In an effort to prepare for what promises to be a record number of residents voting absentee in the upcoming Nov. 3, 2020 election, Goochland County has approved the creation of a voter satellite office to be located at the county Parks and Recreation Building. Goochland County Registrar Ryan Mulligan made the request for the additional location during the Board of Supervisors Sept. 1 meeting, explaining that the move would help make the process of registering to vote absentee more efficient for residents by separating that activity from other election-related business taking place at the Registrar’s new office next door. The facility is already owned by the county and no extra equipment will be required, see Voting > page 5

When she set out to publish her first book of poems, Goochland resident Lisa Tyler had only one specific goal in mind. More than anything, she says, she simply wanted to put something positive out into the world. With the pandemic tightening its grip on the U.S., “I saw everything people were going through,” remembers Tyler. “In the midst of adversity people look for hope, and that’s what my poems are all about.” Her new book, “Lily Tyler Amongst Thorns,” was a labor of love, and saw her returning to a craft she has enjoyed since childhood. She says she began putting the poems down on paper in March, sometimes jotting just a word or two and occasionally setting the work aside for a few days until she was ready to return to it. The Goochland County Animal Shelter currently has this sweet old gentleman is a 10+ year old Shepherd Mix, available for adoption. He first came to the shelter with a severe chronic skin infection and flea infestation that had resulted in almost total hair loss. He has dry eye and will need eye medication long term as well as several more months of skin medication. He is such a sweet boy and is in need of a nice retirement home. Flying colors: A few tips for displaying Old Glory By Roslyn Ryan Editor

If you happened to be looking for a bit of a lift a few weeks ago, it would have done your heart some good to visit the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page. On Sept. 4, the department shared the news that they had partnered with Goochland High School Career and Technical Education and JROTC students to build flag disposal boxes for use at several sites, including the Sheriff’s Department offices and the local American Legion Post Hall on Route 6. It is a wonderful project, and, judging by the comments beneath the post, one that many in the community appreciate. While most of us consider the

American flag to be something worthy of reverence and respect, attempts to celebrate and honor it can sometimes stray outside the bounds of what is proscribed in the official U.S Flag Code. Concerned about the dos and don’ts when it comes to proper flag etiquette? Most of the information is easily accessible on the internet, but we are happy to offer a few helpful tips here to get you started. Do hoist the flag briskly and lower it ceremoniously. Don’t allow the flag to touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise. Do make sure that when the flag is hung vertically on a wall, window, or door, the Union (blue section) should be to the observer’s left. When the flag is hung either horizontally or verti-

cally against a wall, the Union should be to the observer’s left. Don’t use or store the flag in a way that might lead it to be torn, soiled, or damaged in any way. Do display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on flagstaffs in the open (it may, however, be displayed at night — if illuminated — to produce a patriotic effect). If you ask me about the times in my life when I distinctly remember thinking long and hard about our cherished flag, several almost instantly spring to mind. The earliest is from summer camp as a young child, when each morning a select few campers would be selected to carefully unfold, secure and raise the flag each day — and woe be unto the camper who somehow let Old Glory touch the ground (thank-

fully I never saw it happen). It was an early lesson in the power of symbols, respect for tradition, and the importance of doing things “the right way.” Another, or course, is the period right after Sept. 11, when American flags were suddenly everywhere and store owners had to scramble to keep them in stock. It was a symbol of our unity in those hazy, awful days, as we as a nation struggled to comprehend what we had lost. The point here is that — regardless of how you feel about our flag, whether you choose to treat it with reverence or not — the people involved in the flag disposal box project have done a tremendous service for those of us who will always hold this symbol of our nation sacred. We sincerely thank them for it, and consider it a wonderful addition to the community.

Christmas Mother volunteers gearing up for busy season Christmas Mother Association volunteer board members prepare postcards for prospective applicants for assistance for 2020. Mary Ellen Kiedrow, Meta Potts and Cindie Valentine were hard at work recently readying postcards to past recipients of Christmas Mother support to let them know of new procedures for applying. Among the changes this year, Christmas Mother volunteers will take all applications by telephone, and supporting documentation needed will be scheduled as a drive up review. The association anticipates the need to be greater than ever due to the pandemic and has implemented new contactless means to reach those who would like to apply. Perseverance paid dividends in legendary treasure hunt By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

There are thousands of stories about amazing people pursuing goals in their lives that seemed unobtainable and, to some, obsessive. Tenacity, hard work and perseverance didn’t always guarantee fairy tale endings to lives spent on a singular mission. They were often remembered for their efforts, while the results of their quest often fell well short of the mark. But, for Mel Fisher, a transplanted chicken farmer from California who relocated his family to Key West, Florida, to search for treasure in the treacherous waters surrounding the narrow strip of islands, the end justified the means -- but not without great personal sacrifice. Fisher discovered documents of a long-forgotten shipwrecked Spanish galleon lost off Key West in a series of hurricanes in 1622. After researching the disaster, Fisher discovered a manifest listing millions of dollars in gold, silver and jewels that had been loaded on the ship headed home from the New World. Fisher and his sons began the search for the Neustra Senora de Atocha in the late 1970s, a mission that quickly became a family affair featuring Fisher’s sons and wife Delores. Even when divers routinely returned to the surface with empty nets and daily expenses mounted, Fisher would famously exclaim, “Today is the day.” The debts mounted and the leaky houseboat the Fishers called home almost sank, but the Fishers suffered the most severe loss when a son and daughter-in-law died see Treasure > page 12

Teams from Goochland’s Darlings and Ponytails divisions were slated to host Powhatan this Wednesday at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, at Hidden Rock Park in Goochland. The combined Belles and Debs team will also play on the road at Powhatan on Turner Field today (Thursday) at 6:30 p.m., and the Ponytails will host Powhatan next Wednesday at 7 p.m. More game listings can be seen on GYAA Softball’s Facebook page. Goochland’s combined Belles and Debs team, the Bulldogs, hosts Powhatan in a home game at Napa Field last Tuesday. Powhatan was the winning team.

Allgaier sweeps Xfinity doubleheader By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
