Byrd Elementary’s Lead Custodian ‘Mr. Frank’ has earned reputation for going above and beyond
Contributed report
Since July 1, Goochland County Government has been operating according to Phase Three of the county’s Transitional Operations Plan. As such, county government offices and facilities are open to the public during the business hours of 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., and all patrons are required to follow prescribed social distancing practices. All patrons aged ten and over entering all county buildings are required to wear a facial covering over their nose and mouth, although Goochland County will honor the five identified face covering exceptions for patrons and staff. Children over the age of two are strongly encouraged, but not required, to wear a facial covering. Those who do not have a face covering are encouraged to request one from the department or office they will be visiting, see Phase Three > 3

Byrd Elementary School Lead Custodian Frank Eldridge knew when he took on his current position that he was filling some big shoes. After all, the late Connie Brice, who previously held the job and served as a mentor to Eldridge and so many others, had been a beloved figure at the school for years. Fortunately, Eldridge quickly put to rest any doubt that he was up to the task. Known affectionately as “Mr. Frank” around the school, Eldridge immediately distinguished himself as a dedicated

Need a lift? On Friday, July 10, Goochland’s Alvis Family Farms will kick off the second annual Sunflower Festival, offering visitors the chance to enjoy acre upon acre of bright yellow blooms stretching as far as the eye can see. According to organizers, this year’s festival will look a little different due to a number of COVID-19 precautions, though the spectacular views and plenty of sunflower-related attractions will remain in full effect. Attendees will enjoy
a sunflower maze, delicious food and drinks, offerings from area vendors and even a new Pick Your Own Patch. There will also be plenty of photo opportunities and even sunflowers pre-cut to purchase and bring home. As they did last year, Alvis Farm will be donating a portion of the proceeds back to various Goochland community groups

aged to call in advance and schedule telephone appointments with departments and agencies. For citizens’ convenience, a centralized drop box is located on the Sandy Hook Road (Rt. 522) side of the Administration Building, near the front corner of the building near the fountain. A silver “envelope depository” drop box for the Treasurer’s Office is built into the brick wall further down the side of the building near the Registrar’s Office door if you need to drop off tax payments. way, said Byrd Elementary principal James Hopkins. “Mr. Frank goes above and beyond to make sure that the teachers have what they need, and he makes sure that the school is always pristine,” Hopkins said, noting that Eldridge’s efforts even extend to picking up litter out in front of the school. To teacher Heather Wilckens, Eldridge has been a true gift to the school community. “Mr. Frank is one the most caring, giving and thoughtful people I have ever met,” Wilckens said. “He starts every day with words of encouragement and positivity. I feel blessed to call him friend and to have had him as a coworker. Staff and students in Goochland are blessed to have him as a member of our family.” These days Eldridge and his fellow custodians are hard at work making sure that the school buildings are ready for the students’ planned return
in August. Eldridge said they were able to get ahead on the cleaning and sanitizing due to schools being closed, but explained that there is still plenty of work that needs to be done so that social distancing requirements can be maintained. Eldridge said he is hoping the schools are able to open on time, “for the kids’ sake.” Knowing what kind of a learning environment Byrd provides, he said, he wants to see them come back as soon as possible. Of course, there are plenty of people who will be glad to see Eldridge again as well — both students and parents alike. “He is always there for our community and always goes the extra mile over and over,” said former PTA president Nicole Melton, who has known Eldridge for years. “He is one of the best role models for how to be a good person, not only for the kids but for the adults as well.”

Wedding planner hoping for brighter days ahead As she readies to open venue, Kim Moody has held on to sunny outlook despite uncertainty By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Like so many millions of others, Kim Moody has been grappling for months with the impact of COVID-19, trying her best to stay positive and keep her family safe. In her case, however, the virus has hit particularly hard: in addition having to homeschool her two young children, Moody — who has made her career as a successful wedding and events planner, and also owns two retail shops in Blackstone and Richmond — was suddenly faced with the significant impact of the coronavirus
pandemic on both the wedding and retail industries. Add to that the fact that the couple had recently become partners in The Estate at River Run, a palatial wedding and events venue located on River Road, and Moody could have been forgiven for feeling as if the entire world was crumbling. Fortunately, even during the most challenging times, Moody tends to look on the bright side of things. “It could be worse,” she said cheerfully several weeks ago, even before restrictions — which had effectively doomed any wedding or event that had been scheduled from the months of March through September — had begun to loosen. Everyone in her family was healthy, she said, “so we’ll take the good with the bad.” In actuality, she explained, the couple had already been planning to use the late spring and early summer months to complete the conversion of
the property from a home to a wedding venue. They have also been able to host small “elopement”-style events on the property. Still, even the rosiest outlook can’t mask the fact that Moody, like so many others, is looking forward to the days when all restrictions are a thing of the past. They know the broken supply chains and other casualties of a monthslong world-wide crisis won’t be repaired overnight, but the sooner they can begin planning again the better. “Everybody is in disbelief that this is still happening,” Moody said of the other wedding industry professionals she has spoken with. “A lot of the general public is still scared… the rest of us are all really, really ready to get back to work.” September and October are traditionally the busiest wedding months of the year, and it remains to be seen what will and won’t be allowed in terms of gatherings.

When deal seems too good, trust your gut COVID-19 could be gaining on Virginians By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Call it the ultimate summer bummer. It happened several weeks ago to a good friend, a hard-working mom who was desperate for a minivacation after spending the past few months juggling homeschooling with everything else on her already full plate. She was thrilled when she spotted a great deal on a vacation rental out of state, a place that wouldn’t require air travel to reach but was still far enough away to feel like a true getaway. She could practically feel her stress beginning to ebb as she scrolled through the photos of the place online. It wasn’t until she went to pay
the rental fee — and the hefty deposit — that the plan started to unravel. Uneasy about the fact that the person renting the property would accept only certain types of payment, my friend did some digging. It wasn’t long before she realized that the listing wasn’t real, and that she’d nearly become the latest victim of a popular scam that consistently fleeces would-be vacationers. My friend, of course, was fortunate she didn’t get taken. But with the summer months upon us and plenty of people eager to finally get out and enjoy themselves again, there will undoubtedly be those who find themselves targeted by scam artists. Some cons, of course, are more dangerous than others. Ever found
yourself hustled out of $20 in a parking lot thanks to a person who said they needed exactly that amount for a locksmith after supposedly locking their keys in their car? I have. That lesson cost only $20 to learn, but others can be far more damaging. Every year there are warnings where I live about fly-by-night driveway pavers, and contractors who will offer to do work for very reasonable prices then pocket the money and never finish the job. These days, with the rise of websites like Craigslist and Fiverr, there are literally thousands and thousands of people offering goods and services people might need. I’m sure many of them are totally legitimate, but how do you pick the truly honorable freelance photographer
or housepainter from the one who won’t deliver anything more than a migraine and a hit to your bank balance? The truth is, you can’t always be 100 percent certain. You can, however, ask those you hire to provide references and documentation that they are running a legitimate business. You can make sure you see the property you are renting in person before turning over any funds, or at least check with a local real estate agent to make sure the listing is legit. Finally, of course, you can trust your gut. If a deal looks too good to be true, it almost always is. Don’t ignore the little voice in your head telling you something just doesn’t seem right. In the end, it might just save your summer — and your savings.
Looking back: Arena was once the place to be By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
As we rode down Arthur Ashe Boulevard, it was hard not to notice the obvious contrast presented by this year’s Fourth of July opposed to others. The usually busy avenue was nearly deserted, and the normal hustle and bustle surrounding the Diamond was
hauntingly missing. As crews prepared to present a remote fashion of what has become a Richmond tradition, Fourth of July fireworks at the Diamond, the ticket booths were deserted and the large parking lot adjacent sat empty. As we rode past and headed home, my eye wandered to a space behind the Diamond that now

I thought of an image of that same area from a time many decades ago, before the constant hum of the interstate traffic or intermittent bus arrivals made their mark on the area. Before there was a Robbins

Going into June, the United States as a whole seemed to be making progress slowing the spread of COVID-19. Heading out of June, those who prefer to avoid bad news should probably follow a modified version of baseball legend Satchel Paige’s most famous bit of advice: Don’t look back. COVID might be gaining on you. During the period where much of the nation was locked down, the U.S. was making progress in slowing the spread of the disease. The positivity rate – a statistic calculated by dividing the number of positive test reports by the total number of tests whose results were reported in a given day – had dropped from a high (based on a seven-day running average) of more than 21% to a low of 4.5% between June 9 and June 12. But, as many public health experts feared, the premature opening of many state economies, accompanied by inadequate testing and contact-tracing efforts and lackluster public adherence to infection prevention recommendations such as wearing face masks in public, has led to a resurgence of the disease in many parts of the country. In a little more than two weeks, the positivity rate has increased to more than 6.9% as of the time I write this column. Because of the lockdown Virginia has been making some progress on that front. The commonwealth’s positivity rate decreased from a high well above 20% in mid-April to a bit below 5% now. It took time for Virginia see COVID-19 > page 7

Now, my memories of that area are faded, but names like Moore’s Speedway and the Richmond Stockyards remain in my earliest recollections of the city. It was a time in Richmond when high school football was played at both City Stadium and Parker Field, and high school basketball was played at The Arena. For many years, the unheated and non-climate controlled Arena served as the home of University of Richmond bas-
ketball games. It was the venue for any big indoor sporting event, including boxing and wrestling matches. Built in 1904, Richmond’s arena was designed as an exhibition hall for the Virginia State Fair, which held its annual gathering on those grounds until World War II. The Army used the facility for vehicle storage during the war and the city obtained the property when the conflict ended. At the time, there wasn’t a venue in the city that could seat more than 2,000 spectators, so University of Richmond began calling it home for its basketball games. And most won’t remember

On the other hand, I see quite a few people ignoring the requirement to wear face masks, especially in enclosed spaces. That may very well undermine the progress the state has made so far. I hope I am wrong, but I doubt I will be. The COVID19 virus cares little about any individual’s notion of “freedom.” No matter what your political persuasion, if you give the virus an opening, there is a good chance it will make you wish you were dead – if not speed you to a premature demise. Some of you are still not worried. It’s just like the flu, you say. I hate to disabuse you of that notion. Both kale and collards can be started anytime in June until six weeks before the first frost. In our region, the first frost is generally the third or fourth week in October. Kale and collard seeds prefer to be sown directly into the ground but can be grown in deep containers. If sown in the ground, the seeds should be planted ½ inch deep. Kale and collards prefer a pH above 5.5. When the seedlings emerge, thin them periodically as they shouldn’t be overcrowded. Starting now in the heat of summer to grow kale and collards can be challenging. The soil moisture should be kept constant until

Bennett Lloyd’s Benedictine baseball journey By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
Bennett Lloyd really got into baseball when he saw his brother playing the game. “Being little,” he said, “you always want to be like your big brother.” He started playing when he was around 6 years old, and he hasn’t stopped since. The Benedictine alum and rising freshman at Hampden-Sydney College played up through the Tuckahoe Little League and competed for the Manakin Militia in Goochland, the Richmond Braves, RBA South and RBA West. Throughout his career and his life, his travel coach Donnie Phillips has been both a mentor and teacher. He helped Lloyd pick which college he’d attend and play for, and he also helped with getting scouts to come and watch him play. Lloyd’s achievements leading up to high school included contributing to the TLL 12u American All-Star team that went down to Warner Robins, Georgia, to play in the Southeast Regional Tournament. “That was probably my first big baseball moment where we were playing on ESPN,” Lloyd said. “That was a big moment for me.” He also still talks to the guys who were his teammates. “I made lifelong friends during that.” In his high school freshman year, Lloyd was among the players who ended up making Benedictine’s varsity team. “It was kind of a shock for all of us making it,” he said, “because our team that year was really good.” During his freshman and sophomore seasons, Lloyd’s role was mostly that of a relief pitcher. But he wanted to become a regular

part of the batting order, and he did so by becoming a smarter hitter in addition to already being a strong hitter. “I really started coming in with the mindset of: no matter what, swing, so I was just always thinking: yes, yes, yes, and then last second ... that would be like my final deciding factor if I’m swinging or not,” Lloyd said. “I don’t know
how, but it really did just help me actually start getting my swing started and actually getting ready to hit the ball before I just went up there.” And also, before his at-bat, he would think about his plan – what he wanted to do during certain counts. That led to the versatile 6-foot-2 right-hander becoming a top contributor in the Cadets’
explosive lineup. As a junior, Lloyd hit three home runs and four doubles and scored 24 runs. He finished second on the team in RBI (27) behind Brett Cook in 2019. “We always knew Bennett would be an impact player,” said Benedictine coach Sean Ryan. “What’s most impressive is the way he see Lloyd> 10

Lloyd continued from >9 accepted whatever role he was given, whether it be to pitch a couple of relief innings in a tight game, play the outfield when needed or come up clutch at the plate. He did a little of everything for us and became one of our most versatile and valuable players.” He also delivered one of the most memorable moments in Benedictine’s storied history. The Cadets ran into Norfolk Christian School in this past year’s VISAA state quarterfinals, and the two teams ended up battling each other across 14 innings – two regulation games’ worth – and two days of play. Lloyd stepped up with the score tied at 10-10, and when he skied a 1-0 fastball over left-center field, he thought for sure it was going to fall into a fielder’s glove. It didn’t. The ball kept going until it exited the field across the fence, securing Lloyd’s wild walk-off home run and a thrilling 11-10 playoff triumph for his Cadets. “It surprised me,” he said. It was the first walk-off homer he had ever hit in any kind of situation. “When that happened, I went blank . . . and then afterwards I thought about it and it’s probably one of the best feelings I’ve had,” Lloyd said. “I’ve never done anything like that, so being able to do something like that in such a big moment really did impact me a lot.” “Bennett’s game-winning homer against Norfolk Christian will go down as one of the biggest hits in Benedictine baseball history,” Ryan said. “It’s a memory no one who was a part of that game will ever forget.” Lloyd and his teammates would go on to hoist the 2019 VISAA state championship trophy with a 7-4 victory over rival St. Christopher’s. Lloyd came up huge in that game as well; he tallied up three RBI, including the tie-breaking run in the sixth inning to put the Cadets up 5-4. “His junior year, we asked a lot of him. His relentless work ethic paid off, particularly at the plate, and he became a vital piece of our lineup,” Ryan said of Lloyd. “He quietly put up

incredible numbers, and we wouldn’t have won that state title without him.” Lloyd said that Benedictine’s baseball program is really “a family.” “You get a little closer with the guys because most of the guys just play baseball or just play one sport, and most of us lift at the same place, so being able to be with those guys 24/7 in school, lifting, practice – you just get to know them so well that the team chemistry is a little different because you know each other,” Lloyd said. “I think the atmosphere with Benedictine baseball was a little different than most places and I think a stronger team chemistry all four years kind of helped more.” Playing at first base, Lloyd got to learn from Will Simon, and the first things Simon taught him were the way to go through the bag, where to set up and where to put his feet. “When I got there, he really just cleaned everything up for me and actually showed me what to do and showed me the simple things and the things that will help me when I’m over there, and that really did help me, and I used just about everything he has taught me still,” Lloyd said. He added that coach Ryan emphasized to the players the central significance of character, and Cam Cassady, a former assistant coach at Benedictine who’s now currently on the Roanoke baseball coaching staff, also helped them with becoming better baseball players. “During study hall, during school, you would walk into his room and every single baseball kid was in there. He would just be talking about baseball,” Lloyd said of Cassady. “He showed us how to work hard and why we should love baseball and how much fun it is.” Lloyd also said that, during his sophomore year, coach Cassady “sat me down and gave me a reality check.” “He pointed out my problems and continuously pushed me to get better and better at them,” he said. “He wanted the best for all of us and more.” Growing up, Lloyd had always been a first baseman and a pitcher, but his junior year, he added outfielder to his list of roles on the team – and he got pretty good at it.
this year he topped at 87. One of his favorite high school baseball moments came from when they played St. Christopher’s in the Deep Run Spring Break Tournament his sophomore season. Lloyd, on the pitcher’s mound, faced Nick Biddison, now a sophomore and baseball player at Virginia Tech. Lloyd struck him out with three straight fastballs. “I surprised myself,” Lloyd said. “I think I surprised him too.”
Looking ahead File/Goochland Gazette
Bennett Lloyd throws a pitch in a 2020 preseason scrimmage.
“It was hard, honestly,” Lloyd said of adjusting to that new role. “It was completely different from anything I had ever been taught, and trying to pick that up super quickly was really demanding of me, having to always put forth the effort into tracking different balls, getting live reads off of bats and everything.” After playing in the outfield, Lloyd said he has a lot more respect for other positions. “Once I switched . . . I was like: man, this is a completely different game playing out here,” he said. “I think it just really opened up my eyes to how difficult the game of baseball is.” When Lloyd joins HampdenSydney’s baseball team this coming fall, he will do so as a two-way player. “It’s very exciting knowing that they actually believe that I can pitch and hit at the college level.” Lloyd likes complete control of the game, and the most control you can get, he said, is as a pitcher. “It’s nice being able to control what is going to happen in the game,” Lloyd said, “and no matter what, if you still execute your pitch and you still throw your pitch and somebody hits it, you can’t be upset about it . . . you did your job.” His fastball and curveball have been the two strongest pitches in his arsenal, and he has a cutter that is kind of like a “get me over” pitch that he can throw for a strike. His velocity usually sits around 84-85 mph, and
Going into his senior season, Lloyd really was worried. While he and his Cadets were coming off last year’s state championship season, they had lost many contributors from that stellar season to graduation and transfers, and a couple more were sidelined by injury. “I was really, really concerned as to how our team would be without them,” Lloyd said. “But after probably the first two to three practices, that worry went away.” He observed how the connection between his teammates this year was especially strong. “It was just weird – being able to have a team of: nobody was arguing, there’s no problems,” he said. “Everybody was just always excited to go out onto the field and play with each other.” The Cadets showcased their chemistry through one game this season – a 9-5 triumph over Walsingham Academy. But then came the nationwide response to the COVID-19 pandemic that gripped the nation. Schools in the state were shuttered for the rest of the year, and the rest of the VISAA spring sports seasons were cancelled. “Originally right when it happened, I was just sad. I was just so mad that I didn’t get to play my senior season,” he said. “And then I really started thinking about it, and I was sitting there like: ‘Okay, this could be helpful. It could help with my injuries and just get me a little healthier.’ “But then it kind of just sucks seeing the seniors who haven’t committed not being able to get that last chance to show what they can do,” he said, “and that’s one big thing that

www.goochlandgazette.com I think can be hard, especially for some of my friends that wanted to play in college but hadn’t committed yet or were going to, and just couldn’t because of this whole break.” The pandemic has shown him that “something really can be taken from you that quickly, in a blink of an eye.” “Realizing that and still to be able to sit here and give it time and let it process I think really just was what showed me: Hey, it can’t be but so bad.” With Hampden-Sydney College – his next stop in both his academic and baseball careers – Lloyd likes that it’s a smaller school. “I feel like, also, the coaches there, just the way they talk to me, it feels like they actually care about me and not just my abilities,” he said, “and that’s one thing that I was always looking for, because I want to go somewhere that the coaches actually like me and I’ll actually play, because I don’t want to go to some school where I’m just going to go sit on the bench for four years and barely play. I want to go somewhere where I can go and hopefully start playing my freshman year.” He spoke highly of the other commits coming in next season. “They’re just really laid-back guys who actually are accepting and would actually help you out,” he said, “and I have a good amount of friends that are going up there next year for baseball, so I won’t be by myself.” During this time, Lloyd has been working in landscaping – which, he noted, works a lot of different muscles – and he’s also been lifting a lot. “I’m just trying to get a lot stronger and be able to build up some arm strength before I go up there.” He continues the next leg of his baseball and academic journeys having learned from the diamond that “no matter what, it shouldn’t matter about size, doesn’t matter about strength – doesn’t matter about any of that.” What matters, he said, is character, as well as how much – how badly – you want your goal. “If you don’t want it that bad, you’re not going to do it,” he said. “If you actually care about it, you’re going to work for it.”

ers. “Our best estimate right now is that for every case that was reported, there actually are 10 more infections.” If Redfield is right that the number of actual infections is about 10 times greater than known, that would produce a case fatality ratio of 0.5%. That is still pretty bad. But we do not need to rely upon guesstimates of the pandemic’s total impact to get a handle on how bad it actually is. We know how many deaths have been reported so far – keeping in mind that that, too, may be an undercount – and divide that number by the total U.S. population to get something called the crude

Because of the inadequate U.S. testing effort from the start, we don’t know how many people have actually been infected with the virus . . . Thursday, Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Protection, gave an indication on how far off our current assessment of the disease is. “It’s clear that many individuals in this nation are still susceptible,” he said on a conference call with reportTUESDAY EVENING 4 PM 4:30 (4)

mortality rate. The crude mortality rate allows us to compare COVID19 with other causes of death in the nation to get a reasonably solid handle on how bad it is. In 2017, the crude mortality rate from all causes of death in the U.S. was 871 per 100,000. The top 10 causes of death that year were 1) heart disease: 200 per 100,000; 2) cancer: 186; 3) accidents: 53; 4) chronic lower respiratory disease: 50; 5) cerebrovascular disease: 45; 6) Alzheimer disease: 38; 7) diabetes (all types): 26; 8) influenza and pneumonia: 17; 9) kidney disease: 16; and 10) suicide: 15.

nation’s top science writers, put it: “[The crude mortality rate] doesn’t take into account the medical costs or loss of healthy lifespan due to lasting heart or kidney or lung damage or . . . diabetes in survivors of severe cases, nor the suffering in those who grapple for more than a month with severe exhaustion. Those effects will all be on top of mortality.” To everyone in a rush to get back to the life they had before this pandemic, I can only paraphrase Bette Davis: Fasten your seatbelts. If the COVID-19 outbreak was happening in 2017, it would already be No. 6 on the list, with it likely leapfrogging cerebrovascular diseases into the five-spot in a matter of weeks – and likely finish the year as the No. 3 killer of Americans. We probably will not know how COVID-19 ranks among the top 10 killers of Americans until 2022 at the earliest, but I am certain it will finish in the top five if not the top three – barring some other unmitigated disaster. Lest you think the mortality data is bad, consider the effects on the survivors. As Dan Ferber, one of the

Around the world: A staycation menu with international flair
S
taycations can be perfect ways to rest and recharge without having to travel far from home. Staycations tend to be affordable ways to spend time together for those who perhaps do not have the budget to travel domestically or internationally, or those who simply prefer the convenience of remaining nearby. A break from meal planning and preparation is part of the allure of traditional vacations. But just because you’re choosing a staycation does not mean that you need to forgo the respite from cooking nightly meals. In fact, staycations can be ideal times to explore the various dining opportunities your local community offers, even providing a way to “tour the world” through global cuisine. Many small towns and cities boast various types of restaurants offering a wide array of foods from countries around the world. The following are tips for maximizing your staycation dining
experience. Utilize technology. Let technology work for you when looking for restaurants. While a simple Google search will yield plenty of results, the app LocalEats can narrow down options to restaurants touted by foodies who prefer local businesses rather than chain restaurants. Rely on other apps for recommendations on places to dine, such as Yelp, Foursquare, OpenTable, LocalEats, and Zagat. Plot your map. Make a list of the types of cuisines you want to sample based on regions of the world and match them to nearby recommended restaurants. Your culinary tour can be narrowed down to a specific geographical region, such as Germany, or broadened depending on the restaurants in the area. Learn about the culture. Do a little research into what comprises the menu of certain cultures so that you can select truly traditional dishes rather than Americanized
versions. This brief history lesson also may offer insight into particular traditions behind food preparation methods. Use their expertise. Ask the chef or restaurant staff to make their recommendations on what you should try for authentic dishes. Many restaurants are anxious to share information and put together a tasting menu, even if it isn’t on the main menu. Support local businesses. An added benefit of this hometown global cuisine tour is that you will be keeping money in the community by supporting local businesses. Encourage others to do their own restaurant tours by recommending certain establishments and sharing positive experiences on social media. Dining out is a key component of vacations and travel. Staycations also can incorporate a tour of culinary delights without having to stray far from home. — MetroCreative

Helpful tips to enjoy safe backyard barbecues this summer
B
ackyard barbecues are synonymous with warm weather. And why wouldn’t they be? Grilling over an open flame when the weather is warm embodies the
relaxing spirit of spring and summer, prompting many people to leave their oven ranges behind in favor of charcoal and gas grills. The following are some steps people can take to ensure
their barbecues are safe. Recognize that gas grills pose a threat as well. It’s easy to assume gas grills don’t pose as great a threat as charcoal grills, which produce soaring flames once the charcoal is lit. But the
NFPA notes that gas grills are involved in 7,900 home fires per year. Only use grills outdoors. Grills should never be used indoors. Even if rain unexpectedly arrives during a backyard
barbecue, keep the grill outside. If unexpected rain is accompanied by lightning and thunder, extinguish the fire in the grill and go indoors. Place the grill in a safe location. Grills should be placed
well away from the home. Avoid locating grills near deck railings or beneath eaves and overhanging branches. Cut overgrown branches before lighting a grill fire if they are in close proximity to the grill.
