According to Amazon spokesperson Leah Seay, the company saw a significant spike in demand as the coronavirus pandemic descended, with Prime members shopping more often and online grocery sales tripling when compared to the same period last year. see Direction > 2

Goochland resident Larry Hine recently told county supervisors that he has grown tired of watching delivery drivers barrel through his Cedar Plains Rd property in a way he describes as reckless and even hostile. He has called police several times and claims one driver, after finding himself trapped on Hine’s property by a locked gate, drive his vehicle straight at him. The drivers are doing it to save time, Hine explained, a fact he can both understand and sympathize with — to a point. “I don’t even mind people cutting through my property,

but not at 55 miles per hour, running over horses,” Hine said. Hine said he has confronted several drivers, and soon realized that they are often in a difficult position: the GPS directions they are provided and told they must follow, the drivers tell Hine, specifically direct them down his driveway. In speaking to board members, Hine pointed out that some of the trucks are not marked and could cause concern for residents who see strange vehicles zipping around their neighborhoods. His goal, he told board members, is for them to issue a cease and desist order asking Amazon to correct the problem. According to Goochland County Sheriff Steven Creasey, the issue is not yet widespread
enough to cause concern for most residents, though he did say that his office had received other complaints in the past about drivers following GPS directions onto someone’s property. Eventually the issue will likely be sorted out by the company providing the directions, Creasey said, but added that he can see how it might be frustrating for residents. That frustration, it seems, can go both ways. “Not long ago my husband drove on the road past a locked gate on State Farm property in Powhatan,” said Goochland resident Barb Person. “Sitting there in the other side if the gate, apparently studying his GPS, was an Amazon driver wondering how he got there and how far he had to backtrack to get just on the other side of the gate.”
children in Goochland County who experience neglect, abuse or trauma have access to trained caring advocates who will fight for and represent their best interests.” Tiffany is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, has a bachelor’s degree from SUNY College at Brockport, and a Master of Social Work degree from Syracuse University. She has previous professional experience with the Department of Corrections, home health and hospice, therapeutic mentoring, parent support services, and adult probation. Tiffany is excited to return to Goochland County as she previously spent 14 years working for Elk Hill as their Admissions Coordinator, which allowed her to serve on the Goochland FAPT committee and participate in several other county activities. Most recently Ms. Tiffany has been busy growing a private mental health practice in Powhatan and helping found
the nonprofit organization, Cumberland Community Cares, whose efforts are focused on providing food resources to the residents of Cumberland County, a USDA designated food desert area. Established in 2005, Goochland CASA advocates for children involved in cases before the Goochland Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. The organization recruits, screens, trains, and supervises volunteers to represent the needs of abused and neglected children, children in juvenile dependency proceedings and children in need of services or supervision. The volunteer Advocates promote safe, permanent homes for all children and educate the community about the needs of abused and neglected children. Goochland CASA also works with other nonprofit organizations and local agencies to promote support for and awareness of the needs of vulnerable children in the community.

Person of Interest: Sherion Farmer By Frank Wentzel Contributing Writer
Upon hearing the words, “Hello darling, welcome to the Pickel Barrel,” and a bit curious as to whom such kind words might be directed, I discovered that they were offered not only to me but to virtually every Goochland visitor to Sherion Farmer’s Pickle Barrel Restaurant. This being my very first encounter with the Goochland native, indeed I discovered an amazingly efficient person. “I truly love to work,” Farmer claimed. “I also love flowers, people and to support the community in which I live.” Just recently, setting up five patio tables in her restaurant’s tented exterior for Goochland Cares, Farmer’s efforts resulted in the donation of over 4,000 pounds of food. “I enjoy seeing the smiles
on people’s faces,” she said. Farmer, a true “Short Pump” native, recalls the time when the current Short Pump Shopping Center (a mile east) with its enormous diversity of shopping, was popular only for its hand-operated water pump serving thirsty horses and their riders. Open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, The Picklee Barrel, with itss highly qualified 25-member staff, looks forward daily to serving some 100 breakfasts, 100 lunches, and around 150 dinners or a sum total of about 2,400 total weekly or 28,000 servings annually to Pickel Barrel
guests. Quite a task. Farmer also remembers many Goochland families who have had positive influences in her life, especially the Nuckols and Rowseys. “Looking forward to a special future vacation?” I asked? “This is my vacation, darling,” she confided, with a wry smile.

This is a test: Knowing details about soil is critical for gardening success By Cathy McCarthy Contributing Writer
Gardening in the heat of August in Central Virginia can be difficult. The weeds seem to be taking over this late in the season and the humidity can remove a gardener’s motivation to fight them. However, there is one 15 minute gardening task you should complete this month that will pay dividends in your garden all year long — take a soil sample and have it tested. Why, you might ask, should I have my soil tested? Soil tests are easy to do and will provide you with some of the key information you need to have a successful garden. Knowledge is power and guessing is expensive in terms of wasted time and
money. We all want to do the right things for our landscapes, but feeding plants and lawns can be like feeding a young toddler. You can see signs of distress but you don’t always know what’s wrong. An inexpensive soil test will provide information about soil composition, pH, and the plant available levels of phosphorus, potassium, and seven other essential elements or nutrients. It also provides recommendations on whether any nutrients need to be added and how much of each nutrient to add. It’s like having a cheat sheet on how to have a better garden and avoid killing your plants. Some homeowners have asked if they can just skip the testing step and go straight to fertilizing. Unfortunately, that’s a bad idea. Overapplication or application of unneeded materials can result in salt injury to plants, cause nutrient imbalances that retard plant growth, and has the potential to become an environmental pollutant. You can actually kill a plant or lawn through ‘kindness’. Nutrient toxicity is a condition where an overdose of one of the 16 elements for normal growth causes a plant to stop growing. Using too much or the wrong type of fertilizer can have broader negative impacts than just damaging your home’s landscape. Nitrogen and phosphorus from home applications are currently major sources of pollution in our waterways. These nutrients lead to algae blooms, which feed bacteria population booms, which then causes a crash in oxygen levels that lead to fish kills. Therefore, you should use only the minimum of amount of fertilizer that your landscape needs and your soil test report will tell you what that amount
should be. Late summer is a great time to get your soil test done because soil is naturally depleted at the end of the growing season, testing labs are usually not as busy, and you will get your report in time to implement the recommendations. For example, if you receive a recommendation to apply lime a fall application allows for the 3 to 6 months that are needed for the lime to react with the soil before Spring planting. To get started, you will need to collect a soil sample. The accuracy of the soil test and report is a reflection of the quality of the sample taken so follow the instructions provided by the soil testing lab to correctly obtain your sample. There are commercial testing labs that offer a variety of services or you can use the routine soil testing offered through the Virginia Cooperative Extension. The fee for the Extension’s routine test package is $10 per sample for instate residents. The Goochland Extension office provides soil sampling boxes and instructions. They can be contacted at (804) 556- 5841 or at their office at 2748 Dogtown Road . You can visit Virginia Tech’s Soil Testing Lab’s website at www. soiltest.vt.edu to obtain even more insight into what your soil test report will contain. So if the heat and humidity mean you only complete a few garden chores this month, make one of them digging up a soil sample. The results will be well worth it. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
Casey a champion for county’s most vulnerable By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Looking around these days, it’s pretty clear that there are very few things on which everyone agrees. You say “Potato,” I say “Po-tah-to,” and then we are suddenly embroiled in a five-hour debate focused on tuber production in Idaho, government conspiracies and possibly even the Chinese. But even as we argue and quibble these days about political matters and social issues, there is at least one truth that just about all of us believe: Our children deserve the best we can give them. They deserve to be protected, and to grow up in safe and loving homes. They deserve opportunities, and to have someone looking out for them.
Sadly, as we all know too well, it doesn’t always go this way. Through no fault of their own, so many children in our community are pulled into the court system as the result of abuse or neglect. Their lives now in disarray, facing a trauma, these children suddenly find themselves desperately in need of a steadying adult presence that will help guide them through the difficult weeks and months ahead. And that, for the past 15 years, is where Goochland resident Ann Casey has come in. As the executive director of Goochland’s Court Appointed Special Advocate, or CASA, Casey has made it her mission to see that children in need have a voice and a person looking out for their best
interests during an intensely difficult time. According to the organization’s website, CASA volunteers stay with each case until it is closed and the child is in a safe, permanent home, working with legal and child welfare professionals, educators and service providers to ensure that judges have all the information they need to make the most well-informed decisions for each child. Casey began her work with the organization in 2005 as a volunteer, and five years later took on the role of executive director, working tirelessly to recruit volunteers and raise funds to help support the program. It was a role, it seems, for which she was perfect. During Casey’s tenure, the number of CASA volunteers has
increased from eight in 2010 to 24 now. Those volunteers now take on around 35 cases per year, offering support to the most vulnerable members of our community. Casey is now retiring, but the impact she has made on the CASA organization, and on the community as a whole, is indelible. She’s been a champion for children, an asset to her community, and an example to all of what it means to truly devote oneself to improving the lives of others. And that’s certainly something — even if it’s one of the only things — on which we can all agree. For more information on Goochland CASA, including how to volunteer with the organization, visit www.goochlandcasa.netlify.app/ main.html or call (804) 556-5876.
Student: Amid COVID-19 pain, rare glimmers of hope By Rachel Ferguson Contributing Writer
I remember the exact moment when I found out my senior year was no longer going to play out the way I had previously witnessed all of the upperclassmen before me experience. I was enjoying an unusually warm afternoon for March, with the temperature in the high 70s. I remember thinking the day could not have been more
perfect or beautiful. I was waiting during senior early release to return back to Goochland High to pick up my sister due to all afternoon activities being cancelled that day. That is when we received the announcement that schools would be closed for two weeks. That was the moment I knew COVID-19 was going to be much more impactful than anyone had expected. My class never had the chance to say their final goodbyes, finish their last sports game, take final exams, or most importantly thank the staff of teachers and administrators who poured their heart and souls into ensuring we would, after 13 years, walk across that stage. At this point
in time there was not even a stage for graduates to cross. As we continued to charter these untested waters, all students adapted to our new way of learning. We began to have virtual meetings with our classes, instead of in person lectures; Advanced Placement Exams were carried out online; and even the extremely dreaded SOL tests were cancelled. Letters to the Editor Refinance of TCSD bond showed board of supervisors at its best Dear Editor, It’s nice to be able to express a positive opinion to the editor in this pandemic time. Regarding the TCSD, I wish to congratulate Goochland County for re-financing the TCSD bond amid much social and economic turmoil. My husband and I moved here in early 2011 and were very aware and supportive of the re-fi in 2012, which at the time seemed like a huge hurdle to pass. That this took place a second time, and was quiet and seamless, shows that our board of supervisors and adjunct staff are not only efficient and effective, but are also fiscally responsible. In these times, that is extremely important and relevant. My thanks to everyone involved. Good job. Goochland! Rose Vrabel Manakin Sabot
Consequences of keeping schools closed worse than that of virus Dear Editor, Your story “School board delays vote” and your editorial about fear and reality were very well written. I have to believe you must not live in Goochland if you have any fear of stepping out of your front door and “wait for something awful to happen.” Goochland County is one of the safest places to live. I have lived in Goochland for 45 years and traveled all over the U.S. and many other countries. There is no safer place than Goochland County. Having my closest mentors check in on me daily is what helped me persevere and realize there was an end in sight. Perhaps this was not the ending we thought we had earned, but like everyone else we adapted and learned to celebrate the small victories we acquired. For instance, this year’s Goochland High School Graduation Ceremony was by far the most amazing graduation of which I have ever taken part. Last year, I earned the honor of serving as Junior Marshall for the Senior Class of 2019. While their ceremony was beautiful, ours was personable. Having the small town feel of graduating at one of Goochland County’s landmarks, the Goochland Drive-In, was incomparable to any other ceremony. While waiting for the ceremony to start, a slideshow projected every graduate’s portrait, as well as personal pictures, with a description of their future plans on the large screen. We were even rewarded with what was the most impressive firework show I had ever seen. This experience was the most perfect example of a victory during a time where most people could only feel loss: loss of loved ones and the struggle of learning to live in isolation due to COVID-19. Not only were we given a graduation, but parents also came together and put

can manage his budget better than Sheriff Agnew. At age 72 and with no kids in school, I don’t have a “dog in the hunt” regarding school reopening except I pay a heck of a lot of property taxes to support the Goochland school system.
So I figure I have a right to express an opinion on school opening. If the schools don’t reopen. I want some tax money back. Any informed person knows the coronavirus only affects a very small percentage of the U.S population and
on a senior drive-by where community members filled the student parking lot and seniors were driven through the rows in parade-like fashion. Everyone came together and celebrated our accomplishments and perseverance. The Class of 2020 had strength like no other. Strength that pushed us to finish high school remotely and adapt to the most bizarre school year. Strength from being brought into this world from a different type of crisis — 9/11. Our first experiences in the world consisted of different adaptations to terror and here we are 18 years later experiencing yet another round. I may be biased but there is nowhere I’d rather spend my childhood than Goochland County. Our small town community and teachers have dedicated their lives to supporting our students and families throughout the years. As my class enjoyed their final moments together during graduation we began to prepare for the next unknown — college. Before most colleges begin, students experience in-person orientation and other acculturations to become familiar with the university. Again, this is something that has been stripped from us. We will be going into college like any other freshmen, scared, but also filled with excitement for the future opportunities that await us. But, what we don’t know is this: Will we be renstricted to our dorm rooms? Will we even have the chance during our freshmen year to take
classes in person? Will there be sporting events and small social gatherings where students are allowed to attend? For me personally, I do not have the option to take all classes remotely from my home. By doing that, I receive less aid and end up paying more for my tuition that I have already worked continuously to lower through scholarships and grants. How is that fair to decrease aid due to the option to take classes online because of a worldwide pandemic? If there is one thing everyone has learned during this, it is that nothing is promised to be fair. This virus has taken so much from everyone that celebrating the small victories like an in-person graduation, a senior drive-by, and other modified activities is the only way to bring back parts of a normal life. One day COVID19 will pass and the world may be a completely different place with different health regulations and new norms. This iss our life for now and we must take every opportunity we are given to continue living during this atypical time. Reflecting on times of quarantine and social distancing, it is amazing to see how people have shifted their way of life to put others before them. We have taken the time to appreciate the simplest of things such as a phone call or text to a friend to check on them, family time at a slower pace, and even the wearing of a mask to protect one another. Together, we will get through this.

Tale of Melvin and Howard was one for the ages By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
As I watched another rerun of a previously played college football game, a familiar tune filtered its way through the crowd noise and grabbed my attention. The rebroadcast was a holiday-themed bowl game, and that provided my first hint as
to what the song could be. It was a catchy tune, but not one that evoked immediate familiarity ... but I knew I’d heard that song somewhere before. “It’s Melvin Dummar. It’s Melvin Dummar!” I shouted in the direction of my children. They replied with a look to which I’ve grown accustomed, that glare of puzzlement that clearly delineates a
line between generations — and basically means, “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” The band was playing “Santa’s Souped Up Sleigh”, a holiday tune that never gained the same attention as let’s say “White Christmas”, but still evokes memories for a few of us who still remember the story of its author, Melvin

Dummar. It’s a story that was almost too fantastic to be real, and, in the end, several courts at various levels ruled that it wasn’t. Even with the lack of verification, the story was too good for Hollywood to pass on, and, in 1980, the movie Melvin and Howard was released. It’s based on the accounts of an everyday run of the mill working man named Melvin Dummar, whose life up to an eventful night in the Nevada desert in 1967, was less than Academy Award material. He worked every job imaginable from gas station attendant to milkman, suffered through one unfaithful marriage, and seemed like the guy who always gets the shaft. He buried his sorrow in song, and viewed himself as somewhat of an entertainer, and in the movie displayed those talents at a Dairy Christmas Party by singing Santa’s Souped Up Sleigh. Outside of a small Nevada town located about 150 miles south of Las Vegas in 1967, Dummar pulled his Caprice to the side of the road to relieve himself. As he walked away from his car seeking what privacy the barren desert could provide, he noticed what appeared at first glance to be a bum laying injured in the scrub hidden from the main road. Dummar assisted the man, assuming he was a misguided drunk or homeless man who had become lost in the desert. The man asked Dummar for a ride to Las Vegas, and he obliged. As the two drove through the desert, the early morning sunrise providing the backdrop for two men; one an example of the highest echelons of human achievement, the other a struggling schmuck trying to figure out
where next month’s rent was coming from. In the movie, Hughes opens up to Dummar about his family history, a devotion to flying, and — like his unlikely sidekick for the evening — an affection for the musical note. They traveled along a two-lane highway as the skies seemed to distribute each element of the spectrum in a heavenly-divined collage of colors not yet named singing and sharing stories. When Dummar dropped the stranger off at the Sands Hotel, Hughes reportedly asked him if he had any spare change. Dummar dug in his pocket and tossed his last coins to Hughes as the walked into the kitchen area of the hotel. As he sped away in the old Chevrolet, the whole encounter seemed odd to Dummar, but, in the continuation of his mundane life, memories of the encounter were soon erased. After Hughes’ death in 1976, Dummar was running a gas station in Salt Lake, Utah, when a will was delivered to the Headquarters of the Mormon Church, a document claiming to be the Last Will and Testament of Howard Hughes. Among others named in the will was Melvin Dummar who was listed as one of the beneficiaries and entitled to about $156 million of Hughes’ $9 billion fortune. A probate court examined the document and discovered a fingerprint on the edge of the paper that belonged to Melvin Dummar. The unassuming attendant explained he had handled the will, but had not altered or created the last wishes of one of the most eccentric entrepreneurs in history.
While working at his gas station days earlier, Dummar claimed a limousine pulled in for gas, and a man had quizzed Dummar for clues regarding his identify. When the car left, the will was sitting on the desk in the office, and Dummar became scared and delivered the will to the Mormon headquarters. The changing story extinguished any chance that Dummar would share in the wealth, and Hughes’ fortunes were eventually distributed to more than two dozen relatives. Dummar never abandoned his claim to the money, and — swore to his death — the will was authentic. A retired FBI agent investigated his claims in the early 2000s and did discover some of Hughes’ closest aides who confirmed Dummar’s story. But a judge didn’t buy it, and, again, Dummar’s case was dismissed, still believing until he took his final breath in 2018 that Hughes was compensating him for his act of kindness on that darkened night in the Nevada desert. In the movie, as the pair ride along with windows rolled down enjoying the aroma of a recent desert downpour, Dummar insists that Hughes sing his song. Now, who knows if Howard Hughes ever sang Melvin Dummar’s Santa’s Souped up Sleigh. It’s anybody’s guess, but I’d like to believe it happened. It’s a story that is so engaging, enticing and fanciful, a few facts from a less romantic world of reality should not tarnish its authenticity. Now, I relayed a much more abbreviated version of this story to my children, and they actually looked like they got it, right up the point when one looked at me and said: “Who is Howard Hughes?”

Benedictine’s Barnes commits to Air Force By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

hen he was a boy, Brenden Barnes would wrestle around with his older brother. And his dad Michael Barnes, who had wrestled for a year himself, would see Brenden get the better of his brother. He suggested to Brenden that he wrestle. “I’ll give it a shot,” was Brenden’s reply. He started out at Dale Wrestling Club in his hometown of Chester at the age of 7. That’s where he wrestled Nick Vafiadis his first year. While Nick beat him, it was the closest match that Nick had had, and his dad, Sam Vafiadis, went up to Brenden and said that Nick needed a wrestling partner. “Can you come up to Predator?” Brenden recalled Sam asking him. He did. That decision sowed the seed for his successes. He placed fifth out of 149 competitors in the NHSCA nationals as a freshman. He won VAWA State Championships in both freestyle and the Greco-Roman style. He’s a four-time I-64 titlist, and he’s earned two VISAA state championships for Benedictine. He’s also committed to wrestling on the NCAA Division I level for the United States Air Force Academy. The rising Benedictine senior announced his decision on July 28. “I think it matches his personality really well and his ability level very well also,” said Brenden’s Benedictine coach David Yost. “I think a solid D-I program like that is going to continue to push

Brenden and I think it’s a perfect fit. “ The Academy reached out to Brenden around December, and for a few months it’s been his No. 1 choice. His dad Michael was an Air Force officer himself, and he told Brenden about all the good things that can come out of it, including a top-notch education. The wrestling coaches also talked to him frequently; he recalled how other schools would call him maybe once or twice, but the Air Force,
he said, called him almost every week. “I’m super excited, just overall from what I saw, when I visited,” he said. And he likes to be challenged. It’s why he went to Benedictine – to surround himself with people who are working towards the same goal and have the same mindset. “That’s what I like about the Academy probably the most, is that I’m surrounding myself with the top five percentage of people – all working towards the same goal
and just being better.” Brenden became just the second Benedictine wrestler to be elected team captain as a junior. He said his work ethic is probably his best trait, and his dad taught him to lead by example. That’s exactly what he does, noted Yost, who described Brenden as “one of the hardest workers in the room.” Yost also had him as a student in 10th-grade Theology, and the way that Brenden has carried himself in school “was exactly paral-
lel to how he carried himself on the mat” – cool, collected, very disciplined and selfreliant. “He models what hard work looks like for the guys, and it’s very clear with his results that that’s what it takes,” Yost said. “If you want to be successful, do what he does: put you head down, work hard and get after it.” When Brenden’s competing, he gets after it in the first period and doesn’t let up. He likes to attack – low single sweeps, knee pulls – and he
likes to be quick, getting his opponents going one way before he shoots the other way to get them off-balance. He’s also tough on top, notching 35 pins this past year. In one of his keynote victories, he pinned Nasir Wilkinson, a National Prep placer from Maryland. Brenden always, always wants to get the first takedown, because it puts him at an advantage for the rest of the match. “In my mind, I’m thinking: ‘All right, I’m up two points, so I know you’re not going to take me down,’ so he has to get out from one of my best (things): on top,” Brenden said. “So in my mind, if I get the first takedown, I’m winning the match.” Brenden’s not intimidated by anybody, Yost said. “He doesn’t care who he’s wrestling. He just gets after it, gets in your face with that BCP style, and that’s what I love to see,” he said. “There’s so many times where we’re wrestling on the mat, I’m telling the whole bench: ‘Are you seeing this? Check it out, that’s what you’ve got to be: in their face, getting after it for six whole minutes,’ and he just exemplifies that perfectly.” In the room, that’s what coach Yost always stresses: “Six minutes, six minutes,” Brenden said. “We’re big on carrying yourself well in victory and defeat on and off the mat. That being said, you can be a gentleman off the mat and a warrior on it, and that’s exactly what he does,” Yost said of Brenden. “We teach offense for six minutes, and Brenden is nasty on his feet, and then he gets on top, too, and he’s got those strong legs, see Barnes> 10

Goochland High School’s Conner Popielarz competes in the 2020 East Coast Gold Olympic weightlifting competition.
Record-breaking Popielarz first in age, weight class, sets new mark in weightlifting competition Contributed Report
VIRGINIA BEACH – Goochland High School rising senior Conner Popielarz, competing in the 2020 East Coast Gold Olympic weightlifting competition held the weekend of July 31 – Aug. 2 in Virginia Beach, placed first in his age/ weight class and third overall in open class competing against adults of all ages and weight. In his age/weight class he tied the Virginia state snatch record at 115 kilograms (253 pounds) and broke the Virginia state record for clean & jerk at 145 kilograms (319 pounds). He also broke the total combination lift record in one event. Popielarz has qualified for nationals, which are currently still scheduled to be held this December in Atlanta.
District change approved Staff Reports
The Virginia High School League on July 30 voted 22-0 to place Goochland into the Jefferson District for the 202122 and 2022-23 school years. Goochland will compete one more year in the James River District before joining a Charlottesville-centric division
that includes the high schools of Albemarle, Charlottesville, Louisa, Monticello, Orange, Western Albemarle and Fluvanna County, the latter of which has already begun to emerge as a rival to Goochland. As far as postseason play goes, the Bulldogs will continue to compete in the Class 3 state division.
and he wraps people up and he kind of asserts his will, and that’s the idea . . . no mercy on the mat. But then he can be a perfect gentleman and a Christian gentleman off the mat.” Brenden tailors how he trains to how he wrestles. “I don’t wrestle like I am Superman, like super-jacked, but I like to be quick, so that’s why I do more cardio,” he said. While he lifts twice a week, he estimates that he runs from three to five times a week either outside or on a treadmill. Throughout his entire wrestling career, his parents, Michael and Jennifer Barnes, have been there by his side. Jennifer is the team mom for Benedictine wrestling, helping with the setup and operation of tournaments as well as meals. Michael is also the team photographer, and both of them, Brenden said, have never missed a tournament, even going all the way to Tulsa, Oklahoma with him. As for the person he’s become – how he carries himself, how good he is as a wrestler – he traces it back to Virginia Team Predator. The Chester-based club over the past decade has shown itself to be a powerhouse, coaching and building up wrestlers from all across the Richmond region and helping set them on the path to becoming state champions and collegiate wrestlers. Brenden praised Team Predator’s head coach Mark Strickland, calling him the reason why he’s an established wrestler. “I’d say he’s one of the best coaches in Virginia and up there in the country, too,” Brenden said. “He pushes us to the right extent and he’s just a great overall coach and he brings in other coaches for
our benefits.” From being part of Team Predator, you gain personality traits like discipline, Brenden said, as well as experience and exposure – the club and its wrestlers travel all around the United States, with Brenden having placed third at Tulsa Nationals in Oklahoma when he was 11 years old. In the Predator Room, he’s bettered himself in tandem with VHSL state champions Nick Vafiadis, Evan Holloway and Matthew Eberly, all from New Kent. He also had a couple of four-time state champions to look up to in Benedictine’s Josh Wyland and Powhatan’s Collin Gerardi. “I just learned the drive that they had, how bad they wanted to succeed,” Brenden said. “I actually watched Collin win an NHSCA senior title, and I could tell he strived for that – that was one of his probably best moments in his high school career, if not the best.” Brenden came up winning championships and tournaments throughout elementary and middle school and into high school. But he ran into Erik Roggie his freshman year in the 106 VISAA state final. Roggie, a National Prep runner-up, defeated Brenden 2-1 that year for the title. Brenden hasn’t lost in that tournament since. As a sophomore competing in the 113 bracket, he pinned each of his first two opponents within 45 seconds, defeated semifinalist Lucas Yates by tech fall and edged past Dustin Smith in a 3-2 decision for his first private school state championship. The biggest states-related battle he had to overcome his junior year occurred off the mat. Brenden had come down with the flu the week before, so he couldn’t practice

that whole week. “I’m not going to lie; it got to me. I didn’t know if I was going to be allowed to wrestle because I had the flu a week before, and I didn’t know the rules for that,” Brenden said. “So just going into it – I like to picture stuff in my head and work through every situation in my head – so when I was running on the treadmill, that’s what I was doing, and I’m thinking: I’m not going to let this little flu get in the way of me winning the state title.” He pinned his way through the 120 weight-class bracket and bested his finals opponent, Cale Roggie, in a 7-3 decision, winning his second individual state trophy and helping his Benedictine Cadets earn the 2020 VISAA team championship. Brenden did also defeat longtime rival Erik 12-7 in the 120 weight-class final of the 2019 VAWA FS State Championships. His goals include another
state title, another team state title and placing in the top three in both the National Prep and Beast of the East tournaments. Yost predicts that Brenden is “going to be better than ever this coming year.” “I think he’s just going to have a very dominant senior year,” Yost said, “and he’s going to carry it right into the Air Force Academy; I think he’s going to be very, very competitive and successful there also.” Yost loves coaching guys like Brenden – they’re the ones who make you step up your game, because then you have to be just as committed as they are. “Otherwise, it’s a disservice to them, and so he’s made me step up my game and figure out ways or learn ways to push him in the room,” Yost said. “I’m just very thankful and honored to have coached a kid like him. He’s a perfect-model Benedictine Cadet.”

I know Mr. Quarles was a nuclear safety expert at the North Anna power plant and is a dedicated Democrat. So Mr. Quarles knows perfectly well how to skew the school decision for political
purposes. The District 1 representative Sandra Barefoot-Reid also appears to be a bleeding heart liberal who is clearly not familiar with recent evidence concerning COVID-19 or ignores it. These Democrat-minded people are clearly more interested in doing everything possible to stagnate the economy for the purpose of making President Trump look bad and get him out of office in November at the expense of Goochland children.

Cost sharing program seeks to help reduce agricultural pollution into Chesapeake Bay Contributed report
Have you been pondering ways to improve the natural resources on your farm? Are your livestock drinking from a stream? Is there erosion occurring from your crop field? Are you interested in a winter cover on a crop field? Would you like to convert a crop field into permanent grass? The Monacan Soil and Water Conservation District office (MSWCD) has funds through the Virginia General Assembly for these types of best management practices (BMPs) and more on your farm. The program that offers these funds is called the Virginia Agricultural Cost Share Program (VACS). Monacan administers the VACS program for Goochland and Powhatan Counties. The practices within the program are designed to reduce agricultural pollution to the Chesapeake Bay. There are 47 SWCDs that cover the counties of Virginia. Visit vaswcd.org for more information about them. There are eligibility requirements for the VACS program. Agricultural land is defined as “land being used in a BONA FIDE program of agricultural management and engaged in the production of agricultural, horticultural or forest products for market.” The real estate must consist of a minimum of five contiguous acres and have verifiable gross receipts in excess of $1,000 per year from the production or sale of agricultural, horticultural or forest products produced on the applicant’s agricultural land for each of the past five years. If you would like to view the VACS manual and preview any of the 57 best management practice specifications, it can be found at http://consapps.dcr.virginia.gov/ htdocs/agbmpman/agbmptoc.htm. Monacan provided funding for the following this past fiscal year: a poultry waste control and composter facility; over 3,000 acres of cover crops; 160 acres of permanent grass; 5,500 acres of nutrient management; and over 9 miles of streambank excluded from 658 cattle creating 48 acres of 35-foot riparian (creek) buffers. If you are considering farm land and/or water quality improvement, please call MSWCD. The Monacan office is located in the Historic Central High School Building at 2748 Dogtown Rd. in Goochland, and can be reached at (804)556-4936. Cover crop applications are due by Aug. 27.
