Savoring the summer
For students returning to classroom, a new world
Gade takes majority of county vote in primary By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Plenty of precautions for COVID-19 in place as summer school begins By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Some Goochland County students are returning to the classroom this week for summer school instruction, though the experience for students, teachers and staff members is markedly different than it was just a few months ago. Unlike in March, when school buildings were last open to the public, reminders of the ongoing fight against COVID-19 are now impossible to miss. As the Commonwealth, along with the nation and the rest of the world, begins to move closer to what life looked like before COVID19, those tasked with ensuring a safe return to schools face a monumental challenge: how

The state Board of Education recognized 447 schools and six school divisions for high student achievement, continuous improvement, or innovative practices under the board’s exemplar performance school recognition program. The awards are based on performance and practice during 2018-2019 and prior years. This year, Goochland County Public Schools was among the only 6 divisions recognized for innovative practices in the Commonwealth. “I congratulate the principals, teachers, support professionals and students of all of these schools and divisions for the achievement, innovations and hard work recognized by these awards,” said Superintendent of Public Instruction James Lane. “I believe the success of these schools and school divisions will inspire learning communities across the commonwealth as they plan for the reopening of school and prepare to meet the instructional and socialemotional needs of students — especially students most impacted by the closure this spring.” This is the first year the board has issued the Innovative Practice award, which recognizes innovations implemented

over the course of two academic years that improve student outcomes. Goochland County Public Schools earned the award for division-wide innovative practices to develop lifeready students through implementation of the Profile of a Virginia Graduate and the 5 Cs: critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, and citizenship. Other divisions recognized for Innovative Practice include Hampton, Newport News, Shenandoah, Greene, and Roanoke schools. Schools, divisions, and local school boards earn recognition for exemplary innovative practices based on the following criteria: School- or divisionwide implementation for two full academic years of a new or creative evidence-based alternative to existing instructional or administrative practices aligned with one of the following priority areas: Closing achievement gaps among vulnerable and/or minority student groups; Developing an integrated STEM approach to learning; Building genuine relationships with families to support overall family well-being and children’s healthy development; Enhancing technol-
ogy infrastructure to increase student access to connected devices and the internet; Elevating the quality and character of the school environment so that it reflects the positive and support norms, goals, and values of the community; Retaining high-quality teachers; Developing life-ready students through implementation of the Profile of a Virginia Graduate and the 5 C’s framework (skills in critical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration, communication, and citizenship); Data provided by school or division demonstrate that the practice is meeting objectives and having a significant impact on outcomes for the targeted student population. “Success in life takes more than traditional academic knowledge,” said Dr. Steve Geyer, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction, “and our Profile of a Goochland Graduate prioritizes skill development like critical thinking, creativity, hard work, and personal responsibility. Our profile was eighteen months in the making — and I’m proud of the collaboration among our school and community stakeholders who helped bring this important work to life.”

GoochlandCares receives grant to help fight hunger Contributed report
On June 25, Kroger MidAtlantic presented nine of Feed More’s Agency Network members, including Goochland’s own GoochlandCares, with grants to obtain critically needed resources that will strengthen programming and expand outreach to people struggling with hunger throughout Central Virginia. Kroger made a combined donation of $40,000 to the hunger-relief community organizations and nonprofits through its Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative. such a donation to Feed More’s Agency Network for capacity building. Feed More’s Agency Network includes other nonprofit organizations that help the food bank extend its reach and positively impact more people struggling with hunger across Central Virginia. The funding helps the nine groups purchase much-needed items like freezer units, storage and supplies for a fresh garden project. Like many hunger-related organization, Feed More’s agencies have seen an uptick in need since March due to the economic effects of the pandemic.
“The members of our Agency Network are on the frontlines of fighting hunger and we’ve been inspired by their resilience, flexibility and dedication during these unprecedented times,” said Doug Pick, president and chief executive officer at Feed More. “We’re grateful to have compassionate and generous partners like Kroger who remain committed, now more than ever, to fighting hunger in the communities they serve. This grant will help our agencies strengthen and grow their operations to help even more of our neighbors in their times of need.”
Last year, Kroger MidAtlantic donated 16.5 million meals to charity and 3,606,296 pounds of food to food bank partners. Feed More collects, prepares and distributes food to neighbors in need throughout Central Virginia. With a service area that stretches across 34 counties and cities, Feed More’s comprehensive programs and network of nearly 300 agencies helps ensure our communities have access to healthy meals year round. Feed More is a proud member of Feeding America and Meals on Wheels America.
week, dozens of other changes and new procedures have been implemented in order to ensure a safe reopening of schools. Among them: Physical distance will be created between children on school buses (e.g. seat children one per seat except siblings who can sit in the same row) limiting capacity as needed to optimize distance between passengers. All students on buses will wear face coverings, as deemed developmentally and medically appropriate. Bus drivers and drivers of other county vehicles will use cloth face coverings while transporting students. Cleaning and disinfecting of buses and county vehicles will be conducted before and after each route. Materials on vehicles transporting students will include face coverings or shields for drivers, additional face coverings for students (who do not have face coverings), disinfectants, and hand sanitizer.
to large groups of students during Phase II. Students are allowed to enter the cafeteria in small groups to pick up meals that are put in covered containers and served by cafeteria staff wearing PPE. Cafeteria floors will be marked in 6-foot intervals for physical distancing and cashiers will be behind plexiglass. Parents will prepay for student meals so there will be no exchange of currency. After receiving their food, students will go back to the classroom to eat.

to continue educating, feeding and transporting students while still following the guidelines recommended by local health officials and the Centers for Disease Control. In Goochland, as in most other localities, that has meant plenty of training for all employees on how to protect themselves and stop the potential spread of the coronavirus, as well as greatly enhanced cleaning and disinfecting efforts across all facilities. Stockpiles of personal protective equipment —including disposable facemasks, gowns and gloves —are in place, and school nurses who have received training in contact tracing are serving as the point people for the COVID-19 team at each school. Face coverings are now required for nearly everyone in each building, and the layouts of classrooms, communal areas, and buses have been modified to ensure social disMeals tancing is maintained. GHS Robotics Team has plan to help get county better connected By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Call it robotics to the rescue. When Goochland County schools were forced to shut down on March 18 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, school administrators and teachers quickly turned to Internet-based instruction to help stay connected to students. But while some students were able to easily transition to online learning, a significant number of local students without reliable access to high speed internet found themselves forced to rely on print-outs picked up from the school. Soon, however, thanks to a partnership between the Goochland Education Foundation and the Goochland Robotics team, some areas of the county will soon have access to specially designed, easy-totransport mobile Wi-Fi units.
The mobile units, otherwise known as “Dog-Fi,” are the brainchild of current and now former GHS students Austin Payne, Demond Morris, Ivan Pudwill, David Dick and Ethan Martin. While the initial prototype is still being tested, the plan promises to help close the gap for students living in areas of the county where access to broadband internet is limited or nonexistent. Ideally, say the Dog-Fi creators, the unit will supply a Wifi-signal in a 200-foot radius. According to GEF Executive Director Cyndy Brown, the Dog-Fi locations will first be determined based on density and need, with additional units placed in easily accessible locations throughout the county. “We believe that the Dog-Fi hotspots will serve as a sustainable and reliable internet option even after the effects of
Covid-19 have subsided,” said Brown of the new units, which can be easily packed up and distributed throughout the county. Brown said the goal for the project is to create an aesthetically pleasing and functioning design with an emphasis on its effectiveness. The initial prototype will have two solar panels mounted on top of a wooden box, which will house electronics, routers, and batteries. The solar powered unit will be able to last for 4-5 days without sunlight, and an antenna will be attached to the outside of the unit to allow it to operate in areas with subpar cellular signal. At about three and a half feet tall by three and a half feet wide by three feet deep, the boxes are easy to store and transport, and built-in GPS capabilities allow for tracking and theft deterrence.

History offers inspiration, challenge to those who will write next chapter By Roslyn Ryan Editor
With the Class of 2020 now officially finished with high school, many of our newlyminted graduates are no doubt focused on what grand adventures lay ahead. Just for a moment, however, if you’ll indulge me, I’d like to humbly ask every member of the Class of 2020 instead to take a minute to look backwards. I once heard it said that we as a nation, as gifted as we are at so many things, often fail to produce students well-versed in history. This is in part because the history textbooks we insist on using are generally dreadful to read and often sanitized beyond recognition. Instead of igniting a passion for discovering the real, often flawed men and women who shaped our world, students are trained to memorize dates and view historical figures as unrelatable, one-dimensional characters. Unclear of how what happened “then” relates to “now”? Students of history will understand beyond a doubt, for example, that the people fighting for the rights of Black Americans today are standing on the shoulders of giants. Do the young
people taking to the streets in protest carry in their minds the image of bus boycotters in Baton Rouge and Montgomery, of Freedom Riders and lunch counter protesters? I hope so. I hope they know the names that never made the front pages — Claudette Colvin and Wyatt Tee Walker — and remember the hundreds of thousands of unheralded men and women who risked everything to provide a better future for those who would come after them. Perhaps knowing the legacy of which you are a part does not make one any more or less passionate about a cause. But understanding just how long the fight has been going on— and the sacrifices made long ago — could certainly bolster resolve when the going gets tough. Graduates, you have in your hand access to 10,000 libraries worth of information. There is almost no subject that you cannot, in a matter of seconds, begin to understand. My greatest hope for each and every member of the Class of 2020 is that you left your graduation ceremony not as someone who “was” a student, but as someone who is curious, energized and intent on learning everything there is to know about who you
are and where you come from. I hope you begin, if you haven’t already, to see history not as a handful of dates to be memorized but a vibrant, endlessly fascinating celebration of what human beings are capable of and how they have adapted and strategized and failed and succeeded. As you continue to move forward, may studying history offer both guidance and inspiration. When you find yourself facing what appear to be unprecedented challenges, you will learn that they are not. When the world seems to be spinning off its axis, you will take comfort in the fact that it has always managed to right itself. When you doubt whether you have what it takes to accomplish great things, you will have at the ready hundreds of examples of people who reached unimaginable heights after starting right where you are now. Graduates, one day the way you chose to spend your days will become part of the historical record. We here at the Goochland Gazette wish for you a prosperous road ahead, a lifetime of learning, and the kind of success that will inspire all who come after you.

Letters to the Editor Juneteenth march offered example of leadership, bravery Dear Editor, I’m writing to give thanks to Jessica Ali Ganyma and Letisha Brooks, two leaders in our community. On June 19th we were fortunate to have them organize a beautiful, peaceful, empowering Juneteenth March from Goochland High School to the Courthouse. They obtained all the permissions necessary, provided free water and snacks and had a local food truck onsite. They worked with local law enforcement to be sure we were protected, reminded us to stay calm and remember our mission if we encountered protesters and to not engage them. They also arranged for brilliant speakers. Local High School Students, parents and a local scholar, civil rights activist and playwright spoke the truth eloquently; on our country’s history, racism in our community and the need for equality in all things. Hundreds attended, wearing t-shirts and carrying signs with words like “Freedom” “I Cant Breathe” and “Black Lives Matter”. They do indeed. Jessica Ali Ganyma and Letisha Brooks brought together hundreds of Goochland citizens, young and old, of all races, to celebrate the freeing of slaves in Texas two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation outlawed slavery in the United States. Walking in that march was exhilarating and gave me hope. People drove past honking in support and cheering us on, many with a fist raised in solidarity.

There were people on the march route attempting to intimidate with sidearms and at least one AR-15. As a White woman I was astounded at the bravery of our youth marchers as supposed adults, one with with rifle slung over his shoulder, and many with handguns in view, illegally stood on Post Office grounds and screamed that Black lives didn’t matter. When we reached the courthouse and the rain started, our young people spoke eloquently on the racism they endured, but also on the strength of their families and community. Their parents rightly beamed. These children and young adults, even under the glaring eye of some hostile neighbors, moved me to tears. I can’t begin to understand how the “protesters” convinced themselves that the end of slavery, the freeing of brilliant, loving, people dragged to this country, their names stolen, their families stolen, their production stolen, their bodies beaten, was something to protest. I can only guess it’s fear and the inability to see how much we lose when we don’t embrace fully all people, their talents, their love, their strength. They must think that giving others freedom and access lessens the amount available to them. They lose out on so much with that narrow, fearful thinking. It’s important to give credit to the Black women who are on the front lines in this fight for justice and equality. They show the rest of us the way with their strength and untiring fortitude. Watching the ongoing violence against black bodies I know they have no choice in some ways. They have to protect the children they love, their husbands, brothers and themselves. Without them we will not find our way out of our ongoing racial issues to a place of real equality, peace and prosperity for all. Despite challenges, county once again pulls off successful election Editor, Goochland Gazette Another successful election has concluded with just over 10% of Goochland’s active registered voters participating in perhaps the most unusual election we have witnessed
since the August 23, 2011 earthquake primary. We are grateful for the support of County Administrator John Budesky, Deputy Administrator Derek Stamey, Emergency Services Chief Eddie Ferguson, the Board of the Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association, and the individual churches that opened their quarantined parish halls for use as polling places. We are, of course, grateful to the voters who exercised caution, kept social distances, and showed respect
to our poll workers through the use of masks and sanitizers. This was an election that demonstrated the extraordinary dedication to public service of our officers of election. Anderson continuing baseball career at CNU out there and compete and “let the chips fall where they may.” “If you try to think or try to do too much, that’s when you get yourself in trouble,” he said. “I just kind of like to have a relaxed mind, just be competitive and get out there and just do what I can do.” He said his slider is his go-to pitch.
By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
To Jack Anderson, there was nothing like the Benedictine baseball team in 2019. “I don’t think there’ll ever be a better high school team in Virginia than that one. Just the camaraderie and then the skill we had on that team, it was like nothing I had ever seen before, and it was really just a relaxed group,” he said. “Words just can’t describe how good that team was. Just from top to bottom, there were no weaknesses, there were no holes or anything.” His teammates included, but were far from limited to: Coastal Carolina’s Casey Green, Tulane’s Brett Cook, Phillies organization player Jamari Baylor, University of Virginia baseball and football dual-sport commit Jay Woolfolk, and Hampden-Sydney College commit Bennett Lloyd, who hit the walk-off home run in the Cadets’ 14-inning, twoday state quarterfinals triumph over Norfolk Christian, 11-10, last spring. “We had depth on depth on depth, I mean we had third-string guys that’d be starting on above-average high school teams in this area,” Anderson said. “I don’t think any school from this area would be able to ever match that.” Anderson and his fellow Cadets went 28-2, repeated as the Deep Run Spring Break tournament champions and bested rival St. Christopher’s for the 2019 Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association state title, 7-4. With this year’s team, Anderson thinks they “would’ve been in the running for sure.” He was the starting pitcher in the Cadets’ 2020 opener versus Walsingham Academy. He said that the Williamsburg-based program is a solid team, and Benedictine won that matchup 9-5 on March 11. “We had a bunch of talent coming back,” Anderson said. “We had some question marks from transfers and sophomores who were on JV last year and what they brought to the table, but we definitely had a talented team for sure and I think we would’ve done pretty good.” But as they were coming back from Walsingham on the bus, the players saw via social media that COVID-19 was spreading throughout the nation. The next day, the NCAA began the process of cancelling its winter and spring sports championships, and the NBA suspended its season. At first school and sports were cancelled

for two weeks. But the pandemic worsened, the number of cases throughout the United States continued to rise and schools in Virginia closed for the remainder of the year, leading to the cancellation of the rest of the VISAA spring sports seasons. With that, Anderson only got to play one regular-season high school game in his senior year. But in that same month, his commitment to Christopher Newport University assured that he’d not only continue his baseball career at the collegiate level, but that he’d get to do so with one of the top NCAA Division III programs in the country. Since 2016, the CNU Captains have gone 130-55 with NCAA tournament appearances in 2018 and 2019. They finished last year’s season ranked No. 15 in the D3baseball.com media poll and No. 16 in the ABCA Top 25. They also concluded the shortened 2020 season with a 10-4 record and six straight wins. “I’ve heard nothing but good things about CNU and its baseball program,” Anderson said. “The coaching staff has been there for a long time and they seem to always be successful and they’ve been doing good things.”
Anderson also likes all of the players in his recruiting class. “It’s going to be really good players and good guys and I like the location, too,” he said. He also feels like CNU is a school on the rise. “I feel like it’s really starting to grow pretty big and I’ll be interested to see what it’s like in the future, too.” Anderson, who played for Benedictine as a pitcher, first baseman and outfielder, is heading to CNU as a two-way player. “ I have a chance to get on the field every single day, and any way I can help the team win is music to my ears,” Anderson said. “Being able to play the game I love every single day means a lot to me. I just want to go in and give 110 percent all the time and do whatever I can do to help the team win and bring a championship back to CNU.” As a fielder and hitter, Anderson brings good pop in his bat, the ability to drive the ball pretty far, an above-average glove, good first-base play and a strong outfielder’s arm to the collegiate diamond. On the mound, he likes to keep his approach simple, focus on the small things, not try to do too much, go
From the time the Class of 2020 Benedictine alum started playing baseball at the age of 9, he always really liked it. His dad really helped him out with the game, and he just kept sticking with it. “I just like that competitiveness of me versus the pitcher, or me versus the hitter,” Anderson said. “That one-on-one feeling – that adrenaline boost you get – there’s nothing like it.” He went to James River his first two years of high school, played varsity there as a freshman and sophomore and then transferred to Benedictine, where he had several friends. Going in, he praised Benedictine’s baseball program, and he really liked the team’s head coach Sean Ryan. “It’s just a great school,” Anderson said of Benedictine. “I just thought it was a better fit for me and I thought that it was where I needed to be and I really enjoyed it.” He started playing with the Cadets his junior year, but missed about 60 percent of his first season after he broke his wrist in their first scrimmage of the year. But he said he played a decent amount towards the end, and he had high praise for his teammates, with whom he won the 2019 VISAA state championship. His favorite memories included that title-clinching win over the rival Saints, that 14-inning classic in the state quarterfinals and a 4-3, 10-inning triumph over Hanover towards the end of the season. He was inspired by the way his teammates worked and carried themselves. “Watching Casey Green warm up was something that really stuck out to me just because of the routine he goes through and how professional he really carried himself out there,” Anderson said. “And the work ethic from Brett Cook was something like I’d never seen before. I’d never really seen anyone work as hard as he did, just the drive he had.” see Anderson> 9

Benedictine’s Dolan commits to Davidson at RB By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
Benedictine football’s Henry Dolan recently announced via social media that he had committed to attending and playing for Davidson College. “I fell in love with Davidson, and they had a lot of confidence in me and I trust them,” Dolan said. “I can’t wait to get down there after we have a senior season.” Last fall, Davidson, which competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), delivered its winningest year (8-4) since its 10-0 run in 2000. The Wildcats are led by head coach Scott Abell, who since his arrival in 2018 has captained the program’s first two winning seasons (including a 6-5 campaign two years ago) since 2007. Dolan pointed to the successes Abell and several of his current coaches also had while they were at Washington & Lee. “What a great program they had there, and they felt as though this place was special and they can definitely turn it around and they already have, and it’s only been two years,” Dolan said. “That says a lot about them and the coaches and how much trust their players have for them to get to this point, and trust is everything.” Academics have always been a big part of Dolan’s life, so with Davidson, its academics and the challenges they offer also attracted him to the school. “And then to have a chance to play football, too, is just a win-win.” He also complimented Davidson’s location – the North Carolina-based college is not too far from home, he said, and it’s also less than 30 minutes driving from the major hub of Charlotte. For Dolan, that’s a good resource, especially when he gets older and starts looking for internships and jobs. And of course, there’s the chance to play Division I football. “It’s just a great opportunity to play against DI talent,” he said.
Anderson continued from >8 Coach Ryan, Anderson added, does a really good job of keeping you calm and helping you with the mechanics of the game. “If you’re struggling with some-
He is getting recruited to Davidson as a running back, and the Wildcats, which employ the shotgun triple-option offense, “run the ball a ton,” Dolan said. The 5-foot8, 165-pound rising senior at Benedictine is looking to bring both his quickness and toughness to the Wildcats’ backfield. “I’m not the biggest kid, I’ve always known that, but it’s going to take a couple people to bring me down,” he said.” That’s always been my mentality: just never go down.” And when he’s going against bigger players, the thought of them underestimating Dolan because of his size gives him an extra boost as far as his mindset. That’s always been part of how he runs the ball. “I’ll never back down from a challenge,” Dolan said. “And if he still thinks he can beat me up pretty good, it’s not going to come that easy. I’ll give it my all.” And with the Wildcats running the ball like they do – Davidson last year ranked second out of FCS teams in the country in team rushing yards per game (322.6) – Dolan can’t wait to be a part of that. His versatility was a key factor in the Benedictine Cadets battling through a season dogged by injuries to win the 2019 VISAA state championship. Playing at running back and strong safety, Dolan led the Cadets’ title-winning team in rushing yards (1,003 on 200 carries), touchdowns scored (12 rushing) and interceptions on defense (five) as a junior. He also made 38 tackles (four for loss), caught five passes for 50 yards and even stepped into the role of quarterback during parts of the season, with most of his snaps behind center coming during Benedictine’s wins over Collegiate (27-14) and Woodberry Forest (27-26). When he was a sophomore, Dolan said he “was kind of a Swiss Army knife” in that he played at several different positions on the varsity team. That experience of playing and learning those different positions helped him get to where he is today. His 2019 postseason honors includ-

ed being named to the Richmond TimesDispatch All-Metro First Team for defense (defensive back) and to VISAA’s Division I All-State Second Team for offense (running back). He also didn’t miss a game in 2019, playing in all 11 varsity contests. “It’s a long season, I knew we had a couple injuries as a team that – it didn’t step us back but we all had to kind of step up, and I feel like that was part of my role, too. I had to step up and I knew I had to be healthy,” he said. “Just being hard-headed and tough, I think that really just gets me through the season.” As for the state championship season, Dolan said “it just kind of came together in a good way.” “Everyone had to step up, not just me,” he

said. “We’re like: ‘All right . . . we’re making it to the playoffs. There’s no other choice.’ We got some key guys back at good times, but I think my performance just came with the help of my teammates and the coaches just believing in us and believing in me.” While it’s still unknown how this upcoming football season will go and when it will start due to the ongoing situation with COVID-19, Dolan is continuing to prepare for his senior year with the mindset that everything will start on time. During this pandemic, he’s been lifting at least four days a week, working with his speed trainer Kenny Younger over the weekends and doing some of his own footwork and conditioning. “I’m trying to do something every day,” he said. As he and his Benedictine teammates set their sights on repeating as state champions, Dolan feels they have a special group of guys coming back. “I love all the guys in my grade and in the grades below,” Dolan said.“I think our senior class is pretty special.” In between now and the fall of 2021 – when he becomes a Wildcat – Dolan is looking to build up his overall confidence with his senior season on the gridiron. “And just having any impact I can on that team, going as a first-year, would be incredible, especially with them being on the rise and already having lots of talent down there,” Dolan said of Davidson. “Just me doing the best I can to get on the field and maybe contribute first year would be great.” When it comes to the Cadets, Dolan feels that the small things – being in the locker room, being with his friends – are the kinds of things he’ll never forget. “At Benedictine, being part of the football team, it’s an honor,” Dolan said. “With Coach [Greg] Lilly leading the charge, it’s always been an honor to be on the team and I’m just grateful to have chosen Benedictine, and football’s been a big part of me there. “Winning games is fun, too,” he added, “and I hope we can do more of that this fall.”
myself in a more professional manner – and just keep plugging and keep playing, no matter how bad things get.” One of the life lessons Anderson has taken away from baseball is that you can fail a lot of times and still be really successful. “You’re a baseball player and you
get out 60 percent of the time, you’re hitting .400 . . . you’re doing pretty good,” Anderson said. “Baseball really just helps you just keep battling and learning from failures and keep getting after it, just keep your head high. You’ve just got to keep fighting back and learn from your mistakes.”
