The Goochland Christmas Mother Association has announced that Joy Kline has been selected to serve as Christmas Mother for the 2020 campaign. A long-time Goochland resident, Kline is committed to serving her community. “I am delighted to represent Goochland as Christmas Mother this year,” Kline said last week. “Having been an active volunteer for some time, I have looked forward to wrapping the gifts and helping with the distribution to Kline families. The needs are even greater during this unprecedented time, and we will have to be creative in how we meet those needs, but I know that our great community will continue to be supportive. We want to make a lot of wishes come true during the upcoming holiday

As hundreds of local students learned this summer, it takes more than a pandemic to keep Goochland’s school librarians down. Concerned that the forced closure of schools in March would deprive local students of reading material, three Goochland elementary school librarians quickly came together to devise a plan: If students could no longer visit the school libraries, they asked, why not bring the library to them? precautions certainly didn’t appear to keep many local kids from taking part in the project. In that first month, the trio served over 300 students, each of whom received a complimentary Popsicle along with three books of their choice. “We know that the research clearly shows better literacy outcomes when students have access to printed reading materials,” said Parrish. “So this was our solution to getting books into the hands of

Move means more space for county registrar’s office and Electoral Board Contributed report

On Tuesday, Sept. 1, Goochland County officially opened the new Goochland County Office of the General Registrar at 1876 Sandy Hook Rd. behind the County Administration Building in the Courthouse Village. The newly remodeled building provides the Office of the General Registrar and the Goochland County Electoral Board larger dedicated space for election operations. As a result of the new office, voters will now have a one-stop location to conduct all aspects of voter registration and election in an organized and spacious facility. The new location will help to accommodate no-excuse absentee voting in person as well as by mail. Effective July 1, 2020 any registered voter can vote absentee without having to provide any reason or supporting information. “Goochland County is known for consistently having the highest voter turnout in the Commonwealth,” said Susan Lascolette, Chair of the Board of Supervisors. “The new Goochland County Office of the General Registrar

provides the Office of the General Registrar and voters secure space to conduct one of the most important rights of our democracy, voting, both now and into the future.” Goochland County has continuously been recognized as having the highest voter turnout in the Commonwealth, thanks in large part to active and engaged voters of the county. The new Office of the General Registrar provides dedicated and secure space for election preparation. “We are extremely grateful to the Board of Supervisors for providing a modern, functional and efficient space for The Frances Carter Ragland Office of the General Registrar,” said Electoral Board Secretary Robin Lind. “With this new facility the Board honors the citizen participation that has made Goochland voters renowned throughout the Commonwealth for the highest percentage turnout year after year. We are delighted to welcome voters to their new Elections office.” “The move to this new facility could not come at a better time and shows great

forethought by the Board of Supervisors and County Administration,” said Ryan Mulligan, Goochland General Registrar and Director of Elections. “As Goochland County continues to grow, more personnel and space is needed so that we can continue to provide the citizens with the level of service they deserve.” Ballots for the November 3, 2020 November General Election will be available Friday, Sept. 18, but can be requested now. The last day to request an Absentee Ballot is Friday, Oct. 23. In-Person Absentee Voting will be available at a Satellite Polling location in the Goochland Sports Complex building next door to the Office of the General Registrar during normal office hours on weekdays beginning Friday, Sept. 18 and continuing until Friday, Oct. 30. The office will also be open for Absentee Voting on Saturday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Oct. 31 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. For more information on elections and voter registration, visit https://www. goochlandva.us/359/Elections-andVoter-Registration, call (804) 556-5803, or email vote@goochlandva.us.

‘Stunning’ number of absentee ballots already requested By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Add the way you cast your ballot this Election Day to the list of things that will — or at least could — be different in 2020.

According to Goochland County Electoral Board Secretary Robin Lind, the number of eligible Goochland voters who have requested to vote absentee in the upcoming election around 11 percent. Calling it “a stunning

change” from previous years, Lind told supervisors during the board’s monthly meeting on Sept. 1 that the number is on track to reach 20 percent. Lind said Goochland’s absentee count thus far is similar to that of surrounding

counties, with the spike likely driven by fears of COVID-19. Also new this year is the fact that no reason is required to vote absentee, and photo identification is not required at the polling place. Some see Voting > 7

her husband during the 42 years he served Goochland County as deputy and sheriff. Ruby was involved for many years in service to her community, including 10 years on the Board of Trustees of the Pamunkey Regional Library. She delighted in sewing for people and in producing handmade crafts. She enjoyed her family and

spent many hours working on her genealogy and family history. The family received friends on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Bennett Funeral Home, where her services immediately followed. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Centerville Rescue Squad in lieu of flowers.

BOS approves company’s plan to move operations away from Rockville Rd. By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Residents living near a local quarry may soon notice a bit less noise in the neighborhood after the Goochland County Boardo Supervisors u approved request last month to relocate part of the operation from its current location to a property further to the north. Martin Marietta Materials, Inc. had received a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for the quarry in 1989, and was not seeking any changes to the original agreement. Instead, the request was

part of an ongoing update to the company’s Rockville facility. The company plans to relocate its existing processing plant and equipment onto newly acquired land that is farther away from residents on Rockville Road and to create vegetated berms and provide buffers from public roads. The new processing plant will employ new equipment to be quieter, more efficient, and more environmentally friendly. The CUP request had received a favorable 5-0 vote from the Planning Commission in July.

Want better grass? Raise your blades and avoid the shade By Cathy McCarthy Master Gardener

Lawn care can be an engaging hobby that brings some people a lot of joy. My goal is simpler. I want to do a decent job of maintaining the grass in my yard, but I am not seeking perfection. Therefore, when a friend recently gifted me a 250 page book about turf management, I was a little perplexed. Does taking care of your lawn have to be that complicated? Then I noticed the book’s author was sponsored by a grass chemical company. Fortunately, there is quite a bit of peer reviewed research available on growing grass and caring for lawns. Using reliable sources like university and Cooperative Extension Service research studies, it doesn’t take long to see that having a healthy grass lawn may come down to doing less, not more. Since my goal is a decent lawn rather than an award winning lawn, research points toward focusing on five basic guidelines. Don’t plant a grass seed that isn’t meant to thrive in Central Virginia. The Maryland - Virginia Turfgrass Variety Recommendation Work Group is made up of turf and seed specialists from the University of Maryland, the USDA, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and Virginia Tech. These people are serious about grass. After conducting many evaluation trials they recommend pure Kentucky bluegrass only for areas in and west of the Blue Ridge Mountains and in Northern Virginia. In Central Virginia, given our local temperatures, moisture levels, and soil pH they recommend a fine-bladed tall fescue or a 90

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

No worries? For one day, it sure would be nice By Roslyn Ryan Editor

“India and China are squaring off in the Himalayas again,” blared the headline on a well-known national news website the other day. “How worried should we be?” Reader, I am going to answer that question now as honestly as I would answer it if Jesus himself were sitting across from me, hands folded, patiently awaiting my response. And the answer is this: At this present moment I am not very much at all worried about India, or China, or what they are doing in the Himalayas. “Well, wait just one minute,” you may be saying. “That is quite a

limited worldview you have there, and more than a bit short-sighted. Don’t you realize that as members of a global society we are all intricately connected and the threat of a geopolitical squabble in any part of the world will invariably usher forth both immediate and long-term consequences for even those living an ocean away?” Yes. Yes, I do realize that. But with all due respect to the copy writer who penned that headline, many of us at this point have very limited worry capacity left. As a quick scroll through any social media feed will attest, you don’t have to look far lately to find people who are struggling to find jobs, or worried that the jobs they

have are in jeopardy. They are deeply concerned about their children’s education and keeping their at-risk loved ones safe. They are worried about running out of money, or bandwidth, or patience. Add these new stressors to the list of things that many of us juggle all the time already – the broken water heaters and the tight deadlines and the regular old ups and downs of life – and you can see why it’s sort of tempting to just let Beijing and New Delhi hash it out on their own. I mean really, do they honestly need my input? Are they on the phone right now? . Yes, I do understand the idea that if a butterfly flaps its wings in the Amazon it can cause a tornado in

Texas (or something like that). But that’s an awful lot of butterflies to catch and right now I’m just trying to figure out what I’m making for dinner tonight and remember if I paid that one bill I always forget. So maybe, just for this one day, we can all give ourselves permission to worry about our own most immediate and pressing – even petty – personal issues and not what’s happening across the globe. In this case it’s a ridiculously complicated, long-simmering, protracted border dispute between two nuclear powers – so it’s not not a big deal. I get it. It is. I’m just promising to worry all about it tomorrow.

For most of us, search for ‘normal’ continues By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

Did it feel like Labor Day at your house? While most are celebrating the end of summer, I’m left wondering what happened to not only summer, but the preceding season as well. Who could have imagined when the lions of an epidemic first blew in last March that when that first nip of cold air appeared, we’d still be talking about our desire to return to some form of normalcy.

That’s not to say we haven’t made progress or things haven’t improved from those dark months of despair when thousands of Americans lost their lives to a ferocious virus. It all seems like a blur now — the searches for toilet paper and hand sanitizer, empty shelves at the supermarket, and an economy dialed back to a standstill. But, as summer ends, and America returns to back to school and work mode, it still doesn’t feel exactly right and the thick air of uncertainty is more than subtle.

I spoke to a friend who had a different take on the last few months. She told stories of family outings, trips to the lake and camping excursions that allowed her family to recapture something that had been lost in the fervor of the normalcy we enjoyed before COVID-19. I suppose the same thing happened here in a fashion. Family movie nights and other homebound activities often filled our nights, and we’ve played more than a game or two of Spades. see Normal > 13

This year’s garden review: Some hits and a few misses By Virginia McCown Contributing Columnist

The results are in! It’s The Good, the Bad and the Ugly for my 2020 vegetable garden. First up, the good...

Egg Plant: I nearly gave up growing eggplant in Central Virginia. I have better results growing the long cylindrical Japanese varieties. Flea beetles plague my garden every spring. This year I grew Burpee Green Knight, a Japanese variety with— yes, green skin. I froze, pickled and even dehydrated eggplant—I had THAT many. I will grow Green Knight again. Cucumbers: The cucumbers were the best I’ve had in years. I prepared tzatziki, all sorts of pickles, and still had enough to give away fresh every week. I will recommend Burpee Hybrid 11.

Cantaloupe: I grew the heirloom Hale’s Best as well as Hybrid Melon Goddess from Seeds & Such. Both varieties were late to succumb to blight. Perhaps they weren’t as sweet as I had hoped, but I had enough to dehydrate as well as to preserve in vodka. Both methods make interesting and fun holiday gifts.

Watermelon: Year after year I grow the heirloom Moon and Stars variety. I save the seeds. They’ve never let me down. Moon and Stars has a strong natural disease resistance, and deer seem to ignore the speckled foliage as well as the dark green blotchy melons. Okra: I’ve grown burgundy see Garden > page 7

The Soil Test The third rail in gardening is the soil test. If you’re planning a new garden or if your vegetable plants didn’t yield the anticipated bounty, not getting a soil test could be the problem. Most fruits and vegetables grow best in neutral soil with a pH of about 6.2 to 7.2. However, blueberry bushes, for example, prefer an acidic or a low pH level. Performing a soil test now will give you the entire winter to slowly amend the soil pH and chemistry in time for the next growing season. Lowcost soil tests are available at Cooperative Extension offices. The soil test not only provides information on the soil, pH, and available levels of phosphorous, but on potassium and other essential elements or nutrients. The Virginia Tech soil test report also offers instructions on how to adjust or modify problems in the soil. Test results can be received either by mail or email. The future of farming? Two county groups going ‘vertical’ Contributed report

In an unprecedented partnership, non-profit GoochlandCares and Goochland Tech have teamed up to add vertical farming to their community mission and curriculum, respectively. A generous GoochlandCares benefactor donated two vertical farms designed and made by Charlottesville-based Babylon Micro-Farms to GoochlandCares. The farms were installed in early August at Goochland Tech for use by the Culinary Arts Program students, who will learn both

vertical farming skills and how to use the fresh produce and herbs and spices in their class projects. The end result is a community driven effort to support the food pantry at GoochlandCares, which provides food to neighbors in need. The pantry will receive both nutritious, locally grown fresh produce year-round and dishes prepared by the students with the harvests from the farms. “This innovative farming system by Babylon MicroFarms to produce fresh heathy produce with an incredibly tiny

footprint offers huge opportunities for our community,” said Sally Graham, Executive Director of GoochlandCares. “This is a win-win-win as our clients get fresh produce and our next generation of Goochland culinary leaders have the opportunity to explore sustainable micro-food systems. The recent COVID19 pandemic has shown us the weak links in our country’s food distribution system, affecting everyone especially those who are most vulnerable. We hope that this partnership will be a model for many other food pantries to have a reliable in-house resource to provide fresh food.” Goochland Tech, part of Goochland High School, is a leader in teaching students

marketable jobs skills in programs like the Culinary Arts Program, where students with a passion for food can pursue learning a broad array of skills to prepare them to enter the hospitality industry. “The Babylon Micro-Farms hydroponic system is a tool that embraces many of the core aspects of the culinary world and the CTE curriculum,” said David Booth, Culinary Arts Instructor. “It will provide us with a hands-on, real world platform from which to explore sustainability, nutrition, product research and development, marketing, team building and cross-collaboration, while also highlighting the Goochland County Public Schools’ value of the importance of community. Our continued partner-

ship with GoochlandCares serves as an example of what can be accomplished when creativity, optimism, and a pursuit of excellence come together to bring good to those in need. It is an honor to be part of this collaboration.” Considered to be the wave of our urban agricultural future, vertical farming is a multi-billion dollar industry in the US and growing daily as transparency in our food chain and the emphasis on sourcing food locally becomes more important to increasing numbers of people. Babylon MicroFarms has developed patented technology for a cloud-based platform that operates their vertical farms through a mobile phone app that controls all aspects of farming at the touch

of a button. According to Babylon CEO Alexander Olesen, the company traces its origin back to the University of Virginia’s ILab, where in 2017 Olesen and cofounder Graham Smith first assembled a rudimentary table top prototype intended for use in refugee camps. “This project has been a return to one of our most important priorities – to provide fresh food to people that otherwise might not have access to it,” said Olesen. “We value our partnership with Goochland Cares and Goochland Tech and hope it is a pilot program that other school systems will adopt. We are truly excited about being part of training the next generation of farmers and chefs.”

COVID has cancelled many activities, but it has not cancelled cancer. And yet, sadly, the COVID pandemic has led to many fundraising events for the American Cancer Society (ACS) being restructured or even cancelled. The ACS provides much-needed support, supplies, and information for cancer survivors and caregivers, but the organization needs help to continue those services. Simply put, say organizers, the group’s mission is at risk and in danger of losing a gen-

eration of progress in research and treatments. Projected revenue for the year has declined by a third, representing more than $200 million. In light of this, the ACS is calling on its dedicated Relay For Life family to join them in recovering some of the fundraising revenue lost to the pandemic and some of the hope for brighter times. How can you help? By visiting www.RelayForLife.org/ GoochlandVA and purchasing a luminaria in honor or memory of your loved one.

Each year, the American Cancer Society invests $100 million in new research. Because of the budget shortfall, however, cancer research funding could be cut by 50 percent this year. Fortunately, while the pandemic may have forced a change in some plans, there will still be an opportunity to come together in a drive-thru fashion. On Friday, Sept. 18, 2020, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., members of the Relay family and the communities of Goochland and Louisa are

invited to participate in a drivethru luminaria ceremony in the parking lot of Tucker Park at Maidens Crossings (1300 Maidens Road, Maidens, VA 23102) along the James River. Additionally, all attendees are urged to donate canned goods to benefit the Goochland Cares Food Pantry. These will be collected at the first turn in the parking lot of the event. Luminarias purchased online by Sept. 15 will be displayed at the drive-thru luminaria ceremony.

Previewing Cup playoff drivers at Richmond five’s in the last six races. It was at a Virginia short track – Martinsville – where Logano punched his ticket to the championship race two years ago.

By Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor

ASCAR will run four races across its three top national touring series at Richmond Raceway from Thursday to Saturday. The 0.75-mile short track will open its three days of racing with the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series’ regular season finale on Thursday at 8 p.m. on FS1. The Trucks race will be followed by consecutive NASCAR Xfinity Series races, with the Go Bowling 250 running on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and the Racing Lovers 250 to be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Both races will air on NBCSN. The nightcap on Saturday will be the NASCAR Cup Series’ Federated Auto Parts 400, the second race in the first round of the playoffs, at 7:30 p.m. The Cup Series race will also air on NBCSN. This will be the first and only Richmond Cup race in 2020 after the spring race was cut and replaced on the schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fans will also not be able to attend because of the pandemic. NASCAR’s 16 drivers in the Cup playoffs are Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski, Chase Elliott, Joey Logano, Martin Truex Jr., Ryan Blaney, Alex Bowman, William Byron, Austin Dillon, Cole Custer, Aric Almirola, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Clint Bowyer and Matt DiBenedetto. Seven-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, who is retiring from fulltime racing at the end of 2020, missed making the top 16 by six points. Here’s a look at the Cup drivers who are contending

for the series championship. Due to early press time, results from the playoffopening Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway were not included.

1. Kevin Harvick (7 wins) It’s just the second season in which the 20-year Cup veteran has reached seven wins, but the first time he did so – when he won eight races – happened only two years ago. The 44-year-old Harvick continues to defy Father Time, getting better and better with age. Since partnering with crew chief Rodney Childers and joining Stewart-Haas Racing, the 2014 series champion has more than doubled his wins total, putting him in a tie for ninth place with Kyle Busch on

the Cup Series’ all-time wins list after Dover with 56. Richmond is among 10 tracks where he has three or more wins, although his third win there came back in 2013 when he was still driving for Richard Childress Racing (RCR).

2. Denny Hamlin (6 wins) This is the fastest that the Chesterfield native has ever reached six wins in a season. It’s also just the third time Hamlin has achieved that many victories in his 15 fulltime years racing in Cup. He’s on track for his best year since 2010, when he won a career-best eight events and led the standings going into the final race, but ultimately finished second in points to

The Chevrolets once again appear to be a step behind both Ford and Toyota – although it should be noted that Hamlin won six of seven in the regular season for Toyota – and despite only two regularseason victories, Elliott was, for the third straight year, the manufacturer’s wins leader going into the playoffs. Since starting his fulltime Cup career in 2016, Elliott has averaged a finish of 8.17 in the first round of the playoffs, placing lower than 13th only once (a 36th-place result at Las Vegas in 2018). He has two top five’s, including a runner-up result two years ago, and three top ten’s at Richmond.

6. Martin Truex Jr. (1 win) Harvick and Hamlin have been so dominant that anyone who hadn’t paid attention to Truex’s hot streak can be forgiven. The 2017 Cup champion, and the only other driver to win a regular-season race in a Toyota this year (Hamlin, his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, won the other six), reeled off eight straight top-four finishes going into the playoffs. It’s his least winning season since 2015, but Truex’s consistency should undoubtedly keep him in the championship conversation. Since notching his first victory at a track shorter than a mile in length – at Richmond

14. Kyle Busch For the defending series Cup champion, the great thing about Richmond is that he can chuck all of that bad juju he’s accumulated this season out the window. He leads all active drivers at Richmond with an average finish of 6.79, and it’s his second best track both in average result (behind 6.30 at Kentucky) and total victories (six, behind eight at Bristol).
