Board gives new school green light By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Goochland County is one step closer to having its first new school in over 50 years, after county supervisors unanimously approved a Conditional Use Permit for the project on Dec. 3. While the design of the school is still in its early stages, information provided as part of the CUP application reveal that the new school is expected to be approximately 92,000 square feet, with the capacity to serve 650 students. Its scale, according to District 4 supervisor Bob Minnick, would make it one of the largest capital improvement projects undertaken in the county in recent memory, second only to the creation of the Tuckahoe Creek Service District. The new school, which will take the place of the current Goochland Elementary School 3150 River Road, will be located just west of Bulldog Way and directly across from the county’s connected high school and middle school complex. It is expected to open in August on 2024. see School > 3

Personal Responsibility Luke 8:15

“But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance.” A curious doctrine throughout Protestant Christendom proclaims all mankind to be depraved and “…utterly indisposed,...to all good,…” (The Presbyterian Confession of Faith). Yet Jesus said the seed is the word of God and is sown on different soils (hearts). A heart can be without understanding, or shallow, or preoccupied with life’s distractions (Luke 8:11-14). Or it can be honest and good! We are the soil we decide to be. It is not decided for us. That’s good news! How’s your heart?

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Were we once this strange? Uh, yeah

A

quick word to anyone over the age of 30: If you’re going to cluck disapprovingly over the way today’s generation of young people behave, you might be wise to keep your opinions to yourself. And you don’t have to take my word for it — just ask Bette Midler. It was Midler, after all, who ran afoul of the Twittersphere last week when she posted a photo of three young girls sitting on a bench in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, their backs turned to a stunning 18th century masterwork and their faces softly lit by the phone screens they were peering into. “What s wrong with this picture?” Midler asked, to which many people wasted little time in responding that there was nothing wrong with it at all. Quite a few, in fact, took Midler to task for the comment and suggested she apologize. In defense of the Divine Miss M, it’s easy to see why the photo may have struck a nerve for people of a certain age (this writer included). And anyone who grew up before cell phones could be forgiven for being baffled at how easy it is for some young people to tune out the world around them, even when in the presence of work by some of

history’s most celebrated artists. The kerfuffle over Midler’s transgression, however, didn’t seem so much about simply making a tone deaf remark. No, by taking a pot-shot at a group of young women seemingly doing something fairly harmless, Midler appears to have committed a different kind of offense: she was lazy. I say “lazy,” because it certainly isn’t difficult these days to find something to pick on young people about. From the vantage point of a person a few decades further along, there’s plenty of low hanging fruit: they dress funny. Their music is beyond strange. They take too many selfies and don t seem to respect authority. Of course, in lobbing any of these critiques, it might be wise not to leave out what our parents almost certainly thought about our hair, clothes, music and lifestyle choices. The fact that Midler’s comment came this month, as millions of Americans travel to visit family and multiple generations find themselves seated together around the table, may serve as a well-timed reminder to any of us tempted to opine that today’s young people simply don’t measure up. No, I admit it: much of what

I hear kids talk about today seems strange, and sometimes even uncomfortable. Clearly social norms concerning what s public and what s private have shifted seismically in the last 20 years, and some of us haven t quite caught up. But it’s far easier to poke fun, to roll our eyes, and to scoff at what we often too quickly dismiss as the shortcomings of younger people. Instead, why not give them the benefit

of the doubt every once in a while? Why not ask what they’re listening to? Why not try to figure out what’s important to them? No, I’m probably not going to be caught dead with fuchsia hair, or ever understand why Snap Chat is a thing. But if I’m going to insist that today’s youth treat me with respect, I can certainly see the wisdom in respecting them too.

Searching for that special holiday spirit? It’s closer than you may think By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

The lady slowly stirred the gooey mixture bubbling in a pan on her stovetop, and an almost instant blast of sweet-smelling goodness filled her tiny kitchen. I inquired not what the mixture was or would become, but, instead asked what ingredients comprised the aromatically-pleasing blend. She explained it wasn’t a recipe, verbatim, but a Christmas tradition she learned from her grandmother to make the house smell like the holidays. She explained the blend of brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon sticks and a small amount of apple cider placed on low heat can provide hours of holiday aroma therapy. “My kids love the smell. They say it gets them in the Christmas spirit,” she smiled as she swirled the concoction and lowered the heat to a flicker. On my way home, the thought of Christmas spirit seemed distant, and I wondered just what triggers that special and unique feeling that lifts one’s spirits and provides a once a year unmatched feeling of glee and goodwill. Could it possibly be attained by just combining a few spices and setting out a few figurines on pineroped counters? Or is it a combination of several factors that only intersect during the holidays, a perfect storm scenario that evokes a sense of euphoria in children, young and old. I remember visiting my grandmother’s house in Maryland weeks before Christmas and marveling at the production line cooking-maksee Holiday spirit > page 7

Local theater’s ‘Redneck’ Christmas opens Thursday Contributed report

What if the three wise men weren’t really all that wise? What if they were just three ordinary guys, avoiding conflicts at home, who happened upon the greatest story ever told? Starting Thursday, Dec. 19, Goochland Community Theatre will present a three-night run of “A Good,

Old Fashioned, Redneck Country Christmas,” a play by Kris Bauske and directed by Jennifer Layton, at 7 p.m. in The Eagle Theater at Central High Cultural and Educational Complex. Set in modern day America and sprinkled with redneck humor, the play opens with Bill, Dave, and Jimmy, three men with a wagon-load of women troubles. Even though it’s

Christmas Eve, and tradition dictates they should be home, drinking hot cocoa and singing carols, the boys decide to high-tail it into the mountains for a little hunting and a lot of beer. This protest does nothing to improve the mood of the women back in town. Lou runs Lou’s Diner. She and Bill and have been trying

(unsuccessfully) to have a baby. Barbie Jo, Lou’s head waitress, is married to Dave, and they have kids, but Dave’s not interested in family this year. Darlene, the most beautiful girl in three counties is dating Jimmy, but while she’s ready to settle down, Jimmy can’t stand the idea of “commitment.” As theatergoers will see, it’s going

to take a Christmas miracle to get these redneck families back together. The Eagle Theater is located at 2748 Dogtown Road, in the Central High Cultural and Educational Complex. Tickets may be purchased at the door or online at gvatheatre.org. General Admission is $15, and $10 for seniors.

Decorate with a nose toward inviting holiday aromas

H

oliday decor is as much about the sights and sounds as it is about the scents of the season. Few things evoke the holiday spirit as much as the aroma of fresh evergreen or spicy cinnamon and cloves. Incorporating inviting aromas into holiday decor can make homes feel even more special. Filling a home with fragrant decor takes a little ingenuity and planning. Here are some ideas to incorporate the scents of the holiday season into your decor. Use a real Christmas tree. An easy way to create a pine-like scent indoors is to select a real Christmas tree. Ask the tree farm which varieties are the most fragrant. If a fresh tree is not possible, fill a decorative basket with pine cones and evergreen boughs for

And although my grandmother was the best cook I’ve encountered in my life and the person who taught me what little I know about in the kitchen, she made a most inedible fruitcake that each and every family member received annually. I’m not sure if anyone ever had the nerve to tell her most of those weighty loaves ended up in the trash, but I can’t remember anyone at our house ever taking a bite of the mysteriously looking dessert.

She would send us home with a trunk full of those tins, filled with cookies and treats so intense the smell permeated through the back seat and made the whole car smell like Miss Lilly’s kitchen. As a child, I think that’s when Christmas began for us. I suppose in those days after Thanksgiving, that the first hints of that much sought after spirit begins to flicker somewhere deep down in our souls. And shopping for gifts for loved ones, searching for

that perfect tree, singing a Christmas carol, listening to a choir of youths at Midnight Mass, or wrapping gifts at the dining room table all combine to create a full-blown version of that elusive Christmas spirit. Over the years, I’ve come to realize just what that special spirit entails is different for everyone. It could be the smallest act of kindness, or the heftiest of sacrifices … or just a kind encouraging word that might bring out that spirit in

someone. For me, the gathering of family or enjoying a good meal together during the holidays seems like a gift, and I place less and less emphasis on what I received and more on how lucky I am to have a wonderful family. And, that wonderful feeling of Christmas morning and running down the stairs to see what’s under the tree is just a memory for me. But, watching my kids on Christmas morning and enjoying the excite-

ment in their eyes is just as rewarding, and, yes, still brings out that indescribable feeling that only Christmas can provide. And, in the interest of full disclosure, my house has been smelling very much like the holidays, thanks to that kind lady and her grandmother’s mixture of what I call liquid Christmas spirit. Here’s hoping your holidays are filled with that illustrious warmth of the season, and the spirit moves you.

Wrestlers earn victories at challenging quad Daly takes 1st in 170 class as Goochland places 5th at invite

By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

Alex Thompson only weighs 169 pounds, but his Goochland wrestling team had to move him up to the 182 weight class for Wednesday’s quad meet at Cosby High School featuring three powerhouses in Matoaca, Midlothian and the hosting Titans. He was also going on just two days of practice – only four days prior, he and his Goochland football teammates had concluded a standout 12-2 season in the state semifinals – and he had to go up against Matoaca’s Thaddeus Boyd after all four of his teammates who wrestled before him went down against the Warriors on pins. As his match wore on, it looked liked Boyd would continue that streak. He took-down Thompson for a quick lead. Thompson fell into a 7-0 hole after two near-falls. In fact, Thompson was on his back trying to avoid the pin… …when he pulled off the surprise turnaround. In a flash he flipped from the floor to the top, pivoting Boyd onto his back. “Alex is a big-move wrestler,” Goochland head coach Mike Nadder said. “He’s always looking for a big move and there’s nothing wrong with that, especially when you’re wrestling up and you’re giving up a lot of weight.” His game-changer was a simple rollthrough – he felt the weight shift, and he hit the roll. “I think he caught the guy offguard, and he’s strong,” Nadder said of Thompson. “And once he gets you on your back, chances are you’re not coming off your back.” Not long after that, the referee slapped the mat, freezing the first-period clock with 31 seconds left. Thompson rose to his feet having won by pin. “I was real proud of how he performed tonight considering the weight he was giving up,” Nadder said. Thompson’s triumph was the one bright spot in Goochland’s meet-opening 54-24 loss to Matoaca at Cosby High School, as the Warriors won all but one of their contested matchups by pins. Thompson was held out of the Bulldogs’ 60-6 loss to Cosby – his opponent would’ve been state champion Simeone

Holmes, and because Thompson was giving up too much weight and going on just two days of practice, Nadder couldn’t afford him getting hurt – but Jon Daly at 170 picked up a hard-fought win against the Titans. Daly and his opponent Cole Giegling each delivered a takedown to tie the match at 2-2, but Daly in the second period took control on top, gripped Giegling’s left upper arm and turned him onto his back before fighting to stay on top. Daly earned the pin with 47 seconds left in the period. The senior capped his strong night with another big victory to spark a stretch in which the Bulldogs won three of their final four contested matchups in a 61-18 team loss to Midlothian. Facing Alec Townsend, Daly worked his second shot at his leg into a leadgetting takedown. Townsend soon tied it 2-2, but Daly struck back with a reversal and nearly worked that move into a pin – the referee tapped the mat right after he got tapped on the back to signal the end of the first period. But Daly responded by rolling-out a takedown. He completed the pin 17

seconds inside the second stanza. “He’s probably one of the hardest workers in the room,” Nadder said. “He’s put his time in – he’s had his losses, so he’s now getting his chance to get some wins and be on the other side… just getting his hand raised more often than not.” Ethan Ford, who wrestled at 195, worked hard all summer, and he stayed at it through two tough matches against his Matoaca and Cosby opponents to parlay a takedown into a pin of Midlothian’s William Notarianni. Connor Duncan, who this year earned First Team All-Region and AllDistrict honors at offensive lineman as part of the Bulldogs’ football team, entered the wrestling season having lost 50 pounds since last year. Like Ford, Duncan took control on a takedown; he sealed the deal 38 seconds into his 220 weight-class matchup with a pin of Will Haemker. Outside of those victories, it was a learning night for a Bulldogs unit that just this year transitioned from Class 2 to Class 3. Most of the team’s starting lineup consists of second-year wrestlers, and

they were going up against opponents who have been wrestling for years and are competing for programs in Classes 5 and 6. “We’re making due with the numbers we have…it was a disappointing night obviously when you lose, but we had some kids do some good things that we feel like we’re on the right track and we’re heading in the right direction,” Nadder said. One of those second-year wrestlers, Grant Heidel, whom Nadder said “just doesn’t back down” and has done a lot of work in the offseason, endured into the second period before getting pinned by state finalist John Bolstad. Max Moreno at 132 also fought hard; in a meet that saw several wrestlers get pinned in the first period, Moreno didn’t go down until more than a minute had passed in the second against both Matoaca and Cosby. He also endured in a 12-7 loss by decision to Midlothian’s Robbie Painter. “Overall we had a lot of things we did well,” Nadder said. “We’ll go back to the room and we will try to fix the things we didn’t do so well; then we’ll see what happens – it’s an ongoing process.”

ASHLAND - Goochland fared well at the first Patriot Revolution Invitational tournament on Saturday. The Bulldogs placed fifth in total team points, with four wrestlers finishing in the top four in their respective weight classes. This kind of performance gives head coach Mike Nadder confidence moving forward. “I’m pleased today with some of them,” Nadder said. “A couple of matches were close, we should have won…but overall we’re still growing.” Wrestler Jon Daly finished first in the 170 weight class on Saturday, defeating Cameron Penn of Midlothian. Connor Duncan finished second place in the 220 weight class. Duncan came up short in the first place match, losing to Pedro Melendez of Caroline. In the 195 weight class Ethan Ford finished in second place, falling short in the first place match against Chris Poole of Caroline. In the 160 weight class, Abdul Soccarras finished fourth. Soccarras lost in a close match to Ethan Ky of Midlothian. “I think we’re heading in the right direction by wrestling these bigger schools,” Nadder said. “I feel like the competition is preparing us for the postseason, which is the most important part of the year.”

Goochland wins 2019-20 opener over Amelia By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

Last year, Goochland boys basketball made school history, achieving a program-record 23 wins and earning its first-ever trip to the state semifinals. But that historical season for the Bulldogs also began with a season-opening loss at Maggie Walker. That loss left a bitter taste in their mouths. “We knew, going into this game, we had to make sure our guys were prepared – much better than they were last year going against Maggie Walker,” Goochland coach Preston Gordon said of their Dec. 13 matchup at Amelia. “We had them dialed-in and focused on what we need to get done.” The Bulldogs delivered, triumphing 64-52 over Amelia on Friday night to open the 2019-20 season on a victorious note. “I’m just proud of our guys,” Gordon said. “They stayed focused.” Junior Jackson Hoffler made the move

up to varsity this season after 2 years of JV; Gordon noted how he’s been coming in on Saturday mornings, probably about 45 minutes before everyone else arrives, and he’s been getting a lot of shots on the machine. There was one morning where he made 70 shots out of 100 – all of them 3’s. Hoffler translated that hard work into a team-leading 20 points against Amelia. Team depth shined early for the Bulldogs as three of their leading forces last year – senior Quincy Snead, junior Kameron Holman and sophomore J.B. Bell – all joined Hoffler in scoring 9 or more points. Holman made 15 points, Bell double-doubled with 10 points and 15 rebounds and Snead delivered 10 rebounds and 9 points. Defensively, Gordon said his players communicated well, and they know their principles. But he noted that rebounding the basketball better will be a point of emphasis through the next couple weeks. “We knocked down free throws when we needed to,” Gordon added. “Our

shooting is just going to get better…we took some shots that are early-season shots and we’ll get better at those and we’ll be more focused on what we need to do and definitely get some better looks in terms of offensive, and our defense is going to continue to grow. “We’ve laid the foundation; it’s just making tweaks for each game.” The Bulldogs opened this week with a 54-45 win over Prince Edward. Holman led the way for Goochland with 17 points and had 5 steals, Bell netted 11 points and added 8 rebounds, Walker Murray scored 9 points and added 5 rebounds and Snead made 6 points, 7 assists, 7 rebounds and 8 steals. Goochland, a Class 3 team, will host Class 4 schools Patrick Henry on Friday, Dec. 20 and Lee-Davis on Saturday, Dec. 21, with both games slated to begin after 6 p.m. matchups featuring Caroline vs. LeeDavis on Friday and Caroline vs. Patrick File/Goochland Gazette Henry on Saturday. All four games are Goochland’s JB Bell (15) and Quincy Snead, seen defending in a scheduled to be held at Goochland High 2018-19 season game, combined for 19 points and 25 rebounds School. in the Bulldogs’ 2019-20 season-opening win over Amelia, 64-52.

BRIEFLY Goochland, Benedictine players, Goochland coach named to Big River Rivalry North All-Stars team Goochland County will be represented by standout players and a standout coach in this coming Saturday’s 7th annual Big River Rivalry all-star football game featuring talented seniors from the Greater Richmond region, with All-Stars from North of the James River going head-to-head against All-Stars from South of the James River. Goochland High School will feature Devin McCray, Kindrick Braxton and Connor Duncan on the North of the River All-Stars. Their teammates from Benedictine are Malik James and Brian Daughtry. The North All-Stars’ coaching staff includes GHS head varsity football coach Alex Fruth. McCray, Braxton, Duncan and Coach Fruth helped lead Goochland to a 12-2 record in 2019,

a Region 3B title and the Class 3 state semifinals. James and Daughtry contributed to a relentless defense that was central to Benedictine football reaching and winning the VISAA Division I state championship. The Big River Rivalry AllStar football game will take place on Saturday, Dec. 21, 12 noon at Randolph-Macon College.

Goochland players, coach make All-Region, All-District Goochland head football coach Alex Fruth was named Coach of the Year both in Class 3, Region B and in the James River District. Fruth (26-3), completing his second year at the helm of Goochland football, has led the Bulldogs to two region championships, two state semifinals appearances and one state final in 2018. Goochland senior Devin McCray was named the region’s Defensive Player of the Year as well

as Defensive Co-Player of the Year in the district along with Buckingham’s Walter Edwards, who was also named the district’s Offensive Player of the Year. Handle butter with care Butter can make or break a cookie recipe, as butter is often the glue that holds the cookie together. Therefore, it is key to follow the directions carefully regarding how to handle butter. Smithsonian.com says to leave butter at room temperature for 30 to 60 minutes to properly soften it. This takes patience, but fiddling with butter too much can damage its delectable integrity. While purists may say butter is best, margarine may be acceptable if it has a high fat content; otherwise, cookies may spread out and flatten. When it comes time to cream the butter with sugar, be sure to do so thoroughly to incorporate air into the butter and remove the grainy texture of the sugar.

A few cookie basics, just in time for holiday bake-a-thon ovice bakers making cookies for the first time may be a little overwhelmed when perusing recipes. Baking is a science, and sometimes it takes practice to get the results just right. However, there are some tips that can help yield better, buttery bounties.

Cooking Channel says to spoon the flour lightly into a dry measuring cup, then level it off with a knife. Do not dip the measuring cup into the flour or tap the knife against the cup. This will pack too much flour into the measuring cup and result in dry, tough cookies.

food experts at Delish say to try moving cookies onto a lower rack in the oven if they aren’t retaining their shape when baked. Put an empty cookie sheet on the top rack. That will block the cookies from the most intense heat that rises to the top of the oven. Mastering cookies takes a little patience and some trial and error. Once bakers get Slow down the eggs their feet wet, Christmas-cookie-baking Add eggs one at a time to make sure becomes even more special. each will emulsify properly with the fat in the butter. Adding eggs en masse may cause the emulsification to fail.

Chill out Follow recipes that call for chilling cookie dough carefully. This process is important for making sliced and shaped cookies. By chilling, the dough becomes more malleable for rolling and even slicing.

The holiday season is rife with tradition. Some holiday traditions, such as holiday lighting displays, are impossible to miss, while others are more subtle and possibly even unknown to many. One tradition that falls into the latter category involves the placing of oranges into Christmas stockings. The origins of Christmas stockings are rooted in legend, and one of the more popular tales involves a widowed father of three beautiful girls. According to Smithsonian.com, this father was struggling to make ends meet and was concerned that his financial struggles would affect his daughters’ ability to find a spouse. As the legend goes,

St. Nicholas was wandering through the man’s town and heard of his concerns. Recognizing that the man was unlikely to accept charity, St. Nicholas slid down the chimney of his house and placed three gold balls in the girls’ recently laundered stockings, which were hanging by the fire to dry. The value of the gold balls, which were discovered the following morning, was enough to ensure the girls could eventually wed. So what does that have to do with oranges? Those who wanted to replicate the tale could not so easily come upon gold balls to place in stockings, so they chose something similar in appearance: oranges.

Homes continued from >5 write about the events of WWI and its impact on the nations involved. When she began to consider the many players involved in the Great War, however, she soon realized that their various homes offered a perfect entre into the kinds of people they were and why their lives played out they way they did. “I began to see these country houses as a physical

way of tracing the way these aristocrats ruled,” Parrish explained, and soon she found herself delving into the fascinating —and sometimes tragic — secrets of homes including those belonging to such famous families as the Churchills and the Mitfords Serving up history lessons with an entertaining twist is a skill Parrish honed during her years as an educator, having taught in Virginia public schools, the College of William and Mary, Lynchburg College, and Virginia State University.

She knows that the more accessible she can make a subject, the more likely it will be to catch her readers’ interest. The subject matter here, of course, also has a certain builtin appeal. “Everybody loves a good castle,” Parrish said, pointing out that even today children are constantly offered images of kingdoms, castles and princesses. “I think we’re drawn to that.” Parrish will be speaking about her research during several upcoming pre-

sentations, including on Wednesday (tonight), Dec. 18, at the Mathews County Library, located at 251 Main Street in Mathews, and on Tuesday, Dec. 19, at the Montpelier Library, located at 17205 Sycamore Tavern Lane in Montpelier.
