On July 7, Goochland’s Board of Supervisors approved Salem Baptist Church’s request to install an electronic message sign in front of the church at 465 Broad Street Road, the first such sign ever allowed in the county (an existing sign at Reynolds Community College is located on state property, and is thereby exempt from county regulations). “Congratulations,” said board chair Susan Lascolette upon the board’s unanimous vote in support of the request, which was approved in June by the Planning Commission. GCPS honored for workforce readiness initiative Contributed report

Goochland County Public Schools has been named among the nine school divisions that recently received honors in the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Excellence in Workforce Readiness Awards. Winning divisions were recognized at a virtual awards ceremony. The

Signs continued from >1 often remained wary of them due to fears that they create distractions for drivers and headaches for residents living nearby. And while they are now allowed in Goochland with a Conditional Use Permit under the county’s recently revamped zoning ordinance, they are still heavily regulated. According to current regulations, the message featured on signs cannot change more than once every minute, and twosided signs must have the same message displayed on both sides. Transitions between messages can be only a black screen, and the signs must be turned off between 11 p.m. and dawn. Of particular note is the rate at which a sign’s message can change, which varies widely from county to county. In Hanover, for example, sign messages can change every 10 seconds, while in Powhatan the rate is capped at three minutes. New Kent County, still doesn’t allow electronic signs at all. Salem Baptist Church leaders had initially asked in their CUP application for permission to change their sign’s message every five seconds (much like a sign in front of a nearby church in Louisa) and to leave it on for 24 hours a day. The Planning Commission in June had recommended approval of the CUP, but denied both those additional requests. Addressing the board, Salem

VSBA President Rodney Jordan. “Congratulations to the school divisions recognized for their hard work.” Goochland took second place out of those schools with student populations below 5,000 students for its Business and Education Roundtables. The Virginia School Boards Association, a voluntary,

nonpartisan organization of Virginia school boards, promotes excellence in public education through advocacy, training, and services. The Association offers conferences, information, training, and counseling designed to meet the needs of the Commonwealth’s educational leaders.

Baptist Church pastor Zach Zbinden said the church was more than willing to change the message only every 15 seconds, a rate county planning officials said would help minimize driver distraction. He also confirmed that the church no longer wanted to leave the sign on for 24 hours, a change made out of respect for those living near the church. While the signs have been something of a sticky wicket

over the years, Salem Baptist’s plan appeared to enjoy support from both board members and residents, including Wendy Hobbs of Jerusalem Baptist Church, located just up the road from where the new sign will stand. “This is a first for Goochland, and we fully support them,” Hobbs said. Now more than ever, local youth will need community’s support By Roslyn Ryan Editorial

B

y the time the Goochland County School Division’s reopening plan was announced several weeks ago, most families had undoubtedly already come to terms with the fact that nothing about the 2020-2021 school year will be “typical.” As in so many other localities across the country, there would be no high school football or marching band, none of the joyful cacophony and camaraderie that typically come with the first days back to school (or at least much less of it). Of course, it’s one thing to pine for the treasured rituals that have always gone along with back-to-school time, but quite another to consider exactly what the loss of so much in-person instructional time will mean for students. To be clear, it’s undeniable that local school leaders are stuck between the proverbial rock and hard place in attempting to find a balance between keeping students and staff safe and making sure they fulfill the division’s mission of providing county students with a first-rate education. Right now, the path forward only allows for each student who wants to

return to class to have two instructional days per week. And for our county’s young people — all of whom require a certain amount of structure, socialization and discipline in order to reach their full potential — it is certainly a terrible blow. If you have ever heard it said that it takes a village to raise a child, perhaps that is going to be true in the coming weeks and months more than ever. What that exactly looks like in these strange times, I’m not quite sure. But I do know our young people are going to require guidance, and patience, and many eyes watching to make sure they are staying on the right path. Now is the time to make sure that we are there to support them, to give them time to adjust and space to mourn what has been taken from them, but also to help them understand that so often challenges bring with them opportunities too — you just have to be willing to look for them. As the start of the school year draws closer, young people are going to need the rest of us to model what resiliency looks like. Certainly, backing down from a challenge has never been an American value. And in this strange new world of ours, that’s at least one thing that hasn’t changed.

Placed in separate incubators after both didn’t measure up weight-wise, the connection continued even with the plastic-walled obstacles dividing them, and we’d often notice the two just staring at each other through the obstruction. A simple movement by Jack would evoke a similar reaction by Emma. When one cried, the other teared up shortly thereafter. That almost magical connection has strengthened with each passing year, and the power of a mystical bonding is hard to understand for those not acquainted with twins. But, parents of uni-birth siblings know and respect the phenomena and have learned to accept what can’t be scientifically explained. While I have no idea how or why this connection evolves or what causes it, I can affirm it does exist. After you witness it daily, there’s little subtlety or doubt regarding its reality. 2020 State Fair of Virginia canceled due to COVID-19 Contributed Report

DOSWELL – The Virginia Farm Bureau board of directors announced on July 23 the decision to cancel the 2020 State Fair of Virginia, and instead hold a modified State Fair 4-H Livestock Show. The traditional fair that was scheduled for Sept. 25 through Oct. 4 will not take place due to complications associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. “This was a difficult decision, but safety is our number one priority,” said Marlene Jolliffe, the fair’s executive director. “We’ve spent months developing plans and scenarios that would allow us to still host the fair this year, but with the ever-changing, unpredictable COVID-19 situation, we just couldn’t make it work.” The State Fair of Virginia is an annual event that nurtures, preserves and celebrates the best of Virginia’s past, present and future through scholarship initiatives, creative pro-

That similarity allows them to react to situations with the same reactions. Having the same DNA could provide answers to the mystery. But my twins are different. They are fraternal and evolved from two separate eggs and have similar, but different, DNA. But, that almost telepathic connection that Jack and Emma enjoy is clearly evident, something I suspect began more than 16 years as they fought for space pre-birth. The complexity of the event requires thousands of hours of planning by staff, partners and vendors; planning typically begins many months before the fair’s opening day. “In a normal year, preparing for this annual event is a huge undertaking. In the midst of a global pandemic, it just wasn’t feasible,” Jolliffe noted. Agriculture and youth are the foundation of the fair’s mission, “so our first priority was to find a way to honor our youth and allow them to be recognized for their dedication and hard work,” noted VFBF President Wayne F. Pryor. “While a modified State Fair 4-H Livestock Show is not ideal, we believe it will allow our youth to showcase the yearlong effort they’ve put into raising their animals, and

enable them to earn scholarship money as well.” Pryor said every precaution will be taken to keep participants safe during the event. State fair staff are working with Virginia Cooperative Extension employees to finalize plans for the livestock show, and those details will be announced at a later date. The state fair has been held each fall since 2009 at its permanent home at the 330acre Meadow Event Park in Caroline County. The event was established in 1854, and was not held in 1918 due to the Spanish influenza pandemic. “While our hearts are heavy, we believe this is the right thing to do,” Jolliffe said. “It is important that we are good stewards of our operation and consider the health and welfare of our communities. “We are thankful for the thousands who make this magical event come to life

Compassionate and giving, her heart is open and her motives pure and sincere. As she witnesses the progression of Jack’s Muscular Dystrophy, she remains undeterred in her efforts to assist and ensure his life is full and unobstructed. Jack is neat and precise, his mathematically-inclined mind focused and deliberate. While Emma’s style could be described as a crossfire hurricane, Jack’s way of doing things relies on rhyme and reason. It’s the difference between folded clothes placed neatly on a bed and those lost in an evergrowing pile on the floor. They ignore and accept

the differences, and they have developed a sense of trust that is complexing to those who don’t understand their special relationship. But for me, it’s been 16 years of enlightenment, almost constant entertainment and an enlightenment for which I am thankful daily — a gift that indeed never stops giving. I don’t seek answers on why Jack and Emma are the way they are, only thanking my lucky stars I’m close enough to enjoy it. Years ago, we learned as a family to live each day, to enjoy the moment and not question what might lie ahead. Jack and Emma exemplify that philosophy each day, and remind us that joy in our lives comes in moments. Happy Birthday, Jack and Emma.

Stratton reflects on rare feat from 2019 season By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

It was Goochland’s second game of the 2019 season. Buckingham lined up for the field goal in the first overtime, looking to break a 7-7 tie. The ball was snapped, and the kicker ran to the ball. His field goal attempt never had a chance. Will Stratton came around the edge and blocked the Knights’ kick. “If I hadn’t blocked that,” he said, “they would’ve won.” Goochland went on to win that game 13-7. Blocking one kick is a notable achievement. Stratton did it seven times that year. “That’s the kind of stuff you dream about,” Stratton said. “You never actually notice that it can happen until it does.” And being able to do something like that really helped him. “It made my life a lot better, knowing that I could do something to achieve that much of greatness,” Stratton said. During those special teams plays, the 6-foot-2, 165-pound linebacker would normally line up on the outside – “the very outside of the last man on the line,” he said – and he would either take a step out and run under the outside of the back line, or he would take a step out and then cut back in if his opponents started to figure it out “just to keep them offbalance.” Once he and his team saw it could happen once, they all started putting in their part, Stratton said. “And it started happening over and over again.” Blocking seven kicks in a season, he said, came down to

continuous reps in practice. “We worked on it and we worked on it and we worked on it, and it started coming to us, and everybody did their part,” Stratton said. “It’s not just me – we all had to do our part and hit the right spots

for me to come around the edge.” It also came down to coach Justin Fitzgerald’s “great special teams philosophy” according to Goochland head football coach Alex Fruth.

“We are super aggressive and the boys buy into it. The fact that Will blocked all those kicks shows that 10 guys did their job for one guy to make a big-time play,” Fruth said. “But it takes a special kind of player to be

willing to do that role of diving in there to block a ball exploding off the foot of a kicker. That is Will!” Stratton’s standout efforts were among the highlights in another stellar season for the Bulldogs. They finished

the 2019 season with a 12-2 record, a Class 3, Region B championship and an appearance in the Class 3 state semifinals. Stratton would go on to make the Times-Dispatch Second Team All-Metro for defense. Stratton started with flag football when he was around 4 or 5 years old and came up playing for the Goochland Youth Athletic Association teams. Growing up, he always looked up to his older brother, Vincent Stratton Jr., who also played for the varsity team. “I always used to sit on the sidelines with him and with his teammates,” Will said. “I fell in love with the game.” It was around when he first got into pads – when he was able to tackle other players – that he started to see the impact he could make on the gridiron. “When I hit somebody, it’s just like a rush that goes through my body and that makes me feel good,” he said. “I like being able to provide for a team.” Stratton’s rare achievement on special teams wasn’t his only major contribution to Goochland football last year. He also led the way in fumble recoveries (five) and in defensive touchdowns (two). He was second on the team behind Anthony Holland in tackles made (80 total, 30 solo) and he joined teammate Kindrick Braxton in pacing the Bulldogs in tackles for loss with eight apiece. Stratton also had four sacks and added a forced fumble. “Our coaches have always helped us, showed us the true meaning in the game and it’s all brought us together,” he said. “I feel like being on the defense, I played a big part and so did everybody else. VHSL delays start of 2020-21 sports to December Fall sports moved to spring 2021 By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch

The executive committee of the Virginia High School League made official Monday morning what had been suspected for weeks, that there will be no public high school sports in Virginia this fall. The league voted 34-1 to play all sports between December and June, canceling the fall football season and altering the schedules of

every sport. In the past two months, new cases of the coronavirus have climbed in the state, from 658 on June 13 to 1,127 on Friday. Despite the current plan to start this winter, VHSL executive director Billy Haun cautioned that highrisk sports such as football and basketball, can’t be played until Gov. Ralph Northam’s Phase Three restrictions are loosened. The current plan is contingent on the hope that more athletic activity is allowed this winter. “As long as we’re in Phase Three and we have the guidelines we have, we’re not going

to be able to play the highrisk sports as they are,” Haun said. “Virginia will have to move out of Phase Three, or Phase Three guidelines will have to be revised to allow sports to begin.” Under the current restrictions, lower-risk and moderate-risk sports, including golf, cross country and baseball, can be played. There was discussion of going ahead with golf and cross country, but conducting in-person sports while many school district conduct instruction online would present a challenge. The VHSL’s plan calls for winter sports (basketball, gym-

can do that and achieve that, imagine what I could do my following year – maybe I get faster or I get bigger and I’m able to do more.” It’s pushed him to build up. His main goals are to get bigger, stronger “and block a lot more punts this year” and keep working with his fellow Bulldogs as a team. He has his own weight room

in his home’s basement, so he hasn’t had to worry about whether or not he’d be able to lift during the COVID-19 pandemic. While he hasn’t yet really talked to any schools, Stratton is hoping that they’ve seen what he’s been able to do. “Hopefully, my senior year, everything will start falling into place.”

wouldn’t have been able to do that by myself.” “Will is the continuation of a long line of outstanding linebackers we have had here at Goochland,” Fruth said. “Like the guys before him, you know when the whistle is blown, that Will will be at the ball.” Fruth described how, each year, Stratton has been a spark plug for his team, making big plays at the right time. “He just has a nose for the ball,” Fruth said. “Really looking forward to his senior year.” As it stands, the football season is now slated to take place in the spring – nearly 15 months from when Stratton and his Goochland teammates last took the field against Hopewell on Dec. 7, 2019. But his accomplishments from that year have motivated him a lot going into his next season. “When you start blocking them, you just start getting a rush,” he said. “It pushes File photo by Jim Ridolphi/Goochland Gazette you harder, because if you Goochland’s Will Stratton blocks Skyline’s attempted punt.

nastics, indoor track, swimming and diving and wrestling) to begin Dec. 14, with the first competitions on Dec. 28. The season would wrap up Feb. 20. Fall sports (football, cheerleading, cross country, field hockey, golf and volleyball) would commence Feb. 15, play its first contest March 1 and cease May 1. Spring sports (baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer, tennis and track and field) would start April 12, play its first contest April 26 and finalize its season on June 26. Dates could still change, and whether playoffs will be conducted is still to be determined. It seems clear that

there won’t be state championships as usual, but the league has discussed playing a bowl-game format in which each team plays a one-game postseason. The committee also considered two other proposals. In the first, the fall season would begin as normal, but only cross country and golf would be allowed. In the second, the spring and fall seasons wouldn’t be flip flopped, allowing baseball, softball, tennis and track and field to be played. Members of the executive committee liked its third model, because it would allow for every sport to be played.

The Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association, which loosely governs private schools in the state, said last week that it will not sponsor championships this fall. That doesn’t stop private schools from playing their own seasons without state-wide championships. Life Christian Academy, for example, said it will play its football season. Football players who will enroll in college early, such as Hopewell running back TreVeyon Henderson, who committed to Ohio State, are effectively denied their senior seasons.

Billy Thackston, from Goochland, throws a pitch in last Tuesday’s Post 201 baseball game.

Thackston pitches in 6-3 win Staff Report

Billy Thackston of Goochland contributed to Post 201’s winning efforts in last Tuesday’s weather-short-

ened 6-3 win over Post 137. The rising senior at Christ School in Arden, North Carolina combined with fellow pitchers Colby Cheatham and Tommy Preston to hold

Post 137 to three hits, three earned runs and six walks. Thackston threw a hitless inning, allowed two earned runs, issued two walks and struck out one.

Verlander shut down with arm injury Staff Report

Goochland High School alum and Houston Astros ace pitcher Justin Verlander was shut down by his team on Sunday due to a forearm strain. How much time he will miss is still in question. The shutdown itself is for a

couple of weeks, after which Verlander will be re-evaluated according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. Astros beat writer Chandler Rome initially reported that Verlander would miss the rest of the season, which Verlander, via Twitter, said was “not accurate.” He added: “I’m hopeful that with

some rest it will heal and I’ll be able to return soon.” Verlander earned the win in his Astros’ 8-2 season opener versus the Seattle Mariners on Friday. He scattered three hits, two earned runs and one walk and struck out seven across six innings pitched.

I want to choose the remote learning option for my student, but I do not have reliable internet access. What do I do? We have resources available for families without reliable internet access, though universal connectivity challenges limit many of those options. If you would like to participate in remote learning but do not have reliable internet access, please contact your child’s principal to discuss options as soon as possible. Reliable internet can be accessed at various locations in our community, including county government and school facilities .
