At last, new animal shelter could have open date in sight By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Goochland County animal lovers received some welcome news on April 7, as Deputy County Administrator for Operations Derek Stamey updated supervisors on the projected opening date for the county’s long-awaited new animal shelter. According to Stamey, the 13,941 square foot stateof-the-art Goochland County Animal Protection and Adoption Center, which is being constructed on the same Hidden Rock Lane site as the previous facility, could see the county’s Animal Protection Division move in as soon as next month. Stamey said a grand opening will likely be held in June. Stamey told board members that he was having a hard time containing his excitement over the progress made on Photo by Roslyn Ryan

Women, where as of Sunday 19 inmates had tested positive for the virus. While these numbers are counted in Goochland’s total, the people are likely not county residents. Another number to consider, County Administrator John Budesky pointed out during the April 7 Board of Supervisors meeting, is the number of recoveries currently recorded by
health officials. In Goochland, Budesky said, at least five people diagnosed with COVID-19 have recovered. Although that number is not tracked as closely as the number of infections, Budesky said it was a good sign. As of Sunday, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Virginia had risen to 5,077, with 837 hospitalizations and 130 deaths.

Creativity continued from >1 them to stay afloat. Shuttered since a statewide mandate closed all hair salons as part of the effort to curb the spread of COVID-19, Shear Wildness owner Debbie Wilds has been spending her days mostly at home. She’s been missing her clients, of course, and wrestling with the same concerns as many other small business owners across the country and around the world. One night, unable to sleep, she was hit with a flash of inspiration. “Everything that was happening was just bothering me so badly,” Wilds said. “And then all of the sudden it just hit me.” Wilds knew she wanted to be able to communicate the idea to her customers that they are all in this together, and that just because they can’t come to her for their usual beauty treatments they are still always on her mind. If she could somehow take that sentiment and make it into a tangible item, something her clients could keep with them, like a t-shirt, it would help them stay connected.
Wilds knew immediately that she had a winning idea. Now she just needed to find someone to bring it to life. A few miles away, in a shopping center off Broad Street Road, Goochland Tees owners Darlene and Jeff Bobbio were also looking for inspiration. While many people instantly grasp the impact of community lockdowns on salons, restaurants and movie theaters, businesses owners like the Bobbios have also taken a tremendous hit. Because sports leagues have been forced off the field, family reunions postponed and youth camps cancelled, hundreds of orders that Goochland Tees would have been filling have gone up in smoke. Not even during the economic crisis of 2008, Darlene said, was the impact so damaging. The Bobbios are optimists, and like most small business owners they know how to weather the inevitable ups and downs. Still, after 23 years in business, the couple has found this most recent setback difficult to handle. Like any small business owners, they have employees to think about in addition to rent, utilities and supply costs. It was a few weeks ago, with all of this weighing heavily on
the project, which has hit a number of stumbling blocks since the county first broke ground on August 1, 2017. Originally slated to open in late 2018, the shelter’s construction was stymied from the outset by weather-related delays. Then, last June, the county announced that it had terminated its relationship with BFE Construction, the general contractor on the project, and begun working with the company that issued a performance bond for the work in order to get back on track. Budesky said the move came after it was determined that the contractor was not meeting the terms agreed upon with the county, and that by that point construction had fallen around six months behind schedule.

Stamey said that he now expects full completion of the facility within 60 days. First conceived and shepherded through its initial phases by the late Rebecca Dickson, who was then serving as Goochland County Administrator, the new Goochland County Animal Protection and Adoption Center will include an adoption area and an education center as well as a spacious new shelter area to replace to outdated, cramped site that had previously been in use. Funding for the new shelter came in part from the county, and in part from the nonprofit Goochland Pet Lovers organization. The temporary Animal Shelter is still operating at the rear of the Central High School Complex until the new shelter is completed. Citizens can continue to contact the Animal Shelter by calling (804) 556-5302.
Calling
her mind, that Darlene got a call from Debbie Wilds. Wilds had an idea, she told her, but she needed some help to make it happen. After going back and forth a few times on the design — tweaking the art here, adding a bit of pizzazz there — both women agreed they had a winning shirt. Next to an image of a woman’s face, each shirt features the words “Coronavirus 2020, Stay Rooted and Sparkle On!” So far the shirts have been a hit with Wilds’ clients, and the Bobbios have even heard from other salons looking to use the same design. Last Thursday saw Jeff at the printing machine, turning out a fresh batch of bright pink shirts. Each one he finished was sent through a conveyorstyle dryer, which brought out
the shimmer in the lettering. As Jeff worked, Darlene and her team were discussing fabric face masks, which they recently realized they could easily use their existing equipment to produce. It’s just one more way they are trying to adapt to a challenge they never could have imagined but will do their best to meet. For her part, in a show of solidarity, Wilds said she is refraining from coloring her own hair or doing her nails until the shutdown ends, and is hoping the shirts will help let people know that they are no less fabulous if they have to go a little while longer without having their roots touched up. “We’re going to wear our shirts and be proud,” Wilds said, “until we can all get back together again.”
Acts 2:21 ‘AND IT SHALL BE THAT EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.’ When Peter spoke these words from the Old Testament prophet Joel, what did he mean - just speak the right words? His sermon closed with: “…be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins…” It means far more than simply saying a phrase. Consider the fact that Saul of Tarsus was told: “…Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.’” (Acts 22:16) Notice that he was “calling on His name” in the act of being immersed. Have you called on His name as the Bible says?

Kates Day at VCCW cancelled, foundation meeting postponed Contributed report
The 78th Annual Kates Day scheduled for May 6, 2020, at the Virginia Correctional Center for Women (VCCW) in Goochland is cancelled due to Commonwealth of Virginia mandate related to the coronavirus (COVID-19). The annual meeting of The Elizabeth Kates Foundation will be rescheduled. Many in the community know Kates Day for its plant sale, bake sale, and crafts sale of goods made by offenders at VCCW. Many VCCW offenders have been working for months
to prepare for this year’s Kates Day by raising beautiful plants, designing unique crafts and planning for the bake sale and dinner. The sales of plants, crafts, baked goods and dinner tickets enable the Kates Foundation, an all volunteer nonprofit 501(c)(3) charity, to help support the Horticulture Program, to provide college scholarships for onsite and correspondence classes, and support other educational programs at VCCW. The Horticulture Program is an educational opportunity for offenders to obtain certifi-
cates in landscape and nursery care. This program and other programs supported by the Kates Foundation improve offenders’ chances for a successful re-entry into the community. Work continues on 288, Broad Street intersection Contributed report
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has begun construction on interchange improvements at Route 288 and Broad Street Road (Route 250), a spot that has long been recognized as one of the more dangerous intersections in the county. The purpose of the project is to improve the interchanges for both lanes of Route 288 and Broad Street Road, including added turn lanes and traffic signals. According to information provided by VDOT, the work should help accommodate higher traffic volumes and increase safety. The total cost of the project is approximately $3.7 million. Work is expected to be complete in fall 2020.

Goochland doctor partners with area businesses to make intubation boxes Devices will be used to help keep healthcare workers safe as they battle virus By Laura McFarland Editor
Two area businesses have teamed up with a Richmondbased emergency room doctor to help protect medical personnel across the state working on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis. The speed with which this endeavor has unfolded has been necessarily fast-paced. On Tuesday, March 31, Dr. Scott Hickey, a Goochland resident who works in the emergency room at Chippenham Hospital, reached out to local
contractor Michael Potter to discuss an idea he had seen for making clear boxes that are designed to protect healthcare workers as they intubate patients with the disease. The original design came from Dr. Hsien Yung Lai in Taiwan, who open sourced the design for other doctors to use globally. The box supplies an additional barrier for medical personnel during intubation – a time where they are at extra risk of being hit by saliva, tears, nasal secretions, or vomit from infected patients, Hickey said. “Everything that is in their lungs gets sprayed out,” said Hickey, who is also the Virginia College of Emergency Physicians president. Hickey tried to make a box at home but realized he needed help because the “final product was not something
that was going to be used in healthcare.” When he reached out to Potter, the contractor told him to leave the project in his hands since the doctor had much more important duties to handle. Within several hours, Potter, who is the owner of Village Building Co. Inc, and fellow Powhatan businessman David Dowdy, owner of Interior 2000, had constructed a working prototype. When he saw them, Hickey immediately asked for more. By Wednesday, April 1, the two men and a team of their employees had built 30 additional boxes – the maximum they could make with the ¼-inch plexiglass they had on hand at the time. Potter and Dowdy both say they still have regular work for their employees to do, but told Hickey they would make
it happen. The workers who came in for several hours on Wednesday night – in staggered shifts for safety – did so after already working a full day at their regular jobs, Dowdy said. He sent out a group text telling them what was happening and “everyone was all in.” “They worked all day at our jobs and then stayed until 10 p.m. building these boxes. It was a total team effort. Everyone had a great attitude and they feel great about it,” he said, adding they are eager to continue helping. Dowdy said it also feels personally rewarding for him to participate in the project. “I was looking at it more in the sense of regular construction when we built that first box. Then when you see and talk to the doctor, then you see Intubation boxes > page 12

Dear Editor, Mr Bachman’s latest letter criticizing our Governor’s COVID-19 response as being overreaching, naive and out of touch requires a response. As a civil libertarian I feel strongly about big government’s excesses. At the same time, I also feel that in many respects that this infectious and highly contagious virus, in the absence of a vaccine, required quick and effective measures. Initially I was surprised at Gov. Northam’s June deadline. But it appears that the Trump Administration is inching towards that date and potentially beyond, based on Dr. Fauci’s response about when we might return to normalcy. Mr. Trump has repeatedly indicated that the data will drive his decisions. As for the land of the free and people acting responsibly, the social distancing appears to be working. Suggestions to the contrary are more than wrong headed they are dangerous if not immoral. We have clearly demonstrated that even with a flu vaccine people fail to vaccinate and tens of thousands of our citizens die, hardly an act of responsibility unless you think that is acceptable. In the case of COVID-19, with no vaccine, failure to socially distance is akin to yelling fire in a crowded movie theater and claiming freedom of speech permits such behavior. As if Mr. Bachman’s views were not off base enough, he turns to civil unrest and violence. We will more than recover from this pandemic, it won’t take years or revolution, it will take our history of resolve over many catastrophes, not lowering ourselves to inappropriate behaviors that only will further degrade our democracy. If we don’t like a politicians behavior we have the ballot box not the gun. Richard Carchman Columbia see Letters > page 7

Q & A: Dr. Tracie A. Daniels The Goochland Gazette has been reaching out to local faith leaders to see how they are responding to the COVID-19 outbreak. This week, we spoke with Rev. Dr. Tracie A. Daniels of St. Mark Baptist Church
Is there any one particular piece of scripture or other text that you lean on during very difficult times? Psalm 91 is one of the most comforting passages in the Bible. It is God revealing is comfort, sovereignty and care for mankind. Psalm 91 teaches us that when calamity, death and sorrow surrounds us, God will protect us. Science should guide our response to COVID-19 Dear Editor Maybe the Goochland Gazette Letters to the Editor is a bit more than a platform for Art Bachman rants. In that case, here are a few points to consider no matter one’s political denomination. I can only refer to scriptures. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” We also read in verse 6 of the same chapter, But without faith, it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. This indicates to us that we must be believers of God to reap the benefits that He provides. One of those benefits is a consequence of our faith (trust) in his ability to do what we cannot see. It is very difficult for us during a time of uncertainty. It is during these times where we must trust Him and his promise to provide and protect us. So far no financial forecast demonstrates to me that the risk of hundreds of thousands of lives outweighs the benefits of a temporarily interrupted business as usual. So, are we at a crossroads: lives or continued business as usual? Or, is our approach to business in the U.S. and globally so tenuous that we can’t consider how to save the most lives we can by applying the best science available?

Truth be told, a little bit of boring would go a long way right about now, if it meant that we could roll back the clock, and the job losses, and the terrible, heartrending loss of life.
Dear Editor, I certainly hope Art Bachman feels better after his two weeks of letter ranting. I kept waiting for the words “April Fools” to appear because he has got to be kidding. Or maybe he’s in some other world because I know very few who agree with his slanted view of current life here. Rebellion by “gun-toting looters”— what civilization does he live in? Remember, he sent his only son into the World to die for us that we may be saved and have everlasting life! Reflect on his goodness and kindness. Reflect on how he has clothed the earth with beauty and fashioned us as humans in his likeness. Reflect on how he has made ways and opened doors that were otherwise not available. And lastly, renew. Let’s renew our minds and our relationship with Him. He is good. He is gracious. He desires us to have a deeper relationship with Him. I am thankful that so many governors of both political parties have stepped forward to keep the number of sick and deaths lower than might occur. While, on the other hand, the President and his cronies spent time denying a crisis when they should have been planning for it. Goochland robotics goes above and beyond By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
The Goochland High School robotics team, which featured several seniors this year, was confident in its ability to reach the 2020 For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) world championships in Detroit after competing in regionals in 2019. Ultimately, the Junkyard Dogs would only get to showcase the robot they created for this year, as well as the growth they’ve made since Stephanie DeLoach first took the helm of the program, in one competition: the Chesapeake District Richmond VA Event sponsored by Dominion Energy, held during the first weekend of March. The COVID-19 pandemic led to the closure of all Virginia schools and the subsequent cancellation of all Virginia High School League activities for the rest of the school year, as well as the cancellation of this year’s world championships. But in their one competition, the Junkyard Dogs’ accomplishments went beyond their own performance. They didn’t just rank first in the event with a 16-4 record – they also helped Danville-based TeamTalon build its own robot at the competition. When they walked in during the day of load-in for their pits, DeLoach said they saw John Julock, who has been Goochland’s mentor for 11 years and a mentor for FIRST for 16, rushing about as he worked to help another team get things together. “One of the other team coaches . . . that knew me very well, he said, ‘There’s a team over there that really needs a lot of help if you have time to help them,’” Julock recalled. “I said, ‘Where at?’ And he showed me where they were and I went over there and I looked.” All there was to the robot at the time was a frame with a motor mounted in, and the wheels weren’t even connected. TeamTalon was moving high schools, and in the transition, it had

lost a lot of its robotics equipment. The team was working to complete its robot in time in order to get it inspected and have it participate. So Julock and Goochland’s team members worked to put the drivetrain together and had it wired up in less than two hours.
“John, when he walked away from there, he was sweating, because he was like, ‘That’s the fastest I’ve ever wired a robot, before,’” DeLoach said. “He did a phenomenal job.” Volunteers from FIRST pitched in on the programming side, and the Junkyard Dogs’ team captain,
senior James DeLoach, brought their computer home, updated their software and programmed it so that TeamTalon’s robot would move. “James ... he’s one of the best robotics programmers I’ve seen at the competitions,” Julock said. “He’s very, very good. He’s very, very knowledgeable.” TeamTalon was inspected before the competition started and given the go-ahead. The team’s robot completed all 12 qualifier matches and was part of three alliance victories. The tasks of this year’s game, Infinite Recharge, included taking in and shooting gator balls that were seven inches in diameter into target holes, known as power ports, at the uppermost and bottom points of an eight-foot-tall structure. Other elements to the game included spinning a color wheel and then getting the robots to hang from and balance out both ends of an overhead, seesaw-like lever. The game also pitted one alliance against another. Each alliance consisted of three teams – with one
robot per team – and the teammates changed from match to match during the qualification rounds. The Junkyard Dogs got to team up with a wide range of different allies, who hailed from locations like Charlottesville, Mecklenburg and the Eastern Shore, before taking on the playoffs alongside teams from Fairfax and Franklin. The Junkyard Dogs and their allies won two of three quarterfinal matches, then swept the semifinals with two wins to reach the finals. But they lost two of three to finish runner-up among the alliances. But individually, it was Goochland’s first time ever ranking first in a competition. At the Richmond Event, the Junkyard Dogs claimed the top spot ahead of the runner-up, Deep Run High School’s Blue Cheese, and took home a Finalist Award plus the Gracious Professionalism Award. Stephanie DeLoach said Gracious

Scenes from Goochland girls basketball season
File/Goochland Gazette
Clockwise, from left: Carleigh Gilstrap (11) puts the ball up on an attempted shot; Gabby Ragone (5) drives the length of the court; Emmy Paulin (right) passes the ball; Lilly Yutzey (33) receives a teammate’s pass; Taylor Whitfield (13) launches the ball from deep; Victoria Lopez (15) brings down a rebound; Kenley Warren (right) secures the air ball while staying on the move; Jalyn Burns (32) goes for a layup. This year’s Goochland girls varsity basketball team finished the 2019-20 season with a final record of 17-8, went unbeaten in the James River District (16-0) and won the district tournament championship.
Robotics continued from >8 Professionalism is realizing that, even though you’re competing against others, you’re also working with them to learn, understand and accomplish tasks. “We all try to help each other,” Julock said. “I saw a need.” “I’m really proud of them,” Stephanie said of her team. “We had a couple of issues that night with our own robot, but they really were not worried about that. “When I came home – I have two boys on the team – and they both said . . . the most important thing right now is helping them get out on the field, because they’re here, they want to play.’ And it didn’t matter that we had other things we needed to get done. It was like, ‘We need to help them because it’s important.’” “We were able to basically take this
piece of metal that had absolutely no function whatsoever and take all their electronics – I had to update all their firmware, do all that – and then we made it into an actual cohesive system in like no time at all,” James DeLoach said, “and we just got them up and running. It was really cool.” “And the other team was extremely appreciative,” Stephanie said. James also gave them some resources to continue their learning. “It mostly reminded me of our team back in 2016,” James said. “That’s why I was like: I need to help these kids out, because they could be like us in the next four years, increasing their knowledge.” Julock has very much enjoyed working with Goochland’s team. “It’s gratifying because you see kids that, before they start robotics, they’ve never picked up a screwdriver, and at the end of the competition, they helped build a robot,”
said Julock, who added it’s been nice to see how Stephanie has taken the program and “escalated it tremendously” over the past few years. “Now we have two rooms there we can work on to build a robot in. Goochland’s been very good with supporting us, supporting the team,” Julock said. “They give us more facilities, they help us out financially, we get stuff to work on our robot and everything else. It’s been a very progressive, very uplifting experience over there.” He’s gotten to see students in the program make the decision to go into mechanical engineering in college. “And if it wasn’t for robotics, I don’t think they would’ve made that decision,” he said, “because they wouldn’t have been exposed to mechanical engineering.” Stephanie said that this would’ve been the Junkyard Dogs’ best year ever, and that everyone was pretty
disappointed about the season getting cut short. “But I have to say, that when we found out that the season was going to be cancelled, I’m so proud of the kids, because as soon as we found out that it was cancelled, they immediately started talking about – while there was a little bit of, ‘Wow, I wish we could go [to worlds],’ there was also, ‘Okay, what can we do to make it better for next year? How are we going to make sure that this learning continues?’” For James – who plans to study computer science and mechanical engineering as well as maybe electrical and computer engineering – the heartbreak of losing his senior robotics season didn’t really hit him until the day after. “It was tough. My heart was definitely broken,” James said. “But I really want to see this team succeed.” He started writing a message to everyone on the team talking about
their plans for the next few months. In his message he said: “We can’t return to what we were back in 2016. We have to just keep on advancing.” He asked his teammates for any knowledge or input on making a robot or any part of the robotics process – including sponsorship and graphic design – that he could include in a presentation or video, which would be uploaded to Goochland robotics’ website so that everyone would have access to it. Losing the rest of the season has also shown James that he’s not done with robotics yet – he needs to keep going. He’s talked a lot about mentoring high school teams that are near Virginia Tech, where he’s slated to go for college. Stephanie will miss all of her seniors, and she’s hoping they’ll be able to help the team down the road either as mentors or volunteers at future events.

Local farmers working to guard against coronavirus Contributed report
As COVID-19 continues to affect many U.S. industries, Virginia farmers are taking extra precautions to protect the health and safety of their employees. In accordance with health and safety measures being outlined by many U.S. agencies, Virginia farmowners are encouraging their employees to increase handwashing and sanitization practices to avoid falling ill. Additionally, farmworkers are being asked to limit their trips to crowded public places to help avoid inadvertently tracking the virus onto farms. “Farmers are mindful of how quickly COVID-19 could devastate their businesses
and communities, and even one case is too many on the farm,” said Ben Rowe, Virginia Farm Bureau Federation national affairs coordinator. “Fortunately, farmers are uniquely prepared to address the health and safety needs presented by this pandemic. Handwashing, sterilization biosecurity and hygiene training for farmworkers is already standard for U.S. farms to meet our nation’s strict food safety standards.” Rowe explained that because farmers often live and work alongside their employees, they’re already well-versed in implementing health guidelines developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Additionally, farmowners are continuing
to monitor changes made to health and safety policies to best protect their employees and the continued operation of their businesses. They are turning to the CDC and land grant universities to get up-to-date safety information, and using resources on dedicated webpages from VFBF and American Farm Bureau Federation. “Safety remains a top priority across the food chain, and everyone from farmers to farmworkers and agricultural haulers continue to take great care and precautions to get food safely from the farm to your tables,” Rowe said. David Hickman, an Accomack County vegetable and grain producer, asserted that keep-
ing farmworkers healthy during the pandemic is “vitally important” to America’s food supply. He noted that if farmworkers are absent from the fields during growing season, a depleted harvest would complicate matters further. “We could have real food shortages in this country if [farmworkers] can’t plant crops and take care of livestock,” he said. “If we get sick and the planting and caring for crops and livestock doesn’t happen in the spring, we won’t have the supply of meat, vegetables, grain or anything else in fall and winter. It’s important that we are all conscious about our own health as farmowners and our workers’ health to feed the nation,” Hickman added.
Extension Service offers tips Museum of Culture & History seeks stories, artifacts of COVID-19 impact on selecting safe take-out Contributed report
BLACKSBURG -- The reliance on take-out and food delivery are increasing because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and, while the food supply is safe, there are ways to emphasize food safety from these sources. “The FDA has stated that the U.S. food supply remains safe for both people and animals. There is no evidence of human or animal food or food packaging being associated with the transmission of the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19,” said Joell Eifert, director of the Food Innovations Program in the Virginia Tech Department of Food Science and Technology and Extension Specialist in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. However, there are some simple practices you can do to further emphasize food safety. Receiving and delivery practices should minimize human to human contact which can include: z Pre-pay for your order before delivery to avoid sharing pens or payment equipment. z Ask for your delivery to be left at the front door to avoid hand-to-hand contact. z Ensure that you will be available or are notified of your delivery to ensure that perishable items don’t sit out of refrigeration too long. z When bringing your delivery into the house, place the outer box or bag on a hard surface that can be cleaned and sanitized. Remove the food from the outer box or bag and then immediately discard the outer bag or box. z Wash your hands before putting food away.
z Clean and sanitize the surface that outer boxes or bags touched. z Wash your hands before opening, preparing, or eating food. Washing hands before eating is always recommended. The food industry is dedicated to making sure food, food establishments, and food manufacturing facilities remain safe and do not contribute to the current outbreak. The most effective tools against the COVID-19 virus are already being used by these food producers and are basics for food safety, Eifert said. “Practices already in place include handwashing, ensuring that ill workers are sent home, following standard operating procedures for making a safe quality food product, avoiding situations that allow cross-contamination and following sound cleaning and sanitation practices,” Eifert said. “These practices are not new to food establishments and are providing to be sound practices to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 to employees as well as customers.” Eifert said that measures taken by food manufacturers are: z Practicing social distancing in the employee common areas like cafeterias, restrooms, and breakrooms. z Increasing the cleaning and disinfecting of frequently touched surfaces or shared equipment used by employees (using CDCrecommended procedures). z Wearing disposable gloves and gowns for cleaning and disinfecting. z Use EPA-registered disinfectants safely.

RICHMOND — The Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC) is implementing a new collecting initiative to document the impact of COVID-19 on all Virginians throughout the Commonwealth. “As we continue to react and adapt to the widespread COVID-19 health and financial crisis, we feel that our institution is uniquely positioned to lead the important work of documenting the impact of this unprecedented and far-reaching emergency in Virginia,” said VMHC President and CEO Jamie Bosket. “Like other great trials of our past, we know that it is critical that future generations be able to learn from what we are facing today.” As the Commonwealth’s oldest cultural organization and the only institution dedicated to telling the entire story of Virginia, the VMHC is launching an initiative to document the ways our Commonwealth and its communities have been impacted by the pandemic.
The VMHC will be accepting digital submissions throughout the crisis on a special webpage which allows all Virginians to share their stories, upload original images, audio or video recordings, or donate artifacts to the collection. Experiences relating to changes in daily life, work and family needs, and the role of the health care and first responder community will be of particular interest. These submissions will be added to the VMHC’s renowned collection of nearly 9 million items for future research, exhibition, and programmatic use. The VMHC’s extensive holdings already includes personal accounts of Virginians closing schools, building makeshift hospitals, and “staying in” due to yellow fever in 1855, smallpox in 1905, and the Spanish influenza pandemic of 1918. More information about this important initiative and how to contribute content can be found online at VirginiaHistory. org/COVID19Stories. This is the latest new development in VMHC’s commitment to serving Virginians during these try-
ing times. The VMHC recently launched a curated collection of free digital resources and learning materials – one of the most impressive offerings of any likeminded organization in Virginia (VirginiaHistory.org/AtHome). This growing portfolio includes hundreds of hours of video content, hundreds of pages of articles and historical research, brand new virtual tours, as well as tools for student learning and engagement at home. The Virginia Museum of History & Culture is owned and operated by the Virginia Historical Society — a private, non-profit organization established in 1831. The Virginia Museum of History & Culture is located at 428 N. Arthur Ashe Blvd. in Richmond’s Museum District. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Sunday for the galleries and museum shop and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday for the research library.
