Drive-in to host 2020 Goochland graduation By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Goochland resident Matt O’Berry designed and then built this 28-foot pirate ship in his yard for his two sons to enjoy. O’Berry says he did not use any drawings or plans for the project, which was inspired by his sons’ love of the 1985 cult classic film “The Goonies.”

After missing out on spring sports, prom and many other high school milestones, Goochland High School’s Class of 2020 learned May 5 that they will still be able to take part in at least one cherished tradition: graduation. Appearing in a video posted to the school division’s Facebook page, superintendent Dr. Jeremy Raley and Goochland High School principal Dr. Chris Collier announced that this year’s commencement ceremony will be held on Tuesday, June 16 at 8:30 p.m. at the Goochland Drive-In Theater. Standing in front of the theater’s main gate, Raley acknowledged that the past few weeks have been extremely challenging for students and their families, and said the school division is committed to making sure the seniors are recognized for their accomplishments. Collier added that he was looking forward see Graduation > page 2

Covenant
Genesis 9:13, 15 “I set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth…and I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh.” When Noah disembarked from the ark God spoke. The real meaning of the rainbow is not human rights, political or social issues; it is God’s promise concerning earth’s future. God is a covenant-keeper. He fellowships only those who are in His covenant. The most important covenant in these last days is the better covenant IN Christ’s blood (Luke 22:20; Hebrews 8:6). Are you IN the covenant of Christ? (Romans 6:3-4) If you’re interested in further study of God’s word, meet with us Wednesday evenings at 6:30. Details on our website.

Heidel said he first heard
about the concept of hosting graduation ceremonies while speaking with other drive-in owners who were planning to do it, and said he liked the idea immediately. “While this may not be the traditional venue for a graduation ceremony, it will be pretty cool and memorable for our young men and women,” Heidel said. “We’re proud of them and happy to be a part of it.”
gold paint scheme, and a classic skull-and-cross-bones flag flying high above the deck. Then, of course, there is the climbing wall, the swing set, and the three yards of sand inside, all of which add up to perhaps the world’s most perfect play place for a pint-sized pirate O’Berry’s sons, as expected, were “ecstatic” when they saw the finished product, and have already spent hours enjoying their dad’s handiwork. One of the ship’s most exciting features,
however, may be yet to come: On Monday, O’Berry took delivery of the one-quarterscale replica working cannon (it was reportedly designed to fire hot dog buns) he found on eBay and plans to install on the side of the ship. The ship may never sail the high seas, but O’Berry said he was pleased with the final product and glad that his boys are enjoying it. At the very least, he said chuckling, “they’ll have some stories to tell their friends.”

Supervisors readopt rules allowing telemeetings, relaxing of deadlines By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Goochland County Supervisors on May 5 readopted ordinances aimed at maintaining government operations during the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak and delaying penalty and interest on real estate and personal property taxes due June 5, 2020. In light of the national, state, and county declarations of emergency in response to the public health risk from the potential spread of COVID-19, the county adopted an emergency ordinance on March 26, 2020, to provide for the continuity of government actions during this state of emergency, as is specifically permitted under state law. A full version of the Continuity of Government Operations during Pandemic Ordinance is available at https:// www.goochlandva.us/DocumentCenter/ View/6883/Continuity-of-GovernmentOrdinance. It is posted on the “Your Government” tab of the County’s website (www.goochlandva.us), as well as under the Quick Links on the Board of Supervisors page, and on the Emergency Management page. The ordinance allows public meetings to occur with members of the public body and members of the public participating through electronic or telephonic means. Also included among the provisions: The ordinance specifies the authority of the director of emergency management to alter or restrict the use of county buildings and facilities as needed to protect the health of the public and employees. The ordinance acknowledges the

additional powers under state law for the director of emergency management during an emergency with respect to incurring obligations, entering into contracts, and suspending procedures. In addition, the director of emergency management is granted authority to take numerous other actions as needed on a temporary basis and to have those actions thereafter be ratified by the Board of Supervisors. The ordinance encourages county personnel to attempt to meet established deadlines and time frames but allows for the suspension of deadlines and time frames, if necessary. In addition, the Board of Supervisors readopted an ordinance to delay penalty and interest for 30 days on real estate and personal property taxes due June 5, 2020. The ordinance was originally adopted as an emergency ordinance on April 7, 2020 so that it would take effect before tax bills were prepared and sent to residents. Upon adopting it as an emergency ordinance the Board of Supervisors authorized the public hearing on May 5 to consider readoption of the ordinance. It is important to note real estate and personal property taxes are still due on June 5, 2020, but penalty and interest for those not paying by the due date, is being delayed for 30 days. Treasurer Pamela Duncan is aware of the current challenging times and encourages any taxpayer with hardship concerns to contact her office at (804) 556-5806 or treasurer@ goochlandva.us. Under Section 4 (C) of the continuity ordinance, the County Administrator, as director of emergency management, is granted additional powers to take a variety of actions in the interest of the public welfare.

Changes for this year’s Poppy Day In 2017 Congress designated the Friday before Memorial Day as National Poppy Day, recognizing the red poppy as the national symbol of remembrance for our fallen military. This year, May 22, has been designated as that day. Usually the American Legion Auxiliary would be present in the community passing out poppies and collecting donations around Memorial Weekend. This year, however, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the American Legion Family will host a Poppy Day drivethrough event at the American Legion Hall, located at 3386
River Road west in Goochland on Friday May 22, Saturday May 23 and Memorial Day, May 24 from 10 a.m. to noon each day. Poppies will be given out and small children will receive a flag. While donations to the Poppy Fund are gladly accepted, they are not required. One hundred percent of the donations collected are used to support active duty military, veterans and their families. Can’t make this event? The American Legion also accept donations through the organization’s website at https://www. auxiliary215goochlandva.org/.

New distance learning platform intended to help connect students with programs Contributed report
Building on more than 25 years of experience in higher-education distance learning, Virginia’s Community Colleges have announced the launch of CollegeAnywhereVA. org, an online portal enabling Virginians to find online courses that best meet their needs. In addition to connecting students with high-quality and affordable remote-learning courses, the site also connects current and prospective students with advisors, known as College Navigators, streamlining the application and course enrollment process. “Virginia’s students are facing unprecedented circumstances that affect every aspect
of their lives, including higher education,” said Dr. Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges. “There’s no national consensus on when life will return to ‘normal,’ and a recent national study of high school seniors found that one in six students who intended to enroll full-time at a fouryear institution are reconsidering their plans. Our goal with CollegeAnywhereVA is to ensure that those students, and any prospective student in Virginia, know they can find the right course or online program through their community college.” CollegeAnywhereVA provides a transparent view into the 10,000+ online courses

offered throughout Virginia’s 23 community colleges. Depending on student goals, these courses could: Count toward an associate degree or certificate program at the local community college Count toward a degree or certificate program at another institution Include valuable workforce training programs that prepare students for career credentials Virginia’s Community Colleges have guaranteed transfer agreements with dozens of private and public institutions across the commonwealth. Tuition and fees at Virginia’s Community Colleges
are roughly one-third the comparable costs at four-year universities. “Our students, especially our high school seniors, have lost so many experiences over the last couple months – no proms, no yearbook exchange, no graduation ceremonies. We owe it to them to provide them the virtual door to their next educational step,” said Dubois. Prospective students interested in enrolling in an online, remote learning program, are urged to visit CollegeAnywhereVA.org. Together, Virginia’s Community Colleges serve more than 270,000 students each year. For more information, visit www.vccs.edu.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
Frayed nerves and flowers: A lesson in patience By Roslyn Ryan Editor
It was during a trip to the garden store last weekend when I realized that I might not be the person I thought I was. I had spent the previous day lamenting, to pretty much anyone who would listen, the severe shortage of patience and general decorum I’d seen on display in recent weeks. In a 24-hour period, for example, I had seen an elderly gentleman snap at a fellow shopper at my local grocery store for getting (inadvertently, it appeared) too close to him in the canned food aisle, and then witnessed another verbal dust-up in the parking lot. This was followed shortly thereafter by a Facebook thread on a COVID-19-releated topic that descended into a virtual brawl. None of these things, or course, were as stomach-turning as the photo that came out of Michigan last week, featuring an enraged pro-
tester screaming into a stoic young state trooper’s face as that trooper stood at his post at the state capitol building, as if heaping abuse on our first responders is an even remotely appropriate way to air grievances with your state’s government. Hint: it isn’t. But I digress. I had headed out early on Sunday, intent on picking up a few plants and beating the inevitable rush. But I also had grossly underestimated the number of people who would have exactly the same idea, and arrived 10 minutes after the store opened to find the parking lot already twothirds full and not a spare shopping cart in sight. I managed to snag a rickety old trolley, but soon realized that one of its wheels was out of whack. Still, intent on making the trip count for something, I managed to half steer, half shove the thing through the store to the area where most of the outdoor plants were kept. Did I mention that it was already
getting hot? I also hadn’t eaten breakfast, and it was quickly dawning on me that the amount I had budgeted for my small garden project was going to be woefully inadequate. The trolley was jerking and shimmying all over the place. And did I mention that it was hot? All of these are excuses of course, and none of them good ones, but I wish I had something to account for what I almost said to a young woman in a sundress who, for whatever reason, made the decision to stop and have a lengthy debate with her companion about the merits of choosing zinnias over marigolds while standing directly in the middle of the aisle that my decrepit old plant cart and I needed to pass through to get back to the register. There’s a chance maybe she just didn’t see or hear me — and I could have just asked her to move — but after waiting what felt like forever for her to let me by I found myself having some very uncharitable thoughts
about her, the guy with her, and pretty much everyone in the entire store. I wanted very much to tell her my thoughts on what she could do with those marigolds and those zinnias, and to ask her if she had gotten up that morning expressly intending to ruin my entire day. And then, of course, like a ton of landscaping bricks, it hit me: I was pretty much as low on patience as all of the people I had been kvetching about. Right there in the greenhouse, I was forced to reckon with my glass house. I eventually made it to the register and then back to my car, thankful for the fact that I d kept my temper in check but also, perhaps, a little more tuned in to the fact that sometimes all it takes is one too many stressors, particularly these days, to push any of us to the edge. A trunk full of impatiens and a lesson on patience — I can think of far worse ways to spend a Sunday.

Letters to the Editor Wearing of masks should be done as a service to others Dear Editor, I am writing in repose to a letter by Art Bachman in last week’s paper. His comment about “genetic cleansing” illustrates his true prejudiced beliefs, akin to Steven Miller and President Trump – that some people are less valuable than others. The writer must have older relatives and friends that he considers expendable, people to be sacrificed for his greater good. His statements are ugly and unamer ican. What “All those happened people to the right wearing to life, liberty and funny masks the pursuit that he of happiness? A mask is not worn to protect the wearer from Covid 19 virus; It does not protect one from the virus. All those people wearing funny masks that he interprets as being fearful are wearing masks to protect others from themselves in case they have the virus. Nobody knows whether they have the virus. Letters continued from >6 since tests are scare except if you are in the White House where you can be tested daily or more. Wearing a mask is community service. By wearing a mask, others are protected from someone who has the virus. Not wearing a mask is a sign that the person is uncaring, selfish, arrogant; that the health of others is unimportant. Since they believe the virus will not be very harmful to themselves, they are unconcerned that it may be devastating to someone else. So everyone should continue wearing masks especially as we open up. It protects others from you and shows that you care. Judi Anne Sheppard Crozier
Writer’s words were reminiscent of dark chapters in history Dear Editor, I was reluctant to respond to a letter from a person in Gum Springs who wrote about the COVID-19 scare. I just could not let this letter go by without a response. The thing that I find repugnant and scary is this writer’s comment that “even if one million people died it would only be .3 per cent of our population. Probably the appropriate amount of genetic cleansing”. This term brings to mind the Crusaders who were going to destroy the Arab hordes and save Christianity, the KKK who were going to eliminate the blacks and Catholics or Nazi Germany who were going to rid the Earth of gypsys, Catholics and Jews, or the Apartheid government on South Africa. The term”
genetic cleansing” is unacceptable in any humane and thoughtful society. This writer appears to think it is OK that many of the dying were previously sick and elderly. Let us just forget about those folks, apparently, they are not worth worrying about. The writer thinks that this is the biggest hoax in American history. He also details how he is making alcohol wipes to combat this hoax. To whose advantage is this hoax? I only hope that someone in this writer’s family or social circle does not die from this hoax. Misinterpretation of facts leads to error concerning masks Dear Editor: I was pleased to see Art Bachman’s letter to the editor in the May 7, 2020, edition of the Goochland Gazette. Not because I agree with what Mr. Bachman has espoused about coronavirus in his several recent published letters – I emphatically do not – but because I feared that his failure to have written the previous week might have been an indication that that he had contracted the disease. Apparently, and fortunately, he has not. At least, not yet. Let me be direct: I disagree with virtually everything Mr. Bachman has had to say about the coronavirus scourge. But while he is entitled to his own opinions, he is not entitled to his own facts. It is not my present purpose to engage with Mr. Bachman’s more provocative views, such as that “the coronavirus hype is the biggest hoax in American history,” the deaths of a million Americans is more tolerable than the eco-

Unfortunately, Mr. Bachman’s misunderstanding of the primary means by which the coronavirus
“I feared that the writer’s failure to have written the previous week might have been an indication that that he had contracted the disease. Apparently, and fortunately, he has not. At least, not yet. And one supposed “fact” that Mr. Bachman postulates relating to the method by which coronavirus spreads is considered inaccurate by every reputable source I have consulted. That supposed “fact” is Mr. Bachman’s assertion that “[t] he way you get coronavirus is by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your face.” While contact with contaminated surfaces is certainly one way of contracting the disease, it is simply not the only way, or even the principal means, by which the disease is transmitted. As explained in their website by no less an authoritative source than the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the best scientific evidence is that the primary mechanism by which coronavirus spreads is not surface-to-person. Rather it is spread primarily from person-to-person, “through respiratory droplets produced when the infected person coughs, sneezes or talks.” And, no, Mr. Bachman, this is not a mere talking point advo-
is transmitted leads him to an erroneous, and dangerous, conclusion about face masks. While Mr. Bachman boldly asserts that “masks don’t accomplish much of anything,” the CDC flatly disagrees. Their website is emphatic that wearing masks effectively limits the spread of the disease, and unequivocally advises that “everyone should wear a cloth face cover when they go out in public.” Why? Not to protect the wearer, but to protect others to whom the wearer might unknowingly transmit the disease if the wearer is infected. Mr. Bachman, you may well be correct that by wearing a face covering you do not protect yourself from becoming infected. But that is not the point. The point is, that if you are infected, wearing a face mask reduces the risk that you will transmit your infection to others. Likewise, Mr. Bachman, when other folks wear a face mask in public places, that conduct reduces the likelihood that they will unknow-

www.goochlandgazette.com ingly transmit the disease to you. So, Mr. Bachman, I hope by this letter to raise your consciousness about two matters. First, you should be thankful that others in the community choose to wear what you so glibly characterize as “goofy masks.” By doing so, they protect you. So, if you remain healthy, as I hope you do, you may have those who wear masks to thank for your good fortune. And, second, I encourage you to join the ranks of those responsible individuals who choose to wear face coverings in public. By doing so, you would show respect for your fellow citizens by not unnecessarily exposing them to potential danger in the event that you are an unknowing coronavirus carrier who simply has not yet shown symptoms. Mr. Bachman, your failure to abide by the CDC’s guidance to wear masks in public – indeed, your demeaning of the CDC’s expertise – is a selfish act, which, by example, encourages others to be similarly self-centered. You may not be infected, but others who are out and about in our community surely are. The problem, of course, is that in the early stages of the disease, symptoms may not be apparent. And some who are infected never show symptoms. So, no one can know at any moment if they are infected or not. But if no one wears “goofy” masks, the virtually unanimous consensus of the scientific community is that the disease will spread through the population that much more pervasively. And, if everyone wore masks, the deadly transmission of coronavirus would be inhibited. So, Mr. Bachman, which course will you follow? Will you choose to support the greater good at the risk of looking “goofy”? Or would

you prefer that we all eschew face coverings, so that we can all look good, but thereby permit those among us who are infected to more readily infect others? And, of course, this question is not addressed to Mr. Bachman alone. Many in our community who I observe in public decline to wear face coverings. I wear a mask in public to protect them. I ask that they do the same to protect me. Is this really too much to ask or expect? Robert W. Jaspen Manakin Sabot,
Letter writer’s tone seems to reveal both fear and uncertainty Dear Editor, I am not an avid reader of newspapers, rarely read letters to the editor, even more rarely write one, ut now I find I have time to read the Goochland Gazette from cover to cover. It’s a great local paper, given the trend to move away from the printed word. I am impressed, and especially appreciate the opinion pieces by Editor Roslyn Ryan. I’ve noticed in recent editions that Art Bachman’s letters are regularly printed. Amazing. His tone makes me want to discount him as an “old curmudgeon” but wait, I’m older than he is! We are fortunate to live in a county which has a local paper that prints our letters, so instead of ignoring his vitriol, I’m inspired to respond. Upon rereading Mr. Bachman’s April 9 letter, I realize he must feel out of control and frightened, and be rather miserable. Sadly, this is true for a lot of people. When feeling out of control we tend to do one of the following: lash out in anger blaming others, self-medicate, or problem see Mail > page 8

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County
Rotary kicks off cleaning supply drive By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Among the most effective ways to help curtail the spread of the novel coronavirus is to maintain proper sanitation and hygiene. But for many Goochland residents with limited access to resources, being able to purchase the needed supplies presents an additional challenge. Cleaning items such as hand sanitizer, all-purpose cleaner, bleach and laundry detergent are items that cannot be bought with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) otherwise known as food stamps—making those items even harder for people to obtain. Recognizing that cleanliness is key to a healthier community, the Goochland Rotary Club will be holding a community-wide cleaning supplies drive for GoochlandCares Food Pantry
Mail continued from >7 solve. As human beings we have far less control over our lives than we’d like. However, to quote a line from the brilliant novel, “A Gentleman in Moscow, by Amor Towles, “ …adversity presents itself in may forms; and…if a man does not master his circumstances then he is bound to be mastered by them.” The “Tell Me Something Good” article in the same April 9 issue of the Gazette is a great example of creative ways citizens of Goochland are mastering the circumstances thrust upon us by the adversity of the COVID-19 virus. To borrow from Mr. Bachman’s paraphrase of the individual rights protected by our Constitution, these people are exercising personal responsibility for their own conduct in small and large ways. Very inspiring. Thank you! Neither a pandemic nor politicians can stifle the can-do American spirit of ingenuity and action! Unfortunately, the negativity in Mr. Bachman’s letters can
during the month of May. “This unique drive comes at a time when people’s awareness of the COVID-19 crisis includes the need to maintain especially clean home environments,” said Sally Graham, Executive Director of GoochlandCares. “We have been receiving numerous requests from clients for cleaning supplies every day and we are grateful that the Goochland Rotary Club, in addition to their recent donation of $2,000 for food, is now poised to carry out this Cleaning Supplies Drive” The neighborhood drives will take place on Saturday, May 16 and Saturday, May 30. Rotary project leaders Kevin Kelly and Vern Fleming are asking residents to watch out for flyers being distributed that will provide further details about the drive. Supplies being collected include laundry detergent, all-purpose cleaner, bleach, soap,
certainly drag us down, but I realize he is struggling, as are we all, with adversity which comes in many forms, and now includes a pandemic. I tend to agree with Mr. Bachman’s ranting about the media. After years of trying to defend the media, I now refer to it as “dramatic reading of opinions about events,” but that is for another letter. Negativity seems to permeate the 24/7 coverage and we are hooked on watching/listening. Although we have a variety of media options, my suggestion is that we “physically distance” ourselves from the amount of time spent each day watching any news, regardless of the left or right leanings. Negativity is very contagious. Mr. Bachman blames the Governor of Virginia for our lockdown and enumerates all the potential disastrous consequences, but almost all 50 states and territories have now done the same, and Virginia is far less restricted than Michigan! I suppose writing letters helps relieve his stress, and gives him an opportunity to publicize his political views, thanks to freedom
of the press, which includes the media that annoys him! I’d like to suggest that just because he has the freedom to express his views does not mean he has to be so negative, but then there have been times in my life when negativity overwhelmed. Thankfully such is not the case for me now, so I will step up and offer gratitude for things that are positive in the midst of so much that is negative. I agree with Mr. Bachman that there are and will be painful financial consequences as a result of the shutdown that will take time and a lot of American can-do spirit and ingenuity to resolve. However, his views about food availability, i.e., “gun toting looters going from closed store to store ... “ are just wrong, wrong, wrong! The Food Lion is open (which he ridiculed in a previous letter) doing a great job for which none of the local staff has any prior experience. They are on the front line, meeting the demands of overzealous shoppers. They deserve praise, and probably a raise. I appreciate the staff of the Goochland Food

In addition to the neighborhood drives, collection boxes will be placed at the Centerville Food Lion, 30 Broad Street Rd, Manakin-Sabot and the Goochland Courthouse Food Lion at 2704 Fairground Rd in Goochland. These collection points will be open from 9 a.m. -5 p.m. on Saturday, May 16 and 30. Lion! Grocery stores in the Short Pump area to which Mr. Bachman has access are open and doing a great job of implementing sanitization practices in their stores and directives for customers to share vs. horde. I’m impressed with how many businesses at Goochland Court House, including restaurants, are finding ways to stay open. We also have the Center for Rural Culture (CRC) which offers locally produced food to the membership. Check it out. The concept for CRC, nurtured by Sandy and Rossie Fisher of Goochland, is now doing a huge volume of business benefiting hardworking growers and consumers. Thank you to the staff of the CRC, the producers and the volunteers. Additionally, local seasonal outdoor markets are developing ways to continue to operate.cSomething that Mr. Bachman’s does not address is that lack of food is a problem for many people 365 days a year; the virus is only compounding and enlarging an existing problem. We are fortunate to live in a county where Goochland

They are working hard to deliver services while implementing different operating procedures to deal with COVID 19 challenges. Thank you to the tireless staff, volunteers and supporters of Goochland CARES! All of us, including Mr. Bachman, have the opportunity to make a financial donation or join the many volunteers who work there. There will always be people who, for many complex reasons, need help, and no religious or political theory has ever been able to eliminate that aspect of human existence. Now is a time for those of us doing well to set aside our self-righteousness, reevaluate those things for which we have to be thankful, and find positive ways to respond. I have pondered long and hard to respond to Mr. Bachman’s letter to the editor, which may not get printed, and will have little or no impact on him, but which has helped me to find a way to disagree without too much
rancor, to be less judgmental. It’s hard! It takes time and patience! But right now I have time. How we articulate our feelings and opinions is more important than ever, and most of us are not good at it. So, I appreciate Mr. Bachman for reading the Goochland Gazette and exercising his personal freedom to express his views in letters to the editor. He has inspired me to reevaluate the many things for which I have to be thankful, to compose my thoughts, and to find ways to express my gratitude to others for their many contributions. During this unprecedented time of fear, illness, death, financial upheaval, and disruption to our lives, I am thankful to be a resident of Goochland County. I encourage everyone to pause, reevaluate your blessings, then tell “something good” to others! And one more thing, take time to walk or drive or look out the window. Spring in beautiful rural Goochland County is magnificent! Leanora S. Johnson Columbia, Va.

Senior spotlight: A leader on the diamond By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
There’s a pitch Jackson Raines throws that he considers to be unique to him. The Goochland High School senior learned this pitch – called “The Thing” – from his pitching coach. “The weird thing about it is that it kind of changes every given day,” he said. “I don’t really know how it’s going to look until I start warming up and kind of get a feel for it.” He said it’s kind of like a knuckle curve, although it’s not as loopy as a curve ball. Similar to a splitter, his trademark off-speed styled pitch looks like a fastball, but then drops off at the end. Raines used that pitch a lot. “I’ve had a lot of success with it.” After getting called up to Goochland’s varsity unit towards the end of his sophomore year, the starting pitcher and infielder enjoyed a standout junior season. He posted a 7-3 record on the mound with an earned run average of 1.86 and three complete-game shutouts. In 52 and 2/3 innings of work, Raines struck out 64 batters and allowed 11 walks. Across the entire season, he gave up just one home run. “The thing I notice now that I think helps me the most nowadays in high school . . . is just: I’m always level-headed and calm when I’m on the mound. Nothing really rattles me or gets to me, so I think that helps me a lot and helps me succeed,” he said. “The biggest thing for me is trusting my stuff and trusting my teammates, just knowing that . . . they’ll make a play for you when you need it.” At the plate, Raines batted .343 with 16 RBI, nine runs scored, two triples and two doubles. He’s played third base and pitched throughout his baseball career. Since he had a good arm, the coaches would stick him at third base because he can make the big throw to get runners out. In 2019, he earned First Team All-District honors for both positions and was named the James River District Player of the Year. He also

contributed to Goochland’s winning record of 14-7 last spring. “Takeaways [from junior season] were just how important leadership is. Especially that year, we struggled a lot with injuries,” Raines said. “So I got a lot of innings and just a lot of time up there on the mound, and I just tried to give it all I had.”
Raines played JV most of his sophomore year before getting pulled up to varsity in time for the regional semifinals, in which he pitched two scoreless innings with a strikeout and a walk in his team’s 6-1 win over Prince Edward County, and then allowed two hits and one run while striking out two in one inning as the
Bulldogs triumphed 10-7 over the Maggie Walker Governor’s School Green Dragons for the 2018 Region 2A Championship. Among Raines’ most treasured memories of his varsity days was getting to play in the state tournament that year with Goochland, as well as sweeping a team he considers a rival
in Randolph-Henry in 2019. “They’re one of the best teams we play,” Raines said, “and we always have super-close games against them.” Last year, Raines pitched two of his four complete-game wins against the Statesmen. Both were shutouts Goochland won 1-0 on April 9 and 2-0 on May 9. He’s been a fixture on the diamond for nearly a decade, getting his start in the sport around 8 or 9 years old in the Tuckahoe Little League, for which he was zoned at the time. “I just really fell in love with being around all my friends and just playing baseball,” Raines said. “That just kind of set me off on that path.” Raines started travel ball when he was 11 and played for the Hanover Hornets, the Central Virginia Cardinals, the Manakin Militia and the Mid-Atlantic Orioles. When he was 12, he and his All-Star team got to play on ESPN in the Super Regionals, held in Warner Robins, Georgia. They were one game away from reaching the Little League World Series. Around that time, when he was in sixth grade, he tried out for middle school ball. “It’s pretty hard as a sixth grader to make the team, so that was like a big accomplishment for me to make the middle school team,” Raines said. “That was the first time I got into Goochland sports.” Most of Raines’ friends have come from his time playing baseball and golf. “Playing with the guys that I’ve grown up with was such a cool experience,” he said. “You’re definitely a lot tighter and you know everyone and you can kind of speak up more and . . . no one’s really going to question you. Everyone knows you and they know that you’re trying to do things for the best.” His coaches were great, he said. “Coach [Wes] Farkas is awesome. I learned a lot from him, just bringing me up and making me a part of the

He’s an awesome coach, he loves to joke around,” Raines said. “Also, Coach Farkas, he does a lot of team-building activities… last year we would go out and do a ropes course he built – just stuff to bring the team together – and I think that gave us a little bit of an extra edge.”

Not long after he began his baseball career, Raines, when he was around 10 or 11 years old, first started playing golf through the camps he attended at Bogeys Sports Park. He was 13 when his family actually moved onto a golf course. That’s when he really started getting into golf. He began playing for the high school team as a freshman and had a lot of fun with his older teammates. He’s gotten to play alongside many familiar faces, with this year’s consistent top five including his baseball teammates Cole Bashinski, Kyle Goff and Walker Murray, and his younger sister, Bibby Raines. “I’d say at least half of the golf team played baseball as well,” Jackson Raines said. “I think I did a good job of recruiting some of them to play golf.” Since his freshman season, Raines played around the no. 2 and 3 spots before moving into the top position as a senior. “When I was golfing, I wasn’t really thinking about anything else. That was just my free time,” he said. “It wasn’t as competitive for me as baseball, so I kind of can just relax and just have a good time out on the course. . . . It just helped me kind of get away from anything else that was bothering me.” Raines earned the opportunity his sophomore year to play in regionals alongside former teammate and Goochland alum Peyton Butts. “That was a super cool experi-

Moving on From their lone scrimmage with Chancellor, Raines observed that his team looked really good going into the 2020 season. “I was super excited to see what we could do and just play one more season, because I know” – he added with a chuckle – “me and my friends always talk about it all year and just get super excited leading up to it.” Then came the pandemic. The ongoing worldwide crisis involving COVID-19 led to the closure of Virginia schools for the rest of the academic year and the subsequent cancellation of the spring sports seasons. Goochland baseball’s season was over before it could officially begin. “It’s kind of heartbreaking that … it looks like we’re not going to have a season and we can’t really do anything about it,” Raines said. “It kind of stinks that I didn’t get to play one more year with them, but it is what it is. I’ll cherish our time together and our memories.” He recently put down his deposit for the Clemson College of Business. He has to go through prebusiness first, but he’d definitely like to get into marketing. He spoke to the possibility of playing club baseball or golf while he’s there. “There were definitely a lot of goals that I didn’t get to achieve in baseball this year because of the pandemic obviously,” Raines said. “Just kind of trying to transfer that motivation towards something else like college, and just working harder.” From his time on the field, Raines spoke to learning the importance of staying calm and keeping cool, especially during this time as the pandemic continues to affect and alter life across the globe. “Nothing is guaranteed, and sometimes in life, you’re going to get thrown a curve ball,” he said. “You’ve just got to move on.”

A mother’s love continued from >6 “Their mother?” I replied with some surprise. He explained that — in that moment of total despair and surrender — battle-hardened heroes call for the one person that had cared for and healed them so many times in the past. That interview took place more than two decades ago when I worked at The Hopewell News, but the softspoken medic’s words have stuck with me. My mother was forced
into a dual role early in my life. When my father died at a young age, leaving two small children and a stay at home mom behind, she must have felt like the weight of the world had descended on her. She didn’t shrink in the face of such an enormous challenge, and never shied from her mission to raise us the way my father would have wanted. She was more familiar with the needs of my sister, and attending dance recitals or school plays to see her perform seemed much more comfortable than attending a Boy Scout function or Little League game

with me. Even more challenging was fielding questions from a young boy searching for answers in a world that seemed confusing after my father died. Queries most times reserved for man-to-man discussions were routine questions, and the answers most guys got from their fathers, I received from my mother. She also provided that swift kick in the rear end that boys often need, often tempered with the soothing shoulder that only a mother can provide. On her final day on this earth, I hurried to the bak-
ery to get my sister a birthday cake on my way to the hospital. Somehow, every minute seemed important, and the long line of customers moved more slowly than usual. When I arrived at my mother’s bedside, my sister rushed up to me and said, “She’s been asking for you.” I grasped her hand as she tried to speak. “Don’t try to talk, just relax.” Now, I’ve often wondered what those final words might have been, but I have a confident hunch it might have been a final lesson in life, one thing maybe she had forgotten to

instill in all those years of single parenting. With enormous effort, she took her other hand and placed it on top of mine, and looked at me and smiled. Minutes later, she was gone. As I sat in that hospital room beside her bed long after she had left this earth, I looked at the woman who had been both mother and father to me and thought of the sacrifices, the selfless hours, the uncomfortable moments associated with raising a teenage boy and the infinite amount of patience displayed by this amazing mother who taught me how to

be a man. The words of that medic have never left me, and, somehow, it seems totally fitting that the first face in a man’s life also is the last one he seeks when the end comes. It’s also the reason we pay homage to the women who raised us on this important day of recognition. Simply put, it’s called a Mother’s Love. And when those last minutes of life come to us all, we’ll probably be no different from those brave men on the battlefield and call out for our mothers. Chances are, she’ll be there.
