School board delays vote on virtual opening to school year

It’s why he worked so hard for the past four years, earning his advanced diploma as a member of Goochland High School’s Class of 2020 while also starring on the Bulldogs’ varsity football team. Decision to vote Aug. 11 comes after parents and students demand schools offer in-person learning from start of school year By Roslyn Ryan Editor
After a three-hour meeting that saw dozens of local parents and students voice their support for an in-person learning option at the start of the coming school year, Goochland County School Board members ultimately decided that delaying the decision until the board’s Aug. 11 meeting was the only appropriate action. The special meeting, which was held at Goochland High School on Monday night, had been scheduled in order to allow board members to vote on new plan for the start of the 2020-2021 school year, one that differed from a plan presented and agreed upon on July 14. The original plan had outlined an opening strategy that allowed for students who chose to come back to school to have two days of in-person instructional time supplemented by virtual learning, while also permitting students to select a virtual-only option if they preferred. As Goochland School Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Raley shared Monday night, however, recent data has led school officials to move toward see Schools > 2

TCSD bond refi will save county $12 million Contributed report
Recently, Goochland County completed a refinancing of the Virginia Resources Authority (VRA) Series 2012 Tuckahoe Creek Service District (TCSD) Bonds that will ultimately net $12.1 million in debt service savings for the TCSD. While the refinancing occurred in July 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, planning for it began in early fall 2019. The TCSD is a water and sewer service district that was
created by the county in 2002 in eastern Goochland to provide water and sewer services to certain areas in the district and to provide a mechanism for payment. The purpose of the TCSD is to spur business, commercial and industrial growth, as well as economic development within the district, the West Creek Business Park, and the Notch at West Creek. In September 2019, the Virginia Resources Authority (VRA) and the county’s finan-

cial advisor, PFM Financial Advisors, LLC advised the county that, based on current market conditions, the county may realize favorable financing terms for a potential refunding of the VRA Series 2012 (TCSD) Bonds. In November 2019, the Goochland County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution authorizing the issuance of a series of bonds by the county in 2020 if certain targets were met, including a required savings of at least 3 percent. Market conditions became very favorable in June, and on July 14 the county sold the bonds through VRA and closed on them on July 29. The county issued $61.3
million in new current interest rate bonds through VRA to partially replace the VRA Series 2012 (TCSD) Bonds. The sale of the bonds to VRA generated proceeds that resulted in net present value debt service savings of $8.5 million or 15.2 percent, well beyond the 3 percent target. “The strategy and savings on the Tuckahoe Creek Service District bond refinancing exemplifies Goochland County’s commitment to excellence in financial management and stewardship of public funds,” said Susan Lascolette, Chair of the Board of Supervisors. “Being able to accomplish these savings for the county, amidst a global pandemic and challenging
economic climate, demonstrates solid financial planning to position the county for future success.” The 2020 refinancing of the VRA Series 2012 (TCSD) Bonds is the second refinancing of TCSD Bonds. In 2002, the county issued VRA Series 2002 Water and Sewer System Revenue Bonds to finance water and sewer improvement projects in the newly created TCSD. In 2012, the county was able to take advantage of lower interest rates and successfully refinanced the existing 2002 bonds. safety of our students and staff, and you can’t give someone an education if they are not alive.” District 2 representative William Quarles also cautioned that the board was not willing to ignore a threat to public health in order to bring students back to school. “I have heard every word you have said,” said Quarles. “The fear is real, we have a pandemic. We have to look at this from a safety standpoint or a normalcy standpoint — and normalcy is not going to happen.” The ultimate decision, said District 3 representative Karen Horn, will be one that is based not on emotion but on the best available data. “That’s what we do as educators,” Horn said. “We look at data, we process data, we analyze data, and we make the best decision possible.” District 4 representative Michael Newman, who spent his career as a middle and high school principal and served as the principal of Goochland High School before retiring in
2016, said he was confident that the county could come together to find a workable solution but insisted that he was not yet sure about his own stance on virtual learning versus offering an in-person option for parents. “My mind has been up and down and all around on this,” Newman told attendees. “I appreciate everything that has been said tonight…I know it is all heartfelt.” After three hours of comments by both attendees and board members, it became clear that the decision would require even further consideration. Board chairman John Wright admitted that he simply could not proceed with a vote without conferring with the other board members and taking into account all that they had heard during the meeting. “I want to be able to look every one in the eye,” Wright said, “and say that we gave them and their views our full consideration.”

an initial opening period that would see most students learning virtually from home. It quickly became apparent that most people in attendance did not support that option, with speaker after speaker calling on board members to consider the negative consequences for students and families of continuing to keep students out of the classroom. Initially, several board members appeared to push back against claims that the inperson option would be worth the potential risk. District 1 representative Sandra Barefoot-Reid, a former EMT who cited her experience assessing dangerous situations and evaluating risk, did not mince words as she urged those in attendance not to forget that the virus has already taken a number of lives in Goochland County. “Look at the statistics,” she said. “This virus is very dangerous. State funds available to improve farm land Contributed report
Have you been pondering ways to improve the natural resources on your farm? Are your livestock drinking from a stream? Is there erosion occurring from your crop field? Are you interested in a winter cover on a crop field? Would you like to convert a crop field into permanent grass? The Monacan Soil and Water Conservation District office (MSWCD) has funds through the Virginia General Assembly for these types of best management practices (BMPs) and more on your farm. The program that offers these funds is called the Virginia Agricultural Cost Share Program (VACS). Monacan administers the VACS program for Goochland and Powhatan Counties. The practices within the program are designed to reduce agricultural pollution
Campus continued from >1 part because the school would give him the opportunity to pursue his dream of becoming a physical therapist. An added bonus? His football career would be able to continue with the CNU Captains, for whom he hoped to earn a spot playing safety in the fall. What Braxton and thousands of other recent Virginia high school graduates never could have imagined, however, was how COVID-19 would impact their lives at such a pivotal time, putting a damper on — or in some cases derailing altogether— the college experiences they have been looking forward to for so long. Making it even more difficult is the fact that many of the colleges and universities around the state that have not already barred students from returning to campus in the fall have embraced different strategies for bringing students back safely. And in most cases those strategies are subject to change as the traditional start of the fall semester draws closer. While Braxton is still planning on attending CNU in person rather than opting to take his classes online, his move-in date has already been changed from Aug. 8 to Aug. 20. And although he will still have the opportunity to play football for the school, it won’t be until the spring.
to the Chesapeake Bay. There are 47 SWCDs that cover the counties of Virginia. Visit vaswcd.org for more information about them. There are eligibility requirements for the VACS program. Agricultural land is defined as “land being used in a BONA FIDE program of agricultural management and engaged in the production of agricultural, horticultural or forest products for market.” The real estate must consist of a minimum of five contiguous acres and have verifiable gross receipts in excess of $1,000 per year from the production or sale of agricultural, horticultural or forest products produced on the applicant’s agricultural land for each of the past five years. If you would like to view the VACS manual and preview any of the 57 best
management practice specifications, it can be found at http://consapps.dcr.virginia.gov/htdocs/agbmpman/agbmptoc. htm. Monacan provided funding for the following this past fiscal year: a poultry waste control and composter facility; over 3,000 acres of cover crops; 160 acres of permanent grass; 5,500 acres of nutrient management; and over 9 miles of streambank excluded from 658 cattle creating 48 acres of 35-foot riparian (creek) buffers. If you are considering farm land and/ or water quality improvement, please call MSWCD. The Monacan office is located in the Historic Central High School Building at 2748 Dogtown Rd. in Goochland, and can be reached at (804)556-4936. Cover crop applications are due by Aug. 27.
Braxton said the decision to stay on campus was motivated in part by the fact that, as a Biology major, many of his classes include labs that can’t be completed online. He admitted that the uncertainty of starting this next chapter in the midst of a pandemic has been unnerving, but adds that he and many of his peers are simply trying to make the best of the situation. He and his soon-to-be roommate have talked about the situation, and both feel confident that taking the proper precautions will ensure they stay safe. “I’m a little bit rattled by the whole thing, but I know personally there is only so much I can do,” said Braxton. “I wouldn’t say I’m disappointed, but it’s definitely not the college experience I had been planning on.” Braxton certainly isn’t alone. Last Sunday, as he headed off with his family for a final getaway before the start of the fall semester, recent GHS graduate James DeLoach said he, like so many other students, was watching and waiting to see how his first year at Virgini Tech will begin. DeLoach, the Valedictorian of his class, said it was certainly strange to wrap up his high school coursework from home after schools shut down in March. DeLoach plans to major in Computer Science, and could potentially take all of his classes virtually, but he said he would
still prefer to be on campus. As of Sunday Virginia Tech was still allowing students to live on campus if they choose to, and DeLoach said he feels staying there will be a better option for him. He’s excited to get to focus on subjects that interest him so much, he said, even if he and his fellow students may not get to experience all of the social activities that normally accompany college life. “I think at this point, we’re just trying to make the best of the situation and take what we can get,” DeLoach said. “And also to stay safe, of course.” For Demond Morris, who is set to begin his college career at the University of Virginia in just a few weeks, safety is definitely a priority. But so is regaining the sense of normalcy that so many recent graduates lost last spring when they were forced off their high school campuses. “Having lost the end of our senior year, we don’t want to risk this new start to our freshman year of college,” said Morris, who plans to major in Political Science and Government with an added focus on business and finance. Morris, who is eying a future run for public office and already possesses a knack for eloquent phrasing, neatly summed up the intended goal. “We want to start on campus,” he declared, “and we want to end on campus.”

The Lord’s Example
John 14:31 “…but so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded Me. Get up, let us go from here.” It was Jesus’ highest goal to obey His heavenly Father. His submission to the Father made His sacrifice for the sins of all mankind so effective. He died for and shed His blood for our sins. He rose from the dead on the third day. It is now our turn to do His will. He said: “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (John 14:15) Today He is Savior. One day He will be your Judge. He invites you to His will. GHS grad’s mega yard sale raises funds for Young Life Contributed report
Earlier this year, when it came to deciding what his senior project would be, Goochland’s Shane Brennan knew he wanted to give back to his community in a very special way. As a long-time Goochland Young Life member, Brennan quickly realized the group would be the perfect one to support. “It has been a game changer for me and a lot of other Goochland youth,” Brennan said of the program, a youth-focused ministry with chapters around the world. “So what better way [to give back] than to organize a fundraiser for them? Goochland teens need a safe, fun Christian environment where they can celebrate just being kids, and Young Life is growing to fill that need.” Brennan hit on the idea of a donation yard sale for Young Life and the project took off from there. Once word spread about this great venture and the young man behind it, donations of every kind came pouring in. Unfortunately, the 2020 senior graduation
projects were derailed by COVID-19. But even though the proposed sale site canceled, Brennan kept the faith and continued gathering donations, recruiting volunteers, researching safety guidelines and networking with the Goochland community to find a location and carry on with the project — and carry on it did! Manakin Sabot Farmers Market generously stepped in to offer their location, and Brennan and his team eventually sold three buildings worth of stored donated treasures to well over a 100 shoppers. Many attendees offered the hard-working Goochland Young Life volunteers more than the items were worth, just to donate to the cause. Brennan said he wishes to thank “Goochland Young Life volunteers, our wonderful community and the truly amazing people that contributed to make this happen. During a time of uncertainty, when the positive can be hard to find, this is one more powerful example of what makes a community strong.”

Even when real, fear doesn’t always match reality By Roslyn Ryan Editor
For the past several weeks, my morning routine has gone pretty much exactly like this every day: Get up, get dressed, eat breakfast, walk out the front door, wait for something awful to happen. And, by “awful,” I mean something along the lines of being abducted, robbed, bludgeoned or worse. Just by way of clarification, I don’t live in a particularly dangerous area, or in an ostentatious home that might hint at vast sums of money that could be paid in ransom should someone decide to kidnap me. I don’t run afoul of kingpins or cartel leaders, carry any massive gambling debt or remember ever having acquired any sworn enemies. I am not an international spy, a government witness or a woman on the run after having absconded with her former husband’s life savings. In short, I can think of abso-
lutely no rational reason why lately I almost always expect someone to leap out of the bushes and club me over the head as soon as I step out my front door each morning. Except for one. For some unexplainable reason, my husband and I have recently become hooked on the true crime show “Dateline: Secrets Revealed,” watching episode after episode as a way to unwind after a long day. If you’ve never seen the show, I guarantee you’ve seen something like it. The formula — a grisly crime, a race to figure out who did it, and enough twists and false leads to keep the viewer hooked — is not exactly groundbreaking, but it is often just interesting enough to keep you hitting “Play next episode.” What I hadn’t realized these past few weeks, however, as I played couch detective and marveled at the callous nature of some criminals and the tragic misfortune of their victims, was how it was beginning
to color the way I saw the non-televised world I step out into each day. Binge-watch enough crimefocused television, I realized, and it soon begins to feel as though it’s only a matter of time before you become a victim yourself. It isn’t difficult, we’ve all learned, for perception of a threat to be skewed by the sheer amount of attention we — or others — give to it. I couldn’t help but think of this idea the other day, as I considered the people I know who have been living in fear and almost total isolation since February, when public health officials in the United States first began sounding the alarm over COVID-19. A few have pre-existing conditions and are likely wise to take extreme precautions, but at least a handful seem to have allowed the constant blaring headlines and doomsday-style proclamations emanating from some news outlets to frighten them into believing coronavirus awaits them around every corner, poised to strike.
It began to occur to me that perhaps, in the case of COVID-19, consuming too much information (or, as often is the case, speculation) can have a negative impact on our health — not as dangerous as the virus itself, perhaps, but harmful nonetheless. The coronavirus is a real threat, to be certain, but we as individuals still have the upper hand. If we take the proper precautions and use common sense, there is no reason for the vast majority of us to live in fear. Wear a mask, wash your hands, stay safe — but also sane. Consume media responsibly and remember that moderation is a great rule of thumb for everything, from COVID-19 coverage to crime shows. As for me, I’ve switched to something a bit lighter for my endof-the-day television viewing: cooking shows. My waistline may not thank me in the long run, but I’m feeling a whole lot safer already.

Football not in the plans for this fall, and it’s OK By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
For more years that I’d like to admit, my Friday nights in the fall have been spent patrolling a sideline of a high school football game. The largest majority of those assignments included Goochland football, and, over those years, I’ve been treated to some of the most exciting and inspiring examples of athletic prowess imaginable. And it’s become almost normal for me to be involved in a playoff run, most of them featuring numerous victories. Playing football in November and December have become the norm for Bulldog fans and the ones lucky enough to provide coverage. I’ve been fortunate to have been there for two state championships and several efforts that just missed the top prize. Along the way, I’ve met and interacted with some memorable athletes. More importantly, I’ve witnessed what can happen when a team is consistently well-coached, and what happens when players believe in a proven system. This fall will be different, and, as days become shorter and the night time air is filled with a chill, the football field at Goochland will be vacant, the stands emptied of fans, and the line at the concession stand, non-existent. I’m not sure it has ever happened before, and I can’t recall a disruption to the season equal to this. The only comparable period was a brief couple of weeks when a sniper terrorized the area, forcing the cancellation or postponement of several area contests. So, count me among the disappointed when the VHSL see Football > page 7

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor The very nature of football leads us all to scratch our heads and wonder what form of social distancing is possible when players are banging heads on each and every play. I’m not unlike millions of Americans who miss sports, and the thought of those empty Friday nights and Saturdays without college football is disheartening. But, quite honestly, we have bigger fish to fry as a country, and this is only temporary.

That certainly doesn’t make it any easier as we sit home on Friday nights this fall envisioning what could have been happening on the field in Goochland. No doubt, we’ll all miss it, and remain hopeful that spring football will signify a return to normalcy, and another chance to chase that championship.

Need some nature? Tour several local gardens for free By Cathy McCarthy Contributing Writer
Given all the craziness of 2020 so far, now may be a great time to take a relaxing walk in a garden. There are three local gardens you can visit for free within a short drive of Goochland Courthouse. Each
of the three gardens — managed and maintained by the Goochland Powhatan Master Gardener Association — is a demonstration and teaching garden set up to educate home gardeners about different types of plants that are typically appropriate for and successful in Central Virginia gardens.
Native Plant Trail This garden is in Fighting Creek Park at 2200 Mann Rd, Powhatan, 23139. It follows the 1/4 mile loop trail behind the Powhatan County Library. Plants are identified with signs. What are Native Plants? Native plants are species that have evolved in a particu-
lar region over an extended period of time. Factors that govern their success or demise include: climate, soil, geographical and topographical characteristics of the area, as well as interactions with other species in that same area. Typically, native plants are more disease resistant, drought resistant, and pest

Public Meetings Interstate 64/664 Corridor Improvement Plan You are invited to view an enhanced project website to learn about the Interstate 64/664 Corridor Study, provide input on problem areas and recommend improvements. The Commonwealth Transportation Board, with support from the Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment (OIPI), the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT), is developing an I-64/664 Corridor Improvement Plan. The plan will be developed as part of a data-driven study to (i) identify key problem areas along the corridor, and (ii) identify potential solutions and areas for additional review and study. You are invited to provide input on the I-64/664 Corridor Improvement Plan online, the first in a series of online feedback opportunities this year. The purpose of this first series of meetings is to gather public input on safety and congestion concerns on the I-64 and I-664 corridors in the Commonwealth. The study team has prepared a project information website that will introduce viewers to the data-driven process undertaken to identify problem areas along the corridor via a storyboard display. Comments will be received via a MetroQuest survey that asks users a series of questions about their commuting habits and solicits comments about problem areas and potential solutions. MetroQuest utilizes map markers to “geo-tag” user comments to their chosen area along the corridor. Comments can also be submitted via email to: va64corridorplan@vdot.virginia.gov. The virtual meeting room will be available at va64corridor.org beginning July 14, 2020. The first comment period will end August 14, 2020. Additional comment opportunities will be available throughout the study. VDOT ensures nondiscrimination and equal employment in all programs and activities in accordance with Title VI and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. If you need further information on these policies or need special assistance for persons with disabilities or limited English proficiency, please contact the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Title VI Specialist at 804-786-2730 (TTY users call 711).
resistant than non-native plants. Many are even deer resistant, which is clearly a bonus in a Goochland garden. The goal of the Native Plant Trail is to allow home gardeners to learn about native plants here in Central Virginia so they can identify and appreciate them in their home landscape. Because the Native Trail winds through the woods, many of the plants can serve as ideas and inspiration for a shady home landscape. As with any garden, some of the plants are only visible during certain seasons, especially spring. So if you don’t see one of these “ephemerals”, come back in another season. A printable list of plants on the trail, a trail map, and a full printable brochure is available at https://www. gpmga.org/native-plant-trailpowhatan
The Pollinator Garden This garden is also located in Fighting Creek Park in Powhatan across from the sports fields and the playground. The garden is planted with butterfly-attracting perennials as well as basic shrubs that provide food and shelter for pollinators during all four seasons of the year. The goal of the garden is to demonstrate to home gardeners a selection of pollinator friendly plants that can succeed in Central Virginia and could be used in their own home gardens. Planting even one or two pollinator friendly plants a year in your home garden is a simple way to help support our pollinator populations.
The Historic Garden
The Historic Garden was a joint effort between the Goochland Powhatan Master Gardeners and the Powhatan Historical Society and was dedicated in June 2006 as a legacy project for the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown. The garden is a small ‘pocket garden’ located behind the Old Jail building – now the home of the Powhatan Historical Society. It can be accessed from Main Street by a short walk to the rear of Courthouse Square. The Historic Garden has a formal style appropriate to the Colonial period with raised beds to separate the various types of plants. The planting beds are divided into functional areas and filled with plants grown in gardens in Powhatan during the time period 1777 to 1830. The garden planting includes a variety of historical plants. There are vegetables, culinary and medicinal herbs, and a bed called “grandmother’s garden” with flowers that would have been planted for ornament. A map and brief history of the garden is located in the pocket hanging on the fence post by the bench. All three gardens are open and accessible seven days a week. The two gardens located within Fighting Creek Park are available during park hours which are currently 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Cathy McCarthy is a certified Master Gardener through the Virginia Cooperative Extension and a member of the Goochland Powhatan Master Gardener Association. If you are interested in learning more about GPMGA programs or how to become a master gardener volunteer please visit gpmga.org.

Thackston, committee help Post 201 win 7-5 By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
COLONIAL HEIGHTS – When he plays for Christ School in Arden, North Carolina, rising senior and Goochland resident Billy Thackston gets to see athletes from all over North Carolina and other states like Georgia. The tempo, he said, is quicker, and the fields are larger. But at Christ School, he’s also the only one from Virginia, he said. So it’s meant a lot to Thackston to get back home and play local summer baseball games with his friends. And in his first year moving up from American Legion Post 201’s Juniors team to the Seniors, he’s been holding his own against collegiate bats. Thackston last Tuesday got the start in Post 201’s game versus Post 284 at Shepherd Stadium. He was one of six pitchers for the visitors, and altogether, Post 201’s arms held the hosting Bucs to five runs, four hits and eight walks and struck out seven. Post 201 went on to win Tuesday’s game 7-5. In two innings pitched, Thackston struck out one batter on a full count and held Post 284’s first nine batters to two walks and one earned run off of two hits. Thackston said the key was to “just throw strikes and let them hit it and let the defense do the work, knowing that I have a great defense behind me.” Going into the contest, American Legion Post 201 coach Eric Mead had made up his mind that his team would pitch by committee. It paid off. Thackston, Andrew Cheatham, Carson Conner and Connor Woodel held Post 284’s bats to four hits and one run through the

first six innings – a stretch that proved crucial for the visitors when the Bucs took advantage of a couple of fielding errors and tightened the lead to a two-run ballgame. With a runner on base for 284, Drew Camp, always a home run threat, stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, representing the home team’s tying run. Carter Dawson took over the mound to face him. “Don’t put it down the plate” was the thought that he said went through his mind. He was trying to work outside – his two-
seam was working well – and he used commentary from the dugout to fuel himself. His last throw to Camp was a 3-2, two-out pitch. Camp skied it high and deep into right field. It fell into the waiting glove of Caleb Kersey, ending the game. “Those pitchers did a really good job all night long,” Mead said. Behind Thackston in the second inning, Colby Cheatham hit the ground on a rundown catch in right field, and Alex Balisteri, after
just missing what would have been a spectacular diving catch on Camden Weston’s RBI single into the left field corner, quickly recovered to relay the ball to third baseman Brandon Eike, who tagged out Weston trying to stretch his double into a triple. After Thackston, Post 201’s Andrew Cheatham pitched two innings, striking out three and allowing one hit. He overcame a 3-0 count to fan Camp on three straight strikes. Conner, who attends Blessed Sacrament Huguenot, made his first pitching appear-
ance in a Senior Legion game during the fifth inning. While he walked two, he didn’t allow any hits or runs. Behind Conner, shortstop Josh Boelt pumped his fist shortly after flipping the ball to second baseman Cameron Shields, who in turn zipped it to first baseman James Nelson to complete a 6-4-3 double play. Woodel struck out the side in the sixth inning to go along with his two quality at-bats, which included a run scored and a line drive single into center field in the third. While Stone Talley was on
the hill for just two-thirds of the seventh inning, Mead said he pitched very well and noted that the fielders made two errors behind him on a dropped catch in shallow left-center and a missed grab on a ground ball down the first-base line. Dawson closed out the game, facing only Camp. Post 201 seized the lead for good in the third inning. The visitors scored five runs in the frame on a walk, a hit by pitch, two wild pitches and a groundout to the shortstop from Talley. Woodel, who hit a leadoff line drive single to center field to kick-start Post 201’s productive third inning, further stretched his team’s lead in the sixth when he advanced to first on a hardhit ground ball and a shortstop error, allowing Kersey to dash home and beat the tag on the slide across the plate. Nelson, who batted 2 for 3 with two RBI, a run and a double, gave Post 201 a 1-0 lead in the first inning when he smacked a single into right field to plate Christian Chambers, who overall scored two runs. Eike walked in the go-ahead run in the third inning, scored a run in that same frame and doubled to the left field wall in the sixth. In addition to tagging out Weston in the second inning, he reacted in an instant to a line drive hit hard to him in the seventh, reaching over and snatching the laser out of the air from third base. “You’ve got to be on your toes every play, ready to roll,” he said. For Eike, who will soon be attending the University of North Carolina where he’ll play for the Division I Tar Heels, it’s just been good to get back on the field this summer. “I think we all needed it.”

Benedictine alum Jack Anderson throws no-hitter Post 361 wins 4-0 as weather shortens contest By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
COLONIAL HEIGHTS – Benedictine graduate and Christopher Newport commit Jack Anderson on July 21 threw a no-hitter in Post 361’s weather-shortened 4-0 win over Post 284 at Shepherd Stadium. “It’s awesome. It’s a pretty good feeling when you throw a whole game and the team doesn’t get a hit off of you. The chances of winning are pretty good. That’s all you can ask for, is just go out there and compete and just give 100 percent,” Anderson said. “It’s one of the best feelings out there when you have everything working, and catching breaks, and things going your way.” It was the third time Anderson had thrown a nohitter in his overall baseball career. The first time he nohit a team was with his 13u travel ball team. He threw his

second as a freshman while pitching for James River High School. This time around, he said it was good to get one against a local team featuring
familiar players. Anderson struck out six and allowed no hits and no runs across five innings. He would’ve kept pitching, but his
team was batting in the top of the sixth when the game was called due to weather. Facing some of the top high school and collegiate players
from the Tri-Cities, Chester and lower Chesterfield communities, Anderson kept them off-balance by mixing up his pitches. His slider, curveball and changeup were working well for him as complements to his fastball. He was locating well, mixing up spots and keeping Post 284’s lineup guessing. “Those guys aren’t easy to throw to, for sure,” he said. “You’ve got to make sure you’re hitting spots against them.” Anderson never allowed more than two runners on base in a given frame., and no one from Post 284 advanced past second base. In each of his six strikeouts, Anderson got ahead in the count right away and stayed ahead. He threw no more than two balls to any of the batters he fanned. “When I’m out there, I don’t like to mess around with batters or anything – I like to go right at them. I’m not a big believer in wasting pitches really. I’m going to come at you, hopefully get you out on four or five pitches at the most,” Anderson said. “I trust my stuff and if I put it where I want to put it, I don’t think
they’re going to touch it.” Overall, he faced five over the minimum and allowed six base runners – three on walks and another three on hits by pitch. He struggled a little bit with location and finding it in the first inning, but once he got through that opening frame, he was on cruise control for most of the game after that. He also got a lift from his teammates Colin Regnery, Chance Muir and Parker West, who turned a 4-6-3 double play for the team’s first two outs. “That’s definitely a confidence boost because you get two guys out there and you’ve got no one on instead of a lead-off walk, like that usually comes around to score,” Anderson said. “But you eliminate that with a doubleplay ball, and that really turns the tide of an inning.” Going forward, Anderson’s no-hitter is the kind of performance that you can keep in the back of your head, he said. “If I find a time in the future where I’m struggling or something like that, you think about that moment . . . it puts your mind in a better spot.”
Some private schools won’t sponsor football in the fall Same schools will hold tennis and XC competitions By Eric Kolenich, Times-Dispatch
Collegiate, Trinity Episcopal and St. Christopher’s won’t sponsor football this fall, but unlike public schools, they intend to host cross country meets and tennis matches in the autumn. Competition will be
delayed until after Oct. 1 to allow schools to focus on returning to the classroom before reinstating athletics. A statement was issued by the League of Independent Schools and the Prep League, which comprises 11 private schools across the state, including Saint Gertrude, St. Catherine’s and Veritas in the Richmond area. Girls teams compete in the LIS, and boys teams are members of the Prep League. Benedictine, which com-
petes independently, has not made a decision on fall sports. Life Christian, an independent team in Chester, plans to play football. The Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools, which includes Steward, hasn’t come to a determination. The LIS and Prep League also include Fork Union Military Academy, Norfolk Academy, St. Margaret’s, Woodberry Forest and St. Anne’s-Belfield. The leagues said that
they will consider at a later date whether they can host girls volleyball, soccer, field hockey, baseball, softball and basketball. They currently have no plans to play football, wrestling and lacrosse, and the leagues did not address if they would consider playing football in the spring, as the Virginia High School League voted on Monday. Other lower-risk sports will continue in the winter and spring: track and field, swimming and diving and
golf. Cross country meets will feature staggered start times. Instead of every runner racing against one another, each team will run the course on its own, and each runner will be timed. The runner with the fastest time will be the winner. At Collegiate, teams will continue to meet and work out and practice within restrictions, school athletics director Karen Doxey said. The school still wants its students to have a team experience, even if they can cannot play games.
On Monday night, the Washington Catholic Athletic League, whose teams often schedule Richmond-area opponents, announced it won’t play fall sports either. Benedictine, Collegiate, St. Christopher’s and Steward plan to conduct in-person classes five days a week this fall, diverging from local public school districts, which are planning remote learning to begin the year. Trinity Episcopal is planning a hybrid method.

IN THE GARDEN: TIps and advice
Want to learn more about your soil? Be sure to check your pH levels
A
ccording to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, soil pH indicates the acidity of alkalinity in soil. Soil pH can be used to learn various things about soil properties, and can be most accurately measured using a pH meter. A less accurate, though still reliable way to measure soil pH is to use a pH kit that employs
most gardeners are unable to determine which nematodes we have in our soil. The bad guys can promote poor root development and swollen root tips in plants. This can appear in a plant that is stunted or exhibits interveinal chlorosis. Interveinal chlorosis is the yellowing of leaf tissue between the leaf veins while the veins themselves remain green. When certain marigolds are integrated with certain nematodes, the marigolds will kill off the nematodes in that particular spot thus reducing the nematode numbers. This can control a harmful nematode population. Marigolds may also excrete a chemical which can repel nematodes in surrounding areas. Companion planting with marigolds helps, but the science is not conclusive regarding nematode control. Some attractive bedding plant or French marigold cultivars produce higher levels of toxin and might be considered more effective in reducing bad nematodes in soil. ‘Petite Gold,’ ‘Petite Harmony,’ ‘Tangerine,’ and ‘Goldie,’ ‘Polynemia’ and ‘Single Gold’ are recommended. dyes. Such kits require soil samples, which are then saturated with dye. Dyes change color, and the colors that appear will indicate to homeowners whether the soil pH has increased or decreased. Soil pH can vary on the same lawn, so homeowners who want to get an accurate determination of the soil pH levels may want to gather samples from various areas of the
the ground at the end of the growing season can help to increase the efficacy of repelling nematodes. Marigolds might help control nematodes, but they will not eliminate them. If you have a severe problem, you may have to consider choosing and growing disease resistant plant varieties or practice other pest control measures in your garden. A call to your Cooperative Extension office is a good starting point for a solution.
Marigolds are a poor man’s saffron On a happier note, I’ll conclude with marigolds as an edible flower. Their colorful petals have been fed to chickens to promote richer colored egg yolks. Don’t have saffron? Marigold petals can be used to enhance the golden color in soups and stews. The petals can also be used as a natural food coloring for cake frosting and other goodies. Numerous recipes can be found on-line especially for Calendula officinalis often called a marigold. yard. The scale to measure soil pH runs from 0 to 14, and as numbers decrease from 7, the acidity of soil gets higher, while the alkalinity of soil increases as numbers increase from 7. Soil pH levels typically range from 3 to 10, though most plants thrive in slightly acidic soil (pH levels between 6 and 7) that provides ample access to many nutrients.— MetroCreative
