EDA grant will help county businesses’ e-commerce effort Contributed report
The Economic Development Authority (EDA) for the County of Goochland, Virginia has created and adopted an e-Commerce grant program directed to help small businesses in the community impacted by COVID-19. The goal of the grant is to provide financial assistance to local businesses who have had to shift their business model to a more digital platform to accommodate the closure or limited hours of business due to COVID-19 guidelines. The e-Commerce grant was approved by the EDA in April 2020, and the County is actively accepting and approving applications during this time. Seven small business have already been approved for the grant. The grant program operates on a reimbursement basis and has a maximum award amount, per approved application, of $500.00 or 50 percent of the total proj-
ect costs, whichever is less. Project costs that can be reimbursed include digital marketing, website redesign, and e-commerce website improvement. Projects must have taken place no earlier than March 1, 2020 and are in direct result of the impact of COVID-19. Applicants may apply for completed or proposed projects. The deadline for the grant is rolling, and applications will continue to be accepted while the Commonwealth is in a state of emergency for COVID-19. Applications are available for download at www. g o o ch l a n d f o r b u s i n e s s . com, and can be e-mailed or dropped off at the Goochland Business Center building located at 2931 River Road West, Goochland VA 23063. 1973, and in 1983 he received a Ph.D. in Marine Science through VIMS from William and Mary. He began work at the Bureau of Shellfish Sanitation, a division of the Virginia Health Department, as a pollution control specialist in 1974 and retired from the Bureau in 2014, having served as Director for more than 20 years. He led the department with his calm and fair manner, always willing to listen and guide to the best of his ability. Cancer took Bob’s physical presence from us, but it never robbed him of his sunny spirit and positive attitude. He loved his family and friends above all else. He was an adored and adoring father to James and Clay and “Grendy” to his grandsons. Bob and his wife, Grace, generously extended their hospitality to a wide circle of friends, each of whom they made to feel special. Bob’s interests and passions were many, and he was ever curious and ready to learn all he could about the natural world. He loved fly fishing, identifying mushrooms, trees, plants and birds, and paddling the James River and one very special lake in Maine. Nurturing plants was a primary source of joy, and he spent close to 35 years turning the Goochland red clay around their home into rich, healthy soil for his many vegetable and flower gardens. Bob was one of the kindest men you could ever meet, and always generous with his time and energy. He found great pleasure in the happiness of others and he was a genuine listener. Even as his illness diminished his energy, he still greeted the world with a big smile and an inquiring mind. Bob is survived by Grace, his wife of 44 years; sons, James (Laura) and Clayton; grandsons, Isaac and Asa; sister, Dianne (Granville); and brother, Pierre (Betsy); and many other family members are friends too numerous to name. As we are unable to gather to hold a celebration of his life at this time, we invite you to listen to a song that Bob had wanted to be played at his service, “No hard feelings” by the Avett Brothers. Listen, think of Bob as you do, and hold him in the Light. You are invited to consider donations to The Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Prostate Cancer Foundation,
Sierra Club and Shiloh Quaker Camp or a cause that you deem appropriate to Bob’s memory. Online condolences may be made at affinityfuneralservice.com.
ROBERT F. WILLIAMS Robert Francis Williams, 72, formerly of Midlothian and Maidens, passed away peacefully at his home in Frederick County, Virginia, on May 22, 2020. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Dolores (daughter of Henry and Mary Betler); and son, Kristian of Portland, Oregon; one brother, Steve (Arlene) of Beverly, West Virginia; and two sisters, Peggy (Dee) of Frostburg and Connie (Dave) of Silver Spring, Maryland. Also surviving are nine nieces and nephews and 10 great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Oliver and Jeanne (Sutton) Williams; brother, David; nephew, Ben Thomas; and great-niece, Cimarron Thomas. Bob was born on September 12, 1947, in Buckhannon, West Virginia. He was a 1965 graduate of Elkins High School, where he was a leader in sports -- track, baseball, basketball and football. At 18 years of age, he was a deacon in the Valley Bend Presbyterian Church. Bob was a proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. He credited his military service for putting him on the path to becoming a computer systems analyst and programmer supervisor. In the mid-1970s, he was responsible for the National Bank of Fairfax being the first bank in Virginia to furnish each teller with a computer terminal. Bob was a member of Byrd Presbyterian Church in Goochland, Virginia, where he served as an elder, adult Sunday school teacher and treasurer. He served on the board of directors and in the position of treasurer for Habitat for Humanity of Goochland. Services will be held in West Virginia when circumstances permit. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in Bob’s memory to Richmond Fisher House, Attn: Wayne Walker, 1201 Broad Rock Blvd., Richmond, Va. 23249 or at Richmond Fisher House.org.

Four local students earn Memory Master awards Contributed Report
MANAKIN – Classical Conversations of Goochland is celebrating four students achieving a nation-wide testing of over 500 facts from eight subjects as part of the Classical Conversations Memory Master program. Classical Conversations is a homeschool community that follows the Classical Education model and is available to support homeschooling families with a Christcentered curriculum. The test lasts about two hours and has eight subjects the students recite memorized facts. For the 2019-2020 academic year, they were tested four times over two to three weeks, and includes a chronological timeline of 160 events and people, historic events, including The French Revolution, World War 1 and 2, the formation of the United Nations, the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe and free elections in South Africa; 122 geographical locations primarily on the Europe- Asian continent; science, including facts in ecology, astronomy and physics, including the Laws of Thermodynamics and Newtons Laws of Motion;
Latin verb endings in the first conjugation; English grammar facts; math multiplication tables to the 15s, common squares, cubes, basic geometry formulas, unit conversions and reciting all 45 U.S. Presidents. Each Memory Master successfully recalls with 100% accuracy the information spent learning over 24 weeks. This method of learning promotes long-term memory and creates pegs of learned materials that will grow as they continue to gather more information regarding the events and details. The four Memory Master students: Claire Breedlove, Colin Getter, Dominic Scarola and Sam Penfield were between 8 and 11 years old at the time of testing. “This is a very difficult task the students have accomplished. They spend months preparing for this test and few students accomplish this mastery. They have worked very hard and should be proud of this honor,” Terri Scarola, director of Classical Conversations of Goochland, said. “This is our second year as a campus in Goochland. Last year we had one student accomplish this program –
this year, four students. And several other students have worked and mastered over 50 percent of the memory work. It’s all challenging. As an adult, I don’t think I could do it.” Scarola said. Classical Conversations is a nationwide program for home educators that helps train and equip parents and students in a Christian, classical education. Locally, they meet at Salem Baptist Church in Manakin. Elementary students: four years through sixth grade meets once a week, alongside a parent, during the Foundations and Essentials programs while older students in middle and high school have a drop of Challenge program. Classical Conversations hosts a free three-day homeschool conference for parents each summer called a Parent Practicum. This year the conferences will be held online and can register with the link: https://www.parentpracticum.com/ To learn more about the Classical Conversations program at Goochland, email Terri Scarola at terriscarolagoochlandcc@gmail.com or visit www.classicalconversations.com.

In wake of Floyd’s death, where do we go? By Laura McFarland Contributing Editor
I wanted to look away so many times. I, along with millions of others in this country, watched a video of a man murdered as he cried for his mother and told arresting officers he couldn’t breathe. I watched as a man was pinned down with an officer’s knee on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, several minutes after he had obviously gone slack and was only minutes away from death. It was the closest I felt I have ever been to watching a lynching. We all know the name George Floyd now. The fallout from his death on May 25 after police in Minneapolis pinned him to the ground despite his cries for help is literally tearing apart an already broken nation. I originally started this column a few days after George Floyd’s death,
but I stopped for a few reasons. First, I couldn’t find the words to describe the horror of what I was seeing. Second, the protests had started and then the looting followed. And I admit that I wanted to do something I had heard from a friend – search my heart about my own prejudices. It would be easy to post something talking about how George Floyd was clearly murdered, because that is honestly what I believe happened. In fact, I pity the court that thinks it is going to find an unbiased jury to try the case of the man (hopefully to follow men) who I believe responsible for his death. The official autopsy said he died of a heart attack, but an independent autopsy conducted at his family’s request and released June 1 concluded George Floyd died of asphyxiation due to neck and back compression. I know this will be an ongoing part of this developing story.
Anyone who watches the video of George Floyd’s murder, I would hope, would say what happened was wrong. There was still plenty of silence from many people, but there also were some people who spoke up that you normally wouldn’t see taking such a position, especially involving police officers. But what about what comes after? What about the peaceful protests and the chants of “Black Lives Matter,” which rubs so many people the wrong way? What about when the first skirmishes with police happen? What about when buildings and vehicles are set on fire? What about when businesses are looted? What about when someone else dies as a direct result of the protests? What about when the things I stand against – violence, breaking the law, hatred – try to overshadow that shared horror so many of us felt when we first saw the
video of George Floyd pleading on the ground for his life? How long does solidarity last in the face of all of that? Emotionally, the days that followed George Floyd’s death were beyond draining for me. As hard as it was, I challenged myself to take it all in and then look within to see how I truly felt in the face of everything that is happening. So, the days that followed were filled with reading stories and watching videos of how our nation was being rocked by the aftermath of this tragedy. In addition to regular news coverage, I have a wide range of friends and acquaintances on social media who literally have opinions and beliefs across the spectrum. That means I heard the cries of anger and disbelief from friends who never got off message about the see Floyd > page 8
Even among friends, you must pick your battles By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I met with a group of friends last week at a small picnic table peacefully located beside a lake for a remotely delivered lunch. It was our first gathering in months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and our bi-monthly restau-
rant visits seem like distant memories from a quickly disappearing past. For most of us, the lunches serve as a way to catch up on news of friends, often concentrating on whom is the latest to move to Florida. It’s a diverse group of friends, uniquely united by our differences rather than a group of common interests and we agree on very little. Some of the informal group are

Letters to the Editor In human beings, there is potential for both greatness and failure Dear Editor, Imagine… Imagine a world where the same passion and community outrage we are witnessing for the injustices of racism were directed at drug dealers, sexual predators, prostitution, gang violence, murders; and the disrespect of elders, innocent babies and children, families, property, education, individual rights, legitimate businesses, law, religion and hope. Where will the people in these ravaged communities go for food and other necessities now that businesses have been destroyed and looted? Are these communities now open to powerful gangs or other terrorist groups to come in and “save the day”? Who will be the people to come in and lay their lives on the line to protect the very streets where they were so recently taunted and even attacked? We all agree that We the People need all of our police officers and public safety professionals to follow through with their oath of office in all situations and with all people. There can be no tolerance or excuses for senseless killing on our streets. We must remember that as human beings there is potential for both greatness of the amazing kind and for failures of the most horrific kind. Imagine if we all sought greatness of the amazing kind by directing our passion from within our hearts to save our families and communities. Be compassionate. Be respectful. Be honest. Be brave. Be true to the dream of one America. Imagine and live one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. I wish you all Peace. Karen Horn Goochland see Letters > page 7

After weeks of fear, protesters must let police do their jobs Dear Editor, I know a lot of folks probably thought I was a fool for predicting riots in my April 9 letter but here we are after weeks of serious riots all across the U.S.. You may think the riots are a reaction to a police killing but that was just the spark that lit the fuse to an underlying seething public rage. The root causes of the riots go far beyond the unfortunate death of one black person by police, which statistically and historically is far less likely than the death of a white person at the hands of police. Almost everyone knows that police generally do a good job in protecting society but occasionally get a bad actor in their ranks that makes a big mistake. The real reason for the riots is that many Americans are

We rarely agree on anything and I’ve learned over the years that his opinions are genuine, however misguided. Everyone at the table commented on the topic, and the conversation quickly evolved to politics. “This governor doesn’t know what he’s doing,” one commented. “I’m glad we have him,” another responded. “We need a doctor in the house during this crisis.”

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
sick and tired of being treated as “serfs of our government,” and the government’s overburden some Coronavirus reaction was the “straw that broke the camel’s back.” Our Federal, state and local governments now control every aspect of our lives from the time we get up in the morning until we go to bed at night. Our ignorant politicians have been passing laws in every legislative session since the founding the republic and government employees have been adding administrative regulations on top of regulations as fast as possible to justify their jobs. Nothing is ever rescinded. There are probably enough pages of laws, rules and regulations on the books in this country to sink the Titanic. No one could ever possibly inventory all of them. Here are just some of the areas of our lives covered by Federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations: Professional and occupational licenses, financial, insurance and business licenses, drivers licenses, hunting and fishing licensees, boat licenses,
Car and trailer licenses, airplane licenses, road tolls, Seat belt and helmet laws, marriage licenses, alcohol license, concealed carry permit, pesticide application license, horse racing license, ABC license, banquet license, building permits, pond permit, mining permit, radio and TV broadcasting license, transportation licenses and permits, just to name a few. And then comes the Coronavirus with government mandated business closures putting many people into poverty and unpleasant mask and social distancing requirements. I think many Americans just got fed up with being treated as serfs by their governments and are acting out their displeasure by rioting. The peaceful protestors are just useful idiots feeding the frenzies created by left and right wing zealots who have real agendas. At this point the peaceful protestors need to get out of the way and go home so the police and National Guard can deal forcefully with the criminals doing the looting. And then the national
Coronavirus paranoia and knee jerk reaction should end immediately and America should get back to business as we intelligently accept the risks of the Coronavirus.
It didn’t take long for me to realize that this discussion was not headed for any resolution, and, for some reason, some at the table seemed disturbed by the back and forth. I could have said more. Does the fact that some people refuse to follow guidelines issued by health officials and people who know much more than I do about highly transmittable viruses concern me? Absolutely. And, yes, I wanted to say that my mask protects you and your mask protects me, but it wasn’t the time or place. Now, friends can disagree about just about anything and it really doesn’t matter and the conclusion seldom comes with long-term consequences. It’s the basis of our
years of combative banter, and the differences in philosophy often provide enlightenment, at least when my side of the argument prevails. We departed and went our separate ways, me on the way to the grocery store and my buddies heading to places that hopefully don’t require masks. I took special note of the sign on the door of the grocery store stating that no one could enter without a mask. It somehow provided me with more confidence in my position. That moral victory was short-lived as I entered the store and noticed numerous shoppers who decided the rules weren’t for them either. I suppose the encounter with friends and the visit to the local supermarket rein-
forced the idea that almost everything in America today has some sort of political implication — even the decision whether or not to wear a mask. While it doesn’t seem like a philosophical decision to me, I get the fact that some are reluctant to accept any governmental edicts. When it comes to my friends, do they get a pass for being inconsiderate and somewhat set in their ways even when it affects their fellow citizens? Well, they’re still my friends, but in the years I’ve known most of them, one thing has become abundantly clear: You have to pick your battles.

All people must know they matter, are worthy of love Dear Editor, “Don’t measure how valuable you are by the way you were treated. Always remember you matter, you’re important and you are loved, and you bring to this world things no one else can.” I share this quote on life’s important lessons from the story The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse for the benefit of the true nonviolent antiracism protesters. I say further: our country and our planet look to every person to get us to the next level of humanity.

Floyd
asking not to be treated like a second-class citizen because of the color of their skin. So, after all that “taking in” of information, here is what I decided. There is nothing I can say that hasn’t been said. It was said with the peaceful Black Lives Matter protests. It was said by Colin Kaepernick taking a knee in peaceful protest and being called unAmerican for it. It was said when celebrities used their platform to speak out about racism about industries such as film and pro-sports and being told they were misusing their positions. It was said when the family of Ahmaud Arbery cried out for justice after the 25-yearold unarmed black man was chased down while jogging through a Georgia neighborhood and shot and killed. Yes, it has been said, but, what the heck, I’ll say it, too – we have a problem with racism in this country. And just because we can drink out of the same water fountain now without it being considered illegal for some of us doesn’t mean that every problem Civil Rights activists were fighting against has been solved. If you really want to talk about what Dr. King might say about George Floyd’s murder and the cry for justice spreading across this nation as a result, remember there were pastors in Birmingham, Alabama, who thought of him and his followers as “outsiders coming in” and stirring up trouble. And his response in his letter from Birmingham City Jail included this very poignant message, which seems
to be ripped from the pages of today’s news coverage. “Moreover, I am cognizant of the interrelatedness of all communities and states. I cannot sit idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial ‘outside agitator’ idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider. “You deplore the demonstrations that are presently taking place in Birmingham. But I am sorry that your statement did not express a similar concern for the conditions that brought the demonstrations into being. I am sure that each of you would want to go beyond the superficial social analyst who looks merely at effects and does not grapple with underlying causes. I would not hesitate to say that it is unfortunate that so-called demonstrations are taking place in Birmingham at this time, but I would say in more emphatic terms that it is even more unfortunate that the white power structure of this city left the Negro community with no other alternative.” – MLK, August 1963 Laura McFarland is the editor of Powhatan Today newspaper. She may be reached at Lmcfarland@powhatantoday. com.
continued from >6 underlying problem of race in the United States. I saw the videos of peaceful protests happening all across the country. I saw the videos of law enforcement officers attacking protestors or shooting tear gas into crowds. I saw the videos of protestors threatening or attacking law enforcement officers. I also saw the videos and images of protestors protecting or hugging law enforcement officers. I saw the videos of looters ransacking stores. I saw the interviews with business owners – not the Target owners but the small business owners – devastated as they saw the rubble that used to be their hopes and dreams. I saw the Facebook posts that were very obviously fearmongering or outright lies meant to support a particular world view. I saw the Facebook posts of people who were simply heartbroken and couldn’t find the words to adequately express it. Lastly, I saw the many pictures of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with quotes about how violence never solves anything and along with pictures of protestors in the 1960s walking arm in arm. Few, if any, of these showed how many of these same nonviolent protests ended in protestors being beaten, gassed, or shot with water from fire hoses or the people sitting in jail for simply

Washington joining Ferrum as O-lineman By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
Le’Shon Washington’s football journey started during offseason workouts at the school gym prior to his freshman year at Goochland High School. It was Joe Fowler, then the head football coach before becoming the athletic director, who got him into the game. Washington would become part of the varsity team in his junior season, starting on the offensive line and playing both ways in key games. During Washington’s junior year, left tackle Tyler May taught him a lot. “He was football 24/7, working out, eating right,” Washington said of May. “He got me on the path to become a better lineman myself.” And with the help of his teammates, his coaches, his team’s focus on getting the job done and his own focus on staying in shape, working out and eating right, Washington has followed the path to playing football at the collegiate level. He will attend and compete for Ferrum College after committing to the school three weeks ago. “The coaching staff . . . they stood out the most to me, the way they tried to stay in touch,” Washington said. “It just felt like a family. It felt like it was the right fit.” Washington said that coach Bobby James, who had come down to scout him, has been in touch with him ever since Washington sent him his film. “He’s been in touch with me every single day, checks up on me,” Washington said. “The coaches are just very supportive.” He will play offensive guard for the Panthers. He feels that his speed and athleticism will be key components in helping him be strong at that position. In high school, he described himself as an aggressive player, and he noted that he would try to get into the opposing players’ heads. In addition to guard, Washington played at defensive tackle in games where his team switched to a five-

Senior offensive guard and defensive tackle Le’Shon Washington (55) stands with his teammates on the Goochland High School varsity football team.
“It just felt like a family. It felt like it was the right fit.” Le’Shon Washington on committing to Ferrum man front. On the offensive line, he helped pave the way for Goochland’s offense to tally up 3,591 yards total, including 2,151 rushing. He and his Bulldogs, under current head coach Alex Fruth, went 26-3 in two seasons, won two regional championships, played in two state semifinals and reached the state title
game in 2018. “When we went to states, that was a very big accomplishment,” Washington said. “Not many of us thought we could make it that far, but coach Fruth, he’s a very analytical coach. He likes to take risks and I believe he’s the reason we made it that far the first year.”
Goochland’s coaches, Washington said, were get-to-the-grind coaches. “We got done what needed to get done,” he said. Focusing on that, Washington felt, separated them from most other teams in the state. He also felt that the team bond has been key to Goochland football’s strong stretch of seasons. “Most of us had played since eighth grade and before that,” he said. “I think it’s the bond we all have with each other, knowing our weaknesses and knowing our strengths, putting it to use on the field.” In his preparation for playing at
the next level, Washington has been using the TeamBuildr app, throughout which his coach has been sending out workouts each week, to stay in shape. He’s looking forward to the experience of the stadium and the fans, as well as to how the athletes move and work on the college field. His goals for his first year are turning around the team’s record (Ferrum last year went 4-6 overall and 3-5 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play), bringing home the ODAC championship and making it to the NCAA playoffs.

Timberlake taking talents to Shenandoah By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
GOOCHLAND -- For NyJavion Timberlake, when it came to taking that next step, Goochland football played a major role in helping pave the path. There were the weight room sessions after long days of practice, the pre-practice meetings and afterpractice meetings with coaches Justin Fitzgerald and Lucas Gibbs and the high-speed tempo of the practices themselves. Timberlake felt it prepared him pretty well for college football. The Goochland High School senior will be taking that collegiate step with Shenandoah University and the Hornets’ football team after making his commitment on May 9. Timberlake was unable to visit Shenandoah’s campus because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but he reached out to a couple of the players to ask them about the school and how it was. After that, Shenandoah’s coaches reached out to him, and they checked in on him almost every day. “I feel like that really stood out to me – made me feel like I was actually wanted there,” he said. Timberlake described the Hornets’ football program as a “perfect-fit” team, and the players and coaches as really great people. “Everyone’s happy and excited for everyone. All their current players they have, they’re excited to see new faces come in, new players,” Timberlake said. “Coaches, they were really excited to see some new talent come into the program they have, and everything’s just, overall, great up there, in my opinion.” He’s looking forward to “playing with a great group of guys,” to creating new bonds and to being a difference maker on the team at the strong safety position on defense. One goal he definitely wants to achieve in his first year with his new team is win the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship. “I have a strong feeling that we

are going to do some great things up there this year.” He’ll also continue to play alongside Goochland High School teammate Quincy Snead, who will play on offense. “Having two Goochland boys on the same college football team is going to be great. I’m just excited to see how it goes,” Timberlake said. “I know it’s going to be a great experience over there with him.” The work and conditioning remain constant for Timberlake as he prepares for the collegiate level. He has Saturday workouts with people from Hermitage. He follows a home workout plan every night before he goes to sleep. On Tuesdays and Thursdays he’ll go on runs, and every time his peers from Goochland hit the football field, he’ll try his hardest to make it out there with them. Timberlake was a two-way player for Goochland football his senior
“I have a strong feeling that we are going to do some great things up there this year.” NyJavion Timberlake on Shenandoah University football season. At cornerback he tallied up 40 tackles, including 17 solo and seven for a loss, and caught one interception while also forcing two fumbles. He added four catches for 37 yards and a touchdown on offense. While he wasn’t a captain, Timberlake felt that he was a leader to his teammates, mainly through the example he set; he put in a ton of work after junior year, did the best he
could possibly do in everything and did what the coaches asked of him. Over the last two years he’s been part of a Bulldogs varsity program that went 26-3 under head coach Alex Fruth, won two regional championships, played in two state semifinal matchups and competed in the 2018 state title game. For Timberlake, it was amazing to play for the state championship alongside teammates who are brothers to him. And while he and his Goochland teammates didn’t get the result they wanted in the 2019 state semifinals, he said it was a blessing to play “against one of the best teams in Virginia and the best player in Virginia” in Hopewell and TreVeyon Henderson, respectively. A 12-year veteran on the gridiron, Timberlake first started playing football when he was six years old. Watching his brother play – how
he was really into football – was what got Timberlake into the game himself. “I just wanted to be like him.” There was also something about the physical aspect of football that made Timberlake fall in love with it. Being able to go out there and make your teammates, family and community happy while enjoying something you love – that’s what made him want to play even more. Growing up, Timberlake played for several different teams – including the Tuckahoe Tomahawks, the Goochland Youth Athletic Association (GYAA) teams, the Kanawha Redskins, the West End Tornadoes and the Ashland Vipers – and he also got to compete on the Metro Youth Football League All-Star team, which featured some Division I-level players, when he was 14. He and his teammates went 2-0 in the league they played in. “It was just an honor to play with them.” He and his Goochland varsity football teammates, who grew up playing together in GYAA, formed a brotherly bond. And the success they enjoyed over the last two seasons, Timberlake noted, was a result of how well the coaches brought the team together. “We’ve got Coach Gibbs who did early morning bible studies and a couple team dinners at his house. That really helped,” Timberlake said. “Coach Fruth brought everybody together, no matter the skill level you were, no matter how good or bad you were.” You were a football player in Coach Fruth’s eyes – he looked at everyone the same, Timberlake said. “I feel like that really helped us a lot, understand more of each other.” Timberlake praised the support of not just Goochland’s coaches, but also Goochland’s fans, athletes and teachers. “Without them,” he said, “we wouldn’t have Goochland football.” He’s grateful to his mom, grandmother, aunt and great aunt for always being there for him.

CANCER • Jun 22/Jul 22 Don’t put too many eggs in one basket, Cancer. Look for different opportunities to diversify your skill set and make yourself more attractive to both acquaintances and employers. LEO • Jul 23/Aug 23 There is little point focusing all your energy on a situation that you know will not go in your favor, Leo. Instead, start zeroing in on a different project or task. SCORPIO • Oct 24/Nov 22 Don’t be too hard on yourself if some poor news at work seems to be directly related to one of your assignments, Scorpio. You were only one factor in this situation.
AQUARIUS • Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, it may be up to you to step up and make up some of the financial deficit in your household when you get news that affects everyone. You can quickly recover.
SAGITTARIUS • Nov 23/Dec 21 Take as many moments as you can steal for yourself in the days to come, Sagittarius. Soon enough you will be too busy to sit and relax for any amount of time.
PISCES • Feb 19/Mar 20 New career goals may have to be put on hold for the time being, Pisces. Another issue takes precedence at the moment.
THIS WEEK’S ANSWERS
ARIES • Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, when faced with too many options, you may have difficulty making a final decision. This is when you may need to bring in a second opinion.
