Board grants CUP for Hermitage Rd. cell tower project

By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Despite strong opposition from a number of residents living near the site of a planned communications tower on Hermitage Road, county supervisors on Feb. 4 delivered a 3-2 decision in favor of granting a Conditional Use

Permit (CUP) for the project. The permit had been requested by South Carolinabased Beacon Towers, and was required before construction could begin on the 199-foot communication tower at 966 Hermitage Road in Goochland. And while residents in recent months had expressed concerns ranging from the

tower’s potential impact on property values to whether it was needed at all, Beacon Towers representative Jonathan Yates insisted to board members—reiterating statements he had made at the Planning Commission hearing for the project last month — that the chosen location is ideal for such a project.

noise, color, fumes, vibration or glare.” Many who spoke during the citizens’ comment period clearly disagreed with Yates’ assessment, asking why they should have to look at what they described as an eyesore when they already have adequate cell service in their area. “I don’t care if they put up a cell tower, but I want it in a commercial area,” said Barbara Hughes. “It does not have to be put where the residents who moved to Goochland to be in a rural area have to see it.” Ultimately board members John Lumpkins, Neil

Spoonhower and Don Sharpe voted to approve the CUP, while board chairwoman Susan Lascolette and Ken Peterson voted against it. “The tower will clearly offer extra coverage,” said Peterson. “The question is, is that the right land use here in this district?” Among other requirements, the CUP stipulates that the tower must not interfere with any existing communications equipment, and must be neutral in color. The CUP is valid until 2024, and will expire 90 days after the tower is no longer in use.

Small but mighty: Yes, you too can start a garden from seed By Virginia McCown Goochland/Powhatan Master Gardener

In the 1982 movie “Poltergeist” Carol Anne Freeling turned from the TV and eerily proclaimed, “They’re Here!” That’s right. They ARE here. Whether or not you welcome them, the seed catalogs have arrived. These little time capsules of life — seeds — help with the great disconnect we feel each winter. Grocery store produce is never as good as the fresh greens, fruits and vegetables we can grow in our own gardens — whether they be large plots or simply a few containers.

Basics of gardening with seeds Choosing seed varieties from catalogs can be overwhelming. Heirlooms or hybrids? Heirlooms are varieties grown from seed saved from last year’s crop or passed from family to friend or friend to friend. Simply put, their characteristics remain true every planting, every year. Hybrid seeds are developed for particular traits to

grow better in our gardens such as for disease resistance. The plants will resemble the catalog description when planted the first year. The seeds can be saved, but the characteristics for the second year will be different from the first year. The tomato plants grown from saved hybrid seeds could turn out to be cherry-size or beef steak-size, for example. There is no uniformity from generation to generation. If you’ve planted an edible garden before, take some time to honestly assess what went well and what failed last season. If you grew more than one variety of tomato, which variety did best? Which didn’t? Was the quality and quantity satisfactory? How much space did the plants need? Was sprawl too much for your garden or yard to contain? And finally — and most importantly — were the varieties you chose worth the hard work and effort? A transplanted gardener from another state or country will find gardening isn’t quite the same as it was

“back home.” We can grow many things here that we couldn’t in other regions. Yet at the same time the climate in Central Virginia is challenging to many cultivars. Not all vegetables tolerate our summer heat and humidity. For those born and raised here, foreign insect varieties and blights, uncommon 20 or 30 years ago, have also made an impact. With summer droughts becoming more common, consider vegetable varieties more suitable for growing in containers. They can be used in small garden plots as well. Tomato cultivars resistant to early or late blight — in my own experience — also prove more successful than heirloom varieties. There are those that claim the taste isn’t nearly as good. Well ... some new disease resistant cultivars have improved over the years. The seeds may cost a little more, but at the end of the season, if your garden is still pumping out tomatoes and your neighbors’ plants are withered and dead ... yep, you can pat yourself on the back. That extra initial investment for a hybrid seed paid off well. Yet don’t diss the heirlooms. “Box Car Willy,” a large red tomato, as well as “Moon and Stars,” a watermelon cultivar, are two heirloom varieties I’ve grown for years in my own garden. Their innate resistance to blight and disease continues to amaze. How can you learn which plant and vegetable varieties work best in Central Virginia? The answer is easy. Virginia Tech as well at the Virginia Cooperative Extension have the information readily available — and it’s free. There are also a few handy websites:

Vegetables Recommended for Virginia (https://pubs.ext. vt.edu/426/426-480/426-480. html) Vegetable Planting Guide and Recommended Planting Dates (https://pubs.ext.vt.edu/ content/dam/pubs_ext_vt_ edu/426/426-331/426-331_ pdf.pdf).

Avoid the third rail in gardening Gardeners often hear people talk about soil pH. If your vegetable plants didn’t yield the anticipated bounty last

season, could soil be to blame? Possibly. Most fruits and vegetables grow best in neutral soil with a pH of about 6.2-7.2 However, blueberry bushes, azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias prefer an acidic or a low pH level. Have a new garden plot? Don’t argue. Get a soil test. This is a cost cut you can’t afford. Soil tests kits with instructions are available at Virginia Cooperative Extension offices. The basic price is only $10. Each Virginia county has an office (Goochland (804)5565841 or Powhatan (804) 598-

5640). The soil test not only provides information on the soil, pH, and available levels of phosphorous, but on potassium and other essential elements or nutrients. The Virginia Tech Soil Test report also offers instructions on how to adjust or modify problems with the soil. Enjoy seed selecting while you can. Planting time is only a few months away! Letter to the Editor

Message in a bottle

When need is greatest, Americans come running Dear Editor, Concerning your column on helpers in hard times ( “Want inspiration? Look for the helpers,” Jan. 16), it reminded me of a photo I had seen shortly after 9/11. It seems in small towns and large cities Americans just show up with blankets and chicken soup or hard hats and tool boxes. It has been said that America is great because America is good. That goodness is best demonstrated by those “2nd responders” who just show up in hard times with whatever they have. God Bless Americans. Matthew J. McNally Richmond

After impeachment, no winners to be found By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Consider this: If your local Cineplex was showing a movie that you knew was probably going to be awful, and you suspected you already knew how the movie ended anyway — and it was going to cost several million dollars to see it — would you consider going, or would you just skip it? As I wrote this, the news that Donald Trump had been acquitted by the United States Senate was just breaking, bringing a merciful

end to a process as excruciating in its tedium as it was foregone in its conclusion. Had it been a movie, it surely would have bombed. The incoherent plot, the one-dimensional characters — all of it cringeworthy from beginning to end. Then there was the dialogue, the seemingly endless hours of monotonous and repetitive testimony aimed at illuminating a fact that both the President’s supporters and his detractors have always known: strict adherence to rules is just not Trump’s thing. The President said he was asking

the Ukrainians for an investigation not for his own personal gain, but because he wanted to help get rid of corruption. This is akin to a child getting caught with his hand in the cookie jar, and saying “Oh, this? I was really just getting this cookie for you.” It’s about as believable when a child says it as it is when the President does, the only difference being that when the President does it the entire country gets a TimeOut. And that, in a nutshell, is the truly disgraceful denouement to the entire impeachment process. It

wasn’t that the Democrats ended up looking foolish, or that Donald Trump’s misdeeds were exposed. No, what truly stokes the fury furnace is the sheer amount of money, time, energy and resources that could have been spent on far more meaningful work. There was no outcome here that would have been good for the American people, no end that could have justified these means. Thanks to leaders on both sides of the aisle taking divisiveness and party politics to new, previously unseen depths, it seems we all lost.

A friend is tasked with coming up with a unique and catchy phrase each week to adorn a sign outside of his church. It’s one of many billboards that allow people to express their own brand of enlightenment or redemption, delivered with a smile. “Fight Truth Decay” was his team’s message for this week and is especially timely, but it’s only one in a long series of witticisms they’ve displayed over the years. Some of the things I’ve seen on the side of the road, in the words of Gary Busey, you wouldn’t want to paint on an overpass, but I always appreciate a dose of down-home humor delivered on a sign with movable letters with no apostrophes. I often think that some of the authors regularly publish thoughts on these original message boards that they might not normally express. For example, I’m not sure the guy who wrote “My wife says I never listen to her, or something like that.” would vocalize that same thought at dinner with his spouse. And, sometimes, these signs convey timely updates that otherwise might go unnoticed. A Baptist church posted, “Whoever stole our AC units, keep one. It’s hot where you’re going.” Another church sign sternly warned, “Honk if you love Jesus. Text while driving if you want to meet Him.” El Arroys in Texas has become nationally known for its posts on a small sign outside its restaurant. They’ve taken a philosophical approach to movable wit stating, “Life is just a series of obstacles preventing you from taking a nap.” Another Arroys’ post read “Treat your Mom to a Margarita. You’re probably the reason she drinks.” see Ridolphi > page 7

residents as a way to meet its mission of providing health care and basic human services to Goochland residents in need. The goal for this service is to assist households with income under $56,000 to maximize their tax returns and minimize their tax burden. The organaization also strives to assist lower income households by helping them to utilize the money they

would spend on tax services for other basic needs. In 2019, GoochlandCares volunteers assisted 157 household prepare and file their taxes. In 2020, the group anticipates assisting up to 250 households. Ridolphi continued from >6 A veterinary office displayed a message that appealed to more than one species of life. “It’s all fun and games until someone ends up in a cone.” Another vet wrote, “Free belly rubs with exam. Sorry, pets only!” And some signs fall into that too much information category. “Septic tanks pumped, swimming pools filled. Not same truck.” conjures up a vision most of us could live without. Those roadside signs are a part of Americana that we mostly take for granted. But, let’s face it, we’ve all chuckled at some of these messages as we drive along a highway. It reminds us that most of us have opinions and there is a variety of ways to express them. While many of us would not want our printed words posted on the side of a roadway, it’s important to appreciate the thought and effort behind these posts.

7

And it’s also encouraging to note that in a world where Facebook and Twitter seem to rule the day when it comes to personal interactions, signs that allow changing messages are making a comeback. Some even appear in digital displays offer the same options, but, personally, I prefer the uneven spacing, misspelled words and the sometimes errant W replaced with an upside down M of the message board variety. Maybe it’s the small town in me that still enjoys an original thought placed strategically so everyone in the neighborhood sees it, or appreciates a thinly veiled message on morality or eternal life scrolled in stenciled letters. Yes, I suppose it’s true that all of us have an opinion, and somehow it makes all of us more emboldened when we get the opportunity to express it. Lest we forget the famous words of Simon and Garfunkel: “The words of the prophets are written on a subway wall.”

Jesus Is the Answer! Mark 10:45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” But what is the question?!?! Disciples were squabbling about greatness and position (verse 37). They didn’t understand Jesus. He didn’t come to guarantee a great career, retirement portfolio, long life or perfect health and wealth. His purpose was far more important. He came to free us from the prison of sin and condemnation by paying the ransom we cannot pay. The cost was His life and blood on that cross. Salvation — is that THE question you want Him to answer for you? (Mark 16:15-16).

Rogerson 1st, 8 Bulldogs qualify for states By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

RICHMOND – After diving into the water to begin the final heat of the girls 100-yard breaststroke in Friday’s Class 3, Region B championships at SwimRVA, Goochland High School swimmer Anneliese Rogerson quickly surged into a clear lead. But when the race came down to the last 25 yards, Maggie Walker Governor School’s Susanna Kast and Independence High School’s Samantha Zacarias were right there in the mix, creating a diagonal line of three swimmers battling for the victory. But the way Rogerson sees it, she’s “worked too hard to give up now.” She stayed the course and touched the wall in

the same place where she began the race – first – to win the regional championship in the girls 100 breaststroke. It was a huge win for the sophomore, who not only qualified for the Class 3 state swimming championships, but did so in Goochland’s first academic year moving up from Class 2 to Class 3. She also finished ahead of swimmers from Richmond’s Maggie Walker, Loudoun County’s Independence and Falls Church’s George Mason High School. “It felt really good,” she said. “I’m really proud of myself.” Both of her individual swims were best times. In addition to dropping nearly 2 seconds in the girls 100 breaststroke to win it in 1:11.42, Rogerson swam a fifth-place time of 1:01.56 in the

girls 100 butterfly. She carved nearly 5 seconds off of her seed time in the fly. “I worked really hard in the season and I try my very best every single swim in practice,” Rogerson said, “and I just made it my goal to drop in this meet so that I can do really well in states.” She’s focused on working on her technique and on working hard in every practice leading up to the Class 3 state swimming championships at SwimRVA on Friday, Feb. 21. Skylar Dacey joined Rogerson in qualifying for states and also in representing Goochland in the individual swimming state competitions. The junior joyfully reacted and smiled after delivering a blistering third-place swim of 2:04.51 in the girls 200 free-

style. She slashed nearly 7 seconds off of her seed time. Dacey was also 2.69 seconds faster than her previous best in the 100 free as she placed sixth in the event in 56.96. Dacey and Rogerson earlier in the meet paired up with sophomore Bayleigh Allen and senior Sophie Summitt to qualify for states in the girls 200 medley relay with a fourth-place time of 2:02.03, which was 0.8 of a second faster than their previous best. On the boys’ side, seniors Caleb McCaskill and Richard Hardy, junior Brandon Avram and sophomore Joe Hardman swam their way into the state competition with a fourthplace time of 1:53.61 in the boys 200 medley relay. They improved on their previous best by 3.83 seconds.

Bulldogs take tough home loss to Buckingham By Weldon Bradshaw Richmond Times-Dispatch

GOOCHLAND - After leading 26-24 at the half, the Bulldogs ran into a third-quarter blitzkrieg inflicted upon them by the Buckingham Knights, who ravaged the home team 19-2 during that decisive eight minutes en route to a 65-48 victory on Thursday. “We did not shoot the ball very well. We took some quick shots,” said Goochland coach Preston Gordon. “Give credit to Buckingham. Solid defense. The other part is, they shot lights out in the second half. That means our defense has to get better. “In the second half, they played at a high level. We did not.” During that rough stretch for the Bulldogs, the Knights (17-3) shot 8-for-13 and forced Goochland (14-4) into 1-for-12 shooting and created nine turnovers, many of which resulted in chip-shot buckets. The Bulldogs led by 2 at the half, but the visitors opened the third quarter with a free throw by James DeVore and a layup by Damorrious Holman after he stole an inbounds pass at midcourt. J.B. Bell answered with a short floater from the paint after a sweet spin move to cut the difference to 29-28. It would be 10 minutes and seven costly turnovers later, however, before the Bulldogs scored again. The points came on a Quincy

Snead layup at 6:02 of the fourth period, cutting what earlier was a modest difference to 50-30. By that time, the Knights had scored 21 straight points, including two NBA-length 3-pointers by Amari Toney, who racked up a team-leading 20 points. His teammates Gerry Towey and Damorrious Holman chipped in 15 and 10 points, respectively. “We’re a defensive-minded team,” said Knights coach Taylor Boyers. “Defense is key for us. Our defense leads to our offense. In that third quarter, we were able to make a run. “They have some tough players. You just have to work against them. We played man mostly, but we mixed up our defenses some. We paid attention to detail tonight.” In the second half, Boyers’ squad hit 16 of 24 shots from the field. Goochland connected on just 6 of 27. Snead led the Bulldogs with 24 points. Bell, a 6-foot-7 sophomore, added 14. While little went well for Goochland after the teams returned from the locker room, Gordon’s players continued to push the pace, and they hit the boards as if the game were on the line. “They’re a good team,” said Snead, a senior. “We started to play their game. That got their intensity up, and we tried to adjust. “I love the guys on my team. We fought as Nick Vandeloecht/Goochland Gazette hard as we could tonight. Now, we just have to Buckingham’s Damorrious Holman (3) attempts to intercept a Goochland pass to Kyin Carter (23), who would turn that pass into a late-game layup in Thursday’s game at Goochland High School. bounce back.”

Goochland’s girls basketball team earned its seventh straight victory and remained unbeaten in the James River District with a narrow 45-42 triumph over Buckingham on the road on Thursday. Victoria Lopez, a 6-foot-1 senior, double-doubled with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and junior Gabby Ragone assembled 11 points, five assists and three rebounds. The Bulldogs put together their biggest quarter in the first eight minutes to lead

on the road to Fluvanna last Monday to even the series in the rekindled rivalry between the two Class 3 teams at 1-1. Kam Holman led the Bulldogs in the loss with 27 points and added six rebounds and five steals. Quincy Snead made 14 points and had four assists, and J.B.
