BOS offers support, no ‘sanctuary’ In resolution, supervisors stop short of saying residents won’t have to follow gun laws By Roslyn Ryan Editor
As word began to circulate last week that Goochland had joined the growing list of localities across the state declaring Second Amendment Sanctuary status, few were likely surprised that the county’s board members would have made such a decision. After all, Goochland’s current board members are all committed conservatives, and local pressure to embrace the “2A Sanctuary” label, as ALVAREZ evidenced by the standing-room-only crowd that attended last week’s board meeting, had been intense. The only issue? It wasn’t true. see Sanctuary > 3

BOS reiterates commitment to Second Amendment protection (Editor’s Note: The following is the preamble to the Goochland Board of Supervisors’ resolution underlining its commitment to protecting the Second Amendment rights of county residents. It is followed by the resolution itself, which was presented during the Board’s Dec. 3 meeting.) he Goochland County Board of Supervisors has received significant input from citizens expressing serious concerns about potential Gun Control legislation that may be enacted by the 2020 General Assembly session. This Statement is intended to respond to those citizen concerns. In Goochland County we believe in the rule of law and support the US Constitution including the Bill of Rights and the Second Amendment. Each
member of the Goochland County Board of Supervisors has taken an oath to “support the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia”. The Goochland County Board takes the oath of office seriously and actively works to protect all rights guaranteed by both constitutions, including the right for law-abiding citizens to bear arms. The Goochland County Board of Supervisors writes laws for the county to the extent authority has been specifically granted by the General Assembly. We have limited authority to pass laws, but we fully use our authority to protect and defend the rights of our citizens. The Board of Supervisors is neither a law enforcement
entity, nor responsible for prosecutions. Law enforcement in the county is entrusted to the Sheriff, who is separately elected by the citizens of this county. Prosecutions are handled by the Commonwealth’s Attorney, who is also separately elected by the citizens. Finally, the Board of Supervisors has no judicial authority. Interpretation and determination of the constitutionality of laws is performed by the court system. This resolution affirms our support for the Second Amendment and sends a clear message to our legislators and all elected officials that we respect our citizens’ rights, all their rights, and that we stand with the other Virginia localities that have similarly voted to affirm their support for citizens’ Second Amendment rights.
Resolution
Sanctuary
Alvarez said, explaining that he was not comfortable with the idea of choosing to embrace certain laws and not others. In addition, Alvarez said, “I would not want a citizen to violate a law and think that we could protect them” when that is not the case. As Alvarez noted, the fight over Second Amendment rights is a particularly personal one for him. Having spent his early childhood in Cuba before fleeing with his family to the United States, Alvarez recalled the day the police came for his grandfather’s guns. “That day was the first time I saw tears in his eyes,” Alvarez said. “It is a moment that will stay with me forever.” To those in attendance, however, the battle seemed equally personal — and it didn’t take long for tempers to flare. “We are not asking you [to declare Goochland a Second
Amendment Sanctuary], we are telling you!” cried one member of the audience, prompting County Attorney Tara McGee to urge the group to maintain order or risk having the board clear the room. One woman shared the story of having to defend herself in her own home when several men attempted to break in. Had she not had a weapon, she insisted, the story could have ended in tragedy. Other speakers shared that they too had been victims of violence, and many spoke of the responsibility they felt to defend their families, a responsibility they felt would be hampered by the restrictions already being proposed. It was a scene that has played out repeatedly over the past several weeks in rural counties across Virginia. Powhatan voted last month 3-2 in favor of sanctuary status, joining at least 22 other Virginia localities that
have also done so. The designation has no legal bearing, which a number of speakers said they understood. What they wanted to do, they insisted, was to send a message. One by one, however, board members laid out the case for leaving the word “sanctuary” out of their response to legislators. District 5 supervisor Ken Peterson compared including the word to “putting up an umbrella when it’s raining bowling balls. It’s a great idea, but it offers almost no protection.” To Alvarez, the final wording of the resolution that the board approved will send the message that Goochland will oppose any and all efforts to restrict residents’ Second Amendment rights. “I believe this is a strong resolution,” said Alvarez, “and I believe it will carry a lot of weight.”
T
continued from >1 In fact, after over an hour of intense public comment, during which speaker after speaker implored the board to pledge that they would protect residents from overly restrictive gun control legislation feared to be coming when control of the General Assembly is handed over to Democrats next month, board members each took a turn to explain why they were not going to embrace the “sanctuary” label. As Board Chairman Manuel Alvarez explained, county leaders are prepared to fight “to the death” to ensure that residents’ Second Amendment rights are protected, but declaring the county a sanctuary would be “misleading” to residents and promise a level of protection the county cannot legally provide. “I have gone back and forth,”

Conscience (II) Ephesians 5:11-12
“Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret.” Like the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics in nature, unmaintained society goes from order to disorder. Unethical and immoral behaviors not even discussed openly a hundred years ago are now openly promoted by influential people in all walks of life seemingly without conscience. Paul said: “In view of this, I also do my best to maintain always a blameless conscience both before God and before men.” (Acts 24:16) Blessed are the pure in heart! “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.”

It is a labor of love, the couple says, though both admit it can be a bit heavy on the labor at times: David begins setting up the week after Halloween, and spends over a month painstakingly arranging the new items he has purchased alongside the old favorites. Life, as it does, can get in the way — health issues have thrown a kink in the set up timeline several times — and weather remains a deter-

Thankfully David’s mother came to the rescue with her sewing machine and miraculously managed to get St. Nick back up and running. It is lit daily from 5:15

They do insist, for safety, that visitors remain in their vehicles and do not walk in the yard. Children should keep an eye out for Santa, who has been known to frequent the DeHart’s yard and hand out candy canes from time to time. The home is located at 2375 Rockville Rd, Rockville, Va. 23146.

Board did not miss mark on 2A decision By Roslyn Ryan Editor
T
he idea that it takes courage to be a good leader is nothing new. What that looks like in practice, however, may not always be what we expect. Last week, for Goochland County’s Board of Supervisors, courage meant sitting before a room full of passionate, energized — and, in a few cases, quite angry — residents and telling them precisely what they did not want to hear. In politely but firmly insisting that Goochland would not, as a number of other localities in Virginia have recently done, declare itself a Second Amendment Sanctuary, the board members instantly drew the ire of a significant number of those attending the Dec. 3 board meeting. They were accused (in a slightly more colorful and less printable way) of protecting their own self interest. They were scoffed at and jeered. And yet they did not waiver.
It is important to make one point clear: This was not a case of two sides being diametrically opposed. Each and every board member has come out as a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. Two served in the military. Several are National Rifle Association members. One fled Communism with his family as a young man and has openly discussed witnessing the government confiscating his grandfather’s weapons. Simply put, by refusing to use the word “sanctuary,” these board members were not summoning the courage of their convictions to face down an ideological opponent — they were placing themselves in the crosshairs of the very people who elected them. We are living in a time when those we elect to lead us— on both sides of the aisle — often seem to be reading from a script aimed at pleasing the most people in any given room, with far less attention paid to their moral obligation. And time and time again, we let them get away with it because of the “R” or “D” that
follows their name. We think we know what leadership looks like. We celebrate the founders who ignited a revolution and prevailed over tyranny so that, a few hundred years later, we could carry forth their example in ways big and small all over this great nation. And yet, to this writer, if board chairman Manuel Alvarez had stood up on the dais, rent his garments and summoned forth the specter of Patrick Henry himself, it would not have felt quite as revolutionary as what the board actually did. Instead of offering the far more palatable and reassuring – yet ultimately hollow — decree that some in attendance demanded, the board instead erred on the side of reality. Say what you like about the semantics of Second Amendment Sanctuary designations. Goochland is fortunate to have the kind of leadership it does.

I always feel a hint of melancholy as a high school football season ends, especially when the final game falls just short of the ultimate goal of a state championship. If you think that sounds like the feelings of a sideline photographer/ reporter who has been treated to an abundance of victories and just a handful of disappointments during nearly two decades of covering Goochland football, you’d be correct. Admittedly spoiled by consistent and consecutive extended postseason performances by the Bulldogs, this season seemed different when I travelled to Williamsburg to cover the first game. I made the trip days after cataract surgery and wasn’t sure how I’d perform, and things were decidedly out of focus for the first minutes of the contest. Similarly, it was unclear how the Bulldogs would handle their first Class 3 opponent. It was obvious that Goochland had again gathered a group of talented athletes, and, led by a dozen and a half or so seniors, the team’s potential was evident. But playing up in Class 3 football was new territory and the Bulldogs fell short in their opener. Sure, the loss was disappointing, but also provided a glimpse of what this year’s version of a tried and true style of football could achieve. The early season challenges continued at Buckingham, and the Bulldogs escaped Dillwyn with a tough win, and an attitude emerged from a group of players who refused to lose and committed to get better each week. see Memories > page 7

Local resident’s design for ’21 VMI class ring unveiled Contributed report
An on-and-off tradition and a celebrated milestone of Virginia Military Institute (VMI) cadetship since the early 20th century, the receiving of class rings is almost always the highlight of a 2nd Class cadet’s acaBLAKE demic year. What’s more, the VMI class ring is easily identifiable simply by its design and size.
Memories continued from >6 By midseason, even the naysayers knew Goochland was attaining powerhouse status, making short work of most of their opponents. For me, I was convinced after a trip to Greene County where the Bulldogs faced Blue Ridge in what must be one of the most beautiful settings for a high school football game imaginable. They made a statement in that idyllic setting. As the weeks progressed, the Bulldogs were reaching a late season level that convinced all who were close enough to notice that this team had the character and commitment to exceed all expectations for a team making its first appearance in Class 3 football postseason play. They left no doubt in the first round of the playoffs, dominated a tough opponent in round two, and won a regional championship on their third outing. What remained was a trip down Interstate 95 to take
But there’s another way that the VMI ring stands out from those at other colleges and universities: it is cadet designed. Each year, a 2nd Class cadet or group of cadets designs the rings that they and other members of their class will wear for the rest of their lives. Having the honor of designing the ring for the Class of 2021, which celebrated its Ring Figure with a formal ceremony in Cameron Hall and the Ring Figure ball on Nov. 22, is Smith Blake ’21, a history major from Manakin-Sabot. Blake didn’t get the job
of ring designer by accident. He applied for it last fall, in October 2018, just after an email about Ring Figure came out. “I like history, said Blake. “I’ve always been an artist. I got the job the next day, I believe. Once the job was his, Blake went to work immediately, recruiting Paige Miller ’21 as his assistant and spending much time in the VMI archives in Preston Library researching dyke lines and class ring designs.
on what many described as an invincible opponent in Hopewell. Some of the predictions were gloomy. The prognosticators made the mistake of shortchanging and discounting the character of this team and its coaching staff. They didn’t realize what some described as luck or breaks were situations created by a tenacious group of Bulldogs that graciously accepted those miscues and promptly turned them in to touchdowns. That’s not luck, my friend, that’s talent. So, I was surprised to read one account of Saturday’s game that referred to Goochland’s first half domination of the Blue Devils as a series of bad breaks for the home team, and more a case of good luck for the visiting Bulldogs. I didn’t see it that way. I saw a team that removed all doubt as to whether they belonged and led a state championship team for most of the game, finally losing to an all star effort by a talented group of
Blue Devils. And, it’s not so much the loss that disappoints me. It’s that feeling of coming so close and what could have been for this group of deserving athletes, that sticks in the gut. They fought as hard as any group of Bulldogs I’ve covered to accomplish the results they achieved. In the end, reflecting on this season brought me to the realization that this team was special, a blend of experienced seniors and up-and-coming underclassmen and women who gelled to create a magical journey. Following the loss, Coach Alex Fruth told an emotional group of Bulldogs it was an honor to lead them this season, and reminded the team that this is not the toughest loss they’ll face as life progresses. He’s right. Sooner than they realize, the memories of this season will provide a sense of pride and accomplishment, and a snapshot of some of the happiest days of their lives will replace the disappointment

on the bus ride home from Hopewell. Fruth also thanked his seniors who have, in four seasons, played about five seasons
worth of football, achieved unparalleled success and continued a tradition of excellence for the Bulldogs. He reminded the return-
ing players of something that remains, even after a tough loss — the hope and redemption of next season. Do you believe?

Goochland ends season in state semifinals By Jim Ridolphi, Special Correspondent
“Nobody thought we’d get this far,” coach Alex Fruth told his team after a narrow 35-28 loss to Hopewell in the Class 3 state semifinals. “Don’t know if anyone in the state outside of our guys in the locker room thought we would accomplish what we did this year, and especially this last game,” Fruth said.“We are a solid team that never really let who we played dictate how we played.” The heavily favored Blue Devils (14-0), now looking for their second state title in three years, received that message early and often as Goochland (12-2) defied the odds and had them on their heels for most of the game. “I thought our team, our coaches and our fans gave the state a glimpse of what we know to be true: that Goochland football and its fan base are top notch,” Fruth said. Hopewell took the early lead on a drive that looked like a pattern that might repeat itself. But Goochland’s defense stiffened, and a usually dependable running game for the Blue Devils stalled. “Defensively those guys did a great job containing one of the top offenses in the state and obviously one of the best running backs potentially in the nation,” Fruth said, referring to Gatorade Virginia Football Player of the Year Trey Henderson. “Coach Summitt, Gibbs, Fitzgerald and Dohse really had a good plan for those guys.” Sophomore quarterback CJ Towles attacked the Blue Devils through the air as the second period began, with Kam Holman catching touchdown passes of 14 and 35 yards and setting up a third

Goochland’s CJ Towles (9) breaks loose for a first-half run in the Bulldogs’ Class 3 state semifinals game at Hopewell. The Blue Devils overtook Goochland late on a short rushing score from Trey Henderson to win 35-28 and advance to the Class 3 state final.
with a 45-yard reception. By halftime, a stunned Hopewell crowd was mostly silent as the Bulldogs left the field with a 21-7 lead and a defense that had recorded four turnovers in the first half of the action. Kindrick Braxton and De’Andre Robinson both had first half fumble recoveries; Braxton also made an interception. But with running backs like Henderson, Robert Briggs and Kaiveon Cox, it was only a matter of time before the Hopewell train got on the track. Henderson rolled-out an 81-yard run early in the third period to pull the Devils within one score, but a persistent Goochland offense answered,
utilizing a fake punt to maintain a drive, and scored a touchdown when Towles snuck the ball across the goalline, putting the Bulldogs up 28-14. Hopewell turned up the heat in the fourth quarter with a steady dose of the run game, depending on its bevy of backs that helped amass the team’s 13-0 record going into Saturday. When Henderson was briefly injured in the fourth quarter, Cox reeled off three consecutive first down runs to solidify a drive that again put the Blue Devils within one score. A mishandled kickoff and shanked punt were all the Blue Devils needed to punch their ticket to a state championship game at Liberty
University this weekend. Henderson delivered the final dagger with a two-yard scoring run that made the final 35-28. Goochland’s performance was no surprise for the people closest to the program including Fruth, who praised every aspect of the effort. “Special teams made plays that kept us in the game and took advantage of one situation after another,” Fruth said. “Coach Fitzgerald had a gutsy plan that we stuck to regardless of score. Our offense did a good job adjusting when things weren’t going well and made some big plays that weren’t really a part of our initial game plan. Our offensive line did a great job slowing down some really good defen-
sive linemen.” But it wasn’t the X’s and O’s of the loss that were foremost on his mind following the game. It turned to a dozenand-a-half seniors who were leaving the field for the final time in a Goochland uniform. “This senior class has left an incredible legacy for future teams,” Fruth said. “Their overall record on the field is impressive, but their time and dedication to this program has been outstanding.” It was a combination of players that resulted in the right chemistry. “Some of these guys have been a part of this program since they were middle school kids and worked as our ball boys,” Fruth said. “Others came in this season and made
an incredible impact on the team in a very short time.” Fruth noted the number of games these players have participated in, considering four years of post-season play. “Devin, Connor and Kindrick have played more games as starters then some kids play in their entire careers...this is a fun group also, which made it enjoyable throughout the season.” The seniors provided the leadership, but the remainder of the players provided a will to improve and win, according to Fruth. “We ask these guys to improve each and every week,” he said. “These guys took that message to heart and made it happen each week.” Fruth’s team answered any questions about its belonging in Class 3 with its performance at Hopewell last week, but the challenges remain as next year’s version of Goochland football begins to form. The coach said it’s never too early to begin the next mission. “Last year doesn’t matter, last year’s accomplishments are not ours,” he said. “We need to pick up where we left off, get in the weight room and start building the next edition of Goochland football. Don’t expect to be successful just because last year’s group was.” As Devin McCray exited the field for the final time following the loss on Saturday, he wasn’t thinking of the 52-5 record he compiled in his four years as a starter. Classy until the end, an emotional McCray wasn’t reliving his many accomplishments or record breaking performances. “I’m just proud of what my teammates and this team accomplished,” he said, “and how we played today, and this season.”

New 2019-20 season awaits Goochland boys By Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor
New challenges await Goochland boys basketball this season. Last year, the Bulldogs delivered a historical run in 2018-19 by winning a school-record 23 games, the James River District tournament championship and the Region 2A championship while also going on a 21-game win streak and reaching the program’s first-ever state semifinals. This year, they’ll be moving up to Class 3, and five major contributors to last season’s successes - Deion Harwood, JaMel Allen, DJ Harris, Isaiah Matovu and Perry SneadJohnson - graduated this past June. But several players who were also key to last year’s history-making season are back. Senior Quincy Snead and junior Karemon Holman were among the team’s leading scorers behind Harwood, and Goochland head boys basketball coach Preston Gordon expects returning sophomore JB Bell to be a dominant force at both ends of the court. “On the offensive end JB will be able to play inside and outside with his versatility. Defensively he is going to alter a lot of shots,” Gordon said. “He has really become more

comfortable with being aggressive.” Walker Murray, Kyin Carter and NyJavion Timberlake have also returned. Early in the season, the Bulldogs expect to rely on Murray and incoming junior Jack Hoffler’s guard play and shooting to extend the opponents’ defense. Gordon said they will have to rely more on
more players to shoot the ball consistently, attack teams offensively and defend better this year. “We will have more of a post presence, and have the opportunity to be more aggressive.” Juniors Hoffler and Reid Dameron and senior Khalil Holman, who took a year off last year due to an injury, all join the varsity team with 2 years of JV basketball experience. The team overall features several players who contributed to the football team’s strong run to the 2019 Class 3 state semifinals and very recently concluded their season on the gridiron. Gordon said that it typically takes their football guys a week or so to get their basketball legs under them and get back into the rhythm of the game on the hardwood. “I think the growth of our guard play from Quincy Snead and Kameron Holman will be important as the season progresses,” Gordon added. And with Snead being a four-year starter and Holman being a three-year starter, their experience, Gordon said, will be relied upon throughout the season. “As our team starts to gel with the chemistry of each other...we will start to add in some new wrinkles that teams have yet to see,” Gordon said. “Shooting consistently from outside the arc and the charity stripe will be areas that I
hope our team will improve on each week.” The Bulldogs hope to defend and rebound the ball well this season, and they will keep the basic defense that they’ve run for the past four-plus years while really focusing on the fundamentals. “Certain areas of the game have evolved and changed with boxing out and physical play,” Gordon said. “I expect our guards to be strong on the ball defenders, and our squad to communicate with one another to make sure they know someone has their help.” The coaches want to see growth from their players individually on and off the court. They want their team to have a sense of chemistry, so that when they play, the game comes naturally to everyone on the floor. “We want our players to trust in their teammates, as we do with our family,” Gordon said, adding: “We will see how the change from 2A to 3A will differ, but our guys want to be playing in March!” Their first game is slated for Friday at 7 p.m. at Amelia, and they host Prince Edward in their first home game on Tuesday, Dec. 17. “Come out and support your Bulldogs!” Gordon said. “This is going to be an exciting group of players to watch!”
Bulldogs get win in opening stretch of season By Rob Witham, Special Correspondent
ASHLAND - They have both leadership and experience. They have the tools to work on both sides of the floor. Goochland girls basketball has high hopes for the 2019-2020 season. Even though that season began with early adversity, they are merely opening chapters in a season-long novel. Chapter One saw Goochland battle last year’s top seed in Class 4, Region B on Dec. 3 at Patrick Henry. The Bulldogs took an early lead, fell behind, found their way back, but, in the end, couldn’t control the Patriots’ floor general, Logan Nuckols, and fell 57-47. “Usually, when we’re down like that, I just tell them: Don’t worry about the score,” Goochland coach
James Harris said. “Let’s just get it to 10 (points). When you get to 10, you have a chance.” After leading 15-13, Nuckols began to penetrate the Bulldogs’ defense. Back-to-back baskets early in the second quarter aided a Patrick Henry run that gave the Patriots a 31-20 lead at halftime. But Victoria Lopez, who led Goochland with 13 points, scored with 4:40 left in the third for the Bulldogs’ first points of the period, sparking a run that helped bring the deficit down to 10. Goochland did a good job defending Nuckols again in the third period, but going into the fourth, the deficit was still at 10 points. Enter Lilly Yutzey, who scored back-to-back buckets to trim the deficit to seven. Moments later, the margin was three. That’s when Nuckols went to work, scoring 10 of her 19 points in
the final three minutes, penetrating the Bulldogs’ defense to draw fouls, giving herself scoring opportunities at the line. Seven of those final 10 points came from the charity stripe. Gabby Ragone had 12 points and four assists for Goochland while Jalyn Burns added eight points. Emmy Paulin had six to go with five rebounds and a pair of assists. Harris wasn’t hesitant when asked how deep into his bench he could count on production this season. “All 12,” Harris exclaimed when asked about rotation. His confidence in his team’s defense is high as well. “A lot of our defensive schemes that we have, I throw out a lot of stuff (at opponents),” Harris said. “I hope it will catch a lot of teams off guard.” Paulin led the charge in Game Two Thursday night against

Fluvanna, scoring 19 points, but the Flucos were too much offensively in the second half, pulling away for a 64-51 win. Lopez earned a double-double with 12 points and 15
rebounds. Twenty-four hours later, Lopez produced again, this time with 14 points, 11 boards and 7 blocks as Goochland got its first win of the season: a 58-34 victory over Cumberland. Burns registered a double-double of her own with 13 points and 10 rebounds, as did Ragone, to the tune of 12 points and 10 assists. Paulin contributed 14 points in the victory. A quick look at early game statistics show the Bulldogs have the ability to do the things necessary for a successful season: score both inside and outside, rebound and play effective defense. As that defense matures, Goochland girls basketball will be poised for a big run. Goochland on Friday will host Amelia at 7 p.m. before taking a trip to Powhatan on Monday for a 7 p.m. matchup.

Wrestling season begins Swimmers dominate Staff Reports
To Goochland head wrestling coach Mike Nadder, Tuesday’s season opening tri meet at Patrick Henry High School went about as well as he expected, as the shorthanded Bulldogs - beginning the season without several wrestlers who are joining their ranks after the end of the football season - forfeited eight of their 14 weight classes but saw multiple wrestlers shine against Caroline in the tri meet. Riley Hite (138) also gave Goochland a silver lining in a 63-12 loss to tri host Patrick Henry when he pinned Justin Morgan in the first period. Jon Daly (170) received a forfeit, so he was really hyped to get on the mat against Caroline according to Coach Nadder. In the first period Daly “threw a vicious cross-face and into a hip throw and picked up a pin in 32 seconds.” Against Patrick Henry, Max Moreno (132) had a tough match that went the distance, and he lost 8-7. He bounced back against Caroline and picked up a pin in the sec-

ond period. Nadder felt that the Bulldogs wrestled Caroline tough, but with all the forfeits, they lost 60-18. Grant Heidel (138) bounced back from a loss in the first match and picked up a pin against Caroline County in the second period. He was down on points but never quit, his coach said. He scored a reversal late in the first period and went right into a near side cradle for a pin just as the period was ending. “That was a big boost for the team and a good win for him as well,” Nadder said of Heidel. “He is just a second-year wrestler. He worked very hard in the off-season and it’s paying off now.” The Bulldogs head back to
the wrestling room to work on getting better. They wrestled in a quad meet at Cosby High School that in addition to the hosting Titans included Midlothian and Matoaca. “All of the schools are much bigger than us and in higher divisions, but my kids will never back down to anyone,” Nadder said before the meet. “We know that we have to wrestle the best schools to prepare us for the postseason.” With the rest of his wrestlers arriving after finishing the football season, Nadder expects the outcomes of their matches to be much different. “We will just have to be patient,” he said.
Joe Hardman was charging. The Goochland swimmer had reeled in teammate Anneliese Rogerson within the final 50 yards on a blistering swim in the combined 400 freestyle relay. Rogerson denied the challenge, edging him out at the wall to give her relay team, which also included Anna Kate Wirsing, Abby Pillion and Bayleigh Allen, the overall victory in a thrilling final event, 4:23.69 to 4:25.00 to cap a dominant opening-meet team win for Goochland. “We had a great first meet!” said Goochland Swimming’s new head coach Ashton Paxton, noting how they faced “awesome competition” and how they look forward to continuing to improve and to doing great things in the future. The Bulldogs won 15 of 22 events in Friday’s opener, which included Powhatan, Louisa and a couple swimmers from Blessed Sacrament Huguenot. Goochland set the tone in both 200 medley relay races, as the boys (Richard Hardy, Garrett Eastwood, Hardman and Jack Clarke) passed Powhatan for the win on fourth-leg swimmer Clarke’s dive into the water (2:08.27). Rogerson overtook the leading Powhatan unit to set up her team (including Pillion, Sophie Summitt and Jessica Valdez) to grab the victory (2:10.96). McCaskill won the boys’ 200 freestyle (2:13.64) and Abby Pillion, swimming in later heats, won both the girls’ 200 (2:22.78) and 100 freestyles (1:05.44).

Hardman beat his only other opponent, teammate Gavin Hazelton (2:35.02 to 3:00.28), to take the boys’ 200 individual medley (IM). He was also the overall winner in the combined 100 fly (1:09.78). Rogerson dominated both the girls’ 200 IM (2:22.32) and 100 breaststroke (1:16.39). In the combined 500 freestyle featuring three swimmers, Skylar Dacey finished first overall (6:13.40) ahead of boys’ winner McCaskill (6:27.71). Dacey also won the girls’ 100 backstroke (1:14.97). Goochland’s Brandon Avram, Lucas Edwards, Clarke and McCaskill won the boys’ 200 freestyle relay (1:54.69) before Allen, Pillion, Wirsing and Rogerson won the combined 400 freestyle relay ahead of the boys’ winning team of Hardy, McCaskill, Hardman and Edwards. Paxton said she’s “really enjoying coaching and getting to know this fantastic team.” “I’m having fun getting to know each of the swimmers,” she said, “and it’s great to work with so many dedicated swimmers and their families.”
Manta Rays swim to wins at YMCA Holiday Classic By Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor
A relatively small Goochland Manta Rays unit earned 76 medals, including 22 golds, and took 7th out of the 12 programs that competed in Saturday’s YMCA Holiday Classic swim
meet at SwimRVA. “When it was all said and done, we only had 33 total swimmers,” said coach Helen Brown, noting that many of their swimmers are active in other extracurricular activities, and sometimes there is a conflict. “We also had some illnesses

This means swimmers are paying attention to details, always a good thing.” She added that 22 of the 33 swimmers swam their fastest times in at least one event. Ryan Johnson (boys’ 9-10) was the top overall swimmer in two events with AA division firstplace times of 1:18.99 in the 100 yard individual medley (IM) and 30 seconds-flat in the 50 freestyle.
Tyler Davis (boys’ 13-14) took first places in the A division of the 50 butterfly (29.54), the BB division of the 200 IM (2:39.35) and the B division of the 13-14 50 backstroke (33.10). Audrey Darden (girls’ 7-8) was the top swimmer in the 50 backstroke (44.54) and swam first in the A division of the 25 freestyle (18.01). Connor Davis (boys’ 11-12) was the top swimmer in the 200 freestyle (2:42.31) and took first in the C division of the 50 backstroke (39.81). Joe Hardman (boys’ 15-16)
took first places in the A divisions of the 100 IM (1:07.27) and 50 butterfly (29.09). Grace Kemmerly (girls’ 15-16) was the top swimmer in the 100 backstroke (1:12.15) and took first in the BB division of the 200 freestyle (2:32.06). Individual first places also went to Luke Pushinsky in the BB division of the boys’ 7-8 100 IM (1:54.93), Jessica Valdez in the BB division of the girls’ 15-16 100 freestyle (1:07.65), Caroline Darden in the B division of the girls’ 6 and under 50 freestyle (1:00.21), Luca

Benedictine’s Jay Woolfolk commits to UVA By Eric Kolenich, Times-Dispatch
Jay Woolfolk, a junior quarterback on the football team and pitcher on the baseball team, has made an oral commitment to the University of Virginia, where he has the opportunity to play both sports. Benedictine won Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association state titles this year both in football and baseball, and Woolfolk was at the heart of both teams’ victories. On the football team, he passed for 184 yards per game and rushed for 54 per game. On the baseball team, he posted a 6-0 record, a 2.81 ERA and struck out 58 batters in 37.1 innings pitched. He also closed-out the Cadets’ state final versus St. Christopher’s on the mound. A right-handed pitcher, Woolfolk was one of the area’s hardest throwing pitchers as a sophomore. His fastball regularly zips in the low 90s.
File photos/Goochland Gazette
Jay Woolfolk, a junior, was key to Benedictine winning state championships both in football and in baseball this year.
Woolfolk wants to play both sports in college, and UVA fit him best, said his father, Pete. Marshall and UMass also offered him, and Clemson, Penn State and Virginia Tech were among the
schools interested. His talent is rare, and Woolfolk has drawn comparisons to Russell Wilson, who played quarterback at Collegiate and was also a baseball star.
Virginia’s football staff offered him a scholarship following his freshman season, and the baseball team offered the following spring. “He’s the only kid we’ve had at Benedictine in my 15 years that has the ability to take over a football game, a basketball game and a baseball game,” Benedictine football coach Greg Lilly said. “He’s an elite athlete that lives to compete.” Though his father, Pete, was a basketball star at the University of Richmond, Jay chose to focus on football and baseball. His combination of abilities is almost unheard of, Benedictine baseball coach Sean Ryan said. “It’s really hard to play two sports in college these days for a lot of reasons,” Ryan said. “And to get a chance to do it at the level of Virginia, a top25 program in football and baseball, is even more rare.” While he is being considered as a college quarterback, Woolfolk said it’s not essential to him that he play the position in college. He would be
fine switching to receiver or defensive back if those positions work out better for him. What is a priority is playing both sports as long as he can. “I don’t ever want to limit my options,” he told the Richmond Times-Dispatch in the spring. Woolfolk missed most of his junior football season with a knee injury that he thought would cost him the entire season. But he returned in the playoffs and led Benedictine to a 14-6 win over St. Christopher’s in the state title game, when he threw for 155 yards and rushed for two touchdowns. In the five games he did play, he completed 65 percent of his passes, threw for 921 yards, 10 touchdowns and two interceptions. There is one factor that could keep Woolfolk from enrolling at Virginia – the Major League Baseball draft. Given his current pitching velocity, if Woolfolk continues to improve, he could be a high-round draft pick.

GOOCHLAND – With the end of a stellar season came several keynote postseason accolades. After winning 22 straight games, capturing the Class 3, Region B championship after getting moved up from Class 2 and reaching the state semifinals, the Goochland varsity girls volleyball team earned high honors across the James River District, Region 3B and Class 3 state levels. Seniors Mary King (middle) and Trinity Wonderling were both named to First Team All-District, First Team All-Region and Second Team All-State. Senior Libero Ellie Spencer was named to First Team All-Region, Second Team All-District and Second Team All-State. Rachel Jacobsen, who in just her second year at the helm led Goochland to a 22-1 record, a region championship and its second state semifinals appearance since 2015, was named the girls volleyball Coach of the Year both in Region 3B and in the James River District. Bluestone’s Emma Newcomb was named the James River District Player of the Year, Skyline senior middle hitter Aaliyah Chunn was named the Region 3B Player of the Year and Lord Botetourt senior Miette Veldman was named the Class 3 State Player of the Year. Ring continued from >7 The cadets came to the task armed with the knowledge that they had two surfaces, or sides of the ring, upon which to express their creativity: an Institute side, which represents VMI, and the class side, which is more unique to the class receiving the ring. On the Institute side, Blake had hoped to include “The Institute will be heard from today,” a phrase uttered by Gen. Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson at the Civil War battle of Chancellorsville, but it didn’t work out. “We couldn’t get that much [text], and we couldn’t get that intricate,” explained Blake. Instead, he wound up going with “Honor Above Self.” Above that phrase on the ring is a rendering of the cadet battery—cannons Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—as well as the head of the statue Virginia Mourning Her Dead. Below the phrase are representations of the two men most associated with VMI: Gen. George C. Marshall, VMI Class of 1901, and Jackson. Also on the Institute
side are the initials of the 10 cadets who died as a result of the Civil War battle of New Market on May 15, 1864. As they contemplated their ring design options, Blake and Miller knew that they wanted to tie into generations of Institute history by including their class’s dyke line, the relationship that runs on a three-year cycle between 1st Class cadets and 4th Class cadets. [Miller] and I have brainstormed together,” said Blake. “We’ve really tried to develop a ring that symbolizes not only our class but our dykes’ class as well.” Happily, Marshall turned out to be in their dyke line, so that made his inclusion on the Institute side of the ring an even more natural fit. On the class side of the ring is an eagle—symbolic of American liberty—as it is on almost every VMI class ring. But the eagle representations often vary, so the cadet ring designers incorporated the eagle features of the Classes of 1985 and 1991, both of which were in their class’s dyke line. “[Miller] and I worked together and we figured out a cool little way to slip in both years,” said Blake. “The design
Constitution and under Article I, Section 13 of the Virginia Constitution, and That the Goochland County Board of Supervisors hereby expresses its intent to uphold the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens of Goochland County, Virginia, and That the Goochland County Board of Supervisors hereby declares its intent to oppose any infringement on the right of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms using such legal means as may be expedient. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Goochland County Board of Supervisors requests that a copy of this resolution be provided to the General assembly members representing Goochland County and to the Governor of Virginia.
of the head as well as the wing spread — that comes from both of those years.” Also on the class side is the Latin motto from the VMI coat of arms, “Consilio et Animis,” or “By wisdom and courage,” along with the dates of the class’s matriculation and Breakout. Just as unique to the Class of 2021 are symbols of events during their rat year that class members will long remember. One, an iceberg, represents the coldest 20-mile rat-dyke march in recent memory, and the others — a sun, moon, and star — commemorates the solar and lunar eclipses that took place then. But there’s one feature on the class side that’s been used by nearly every class at VMI from 1848, when the first rings were presented, onward. Displayed vertically is the Hebrew word “Mizpah,” which is generally translated as “The Lord watch between me and thee when we are absent one from another.” As he worked through draft after draft, keeping some ideas and rejecting others, Blake drew on what he’d learned as a high schooler taking International Baccalaureate art classes at
Trinity Episcopal School. “In art, you can’t be perfect at everything,” said Blake. “Every time I made a ring draft, I would mess up and have to start over.” Having learned to take failure in stride, Blake was able to handle the frustrations that accompany the production of any creative work. “When I messed up, it wasn’t like, ‘Oh, I can’t do that anymore,’” he commented. “It was, ‘How can I do better, and how can I make it look even better?’” The entire process, from getting the job of ring designer to final approval by senior members of the Institute administration, took two and a half months. In early November, with approximately two weeks to go until the presentation of the rings, Blake could look back with satisfaction on a job well done. “It was a really fun process,” he stated. “It was a lot of work, getting everything approved and making sure we had everything we wanted on the ring, but in the end … I’m very proud of the ring.” Contributed by Mary Price
