Let’s get cooking As grills heat up, safety is a top priority

With the start of summer just around the corner, many county residents will be firing up their backyard grills for platters of burgers, dogs, ribs and more. But, as Goochland County Fire Marshall Doug Davies warns, carelessness around any kind of grill—from charcoal to gas— can have tragic consequences.

see Fire-Rescue > page 3

Recently, Davies offered several tips to keep grilling from going wrong. 1. It may seem like a no brainer, but never use a grill inside. Also, always make sure to locate grills at least 10 feet away from your home or your porch railing, and keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill at all times. 2. Don’t overload the grill with too much greasy food — doing so can cause dangerous flare-ups. see Grills > page 3

Budgeting during an outbreak a challenge for schools By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Budgets, as a general rule, aren’t typically documents that inspire outpourings of emotion. During the most recent meeting of the Goochland County School Board, however, the newly amended FY21 budget appeared to do exactly that. Explaining to school board members the ways in which the previously presented budget would need to be amended — including a drop of $1,570,539 (4.8 %) from the operating budget adopted by the School Board in February and a $389,121 (1.25%) decline in revenue — the school division’s Chief Finance Officer Debbie White found it difficult to hide her dismay at the havoc COVID-19 has wreaked on the entire process. “This is a really hard budget season. budget that we presented to you in February, and it was a budget that had been wellvetted,” said White. “We were very excited about that.” Now, she said, all of that has had to be redone. In light of that fact that so much remains unknown, White has been forced to create a new budget based on the best information available. Not only does her office no know what the sales tax funding will look like, they are not sure what the division’s own transportation needs will look like. How many students, for example, will they will be able to transport on one bus? Of course, this year’s budget process is far from the only thing that has changed

for the school administration. School board members maintained plenty of distance between one another during the meeting, which was closed to the community but streamed live on the Internet. Those changes are minor in comparison to the much larger issues school leaders are grappling with, including how to safely transition students back into the classroom and when that could process could possibly begin. Fortunately, White said, the division has not had to furlough or terminate any employees, and will be able to continue meeting the needs of all students despite the loss in revenue. There is also some comfort, White said, to be found in knowing how many others are facing the same issues. “We are not alone,” White acknowledged, pointing out

that her fellow budget crafters in other districts have also been forced to present their own school boards with the sad facts about COVID-19’s impact on their divisions’ bottom lines. “This is just hard on all of us right now.” In addition to offering the amended budget, White also presented board members with a few possibilities for further savings should schools not fully reopen in the fall. The loss of traditional highlights like marching band, school sports and field trips, for example, would save hundreds of thousands of dollars. But while the savings would help, White said, it would do little to ease the pain of losing so much. Said White, “it’s just hard to think about school in that situation.”

Easy to grow, easy to love: In the garden, zinnias always welcomed By Virginia McCown Contributing writer

As the season warms, the pansy fades. What to do? Welcome the zinnia to your garden party! The colorful and hardy zinnia is no shrinking violet. It’s the belle of the ball. A summer flower garden requires plants with three basic elements: ease of propagation, heat and drought tolerance, and dazzling color. The zinnia fits the bill. Zinnias love heat. Planting when the nighttime temperatures are still below 60 degrees does not please the zinnia. It’s best to postpone sowing seeds until the soil has consistently warmed. In Central Virginia, zinnia seeds can be planted in late May, late June, and even late July. The zinnia is one of the easiest and most satisfying flowers to grow. It’s considered an annual, meaning that it goes from seed to flower to seed quickly or in one growing season. Annuals grow from seed or reseed themselves every year. Unlike perennials, the zinnia doesn’t need several seasons to establish itself. The seedlings can pop up within days and zinnia flowers bloom quickly and keep blooming until frost. Beware, however, zinnias require well-drained soil and lots of sun. Don’t select boggy or shady sites.

Brilliant colors, varieties Except for blue, zinnias come in nearly every bright and pastel hue. Cultivar names include, Candy Cane, Persian Carpet and Pop Art. There are varieties called daisies, dahlias spiders and quillleaf cactus. The flowers can be “singles,” with petals lined up in a row around an open center, semi-doubles, or doubles. Zinnia elegans, reaching the height of 12 to 14 inches, remains the classic selection for rear borders. Shorter versions called Thumbelina grow a mere six to eight inches tall. There is even a creeping variety, a Mexican native, called Zinnia angustifolia which does well as a ground cover or in containers.

Powdery Mildew: Arch enemy of zinnias

zinnias top out between eight and 12 inches. Zahara is one of the first varieties to be truly disease resistant. Like Zaharas, the Profusion Series (hybrids between Z. elegans and Z. angustifolia) are resistant to mildew. Most of the time, zinnias are low maintenance. They don’t require much in the way of fertilizing, and they don’t need mulching. Since they’re fast-growing, they shade out weeds. Although not a native plant, zinnias attract butterflies, pollinators and hummingbirds.

Zinnias as cut flowers Their long strong stems make them the perfect selection for bouquets and floral arrangements. Tall varieties best for cutting include State Fair and Benary’s Giant. Cut the stem at an angle just above a bud joint. Remove most of the leaves before placing them in water. Deadheading will encourage more flowers on your zinnias. Deadheading is the practice of cutting off flowers after they’ve reached their peak. Regular deadheading stimulates the zinnia to produce more flowers rather than seeds.

Zinnias are native to Mexico and southern North America. So they prefer hot and dry weather. A word of caution: a wet summer can prove difficult for the zinnia. Too much moisture causes powdery mildew and leaf spot. All zinnias are susceptible to mildew. If and when mildew occurs, try to strip Virginia McCown is a master gardener foliage and destroy it to eliminate spores living in Central Virginia along with her that can further spread mildew. Consider planting mildew resistant garden and assorted creatures both great varieties. Introduced in 2009, Zahara and small.

Fire-Rescue continued from >1 ing viewers to call for help immediately if they experience shortness of breath, chest pain, breathing issues, weakness, paralysis or trauma. Tackling a slightly different but still critical topic, Fire Marshall Doug Davies shared a number of important safety measures related to the proper disposal of cigarettes. “We’ve already seen several fires related to improper disposal this year, Davies said, reminding residents to make sure they dispose of cigarette butts only in appropriate containers. That means avoiding plastic flower pots, which can catch on fire and endanger homes. Mulch beds can also be very dangerous places to toss cigarette butts, Davies said, as the

mulch can ignite and spread fire to nearby structures. Davies also shared the following helpful tips related to cigarette safety: Use a metal can filled two-thirds of the way with sand to dispose of butts. It should also have a tight-fitting lid with several holes drilled into it. Free tutorials on how to create a similar disposal device are available on the Internet. Do not smoke in bed, and use caution while smoking if you are sleepy. Make sure all cigarette butts are cold before emptying ashtrays and cans. Do not smoke in areas where portable oxygen is in use. Finally, do not toss cigarettes out of car windows. Not only is this considered littering — and is punishable under the law — but it can also lead to dangerous brush fires.

Safety continued from >1 3. Do not store extra fuel tanks near the grill. 4. Check your grill for leaks by rubbing a mix of soapy water along the hose lines. If you see bubbles, you have a leak and the hose should be replaced. 5. Use only charcoal grill starter on your charcoal grill, and always make sure coals are completely cool before disposing of them. 6. Never, ever, leave a grill unattended.

County joins effort to help businesses reopen safely Contributed report

In an effort to help support the area business community during these challenging times, Goochland County is partnering with other Richmond region business, community, and governmental leaders to form ForwardRVA, a coalition focused on creating an innovative reopening and planning framework. The immediate focus is to support businesses in reopening and operating safely. In the days and weeks ahead, ForwardRVA will share tools and resources, which will include the perspectives of RVA’s restaurateurs, retailers, and small business owners. To assist businesses in a responsible reopening, ForwardRVA will provide free Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) starter toolkits for RVA’s small, local, retail, and restaurant businesses with 25 or fewer employees that have remained open or are planning a future reopening. The toolkits include face

masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, “We’re Open” signage, and important safety information. The toolkits will be available for pickup at several locations throughout the region on Wednesday, May 27th and Thursday, May 28th , 8:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Small business owners must register in advance for the toolkits and select their pickup location at forwardrva.com. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

In tough times, many deserve to be honored By Roslyn Ryan Editor

As our community continues to inch toward the day when daily life returns to normal, we here at the Goochland Gazette thought it might be a good time to show some appreciation for some of the people who have shined brightest through these recent dark times. Among the awards we would like to present: The “I Certainly Wasn’t Expecting This, But I’m Going To Roll Up My Sleeves And Get It Done As Best I Can” award goes to

all of the parents in Goochland who suddenly found themselves recast in the role of home school teachers, short-order cooks and multitasking miracle workers thanks to COVID19. The “Essential Excellence” award goes to all of the people who do not have the option of staying home and out of harm’s way — from the pharmacists to the grocery store workers to the roadwork crews — who make sure that the wheels keep turning and the disruptions to everyone else’s daily lives are easier to bear. The “Courage In the Face of

Adversity” award goes to all of the men and women in the health and public safety fields — from our doctors and nurses to our first responders — who have been working heroically every day, often putting their own personal safety at risk, to treat the sick, heal the wounded, and protect the community during a time of tremendous fear and anxiety. And finally, last but certainly not least, we would like to present our “Unsung Hero” award to every single man, woman and child who has made any kind of sacrifice, large or small, in order to help someone else make it through this

difficult time. Maybe you held your tongue in the grocery store when another shopper was rude. Maybe you brought an elderly neighbor groceries or donated your stimulus check. Maybe you wore a mask even though it was uncomfortable, or bought something you didn’t actually need so that you could support a local small business. Whatever you did, please know that it mattered, and that you made a difference, and that your community owes you a debt of gratitude. We may not be able to present you with a shiny gold statuette just yet, but rest assured you’ve earned one.

For son, father’s ‘old boots’ a treasured memento By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

When my father returned home from World War II, he left most of the reminders of Army life behind. He had other things on his mind, namely a newlywed wife and a strong desire to get on with his life. Besides a couple of trunks that sat in our attic never opened for years and a pair of old worn combat boots, that portion of his life seemed buried. As children, we would gather

the few items he did retrieve and play army in our backyard. Two older shelter halves and some rickety poles served as our headquarters, and we huddled in what we called our bivouac and made plans to defeat the Germans. I had my father’s old canteen, a few badges and medals whose meanings I hadn’t a clue and an old hat from his days as a lieutenant in the quartermaster corps. It seemed my friends had much more WWII paraphernalia, and some wore old uniforms, wore battle worn knapsacks and

bragged that their father still had a knife from the war. How lucky could a kid get, I thought to myself. I never paid much attention to the old boots, but, they somehow seemed like his most valued memento from his war days. Despite my mother’s insistence that we throw the old eyesores out, he managed to hang on to those boots. We only saw him wear the boots when it snowed, and while the rest of us struggled with nonforgiving rubber boots, he slipped on what must have been familiar

feeling boots. He would tuck in his tailored pants in to the worn boots, and as he stood outside, you could sense the boots transformed him to his days in the Army. We thought the boots looked funny with his pleated pant legs tucked neatly around the tops, but we showed him and the boots the respect they deserved. As the years passed, the boots were relegated to a corner in our furnace room. Each year, they see Boots > page 12

Letters to the Editor Goochland County’s voters urged to take part in primary by mail Dear Editor, For the past two decades we have noted Goochland’s first-in-theCommonwealth voter turnout and asked voters to thank the Officers of Election who have worked so tirelessly to ensure their access to the ballot box. The potential for transmission of the COVID 19 virus creates a hazard for our Officers of Election despite every effort that we will make to ensure their safety, including masks, sanitizers, physical barriers and social distancing. The most effective step we can take is to encourage all voters to cast their ballot by mail. You do not have to come to the polling place to vote in person. If you plan to participate in the Republican Party Primary on June 23 we encourage you to cast your ballot by mail from the safety of your own home. All voters are now permitted to cast an Absentee Ballot using the reason code (2a) “My disability or illness.” You may request an Absentee Ballot be sent to you by mail, mark it, and return it to the Registrar’s Office before election day. Applications are available at the Registrar’s Office or may be downloaded from the state website https://www.elections. virginia.gov/casting-a-ballot/absentee-voting/. You may even request an Absentee Ballot application by telephone: 804-556-5308. After the election, you can verify on the state website that your ballot was cast. In-person Absentee voting began on May 8 at the Registrar’s Office, 1800 Sandy Hook Road, and will continue until 5 pm, Saturday, June 20. The office door, facing Rt. 522, will be open even though the Administration Building is closed to the public. Voting precincts will be open see Letters > page 7

amusement, I felt I had to reply when it comes to his misunderstanding of face masks and his other comments. He is correct when he says that most masks will not prevent the inhalation of a virus. Unless the mask is an N95 or greater specification, then the virus can get through. The problem is with his next statement; that only those infected need to wear a mask. The issue is that the CDC estimates that a full third of

those infected are asymptomatic. In other words, they do not know they are infected and can be a spreader of the virus. So, by everyone wearing masks, we protect each other even if we are one of the asymptomatic carriers. Finally, his last comment regarding the touching of a contaminated surface is the prime way to catch the virus is just plain incorrect. It is a possible (albeit low-risk) way, but not

www.goochlandgazette.com the prime way. All studies point to the fact that the prime way is through inhalation. The CDC and other studies have been saying for a couple of months that the coronavirus spreads mainly through droplets when an infected person sneezes, coughs or talks at close range — even if that person is asymptomatic. In fact, the CDC just recently published a report emphasizing that the virus does not easily spread from contaminated surfaces.

Protection your loved ones deserve ...

Mr. Bachman’s comment that the mask hysteria is a farce is not only incorrect, but dangerous. Let’s follow the recommendation of our health scientists, and not random and unsubstantiated opinions. Do I enjoy wearing a mask — no. Do I wear one when I go out in public — yes. It’s my way of showing respect to my fellow citizens. Tony Flora Manakin-Sabot

For Claire Anderson, soccer a lifelong passion By Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor

When Claire Anderson was beginning her varsity soccer career as a freshman with the Goochland Bulldogs, she recalled being really intimidated at first. “Everybody was so much older than I was,” she said. But the girls on the team were so welcoming. “They were just so nice to me, they were really like a family to me,” she said. “I met my best friends on that team, and we’re still best friends, and we do everything together.” Being part of Goochland soccer was an amazing experience for Anderson, whose playing career goes all the way back to when she was 4 years old. Her parents got her started by signing her up for the Goochland United Soccer Association, and then she played for so long that it felt weird to quit or switch to other sports. “It was just normal for me to have soccer every week,” she said. Anderson grew up playing on many local Goochland teams, competing in GUSA until she was about 12 years old. She switched to the Richmond Strikers right before she started high school, and she played on several different teams since making the switch, usually competing on multiple teams at a time or guestplaying when she could. She’s been with the Striker Redbacks for six seasons, really connecting with her teammates, her coach Bill Harding and the assistant coaches. Anderson has also played indoor soccer and sand soccer. She tried a few other sports, but she always came back to soccer. “When I first started playing, soccer was just something I did. It was normal to me,” she said. “But as I kept doing it and put in the effort and got better, I started to really enjoy it.” Soccer wasn’t just a sport anymore. It was a lifestyle. “The more time I spent with my teammates and coaches and the memories we made . . . driving to the games

and tournaments and just eating out . . . the rush I felt bringing the ball up the field or going one-on-one with an opposing team member – all of that is what made me fall in love with the game of soccer.” During games, Anderson was always thinking ahead. She helped direct players so that they could be in the best position possible to make the right plays and get the ball up the field. Her versatility as a player, and her position as a defender, gave her an advantage, as she had a full view of everyone on the field and could make smart decisions for the sake of the team. “I knew where I needed the ball to go,” Anderson said, “and what players were around me that I had to get around.” Coaches also called on her and talked through their plans for that practice or that game with her. “They told me what they wanted from the team,” she said, “and they knew I could push the team to do their best.” And working with her coaches, she said, helped her excel as a defender. “They really pushed me to keep practicing and be as aggressive as I could and play the ball and make smart decisions. Anderson played and started at

defender in all four years of her varsity career. She was part of a Goochland girls soccer team that assembled a final record of 12-6 and reached the regional semifinals in 2019. The season before, she recalled how they overcame a rough start to 2018 and came back to beat their two biggest rivals in Bluestone (3-0) and Prince Edward (4-0). “It just felt really good when we finally beat them.” She and her teammates got to hang out all the time during the season. Before their home games, they would always go and get smoothies together, and they would sing and dance together on their way back to the field. “Anytime I was with my teammates and we were laughing and joking around – during practice or warmups – it was a good time,” she said, adding: “I could have the worst day at school, but I could go to practice and immediately my day would be turned around. . . . They just knew how to make my day better.” To Anderson, Andrew Hover and Jason Funkhouser were not just really good coaches – they also became really good friends of hers. “They became people that I could go to outside of soccer, to just talk to and help me in any situation,” she

said. “Paul Manno was a great teacher and really saw the potential in me. He pushed me to do my best and help bring out the best in others, too. “The coaches were completely dedicated to the team and making sure we succeeded,” Anderson said. “I think everybody saw that in our last scrimmage before we got out of school.” Going into the spring of 2020, hopes were high. “We were going to have a really good season,” Anderson said. “After playing those first two scrimmages, anybody who saw us knew that we were going to be aggressive, and we had put in a lot of work in the offseason. “We had the endurance. We had the training. We were ready.” And then COVID-19 hit, cutting the season short as the spread of the novel virus across the United States prompted schools to close for the rest of the school year. When she first heard that they weren’t going to be in school for two weeks, she stayed optimistic that they were still going to have a season. “But then as soon as they announced that we weren’t going back, soccer was the first thing that popped in my head,” she said. “I realized that I wasn’t going to get to have those

memories – have my senior night or have the chance to make it to states or anything. “I’ve come to terms with it now,” she said. “But every now and then, it still kind of hits me and I get upset all over again.” The pandemic has motivated Anderson towards her future goals by helping her stay in shape more. “Soccer has always been such a big part of my life. ... It’s always been my way of exercise and a way to relieve stress,” she said. “Now I’ve had to find other ways to do that.” She has gone on hikes, on runs around her neighborhood and on walks with her friends. She’s also been playing soccer with a few of her friends. Anderson will be attending Virginia Tech and plans to major in biology. While she won’t be playing soccer for the college team, she said she’ll probably try out for a club or intramural team. “Playing soccer has helped me find an outlet for stress,” she said, “and that’s something I’ll carry on to college.” Soccer helped her realize how important it is to have people whom you trust in your life. “On the field I need to be able to trust my teammates that they’re going to make the right decision or the right pass or be in the right spot to receive a cross,” she said. “And in life, all relationships are built on trust, and it’s important to surround yourself with people who support your goals and want what’s best for you.” With the pandemic, it’s been a matter of realizing what you can and can’t control and just worrying about what you can control, Anderson noted. “None of us could’ve predicted this, that our senior year would end this way,” she said. “There’s nothing we can do, so I would just stay safe and stay inside and keep your head up and just look forward to what’s going to come.” She’s excited to see what next season will bring for the Goochland Bulldogs. “Because I’m definitely going to come back and have to watch them.”

Woolfolk earns elite honor Haughton picks up 8 offers By Eric Kolenich, Times-Dispatch

By Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor

The past two months have dragged by for Jay Woolfolk. The Benedictine junior has spent the days taking online classes, throwing baseballs and training for the next football season. But on Thursday morning, the last day of classes for the Cadets, Woolfolk got some big news. His baseball coach, Sean Ryan, called to let him know that Woolfolk had been named the baseball state player of the year by Gatorade. The athletic beverage brand has named the top high school player in each sport in every state since the 1985-86 school year. Because there wasn’t much of a high school baseball season, the 2020 winners were chosen on past accomplishments. As a sophomore, Woolfolk (6-foot-1, 200 pounds) went 6-0 on the mound with 58 strikeouts in 37.1 innings pitched, and the Cadets won the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I state championship. He was on the mound when the Cadets recorded the final out of the championship game, and Woolfolk earned the save. Then in the fall of his junior year, playing quarterback, he led the football team to the state title. He’s been named secondteam All-Metro as both a baseball and football player. Benedictine’s baseball team played one game in 2020 before the season was shut down. Within a matter of days, sports were ceased, school buildings were closed and education transferred to an online format. “Everything happened so quick,” Woolfolk said. “I really wish I could have played.”

Leon Haughton remembers it like it was yesterday. He remembers those times when he was a 4-yearold playing with the 8- and 9-year-olds. He can remember not touching the field until the final two minutes of every game. Fast forward to Saturday, April 4. That day, the 6-foot-4 wide receiver from Benedictine announced his first Division I collegiate offer from Penn State University. Within less than 40 days, the sophomore had eight DI offers to his name. “It’s an amazing feeling. It’s moments like these you dream about, but you never think about, ‘What if it actually happens?’” Haughton said. “I am humbled and excited at the same time.” After receiving his first offer, Haughton from April 9 to May 12 announced collegiate offers from Virginia, Boston College, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, Nebraska, Buffalo and Wake Forest. Reaching this point for Haughton was the result of “a lot of praying, countless hardworking hours and, last but not least,” his coaches. “I know that my coaches have been looking out for me when it has come to my recruitment,” he said. “This wouldn’t be possible without my coaches!” Haughton this past season made 30 catches for 600 yards and seven touchdowns. His season highlights included two touchdown receptions of 31 and 33 yards in a 49-26 win over Catholic, 109 receiving yards on four catches in a 47-0 win over King William,

Missing the 2020 season gave Woolfolk time to rest up. He suffered a freak injury before the season began, tearing the meniscus in his right knee while swinging a baseball bat. It was painful for a second, he said, then he couldn’t straighten his leg. He missed the beginning of the year but was due to return in April. Had the season been played as normal, the state championship game would have been contended last Saturday. Woolfolk has kept conditioning his arm, throwing 60 or 70 pitches per week. His velocity touched 94 mph hour this week, he said, with his fastball mostly sitting between 90 and 92. “As he walks to the mound, he doesn’t look like he’s going to gas it up there at 90-plus,” St. Christopher’s coach Tony Szymendera said. “But then he does -- repeatedly and effortlessly.” Jay’s dad, Pete Woolfolk,

played basketball at the University of Richmond and was named to the school’s hall of fame. He helped lead the Spiders to the Sweet Sixteen in 1988. Baseball America ranks Jay the No. 35 prospect in the country in the Class of 2021. He has committed to the University of Virginia to play both football and baseball, but he’ll also be considered a highlevel Major League Baseball draft pick next spring. The last local player to win this award was Steward’s Nic Enright in 2015. Nathan Kirby (2012) and Austin Stadler (2008), both of James River, also won it. Because Woolfolk just finished his junior year, he has the chance to win the award twice. That hasn’t happened since Justin Upton of Great Bridge won it in 2004 and 2005. Upton has played in the major leagues the past 13 seasons.

Benedictine football teammates Leon Haughton (2) and Nick Turner (8) walk away from the end zone following a play in the Benedictine Cadets’ 2019 Homecoming game versus Woodberry Forest on Oct. 19.

97 yards and a 63-yard touchdown reception on three catches in Benedictine’s 56-28 state semifinal win over Trinity Episcopal and 63 yards on two catches in the Cadets’ 2019 Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I state championship triumph over rival St. Christopher’s, 14-6. In his big-play touchdown versus Trinity in the state semifinals, Haughton broke away from the cornerback, who hesitated as Nick Turner rolled around to his left and aired out the pass to a wideopen Haughton, who secured the catch at the 20-yard line and kept running the rest of the way to the house. He also had a catch to remember against Georgetown Prep. From the opponent’s 15-yard line, he shot past the defensive back who shifted over to try and cover him, then leaped up in the end zone in front of another defender who jumped up. Haughton highpointed the ball and landed on

his feet in the end zone, having secured the touchdown reception. With all sports currently on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Haughton’s main priority has been staying in shape as he prepares for his high school junior season. Certain days of the week, he works on his hip and flexibility. He’ll go on runs around his neighborhood, and he’ll go to the field a few times every week to work out with a few of his teammates and work on his route running, speed and conditioning. “As soon as I received these offers, I was very humbled and honored,” Haughton said. “Going into next season I want to make sure that each and every college that has offered me will not regret their decision. “With that being said, I can’t let them down. I’m determined to get better!” he said. “This year I will be better than last year and next year I am going to be better than this year.”

CANCER • Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, do not feel bad about caring for yourself this week, even if you must put your needs above the needs of others. How can you help others without first helping yourself?

TAURUS • Apr 21/May 21 A conflict between your personal values and those of a larger group may not make you popular with everyone, Taurus. That is alright, as you need to stick to your beliefs and feelings.

LEO • Jul 23/Aug 23 It is okay to be skeptical from time to time, Leo. Just do not let negative perceptions bog you down. Realize there are moments when things are right and you can forge ahead.

GEMINI • May 22/Jun 21 Hold your tongue when others ask for your opinion this week, Gemini. You may not be able to take things back once the words are said. Bow out graciously instead.

VIRGO • Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, you may have an idea of what your relationship should look like, but it may be built on unreasonable perceptions. Get to the heart of your partner this week.

LIBRA • Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, it may take a leap of faith to get to the next level in your career. Instead of taking the safe path, you might need to change things up a bit to ensure action.

CAPRICORN • Dec 22/Jan 20 Clear and concise conversations will compel others to see your side of the story, Capricorn. You will probably gain a few extra supporters in the process.

SCORPIO • Oct 24/Nov 22 A project that once inspired you, Scorpio, may no longer seem worthy of your time. You’re not fickle; you just want to maximize productivity. Something new will turn up.

AQUARIUS • Jan 21/Feb 18 This week you will get a chance to express your values in a new way, Aquarius. Convey your feelings with gusto so that you can get the message out to as many people as possible.

SAGITTARIUS • Nov 23/Dec 21 Love isn’t always easy, Sagittarius. Oftentimes you have to work at it to make it stronger. If you’re willing to put in the effort, you will reap the rewards.

PISCES • Feb 19/Mar 20 How you are feeling inside may be at odds with the way you are portraying yourself on the outside. You don’t always have to hide feelings, Pisces.

THIS WEEK’S ANSWERS

ARIES • Mar 21/Apr 20 Something is stirring in your life, but you can’t zero in on what needs to get done at this point in time, Aries. But you will get your focus and be able to zero in on the tasks at hand.
