report card’ confirm a problem that state testing has signaled for the past few years.” -From a Richmond Times-Dispatch article dated Nov. 3, 2019 Nov. 14, 2045
An Obituary for Reading
I
t is with deep sadness that we must share that Reading died this morning, after a long and courageous fight against illiteracy. Born around 4000 B.C., Reading had its roots in Mesopotamia and would go on to spend many happy and productive years in Athens, Greece, before venturing out into the wider world. Reading was enjoyed by billions, played a critical role in the creation of modern civilization as we know it, and leaves behind a deep, unfillable void. Throughout Reading’s long, illustrious life, it was employed in every field of study, and every profession.
Reading will be fondly remembered as a cherished teacher, mentor, and friend, one who had the power to make a day at the beach more enjoyable and plenty of long, otherwise dull journeys easier to bear. For millennia, (do you know how long a millennium is, Guy In The Back Using a LeatherBound Copy Of The Iliad to Prop Up His Mac Book?), Reading was a lifeline for countless individuals, from prisoners of war to prisoners of circumstance. “Once you learn to read you will be forever free,” said Frederick Douglass, who credited learning to read as the single greatest factor in his journey from slavery to being recognized as one of America’s preeminent orators. Unfortunately, the inescapable march of time was not entirely kind to Reading, and a semiforced retirement eventually seemed imminent (Not “eminent,” OK, Lady Over There Using A Rare First Edition of Gulliver’s Travels as a

Letters to the Editor Former sheriff’s office candidate thanks all supporters, refutes claim about finances Dear Editor, I write you and the citizens of Goochland County to cover what I feel are two important matters. First and foremost, I want to express my sincerest and humble gratitude for the support, encouragement and participation by Goochland residents in the election on November 5. During my campaign, I enjoyed the conversations in your homes, on front porches and in passing. Additionally, I want to thank the leadership and supporters from the Goochland Tea Party and Goochland Democratic Committee who saw common ground in our local election. To see this collaborative effort in support of my ideas and experience to be the Goochland Sheriff was a victory in its own merit. We as Goochlanders should all be proud to see this. Bringing people together with fundamentally different beliefs was truly satisfying. I also want to publicly congratulate Steven Creasey’s campaign for raising in excess of $70,000 in order to successfully win this Sheriff’s election. In another spirit, I want to address comments from last weeks letter to the editor by former Goochland County Treasurer, Pam Johnson. Ms.Johnson articulated my lack of integrity/fiscal responsibility due to multiple financial warrant in debt claims. I dont know why she felt a need to share only half of the story. In early 2000-2005, my wife and I became real estate investors accumulating more than 50 rental units as well as buying/building and converting properties into condominium communities to include securing historic tax credits by preserving history. During the 2008-2012 recession, every citizen of our great country suffered tremendous financial loss see Letters > page 7

the article and because she wanted to besmearch my reputation just days before the election, her words affected my entire family. Shame on any elected official (or former) using information gained in office for political/personal gain not to mention purposely providing the public with only half of the truth. In closing, Steven Creasey was elected Goochland Sheriff. I wish him well and I will continue to support, respect and assist the Goochland Sheriff’s Office 100 percent. I encourage all of my supporters to continue to embrace the efforts of our law enforcement officers in Goochland and I look forward to being more actively involved in our great community.
and so did we. We made tough financial decisions to prevent families that had lost their jobs with no means to pay their rent from becoming homeless. no problem for candidate in Hadensville”. As a resident of Hadensville it was refreshing to see Ms. Ryan pen a piece that showed the lighter side of an extremely long election season. Mr. Trice or who us residents like to refer to as “StuddyB” or “Mr. Mayor” is a true fixture in Hadensville and his ideals of “working hard, (but not too hard), celebrating local history and never missing an opportunity to turn a stranger into a new friend” are values that we should all emulate. In addition, I would like to second his comment that “people are just too tense these days” I am proud to say that I had one of his signs mysteriously show up in my front yard and when I discovered it, along with all the others posted all over Hadensville, I laughed all the way till election day. Don’t get me wrong, I will be glad when the political signs come down, but I for one am going to save the one that is in my front yard because I am sure Stu Trice will be running
for Mayor again in 2020. Again, thank you Ms. Ryan for your article in the Goochland Gazette and highlighting one of the individuals that I am proud to call my neighbor and why Hadensville is truly a blessed place to live. www.goochlandgazette.com approve of the obvious considerable thought Mr. Bachman gave to his ideas, I find several key problems with the process. The idea of essentially a Federal License for gun ownership fails to understand the difference between a right and a privilege. I would contend that rights are things that are inseparable from an individual’s humanity. They are part and parcel of one’s self. They are not dependant on the goodwill or labor of another to exist. If one considers the right of free speech, it is part and parcel of the individual. I would suggest that to require a licensing model would change the right to keep and bear arms (the right of self-defense) to a privilege. Once we go down the road of viewing a right as a privilege, a cascade of things become inevitable. First, the issuance can become subject to a variety of discriminatory influences. Costs can price less affluent citizens out of being able to avail themselves of the right. Political discrimination can
occur; personal animosities can enter into the equation, not to mention a hundred other reasons a person in power might choose to limit someone’s exercise of the 2nd amendment. Now, to address specific points. Having the ATF issue a license, the thought of having to deal with another cumbersome Federal Beurocarcy given the overall inefficiency of the federal government, in general, is less than appealing. There are approximately 100 million gun owners in the United States, requiring a license seems like quite an undertaking. While I appreciate being grandfathered in with my currently owned firearms, the restriction to using or carrying only on my private property is a problem. I live in Goochland and have some acreage, but I previously lived in a row house in the city — might be a bit difficult to shoot in that environment. The ATF instructor suggestion is one that we would have see Correspondence > 18
Simply Christian
Romans 16:16 “Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you.” Have you ever noticed scripture’s historical record of the church? The differences between the simplicity of the church there as compared to your denomination are important. Congregations self-governed without an earthly headquarters. Congregations proclaimed the gospel and were made up of people who did as “…many of the Corinthians when they heard were believing and being baptized.” (Acts 18:8) Let’s speak where the Bible speaks and be silent where it is silent. Churches of Christ have been here for two millennia. Check us out.

If water is already lacking within the plant due to an abnormally dry autumn, then needles and leaves may die as water is lost during harsh, winter wind conditions. Most evergreens have shallow root systems and are the first to exhibit signs of stress. These signs include drooping needles or leaves. If drought conditions continue needle tips will turn brown (scorch) and branch tips will show needle drop followed by death of the tree. Premature fall needle coloration may also be symptomatic of drought injury. “Knowing when to water and how much can be tricky, says Wilkerson. “Investigate the soil conditions by digging down a few inches and checking the root ball of the tree or shrub in question. County schools honored for focus on innovation Superintendent says teamwork helped earn five Apple awards Contributed report
Goochland County Public Schools (GCPS) recently announced that all five of the county’s schools have been recognized as Apple Distinguished Schools for 2019-2021. Schools receiving this designation have an established one-to-one program, distin-
guished by innovative use of technology in the hands of students to promote engaging learning experiences. Distinguished schools have faculty that demonstrate proficiency with technology, and school leaders articulate a vision for how technology can promote student success, with results toward established instructional goals. “More than anything else, this recognizes the hard work and dedication of our teachers, our administrators, our technology department, and our school board to provide
the support students need for their future work and civic engagement,” said GCPS Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Raley. All five schools created teams during the 2018-19 school year to author original multitouch, multimedia books that showcase their journey with 1:1 devices in the hands of students. These books became part of the application process to be recognized as an Apple Distinguished School. (To see a preview of these books, visit the school division’s instructional technology

GoochlandCares, one of the county’s most impactful nonprofit organizations, has given plenty of residents a reason to smile over the past year. Now, as the holidays approach, they are hoping those who are able will return the favor. Now through the holiday season, Amazon.com is supporting many charitable organizations including GoochlandCares through its online AmazonSmile Shopping Center. For anyone who shops online at http://smile.amazon. com/ch/54-1967650, Amazon. com will donate 0.5 percent of the price of each eligible AmazonSmile purchase to GoochlandCares. “Amazon is offering a con-
venient way for you to help your Goochland neighbors in need during the holidays without leaving your home,” said Sally Graham, Executive Director of GoochlandCares. “This is a great opportunity to do holiday shopping while at the same time giving back in our community.” Another way to give back is on #GivingTuesday on Dec. 3, 2019. #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. This is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Finally, community members are encouraged to attend the annual Jingle Bell Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on

Goochland volleyball is heading to states! By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
G
OOCHLAND – You know that point in the sports movies where the players get so excited about finally conquering something? That’s how senior Ellie Spencer felt after her team’s regional semifinal match on Nov. 7. She and her fellow seniors, who were part of elevating Goochland Volleyball to the 2017 state semifinals, will get another chance to battle for that ultimate title, as they and their teammates secured a 2019 state tournament berth in straight sets over William Monroe (25-17, 25-17, 25-20). “This is something they’ve wanted since preseason,” said Goochland head coach Rachel Jacobsen. “We talked back in August about: ‘What are our goals for the season?’ And all of them said: ‘Make it to states.’ I’m sure they’re over-themoon about this, and they worked really hard for it.” “It’s definitely exciting – it was really sad to end short that year (in 2017), and especially ending short last year, too (in the region semifinals),” said senior Mary King, who launched 7 kills and smashed the match point to the opponents’ floor. “It’s exciting to at least get back in the state tournament and feel what it’s like to play again, except as seniors.” “It feels amazing to be able to be part of this and know that we’re seniors and that we give it our all every year, but this year we’re connected truly well,” said senior Trinity Wonderling, who in addition to setting well with 9 assists slammed a kill through traffic to set up match point. “This is what everyone dreams of when they’re playing their last year of volleyball,” said senior Ilaria Russell. “They want to make it all the way – and that’s what I hope we do.” It’s Goochland’s second time reaching states since winning the championship in 2015 – and the first time under Jacobsen in her second year at the helm. “It’s super-exciting – I knew they could do it; I just was waiting for them to show us they could,” Jacobsen said. “I’m excited to be moving on and moving up

and ready to see what they can do next.” The Bulldogs also entered the Region 3B final still unbeaten in regular-season and postseason matches, losing just two sets in a 20-0 stretch ahead of their match with Independence. The Dragons on Thursday came out on fire in every set, battling Goochland toe-to-toe to tie the home team up to the
12th point in the first two stanzas and all the way up to 18-all in the third. But every time, the Bulldogs seemed to find an extra gear. “Most of volleyball is a mental game, so it’s just a matter of staying focused, being ready for the next play and, when things aren’t going our way, just moving on to the next – it’s always the next
point,” Jacobsen said. “They did a really good job of staying in it and keeping their heads on straight.” In addition to making its early thirdset rally, Goochland also had to battle out of a 9-5 deficit in the second, tying the Dragons at 9-all with speedy sophomore Blair Bussells serving, and then matching the Dragons point-for-point to tie again
at 12-all. That’s when it happened. A wild, chaotic and brilliant rally unfolded as players on both sides of the net made quick defensive touches to keep the ball afloat. William Monroe players maneuvered wide of the net to make timely returns and Goochland’s Taylor Michaels hit the ground on a huge save. It ended in an exclamation mark as Mary King rose up and slammed the ball to the corner, slicing it across the ground to lift Goochland ahead at 13-12. For King, it was definitely exciting to find a spot on the floor that was open and cut it there after the Dragons defended at least three of her hits earlier in the game. Her teammates Spencer (24 digs), Bussells (4 assists, 11 digs) and Michaels were all diving and tumbling across the floor to keep the ball in the air and extend rallies. “It’s adrenaline,” Spencer said, adding how “there’s a special feeling” you get “when you pass it perfect.” Goochland’s freshmen also delivered in the clutch, as Nicole Brown defended well at the net and Nina Smith (7 kills) crushed four attacks to help catapult the Bulldogs out of a 1-5 third-set hole and into a 7-6 advantage. Hard-hitting sophomore Nova Wonderling also delivered timely strikes for points. The Bulldogs weren’t afraid to rotate their players, as everyone on Goochland’s side of the court was able to do damage. “Their communication was on point tonight,” Jacobsen said of her players. “Nothing sort of went to the same place twice…[the Dragons’] right side had a really good line shot – we don’t see that very often – and they did a really great job of coming in and covering that. We were everywhere…I was excited that they were getting there.” Russell was among Goochland’s players to absorb the big hits when they came flying across the net off of the Dragons’ fierce attack. “I was telling her: Her little Spidey senses were tingling – she knew when it was in, she knew when it was out, and she was ready for it,” Jacobsen said of Russell. “She did a really great job

Goochland facing unfamiliar foe in playoffs By Jim Ridolphi, For the Goochland Gazette
Playing post-season football in November is nothing new for the Goochland Bulldogs. But there is a known unknown factor accompanying this year’s playoff endeavor as the Bulldogs make their initial appearance in the Region 3B tournament. “In many ways this is an interesting year for us, and now entering the playoffs it becomes more interesting,” Goochland coach Alex Fruth said earlier this week. “We don’t have a history playing these schools, outside of Central Woodstock and William Monroe.” The coach said it’s untested, but not unknown, waters for the Bulldogs. “We don’t share any common opponents,” Fruth said. “In many ways this will be a chance for us to enter into unfamiliar territory, but we have had chances to experience this a couple times this year.” The Bulldogs enter postseason play with a squad that began the season on unfamiliar ground with a loss to pow-
Volleyball continued from >10 tonight.” And just as she did Tuesday, Russell once again factored into helping her team keep the opponents off-balance with a sharp serve. “When I go back and serve, I always try to relax and I’m calm and I’m just like, ‘I’m just gonna serve it, and I’m gonna get them,’” Russell said. “That’s just my mentality…” Trinity’s serve also caught fire as the match progressed, becoming harder and harder for the opponents to intercept. She totaled 5 service aces on the evening. Trinity also delivered consistency throughout the match and especially down the stretch in putting the ball in place for her hitters on short-distance sets – which, she noted, are hard sets to make. “And it’s hard to communicate when you have to go that fast,” Trinity
erhouse Lafayette, a former Class 4 contender moving down to Class 3 football. That loss propelled this group of Bulldogs to embark on a mission to finish the remainder of the season without a loss. Those efforts produced results. Sophomore quarterback CJ Towles matured with each game, and a constantly improving passing game could provide a valuable edge in postseason play. Towles is just one of the weapons featured on the offensive side of the ball. It’s a group effort according to Fruth. “We can go in and out of formations, personal groupings, and really try to place the guys in positions to be successful,” he said. The coach said the defense is also living up to expectations and continuing a tradition that is an important element of past successes. “This year’s defense has continued a pretty good run of defensive groups that get after people,” Fruth said. This year’s version is traditionally tough, but also flexible. “We have found that we can also be said. “But some hitters and setters have chemistry and I feel like that helps a lot when you know each other really well.” Senior Rachel Carter praised the energy that the players bring to Goochland’s team, and keeping up that energy – the seniors noted – is among the team’s key goals going into the next rounds of the postseason. “If we get down, that’s when we’re gonna lose,” Russell said, “and we’re not gonna get down, so we’re not gonna lose.” Goochland made it to the Region 3B semifinals by defeating CentralWoodstock in straight sets (25-8, 25-15, 25-13) in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Trinity Wonderling had 10 kills and 12 assists, Nova Wonderling made 9 kills, Mary King delivered 6 kills, Blair Bussells had 15 assists, Ellie Spencer made 17 digs and Taylor Michaels showcased her versatility across offense and defense, making 4 kills and 7 digs Michaels pointed to

multiple on defense in order to meet the different challenges that we see within the James River District and our nondistrict schedule,” Fruth said. And it’s not just the starters on offense and defense who have contributed. “With the way these scores have gone
this year, our younger guys have had a chance to get a decent amount of Friday night reps. The butterflies of playing your first snap under the lights of Friday night is gone,” Fruth said. “All of this will pay dividends this year and next.” In addition, the defense has featured a variety of formations allowing players to gain experience at different positions. “We have also been able to move guys around and gain experience playing at different spots,” Fruth said, “which as the season continues gives us more experience and depth.” It all adds up to a sense of excitement and anticipation that only the post season can produce. It’s Senior Night this Friday when Independence meets the hosting Bulldogs, the top seed in Region 3B, in the first round of this year’s playoffs on Nov. 15, 2019 (7 p.m.) at Goochland High School. “This group of seniors - and really the entire team - have worked hard to gel as a team,” Fruth said. In spite of challenges, the team kept its eye on the prize, according to the coach.
“With moving guys around to new spots, seniors [have had] to step up and accept new rolls, and all along we haven’t had to deal with egos,” Fruth said. “These guys want to win and realize it takes a team to make things work. We are excited to see how we progress into the postseason.” The Bulldogs played only three home games this season, partially due to scheduling conflicts and a late-season forfeit by Bluestone on Friday, Nov. 8. Fruth said that makes coming home for the playoffs even more special. “We have had only three home games which really has been frustrating, so it’s exciting for these guys to know that we will have the chance to play at home for the playoffs,” he said. Fruth said he hopes visiting teams will be greeted by something Goochland fans have consistently provided — vocal, loyal and consistent support. “Now, we need our side of the stands to be large, loud, and into each of the following games,” Fruth said. “These schools are going to be traveling into a new environment; let’s give them a great introduction to Bulldog football.”
the chemistry she and her longtime teammates have built up together. “We’ve been playing with each other for so many years that I think it just comes naturally to us now,” Michaels said after the quarterfinals match on Nov. 5. “We just know where everyone’s gonna be, so we know when to cover and when not to cover.” Before the Bulldogs began state tournament play, they played Independence in the Region 3B championship match, which was slated to be played after press time on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The match, if played, determined whether Goochland would host its state quarterfinals match or play the round on the road against the Region 3A champion on Saturday, Nov. 16. “Either way, win or lose, it’s gonna prepare us,” Jacobsen said. “We’ll be ready for whatever comes next, we’ll get to see some really great competition – we already have – so it’ll be great Nick Vandeloecht/Goochland Gazette going forward.” Goochland’s Nova Wonderling (2) hammers the ball across the net for an She added of her Bulldogs: “They’re attempted kill in the Bulldogs’ Region 3B quarterfinals home match versus ready for anything.” Central-Woodstock on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019.

Cadets storm into state final By Billy Fellin For the Goochland Gazette
Ryan Hunt/For the Goochland Gazette
St. Catherine’s Claire Ellis (Goochland) digs the ball in the VISAA state final against Flint Hill in Roanoke on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019.
State runners-up By Jacob Downer For the Goochland Gazette
ROANOKE Saint Catherine’s volleyball team knew it was up against a tall order in facing top-seeded Flint Hill in the VISAA Division 1 state championship match on Saturday afternoon at Roanoke Catholic. The Huskies (30-1) entered the match as the twotime defending state champions and outside of their one loss had not dropped a single set in any other match, including in their 2-0 victory over the Saints back in September. The Saints, however, were not to be intimidated as they took a thrilling first set with a 26-24 win. But ultimately, Flint Hill’s superior size began to take control and the Huskies won the final three sets to claim their third straight title (24-26, 25-9, 25-19, 25-22). Saints head coach Skip Weston said he was proud of his team’s effort against what was widely considered a heavily-favored opponent. “[Flint Hill] has had a great season and we knew it would be difficult with how much size they have,” Weston said. “Our goal was to win one set, which we did right away, and then we
just kept battling.” The seniors graduating from this year’s squad were all freshmen when Weston first took the job. “At least four of the girls have been with me all four years here, “ he said. “We’ve taken baby steps from the first year up until the state finals today, and I’m just pleased that I had the opportunity to coach them. They’re a special group.” Senior Libero Claire Ellis (Goochland) spoke to how she enjoyed getting to be part of the team as it progressed and improved each of her four seasons. Ellis had 15 digs and an ace in the championship match. “We’re really tight-knit,” Ellis said. “It’s been so nice to be able to come to practice with this team after a bad day at school because we truly are like a family.” The Saints, seeded no. 2 in the VISAA Division I state tournament, reached the final by defeating no. 7 Norfolk Academy (25-20, 25-11, 25-15) in the quarterfinals and no. 3 Bishop O’Connell (25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 25-15) in the semifinals. Ellis had 1 ace and 13 digs against Norfolk Academy and 1 kill, 1 ace, 2 assists and 26 digs against Bishop O’Connell.
GOOCHLAND - Returning from injury, Benedictine quarterback Jay Woolfolk engineered five touchdowns to lead the Cadets on past Trinity Episcopal 56-28 and into the VISAA state championship game. “We’ve had three good weeks of practice,” Benedictine coach Greg Lilly said. “We knew the kids were well prepared. I wasn’t surprised by the effort and wasn’t surprised by how well our kids played. We’re grateful to beat a really good team in Trinity.” Following Trinity quarterback Jack Toscano’s 56-yard bomb to Trai Ferguson to give the Titans the first lead of the game on the opening drive, the Cadets pulled a trick from their bag, with an end-around pass from Nick Turner to Leon Haughton for 63 yards and a very quick 7-7 score. Turner made waves again just three plays following his touchdown toss with an interception on defense to give possession right back to the Cadets. “I was just back-pedaling, pedaling my butt off, and the ball came over and I just knew it was mine,” he said. “I played it like a receiver, honestly.” Turner had four catches for 112 yards and the touchdown throw on offense, along with an interception on defense. His interception set up a 33-yard touchdown run by Woolfolk on fourth down to make it 14-7 Cadets. The next two possessions would prove costly for the Titans as they had golden opportunities that slipped away. After the score, Trinity’s Blake Keller returned a kickoff 70 yards to the Cadets 20-yardline. But Trinity went fourand-out. After a Benedictine

three-and-out, the snap was fumbled on the ensuing punt and Trinity got the ball at the 6-yard-line. But two plays later, Benedictine’s Christian Dunn picked off Toscano and returned it 64 yards to quickly flip the field. Woolfolk took it from there, throwing a 53-yard touchdown pass to Dillon Tennyson, followed by a 12-yard strike to Turner for a 28-7 lead over the Titans. He would add a 1-yard touchdown run and a 48-yard touchdown toss to Turner to his stat sheet before game’s end. Woolfolk, who has been injured this season, accounted for 199 passing yards and 76 rushing yards for the Cadets. “It was good to get him back,” Lilly said. “He practiced with us last week and was able to do some things and this week had a good week of practice. We felt like we could do everything we normally could with Jay.” Benedictine’s David Ngendakuriyo and Anthony

Fisher also scored for the Cadets. Trinity offensive lineman Sam Singleton recovered a fumbled snap in the end zone for a Titans touchdown, Jalen Smith scored on a 1-yard touchdown run and Shawn Riley scored on a 10-yard catch
from Toscano. Benedictine will face St. Christopher’s next Saturday in the state championship game. Turner said that he’s excited for the chance at a title. “We have three objectives: finish, finish, finish,” he said. “Next week, we want to finish.”

tively stand up against this nonsense. Placing too much faith in government to be altruistic and never do anything that is not in the best interest of the people is a dangerous policy to follow. We already have too many faceless unelected bureaucrats writing rules and impacting our lives. I choose to be responsible for my selfdefense because that is my responsibility. None of the suggestions for licensing will have any impact on the rare instances of mass shootings that occur. A more likely successful strategy would be to do away with gun-free zones and refocus on mental health and the current state of the family. Mr. Bachman’s contention that “Proper Licensing would protect all citizens from irresponsible gun owners, would protect the right of responsible
gun owners to keep and bear arms, and would help the gun industry to prosper in an environment of maximum safety” is overly optimistic. It is simply the obliteration of a right and the conversion to privilege. I prefer as Patrick Henry said, “ Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone that approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are inevitably ruined.” None of the proposals in his column protect our liberty and our rights; instead, we lose them bit by bit until they are vanquished never to be restored. I am not willing to pass that legacy on to the next generations.
continued from >7 to build from scratch, at considerable time and expense. These instructors would have the sole power of approval. Then a layer is added by bringing in the local Sherriff or police who would fingerprint and take a DNA sample. I, for one, would have a problem giving a DNA sample to the police in this instance. Given the vast potential for abuse of this data, if compromised, this is a nonstarter. The fingerprints fall into the same privacy concern even though I have given fingerprints to work in certain industries in the past. That was to exercise the privilege of working in that industry, however, and was voluntary and not compelled. Both of these steps are not inexpensive. Next, a
