Recently, the American Cancer Society (ACS) announced in its annual report that deaths from cancer dropped by 2.2 percent in 2016-2017, and that there has been a 29 percent drop in deaths due to cancer since 1991. This is wonderful news, but there is still a lot of work to be done. The ACS study estimates that 1.8 million people will be diagnosed with cancer and 606,520 people will die from cancer in the US in 2020. The Relay For Life of Goochland invites all Goochland, Fluvanna and Louisa residents to join them this year as they con-

At a certain point, Goochland resident Sandy Hensley realized she was fighting a losing battle. For several months last year, she and her husband had made it their mission to help clean up the roughly twomile stretch of roadway between their home on Route 609 and Broad Street. Picking carefully through steep roadside ditches, they collected bag upon bag of discarded fast food see Trash> 2

packaging, plastic bottles and beer cans. Eventually, health issues forced them to suspend their effort, Hensley explained, and it wasn’t long before the trash returned with a vengeance. “Something needs to be done,” Hensley said, though she admits she doesn’t know what the best course of action is. “I don’t know how you get people to stop littering, it just seems like they don’t care,” Hensley said. “It’s truly sad.” Hensley isn’t alone in her efforts to try and take on what is becoming a hot button issue. Many other residents have also taken it upon themselves to tackle the trash problem in the areas where they live. Michelle Matts and her children spent a recent Friday working to clean up a three-
mile stretch of Three Chopt Rd, collecting 20 bags of litter and 18 tires. For Hensley, Matts and others, pitching in to collect what gets pitched out is something they do out of a desire to help maintain the scenic beauty of the place they call home. But while committed groups of residents willing to collect trash on their own time certainly helps, it does little to address the root cause of a problem with which county leaders continue to struggle. Goochland County administrator John Budesky discussed the issue during a Board of Supervisors meeting on Feb. 4, assuring residents that the county was not turning a blind eye to the trash problem. In addition to a Feb. 22 community clean-up event, the first of several that have been planned, Budesky said the county is continuing to pursue whatever solutions they can. Some have suggested tight-
er monitoring and enforcement would help prevent would-be litterers from tossing trash, while others point out that actually catching someone in the act of throwing a bottle out the window is no easy task. Some of those who contribute to the trash problem may not even realize it: Along Whitehall Road, for example, a good bit of roadside garbage likely comes from vehicles on the way to the dump without properly secured loads. For newly elected county supervisor Neil Spoonhower, fighting roadside trash was not among the things he expected to see as a top priority among his new constituents. He soon realized, however, just how significant the problem is. “It’s in front of us every day,” Spoonhower said, and has seemed to be even worse lately. Spoonhower said he favors an approach similar to that see Clean up> 3

Creation Genesis 1:31 “God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.” After six 24 hour days of creative power God completed His work. “Evening and morning” is used in the Hebrew to speak of a day, not an eon. Jesus fully, and without apology or modification, endorsed the Genesis creation account as recorded. He said “But from the beginning of creation, God MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE.” (Mark 10:6) The philosophy of evolution is not compatible with the truth of God’s Word. In fact, there was no such thing as death before Adam and Eve! We know that from Romans 5:12.

Moniker madness: Some otherwise nice plants have strangest of names Billy Balls, Beetlebungs, and Hen Widdies are only some of the weird and quirky names history has given to plants and trees in our landscaping. Here are a few more:
Sneezewort Yarrow

Because of the prevalence of similar species in ancient times, it is sometimes referred to as a living fossil. How did it get its English language name? In 1850, Sir William Molesworth, the owner of a young tree in Cornwall, Britain, showed it to a group of friends. Barrister Benthamist Charles Austin remarked, “It would puzzle a monkey to climb that.” Araucaria araucana was elevated to stardom as Captain Gregg’s prized specimen in the 1947 classic movie, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.
Speaking of sneezing, Achillea ptarmica, the sneezewort, sneezeweed, bastard pellitory, European pellitory, fairmaid-of-France, goose tongue, wild pellitory, or white tansy, is a European species of herbaceous perennial once used as sneezing powder. Along for the ride: New program to offer viewers a chance to see ‘good’ happen around the world By Roslyn Ryan Editor
How often has this happened to you: You’re watching the news, or reading a newspaper, and you come across something that just doesn’t seem right. Maybe someone is being taken advantage of, or perhaps a dangerous situation is being allowed to remain unresolved and people are getting hurt. So you look at the television or the paper in your hand, and say, to no one in particular, “Wow, somebody should really do something about this.” Admittedly, I do this sometimes. Ok, I do it a lot. The “somebody” I am referring to, of course, is always someone better connected than I am, with
deeper pockets and more free time. Someone with the right experience and with the needed skill-set to be able to affect the change that is so desperately needed. Never mind that there have been countless examples throughout history of ordinary people who have made a tremendous impact simply by stepping in to do what others would not. They did not always have special tools or skills, and they often weren t born into wealth or privilege. In fact, the thing most of these people seem to have in common is that they were simply not afraid to try. Last week, the Richmond Times-Dispatch featured a wonderful column by Bill Lohmann about a new series set to begin airing on PBS in April. The program, titled “The Good
Road”, is a travel show of sorts — only the focus in this case is centered on extraordinary people rather than just far-flung and exotic locations. To be sure, creators Earl Bridges and Craig Martin do get to visit some of the most fascinating corners of the Earth, but their journey, they explain, is cleverly termed an exercise in “philanthropology.” Through their own unique lens, the two endeavor to connect viewers with the work of activists who otherwise would almost certainly remain unknown to the wider world. The fact that Bridges and Martin manage to find ordinary people stepping into harm’s way and helping others will probably not surprise too many people: Not to disparage in any way the good work that well-known people do,
but I’d be willing to wager that for every Bill Gates or Bono there are 10,000 people whose names will never make the papers but who are nevertheless changing the world every day with their compassion and their grit. I’m excited to see the show, and have a feeling it will leave viewers with the sense that they too can have an impact. Watching the trailer, I couldn’t help but recall an oft-quoted line from the famed anthropologist Margaret Mead, one of my own personal heroes and someone who would probably have loved “The Good Road.” “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world,” Mead said. “Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

Too old to be POTUS? Possibly so By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
If you blinked your eye, you may have missed it, but it’s presidential primary time in the Commonwealth, and on Tuesday, thousands of Virginians added their two cents to what seems to be an ever-increasing and confusing question of just who will oppose our incumbent president in November. Considering my status as a maturing member of an aging America, you may thing I’d be thrilled with the prospect of a pair of plus 70-year-olds vying for the top spot in the nation — but I’m not. Unlike the people running this year, most of them older than Bill Clinton, I’ve learned that with age comes, yes, some added amount of wisdom. But, I’ve also learned that, as years click off, limitations become more apparent. I’ve also noticed that the ones affected by this inevitable change in skill-sets are often the last ones to acknowledge the hands of time stand still for no one. Add to that equation, a job that demands the most from the youngest of candidates, and one might reasonably ask if the job might be done better by a younger person. I say yes. I first voted in 1968, and if there is one constant in our American political arena, it’s the before and after photos of the, so far, men, who have accepted the challenge. Not a one of them has survived those photos that clearly show the strain of the job, the immense daily grind of pressure and politics that takes a toll on all who endure it. Even the youngest of candidates have displayed the wrinkled lines of experience that only the White House can provide. I must admit our current president has perhaps shown the least see Letters > page 13

In addition to health care, we provide 10 other services to keep our neighbors safe, fed, and warm and bring hope to those in need. Recently, the expansion of Virginia’s Medicaid program has made healthcare accessible to many Goochland neighbors who were uninsured and relied on our clinic for their medical care. In thoughtful response to these changes, we have increased our eligibility threshold from 200 percent to 300 percent above the Federal Poverty level for medical only for Goochland residents without health insurance. Along with increasing access to our medical clinic for Goochland residents, it became apparent that we had the capacity to open our clinic doors to provide care (medical only) to those nearby (Fluvanna, Louisa & Cumberland) in greatest need. This means our other services (Food Pantry, Clothes Closet, Financial Assistance, Critical Home Repair, Mental Health care, Emergency Shelter, Case Management, Medical Transportation, , ESL & GED

As a grateful steward of the community support that has made our success possible, I am writing to clarify that GoochlandCares is still, at its heart, serving Goochland. I believe GoochlandCares reflects the best of our unique, compassionate community. At the center, are your readers, hundreds of donors and volunteers sharing so much to improve the lives of neighbors. Please know that the limited expansion of medical clinic services to underserved in outlying counties does not shift the focus of our efforts. Grateful in Goochland, Sally K. In final game, Quincy Snead nets 1,000th point By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
GOOCHLAND – When he stepped onto the court for Tuesday’s Class 3, Region B home quarterfinal alongside his Goochland Bulldogs, senior Quincy Snead thought he was about 6 or 8 points away from achieving a milestone that relatively few high school basketball players get to reach. Bur when he hit the 3-pointer for his first basket of the game, he saw his head coach Preston Gordon and others jumping up. That’s when he knew he had netted his 1,000th career point. “It was a great feeling,” he said. “It was a tough shot, so it felt good.” The accomplishment, four years in the making, was another notch in the belt of a multisport standout who’s been playing both basketball and football since he was 5 years old. He’s been a part of a Bulldogs football program that over the past four years assembled a 51-5 record, reached two state semifinals and played in a state championship game. He helped the Goochland boys basketball

team go 80-22 in four years and make history across the 201718 and 2018-19 seasons. The Bulldogs in 2018 went the furthest they had ever gone at that point – the state quarterfinals – and then topped that mark in 2019 when they reached the state semifinals. Snead also helped each team win two regional championships, and he contributed to the Bulldogs winning the 2018-19 James River District boys basketball regular season
and tournament titles. In his senior football season, he totaled 433 yards and eight touchdowns on 51 carries as well as 259 yards on 24 catches. Across his four years on the basketball court, the 5-foot-9 point guard was able to make plays wherever he was needed. He finished his high school basketball career with 1,007 points, 486 rebounds, 323 assists and 278 steals. “He was our leader this year,
and he’s done so much for us,” Gordon said. “A lot of the success we’ve had in these past four years is a tribute to what he’s been able to do as a point guard.” When it came to Snead’s ability to handle the basketball and pressure opposing players, sometimes he’d just get under their skin, Gordon said. “It’s almost like he’s just nerve-racking because of his defense and how he plays the game,” Gordon said. “He plays

with intensity and he’s just so competitive...that’s something that’s been instilled in him for a very long time.” Snead can block, too. He showed as much when he blocked four shots in Goochland’s Ballin’ 4 a Cure game – a 65-39 win over Nottoway – and denied Cumberland’s last-ditch attempt to score after he was the one who made the final two free throws to propel Goochland past the Dukes, 63-62, in overtime on Jan. 17. “It really comes from you, your heart – deep down inside,” Snead said. “I grew up in a tough spot, and I’ve been through a lot, so when I step onto the court, I just give it my all. I just let everything out.” “He’s a guy that you always want on your team, with his fire, with his grit,” Gordon said. “Nine times out of 10, he was the smallest player on the floor, but played with the biggest heart.” With basketball, Snead loves playing with a smaller group. And he’s had varsity teammates that he’s been playing with since his rec league days. “Playing with your boys, it’s
a great feeling,” he said. Snead will play for Goochland baseball again this spring, having made the team after contributing to last year’s group primarily as a pinch runner. Collegiately, he’ll look to continue to play football, with potential schools including Averett, Ferrum and Shenandoah. Snead said that he could play both basketball and football at Shenandoah. His 1,000th point did come in a game that ultimately saw the Bulldogs fall short of their goals. Manassas Park edged past them 63-61 in the quarterfinals, thus ending their season and drawing Snead’s outstanding high school career to a close. He was part of a large senior class that contributed to the boys basketball team’s 18-6 year in 2019-20 in a variety of ways. That class included players Walker Murray, NyJavion Timberlake, Jackson Raines, Kyin Carter, Kindrick Braxton and Khalil Holman and manager Benjamin Cox. “You can’t control everything, you can only control what you can and what’s right there in front of you, and I know one of the things that he did control was his effort,” Gordon said of Snead. “That’s one of the things we as a coaching staff, we try to preach every day, is you’ve got to put forth the effort every day. “He did that.” Snead contributed 10 points in the loss to Manassas Park while J.B. Bell scored 18 and added seven rebounds, Jack Hoffler netted 14 points and Kameron Holman chipped in 13. The biggest part that Goochland’s players, both returning and incoming, need to take away from what Snead

Season ends, but Bulldogs never lost in district Staff Report
GOOCHLAND Goochland’s girls basketball team hosted George Mason in last Tuesday’s Class 3, Region B quarterfinals at Goochland High School. While the hosting Bulldogs stayed competitive through the first half, George Mason would go on to win 58-36 and advance to the next round of regional competition. The loss brought the Bulldogs’ 2019-20 season to a close at 18-7. Goochland, however, did go unbeaten in the James River District and Kate Gibson/Goochland Gazette won the 2020 district cham- Left: Goochland sophomore Emmy Paulin (23) maneuvers down the court during the Bulldogs’ Region 3B quarterfinals game at Goochland High School pionship, 53-30 over Amelia. versus George Mason last Tuesday; right: senior Carleigh Gilstrap (at left) moves past a George Mason defender. Cadets reach state quarterfinals Staff Report

Benedictine’s Jaden Daughtry, seen taking a shot in the Cadets’ final home game in Memorial Gym on Saturday, Feb. 22, scored the game-winning shot in last Tuesday’s state game.
Benedictine boys basketball powered its way into the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I quarterfinals with a thrilling 63-61 stunner of a triumph over rival and host St. Christopher’s in a first-round state tournament game that went down to the final buzzer. Sophomore Jaden Daughtry slashed from inside the key and to his right, disrupted the dribble by the Saints’ Keishawn Pulley, drove the steal down the right side, flew up against the pressure brought by 6-foot-7 senior captain Gill Williamson and laid in the gamewinner before the regulation clock hit zero. The victory marked a massive turnaround for the Cadets from when they took a 73-50 home-game setback to the Saints on Jan. 3. Benedictine ended the 2019-20 year in the quarterfinals with Wednesday’s 91-55 road loss to St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes, but turned in its first winning season (18-16) in 5 years. Daughtry should be among the returners for the Cadets, whose home games in 202021 will shift to the new gymnasium at Benedictine’s campus in Goochland.

Snead continued from >9 has been able to contribute to the basketball program is his passion, Gordon said. For Snead, being a part of Goochland boys basketball was a great experience. “It was a special group of people,” he said. “I wouldn’t want to be with another group. It just
taught me a lot of lessons that I can take outside of the sports – just for life.” The senior is grateful for the Goochland community and for everyone who supported him throughout his journey. After he netted his 1,000th point, Snead took the ball over to the home stands, and he tossed it up to his mom, Regina Cooley.
“He doesn’t want to let his mom down. He doesn’t want to let his family members down and I think that’s another motivational point for him, and it says a lot about his family,” Gordon said. “Just the look on her face, it made me smile, too,” Snead said of his mom. “I made her proud, and just seeing her reaction lifted me up.”

Age continued from >6 wear and tear emitted by the enormous responsibilities, and it seems his age has better prepared this president for the rigors of office — or maybe he handles it better than his younger counterparts. Even with that expertise, some say the job has turned this president a whiter shade of orange, evidence the job takes a toll on everyone who occupies the office. It doesn’t take a detailed or accurate memory to recount
how the question of age has seemed very important to American voters in recent years. Ronald Reagan was constantly berated regarding his fitness for office, and many lamented his deteriorating abilities during his second term in office, but others referred to a forgotten names and dates as wisdom. Ronald Reagan was 69 years old when he was elected president, the oldest elected head of state in American history. Bernie Sanders is 78 years old, and Joe Biden is a year behind. And Donald Trump is like the

guy driving the bus at the nursing home at a spry 73 years, the youngster of the trio. I must admit I enter this year’s electoral season with a lackluster attitude, and, for the first time in many years, I don’t have a clear choice in mind. I’ll leave it to politically-savvy minds to decipher just why the contest seems to lessen in intensity rather that heat up. Maybe, it’s because the candidates are in bed by 8 p.m. I also think it’s commendable that Americans see the aging process with a better sense of understanding than just because you can’t find you
keys doesn’t mean you can’t drive a car. But, honestly, I’m yearning for that candidate with youth and vigor, the excitement of energy and vitality of a younger man or woman who, in mind, would be better suited to the demands of perhaps the hardest job on earth. Don’t get me wrong. There are plenty of jobs for which a 70-year-old or older would be the perfect candidate, and I’m the first one to appreciate the wisdom and experience that only years can provide. I’m just not sure running the country is one of them.
