County leaders pledge to open dialogue about racial inequality By Roslyn Ryan Editor

A first day like no other

Kaleb Christmas started second grade at Randolph Elementary School on Monday, connecting with his new teacher via the Internet. After initially choosing a plan that would have given students the option of attending classes in person two days a week, the school board voted this month to change course and begin the year with fully virtual learning.

After a summer that saw calls for social justice reform ring out across the nation, the Goochland County Board of Supervisors publically committed earlier this month to creating a working group to address issues of racial discrimination in Goochland County. Board chair Susan Lascolette announced the formation of the group during the board’s Aug. 4 meeting. “We as representatives on the Board of Supervisors have received correspondence from people in our community regarding racial discrimination in our county,” Lascolette said. “Goochland County Board of Supervisors, the County, and County staff do not tolerate unequal treatment of any citizen based on race, religion, creed or any other unlawful factor and we will not allow it in the future.” see Board > page 3

cer survivors and caregivers, but the organization needs help to continue those services. Simply put, say organizers, the group’s mission is at risk and in danger of losing a generation of progress in research and treatments. Projected revenue for the year has declined by a third, representing more than $200 million. In light of this, the ACS is calling on its dedicated Relay For Life family to join them in recovering some of the fundraising revenue lost to the pandemic and some of

the hope for brighter times. How can you help? By visiting www.RelayForLife.org/ GoochlandVA and purchasing a luminaria in honor or memory of your loved one. Each year, the American Cancer Society invests $100 million in new research. Because of the budget shortfall, however, cancer research funding could be cut by 50 percent this year. Fortunately, while the pandemic may have forced a change in some plans, there will still be an opportunity to come together in a drive-thru fashion. of the Relay family and the communities of Goochland and Louisa are invited to participate in a drive-thru luminaria ceremony in the parking lot of Tucker Park at Maidens Crossings (1300 Maidens Road, Maidens, VA 23102) along the James River. Additionally, all attendees are urged to donate canned goods to benefit the GoochlandCares Food Pantry. These will be collected at the first turn in the parking lot of the event. Luminarias purchased online by Sept. 15 will be displayed at the drive-thru luminaria ceremony.

Young local author says inspiration for first book was found close to home By Roslyn Ryan Editor

When Teddy Hitaffer, 15, was assigned the task of writing a short story as part of his homeschool coursework last spring, the Goochland resident happily got to work crafting a story about his family’s beloved dog, Tucker. He’s loved writing and storytelling since he was a young child, Teddy explained recently, and he quickly began weaving together a captivating tale about Tucker facing down his fears to save the family from danger. The only issue? Once he began writing, he found that he didn’t want to stop. What began as a simple grammar assignment quickly blossomed into a full-fledged book titled “Bravery Doesn’t Come From A Copper Coin.” The book, complete with clever illustrations that Teddy created himself by using a pro-

He decided to self-publish, Teddy says, because he wanted to be able to have more of a handson role in the marketing and distribution of the book. Lest anyone think that his work is pulled solely from his imagination, Teddy explains he did plenty of research on fear and on the ways — both healthy and unhealthy — people deal with it. Hidden throughout the story are also little details pulled from his own family life, a fact his mother Tiffany shares was her favorite part of the book. “To see everything there in the writing, I cried,” says Tiffany. “It’s a beautiful story— he’s really woven this tapestry of our lives.” Tiffany says her son has always possessed an aptitude for writing and language, a gift she and her husband Ted

Planting garlic this fall will yield delicious reward next summer By Audrey Hirsch Contributing Writer

Homegrown garlic is delicious and rewarding and is a satisfying end to a busy summer growing season. It goes into the ground in the Fall and is harvested early the following Summer. Garlic is easy to grow and gives a jump start to the Summer harvest season.

It is pest resistant as rabbits, deer, groundhogs, and squirrels avoid it. There are two principal types of garlic: hardneck and softneck. They are grown the same way but have key differences: Hardneck tends to have more flavor but does not store as well. Hardneck varieties produce edible scapes two to four weeks before the bulbs

are ready. These should be removed and eaten. Hardneck stalks are rigid. Softneck has braidable stalks and is harder to peel. It does not bolt easily, thrives through our erratic winters and stores well. Avoid planting commercially grown garlic from the grocery store. It may be treated with anti-sprouting chemicals and could be diseased. Order

seed garlic cloves from online retailers or local stores that sell garlic for planting. The ideal time for planting garlic is 3-5 weeks before the ground freezes hard. In Central Virginia, that tends to be midOctober to mid-November. Plant in a sunny or partially shady location with good drainage. Garlic does best in tilled, sandy loam soil, with 2 to 3 inches of organic matter (such as compost or aged manure) added. Soil should be loosened from 8 to 12 inches.

Raised beds are ideal for growing garlic. Prepare several shallow furrows in the soil 6 inches apart. Garlic bulbs should be separated into cloves just prior to planting. Keep the skins on the cloves and plant with the points facing up, spacing 6 to 8 inches apart. Plant only the large cloves and plant to a depth 1.5 to 2 inches of soil over each clove. Save the smaller cloves for cooking. Smooth the surface of the soil after planting. During leaf raking season,

mulch your garlic bed with 1 to 2 inches of chopped leaves. Keep the rows well weeded but avoid damaging the stalks or bulbs. There will not be much weeding needed in Fall or Winter but as the weather warms, the weeds will appear. Not much growth happens in the cold months, but when the weather warms and days lengthen, growth is rapid. Fertilize twice once the garlic stalks are growing, using 10/10/10, or organic fertilizers such as liquid kelp and fish emulsion, approximately one month apart. Water when the soil feels dry one inch below the surface. In our gardening zone in Central Virginia, we harvest from late May to mid-June. Harvest when the lower 1/3 of the leaves turn brown, and there are still 5 to 6 leaves remaining on the plant. Look for definition between the neck and bulb, an immature bulb curves into the neck. Allow the soil to dry out prior to harvest. By that time, the heads are starting to form cloves. Harvest by carefully loosening soil under the bulbs, using a digging fork. Try not to damage the skins or bulbs during harvest. Keep two or three layers of papery skin on the bulb and gently remove excess soil. Once harvested, avoid direct sunlight on the bulbs. To cure the bulbs, move them to a shaded, warm, dry, well ventilated area, and place them in a thin layer on a shelf or screen. Allow the bulbs to cure for 1 to 2 months but check them periodically for spoilage or rot. The bulbs have a high water content and curing allows this water to evaporate for longer storage. Store bulbs in a dry, well-ventilated area, such as an unheated room, root cellar or garage. Remember to save some larger bulbs for planting next year’s crop and enjoy the rest.

Over half a century later, King’s words still resonate By Roslyn Ryan Editor

As the Presidential election draws near, we are going to be hearing a lot of speeches, boatloads of them, most delivered with great enthusiasm to friendly, appreciative audiences. Some will be almost instantly forgettable and some may offer up some cringe-worthy snafus, such as Howard Dean’s campaign-torpedoing war whoop in 2004. On the subject of speeches, tomorrow happens to mark the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous “I have a dream” speech, delivered in front of the

Lincoln Memorial on Aug. 28, 1963. In light of this anniversary, I got to thinking this morning about some of the many speeches I’ve heard over the course of my life, some good and some lacking. I thought of those times I’d been moved to tears by the power of a few simple words, and the times I’d been left underwhelmed by a torrent of verbiage delivered without much conviction. “There is nothing in the world like a persuasive speech to fuddle the mental apparatus and upset the convictions and debauch the emotions of an audience not practiced in the tricks and delusions of ora-

tory,” Mark Twain once wrote, and as we move closer to Election Day it will be best to pay attention to that which does not sound authentic, or that traffics in half-truths or false promises. I can almost assure you that there will be examples of this on both ends of the political spectrum. Dr. King’s speech, on the other hand, has served for over half a century as an enduring example of the power of one man’s words to lift up and inspire countless individuals. Rather than seek division, it urged unity. Rather than cast blame or encourage retribution, it asked for peace. If you have never heard it in its

entirety, I urge you to take a few moments to listen to it today. Hear the words, feel their power — still spellbinding over half a century later — and perhaps offer a silent prayer that we can have more leaders who are not simply eloquent and persuasive, but who truly live the lines they speak. So strongly did King believe in the words he delivered that sweltering August day that he was willing to give his life for them. In doing so, he left a legacy of leadership that has inspired countless individuals around the world, and offered an example of courage and conviction that have stood the test of time.

Convention ‘party’ now a thing of past By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

I got my first hint of politics in 1955 when a large box truck parked in front of my neighbor’s house. Two large men in green uniforms emerged from the cab and unloaded a television set and delivered it to the house next door. There was nothing unique about one of our neighbors not having a television set. To be honest, the one we had only slightly qualified, but, when the rabbit ears were positioned just right, you could pick up all three stations. The next day I asked my neighbor if they liked their new television set, but quickly learned it was only a rental. Further inquiries revealed that the family always rented a television so they could watch the political conventions. Later that day, my mother filled in the details of political parsee Convention > 11

Deputy Henry Breitbarth happened to be patrolling in the area, and offered his assistance. It wasn’t a simple tire change either, since we were working with a jack that had never been used, and lug nuts that seemed to be welded on tight. There’s a cowboy, and champion, among us By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

It was through a sporting show on cable television in 2009 that Terry Stephenson first heard of cowboy action shooting. He watched the program and its featured match, and the sport appealed to him in multiple ways. He said he’d “always been a history nut,” and he grew up watching American Western series like Gunsmoke, Have Gun – Will Travel and Cheyenne. A couple weeks later, he went in to DeGoff ’s Firearms, and sitting on the counter was a card advertising Cowboy Action Shooting in Mechanicsville. He asked the owner of the store if there was a cowboy club nearby, and the owner replied, “Oh yeah! I shoot Cowboy Action.” The rest is history. After he went to a couple of matches – watched the action, asked questions, started purchasing firearms – Stephenson, who goes by Major B.S. Walker in cowboy action shooting, started competing in January 2010. Since then, he’s gone on to become a two-time Frontier Cartridge state champion, a three-time Frontier Cartridge gunfighter state champion, a senior state champion, a silver senior state champion and a Frontier Cartridge gunfighter Northeast regional champion. The Goochland County resident is a seven-time category winner in the state black powder championship, and one time, he was the overall winner for the entire match. Just about every match he goes to, Stephenson finishes between first and fifth. He was the overall match winner at the Mattaponi Sundowners Club this past Saturday. But for Stephenson, the most enjoyable part of the

entire sport is not the competition – it’s the camaraderie. “When you walk in and introduce yourself, it’s like you’ve instantly just walked in to a crowd of your longtime friends!” he said. “Everybody is no nice and so friendly, you feel right at home right off the bat.” There are several clubs across the state that feature cowboy action shooting, including the Montpelierbased Cavalier Cowboys, for which Stephenson is the match director. The clubs are affiliated with the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) organization that oversees cowboy

action shooting competitions worldwide. A cowboy action shooting match normally consists of six different stages and lasts three to four hours, depending on the competitors and stage difficulty. In each stage, you shoot steel targets using three sets of guns from the 18601899 time period, and you get timed for the entire run. You have to draw two single action revolvers from a holster, shoot five rounds each, then move to a different position. You also pick up a western-style lever action rifle and shoot 10 rounds using the rifle. Additionally, you’ll pick up either an 1897 pump-

action shotgun or a doublebarrel shotgun and shoot four targets. Your goal is to hit the targets in a specific order. Five seconds are added to your time when you miss the target. And if you shoot the targets in the wrong order – for example, if you’re supposed to double-tap target no. 1, double-tap no. 2 and then double-tap no. 3, but instead you double-tap no. 1, doubletap no. 2 and single-tap no. 3 – you are assessed a penalty of 10 additional seconds. Stephenson said the average competitor shoots 24 rounds in 35 seconds, while the faster shooters can typi-

cally move through the course in 24 seconds. In a normal match, you’ll expend 120 rifle and pistol rounds and 24 shotgun shells, he said. They have categories for weapons like the cap and ball pistol, styles like duelist in which you shoot the gun onehanded, and age; Stephenson shoots in silver senior (age 65-70), and they allow competitors as young as 12 years old. They even have dress categories, including classic cowboy and B western, both of which have dress codes. But with most of the other categories, you don’t necessarily have to look like a cowboy – you just have to wear attire that

existed in the Old West, including jeans, long-sleeve shirts and leather shoes and boots. You’re also not required to wear a hat, but most everybody there will wear a cowboy hat. And Stephenson and most of his fellow competitors like to dress the part. He was a brick contractor all his life, so he went to work in khakis and a tee-shirt. So when the weekend comes around, he relishes the opportunity to dress up as historical archetypes and famous figures – one week he’ll go as Wyatt Earp, the next he’ll go as Doc Holliday and then the next he might just go

Cowboy continued from >7 as a working cowboy. “Most of the guys have a certain character and style,” he said. “Me, because my name is Major B.S. Walker, I lean to the military side a little more – I have more cowboy hats with a military band on it than not, now – but I just dress how I feel at the time. “For me, it’s like Halloween every weekend; I can just dress up as a character,” he said,

“and that makes it fun!” All competitors also have to register an alias or cowboy name. Everyone locally, in the state and up and down the East Coast who has shot with Stephenson will call him by his cowboy name, Major B.S. Walker, even when they see him outside of matches. Stephenson estimates he shoots with about 200 different people every month, and of those 200, he probably knows the real name of about 30 of them, and that’s because those 30 are club officers.

The world-building and fellowship go beyond the matches themselves. This weekend Stephenson is heading to Powhatan to attend the wedding of a couple whom he’s shot with, and he said they want everyone to dress in cowboy attire. Stephenson also writes stories, poems and passages for the matches – once he featured a historical account on Kirk Douglas, another time he wrote about The Battle of the Alamo – and when the shooter is ready, instead of

Stephenson writes up and sends out the matches – including the targets and stage orders so that competitors can study them – every Monday before a weekend match. “We try to make it playful,” he said, adding in an early-August match writeup: “What adding that story does is to cement together what our sport is really all about, a bunch of friends getting together to have fun. Having that story is showing the world that we aren’t there to stomp our competition and then strut away like the cock on the walk. It’s there to set an example that cowboy shooters as a whole are in fact a bunch of caring loving people that are there to have fun first and foremost.” If a competitor’s gun breaks, Stephenson will lend that competitor his gun, even if his gun is faster. “I would rather lose being beat than to win because the other guy couldn’t finish,” Stephenson said. Between the various clubs both within the Richmond area and about an hour’s drive from the city in all directions, you can compete in cowboy action shooting every Saturday and Sunday on every weekend save for the second weekend, on which there’s not a Sunday match. The first weekend of every month, you can shoot at Pungo Posse in Sussex County on Saturday and at Cavalier Rifle and Pistol Club in Montpelier – the closest club to everyone in Goochland – on Sunday. The Cavalier Cowboys website has links to videos that cover a range of subjects from the history of SASS to how to get started in the sport (https://www. cavaliercowboys.org/new-shooter-information/new-shooterinfo/), and the SASS website includes a comprehensive list of cowboy action shooting clubs in the State of Virginia (https:// sassnet.com/clubs/Clubs_list.php?state=Virginia). every Sunday. On the fourth weekend, the Sundowners shoot again every Saturday, and the Pepper Mill Creek Gang in King George typically shoots every Sunday, but they haven’t been shooting since the onset of the current COVID-19 pandemic. There’s also Charlottesville’s Rivanna Ranger Company; Stephenson shoots with them on the second Saturday of every month since it is closer to where he lives near Hermitage Country Club. As the territorial governor to four of the five clubs he shoots at, Stephenson is involved across the clubs, he promotes the sport, he runs the timer, he writes matches, and people ask him for information and tips on what they can do to improve their matches. He’s had the honor of regulator bestowed upon him for going above and beyond the call of duty and putting in

more work than what is normally expected. One of the newer competitors, whom Stephenson has taken under his wing, and who has started to win against Stephenson sometimes, has commented on how impressed he was by how nice everyone is in cowboy action shooting – how they compete without being competitive, Stephenson recalled him saying. “I’m there to compete, I want to win – I don’t argue that point; I like winning. Everybody does. But we don’t get awards for participation,” Stephenson said. “Our award is just being with likeminded people that are out having fun like you want to have. “I look forward to seeing all my people every week,” he said, “and whether I win or lose, that’s secondary, and most other people I talk to, they’re all that way.”

Convention continued from >6 ties and why they met every four years to nominate a candidate. She even said my sister and I could stay up late to watch what I thought was going to must-see TV. I quickly fell asleep on the sofa on the first night of the convention, only remembering glimpses of white men in suits with funny hats. To be honest, I only remember bits and pieces of the ensuing two weeks. But even those clouded memories revealed the first signs of a house divided,

thankfully in political terms only. My mother was an Adlai Stevenson supporter while my father supported Dwight Eisenhower. Like most who served in World War II, he joined others who believed in the man that led the invasion at Normandy and freed the continent. I’ve never been sure if it was that devotion, or a true belief in the Republican Party platform that motivated him to support Ike. Later in life, my mother informed me long after my father’s death that he had, in fact, supported many can-

didates who identified as Democrats. Honestly, I had rarely heard them discuss politics and I have no recollection of these discussions ever becoming heated. Looking back, I suppose their political differences represented one of only a few of the things they didn’t share in common. I also admire their respect for civility when politics were the subject. As I watched the convention last week, the starkness of the contrast of now and then could not have been more blatantly evident. For starters, both parties would not recog-

nize the platforms put forth in the 1950s, and, more importantly, neither would claim allegiance to those outdated positions compared to where they stand today. I also was further convinced that the true defining principles of each party has become buried in hopeless deadlocks where policy decisions are often made to please those political or party concerns. As for this year’s virtual or hybrid versions of the traditional gatherings, I’ll be busy doing something else. Whatever happens it too will

be predictable, over-produced and weepy for my sense of nostalgia that somehow misses those days of flag-draped delegates roaming the convention floor slightly buzzed and talking much too loud to any reporter who would listen. Those crazy hats mixed with one too many frozen drinks produced an atmosphere that perhaps better reflected what politics used to be in America, or maybe it’s an image that’s as obsolete as those platforms that once defined each party, or maybe it’s the hope of the future.
