This year’s budget could bring welcome news to employees of Goochland County Schools, including a pay raise of at least 3 percent if the plan is approved. The pay increase was one of several key items in the budget Goochland County School Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Raley presented to the Goochland County School Board on Jan. 28. “The initiatives outlined in this proposed budget align with our division’s strategic plan and are aimed at maintaining our position as a model of excellence in the Commonwealth,” said Raley, adding that the plan is aimed at helping the school division “to retain the incredibly talented professionals we currently have and to attract exceptional candidates when vacancies occur.” The proposed budget includes a total of see Budget > 5

Internal Integrity Most Important

1 Timothy 6:10 “For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.â€? Are you listening? To maintain personal or societal integrity one must trust and obey God, not things. Isaiah spoke to a nation in his day (700 BC) that was militarily strong, economically prosperous, very religious, and with good strong leaders – yet was coming under God’s judgment because of internal sin. Isaiah 1 is a wake-up call to any nation. “Make sure that your character is free from the love of money‌â€? (Hebrews 13:5). Love of money compromises security.

The path to home ownership can be challenging, but one local organization is working to help local families get there. Habitat for Humanity of Goochland County is currently accepting potential homeowner applications for its 25th home, set to begin construction in May of 2020. “Habitat of Goochland builds strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter, said The Reverend Sandra Taylor-Smith, President of the Board of Directors. “We serve those living in substandard and inadequate housing by providing them with a safe, decent and affordable new place to call home. “ Habitat Goochland leverages volunteer labor and donations of funding and materials to build homes that are then sold to partner families for no profit. The sale is financed with an affordable, no-interest 30-year mortgage. Mortgage payments are then recycled to build more homes. “Many people have the misconception that the homes built by Habitat of Goochland are given away, said TaylorSmith. “In fact, our homeowners make a down payment, pay a monthly mortgage and work alongside our volunteers to complete ‘sweat equity’ hours during the construction phase, she adds. “The ideal applicant(s) should not only have a housing need but the financial and personal capacity to be a homeowner. The Family Selection Committee chooses individuals/families for home ownership based on the following

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

For teachers, support from leaders is priceless By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Just for the record, I have never been a teacher. I have had a lot of teachers over the years, of course, including several who changed my life in the most wonderful and unexpected ways. I also was raised by a teacher, and eventually married one, and have had many, many friends who chose to make teaching their life’s work. So I think, perhaps, that I have learned at least a tiny bit over the years about what teachers need when it comes to job satisfaction. Yes, they need money —that’s a given — and the proposed budget that Goochland School Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Raley shared last week, which features a proposed 3 percent raise for all

employees who achieve a rating of proficient or better on their end-ofthe-year evaluation, is definitely a step in the right direction. I also would point out, however, that in all my years of spending time with my husband’s colleagues, interviewing teachers for stories, and hanging out with friends who were educators, it was rarely the salary that they talked about. After all, most people I know who went into education seemed to accept that they were never going to wheel into the teachers’ parking lot in a Bentley. Even the notoriously long work days teachers face never appeared to sour anyone I knew on the profession. No, in fact, the one unmet need I heard most often from nearly every teacher I met came down to just one

word: support. Salary increases are fantastic and certainly appreciated, but in the end they may not be as important as a leadership team that stands behind its teachers and supports them through thick and thin. Show me a school where teachers feel safe, where they feel respected, where they feel as though their concerns are addressed and their time valued, and I’ll show you a group of professionals whose job satisfaction ratings are sky-high. Just about every teacher I have ever met went into the profession because they wanted to help children and impact lives, not for the money or prestige. But teachers today are often carrying burdens that can take a tremendous toll, up to and including having to be the de facto “parent” for students who

are not given adequate discipline or emotional support at home. What they need more than anything is an administration willing to go to bat for them. In the relatively brief time I have been acquainted with Goochland’s school division, it would appear that the leadership has always attempted to put teachers first, and to give them the support they need to succeed. This is as it should be, and the results clearly translate directly into the classroom. You want a strong school system? Hire the right people. You want to keep the right people? Make sure they know you’ve got their back. It may not be a line item in the budget, but its impact cannot be denied.

Palms still sway in memory, years after last visit to paradise By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

Daphne Du Maurier once wrote, “We can never go back again, that much is certain.” The obscure quote immediately jars memories of the places, people or things to which I’ve pledged a return, a promise mostly unfulfilled as a lifetime passed and presented new challenges.

How many times have you been in the perfect spot on the perfect vacation and thought to yourself “I’d like to return to this place someday’. At the moment of utterance, it seemed impossible that you could live decades and not return to that location that provided respite, peace, tranquility that represented an escape from the rigors of everyday life. Letters to the Editor “Self-righteousness” is among the greatest problems that we face Dear Editor, I recently read the editorial in the Gazette lamenting those who often campaign for no abortions but offer little or no support for those living among us that are in severe need of our assistance and support. I congratulate the author in exposing this hypocrisy and selfrighteousness particularly, when ridicule can be so harsh. It came to mind that a quick look on the internet for a definition of self-righteousness would be beneficial. This is what Google said: “Self-righteous means “having or characterized by a certainty, especially an unfounded one, that one is totally correct or morally superior. Self-righteousness is accompanied by “indignation and complacency.” Then it went on quote Jeremy Affeldt, lecturer and former pitcher with the three-time World Series Champion San Francisco Giants: “The Bible describes the Sadducees as pretty self-righteous. Not “holy and righteous,” but “self-righteous.” The Sadducees believed they were holy and righteous, because they were very strict about keeping the law. As a result, they came across as self-righteous, because they judged others by their works.” We have become overwhelmed at our highest political and religious levels by those who are selfrighteous, who deny the truth, who lie and foster the same, who support prejudice and bigotry and encourage fear and hatred so that they can continue to accumulate vast power and personal wealth, and the foolish blindly follow. Someday, we may discover again that universal grace and mercy can overcome the darkness we seem to be fostering. George R Peterson Goochland

Bulldogs win 5th annual Ballin’ 4 a Cure game Goochland routs Nottoway 65-39 By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

Both teams linked arms together in one circle in the center of Goochland High School’s gymnasium. Coaches and players from both the Goochland and Nottoway boys basketball units wore colors symbolic of the kinds of cancers that have affected their lives in one way or another. A game was then played. And a loss was avenged – Goochland came back from narrowly falling to Nottoway 62-61 on Monday to defeat the Cougars that Friday, 65-39. But for head coach Preston Gordon and his Goochland Bulldogs boys basketball team, their fifth annual Ballin’ 4 a Cure benefit was about more than the game’s result. “Basketball tonight was a platform. It was an opportunity for us as a basketball team and us as players and coaches, managers, cheerleaders, band members – just as a community – to let everyone know that we’ve been touched by this awful disease that has affected so many families, but also [that] there have been families that have beaten cancer. There are survivors that want to tell their story,” Gordon said. “It’s just tough that it needs to be this way, but at the same time, the more that we can spread the word and get it out there, hopefully people will get checked. “Everybody might think that we live in a rich county, but there’s plenty of houses that don’t have running water and don’t have heat...a lot of times those are the individuals that maybe don’t have the financial assistance to go see the doctor on a regular basis. We need to step up and help out our neighbors and help out our community members.” When the teams were together before the game, Gordon told them that it’s going to be up to those young individuals to make sure their parents and grandparents are going

to the doctor and getting checked regularly. “A lot of older folks, they just don’t like to go to the doctor, and sometimes you see signs and you see some health going down, and if people will go to the doctor early, a lot of this can possibly be prevented,” Gordon said. “But it’s also just having the initiative to talk to your parents and talk to your grandparents about their health.” Cancer has impacted the lives of those within the Goochland basketball program. Former player and Goochland High School Class of 2017 alum Jack Twombly lost his mother to pancreatic cancer, Goochland coach AJ Nash lost his mother to lung cancer and Gordon found out that his dad had prostate cancer. Over the last four years, funds raised by Goochland High School’s Ballin’ 4 a Cure games have gone towards research for lung cancer and pancreatic cancer, to the Fire Fighter Cancer Foundation as part of Class of 2018 graduate Finley

Miers’ senior project and to St. Jude’s Research Hospital when Class of 2019 graduate Katie Waller, who lost her sister Samantha to brain cancer, took the benefit game as her senior project. The benefit has raised about $8,500 in that four-year span. This year, the proceeds from Friday’s fundraising event were marked to be split between research for prostate cancer and leukemia in honor of Agricultural Science teacher Danny Allen’s father, who is fighting prostate cancer, and mathematics teacher Scottie O’Neill’s father, who is fighting a form of leukemia.

Bouncing back from Monday’s loss After Quincy Snead took a pass from Goochland teammate Jack Hoffler and turned it into a go-ahead 3-pointer for an early 10-7 lead, the Bulldogs seized command of Friday’s game with a 6-0 burst, sparked by three takeaways, and never let it go. The first takeaway came right

on the heels of a steal made by Nottoway’s Willie Lawson. Snead took the ball right back from him on the defensive side, flipped the ball behind his back as he dribbled it down the left sideline and dished the

assist to junior Kameron Holman, who flew up and put the ball through the hoop as a defender rose up to pressure him. Holman and Snead

Goochland honors seniors By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

GOOCHLAND - With the team score firmly entrenched in Powhatan’s favor, Goochland senior Connor Duncan’s sole goal was to go out and get his individual win on Senior Night. The second team all-state offensive lineman in football was facing a first team all-region tight end in Micah Holt in the 220pound match of Wednesday’s dual, and Duncan’s head wrestling coach Mike Nadder figured that Holt had the advantage in wrestling experience. But Duncan, grabbing an early 2-0 lead on a reversal, stayed tough on top through the first two periods. And then, in the third, he delivered a crucial takedown that gave him insurance against Holt’s follow-up reversal and escape to tighten the match. Duncan grabbed an escape to lead 5-3 late in the third period, but Holt at that point could still tie the match and force overtime. Facing Duncan from the neutral stance with less than 10 seconds remaining in regulation, Holt

took a shot, and Duncan took advantage to swing around and get on top of Holt, cementing his win by decision with his lastsecond reversal for a 7-3 score. “I can’t say enough about him,” Nadder said of Duncan. “He is so inexperienced, but the way he’s wrestling, every match, he gets better and better, and it was obvious that his opponent had a lot more experience than him, but he has just really impressed us as coaches, how far he’s come along in such a short time. I feel like he’s got a good shot at the regional tournament to place high and possibly get to the state tournament, depends on what draw he might get.” Duncan joined teammate

John Summitt (120 pounds) in securing contested victories for Goochland, who overall lost the dual to Powhatan 58-15. Summitt wrestled aggressively and needed just 36 seconds to pin his Powhatan opponent. Despite the loss, Nadder was proud of how his Bulldogs wrestled against Powhatan. Goochland still had some wrestlers who were dealing with sickness. That was the case for Alex Thompson (182), who wrestled Powhatan’s Hayden Fitzsimmons but lost by pin in the first period. “He had a tough match tonight, and he wasn’t pleased with himself, but I was proud that

each took away a Nottoway possession after that, and 6-foot-7 sophomore J.B. Bell turned both steals into a putback and two free throws. The Bulldogs further padded their lead with an 8-0 run in the third quarter and took a mountain climb of a 52-28 advantage into the fourth. Snead, Holman and Bell all led Goochland in scoring with 20, 14 and 13 points, respectively. When Snead wasn’t going after the basket with the ball in his hands, he was finding a lot of success in going after the ball. The 5-foot-8 senior got big on defense, blocking four shots and hauling in a whopping nine steals, some of which he took to the house for layups. He also had six rebounds and four assists. “That doesn’t happen by luck. He is a very smart player defensively. He sees things a little bit differently than most players,” Gordon said of Snead. “And he’s got a quickness about him that is hard for other individuals to match. Every time he steps out on the floor, he’s got a chip on his shoulder...our kids feed off of him, and they see his energy level, it’s so high. He’s a fun one to watch.” Holman, continuing to flex his quickness and his aggressiveness on defense, added five rebounds and four steals. Bell showed his toughness when he drew the foul on a hard hit in the fourth quarter, made both free throws, took back the ball right underneath the basket on the Bulldogs’ scoring side, drew yet another foul and made the next two free throws. He also brought down five rebounds. His teammate Hoffler hauled in six rebounds. Prior to Friday’s rematch with Nottoway, Goochland had just finished playing six games in eight days. Monday’s first game against the Cougars was in that stretch. Goochland had played and beaten Clover Hill just two days before on Saturday; Gordon noted the importance of having a day of prep before game night, and with a Monday game, sometimes Saturday is that prep day. And while it doesn’t have to be a whole lot, sometimes you just need to walkthrough things, watch a little bit of film and get shots up, he said, adding that a record doesn’t always reflect a team’s ath-

letic ability. Nottoway stood at 6-11 after Friday, and Prince Edward, who was 4-13 after Thursday, beat Buckingham, the second-seeded team in the James River District behind Goochland. In the case of Monday’s game, Gordon said they didn’t do a very good job defensively in one quarter, but on Friday, the Bulldogs never relented, and they were bolstered by a lively home game atmosphere accentuated by Goochland High School’s band and the fans in attendance. The Bulldogs also routed Prince Edward last Tuesday 74-53. Snead poured in 18 points and added nine rebounds, eight assists and five steals. Holman double-doubled with 17 points and 10 rebounds and Bell scored 13 points and added seven rebounds. Goochland (14-2 after Sunday) was scheduled to rematch Fluvanna on the road on Monday; the team will next host Buckingham in a huge home matchup tonight at 7 p.m. and will head to Central Lunenburg for a 7 p.m. game tomorrow. “Those are games you’ve got to be locked in for,” Gordon said. “If you want to control your destiny, you’ve got to bring the intensity every game and play four quarters.”

Goochland GBB picks up sixth straight victory The Goochland girls basketball team routed Prince Edward 50-30 last Tuesday for its sixth straight win. Jalyn Burns double-doubled with 18 points and 12 rebounds, Victoria Lopez double-doubled with 13 points and 13 rebounds and Gabby Ragone added 8 points, seven assists, four steals and four rebounds. The Bulldogs (12-5) play at Buckingham tonight at 7 p.m. and will host Central Lunenburg tomorrow at 7 p.m.

Swimmers earn wins at SwimRVA Senior Night meet Staff Report

RICHMOND - Three Goochland swimmers, including senior Caleb McCaskill, took home first-place finishes in Thursday’s collective Senior Night swim meet for Goochland, Colonial Heights, Lancaster and Maggie Walker Governor’s School at SwimRVA. McCaskill kept a clear lead in the boys 100-yard breaststroke on the way to turning in a winning swim of 1:16.46. He finished 4.58 seconds ahead of runner-up Dalton Jenkins from Colonial Heights. Goochland’s Jack Clarke took third in the event in 1:20.03. While McCaskill didn’t place in the top three of the boys 50 freestyle, he did win his heat in 25.90. Sophomore Anneliese Rogerson swam neck-and-neck with Maggie Walker’s Ala Killen in a blistering race at the front of the field in the girls 100 breaststroke. She touched the wall 0.24 of a second ahead of Killen to win the race in 1:13.33. Rogerson also swam second in the girls 200 individual medley (IM) in 2:17.99. Junior Skylar Dacey earned the first win of the meet for Goochland while swimming the girls’ 200 freestyle. She notched a 2:13.27 and finished 7.16 seconds ahead of Maggie Walker’s Claire Bierly. With Thursday’s Senior Night meet, Goochland celebrated the contributions of four seniors: McCaskill, Richard Hardy, Sophie Summitt and Anna Kate Wirsing.

Hardy and McCaskill joined Brandon Avram and Joe Hardman in swimming second in the boys 200 medley relay (1:58.39) and third in the 200 free relay (1:42.50). Hardy also swam third in the boys 200 IM in 2:44.45. Summitt helped Rogerson, Dacey and Bayleigh Allen take second in the girls 200 medley relay (2:04.33) and also helped Rogerson, Dacey and Jessica Valdez finish third in the final heat of the 200 free relay (1:52.81). Wirsing delivered a fourth-place swim in the girls 200 free in 2:22.09.

Bulldogs win 12 events in regular season finale Competing at its home pool in Saturday’s regular season finale hosted by Powhatan at Goochland YMCA, Goochland won the boys meet overall, 91-45 over Orange and 90-8 over Powhatan. Orange won the girls meet overall, defeating Goochland 152-95, BSH 143-26 and Powhatan 139-119.5. But out of the 22 individual events, Goochland won 12, Orange won seven and Powhatan won three. Rogerson, Summitt, Dacey and Abby Pillion gave the Bulldogs their first win of Saturday’s meet with a first-place swim of 2:08.44 in the girls 200 medley relay. Hardman and Luul Mintesinot finished 1-2 in the boys 200 free in 2:24.07 and 3:08.71, respectively. Dacey won the girls 200 free in 2:11.47,

and Wirsing took third in the event in 2:22.21. Rogerson dominated the girls 200 IM in 2:28.75. Avram beat Orange County’s Latham Browning to the wall in the boys 50 free by .02 of a second with a first-place time of 25.82, and Hardy, right in the mix, took third in 25.90. Pillion edged past runner-up Madalynn Thompson in the girls 50 free with a winning time of 30.22. Thompson swam a 30.69. The Bulldogs swept the top four positions in the boys 100 free as Hardman won in 58.37, McCaskill took runner-up in 58.91, Avram rounded out the podium in 1:01.95 and Hardy finished fourth in the 100 in 1:02.20. Hardy, Hardman, McCaskill and Avram then won the boys 200 free relay in 1:44.52 while Goochland’s Clarke, Mintesinot, Garrett Eastwood and Lucas Edwards took third in 2:06.13. Wirsing, Rogerson, Summitt and Dacey won the girls 200 free relay in 1:54.01. Dacey won the girls 100 back in 1:10.19, and McCaskill and Clarke finished 1-2 in the boys 100 breast in 1:18.44 and 1:20.72, respectively. Edwards, Mintesinot, Luke Michaels and Gavin Hazelton added the overall win in the boys 400 free relay in 4:57.87. Wirsing and Summitt swam second and third in the girls 100 breast in 1:24.77 and 1:26.21, respectively. Additional second-place finishes for Goochland went to Michaels (boys 100 back, 1:22.88), Summitt (girls 100 free, 1:08.15), Rogerson (girls 100 butterfly, 1:06.51) and Hazelton (boys 100 fly, 1:39.44).

From top right, clockwise: Senior Caleb McCaskill swims his way to first place in the boys 100-yard breaststroke in 1:16.46 in Thursday’s Senior Night swim meet featuring Goochland, Colonial Heights, Lancaster County and Maggie Walker Governor’s School at SwimRVA; senior Richard Hardy swims the backstroke in the boys 200 individual medley; senior Sophie Summitt swims in the girls 100 butterfly; senior Anna Kate Wirsing swims in the girls 200 freestyle.

Wrestling continued from >8 he went out there...for the team,” Nadder said of Thompson. Blake Smith (126) took a loss by pin in 35 seconds to two-time state placer Sean Hall, who has won multiple invitational championships this year. “We knew what we were up against, but he

went after him,” Nadder said of Smith. Jon Daly (170) took a 10-0 setback by major decision to last weekend’s Arrowhead Invitational 170-pound champion Hans Rehme. Daly did, however, show some fight at the end of the match. “I think if we could’ve had another minute...I think he might’ve been able to score some points, possibly pick up what he needed to win,” Nadder said of Daly.

Goochland celebrated its nine seniors, including Daly, Duncan, Thompson, Luke Agee (160), Kieran McCaul (170), Ethan Ford (195), Zane Cerbo (heavyweight) and four-year managers Bre Johnson and Rilie Bass. Nadder had very high praise for Johnson and Bass, who hold the longest tenures in the Goochland wrestling program next to Nadder himself. “I can’t say enough about Bre and Rilie,” Nadder said. “Together with my daughter who

is in college now, they were our original managers and they were known throughout the district; if there was a question...they always came to the Goochland girls because their books were always right.” The Bulldogs with last Wednesday’s dual concluded their regular season and will compete in the Class 3, Region B championships the weekend of Feb. 14-15 at Independence High School in Loudoun County.

I confided in my friend that somehow I knew this would be my last trip to the Keys. The impending responsibility of three small children didn’t include Pirate Punch at Captain Tony’s. You can never go back. What’s left is only a memory and a word to the wise for those who, as we speak, sit on a bar stool in Captain Tony’s Saloon sipping Pirate Punch under a hanging tree and pledging eternal returns to the once unique hole in the wall watering hole ... and to anyone else willing to listen. Savor the moment …. of that first rush of ocean air, that sunset in Negril, that hike in the Tetons, or that special beach with pink sand, or whatever is your moment in time, slice of Nirvana in a place to which you unfaithfully pledged a return.Live it like it may be your only opportunity for Nirvana, for the truth reveals that, in many cases, once is indeed enough.

Southern fishing village to which he had escaped was only a memory and the island had sold its collective evil and eclectic soul to the devil in the form of wealthy investors who snatched up every piece of available property and built luxury accommodations for a new breed of Conchs. It was my last visit to the a string of islands still close to my heart and vivid in my mind, and my Florida excursions are now centered around Tampa with relatives. Although the sun is warm and the water crystal clear, I see few reminders of my days on the Keys. The days are shorter, and the nights are tame and early ending, the lines on my face much deeper. And maybe Du Marnier was right.

Chilly weather doesn’t have to derail workouts Contributed report

W

orkouts are a part of many people’s daily routines. Some look forward to their exercise sessions, while others only commit after finding ways to make them as enjoyable as possible. For people who don’t enjoy working out indoors, finding ways to exercise in the great outdoors can provide the incentives necessary to commit to daily workouts. Exercising outdoors is a great way to get some fresh air, but what about those days when the weather isn’t so inviting? Lengthy periods of cold or inclement weather, which is common in fall and winter in many parts of the world, can interrupt daily routines and derail one’s fitness goals. However, there are ways to overcome inclement weather so outdoor workouts can be enjoyed year-round.

require more time to warm up in cold weather than they do in warm weather. The Canadian Chiropractic AssociationTM notes that many people feel as though there muscles are noticeably stiffer in cold weather than in warm weather. This can make people who exercise in such weather more vulnerable to musculoskeletal injuries. One way to reduce that risk is to warm up for longer periods of time than you might in warm weather. For example, runners might want to walk slowly outdoors for several minutes before they begin jogging. Doing so can loosen and warm up muscles that are naturally stiff in cold weather.

Dress appropriately. The gear outdoor exercise enthusiasts wear can go a long way toward making cold weather workouts more enjoyable and safe. Layering clothing during cold weather workouts allows people to maintain steady body temperatures throughout a workout by removing Warm up for longer peri- layers as they heat up if they need to. ods of time. Muscles typically Even though it’s cold, your body will

still sweat, so look for a wicking material that draws moisture away from your body. This is especially important for your core, as blood pulls toward the chest and abdominal area, making this the warmest part of your body. Focus on keeping the extremities, including fingers, toes and nose, warm with materials like gloves and tall socks. Face masks can be helpful to cover the nose and neck, but make sure they’re made from breathable materials that won’t hold moisture. Reconsider your footwear and other support to improve balance. Frozen ground is not as easy to traverse as unfrozen ground, so look for footwear that provides added traction. Winter running shoes that come with studded soles might be necessary. Trekking poles also can help hikers gain traction on frozen or snow-covered trails. Outdoor workouts don’t have to end when the weather gets cold. A few simple tricks can help people exercise outdoors throughout the year. — MetroCreative
