A look back at a few of the fascinating Goochland residents we met last year

fter meeting his goal of becoming the nation’s top seller of Boy Scout popcorn last year, 15 year old Beck Garnett decided that it was time to take his telent for saesmnship in another direction. So after having sold more than $200,000 in popcorn over the years, Garnett switched gears to train other area Boy Scouts and to help them sell. “I feel like I have reached my goal [of being No. 1 in the nation] and have been working toward that for eight years,” said the Goochland County teen who is a member of Troop 444, which meets at Reveille United Methodist Church. “I can really help this other troop reach their goal.” see Faces > 3

Goochland County has once again been awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). This award was received for the third year in a row and the fifth time since 2014, this time for the County’s Fiscal Year 2020 Budget. It represents a significant achievement for Goochland County and reflects the commitment of the board of supervisors and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. In order to receive the budget award, an entity has to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an see Award > 2

“Attainment of the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is a noteworthy accomplishment, not all counties get recognized with this award,” noted County Administrator John A. Budesky. “It demonstrates Goochland County’s ongoing commitment to fiscal planning and transparency.”

Ruby Amos Given the choice of any place in the world to live, Goochland’s Ruby Amos will say that her home in Oilville is undoubtedly the one she would pick. After all, she should know — she’s been there over 100 years. “To me, Goochland is the best place to live,” said Amos, who was born just a few miles away from the home in which she has lived for 70 years. “I call it God’s Country.” Last July, as preparations continued for her grand birthday celebration, Amos took some time to look back on a life she describes as a blessed one. “The Lord’s been good to me,” she said, remembering the years spent raising five boys with her husband John. If there were things she didn’t have — including a driver’s license — Amos says she didn’t miss them. Instead, she describes days she kept full with work she loved, including sewing, cooking and tending the large garden that provided most of what the family ate. They also raised cattle, pigs and chickens, making trips to the grocery store largely unnecessary.

Born on Aug. 4, 1919, Ruby Amos was the third of 10 children born to Stanley and Nettie Richmond. These days, nearly a century later, she still enjoys doing genealogy research and sharing her deep knowledge of local history. Amos says the secret to her longevity lies with the things she has avoided — like cigarettes — but also with the things she has enjoyed as much and as often as she can, including staying active. “I’ve always loved to run, loved to be active,” said Amos. “I’ve always felt that if you give up [moving], your body gives up too. And I’m not ready to give up.”

Lisa Landrum Several years ago, when Goochland County Public Schools’ supervisor of nutrition services Lisa Landrum hit upon a solution for providing nutritious meals to local students in need during the summer months, she knew her first step would be to get all of the other people who would need to be involved in the project on board. And, in this case, that meant literally. Landrum’s plan, to turn a decommissioned GCPS

bus into a kitchen on wheels, meant that she and her staff would be able to visit local neighborhoods and ensure that those who might otherwise struggle with hunger could have access to warm and healthy meals. And while Landrum faced a number of hurdles in her quest to get the project up and running, it is already proving an invaluable community resource. Even before Landrum and county school board members happily cut the ribbon on the county’s new Sunshine Food Bus on June 11, it had already served over 130 meals. “It was tough, but it was worth it,” said Landrum of the various challenges involved in getting the bus outfitted with the electricity, water and food service equipment that would be needed to safely serve hundreds of meals throughout the summer. Fortunately, the school administration, including GCPS Superintendent Jeremy Raley, and the local school board were enthusiastic supporters of the plan from day one, and also pitching in to help were numerous local partners including the Goochland Education Foundation, the see 2019 > 14

continued from >1 He spent this fall training members of Boy Scout Troop 442 to sell popcorn to raise money. Much of his effort has gone to Troop 442, which meets in the Manchester area of South Richmond. That troop previously had been struggling but Beck’s commission replaced the troop’s equipment and backpack gear. “Beck is a living example of what the Boy Scout of America instills in the youth who participate in our programs — it is about character and leadership,” said George M. McGovern, Scout executive and CEO at the Boy Scouts of America’s Heart of Virginia Council. “At 15 years old, what he has done by giving back to those in need speaks to his character,” McGovern said. “And now he is teaching the youth in those units how to sell and earn their way and that speaks to his leadership. These are the life skills that help communities and that employers look for when hiring potential employees.” The process has been very rewarding, Beck said. “They have picked it up very well and they have been very responsive,” he said. “They have been doing great so far. It’s great to see them progress on their selling skills and really help their troop. They have have picked up very quickly and easily and will be able to do so much more with the money they are raising.” Members of Troop 442 plan to use the commissions they earn this year to pay it forward like Beck has done. They are planning to give 10% to help fund a new girl’s unit of their troop and 10% to a another new troop being formed in a financially challenged area of Richmond.

Conditional Security Romans 11:22

“Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God’s kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off.” Salvation is secure but conditional. Keeping from falling/being cut off means faithfulness to God till death. “For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,” (Hebrews 10:26). “You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.” (Galatians 5:4). Once saved always saved? No. Scriptures say differently.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Old sled offered treasured connection to past by Jim RidolphI Contributing Columbist

I

t’s funny how some memories of Christmas remain in our minds, crystal clear in its detail; while others fall into the category of who knows where I was or what I was doing. That doesn’t mean those occasions weren’t festive and rewarding, they just didn’t make that imprint in our psyche that some others did. Throughout the years, I’ve written about many of those most memorable Christmas days of my life. Oddly, I”ve rarely described the Christmas that I’ll remember for a lifetime, a memory that always makes me appreciate my family more at this time of year. It’s a time of year that is always tinged with an unfilled void and a sense of sorrow not just for one of two seasons, but for a lifetime. Unfortunately, the holiday season also is a time of increased mortality and that group of survivors who have experienced a death in the family at Christmas are unwilling members of a lifelong society who will always see the holidays through a different lens. But, for some unknown reason, this holiday brought back memories of a different Christmas, one year after my father’s death. Our small family gathered up our presents and headed to Grandma’s house for the holiday. Realizing it

would be a tough anniversary, all of us thought it best to be surrounded by the comfort of a loving family. So, we gathered in my Nannie’s house in Gaithersburg, Maryland, to endure our first Christmas without my dad. It was a cold and gray Christmas Eve as I strolled around the large yards on all sides of the house. I poked my head in the many outbuildings, but one my grandmother called the meat house caught my attention. It had long since surrendered its meat-curing purpose and now housed a untidy collection of old furniture and trunks. Hanging on one of those poorly lit walls, I glared at a familiar sight, the shape of a sled hanging on a wooden peg, probably resting there for

How many great people can you meet in a year? As it turns out, quite a few By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Every year at this time, as we here at the Gazette look back on the various stories we’ve covered, it never fails to amaze us just how much can happen in the space of a single year. In Goochland, as in any community, change is the only constant, and each week seems to bring some new development that takes hold of the county’s collective attention. While the headline-making events are certainly interesting to look back on — as we did last week — it is undoubtedly even more enjoyable to remember the many people we were blessed to meet. Some of those we were introduced to in 2019, of course, may need no introduction at all: Having lived in the county now for over 100 years, Ruby Amos (read more about her on page 3) has already made more friends than most of us will in a lifetime, and also serves as a living, breathing encyclopedia of Goochland history and lore. We spent time with her this year as she prepared to celebrate her 100th birthday, and were charmed immediately by her sharp wit and formidable memory. If Amos represented Goochland’s longest-tenured residents, another one of our favorite faces this year offered a shining example of how the county’s young people continue to lift up those around them. All-Metro player part of Saints’ best year yet Ellis, from Goochland, helped St. Catherine’s volleyball team reach its first-ever state final By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

RICHMOND – To Claire Ellis, Madison Williamson was one of the best captains. She was really nice, and she was among the players who taught Ellis leadership on St. Catherine’s volleyball team. Ellis recalled Williamson telling her: You always say that you don’t want to be a leader because you don’t want people to look up to you. But I’ve looked up to you since you were a freshman. “That really helped me in becoming a captain for two years,” Ellis said. The skills, approaches and lessons she learned from her teammates and from her longtime coach and instructor Skip Weston helped the St. Catherine’s senior Libero from Goochland County deliver a storied high school career that saw her become the school’s all-time digs leader with over 1,400, and earn First Team All-Metro, All-State and AllLIS honors following the conclusion of the Saints volleyball team’s best season to date. Ellis has been part of the Saints’ team ever since her 9th grade year – her first year at St. Catherine’s after she was at Salem Christian School in Goochland since she was at least 4 years old. “Some of those girls, I had been together with since I was 3 or 4,” Ellis said of her former classmates at Salem Christian. “But coming here…everyone was so nice and so welcoming, I’ve just really enjoyed it.” She started out playing

Libero her freshman year, then shifted to defensive specialist, or middle back, with the team’s senior DS’s also getting to play at Libero. Towards the end of the season, she got put back into the shirt, and she’s played Libero ever since. Throughout Ellis’ first three seasons, the Saints put together banner campaigns – her freshman year, they made the state quarterfinals, and in both her sophomore and junior years, they reached the state semifinals – before going the furthest the program has ever gone this past fall: the state final. Ellis helped her Saints get there – and she did so while playing through a fractured femur. She confirmed the injury before the LIS tournament and learned that she had been playing with the fracture for a month. She doesn’t know exactly when it hap-

ELLIS

pened because she was having knee problems a little bit before that; they thought that it might had just been her meniscus or patella, but it was actually the femur where it connects to the knee, right behind the knee. Ellis said it also bruised the bone. She played with padding around her knee, and she said that, while her doctor didn’t want her to keep playing, he realized she was playing her

senior season – let alone going to states – so he said that she could play through it, but after the postseason, she’d have to take 10 weeks off. She’s dealt with pain at some points, but now that she’s taking time off, it’s not bad right now. It also didn’t really hinder her play through her final LIS and VISAA tournaments. “When the adrenaline’s going, it didn’t really affect me,” Ellis said. “Sometimes it would after – when I would ice it, I couldn’t bend it for a little while, but playing, it’s not bad.” A diving force throughout the season, Ellis racked up 21 digs in the LIS final against Collegiate (3-0), 26 digs in the Saints’ state semifinals win over Bishop O’Connell and 15 digs in the state championship match. According to the Times-Dispatch, she had 378 digs to go along with 57 aces and 46 assists.

Ellis, who is set to play at Libero for Shepherd University in West Virginia, loves being defensive captain. “I love defense – that’s my favorite part, is just digging,” she said. “It’s just kind of fun because their big hitter will come up and take a big swing and if you dig it, everyone’s like ‘Oh!’” She began her volleyball journey around 5th grade; she saw that her sister was playing volleyball at her old school, so she came out and, as a 5th grader, would get her hand on the ball. The coach would pepper with her, and by her 6th grade year, he had let her onto the team, where she’d help in practicing with the players. It was also in 6th grade that Ellis played on her first travel team: 12 Metro at Richmond Volleyball Club. Before that, she had been playing basketball and also danced, but she realized that

physical contact sports weren’t for her. When she went to volleyball, she liked the team aspect of it, and how mentally tough you have to be, “because unlike most sports, you can be up 10 and then be down in a matter of a few minutes.” Ellis figured she and her Saints would probably make it to the finals this year “because this is the best that our team has ever been in the history of St. Catherine’s.” The Saints assembled a 26-5 overall record, won the LIS tournament championship, went undefeated in regular season and LIS play and didn’t drop a set in their three-set-minimum matches (invitational matches are typically two sets minimum) until they defeated Bishop O’Connell 3-1 in the state semifinals. “I knew that we had to do well because it was my last year and I was like: It’s the last time I’m going to be playing with a lot of these girls and we’re all gonna branch off, especially with my senior friends,” she said, noting how she and Jailah Channer came onto the team as the only two freshmen together, and how she played with fellow defensive standout Jessie Atkinson on her 12’s team. And junior setter and All-Metro Player of the Year Quinn Menger, from nearby Powhatan County, has been a longtime teammate – and a friend for five years now. Ellis and Menger first played together on RVC’s 14u Nationals team before transferring to St. Catherine’s and becoming part of the volleyball team at the same time. They also played beach volleyball together before going to St. Catherine’s and have spent every day before school

Ellis continued from >7 together. “I’ve loved every year playing with her,” Ellis said. “She’s a setter and I’m a Libero and it’s kind of a neat little combination because I’m helping make her job easier. She’s always the more talkative one and I always love when she’s encouraging everybody – it’s really fun playing with her – and then I’m more of the quiet one, but I will be very competitive sometimes, and it’s really funny when we’re on opposite sides because we just go at it with each other. “And if we’re on the same side, then we are going to beat whoever’s on the other side,” Ellis added with a laugh, “because we are so competitive.” There were a lot of emotions and motivations behind wanting to win states, including going up against a perennial title contender in Flint Hill. And while the Saints ultimately finished as the state runners-up to the Huskies – who won their third straight state title and their 10th in the last 12 years – Ellis said that “it was actually nice to actually just take a set off them” in the 3-1 loss. “I loved it, because it’s really good competition for us,” Ellis said of getting to challenge for the state championship. “And the states were just so much fun, because, before playing, you’re with your team, you’re in a hotel together, you get to bond, you’re making Tik Toks or videos… and then you’re in the bus, you’re singing songs all the way there.

Nick Vandeloecht/Goochland Gazette

St. Catherine’s senior Claire Ellis (Goochland) receives the ball during a 2019 regular-season match at Collegiate.

And then, when you get there, it’s like you’re getting up against this really big competition and you’re just using what you have done all year and just laying it out there on the court. And it’s really cool because that’s the first plaque for volleyball that we’ve ever brought back for states.” Her team could rely on every one of its players who stepped onto the court. Most of the Saints’ starting lineup had played travel ball, which, Ellis pointed out, doesn’t happen a lot. With Ellis and Menger transferring in, Channer beginning her years with the team as a freshman just as Ellis did, Elise Williamson getting to play during Ellis’ sophomore year and Rian Sherod beginning varsity as an eighth grader, an incredibly talented core of players came together to lead the Saints. Once they got that whole group going – in Ellis’ words, they were “just kind of unstoppable.” “We knew what we wanted

to do,” she said, “and then we brought in people like Campbell [Wood] and [Guinevere] Buono… which was really nice, and Bella [Lupica], our freshman middle, which she was put into a really hard spot this year, but she really worked through it. I’m really excited to see what happens after.” Ellis said she was very fortunate to get onto the team her freshman year. “I was really nervous to come in because I was new,” Ellis said. “But everyone was so nice and they really taught me leadership… so when they left, I would end up taking over.” She also felt fortunate to have Skip Weston, with whom she had done private lessons at RVC since she was around 10 years old, as her head coach at St. Catherine’s. During lessons, he didn’t just limit her to Libero-related instruction – he let her hit in addition to setting, passing and serving. “I really am grateful that he

taught me how to hit, though, because I actually know how to hit now, so if ever need-be, I can do it,” she said. Ellis added that Weston is “always looking out for your best interests.” “He always wants you to do well and he will check up on you if you’re hurt – he’ll send you a text – and he just wants you to be your best,” she said. “He wants you to do your best, and that makes you want to do it so he’s not wasting his time or anything, because you want to do well for him.” In continuing her volleyball career to the collegiate level, Ellis had a really tough decision this summer as she was looking at a few different schools. But when she went to the camps, Shepherd was the one that really made her feel like she was part of the team already. “And they really went out of their way to make sure I was doing all right and always talking to me, and I really liked that aspect,” she said, “and the coach has always been so nice.” To Ellis, it took the Saints a lot of time, effort and hard work to craft their best season yet. “And then you have to come into the gym always wanting to get better,” she said. “We all had to come in like: This is what we want to do this year…we don’t want to drop a set in the LIS, we’re gonna win LIS for the eighth year in a row and we’re gonna make it to the states’ finals. “That was our goal,” she said, “and we worked really hard to work up to that goal.

BEST 5 OF 2019 Goochland boys basketball makes history The Bulldogs set new records with their 2018-19 season, delivering a program-best 23 wins and reaching the program’s first-ever state semifinals contest on an incredible 21-game winning streak. They won the James River District and Region 2A tournament championships, and they had strong senior leadership from JaMel Allen, DJ Harris, Isaiah Matovu and Perry Snead-Johnson.

Benedictine football wins 2019 state title The Cadets, who saw key players suffer injuries that took them out for large chunks of the season, were led by a stalwart defensive effort that never relented from Game 1 to the final, in which they defeated rival St. Christopher’s 14-6 for the 2019 VISAA Division I state championship. Dual-sport standout Jay Woolfolk, who is committed to UVA both for football and baseball, was hurt early in the season but returned for the playoffs to lead the Cadets at quarterback.

Goochland volleyball reaches state semis For the second time since they won the state championship in 2015, the Bulldogs returned to the state semifinals, this time doing so after bumping up from Class 2 to Class 3. Featuring senior leadership from middle blocker Mary King, versatile setter Trinity Wonderling, Libero Ellie Spencer, defensive specialist Ilaria Russell and outside hitter Rachel Carter, Goochland won the Region 3B title over Independence 3-0, powered past Park View 3-0 in the state quarterfinals, fell to Tabb 3-1 in a competitive state semifinals match and won 22 straight matches.

Benedictine baseball wins 2019 state title Led by a large and outstanding senior class, featuring Jamari Baylor who not long after was drafted by the Phillies, and Jay Woolfolk, the Cadets battled past St. Christopher’s 7-4 to win the 2019 VISAA Division I state championship. They finished the season 28-2, got attention from national rankings along the way and won a memorable state quarterfinals game over Norfolk Christian, 11-10 in 14 innings.

Ragone helps Dragons win first state title Goochland’s Emma Ragone contributed to Maggie Walker’s Governor’s School’s girls soccer team not only winning its first state championship in 2019, but also ending George Mason’s historic run of state titles at 11 straight.

The Town Knock

Thursday

Sled ago. It somehow reminded me of him, of the many sledding adventures we had enjoyed, moments not realized at the time for their importance or fleeting nature. The best thing about spending Christmas in Gaithersburg was the increased chance of waking up to about a foot of snow. The then small town was located in the notorious snow belt of western Maryland, a region that received record snows each winter. And, that’s how it happened as I awoke the first Christmas morning following the saddest one of my life. As we opened gifts and enjoyed a big Christmas breakfast, I wasn’t thinking of all the nice gifts I had received, but instead wonder-

ing when I could excuse myself and give that Flexible Flyers a proper test. My mother patiently clasped the seemingly endless clamps on black boots that smelled like retreads, made much more difficult by the endless number of socks she had required. The new piece of rope provided sharp contrast to the darkened wood sled, and the Flexible Flyer logo barely visible under tons of lacquer and wood oil. The hill at the high school was packed

with kids trying out new toys just received, and the hill was smooth and fast coated with a tiny glaze of ice on the surface. The old Flexi didn’t disappoint, and flying down that large hill somehow reminded, renewed and refreshed me. Somehow, that old sled made me feel like the kid who had just received the best gift ever. It was almost dark as the flurries transformed to flakes. The walk home almost seemed dream-like with big Christmas lights reflecting off the white surface, and the snowy dark sky as

a backdrop. I walked down the unplowed streets, the sled following like a loyal dog and skimming across the quickly freezing snow with no effort. As I climbed the hill to my grandmother’s house, I remember thinking what a great Christmas Day this had been. And that old sled accompanied me on many runs in various locations, and always reminded me that some things in life have the power to provide joy if only in limited doses; but the impact they have last a lifetime. Sixty years later, I still think of my dad almost every day, and, yes, Christmas Eve still makes me melancholy, but it only lasts a second as I remember what I had, what I have, and just what good fortune can come in the oddest of forms, like that old worn sled.

2019 continued from >3 Goochland Rotary Club, Piedmont Smokehouse, Old Dominion Metal Products, Inc., and the Goochland Community Action Program. Goochland county Career and Technical Education students also played a major role in getting the Sunshine Food Bus ready for service. .“It’s one of the coolest things I’ve seen in my time here,” said assistant superintendent Steve Geyer, who attended the dedication ceremony held in front of the county administration building. “It’s a great example of the kind of cooperation that can happen when people come together on behalf of our students.

Annika Wooton For 2019 Miss Kansas Annika Wooton, the path to making her dream come true wasn’t the easiest one. And unlike another famous resident of that great state, clicking her heels together three times wasn’t going to get it done. Instead, Wooton had to put in years of hard work, learn to weather disappointment, and remain laserfocused on her goal. Fortunately, on June 8, all of that perseverance finally paid off when the former Manakin-Sabot resident was announced as the winner of the 2019 Miss Kansas Pageant. The photos from that day show her elation as she received her crown, the moment that officially kicked off the year that the title will be hers. But while the former Miss Wichita certainly enjoys all of the glitter and glitz that goes along with being a pageant contestant, Wooton insists that isn’t the part she likes best. Wooton, who moved back to her native Kansas from Goochland to attend the University of Kansas, said she considers herself fortunate to be able to compete alongside the many talented young women she has met since beginning her pageant journey nearly a decade ago in the Greater Richmond Outstanding Teen competition. “These are such driven women with incredible goals, serving their communities,” said Wooton, explaining that, as times have changed, the

pageant world has as well. While the glamour remains, some aspects, including the swimsuit competition, have been phased out. The focus of the organization, she said, “is preparing great women for the world and preparing the world for great women.”

Rosie Williams Ask Randolph Elementary School student Rosie Williams what she might like to be when she grows up, and she tell you that the thing she wants most is to help make people’s lives better. And in fact, she’s already won an award for it. Last year, the Goochland County School Board presented Williams with an ECCHO Award, an honor reserved for those students, teachers and staff members who display the school division’s five core values of excellence, creativity, courage, honor and optimism. The awards are held quarterly and honor recipients from each of the county’s five schools and the division. Williams was nominated by Randolph teacher Sherrill Kauffman for her optimism. The example that was cited in her nomination took place last year, when Williams was in fourth grade. A fellow student who had been struggling approached her and asked how she always managed to stay so positive and upbeat, despite any challenges she was facing. Did she think, the young man asked, that she could help him learn to be that way too? Williams agreed and the two began talking regularly, walking the track during recess and going over ways the student could learn to channel his emotions in positive ways. Thanks to the work the two did together, the improvement in the young man’s outlook was soon plain to see. If Williams has already proven adept at helping others to overcome challenges, it may be in part because she has dealt with some significant ones of her own. Born with degenerative bilateral hearing loss, Williams relies on hearing aids to help navigate the world around her. And while intensive ther-

Fortunately, said Williams’ mother Mary, the school system in Goochland has done an outstanding job of working with the family to ensure that Rosie has been provided with whatever services she needs to ensure her academic success. Outside of the classroom, Williams happily negotiates a whirlwind schedule of Girl Scouts, travel soccer and basketball, and enjoys competing in the Reading Olympics and serving as the Historian for her school. Funny and engaging, she laughs easily and often but also displays the kind of drive and tenacity that is sure to take her to the top of whatever profession she does eventually choose.

Floyd Callihan Of all the things he has accomplished over the past 93 years — and the list is long indeed — Goochland resident Floyd Callihan says the one of which he is most proud is having lead the charge in 2004 to have Virginia’s Route 288 designated as the WWII Veterans’ Memorial Highway. Callihan, whose own WWII service included serving aboard the USS Block Island, was himself honored on Oct. 19, when he was inducted into the Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame. The honor serves as the capstone to a career that has earned Callihan myriad awards and accolades for public service, as well as the respect and admiration of his peers and fellow veterans. While nine decades may seem like quite a few years — he turned 93 on Sept. 30 — Callihan seems to have packed in enough living so far for twice that many. Born in 1927 in Columbus, Ohio, Callihan was already showing an industrious streak by the time he was in high school, spending much of the time that he wasn’t studying working in a local pie shop. With the United States embroiled in war in the Pacific and in Europe, Callihan left school before he finished his senior year to join the US Navy (he would eventually be awarded his diploma). Assigned to the carrier USS Block Island, Callihan spent his days helping to protect the Altantic shipping lanes from the threat of German submarines, which had been sinking

large numbers of American military transports. It was during this time, Callihan remembers, that he first fell in love with the idea of flying as he watched the pilots take off and land on the carrier’s deck, igniting the spark of what would become a lifelong passion for aviation. Callihan began taking flying lessons in 1953, the same year he joined the United States Air Force Auxiliary, the Civil Air Patrol, as a warrant officer in the Northfield Senior Squadron. He quickly earned his private pilot’s license, and would eventually earn his multi-engine and commercial licenses as well. After years of dedication and perseverance — during which he was credited with 16 “finds” and 6 “saves” as a search and rescue pilot — Callihan achieved the rack on full Colonel and was appointed Commanding Officer of the CAP’s 1,500 member Virginia Wing. Throughout his career, Callihan earned high praise for his willingness to roll up his sleeves and get things done. Away from the airfield, he and his wife Shirley, whom he met and fell in love with while on leave from the Navy and married in 1947, raised their three children, daughter Susan and sons Douglass and Glenn.

Robin Hillman When Goochland native Robin Hillman was selected as the 2019 Christms Mother, she said she was honored to have been chosen. “I have always thought this was such a special program, helping those in our community during Christmas, bringing some of the joy of the season to those in need,” said Hillman, adding that she and her family know how much joy can be received from serving others. “My first involvement with the Christmas Mother Program was around 1996 or so when I coordi-

One of the mother’s was so thankful she gave my son a Christmas ornament. We’ve always cherished that ornament. Every year since then, we have hung it on our Christmas tree.” Hillman’s community minded spirit started in high school when she joined Goochland Department of Fire-Rescue and Emergency Services as a volunteer. During her 36 years of volunteer service with Goochland Fire – Rescue, Robin found her passion for emergency and disaster preparedness. She was instrumental in the establishment of Goochland’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program in 2004 fol-

lowing the impact to Goochland from Hurricane Isabel in 2003. Following the implementation of the CERT program, she received a Certificate of Distinguished Service Award from the Commonwealth of Virginia and Virginia’s Department of Emergency Management. More recently, in 2015, she received the Goochland FireRescue Chief’s Award serving as Goochland’s Deputy Emergency Service Coordinator. While finishing her Data Processing degree in 1984, Hillman began her career at National Card Control, Inc., located at that time on Cardwell Road. Thirty-five years later, Hillman still works for the same company. Through the years, she has had many roles at the company such as Computer Operator, Programmer, Business Analyst, Data Processing

Manager and Contact Center Manager. Hillman attributes her ability to serve her community as a very active volunteer to her loving family, all of whom share her desire to help those in need. many walks of life this year, and to have been able to share their stories with our readers. We are looking forward to another fascinating year ahead, and can’t wait to see who we’ll get to meet next.
