County voters reminded of option to cast ballot at home
Portion of proceeds from weekend event will help find new home for history-focused group
By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Despite ongoing closures and restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, Goochland’s Office of the General Registrar remains committed to serving county residents and providing critical information regarding the upcoming June Primary. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Virginia Department of Elections as well as the Goochland County Office of the General Registrar is encouraging all voters to protect their health and the health of others and vote from home. The Department of Elections has announced that all voters can use reason code “2A- My disability or illness” to vote absentee in the upcoming June Primary. Every voter that votes absentee by mail is one less voter in line on Election Day, limiting the risk of spreading the virus within the community and protecting those that serve as Officers see Voting > page 8

Workers were recently seen placing a cross on the bell tower of Benedictine College Preparatory’s soon-to-be completed new gymnasium complex. Sadly, the Goochland school said farewell to beloved long-time administrator Father Adrian Harmening on May 22. For more on that story, see page 3.

Faith versus Fear
Hebrews 11:27 “By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as seeing Him who is unseen.” The essence of the age-old dichotomy of how life is lived and the world is viewed is 1) a faith-in-Godview or 2) a fear-of-the-unknown-darkness-view. Moses lived the former because he saw what others did not see – God and the reward. One sees or is blind. Faith gives boldness, fear paralyzes. Jesus said: “Do not fear…Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” (Revelation 2:10) Faith overcomes fear and “…faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17) If you’re interested in further study of God’s word, meet with us Wednesday evenings at 6:30. Benedictine College Preparatory bids farewell to beloved priest By Roslyn Ryan Editor
D
isciplined, fair, steadfast, faithful. To anyone who attended Benedictine College Preparatory at any point over the last 65 years, Rev. Adrian W. Harmening could have been summed up with those words. But it was also clear on May 18, as news of Harmening’s death spread throughout the community of students, faculty members and alumni who had known him, that another adjective was just as fitting: beloved. In July 1955, shortly after being ordained as a priest, Father Adrian arrived at Benedictine High School in Richmond for a one-year assignment that would end up lasting over six decades. Over those years he would serve as a teacher, disciplinarian, and eventually a principal. His goal, he liked to say, was to make saints out of all of his students. While he maintained the highest standards for the young men he led, it was never in doubt how deeply he cared for
them. Abbot Placid Solari, who now serves as the Abbot of Belmont Abbey Monastery and the chancellor of Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina, was a student at Benedictine during the priest’s tenure as principal. Solari remembers Father Adrian as strict, yes, but always fair, and as someone who set a sterling example for the students at Benedictine. “He knew that his job was to turn teenage boys into responsible young men,” Solari said. “He was always firm, but also friendly. You could relate to him, and you always knew that he cared about you.” Up until his last day, it has been said, Father Adrian could still recall the name of each student who had attended Benedictine during his time there. In the monastery, Father Adrian served in various capacities including his appointments as Novice Master, Prior and Canonical Administrator. He also served for 20 years as Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Richmond, for 28 years as Catholic Chaplain for the Boy Scouts in
Virginia, and as Chaplain for Knights of Columbus Councils 12525 and 395, and the Navy League Richmond Council. Father Adrian desired, above all, to serve God: “All I ever wanted from the time I could walk,” he said, “was to be a priest.” Born William Terrence Harmening, Father Adrian was born to Fred and Fidelis Harmening in Defiance, Ohio on May 24, 1927, and was raised in Connellsville, Pennsylvania. He was predeceased by his parents, as well as his sister, Betty, and brothers Frederick H. and Carl T. Harmening. He had seven nephews and two nieces. He was educated by the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh and influenced by the Benedictine Monks of St. Vincent’s Archabbey, Latrobe, Pa., who occasionally celebrated Mass at his parish. Following graduation from Pittsburgh’s Immaculate Conception School, which he attended for both grammar and high school, he enlisted in the armed services, needing his mother’s permission, as he was only 17 years of age. As unrest continues, reflection is needed By Roslyn Ryan Editor
These days, as the tragedy of what happened to George Floyd continues to stir unrest in communities across the United States, many Americans have been forced to examine their own attitudes and the way their experiences have shaped the way they look at people who are different from them. Years ago, as a very young woman, I took a job as a secretary for a small building contractor. Low and behold, the position ended up consisting of far less secretarial work and far more time spent helping out when an extra hand was needed, whether that was hanging sheet rock, laying tile or any of a million other similar tasks. One day a few months after I
started, I was helping one of the carpenters—an African-American man in his early 60s--on a project. After a few hours, seeing that things were coming along well, we decided to break for lunch. We were both dressed for messy work, covered in dust and flecked with paint, and as we searched the aisles of a nearby convenience store for something quick to eat we discussed how we would wrap up the work once we were back on the job site. I don’t remember exactly what was said, or what we eventually picked out to eat, but the next part of the story is as clear as if it had happened yesterday. “Ma’am,” I heard a voice say sharply from behind me, with an urgency that was impossible to miss. “Is this man bothering you?”
It still pains me to this day that my initial reaction was merely to be momentarily confused. Slowly — too slowly — it dawned what was happening. The clerk behind the counter had fixed my coworker with an icy glare, one that communicated his message as clearly as if it had been scrawled on the wall: Leave that white woman alone. Only later, after we left the store, would the anger, the shock and the embarrassment begin to wash over me as I reflected on that moment. In the store, all I could manage was to say curtly that we were together and drop the matter, not wanting to make a scene. My coworker, a Vietnam veteran who had served his country abroad and been forced to fight for his own rights at home, simply waved it off. His look, too, was unmistakable:
He had experienced this a million times before. In the years since I’ve witnessed plenty of instances like this, and heard from other people of color about their own experiences of denigration and disrespect. In the end, what happened to my coworker isn’t the same as what happened to George Floyd, whose death has sent millions into the street seeking justice. But it stands to reason that, if we’re ever going to put an end to the worst examples of injustice, we are going to have to find a way to stop those lesser offenses, those small affronts to people’s dignity that nevertheless undermine their humanity. As human beings, no matter our color or creed, we own each other nothing less.

Letters to the Editor Taking part in Census will ensure Goochland County’s future success Dear Editor, In Goochland County, regardless of age or citizenship status, all persons living in the Community count. Every 10 years there is a Census Bureau survey that asks you to give your input on the number of persons living in your household. This information (population count) is used to help determine the amount of resource funding that will be allocated to the community to help pay for hospitals, emergency services, schools, roads, and more. As a School Board representative, I am proud to support the 2020 Census. Your data is confidential. Federal law protects your responses, which cannot be shared with law enforcement, immigration agencies, or housing authorities. Your time is important…I know that; and the quality of your community is important…I know that also. So, please take a moment to complete the 2020 Census online, by phone, or by mail. Scenes from Goochland football’s season Staff Report
For an athletic program, success can be measured in various ways. Success can be how much a team grows over a certain span of time, or simply whether or not a team wins the highest type of championship that it can win in its league. While Goochland football still seeks its first state championship since besting Essex County in 2012, the team has remained a perennial contender, and a force to be reckoned with, in every single one of the seven seasons since. In the past four years, the Bulldogs went 51-5, won two regional championships, played in three state semifinal games and one state championship matchup in 2018 and competed in the third round of the playoffs in all four years. Goochland’s head coach Alex Fruth is 26-3 in his first two years at the helm of the Bulldogs. Goochland this past season went 12-2, won the Class 3, Region B championship in File photos by Jim Ridolphi/Goochland Gazette

Goochland’s C.J. Towles (8) runs the football in a first-round home playoff game versus Independence. Goochland defeated Independence, 42-6.
From left: Goochland’s Devin McCray (7) runs the football while his longtime teammate, friend and neighbor Kindrick Braxton (11) blocks Cumberland’s Taron Yancey in Goochland’s first home game of the 2019 season, in which Goochland defeated Cumberland 55-6; Goochland’s Conner Popielarz (10) breaks free while Devin McCray (7) works to keep a James Monroe player away from his teammate in the Class 3, Region B championship game, which Goochland won, 20-7; Goochland’s Kameron Holman (2) reaches out for a catch in the Bulldogs’ Class 3 state semifinal matchup at Hopewell’s Merner Field. The Blue Devils defeated the Bulldogs 35-28, and the Bulldogs ended the 2019 season with a final record of 12-2.

Football continued from >9 its first year moving up from Class 2 to Class 3 and gave the Richmond area’s sole Virginia High School League state champion, Hopewell, a battle to remember, falling just short of the victory, 35-28, in the state semifinals. Multiple Goochland senior football standouts will be competing at the next level, including: Devin McCray (University of Richmond), Kindrick Braxton (Christopher Newport University), Quincy Snead, (Shenandoah University), NyJavion “Peej” Timberlake (Shenandoah) and Le’Shon File photos by Jim Ridolphi/Goochland Gazette Washington (Ferrum College). friends and was never far from his well-played Martin guitar. “The guitar didn’t come alive until I started dating Pat. She made the music.” Above all, Mr. Sage loved his family, friends and Goochland County. Mr. Sage served on several boards including the Multiple Sclerosis Society Richmond Chapter where his role as fundraiser inspired him to help create the Great James River Raft Race in 1975. He was a board member at the Goochland Family Services (CARES) where he helped organize the Commonwealth Cup polo matches as a fundraising event. He was a member of the Willow Oaks Country Club, the Commonwealth Club, the
Deep Run Hunt Club where he served as President of the board from 1994 to 1996 and the Trinity Episcopal High School Board of Trustees where he served as Chairman. Mr. Sage was a “renaissance man,” as described by a friend, who will always be remembered for his great sense of humor and colorful storytelling. A graveside funeral service will be held for immediate family members at Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church in Goochland, Va. In lieu of flowers, you may consider a memorial donation to Goochland CARES, 2999 River Road West, Goochland, Va. 23063. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.blileys.com.

By Taylor Adams Hanover Master Gardener Intern
At Virginia Cooperative Extension, we are big into details. Plants, bugs, and especially dirt (we call it soil out of respect). We want to know why it does what it does, what we can do with it and data to prove its capabilities. One of the services the Hanover Extension office offers the public is soil testing. Soil testing provides individuals with a variety of metrics on their soil’s characteristics and fertility. If your soil is deficient in a particular nutrient, the test report provides a thoughtful, researchbased fertilizer recommendation to improve your soil’s fertility. These tests are invaluable. Without them, gardening is a gamble. Soil sample kits are available at all times right outside the Hanover County Extension Office’s door (13015 Taylor Complex Lane, Ashland). If you would like more information, visit VCE’s website or call your extension agent (804752-4310). Virginia Cooperative Extension has ample resources to help you understand the report, but we think it prudent to spend a little extra time on both the “how” and the “why” of the fertilizer recommendation. Since the “how” is rather tedious, frankly, let’s start with the “why.” First, do no harm. Spoiler alert: soil test reports are complicated. At first glance, they seem like a foreign language. What a riot of numbers, abbreviations, and scientific language! They leave many people daydreaming about the good old days when we just guessed how much fertilizer our gardens needed – “Weren’t those days great? Weren’t we happy then? Why should I subject myself to all this extra work?!” Well, several reasons. First of all, no matter what Bruce Springsteen says, the good old days weren’t as good as you think they were. They weren’t even that long ago! Second, there is a dead zone in the Chesapeake Bay precisely the size of our collected wild guesses. And third, a little thought based on a little information will make you a better gardener. It may even save you money. The principle here is that your garden needs
what it needs, and nothing more. If you’re guessing, you’re probably guessing wrong. And if you’re overdoing it, you’re polluting. And you’re wasting money. When confronted with this information, the great temptation is to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Fertilizer – organic and synthetic – is a tool, just like a spade or hoe. Granted, it’s an easy tool to use recklessly, which gives it a bad name. When fertilizer is applied at the correct time in the correct amounts, it does wonders without doing harm. We are all stewards of the nutrients in our gardens. Our work has immediate local consequences, in that it affects the quality of the things we grow. It also has longer, broader consequences for the health and sustainability of our ecosystem. It’s important to understand that this is not a binary choice. In a manner of speaking, we can eat our cake and have it too – but only if we take care. Now, let’s talk about the details. Wait! Nobody said there was math involved! Your soil’s nutrient levels are charted in the test report. Each nutrient is listed in units (i.e. parts per million or pounds per acre) and given a rating based on ideal levels (i.e. low, sufficient, or high). Nitrogen, the nutrient darling, is not listed in this chart; it is too mobile in the soil and thus too fickle to warrant analysis. The other nutrients (most notably Phosphorous and Potassium) are more dependable. These are the basis of the fertilizer recommendation. All fertilizers – synthetic and organic – have an analysis listed on their packaging, which gives the percentage by weight of macronutrients (Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium or N-P-K) in the product. For example, 10-10-10 synthetic fertilizer is 10% N, 10% P, 10% K. These percentages are used to calculate the amount of fertilizer your garden needs based on the soil test recommendation. Fertilizer recommendations are given by nutrient per area (i.e. apply 2 lbs. N/1000 sq. ft.). The area specified in the report can vary. Depending on your situation, the recommendation could be given per 100 square feet, per 1000 square feet, or per acre. Pay close attention, as your calculation will vary with the figure used in the recommendation. Also, the total
amount of fertilizer used will vary by the square footage of your garden. So how does one go about calculating the amount of fertilizer their garden needs based on the soil test report’s recommendation? I thought you’d never ask. First, take a good look at the recommendation. How many pounds of each nutrient does your garden need? Use your newfound knowledge of fertilizer packaging to select a fertilizer whose proportions of macronutrients are similar to the proportions of macronutrients needed by your garden. For example, 10-10-10 is a good fit for a recommendation that specifies an application of 2 lbs. N, 2 lbs. P, and 2 lbs. K, because the proportion of nutrients in the fertilizer equals the proportion of nutrients in the recommendation. It doesn’t always work out clean and simple. Sometimes the nutrient needs are way out of proportion, in which case several incomplete fertilizers – those that lack one or two macronutrients – can be blended. For more information, see VCE Publication 424-035. Once you have selected a fertilizer, you must calculate the amount of the particular fertilizer needed to satisfy the rate specified in the recommendation. Generally, these calculations are done using the Nitrogen figure, since it’s so flighty in the soil. Divide the rate by the Nitrogen content of the fertilizer you have selected. Remember to express this percentage as a decimal (i.e. 10% is expressed as 0.10). For example, to figure the amount of 10-10-10 needed to apply 2 lbs. N/1000 sq. ft., divide 2 by 0.10, which equals 20 lbs. In other words, 10-10-10 must be applied at a rate of 20 lbs./1000 sq. ft. in order to apply Nitrogen at a rate of 2 lbs./1000 sq. ft.. Now put that figure in your back pocket. You’ll need it in a moment. Next, divide the area to be fertilized by the area specified in the recommendation. Let’s use the same example, and let’s assume your garden is 650 sq. ft.. Divide 650 by 1000, which equals 0.65 (or 65 percent). Now you have both terms of the equation! Multiply them together. In our example, that’s 20 multiplied by 0.65, which equals 13. So, it takes 13 lbs. of 10-10-10 to apply 2 lbs. of Nitrogen to 650 sq. ft..
