A planned gold-mining operation received its stamp of approval from the county Planning Commission on Jan. 9, moving the project one step closer to securing a required Conditional Use Permit (CUP) from the county. The CUP, if approved, would allow Buckingham resident Paul Busch to set up a mining and reclamation operation at 4385 Shannon Hill Road. A similar CUP was approved in 2014, but expired last July 2019 before any mining took place. Busch, however, wouldn’t be the first to seek gold in the county: mining operations on the property, known as the Old Moss Mine, date back to 1835, when gold was dissee Gold > 3

“This announcement is about much more than a new home for Saint Gertrude,” said Sr. Joanna Burley, Prioress of the Benedictine Sisters, and Fr. Jonathan Licari, Benedictine’s Canonical Administrator, in a joint statement. “It is about strengthening the foundation of Catholic education for our young men and women, now and well into the future.” The plan outlined last week will bring St. Gertrude, an all-girls Catholic school currently located on Stuart Ave. in Richmond, to the sprawling, 50-acre River Road campus in

Goochland already occupied by Benedictine. Beginning in 2021, in time for Saint Gertrude’s centennial year in 2022, students will move into a new facility with state-of-the-art amenities, including a cafeteria, communal meeting areas, labs and dedicated classrooms. The two independent schools — long united by their origins in the Benedictine Catholic Order and once located only blocks apart in Richmond’s historic Fan District — will formally operate under the newly-formed umbrella organization of the Benedictine Schools of Richmond, though the schools

will continue to operate independently with a continued emphasis on single-sex education. According to leaders from both schools, the relocation of Saint Gertrude to Goochland will replicate that physical closeness of the past while retaining each schools’ distinctiveness. The two schools will share some facilities such as the gymnasium and athletic fields, while maintaining distinctiveness and independence in their functions, programs and curricula. The schools will also continue to keep their respective names.

Man charged with robbing gas station

BERNARD

On Friday, Jan. 17, at approximately 10:52 p.m., Goochland deputies responded to a call to investigate a knife robbery at the Valero gas station located at 1700 Ashland Road. Based on the information provided by witnesses, an alert was issued for the subject and the vehicle involved in the robbery.

Gold continued from >1 covered there by John Moss. The property was mined for gold and silver on and off for the next hundred years, but no shafts remain unfilled from that operation. According to Busch, his operation would not make use of shafts or blasting, instead relying on a process called “soil washing, as well as centrifuges to separate gold from the soil.

Inclusion continued from >6 Studies indicate that students educated in inclusive classrooms achieve similar results as those involved in non-inclusive settings. To the contrary, a policy that includes all students being mainstreamed provides life experiences that enhance education and better prepares our students for the challenges of the real world. Often, these special needs children inspire and motivate their fellow students and confirm the old adage that a book shouldn’t be judged by its cover. It also allows our children to learn the important lessons of equity, empathy and compassion. Special education is not what it once represented, and now offers special needs children the opportunity to receive the same education in the same setting as their peers. That’s not

Less than 10 minutes later, a subject and a vehicle matching the description was located by a Goochland deputy at another county convenience store, where deputies apprehended Travis Wade Bernard, 33, without incident. Barnard has been charged with robbery.

He also intends to clean up contaminants left by previous mining activities. While Busch did secure the Planning Commission’s approval, he will need to meet a number of required conditions in order to obtain the CUP, including screening the area and adhering to an approved groundwater protection plan. Mining would only be permitted from Monday through Saturday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Concerning a question raised during the meeting about the possibility of contaminating local water supplies, Busch insisted that his operation will not make use of any dangerous chemicals and would not come close to impacting ground water. “Everything we do is clean, Busch said. The final decision on the CUP will be made by the Board of Supervisors in the coming weeks.

to say those special students do not receive the individualized attention or care necessitated by their conditions. Educators do not just lump students together in an effort to mainstream, but carefully plan classrooms so services are available but not segregated in a special setting. As school systems across the nation relinquish old beliefs regarding the education of disabled or special needs children, nondisabled classmates are learning the benefits of inclusion and realizing every student has something to offer. And many educators are declaring that inclusive classrooms are the least expensive and best way to educate our children. It’s a measure whose success can be clearly measured by the results: test date, etc. But the real benefits of the innovative programs are the students who leave school with a better understanding of how the world actually works and

a respect for people with disabilities or special needs. That produces better citizens and a better world for everyone. As a parent of a disabled child, I don’t need to look far for the positive results of my son being included in mainstream classrooms. I hear the phone calls from his friends and hear conversations that offer no hint of bias or dismay, or reluctance to treat Jack as a fellow student no different from any other. As I wrote this column, a pair of tenth-graders knocked on my door. “Is Jack here? they asked. As they entered, they explained that they are fellow students in Jack’s science class, were in the neighborhood, and just wanted to stop by and say hello to their friend. Just a small reminder that inclusion is not only the best way to educate all students, it’s the right way to raise our children.

Impress Men or God? John 12:42-43 “…but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the approval of men rather than the approval of God.” Sound familiar? We often spend our time and effort to impress flawed people instead of God. He alone deserves our full attention and affection. To be more concerned with what athletes, business people, celebrities, and politicians think of us than what God thinks of us is serious misdirection. Want God to marvel at you? Learn from the centurion: “Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled at him…” (Luke 7:9).

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

January 23, 2020

Concerning the ‘good old days,’ some may differ By Roslyn Ryan Editor

It goes without saying that the internet can be a deliciously peculiar place, filled with a confounding number of things that take odd to a whole new level. I know this -- we all know this. So I have to admit that it caught me just a bit off guard the other day when I stumbled upon an article describing something so comically weird that I had to read it twice. Having long been a person who feels everyone has the right to be a weird as they want to be — provided they don’t harm anyone else, of course — I still wasn’t quite prepared for the story of Katrina Holte, 30, a young woman living in suburban Hillsboro, Oregon. Holte’s story began routinely enough. Like many people her age, a few years ago she found herself living

the normal life of a thoroughly modern woman. In Holte’s case, however, as she explained in an interview with a local news outlet last year, something just didn’t feel right. While she was happily married, Holte said she felt as though she was living in the wrong era. And so she did something about it. Over the next few months, Holte left her job as a payroll specialist and began her transformation into the perfect 1950s housewife. It’s important to note here that Holte didn’t just start wearing different clothes and eschewing her dishwasher (although she did do both of those things). In fact, she appears to have changed just about everything in her life, from her furniture — now delightfully retro — to her daily routine, which now centers on keeping her appearance pristine and her home even more so. She sews her own clothes from vintage

patterns, and dinner is on the table exactly when her husband arrives home from work. As someone who has benefitted tremendously from the gains generations of women before me fought so hard for, my immediate reaction to Holte’s choice was very much a halfchuckle, half-snort. But as the week wore on, I began to chide myself for deriding her choice. After all, hadn’t I sat in countless living rooms over the course of my career and listened to women who actually were housewives in the 1950s, women who had raised wonderful families, kept beautiful homes, and found tremendous fulfillment in the process? Besides, as Holte put it, she wasn’t telling other women how to live. This is simply what works for her. One glaring point, of course, is that Holte has a choice, while many women in the 1950s probably did not. If I want to give back my pay-

check, wear perfectly starched day dresses, and dust the mantle every day (I don’t technically have a mantle, but you get the idea), I can do so knowing that I can reverse the decision at any time. And as much as my husband might love being handed a martini by a smiling wife at the end of a long day, it wasn’t part of the deal when we got married. At the end of the day, I thought it might be interesting to put it to our readership: If you had the choice to go back to another era, would you do it? If so, which one would you pick and why? Let us know your thoughts (email rryan@goochlandgazette. com or send mail to 8460 Times Dispatch Blvd., Mechanicsville VA 23116) and we’ll publish them in next week’s edition. Regardless of where you stand, we can’t wait to hear what you have to say.

For father, inclusion a goal worth striving for By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

What does the word inclusion mean to you? As I sat at a recent school board meeting in a metro Richmond county, that question was on the mind of everyone who listened to poignant stories from students who are well acquainted with the term. For some students, the issue of inclusion is real, and just being part of our everyday educational routine is a daily challenge. Whether it’s a noticeable physical disability, or something better hidden to the novice eye, classrooms of today seek to include everyone and prepare all students for careers, college or whatever follows graduation. Students with handicaps, conditions and disabilities are making tremendous strides on campuses across the nation and the belief that they are best served by special programs is quietly being dispelled. There are longstanding beliefs from some parents that including special needs children in mainstream classrooms somehow diminishes the ability of other students to learn because those students require special attention. The outdated theory contends that time spent on one child with special needs reduces learning time for the majority of students in the class. That position dictated policy for years, but, slowly but surely, the education community has realized that including as many students as possible in classrooms provides benefits for all — special needs and mainstream students alike. see Inclusion > page 3

Bulldogs edge past Cumberland 63-62 in OT By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

GOOCHLAND - With 43.3 seconds left to play in overtime, Quincy Snead dribbled the ball to a spot near the upper-right-hand curve of the arc. He motioned to his teammate Gabe Liptak, who moved slightly, and Snead stayed in place and dribbled until less than 20 seconds remained. He passed the ball to Liptak, who passed it back. Snead saw an opening and dribbled inside, trying to make a move with three opposing Dukes collapsing in on him. As he was going up, Snead drew the foul, as well as cheers from the home crowd. The Goochland senior went to the free-throw line. Four-tenths of a second remained on the game clock, and Snead’s Bulldogs were still tied with James River District rival Cumberland at 62-all. But Snead now had the opportunity to shoot two free-throws and get his team the lead. “A lot of things were going through my head,” Snead said. “I knew I had to step up as a leader and hit the free-throw.” He made his first shot. And while the second didn’t go through, and the clock was reset to 0.2 seconds – therefore giving Cumberland one more chance to try and make something happen – Snead delivered again, this time reaching up to block the Dukes’ long-travelling inbounding throw to seal-up the thrilling 63-62 overtime triumph for the Bulldogs. “We’ve got a lot of grit we played with – and heart,” Goochland head coach Preston Gordon said after the game. “They expend so much energy in a situation like we had tonight. I’m really proud of them. They work really hard.” Snead finished his night with 15 points, 4 assists and 3 steals. “Quincy’s been a four-year starter for us,” Gordon said. “He gives everything he has and I wish we had

more players that…would give their body up and just let out everything, every ounce of energy they have every single time like he does.” Junior Kameron Holman unleashed a big night, complementing a team-leading 21 points with 6 steals and 5 rebounds. “He’s one that doesn’t get too high and he doesn’t get too low; he’s a pretty mellow player – and he’s so explosive when he gets to the rim,” Gordon said of Holman. “He’s a fun player to watch. He’s a fun player to coach.” Sophomore J.B. Bell double-doubled with 15 and 13 rebounds. He

also hit the game-tying shot in the closing moments of the fourth quarter, right after Goochland had called a timeout. “Our guys executed the play to the max – perfect, good layup,” Gordon said. Kayshawn Smith scored 8 points with a pair of momentum-swinging 3-pointers across the middle portion of the game. Goochland came into Friday’s game with eight players dressed-out, and all eight, including the three who were called up from JV for the game – Liptak, De’Andre Robinson and JD Mills – took the floor Friday night.

Liptak hit a layup in the fourth quarter for his first varsity points after senior Walker Murray set up his scoring drive on a steal. Liptak also helped his team defensively; at the end of the game, Gordon said that Liptak was “creating some havoc” on Cumberland’s point guard, and that he was putting pressure on the Dukes so that they weren’t necessarily going the way they wanted to go. “I’m really proud of all of our guys that played tonight,” Gordon added. “They did a great job, top to bottom.” Cumberland came into Friday’s game against the Class 3 Bulldogs

(8-1 as of Monday) as the underdog with a 4-4 record and a Class 1 designation. But rivalries can’t be quantified. “Coach [Tyrone] Mosby does a great job with his guys; they play extremely hard and they shot the ball really well tonight against us. We knew they could shoot the ball well,” Gordon added. “They did a pretty good job from the free-throw line as well. They shared the ball. They were aggressive. They came out a lot more aggressive than what we were.” After a 9-9 first quarter, Cumberland heated up from behind the arc, knocking down five 3-pointers to briefly grab a 12-point lead. “I think we took some quick shots,” Gordon added of his Bulldogs. “I felt we kind of settled for some of our shots as opposed to being a little more aggressive offensively.” But Goochland seized momentum towards the end of the half and cut the Dukes’ lead to 5 points when Holman got his hand on a loose ball, followed it down the court as it rolled across the floor, got the ball off the ground and delivered the pass behind his back to Kayshawn Smith, who drained the 3-ball from the corner. “It was our guys being players,” Gordon said of their efforts to cut into the deficit. “There’s nothing that I did X’s-and-O’s; it’s all them. We call a timeout to talk about how we can play, but it wasn’t any X’s and O’s.” Snead kicked off the third quarter with a 3-pointer, then Holman got a steal and passed to Snead in transition; Snead fed the ball back to Holman, who flew up the middle and netted the layup, tying the game. Cumberland hit on a 7-0 run with 6 points from Latrell Harris, but another 3 from Smith sparked a 9-0 answer by the Bulldogs to grab back the lead. Bell and Murray were at the center of that run; Bell on the defensive end swatted a blocked ball like a laser into the hands of Murray,

Goochland’s girls dominate home swim meet By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

GOOCHLAND – Goochland’s girls swimming team dominated Saturday’s home meet at Goochland YMCA, placing first in nine of the girls’ 11 events and winning the overall meet ahead of New Kent, 90-67, The New Community School (TNCS), 95-20, and Blessed Sacrament Huguenot (BSH), 101-13. Goochland swimmers Skylar Dacey, Abby Pillion and Anneliese Rogerson won two individual races apiece, and each of the three swimmers contributed to two relay wins. Dacey, Pillion, Jessica Valdez and Bayleigh Allen set the tone for the kind of meet that the girls’ team would deliver by winning the girls 200-yard medley relay in 2:17.14, with Dacey swimming the backstroke, Pillion the breaststroke, Valdez the butterfly and Allen the freestyle. Rogerson won the girls 200 freestyle by more than 46 seconds in 2:11.31 and later commanded the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.73. In a Bulldogs-laden opening heat of the girls 100 free, Dacey dominated the event for firstplace in 59.65 while Valdez (1:07.23) edged teammate Madalynn Thompson (1:09.94) for second place. Dacey also won the 100 back-

Goochland led by 6 at the top of the fourth, but Gordon noted that they took some uncharacteristic shots when they had the lead, enabling the Dukes to claw their way back ahead with a narrow 57-55 advantage going into the closing seconds. “But with our leadership, with our experience that we have, we learn from it,” Gordon said. After Bell hit the tying shot to force overtime, he knocked down 2 points from the line in OT. Harris added a go-ahead

stroke (1:10.31), this time ahead of teammate Allen (1:16.61). Pillion won the endurance-style girls 500 free by swimming a time of 6:27.78 and finishing more than 50 yards ahead of New Kent’s Kendal Vorous; in the girls 200 individual medley, Pillion briefly surrendered a narrow lead to BSH swimmer Jenna Schwab during the breaststroke leg of the medley, but battled back in the race-ending freestyle stretch, passing Schwab to win the IM in 2:44.98. Rogerson, Thompson, Valdez and Rachel Wilson came together to win the girls 200 freestyle relay in 2:05.88, and the 400 freestyle relay unit closed out the meet on a blistering swim of 4:18.87, putting them nearly 34 seconds ahead of New Kent’s runner-up team of

3-point gain for Cumberland, but Snead in response grabbed the ball after it skipped over a sea of hands trying to pull in the board on Goochland’s offensive end, then knocked down the goahead 3-point shot. He would respond again after Cumberland’s Javon Marion landed a bucket to tie the game at 62-all – this time with the game-winning free-throw. Goochland will next host Amelia on Friday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. “The records don’t show what these teams are like in our district,” Gordon said. “They’re physical, they’re tough and they’re quick – sometimes they’re bigger than us; sometimes they’re faster than us – but I love the way our guys play. There’s a fight in them that is contagious, and I’m glad I have the honor to coach them.”

Vorous, Ema Allen, Kiersten Fuller and Sadie Call. Rogerson, swimming the opening leg, rocketed ahead of her competitors by about half of the length of the pool, and then Allen, Pillion and Dacey extended the lead to secure the relay victory. In the two individual first heats that Goochland’s girls didn’t win, Valdez swam a 30-second 50 free to finish a narrow second to TNCS’ Megan Bolin, who won in 29.68, and Allen notched a 1:17.23 to finish within two swimmer’s lengths of TNCS’ Maddie Wachtel (1:15.36) in the 100 butterfly. Goochland’s boys team overall swam runner-up to New Kent, 108-55, defeated TNCS 94-25 and earned medals in nine of 11 events. In the boys 200 yard medley relay, Joe Hardman, Caleb McCaskill, Richard Hardy and Brandon Avram led through the first 100 yards, but New Kent’s Ian Durkee, Logan Adkins, Kevin Kurek and Gavin Wetherington made the pass in the butterfly stretch to win the relay in 1:58.08. Goochland took second in the event in 2:00.25, and the Bulldogs’ relay team of Luke Michaels, Lucas Edwards, Gavin Hazelton and Jack Clarke added a third-place swim in 2:10.08. Edwards swam a 2:38.68 to take third place in the boys 200 free, with Adkins win-

ning the event in 2:21.78. In the 50 free, McCaskill and Hardman took second (26.44) and third (26.97), respectively, behind winner Wetherington (25.12). Hardy placed second in the boys 100 butterfly (1:13.19) to Kurek (1:11.02), and Clarke rolled out a third-place time of 1:05.40 in the 100 free behind winner Adkins (55.82). Hardy added a second-place finish in the boys 100 backstroke (1:15.52) behind Durkee (1:14.80). Hardman stayed with Wetherington through the first half of the 500 free, but ultimately took second in 6:12.84, with Wetherington winning in 6:06.89. The boys 100 breaststroke turned into a thriller as Clarke, McCaskill and New Kent’s Adam Gray swam neck-and-neck in a threeway drag-race to the wall. Gray touched the wall first (1:17.95), ahead of runner-up McCaskill (1:19.18) and third-place Clarke (1:20.98). The boys 400 freestyle relay team of Avram, Hardy, McCaskill and Hardman kept pace with New Kent past the halfway point, but New Kent’s team of Gray, Kurek, Adkins and Wetherington seized the lead in the third leg to touch the wall ahead of the pack. Goochland held on for second.

for frivolous political reasons, and the growing Socialist leaning of the democrat party. Instead I will vote for Republicans even if I don’t agree with some of their archaic traditional values, which I believe many Republican candidates espouse only to get votes. More conservatives are needed in Washington, D.C., to protect our current economic success and standards of life. I will also not support any Republican candidates financially until I know more about them and hopefully see a willingness to compromise on gun control and abortion.

No compromise, no giving an inch, only a hard line view on these issues that is remarkably unpopular in Virginia and nationwide. Nevertheless, I will not vote for Warner or Spanberger because of the way Democrats have treated President Trump during the last three years, including impeachment
